In the heart of north Cornwall, a secluded cabin sits as a haven to peace; a place that welcomes people and dogs alike. Its charred timbers embrace the Japandi aesthetic – a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design that merges two historic ‘lessis-more’ cultures. This style celebrates everyday beauty and a connection with nature, featuring geometric shapes, sophisticated colours and an appreciation of materials. The cabin’s expansive windows frame a stunning panorama, inviting an appreciation of the flora and fauna. Sunlight filters through the trees, casting dappled patterns throughout the space.

Inside, the cabin’s minimalist design consciously foregrounds its clean lines and natural materials, reflecting the simplicity and harmony of the surrounding landscape. Its rewilded and secluded location amplifies a sense of escape, one that can be appreciated from the wood-fired hot tub. All in all, it’s a cosy retreat no matter the season, making this cabin the perfect spot to reconnect with nature.

Dogs are welcome year-round, though in peak summer months, they must be on a lead between 9am and 5pm. With miles of dunes, rock pools, and plenty of space to roam, this beach is perfect for energetic dogs. Nestled in a charming fishing village, Gorran Haven Beach offers a peaceful retreat away from the crowds. Dogs are welcome outside of the summer restrictions (July and August), making it an ideal destination for an off-season adventure. The sheltered cove provides calm waters, perfect for a paddle, while the coastal paths offer stunning views for those looking to extend their walk beyond the beach.

Dogs are allowed all year round, providing an ideal playground for canines who love to dig, chase waves, and explore. The beach is also popular with surfers, so there’s always a lively atmosphere. Coastal paths nearby lead to dramatic cliffside views, ensuring an adventurous day out for both you and your dog.

Hannafore Beach, Looe

Overlooking Looe Island, Hannafore Beach is a dog-friendly gem with a mix of sand, pebbles, and fascinating rock pools. This lesser-known spot is perfect for those seeking a quiet beach experience with their furry friend. The beach is accessible year-round for dogs and offers scenic coastal walks, particularly along the South West Coast Path, where stunning panoramic views await.

Downderry Beach offers a mix of sand and shingle, stretching along the south coast of Cornwall. Dogs are welcome year-round, making it a fantastic destination no matter the season. The beach has a relaxed and secluded feel, making it a great spot for a leisurely walk or a peaceful game of fetch. Low tide reveals rock pools and fascinating marine life, adding an extra element of adventure for curious pups.

Daymer Beach, St. Minver

Situated near Rock, Daymer Beach is a dog-walking haven with its vast open space and fine sand. Dogs are permitted all year, and the shallow waters make it a safe spot for them to splash around. The beach is backed by dunes and links to scenic walking trails, including the path up to Brae Hill, which offers breathtaking views over the Camel Estuary. With its stunning surroundings and relaxed atmosphere, Daymer Beach is perfect for a day out with your furry friend.

Carne Beach, The Roseland

Carne Beach, located on the picturesque Roseland Peninsula, is a serene and unspoiled spot ideal for dog owners seeking tranquillity. While summer restrictions apply (July and August), the rest of the year allows for long, uninterrupted walks along the sand. Dogs are allowed all year, making it an excellent choice for those looking for a spacious, open area for their pets to run freely. EXPERIENCE

DID YOU KNOW?

The RSPCA (rspca.org.uk) advises dog owners to keep their pets safe on beaches by providing fresh water and shade to prevent heatstroke. Check for local beach restrictions and be aware of hazards like strong currents, jellyfish, sharp rocks and adders, which may be found in dunes or grassy areas. Supervise dogs at all times, particularly around cliffs and deep water and prevent them from disturbing wildlife. Always clean up after them and rinse their paws and coat to remove salt, sand, or harmful substances. If a dog is bitten by an adder, seek veterinary attention immediately.

The National Trust (nationaltrust.org.uk) offers a warm welcome to well-behaved four-legged guests where they’ll find plenty to explore. The National Trust has been working to make it easier for guests to find out how dog-friendly your visit will be before you and your four-legged friend arrive. To help with this, they’ve created a handy new pawprint rating system, giving all the places in their care a rating.

Cotehele

Perched above the River Tamar, Cotehele is a Tudor house surrounded by formal gardens, a valley garden, and expansive woodlands. Dogs are welcome to explore fully around the Cotehele grounds. There are miles of paths to explore through the woodland, countryside and around the quay. While dogs aren’t permitted inside the main house, well-behaved dogs on a short lead are welcome in some areas of the garden. Water bowls are available, and the onsite Barn Restaurant or The Edgcumbe at the quay offers outdoor seating where dogs can relax alongside their owners.

Trerice

A serene Elizabethan manor, Trerice is nestled in a secluded valley. While the formal gardens are off-limits to dogs, the surrounding meadows and orchard are perfect for on-lead walks. The hay meadows, especially during summer, are a delight to wander through. The Barn Café has outdoor seating, allowing visitors to enjoy refreshments without leaving their pets behind.

Trelissick

Overlooking the Fal Estuary, Trelissick boasts diverse landscapes, from open parkland to dense woodlands. Dogs on short leads are welcome in the garden, ensuring they stay on paths to protect the plant life. The wider estate offers miles of woodland walks and open countryside for dogs to enjoy. The café courtyard is dog-friendly, equipped with water bowls and outdoor seating. It’s essential to note that livestock often graze in the parkland, so keeping dogs under control is crucial.

Woodland trails provide scenic routes for walks, of head up Godolphin Hill to take in the expansive views. The tea-room’s outdoor seating area is dog-friendly, allowing visitors to enjoy local treats in the company of their pets. Dogs must also be kept on a lead on the farmland throughout the Godolphin estate, including the fields and Godolphin Hill, due to livestock grazing.

Glendurgan Garden

This subtropical valley garden, leading down to the hamlet of Durgan and the Helford River, is a paradise for plant lovers. Dogs on short leads are welcome in the garden from October to March, ensuring the delicate planting remains undisturbed during the peak growing season. The beach at Durgan is dog-friendly year-round, offering a delightful spot for dogs to splash in the water. While the main tea-house doesn’t permit dogs indoors, outdoor seating is available.

Lead Policies: Always check individual property guidelines regarding lead requirements. While some areas permit off-lead walking, others, especially those with livestock or delicate plantings, require dogs to be on leads. Assistance dogs are of course welcome to access all areas of the garden at all times.

Facilities: Many properties provide water bowls and waste bins. It’s a good idea to carry your own supplies, just in case.

Etiquette: Ensure your dog is well-behaved, doesn’t disturb wildlife, and respects other visitors.

Seasonal Restrictions: Some gardens have specific periods when dogs are either allowed or restricted. Always check ahead before planning your visit.

A resource for

WILDLIFE

Cornwall Wildlife Trust – safeguarding wildlife and wild places for generations to come.

It’s a beautiful time of year in Cornwall and one where many visitors come to explore the picturesque countryside views, hidden coves and over 400 miles of stunning coastline. Cornwall Wildlife Trust is keen to encourage people to enjoy the amazing wildlife in Cornwall whilst also helping to protect it.

As one of the best places in Britain for wildlife watching, you can expect to see a rich variety of marine life, including sharks, seabirds and globally rare grey seals that frequent our shores. On land, we have an exceptional array of wild creatures, many of which can be spotted at one of Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s 59 nature reserves. From beautiful butterflies to rare, colourful birds and beavers that are back after centuries – there’s plenty to see!

No matter where you’re staying, whether on the coast or inland, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy Cornwall’s amazing wildlife, and Cornwall Wildlife Trust has some great advice to help make sure our enjoyment doesn’t take precedence over the safety and wellbeing of the animals that you encounter.

First and foremost, it is important to avoid disturbing any wildlife by following the Cornwall

Marine and Coastal Code. Many wildlife species are under increasing pressure from human activity and therefore need our help and respect. Remember to give wildlife space and time, observe from a distance and avoid actions that may scare, startle or panic them and to leave only footprints when exploring.

If you want to take it a step further and actively help protect the wildlife of Cornwall, then here are a few more suggestions for you. Cornwall Wildlife Trust hosts the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS) – the central resource for wildlife and habitat information for the county. They are encouraging anyone to submit their wildlife sightings as this will help them improve understanding of the natural history of Cornwall, as well as to be used in decision-making, education, research and other public benefit purposes.

Some other great ideas include supporting local Cornish businesses whilst you are visiting, eating sustainable seafood and getting involved in a beach clean.
