£107,626

Cornwall Hospice Care is thrilled to announce that the Cornish community has come together to raise an impressive £107,626 for their annual Care at Christmas Campaign. This heartwarming support for St Julia’s and Mount Edgcumbe Hospices will help families when they need it most.

Lisa Shephard, Clinical Lead at Cornwall Hospice Care, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you for donating generously, playing our festive raffle, remembering a loved one at our Light Up A Life service, and sponsoring the children that took part in Reindeer Roundup for our hospices. From all of us, thank you!”

The festive season brings with it a sense of magic, warmth and togetherness. During Christmas in the hospices, this shines through the tireless efforts of staff and volunteers who work together to create memorable experiences for patients.

Michelle Morse, Healthcare Assistant shared a story from St Julia’s Hospice at Christmas; “We had a lovely lady at St Julia’s Hospice, who was here over the Christmas period. A choir came in to sing carols and this lady’s friends said it wasn’t her thing. The patient then asked to be put in a wheelchair, to have her beaker filled with Baileys and ice and to be taken to reception. Well, this patient danced, sang along with the carols and swigged down two beakers of Baileys. It was her way of saying this is my last Christmas, so I’m going to be merry and bright.”

The charity relies almost entirely on the support of the Cornish community to keep its 20 hospice beds open and to offer vital bereavement services and Lymphoedema clinics free of charge.

Immerse yourself with Kernow Springs Nordic Spa

Kernow Springs Nordic Spa at The Saltbox in Wadebridge, which opened in April last year, is proving to be a huge success, drawing regular visitors, rave reviews and a growing membership community over 100 strong.

Business owner Martin Dean tells us that: “We have been building and installing our wood-fired hot tubs, saunas and outdoor spa solutions across the South West for over ten years now and our emphasis has always been on hot and cold immersion therapy.”

Between rounds of the hot tub and sauna, Martin’s experienced team encourages clients to build up their time progressively in the cold plunge pool for a dopamine hit that creates big smiles and an overall feeling of wellness.

Holiday lets and the FHL allowance

All holiday homeowners should now be aware that the Furnished Holiday Let allowance has been abolished and that there will be more changes from April.

Announced at the final Conservative budget in March 2024 and followed through by the new Labour government, the idea is to promote fairness across all property businesses. There has been campaigning by self-catering agencies and industry bodies, stating that holiday homes that qualify should continue to be seen as trading businesses – considering the marginal profits and the commercial nature of professional holiday letting.

Previously, owners were able to claim capital allowances with access to relief on chargeable gains, along with pension contributions, so long as the FHL criteria were met.

From 5th April, the capital allowance claims will be removed, and owners will only be

able to have relief for the replacement of domestic items such as toasters and vacuum cleaners. Loan interest will now be restricted to the basic rate for Income Tax, and relief for chargeable gains for trading business assets and pensions will be removed.

The advice is to seek guidance from your accountant or a specialist who is familiar with Capital Allowance reclaims (a fact not always known by some professionals) and ensure that you have submitted claims by the April deadline.

Looking for advice on buying or running your holiday let, or wishing to discuss these issues in more detail? Then contact Fixer Property & Management.

The spirit of adventure

After stepping away from a corporate career in 2006, Samantha Wardman moved to the stunning landscapes of west Cornwall. As a seasoned traveller and photographer with a passion for adventure, a short career sabbatical, led her to discover an incredible travel company, Inspiring Destinations. “This was the perfect match for my experience and love for discovering bucket-list destinations. I now combine my extensive travel knowledge, expert planning skills, and the resources of a top travel business to create tailor-made trips that are both personal and affordable,” says Samantha. Samantha is ABTA and ATOL affiliated and with no added commission on bookings, she ensures you get a fantastic deal on a journey crafted just for you.

At the beginning of 2024, Samantha was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, thanks to the exceptional team at the Royal

Cornwall Hospital’s Mermaid Centre, her cancer was detected early and the prognosis is incredibly positive. Though her life took an unexpected turn, Samantha believes having something to look forward to is crucial for anyone battling cancer, and for her, that something is travel. She has now embarked on her own trip of a lifetime that will take her to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and the USA, while raising awareness about the availability of more affordable travel insurance options, making travel more accessible for others in similar situations. As part of her support for Cancer Research UK, Samantha will donate 10% of all holiday bookings made by readers affected by cancer and her fundraising page can be found by clicking the QR code. Sleeper train

ADVENTURE

Board in Cornwall, wake up in the heart of London refreshed and ready to explore the capital.

There is something irresistibly romantic about boarding a sleeper train, settling into your own private cabin, and waking up to the quiet hum of London as it comes to life. Great Western Railway’s Night Riviera Sleeper is not just a way to travel between Cornwall and the capital – it is an experience in its own right, a journey that blends the literary idea of classic rail travel – think Daphne du Maurier, Pascal Mercier, Michael Palin – with the pull of modern convenience.

Step onto the platform in Cornwall, and your journey awaits. The evening air is cool; the train, resplendent in its green livery, awaits. Passengers with cabins are invited into the Night Riviera Sleeper Lounge, where a warm drink and a comfortable chair set the scene for the night ahead. The demands of the day slip away as the train glides out of the station.

As you close your cabin door behind you, you’ll find that the space is both private and practical. Crisp white bedding, a soft pillow, a wash basin tucked neatly into the corner – small details that transform the train into a place of rest rather than simply a means of transport. Settle in with a book or head to the lounge car for a drink, as the landscape rolls past in the dark, occasionally lit up by street lamps or lights from houses, the reassuring sensation of movement lulling you towards sleep.

At some point in the night, Cornwall gives way to Devon, then Somerset, then the Home Counties. There is no need to mark the miles or count the stations as the Night Riviera Sleeper invites you to simply enjoy the journey. By the time you stir in the morning, the train is approaching London. The city wakes as you do, with a complimentary breakfast delivered to your cabin, a quiet

indulgence before the pace of the day begins. A hot shower awaits in the First Class Lounge at Paddington, along with the knowledge that you have arrived rested, ready to make the most of the day ahead.

For those travelling on business, this is a way to reclaim time – to avoid the early morning flight or the tiresome, bleary-eyed rush of the first train out of Cornwall. Instead, arrive in the capital refreshed, able to walk into meetings with energy and focus.

For leisure travellers, the Night Riviera adds another layer to a London trip, making the journey itself an integral part of the adventure. Theatreland, the great museums, the hidden corners of the city all await.

With 2-for-1 entry at many attractions (www.nationalrail.co.uk/days-out-guide), there is every reason to step straight from the platform into the heart of the capital’s cultural life.

Some choose to travel up overnight but return by day, missing out on one of the true joys of the service. The Night Riviera is not just a way to

get to London; it allows you to enjoy a full day of city life, before boarding again at Paddington and letting the train carry you home. Cornwall waits in the morning, its coastline, harbours, and winding lanes welcoming you.

The beauty of the Night Riviera lies in its simplicity. No check-in queues, no long airport transfers and no early alarms. Just the gentle motion of the train, the privacy of a wellappointed cabin with ever-changing views, and the knowledge that by morning, you will be somewhere new and exciting. In winter, when the nights are long and the days crisp, there is no better way to travel. And with cabins available from £49* alongside your train ticket, it is as much an indulgence as it is a practical choice.

A journey by rail is one of life’s great pleasures, and the Night Riviera Sleeper is one of the finest ways to experience it. Cornwall and London are two very different places, but between them runs a line that allows you to drift from one to the other as the country sleeps. Step aboard, settle in, and let the miles pass below you – unnoticed.

* Prices are correct as of 2nd March 2025 and are subject to availability. A valid train ticket is required in addition to the cabin supplement. Cabin reservations are optional; seating is available on this service. Terms and conditions apply.

BEGINNINGSNew

This year will see the reopening of Kota Restaurant with a refurbishment, rebrand and a change of concept.
Words

It’s hard to believe that by the end of April we will be entering our 20th year of opening. I remember the day we met up with Steve and Jo Critchard who owned the building before us when it was Critchard’s Seafood Restaurant. They were a lovely couple who wanted to sell up as they had been there for a while and I asked them how long they had had the restaurant. When they said 16 years, I thought that was an incredibly long time to be in the same place, but now I have surpassed it! So, with the 20th year in mind, it only felt right to jazz things up and start the year with a big bang. People have asked me why we are changing, as they love Kota the way it is. My response is, that I think a change has been coming for a while and a reinvigoration of our offering is needed to move forward. When I had a chat with my management team late last year with a plan to go in a new direction, it was also met with slight hesitation as we have been happy doing ‘our thing’ for a while. With that in mind, we needed to be sure of the new concept

before we announced and executed it. It’s been hard to let go of some of the things that I have loved about Kota, such as the branding and feel, but I know our new concept will be exciting for everyone.

Kota will become a restaurant with wine bar. It means we will be open for lunch and dinner, whilst the bar will also be used as a shop and tasting room for our wines. The menus will be made up of small dishes which we have coined ‘Cornish Pinxos’. Each dish will be mini courses on their own right, matched with wine expertly picked by our excellent team. It means there will be more flexibility in how many dishes you choose to order. We will also be including a Chef’s Menu that will be made up of the best ingredients from the Cornish Pinxos plates and specials, as well as offering a selection of exciting bar snacks and dishes to choose from if you only fancy a quick bite. For those who may like something a bit bigger to share, we will have a large cut of either beef T-bone steak, saddle of lamb, rack of venison or a fish dish, all designed to share.

Eventually we will be launching the Kota Wine Club. You will be able to choose from an amazing case of wine or individual bottles each month, accompanied by a recipe card matching the wines with food you can cook at home. In order to fully embrace this new concept, we will be unveiling new branding, uniforms, interior design and furniture at Kota. We are very excited for our opening on the 13th February with our ‘Wine and Dine’ experience.

As exciting as the reopening of Kota is, I couldn’t not touch on some of the fabulous produce that is around at the moment. Even in late winter, there is an abundance of ingredients to cook with. Brassicas and root vegetables are still in season and we are now starting to see purple spouting broccoli, salsify, rhubarb, and chicory making an appearance. It’s a great time to utilise mussels, clams, scallops, oysters, which love the colder weather. There’s plenty of fishing to be had at this time of year, as long as the boats can get out in the stormy weather. There’s nothing like a seafood chowder with crusty bread on a cold evening to warm you up. Apart from our usual meats, we still have wonderful game to be eaten such as teal, venison, pheasant, partridge, and woodcock. They really are a seasonal treat and a great source of lean healthy protein – buy them while you can as the season is nearing its end.

FROM FIELD to shelf

Fresh, local, sustainable: Boscastle Farm Shop’s new extension is redefining the way we buy, putting food miles at the fore.

Set on the cliffs of north Cornwall, Boscastle Farm Shop has long since been a destination for food lovers. Now, with an exciting expansion, it’s set to become a must-visit. The new farm shop and butchery extension has more than doubled the floor space, bringing with it a host of new offerings while staying true to its ethos of quality, sustainability, and local sourcing.

At the heart of the expansion is the butchery – one that has been a cornerstone of Boscastle Farm Shop since its inception 12 years ago. Beef comes courtesy of Boscastle Farm’s own herd of North Devon Red Ruby cattle, reared on the cliffs that you can see from the café and butchered on-site, ensuring almost zero food miles. The new butchery also boasts its own state-of-the-art hanging room and, with a commitment to traditional butchering, pre-packaged and vacuum-sealed meat is a thing of the past. Instead, customers can select their preferred cuts and discuss their choices with resident butcher, Trev, who has been with the farm shop since the very beginning.

Beyond the butchery, the newly expanded space offers a more immersive shopping experience. With extra room to explore, produce is beautifully showcased, making it easier for visitors to appreciate the wealth of local goods on offer. The deli section is a treasure trove of handmade delights, featuring pasties, sausage rolls, quiches, scones, and award-winning Scotch eggs, all

crafted in the farm’s own café. Meanwhile, the fresh fruit and vegetable displays burst with seasonal produce, reinforcing the farm shop’s commitment to freshness and quality. For those with a taste for the finer things, the farm shop’s alcohol section is a true highlight, featuring an impressive 95% of beers, ciders, wines, and spirits sourced locally. The dairy and cheese selection are equally exceptional, with offerings from renowned local producers such as Rodda’s and Trewithen Dairy and The Greet Cheese Company. The commitment to supporting local ‘food heroes’ also extends to the dry goods section, with products from trusted names like Halzephron Herb Farm and The Bay Tree Food Co.

Of course, no visit would be complete without indulging in something sweet from the delightful range of chocolates, biscuits and fudge, all sourced as close to home as possible. Whether you’re picking up a gift, stocking your pantry, or simply treating yourself, there’s something here to satisfy every craving and Boscastle Farm Shop continues to raise the bar for farm-to-table excellence in Cornwall.

Seascape artist showcases new work

Vincent is a self-taught artist born in Maldon Essex, he was educated at Thurstable School in Tiptree where his paintings were first exhibited as a young teenager. His work has been displayed in prestigious galleries in London, Essex, Suffolk and South West England.

Vincent has developed a passion for painting seascapes after living in Cornwall in his early twenties. The main medium for his work is oil. He moved back to Cornwall eight years ago with his partner Jane to the town of Wadebridge, where he has a purpose built studio/gallery adjacent to his home which overlooks the River Camel and the Camel Trail, which is open from 10 am to 4pm every day. If these times don’t suit, then Vincent is happy for people to call him to see if he is available outside of these hours.

Several of the paintings are available as Limited Edition Prints and Commissions are undertaken, samples of which can be seen on the website.

We are delighted to showcase Vincent’s first completed painting of 2025, ‘Crantock Sunset’. This will be available as a Limited Edition Print – it will be supplied in a double mount which surrounds the print.

In 2025, Vincent will be holding solo exhibitions at the Padstow Institute (Padstow PL28 8AB) on the following dates: 3rd to 11th May, 4th to 14th July and 8th to 14th September.

Ancient motifs and landscapes

From 6th March to 4th April 2025, the Porthminster Gallery presents Patrick Haughton – Earth Song, an exhibition of new and recent elegantly understated paintings and painted relief constructions on board, inspired by the ancient landscapes of west Cornwall.

An exploration of the remnant, fugitive shadows residually tracing the passage of life through time and place. The artists’ works on show are complemented with abstract

bronze sculptures by Margaret Lovell, and Tommy Rowe, and ceramic sculptures by Peter Hayes, who, in keeping with Nicholson and Haughton, are also inspired by ancient motifs and landscapes. The Own Art 0% APR purchase plan is available on all works in the show.

Inlaid with love

Inspired by her surroundings and a keen conservationist for the ocean and the environment, Mel Chambers brings to life the beauty of poetry, inspiring quotes and images of all the magic that surrounds us. Her work portrays not only the beauty of the wild but also that which surrounds us daily, including the animals and beings that share our everyday lives and are closest to our hearts. Her authentically Cornish and exquisitely hand-carved and inlaid pieces are created using ancient 13th-century inlay techniques. Individually hand-carved (not painted), these tiles feature beautiful images and inspiring words, all held eternal in earth and time. Featured is one of Mel’s latest works, ‘Fallen Angel’. Commissions are welcomed and Mel’s work can be viewed at her studio near the beautiful Helford River. For more information visit www. alchemytiles.com or call 07768 193848.

This Grade II listed edifice, dating from the 19th century, invites couples to marry within its storied walls. It is a building that offers couples a wedding venue that intertwines the charm of yesteryear with contemporary sophistication.

The heart of The Alverton's wedding allure is The Great Hall. With its soaring nineteenth-century architecture, it provides an awe-inspiring setting for ceremonies, accommodating up to 150 guests. The hall's majestic ambience ensures that every moment, from the exchange of vows to the celebratory toasts, is steeped in urbanity.

Beyond the hall, the hotel's private gardens beckon. Manicured lawns, ancient trees and a sun-tempting terrace create a picturesque backdrop for photographs that will be cherished for a lifetime. As the sun casts its golden hue, couples can capture memories amidst nature's splendour.

Culinary excellence is at the forefront of the experience. HOLIDAY LETTING HOT TOPICS

Katy Falconer, Owner Experience Manager at John Bray Cornish Holidays, shares her insights on the latest industry talking points.

With over 50 years of experience, John Bray Cornish Holidays understands that property owners have questions before each new season and 2025 is no exception. With that in mind, we asked Owner Experience Manager, Katy Falconer, to run through some of the common queries.

What lies ahead in terms of customer demand and bookings?

Bookings at our 250+ holiday homes on the north Cornwall coastline continue to flow in, with positive indicators for the year ahead. Our annual survey of 1,000 UK adults conducted in November revealed that 80% are considering UK holiday accommodation in the next year, with 25% specifically looking at Devon and Cornwall. Many properties have already secured over 20 bookings for 2025, reinforcing optimism about continued demand.

Booking trends show a 3.7% year-on-year increase per property, with short breaks gaining popularity. In 2024, 24% of Cornwall bookings were for three to five-night stays, up from 22% in 2023. These mini-breaks benefit owners, as two short stays can generate up to 178% of the income from a single week-long booking.

Last-minute bookings are also rising, particularly for smaller properties. In 2024, 30% of one-bedroom bookings in Cornwall were made within four weeks of arrival. Additionally, pet-friendly properties remain in high demand, with more than 60% of listed homes now catering to dog owners, broadening their market appeal.

Owners who adapt to evolving customer preferences are more likely to see strong booking levels and increased income.

What government changes should owners be aware of?

Recent legislative changes include the abolishment of the Furnished Holiday Let tax regime and updated fire safety regulations. Here at John Bray Cornish Holidays, we offer support through our in-house legal team and Owner Portal, ensuring that owners remain informed and compliant. For further guidance, owners can reach out to our expert team.

How can owners maximise income while maintaining a hassle-free letting experience?

Selecting the right letting agent is crucial. For example, our dedicated teams in Rock and Port Isaac provide full-service property management, covering bookings, administration, changeovers and maintenance to deliver a seamless letting experience.

A strong national marketing presence further enhances bookings. We invest over £35 million annually, utilising platforms like Booking.com, dynamic pricing and intuitive booking software. Additionally, support for local charities and initiatives strengthens community ties. Superb property care, combined with outstanding booking and income levels… we believe it’s the dream combination.

For a free, no-obligation income appraisal, owners can contact the New Property Team using the information below.

Making the most of school open days.

Aschool’s Open Day is an opportunity for prospective families to experience its ethos, facilities, and atmosphere. While these events may not perfectly reflect a ‘regular’ school day, they provide valuable insights into whether a school will be a good fit for your child.

At Truro School, they believe that the best way to understand what makes their school special is by talking to the people who know it best – the pupils and teachers. Their open events, which include a pre-prep, prep school, senior school, and sixth form Open Day, are designed to give families plenty of opportunities to do both.

The pupils are without doubt Truro School’s best ambassadors, and as tour guides, they help showcase the school’s valuesbased approach, which balances academic excellence with the development of wellrounded individuals. Visiting families can learn a lot by talking to current pupils. While tours will highlight the school’s best aspects, genuine insights often emerge when pupils share their honest opinions about favourite (or least favourite) subjects, teachers, or school life.

Teachers play an equally vital role in shaping a child’s experience. Taking the time to speak with subject specialists and pastoral leaders can provide a clearer picture of how the school supports academic progress, individual

learning styles, and personal development. Conversations with teachers can also reveal the school’s approach to education beyond the curriculum – how they inspire curiosity, grow confidence, and support pupil wellbeing. Whether it’s discussing the structure of a typical school day, the balance of challenge and support in lessons, or the opportunities for enrichment outside the classroom, these interactions can help parents gauge whether the school’s ethos aligns with their expectations.

Our advice is to plan plenty of time for an Open Day. Choosing a new school can be stressful and feeling rushed or unable to delve into certain topics or concerns can be frustrating. Truro School’s open events provide a time for talks with leadership teams, classroom activities, informal chats with current parents and admissions support.  Truro School always encourages visitors to think beyond a single open event. With the option to return for a private tour or a taster day, this gives the opportunity for an even deeper understanding of what makes this school truly great.

Redefining the future OF DENTAL CARE

PortmanDentex – ensuring that the dental care you receive is not couched in trepidation.

Trust is a fragile thing, but when it comes to dental care, it is the foundation upon which confidence is built. PortmanDentex, with its network of practices across Cornwall, has turned this principle into a mission, delivering care that goes beyond routine dental health check-ups to transform smiles and lives.

For many, the dentist’s chair can be a place of apprehension. PortmanDentex, however, is rewriting that narrative. Whether it’s the gentle encouragement offered to nervous patients or the tailored solutions for every stage of life, their ethos is rooted in making dental care approachable, effective and tailored for the individual. At the heart of their approach lies a simple yet profound belief: good dental health is an integral part of a healthier, happier existence.

Walking into a PortmanDentex practice in Cornwall, it’s immediately apparent that this isn’t just about teeth; it’s about people. From the warm professionalism of the reception staff to the nuanced expertise of their clinicians, the experience is one of

care tailored to the individual. This sense of attentiveness isn’t a result of coincidence but a clear recognition of what a patient should expect in this day and age.

Routine dental care forms the bedrock of what they do. It’s not just about spotting problems; it’s about preventing them.

Regular dental health check-ups and hygiene appointments are encouraged as a way to stave off future complications, saving both discomfort and cost in the long run. This proactive approach ensures that smiles remain as healthy as they are bright, with fewer surprises down the road.

When more intensive treatments are required, PortmanDentex offers a comprehensive range of options, all delivered with meticulous attention to detail. For those dealing with damaged or weak teeth, crowns provide a robust and aesthetically pleasing solution. These tooth-shaped caps restore not just function but confidence, a tangible reminder that modern dentistry is as much about rebuilding self-esteem as it is about physical repair.

Then there are the fillings – unassuming yet vital. A cavity, left unchecked, is a quiet saboteur, slowly eroding the integrity of a tooth. Swift intervention ensures that damage is halted in its tracks, preserving as much of the natural structure as possible. It’s this blend of practicality and precision that defines the care on offer.

For those facing the more profound loss of a tooth – or even several – dental implants present a life-changing solution. Unlike traditional dentures, implants feel almost indistinguishable from natural teeth, restoring not just the mechanics of chewing but also the spontaneity of a smile. The results are transformative, allowing patients to reclaim their confidence with every bite and every word spoken.

Cosmetic concerns are no less addressed. An uneven smile can be gently reshaped through Invisalign® clear aligners, a discreet and effective way to achieve alignment without the conspicuousness of traditional braces. For some, the journey to straighter teeth is completed in just a matter of months, a testament to how far orthodontics has come in blending efficiency with aesthetics.

A discoloured smile, too, finds its remedy here. Teeth whitening, whether through at-home kits or in-practice treatments, is tailored to fit lifestyles and budgets, delivering results that are as natural-looking as they are confidence-boosting. The simplicity of the treatment belies its impact, lighting up faces as effectively as any cosmetic enhancement.

Beyond these core services, PortmanDentex’s offerings extend into realms that underline their versatility. From tooth removal and dentures to composite bonding and porcelain veneers, the spectrum of treatments ensures that every dental need is met with the same level of care and expertise. Even facial aesthetics, an area often seen as separate from dentistry, finds a home here, illustrating the holistic view they take of personal confidence and well-being.

And for those whose dental anxieties have kept them away from the chair, sedation services offer a lifeline. The ability to feel at ease, even during procedures that might otherwise provoke stress, is a game-changer, opening the door to care for those who need it most.

What makes PortmanDentex particularly remarkable is not just the breadth of its services but the depth of its commitment to the communities it serves. While they’re undeniably a large group, with over a million patients under their care each year, they’ve mastered the art of retaining the personal touch. In Cornwall, their practices stand as testament to this philosophy, providing local care with global expertise. It’s this marriage of scale and intimacy that sets them apart, ensuring that every patient feels valued as an individual rather than a number.

The smiles that leave a PortmanDentex practice are, of course, the most visible testament to their success. But behind each one lies a story of collaboration, innovation, and dedication. It’s a reminder that dental care is about much more than clinical precision; it’s about enabling people to face the world with confidence and joy. In doing so, PortmanDentex has become more than a provider of dental services – they’ve become a partner in life’s moments, big and small.

For those seeking care in Cornwall, the invitation is clear: speak to your local PortmanDentex practice. Whether it’s a routine check-up or a more specialised treatment, their promise remains the same: to provide the care you can trust, delivered with skill, warmth and an unwavering commitment to your well-being. In their hands, a smile is not just maintained but celebrated, ensuring that every patient leaves a little brighter than when they arrived.

Please note that some of the treatments mentioned will be subject to a clinical assessment to see if they are suitable for the individual.

THE COMMUNITY Giving to

The Trust has had an incredible fundraising year in 2024, with generous individuals, communities, pubs, and organisations continuing to raise vital funds. In 2024, the Trust donated more than £95,000 to important causes in the region and is now welcoming new applications for 2025.

The Trust accepts applications year-round and is now encouraging individuals and charities across the region to apply for grants to kickstart their year. More than a third of all money raised is donated to individuals and small local groups, from Cornwall up to Somerset. Examples of where the money has helped in past years include funding home equipment needed for people with disabilities, as well as buying an adaptive surf wheelchair for a small, water charity in Bude.

The primary purpose of the Trust is to support local campaigns for organisations designed to help people in need or to support individuals who don’t have access to charity donations in the ‘normal’ way. The Trust also supports largerscale charities, such as the air ambulances of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, the RNLI and Young Lives vs Cancer.

Last year, St Austell Brewery hosted its annual Celtic Beer Festival with all profits donated to

the Trust. The event in November saw more than 1,300 revellers descend on the brewery to enjoy beers and live music, raising £12,000.

Another successful event was last year’s St Austell Brewery Charity Gala evening, which featured a silent auction and raised an additional £47,000.

Piers Thompson, Chair of the St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust, said: “The fundraising efforts for the Trust have blown us away, and as a result of the dedication of our pub teams, individuals and businesses, we are encouraging communities and causes to apply for the funds that are there to enhance and improve the lives of people across the South West.

“Whether you are an individual in need of home equipment to make life easier or a small regional CIC running a life-enhancing project, we encourage people to apply for the funds.”
