Welcome
From the Editor
There’s something quite wonderful about welcoming in a new year. It’s an opportunity for moments of pause, reflection and intentional renewal. With the craziness of Christmas and its associated excesses behind us, now is the time to set some goals for the year ahead. This issue, I’ve been exploring the transformative power of hot and cold therapy, a practice that feels beautifully aligned with our Cornish way of life, where the raw elements are always just a moment away.
Our coastline has long been a natural wellness sanctuary, with its bracing sea temperatures and dramatic beaches offering the perfect backdrop for reset and rejuvenation. Cold water immersion isn’t just a trend – it’s a practice deeply rooted in our connection to the natural world. Those brave souls who venture into the Atlantic’s winter waters aren’t just seeking a physical challenge; they’re engaging in a profound conversation with themselves and their environment. Pairing cold water therapy with saunas and traditional heat treatments creates a holistic approach to wellness that speaks to both body and mind. It’s about shocking the system, then nurturing it – a metaphor, perhaps, for how we might approach our goals this year. Turn to page 19 to discover more.
As we take a moment to pause after the festive season, now is the perfect time to plan your next Cornish escape. While the weather outside might be wintry, the promise of warm sand under blue skies is certain to act as a pick-me-up. Join us from page 29, where you’ll find a host of luxury accommodation to choose from. This issue, we’re also delighted to bring you our Cornwall Living Foodie supplement from page 39. Here we showcase a selection of Cornwall’s restaurants where you can be assured of a warm welcome and a delicious dining experience.
Don’t forget to enter our competitions on page 59 where there’s the chance to win a delicious Cornish hamper packed full of goodies courtesy of Cornish Escapes and a treatment from MEDfacials worth £600.
...happy reading!

Jade runs the London Marathon for Cornwall Hospice Care
One of the Cornwall Hospice Care team of 27 taking part in next year’s London Marathon is Jade Hugo from Luxulyan. She’s chosen to take on the challenge in memory of her dad and is starting from scratch, having not run this distance before. She and her fellow runners from Cornwall will be hoping to beat the massive £87,954 raised for the healthcare charity by those who took part in this year’s London Marathon (2024).
“Dad was at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in 2018,” Jade explains. “I always knew I wanted to fundraise, but then I had children, and there was the pandemic. Now, I’m working for the charity, and it seems like the right time. Initially, I thought I’d do our half marathon – Run Falmouth – but the opportunity for the London Marathon came up for me, and I went for it. I’m loving my running, so why not?” It’s Jade’s personal experience of the
end-of-life care the charity offers, that has driven her on. “Dad fought his cancer bravely and with a lot of compassionate care at the hospice, so I can absolutely do this. He would have been there cheering me on without a shadow of a doubt.”
Jane Appleton, Cornwall Hospice Care’s Events and Community Manager, says Jade and her fellow runners are extraordinary people; “It’s a big deal to take on one of the world’s most iconic marathons and I applaud every one of those who’ve taken a huge step and signed up to support our Cornish charity.”

Looking to a spirited future
From honey or spiced rum to Cornish gin, Mounts Bay Distillery, run by husbandand-wife team Ben and Lisa, has got it bottled up. In their own words, “Our passion for Cornwall and the sea has influenced our distillery massively. We try not to use plastics in product packaging, and we donate shares of our profits to plastic-free seas charities.”
They’re also pleased to flag up the addition, back in August, of two woodfired stills, with respective capacities of
350 and 800 litres. Not only will this lead to better-flavoured rum thanks to the complete caramelisation of the sugars in the rum beer when distilling, but it also means they’re able to source fuel locally rather than relying upon electricity and gas, the price of which is volatile and expensive. It will also help them to lessen their carbon footprint. For more information, call 07484 779635 or visit www.mountsbaydistillery.com

It’s been a whirlwind autumn for many holiday homeowners, with a significant number of managed properties booked solidly throughout September and October. Smaller homes, in particular, have seen week or two-week stays fill their calendars, leaving just a brief pause before the festive season kicks in. Larger homes, sleeping eight or more, have achieved around 50% occupancy – a figure that aligns with typical trends, especially given their higher maintenance needs after the summer surge.
If your bookings have been quieter, it might be time to ask why? Pricing plays a pivotal role. Regularly compare your rates with competitors to ensure you’re competitive during quieter months. Offering last-minute discounts – ideally capped at 20% – can also help, but significant reductions may indicate a need to reassess your pricing strategy.
Marketing is equally crucial. Is your agent showcasing your property effectively? Now is the perfect time to review your
2024 performance, plan for 2025, and even consider switching agents if needed. Feedback from guests is another key factor – repeated comments about certain issues should prompt swift action.
Finally, consider how to make your property more appealing. Could it cater to dog owners, adapt its sleeping arrangements, or offer weekend breaks? Perhaps a large property could be reconfigured to sleep fewer guests. These small tweaks could have a big impact.

WellnessODYSSEY A CORNISH
As we welcome in a new year, join us as we explore the benefits of elemental exposure.
Words by HANNAH TAPPING
é & BELOW ê
There’s something profoundly healing about immersing yourself in water, be it steaming hot or bracingly cold. Wellness retreats across Cornwall are embracing this elemental approach, offering experiences that go far beyond the typical New Year’s resolution. Immersion in the elements is a journey of renewal, where ancient healing practices come into play, all against the backdrop of Cornwall’s breathtaking landscape.
ç
The human body is remarkably responsive to temperature. What might seem like a simple plunge into hot or cold water is actually a complex physiological dance that can boost immunity, reduce inflammation and improve mental wellbeing. Modern science is catching up with what traditional cultures have known for millennia: water is medicine. Hydrotherapy – the use of water at different temperatures to heal – isn’t just a spa trend. It’s an approach to wellness that triggers the body’s natural healing mechanisms. When you move between hot and cold environments, you’re essentially creating a powerful internal workout for your circulatory and immune systems.
Beyond the physical benefits, practising hot and cold therapy can have profound benefits to our mental health. Emerging research reveals that temperature-based interventions can be powerful tools for managing psychological well-being. The neurological impact can be remarkable. When the body experiences extreme temperatures – whether that be the enveloping warmth of a sauna or the shocking chill of a cold plunge – it triggers a cascade of neurochemical responses that directly influence mental state. This controlled form of stress can act as a neural reset button. For example, in a sauna’s intense heat, the release of neurochemicals can create a state of being similar to a runner’s high, but achieved through heat exposure. Studies have shown that regular sauna use can benefit everything from our skin and joints to our mood and immune system.
Cold water therapy can be equally as beneficial. Reported benefits include reducing muscle pain and stiffness after exercise, by reducing swelling and inflammation, improving risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels, boosting the immune system, and improving general wellbeing. The Wim Hof method – a combination of cold water immersion and breathing techniques – has seen a growing following and promises to help with sleep, increased energy and decreased stress levels.

If you’re brave enough to take a dip in the sea, then a sauna is the perfect way to warm up. Mor Holan (www.morholan.co.uk) is situated behind the Grade II-listed Lime Kiln on the west side of Porthleven harbour. Sheltered from the prevailing south westerlies it’s the perfect place to take up the health benefits of hot and cold therapy. Boasting a woodfired and externally fed sauna that’s suitable for six adults, a cold drench bucket, cold dip tanks, warm shower and comfortable seating area Mor Holan will envelop you, bringing about feelings of safety and security, away from the distractions of the frenetic world we all seem to inhabit.
Over on the north Cornish coast, at Saunas By The Sea (www.saunasbythesea.co.uk) you’ll find a wild spa and wellness garden. Classes include yoga, pilates and sound bath, gongs and singing bowls or relax, recharge
and refresh in one of two secret spa areas, each featuring a wood-fired sauna and a cold plunge. Sauna experiences can be booked out for communal sessions or privately, with locations at Haryln Bay, Baby Bay and Polzeath.
While Cornwall’s coastline offers opportunity for cold-water immersion in the sea followed by a clifftop sauna, such a wild experience is not for everyone. Fortunately, there are many wonderful places where you can enjoy the benefits of elemental exposure in the comfort and luxury of a Cornish spa.
On Cornwall’s rugged north coast the St Moritz Hotel’s (www.stmoritzhotel.co.uk) brand-new spa offers a wellness experience where you can choose from the warmth of a high-heat or Nordic sauna or a detoxifying crystal steam room. Once the wonderful warmth has permeated your skin, refresh with an invigorating experience shower or cool off under the drench bucket and ice fountain!
Here you’ll also find a relaxing pool area and a swim-out hot tub. To complement its wellness space, the St Moritz Hotel is home to the Cowshed Spa – the only one of its kind to be found outside of the renowned Soho House collection – where you can indulge in massage, face and body treatments.
If you’re in search of some coastal healing on the south coast then St Michaels Resort (www. stmichaelsresort.com) in Falmouth has it on offer in spades. The wellness approach here integrates the natural environment seamlessly with the indoor spa area. It is home to the largest hydrotherapy pool,

St Michaels offers a range of Elemis treatments as well as Made For Life products – 100% organic preparations hand made in Cornwall suitable for everyone, but particularly for those going through cancer. St Michaels also offers a programme of wellness breaks that run throughout the year including yoga, Wim Hof and wild swimming.
As we head inland on our wellness journey, we find a city-chic spa at The Penventon Hotel’s leisure club and spa (www.penventon.co.uk)
This is a rejuvenating escape for day guests and residents alike, providing relaxing spa treatments, packages and breaks. Its bubbling jacuzzi, heated swimming pool and detoxifying sauna all invite you to indulge in some ‘me’ time. Experience the gentle art of relaxation here where nothing is too much trouble and your time is your own.
What makes these Cornish wellness experiences truly special is their connection to place. The clifftops, the wild Atlantic, the ancient stones – they’re all part of the healing process. You’re not just treating your body; you’re connecting with a landscape that has its own profound energy. As we step into the new year, these wellness experiences offer more than temporary relaxation. They’re about fundamental transformation, where the journey from hot to cold, from tension to relaxation, mirrors our own potential for renewal.

MEMORY LANE
Whilst walking along Newquay’s Great Western Beach, Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce, discuss all things Recycling, company culture and Oltco.
Founded in 2004, Oltco is now the UK’s leading sustainable resin flooring company. They also created the world-first and multi-award-winning product Recycle Bound. Having both grown up in Cornwall, Tom and Johnny both saw the impact of waste plastic on the environment and, as a consequence, spent years perfecting a product that incorporates recycled waste plastic into their already existing product, Resin Bound. It looks identical to its forerunner and costs the same whilst being beneficial to the planet.
Why do you love Cornwall?
The directors’ love of Cornwall is very apparent. Despite it potentially making more sense logistically to be located elsewhere, their love for the area and putting company culture first won the day. “Cornwall is an area that has touched everyone in the UK’s hearts, and everyone can relate to Cornwall… and pasties!” remarks Tom.
Resin and Recycle Bound
Resin and Recycle Bound provide a variety of both aesthetic and practical benefits to the home, and with a guarantee of 15-20 years, Oltco is able to provide years of trouble-free service. The resultant surface
is low maintenance, minimises weeds, is extremely strong and is permeable and SUDS compliant – meaning surface water can drain through, as it would naturally in soil, reducing the chances of puddling and flooding. Oltco has fully customisable in-house blends to match any home perfectly – modern or traditional in style.
What makes Oltco different?
“Our ethos is to feel good about the work that we do and the decisions that we make. This ethos is at the heart of everything Oltco does,” says Johnny.
Tom and Johnny both proudly discussed how it wasn’t just about the skillset but the type of people they are and how the removal of ‘Monday morning dread’ is a goal of Oltco. For more information or to get your Oltco journey started, get in touch with their head office in Newquay. They can install throughout winter as long as it is a dry day and over 5 degrees!

FROM HOME Home away
Open the doors to your piece of paradise in Cornwall.
The Cornish way of life is relaxed, free-spirited and adventurous, but perhaps you’re lucky enough to know this already. Whether you already own a holiday home in Cornwall or you’re simply looking to secure a slice of haven by the coast, Cornish Escapes is on hand to help guide you through the process of letting your holiday home. With more than 20 years of experience, the friendly team understands they are there to take the strain away of opening your home to guests while ensuring the maximum return on your financial investment.
2024 has been all about short breaks and last-minute bookings. To maximise on this demand, Cornish Escapes has optimised their properties further on third party sites such as booking.com, to broaden their portfolio's visibility. They have also invested more into their marketing strategy to ensure that they can maintain their high occupancy levels throughout the year for their owner’s success.
Whilst most of their Fully Managed Serviced holiday homes are positioned in the centre of St Ives, they are steadily growing the portfolio across into Carbis Bay – this has been much to the delight of returning guests who wish to base themselves out of the hustle and bustle of St Ives. Keep an eye out for new properties arriving on the website.
For those looking to achieve a better balance between managing and marketing their own
holiday home, Cornish Escapes offer a simple Marketing and Support commission rate which includes overseeing the marketing, pricing, bookings and supporting owners with their locally based team, who are ready to share their knowledge and expertise. This gives owners the time and energy to focus on managing changeovers, whether they handle them personally or use a designated third-party.
In May 2024, Cornish Escapes welcomed their first property in Port Isacc, The Shambles. Its luxurious interior design struck a chord with many of their guests, achieving booking levels on their Marketing and Support service that spread across the entire year and well into 2025 in just a matter of weeks.
If you are interested in hearing more about these services, we would encourage you to contact Cornish Escapes for a chat with their New Business Development Manager, Emma Wiggin, who comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience of letting across Cornwall.

Proper Job 0.5% and the art of moderation.
January – it’s the month of new beginnings, resolutions and recalibrating after a festive season of indulgence. While the temptation to dive headfirst into rigid detox plans is strong, the Cornish way suggests a gentler approach – moderation
Enter Proper Job 0.5%, St Austell Brewery’s low-alcohol twist on its iconic IPA. Full of zesty flavour – but without all the alcohol – it’s the perfect companion for those seeking balance without sacrificing the joy of a proper pint.
Cornwall’s rugged charm offers a natural backdrop for a healthier mindset. Whether it’s a brisk morning sea swim in the crystal waters of Porthminster Beach in St Ives, the shock of cold water jolting you to life before ambling through the quaint town streets to The Lifeboat Inn on the waterfront, or a spirited trek along the South West Coast Path, ending in a pit-stop at the Port William Inn in Tintagel, with its sweeping views over the rugged coastline of Trebarwith Strand. By mid-afternoon, you’ve earned a little reprieve.
But what to do when a well-deserved trip to the pub threatens your hard-won momentum? Fear not. This juicy, hop-led IPA is brimming with citrus, grapefruit, and pineapple notes – courtesy of Cascade, Willamette and Chinook hops – all while keeping the alcohol dial firmly in the moderation zone.
Proper Job 0.5% fits seamlessly into a sociable pint with friends, a post-walk debrief by the fire, or simply that moment of indulgence you’ve earned. It champions inclusion, allowing those pursuing healthier lifestyle changes to savour a well-bodied, punchy IPA. Whether you’re embracing mindful drinking, easing into a year of wellness, or simply fancy something refreshing, Proper Job 0.5% proves you can have your pint and drink it too.

THE PELAGIC DIVE WATCH FROM FOURTH ELEMENT
Diving beneath the surface of the ocean unveils a realm of connection and discovery. Blue Mind theory, pioneered by marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols, reveals how ocean environments can profoundly impact human psychology, reducing stress and enhancing mental wellbeing. Freediving, cold-water swimming, and snorkelling offer intimate encounters with marine ecosystems, fostering a deep appreciation for underwater biodiversity.
These immersive experiences are powerful tools for environmental awareness. By directly experiencing fragile marine habitats, we can develop an understanding of the critical importance of ocean conservation. Each underwater journey becomes a personal connection to our planet's most vital ecosystem, inspiring protection and respect for the intricate life beneath the waves.
Accessorise your new chapter of adventure and discover one of the planet’s most beautiful and unexplored places with the Pelagic dive watch from Fourth Element. British designed and Swiss-made, make the Pelagic your ocean companion.

The Cornish food scene continues to grow year on year, with amazing restaurants, cafés, bistros, gastro-pubs and high-end street food to be found at every turn. While all have their own unique style and menus, what brings them together is the understanding of seasonality. The Duchy's chefs recognise that exceptional meals begin with ingredients harvested at their peak, plucked from nearby fields or caught just hours before reaching the plate from Cornish waters. The region's farmers, fishermen and producers are more than suppliers – they have become storytellers, with each vegetable, catch and artisan product telling a story of people and place.
A plate featuring line-caught mackerel from Newlyn's fishing port, paired with wild garlic foraged from local woodlands and new potatoes from rich Cornish earth, tells a story of place, tradition and respect for natural cycles. The seasons influence not just what appears on our plates, but how we connect with our food and each other.
Cornwall's menus are also guided by the seasons. Summer introduces an abundance of fresh produce – strawberries from local fields, fragrant herbs from small-scale organic farms and vegetables that reflect the region's unique microclimate. Autumn transforms the landscape into soft tones of root vegetables, wild mushrooms and game, while winter invites slower cooking and preservation techniques that have sustained Cornish communities for generations.
The sea is integral to this culinary ecosystem. Cornwall's fishing communities have long sustained themselves and current responsible fishing practices protect marine biodiversity while providing high-quality seafood. From oysters to sustainable cod and Cornish sardines, Cornish waters remain a vital source of nourishment that connects Cornwall to its historical traditions.
Local producers have also become the cornerstone of Cornwall's foodie narrative. Small-scale bakeries, dairy farms, cider makers and artisan cheesemakers represent a commitment to quality that extends beyond commercial interests. They embody a philosophy of care for the land and traditional techniques, all while supporting community. Eating seasonally in Cornwall is not a trend, but a considered approach to food that we should all try to adopt.

Eating well and reconnecting
A taste of CORNWALL
The Alverton and The Greenbank offer something unique when it comes to contemporary dining.
Standing on the banks of Falmouth’s astir harbour, the Water’s Edge restaurant at The Greenbank draws character from the river it overlooks. This is Cornish dining at its most connected – think local fishermen delivering the day’s best, paired with the kind of service that makes you feel less like a guest and more like a favoured regular. The restaurant's panormamic views of the ever-changing riverside are perfect for long lunches or candlelit dinners. Kicking off the new year, The Greenbank’s muchloved Dessert’s On Us offer returns in January, giving diners the perfect excuse to indulge in something sweet on the house.
Meanwhile, in Truro, The Alverton combines an age-old romance with a touch of sophisticated elegance. Its restaurant, ensconced within this historic building, offers garden views as calming as its menu is enticing. February brings the Great Charity Cook-Off on the 27th, a thrilling culinary showdown in aid of Hospitality Action. Then, on 5th March, St Piran’s Day heralds the Taste of Truro evening – a celebration of the city’s flavours that promises a feast of Cornish creativity.
Both venues elevate the farmto-fork philosophy, championing local producers and seasonal ingredients. Yet, it’s their settings – The Greenbank with its salt-tanged breezes and The Alverton with its cloistered gardens – that make dining here an experience, not just a meal.
In January, when winter’s grip feels its tightest, these hotels remind us why Cornwall remains a destination for every season. Whether you’re savouring a riverside lunch or a garden-view supper, these are places where you don’t just dine – you belong.

SOURCING FROM OUR SURROUNDINGS
Using recycled metals, ethical gemstones, salvaged woods and beach sand, Justin Duance creates beautiful handmade jewellery inspired by our natural surroundings. From engagement rings and pendants to cufflinks and earrings, each piece is made with the ethos to be as environmentally friendly as possible, with upcycling at its heart. Constantly on the lookout for new and better alternatives to its extensive range of materials means Justin Duance produces beautiful yet considerate jewellery that celebrates both sustainability and aesthetics. Use your own metal, upcycle your gold, or adorn vintage diamonds to play your part in considering the environment while owning beautiful jewellery.
Playful creativity at Redruth’s Art Room, where the journey is more important than the destination.
In the heart of Redruth, amidst the windswept creativity of Cornwall, lies a place that understands the transformative power of a good scribble. The Art Room, founded by former teacher Tina Varcoe, is more than just a workshop venue – it’s a haven for anyone feeling like a square peg in a world of round holes.
Tina, a self-proclaimed champion of mess and magic, set out to create a space where the goal isn’t perfection but freedom. Forget intimidating galleries or rigidly structured classes. At The Art Room, the emphasis is on play – that glorious, liberating act that often gets shoved into a cupboard when adulthood takes hold.
Take their signature Scribblegroups, for instance. Twice a week, attendees dive into a creative unknown – no expectations, no pre-judgments, just tables brimming with materials and ideas. Whether it’s clay, printmaking, or expressive mark-making, Tina introduces the day’s theme with infectious enthusiasm and then steps back, letting participants take the reins. There’s tea, camaraderie and a refreshing absence of rules. It’s a creative sandbox for grown-ups, where self-doubt gets firmly shown the door.
For those who prefer a touch of structure, there’s no shortage of options. Fancy a
masterclass? Look no further than Roger Towndrow’s Four-Week Drawing Course, starting in February, helmed by Falmouth Uni’s former Head of Fine Art. Or channel your inner Da Vinci at the Fluxus Cornwall Invention Club, crafting automata and interactive wonders alongside likeminded makers. Even kids can get in on the action, with after-school groups and holiday workshops designed to spark young imaginations.
The beauty of The Art Room lies in its mission: to value the journey over the destination. By embracing creative play, participants often stumble upon something surprising – not just art they love but a little more love for themselves too.
So, if the New Year calls for a creative reset or just a break from life’s pressures, Redruth’s Art Room might be the perfect place to start. After all, who says adults can’t scribble their way to happiness?
You can book a workshop on their website today. Go on!
Christina Feltham, raised on a small Somerset farm, developed a deep connection to hands-on creativity early in life, influenced by a family of artists, architects, and makers. Her career began in brand design, leading to an international role that took her to Bangkok and later Australia. Inspired by Australia’s vibrant landscapes, Christina often explored nature, yet over time, her design work felt constrained. Seeking a more tactile outlet, she discovered ceramics and found it brought her sketches to life.
Upon returning to the UK, her art shifted, influenced by Cornwall’s rugged coastline and muted, earthy tones. She began creating stacked, sculptural forms echoing the rocky formations of the Cornish coast and experimenting with traditional barrel-firing techniques. Using driftwood, seaweed, and other natural materials, she achieved unique finishes where salt, metals, and combustibles
created unexpected patterns and hues. Her works often display rich ochres and red patinas reminiscent of Cornwall’s mining heritage.
Christina employs coil and slab-building methods, embracing the slow, nature-driven process of working with clay. Her finishing touches, including beeswax polish and copper wire, reflect the contrast of Cornwall’s rugged landscape and shimmering waters.
The name Tucana, chosen collaboratively with her children, symbolises the interplay of nature’s patterns and cosmic beauty, aligning with her aim to encapsulate Cornwall’s dynamic environment in her pieces.

Lesa Welch is an accomplished artist specialising in lino prints, crafted either at her home studio or in her gallery in Polperro, Cornwall. Her work draws inspiration from the sea, sailors, wild swimming and mermaids, infusing each piece with a sense of maritime magic and adventure.

Insights into Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief
Words by Stephen Maggs
In my initial comments on the Autumn Budget 2024, and our more detailed analysis, I noted that the government had proposed to cap the total of 100% inheritance tax Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR) to £1m per person, with the excess value qualifying for 50% relief. These changes are set to take effect from 6th April 2026.
As a firm, we had anticipated a significant curtailment to BPR (and worked on the basis of abolition as a worst-case scenario), but the announced cap is less severe than expected. We also foresaw changes to APR (albeit not necessarily for those owner-managed farms, thinking landlords were most at risk), and implemented a significant amount of planning before 30th October 2024 to attempt to counter this, which has now proven highly beneficial for relevant clients.
As a seasoned accountancy firm in Cornwall, RRL strongly believes that being a good advisor means predicting change (where possible and practical) but also reacting calmly to change when it comes.
There has been a lot of hyperbole and handwringing in the popular press and in other circles regarding these changes (particularly about APR), hands being thrown up in the air with momentum gathering pace, but this seems panic-driven without consideration for the actual impact for the majority of relevant businesses after informed consideration.
Whilst the changes are obviously not favourable, with prudent planning, the vast majority of businesses will escape the impact of the proposals.
Crucially, the announced £1m threshold/ cap is per individual – with prudent Will
Maggs, Tax Partner at RRL
planning (advice and adequately worded Wills – which, together with our sister legal business, RRL Wills Limited, we can provide), each owner of the business can ensure that this £1m cap/threshold is available to them. This £1m threshold is in addition to available nil-rate bands.
Additionally, the government confirmed that trusts created after 29th October will obtain a £1m cap/threshold – whilst detail is not yet available, we would expect this to be shared between trusts created by the same settlor. Consequently, subject to the publication of further detail (expected early 2025), we are expecting prudent lifetime trust planning to entail each business owner/ farmer being able to ensure £2m falls outside of their respective estate but still within the business owner/farmer control. Therefore, for a husband and wife-owned business/ farm, £4m could be free of inheritance tax with prudent Will planning and lifetime trust planning.
This is magnified when children are also brought into the business. The fundamental key to prudent inheritance tax planning for business owners/farmers will be: businesses and business owners need to consider and implement succession planning earlier than they have before (changing the previous mentality of holding all the business interest until death – relying on 100% BPR and/or APR) to obtain regular advice from a good, experienced and competent tax advisor –being prepared to accept that associated costs are an investment in mitigating the impacts of sizeable inheritance tax liabilities in the future.
This was the mindset of our clients who engaged in pre-Budget planning to manage the impact of these changes. However, whilst that ship has sailed (given rules around any gifts made from 30th October 2024), there are still plenty of planning opportunities available for the vast majority of businesses. Please don't panic. There are always solutions and planning opportunities available. Now, more than ever, good, prudent tax advice is essential, and RRL’s tax specialists in Cornwall are here to help.

EXPERIENCE A transformative
K&M Hearing Solutions can help find your joie de vivre via their hearing-based solutions.
Hearing loss is a common experience, affecting around one in five people across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. As we age, the likelihood of hearing difficulties grows significantly, with half of those over 55 and 80% of those over 70 affected. In the UK, the RNID reports that about one in three adults either have hearing loss, tinnitus, or both – a figure that highlights how vital hearing care services have become.
At K&M Hearing Solutions, they understand that hearing aids can make a difference, not only in addressing the hearing impairment, but also in slowing down hearing deterioration, easing tinnitus symptoms and keeping the brain engaged by reducing the strain of concentrating on conversations. Their team is here to support you with the best in modern hearing technology, offering packages starting from £995 per pair. As an independent practice, they have access to a wide array of manufacturers, allowing them to find a tailored solution for every individual.
If you’re experiencing symptoms such as a sense of fullness or ringing in the ears, possibly even dull hearing, a simple wax blockage may be the cause. For £60, they offer a wax consultation that

CHANGE HAPPEN
Affordable social housing is scarce, leaving many with no choice but to rent – often paying more than they would for a mortgage. They’re the lucky ones.
Millions of families across England are struggling in homes unfit for purpose, often forced to live in conditions that threaten their health and well-being. In one of the oldest housing stocks in Europe, dampness, mould and poor insulation plague countless properties, making life a constant battle for tenants. For many renters, the choice is stark: feed their families or pay ever-increasing rents. Every three minutes, a private renter faces a section 21 ‘no-fault’ eviction notice, shattering lives and destabilising communities.
The housing crisis hits hard in Cornwall, where over 25,625 households are on the social housing waiting list, left in limbo and despair. Across the south west, the numbers tell a heart-breaking story: 5,520 households in temporary accommodation, 5,720 children living without a stable home – double the figure from just five years ago – and nine families becoming homeless every single day. For these families, hope is a luxury they cannot afford.
Living in fear of eviction or enduring sleepless nights as children cough from damp-
induced illnesses stifles ambition and crushes potential. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Together, we can demand change: affordable rents, stronger tenant protections and a new generation of social housing. Shelter is on the frontlines, fighting for these rights, and you can help secure a better future.
By leaving a gift in your will to Shelter, you ensure their vital work continues, standing alongside those who need it most. Shelter won’t stop until everyone has a safe, secure home – and with your help, future generations can grow up free from the fear of homelessness.
Creating a legacy of hope is simple. Write your will for free and explore how your support can make a difference. Let’s build a future where no one is left behind.
