With stand-up paddleboarding becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the last few years, and especially over the recent lockdowns, a Cornwall based family have made a few deft moves in creating and opening a new retail operation based on the outskirts of Wadebridge. Previously having run and owned a local residential outdoor centre, providing activity holidays and courses for schools and adults, which was adversely affected by the pandemic, the family took the decision to make some radical changes to their lives by closing the centre and setting up this new venture in late 2020. hen 63-year-old Amazon delivery driver Chris Barendt collapsed at the wheel during his route on 30th March 2021, the outcome didn’t look good. The sudden halt prompted drivers in nearby vehicles – including RNLI lifeguards Tom McRitchie and raham isher to p ll o er to help Smashing the window, they pulled Chris on to the road to commence CPR along with passer-by Colin Grant, while they awaited the emergency services. er one sa s it s a miracle hose on scene that day all thought I was dead – I technically was for 27 minutes,” says hris t is testament to the actions of the lifeguards, the passers-by, the ambulance crew and the air ambulance that I am here today. What can I say – thanks just isn’t enough!” Chris was shocked seven times with a deﬁ rillator responders from the o th estern m lance er ice o ndation Trust before he regained a pulse. Landing in a near ﬁeld in st min tes the Cornwall Air Ambulance paramedics sedated Chris and put him on a ventilator to transfer him to Royal Cornwall Hospital. Thomas Hennessy Jones, Critical Care Paramedic for Cornwall Air Ambulance, e plains e er than in people s r i e an o t of hospital cardiac arrest or hris to not only survive, but to be back to full health

The actions that happened in the first fi e min tes and beyond made all the difference, it gave someone like me a chance.”

Now into its second year, founder of Inspire Makers, Vicki Glaister, reminisces on her decision to start this business: “During 25 years in high street retail I witnessed ﬁrst hand the race to the ottom on price the rise of the throwaway culture, and the decimation of the high street as we know it. I believe the way back for retail is to focus on local communities, local businesses, and well-made long-lasting goods – mindful and sustainable shopping, if you will. “I opened my doors in June 2020 in the midst of the Covid pandemic and have been heartened by the change in people's attitude to spending. It is wonderful to see the connection customers make with locally made, handcrafted products, either through appreciating the workmanship, the story of the artist, or as a memento of Cornwall.” Alongside a wide collection of high-quality, locally produced jewellery, ceramics, textiles, art, stationery and homewares, Inspire Makers is also home to an exciting workshop programme, inviting all budding artists and makers to begin their own creative journey.

With workshops available to book from now until the end of the year, and plans for 2022 already underway, you can choose between a variety of half-day taster or full day sessions, and as most of the classes require no previous experience you can feel conﬁdent in tr in a ne ho nder the guiding hand of an expert. “Autumn is a great time to learn a new skill as you can get yourself set up for the colder winter months with an enjoyable indoor activity or perhaps, dare we say, start making your own Christmas gifts,” says Vicki. “With everything from bookbinding and printing to glass fusing and jewellery making, there is bound to be something to spark your interest.”

According to Ocean Conservancy, eight million metric tons of plastic makes its way into our oceans every year, with plastic production and consumption predicted to double over the next 10 years. As a PADI Divemaster living in Cornwall, this is a subject very close to the heart of Andy Forster, Project Director of i e ro ect orn all a not for proﬁt Community Interest Company dedicated to tackling plastic pollution in our oceans by introducing teenagers across the UK to diving and so empowering them to become the ocean in encers of the f t re “Dive Project Cornwall has two parts,” explains Andy. “The education programme is designed to reach thousands of children across the UK via a suite of educational tools, videos and other resources available to schools through the Marine Conservation Society. We are also communicating with millions of adults through our audience providers in order to raise awareness. In collaboration with these media partners, collaborating charities and sponsors, which include leading national dive brands such as Suunto, Beuchat and Cornwall-based fourth element, we are able to share our message across social media and various other communication channels. Our current reach is just shy of 10 million adults already.”

The second part of Dive Project Cornwall is an amazing experience programme, available to all secondary schools across the UK. Through a nation-wide competition, schools can compete for the opportunity to bring 20 of their students from each of the 20 regions across the UK, on a week’s residential course at Porthkerris. That's a total of 400 lucky teens set to visit Cornwall’s premier dive centre, where they will be trained e perienced alified nstr ctors and lea e as certified as Open Water Scuba Divers. “Not only will the children leave as alified pen ater c a i ers the ill also learn first hand from leadin marine industry experts, the important part our oceans play in the survival of our planet and how this impacts our very own existence,” adds Andy. “The aim is that these children will leave as ambassadors for the project, sharing their experience and knowledge with friends and families, so activating a network of campaigners whose mission is aligned with our own; to save the ocean.”

fter a complete restructure in May, the new SPAR store at Carnon Downs – part of Appleby Westward, the regional distribution company for the national chain here in the south est has recorded si nificant increases in sales and c stomer n m ers in its first three months of trading. The £400,000 scheme, which incorporated the new SPAR UK store design standard, saw the creation of a state-of-the-art, ne t eneration a ship for pple Westward’s stable of 111 company-owned stores throughout the region. The updates themselves are, of course, part of the reason for the ptic in tra c and sales t in order to fully analyse the recent success, it’s important to note that the store has a strong focus on provenance, with wide-ranging local Cornish products available across many categories. Add to this an up-front butchery counter (branded with the Cornish ‘Goon Karnen Kigti’) and there is a clear emphasis throughout the store on fresh, Cornish goods. Butchery, fresh fruit and vegetables and other chilled produce are all at the front of the store as customers walk in, while a d cor of dar re fi t res and ood effect tiles feature strongly among the warm colo rs materials and finishes across the store. That’s not all, either, with other

This Christmas, the team at Cornwall Hospice Care invite you to join them to remember loved ones in a collective act of remembrance during which you can look back fondly on the memories made at Christmas’s past. “This year I’m pleased to say we can be together once again after the pandemic put a stop to the 2020 event.
