We understand Cornwall’s property market better than anyone else As we enter the winter, the number of properties for sale are at a record low whilst demand from buyers remains at near all time highs. If you are planning a move in 2022, the early months of the new year are likely to be among the best of the year in which to sell

here is no doubt that times are challenging and, as I write, we are facing another round of restrictions and uncertainties. It has, therefore, never been more important than now to adopt a positive mindset and make the most of our beautiful county. With that in mind, our cover feature this issue (page 21) has some great suggestions for how we can all make a new start this year, looking after body, mind and planet in the best way possible. There is no doubt that being in Cornwall, whether that be visiting or living here, is uplifting in itself and over the coming pages we are celebrating just that. From page 29, you’ll find properties of disctinction ready to welcome new families across their thesholds. Turn to page 36 and beyond, and you’ll discover interior inspiration to excite and delight; the new year is the perfect time to give our homes a makeover and make them as beautiful as they can be. We’re delighted to bring you our choice of stunning places to stay across the county (from page 52), and what better way to beat the winter blues than to plan your next holiday adventure to the Duchy? There are so many incredible places, people and businesses in Cornwall that now is the time to embrace this ‘wonderfulness’ and appreciate how lucky we are to be a part of it. From everyone here at Cornwall Living, we would like to wish you all a very safe, peaceful and fruitful New Year!

Regaining your lost confidence

wner Cassie King, set up The Wig Sanctuary 13 years ago in Somerset after seeing her loved one’s affected by cancer. She has relocated to the beautiful Cornish countryside where, for the past year, she has been helping women of all ages, with their various hair concerns, from her idyllic new Wig Sanctuary Studio. “From childhood dolls to celebrities, transforming hair has always been my passion and delight,” Cassie tells us, “After training and working in London’s West End as a hairstylist, I ran my own hair salons, where working with wigs became part of the wonderful experience.” Although Cassie doesn’t make the wigs herself, she can facilitate custom-made ones if required. However, holding a good stock and having access to thousands of beautiful, ready-made wigs, it’s seldom required. “Hair loss can be devastating,” explains Cassie, “especially for women and I’m well aware of the conflicting emotions that some may feel in even making that first contact with me. I can only assure them I’m here to help ”

According to Cassie’s customer feedback, the whole experience is unexpectedly enjoyable, and often laced with laughter. “Seeing my lovely client’s, leave peacefully, with regained confidence, is deeply rewarding, and such a blessing for all.” Cassie is often asked about her consultation fee, but she chooses to give her time freely and also supports Cornish charities, inviting optional donations to her collecting box, and her client’s kind donations and fund-raising events have raised over £13,000. A greener way

for your garden

Whilst in itself a natural product, timber fencing requires yearly maintenance to protect it from the elements and keep it looking its best. This normally involves varnishes, algaecides or other chemicals that can be extremely damaging to the environment, and further down the line these type of fences will require repair or replacement. ColourFence is not only 100% recyclable, but has a recycled content to it and does not require maintenance with chemical products. Steel does not degrade during the recycling process, so can continue to be recycled time and time again. Want to be even more nature friendly? Ask ColourFence’s fitting teams about installing a hedgehog hole to help the

spikey little gardener’s friend get about your neighbourhood. With a free, no-obligation quote, getting started couldn’t be simpler. For more information call 01637 222578 or visit colourfencecornwall.co.uk

Walking 100 miles at 91 years old On the outskirts of Falmouth is a hidden valley hotel, complete with its own private beach. Refurbished in the spring of 2021, Hotel Meudon is a stylish retreat, boasting nine acres of sub-tropical gardens, enchanting sea views and 29 beautiful bedrooms. Whether you’re taking advantage of the exclusive packages, mid-week breaks and special offers for a luxurious spring stay, or perhaps just visiting for the day, Restaurant Meudon, The Drawing Room and Freddie’s Bar are open to all, and let’s not forget the enticing beauty of the hotel grounds. A stay, day visit or a special celebration at Hotel Meudon will offer you time to sit back and unwind whilst enjoying stunning surroundings, exquisite food and topquality service. For more information call 01326 250541 or visit www.meudon.co.uk

Last year, 91-year-old John Cottrell set himself a challenge to walk 100 miles before his 92nd birthday in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care. A founding member and ex-treasurer of the charity’s Falmouth Fundraising Group, he began the challenge in the summer of 2021. Unfortunately, he suffered a fall and had to be admitted to hospital, but that didn’t stop him! His physiotherapist measured a 100-foot distance within the ward which he walked, keeping a tally as he completed each length. Once home, he then completed his total, raising more than £5,000! “I had to do something after all that time cooped up at home,” says John. “With all that’s happened in the last 18 months, I thought what could I do to help? I’ve had wonderful support all the way along

from the members of the group and from my church.” For more information visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

“Realising the importance of using the best quality products for the best quality finish, ulux for me shone through the rest by far,” explains Emma. “Applying to be part of the Dulux Select Decorator Team was one of my best decisions. With the bonds built with fellow Dulux Select Decorators and the support we give to each other, it’s a fantastic team to be part of. I love what I do, it is truly my passion. When I recently went to The Dulux Gala Renowned artist Kurt Jackson has released a new limited-edition poetry book celebrating a location close to his heart, the Kenidjack Valley. This delicate pamphlet could be the perfect gift for the art lover in your life. Tightly edited and designed in association with the artist, this is the second in a series of poetry collections by Jackson, produced to accompany his current exhibition, Kenidjack: A Cornish Valley exhibition. Produced to complement his paintings from the show, this collection of sketchbook drawings and poems are all previously unpublished. Kurt Jackson’s online shop also offers a selection of limited-edition prints, books, catalogues and sustainable jewellery designed by the artist. Sleeping beauty Getting a good night’s sleep should be on everyone’s list of New Year resolutions. Not only does it improve your attention and concentration, it can also help to keep your energy levels up and to stay sharp and focused all day long. Good sleeping habits are also helpful for maintain a healthy weight, as if you’re not sleeping properly your body will need more energy because it’s awake for longer. It’s also thought that being sleep-deprived could increase your appetite, as it changes the level of hormones that signal hunger and fullness in your body. There are also benefits of sleep for your immune system as it gives your body the time it needs to rest and repair.

Let’s get physical It’s become more important than ever to look after your body; it makes perfect sense, it’s the only one we have and we should take care of it. It’s proven that exercise not only reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, it also boosts mood, self-esteem and energy. If you’re not keen on a gym, then swimming is a great low-impact alternative, or simply swapping lunch at your desk for a brisk walk will benefit. Walking is also great for both mind and body, combining fresh air with gentle exercise, and in Cornwall there’s the added benefit of being able to soak up some stunning clifftop views at the same time.

Nourish the soul They say ‘you are what you eat’, and if that’s the case then we should all be more mindful about what we are fuelling our body with. Eating a good breakfast is the ideal way to set you up for the day; it kick-starts your metabolism and helps to keep blood sugars even throughout the day. Increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables is essential for maintaining a balanced diet and supplies those essential vitamins and minerals our bodies need to function. Subscribing to a fruit and vegetable weekly delivery, such as Newquay-based FruutBox (fruutbox.com), is an easy way to increase your intake and supports local growers and suppliers.

Find the balance Hollie from alance Wellness (balancewellness.co.uk) in Rock advises visiting a spa or wellness space to encourage you to switch off, de-stress and relax this year: “Spa treatments aim to target the parasympathetic nervous system, enabling your body to heal and rest, which is something we all need during our busy lives. There is also the added benefit of strengthening our immune system, increase our energy levels, improving our circulation, releasing endorphins, and aiding digestion, detoxification and lymphatic drainage removing any build up from toxins within the body. And not forgetting releasing any tension within the body.” “In our busy lives we often forget to give time to ourselves, to allow our body to recover and heal from stressful situations or from general day to day life. It is vital that we get time to ourselves to allow our body and mind to unwind, giving it the support it needs to function properly. At Balance we are different to your normal spa. We have created an environment which bridges the gap between medical and spa, with

comforting heated blankets and soft lighting. We offer a very specialist approach, with highly qualified therapists. We prefer not to follow set treatment protocols, and so we tailor each treatment to you and what your skin and body needs. Prior to each treatment we take the time to understand you and your lifestyle, developing an understanding about what you want to get out of the treatment. During treatments, we use a combination of botanically driven, medical grade skincare products and 100% organic products, enabling us to target the skin cells and give our body the ingredients it needs.” With a background in nursing, Hollie is able to combine her medical knowledge with a holistic approach when treating the skin, in a safe and supportive environment. Balance also offers Touch Therapy wellness rituals to anyone going through cancer or who has a compromised immune system. These rituals have been designed to soothe the senses and calm the mind, using slow, soothing and rhythmic techniques providing complete tranquillity and relaxation. This treatment is also extremely beneficial for anyone who is suffering from long Covid.

“When visiting a spa, people going through cancer are often turned away. At Balance I wanted to create a wellness space which welcomes everyone and anyone, including those who are suffering from certain medical conditions,” explains Hollie. “Going through cancer or suffering from a medical condition is a very difficult time, therefore having a place to visit to be able to relax and heal is vital during their treatment. It has such a positive impact on their immune system.”

Not so fantastic plastic It’s not just our bodies that need looking after, our planet is certainly in need of some tlc too. According to Cornish environmental charity, Surfers Against Sewage (sas.org,uk), everyday approximately eight million pieces of plastic pollution finds its way to our oceans, and plastic makes up 80% of all studied marine debris. No-one wants their stroll along a Cornish beach to be accompanied by a sea of plastic waste, but there are a few small steps we can all take to reduce, reuse and recycle. Swapping plastic cups, straws and bottles for reusable alternatives is a small but valuable step we can all take this year. Joining in on a beach clean is also a great hands-on way of helping to keep the rubbish off our sands.

Water therapy There’s nothing quite like a bit of adrenaline to make you feel alive! Getting those endorphins going by trying a new and exciting sport is a brilliant way to feel uplifted. Wild swimming has seen a huge surge in popularity in Cornwall over recent years. Happy groups of swimming souls brave the waves up and down the Duchy. Cold water is proven to have excellent benefits for both mind and body, and the best thing is, it’s free If you prefer to be on the water rather than in it, then Cornwall is the ultimate ocean playground for surfing, SUP-ing and sailing.

Giving the gift of time Why not make volunteering one of your resolutions for this year? Not only does it benefit those you help, it can even make you feel happier and healthier. With so many deserving charities across Cornwall, we recommend choosing one that’s close to your heart. There are so many ways that you can help, whether that be volunteering in person or fundraising.

he Courtyard at Duporth is a unique collection of 38, two and three-bedroom homes. Centred around a landscaped courtyard and a restored Grade II listed clock tower, you ll find The Courtyard tucked away above a secluded beach overlooking St ustell ay. The design of The Courtyard at Duporth was one of careful and sympathetic restoration of existing buildings together with a range of new build homes designed to complement the existing buildings and surroundings. rchitects tride Treglown designed a range of buildings and spaces all telling their own story, with a variety of character to suit a low maintenance modern living. The common feature is a consistent attention to detail and quality, always making the most of the light, space and outlook. At the heart of the development is the clock tower, enhanced by its courtyard garden setting with native flower species and tranquil places to sit and soak up the Cornish sun. Formerly the Rashleigh Estate and Manor, you’ll find uporth on the Cornish coast, south of St Austell. In the 1930s Duporth was opened to the public as a popular seaside holiday resort and apart from a few years in the Second World War – when it was requisitioned by the War ffice it continued to entertain and charm visitors,

with its peaceful secluded coastal surroundings, until the end of the century. All of the bungalows, apartments and houses have been designed to make the most of this illustrious history and embrace the glorious ocean vista. The Courtyard makes for the perfect base from which to explore the stunning Cornish coast. The horseshoe-shaped Carlyon Bay, protected by the twin headlands at Trenarren and enabilly, this is the heart of Daphne Du Maurier country. acqueline Fleming spent her formative years holidaying with her parents at Polzeath in Cornwall, and now follows in that family tradition with her own children. By her own admission she has a very strong attachment to the place and consequently there are strands of this emotional thread that are visible through her choice of fabrics and colours that form the basis for Estuary Textiles. From a small shop situated in Wadebridge where, as she says, “I have a wide range of customers visiting the shop. From young people just learning to sew, fashion and textile students at local colleges, to keen stitchers and professional makers and artists. What is so wonderful is that the textiles I sell fit perfectly into both coastal and country homes.” The perfect melding of the sea and land that finds form in the cloth. Stocking everything from antique handmade quilts to French linen sheets and traditional Welsh blankets, Jacqueline’s passion and eye for the unusual is evident. Bright colours jump out at you from fabric imagined and conceived by post-war women designers who came to prominence during the Festival of Britain in 1951 as well as artists commissioned to help bring the 1960s to life through fabric design. Each promise to make an exciting addition to your home today. What’s more, Jacqueline will cut any material to the size you need for your project: “I have a colleague in Padstow

who makes items for customers if they don’t have the time or skills to create something themselves.” To give you more of an idea of what you can expect to find, we asked her about the obvious global influences that permeate the shop: “We have made lampshades from Kuba cloth from the Congo. Woven from raffia, dyed with pigments from mud and decoratively stitched with cowries, these lampshades add wonderful texture to a home. There is a range of cushions made with traditionally woven Kutnu silk from Turkey, edged in pleated fabric from the Hill Tribes of Northern Vietnam. Closer to home are 19th Century French nightshirts, canvas smocks from 1970s Penzance and fisherman’s guernseys knitted a generation ago which still have another generation’s worth of life in them.” In this small shop, that pays homage to some of the world’s most beautiful textiles, you are bound to find something to suit your taste and budget.

S

o, what is pre-wiring? Simply put, it means prioritising the wiring requirements for your home during the planning exercise so that they are not visible once the building process is complete. The end result – you have all the convenience of distributing internet, tv and audio, and controlling your lighting, shades, heating and security, without affecting your flawless interiors. There are also less obvious benefits that result from this approach. Firstly, although WiFi’s pretty common place these days, nothing is more reliable than wires connected to wires. Directly connected cables offer you a much more effective experience, minimizing the potential of interrupted service. What’s more, wired connections simply allow for faster delivery of information that wireless technologies cannot compete with. By opting for wired connections from the outset, you’re saving yourself the pain of dealing with inevitable wireless breakdown. Secondly, it’s much better to think about the cost upfront in a little preplanning, rather than incur the expense of retro-fitting cables into your newly renovated home. Prewiring not only offers

sheer simplicity down the line, it’s far less disruptive from an interior design perspective – you don’t have to go to the extent of cutting holes in walls, and then redecorating. Factoring in prewiring for a future project means the cost of integration at a later date will be significantly less if the cable’s already in place. Thirdly, as long as you have the right cable framework in place, you’ll always be able to integrate upgrades as technology evolves. It’s best to have a flexible, robust system so you can ensure your home works for today’s, and tomorrow’s technology. o how do you go about it The first step is to get the Electric Playground involved from the beginning to draw up a plan that will ensure you’ve got all the possible locations for devices mapped out in advance. You’ll then have a comprehensive cable framework to support your prewiring project and any future upgrades.

If you are looking to take your outdoor living space to the next level, look no further.

A ABOVE Luxury outdoor living brand, Sub-Zero is just one of the excellent brands on offer RIGHT Alfa pizza ovens and Vlaze units add a touch of class to any outdoor space

s we continue to navigate the uncertainties of the pandemic, there is a constant that we hold dear, and that’s the great outdoors – and in particular our own outdoor space. Each environment is different, something that the experts at Heart, Smoke and Soal appreciate. With this in mind, they offer a fully bespoke, design-led process to help customers realise the potential of their outdoor space. Owners Zowie and Gareth Rees, have a background in plumbing and heating and a passion for outdoor living and cooking, meaning they are excellently placed when it comes to advising on your dream project. We ask Zowie about how the process works: “Clients will make contact with us and we are delighted to have a no-obligation chat to talk through initial thoughts and ideas.” “The first step to designing the outdoor kitchen of your dreams is to define what you need from your space. The advantage of our custom service is that we can make sure you have everything you need to cook, live and entertain outdoors in style. Even if you don’t have a large space, we can still offer designs that are both elegant and practical.” The next step is to book a visit to the fullystocked showroom, where clients can view a range of products, materials and design ideas in situ. This is a time for one-to-one questions and answers and gives Zowie and her team the opportunity to discover the client’s wants and needs, while at the same time being able to talk through their brands, build options and time scales. “Following a showroom consultation,” adds Zowie, “we recommend a property visit that allows our designer to get a feel for the space and how the area is likely to be used. Having these conversations really is key to understanding our clients. From here, it’s to the drawing board we go, where we will spec the design and create a visual.” nce finalised, the project is booked and the Heart Smoke and Soal team take it from there. From sourcing all of the materials and products, prepping the ground

and completing the installation, all the client need do is to await completion and handover, when their al fresco experience will be ignited.

For the highest-quality British-made furniture, Three Rivers have just the thing.

T

his is the time of year where many of us are taking a pause after the fun and frivolity of the festive season to consider what we want from 2022, and how we can best prepare for the year ahead. With a fresh year comes fresh inspiration for our home interiors, and if you own a holiday home or let in Cornwall you may be one of many looking to spruce it up for 2022, with Cornish staycations set to make a firm come back next year. Owned and run by Matthew Hurst, his wife Alison and their son Jono, Three Rivers Furniture is a local, family-run business with customer care and unbeatable quality at the heart of everything they do. With a wide range of semi-bespoke furniture, from beds, tables and chairs to bookcases and display cabinets, there’s something for every interior and taste. What’s more, the team offer free delivery and installation, and they’ll even take the old furniture and any packaging away for you. For anything that won’t fit through the door or up the stairs, there’s no need to worry as the team will even dismantle and reassemble the piece for you, so all you need to do it pick the right spot! Specialising in quality, British-made furniture and mattresses, Three Rivers Furniture are at the top of their game when it comes to quality and customer service, and their online customer reviews are a

wonderful reflection of their hard work: “We really can’t speak highly enough of the service we’ve received from Matthew,” says G Marks. “There really is no need to shop around. The quality and price are second to none only surpassed by the customer care. If that’s not enough the delivery service is extremely prompt and efficient. We’ve purchased on numerous occasions and will always make this our first port of call when looking for furniture.” “Furniture is something that needs to be seen and touched to truly appreciate the quality and craftmanship,” explains atthew, with a firm belief that face to face interactions with his clients is really the best way to determine their individual needs. “Mattresses especially need to be seen and tried before purchase. Every person is different and no matter how descriptive an online product may be, you will never get a true representation unless you try it out.” o why not pay a visit to their expansive showroom? A modern MAGIC

Take back control of your energy costs with Cornish Cooker Conversions.

N

othing says Cornish home more than a traditional AGA or Rayburn, the beating heart of the house. However, while your ‘old reliable’ keeps your rooms warm and your meals hot, it may not be the most sustainable way to run your kitchen, and when things go wrong, you may not be able to put them right. That’s where Cornish Cooker Conversions come in. By designing conversion kits for your range to be converted to electric from fuels like oil, gas and solid fuels, you can make your range more efficient and environmentally friendly thanks to independent hob and oven control. Bringing rustic character and charm to any kitchen, the team at Cornish Cooker Conversions have developed a way to give your stove a new lease of life, so you don’t have to part with it in favour of a more modern oven. With their ElectricKit AGA and Energiser Rayburn conversion kits, it’s never been easier to convert to electric, giving you the flexibility and convenience of controlling the operation of your hobs and oven separately. The process can be completed in as little as a day, with minimal disruption to your kitchen and home. Alan Jackson, Co-director of Cornish Cooker Conversions, has worked in the engineering world for over 45 years, and is well known for his design work and implementation of the ElectricKit Aga conversion, which was

A quick and easy fix

RIGHT A new kitchen convenience

taken on and manufactured by Oilwarm Ltd in Collumpton. Following the success of the AGA ElectricKit, Alan has since worked on the Energiser Kit to convert Rayburns to electric, which means more flexibility with both cooking and warmth, and a move away from the increasing problem of fossil fuels. This innovative conversion kit is proving every bit as successful as the ElectricKit conversion and has been designed to fit the majority of Rayburn models. For more information on these services feel free to call the experienced Cornish Cooker Conversions team, or visit their website. For both AGAs and Rayburns, the conversions offer a new lease of life without having to disturb the kitchen, ensuring they’ll run efficiently in the modern day with a greener fuel alternative. The energy-saving benefits speak for themselves, and by moving away from a dependency on fossil fuels into a more sustainable and environmentally friendly functionality, you could see a real drop in your monthly costs, a bonus which I’m sure we could all welcome! The team at Cornish Cooker Conversions are finding that they are often contacted by owners of Rayburns that have either had major mechanical breakdowns or fuel issues that unfortunately cannot be resolved. In many cases, the issues leave Rayburns being uneconomical to repair, especially because the parts are difficult often impossible to

source. Whichever AGA or Rayburn model you use to heat your home, explains lan, “by converting to electric, we give your cooker a new lease of life, making it more economical and environmentally friendly”. Indeed, conversion is by far preferable to scrapping your stove, which comes with the added angst of disruption to your kitchen and the unwelcome cost of a new cooker. Converting your cooker is straightforward and fast, only taking a day to complete in situ, with minimal disruption to your kitchen. Once complete, there are so many new options in the operation of your AGA or Rayburn! You can time the oven to come on when you need it to, and even switch it on and off remotely using an App, a fantastic feature if you’re on your way home and you want it primed and ready for your return. As you are now only switching on and using energy to cook when you need it to, you’ll no longer be paying unnecessarily for the oven to be on while you’re asleep, at work or away from home it’s all under control!

ow that we are in the thick of the winter months you may have thought about the way you heat your home. The thought of cosying up in front of the fire at this time of year can be irresistible, but with so many products available it can be difficult to know where to start. The team at Eden Hearth & Home can help you with all your heating needs this winter. In preparation for the new year the team have introduced a whole range of new and exciting heating products to their portfolio, and are on hand to offer all the support and advice you need to make the right choice. Tracy Johnson, Owner of Eden Hearth & Home, talks to us about the changes she’s seen when it comes to home heating: “We’ve seen a huge shift in the way our customers shop for heating products this year. People today seem to be taking on board energy efficiencies and sustainability of the products they buy, and the electric heating market has really taken off, with four out of five customers choosing electric for either whole house heating or for the cosy fire in the

living room. Advancements in technology have drastically improved the look and feel of electric fires today, plus most fires now come with LED lights that have a very long lifespan, so no need to worry about large electricity bills and changing bulbs.” If you are thinking of upgrading your tired overnight storage heaters for energy efficient slimline electric radiators, then Eden offer a superb range of electric heating solutions with their Electrorad heating range, and what’s more they can supply and install the latest hang on the wall heating systems that carry up to a 30-year guarantee. The radiators have central thermal cores and come in many sizes to suit all rooms sizes. Eden offer a fully comprehensive installation service to its customers and are happy to carry out a survey to check electrics and supply you with a full written quote, what could be simpler? In the new year, Eden will be transforming their showroom with a brand-new range of fireplaces. “We felt it was time to refresh our showroom and introduce a whole new range of fireplace designs,” explains Tracy.

Commercial Waste

REMOVAL IN

CORNWALL

New legislation dictates that holiday home waste is no longer classed as Domestic… it is now in fact commercial Therefore, holiday home owners are not permitted to use the residential council collection service, this can be expensive, contractually binding, and rigid. Cornwall council currently recommends a National based company but why not use a local company instead? BINS AWAY offer you a flexible, bespoke service at a competitive price. If you don’t have bookings on certain weeks, it’s no problem! just inform us and you only pay for what we take away. Alternatively, should you require more frequent collections, we can also provide additional support. Life is now changeable, so why shouldn’t the businesses you use be the same. We offer a prompt, professional service with a choice of flexible contracts. We are happy to provide weekly, one off, ad-hoc, high season or all year-round collections. Bins Away can adapt to your requirements. We are friendly, approachable and conscientious from collection to disposal. Also, by being local we have established links to a network of effective recycling companies, such as Cornwall Cullet, who have a zero waste to landfill policy. Bins Away are fully licensed in everything we do.

LIFESTYLE

journey

A LIFE-CHANGING Born out of necessity, EthicaCBD is providing a natural path to a better life.

F

BELOW Pure quality CBD for better living

ollowing on from struggles with both anxiety and insomnia, the son of one of the founders of this Cornish brand introduced the benefits of Cannabidiol (CBD) to the rest of the family. The resulting benefits could not be ignored, with improvements in state-of-mind and general quality of life. From initial trials using a variety of CBD products, they decided to share their discovery with friends around their hometown of Bude. Fortuitously, at the same time two friends were also on a CBD journey. They had discovered that Cannabidiol was instrumental in dampening down the inflammation caused by the disease nkylosing pondylitis. However, finding a trustworthy brand that met levels of acceptability in terms of purity and transparency was proving problematic. Becoming aware of each other’s interest in CBD they found themselves driven to create a range of products which could provide the therapeutic benefits they had witnessed firsthand, but built on robust ethical standards. Essentially, they wanted to share with everyone the opportunity to improve quality of life with the very best plant-based care… EthicaCBD was it!

For many, there is still a mystique surrounding CBD. In fact, it is just one of the one of many naturally occurring compounds found within the hemp plant, referred to as cannabinoids. Over the last century we have discovered how to isolate cannabinoids, therefore enabling research into their specific properties and applications. It has demonstrated extensive therapeutic value when tested as a remedy for ailments, such as epilepsy, anxiety, insomnia, inflammation and pain. Most importantly, it is completely legal and does not produce the side effects commonly associated with smoking cannabis. It is widely accepted that certain benefits can be attributed to CBD’s interaction with an integral biological infrastructure known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS regulates and maintains stability within the body and aids in returning your internal environment to a state of equilibrium known as homeostasis. The previously mentioned health problems are symptomatic of a lack of homeostasis. So, this year, in-line with whatever changes you may be making to your lifestyle, why not add this natural supplement to your routine?

BELOW Curio's signature Wild Coast Gin, (formerly Rock Samphire Gin)

stablished in 2014, Curio Spirits has been leading the way when it comes to the UK’s resurgence of craft gins and rums. Established and trusted creators of high-quality spirits, William one of the co-founders of Curio Spirits said, “We’re really excited about being in Porthleven, there’s such a great buzz with so many other local entrepreneurs. We’ve had a very warm welcome and are looking forward to 2022.” Locals and visitors alike can now not only experience Curio and their unmistakable spirits of gin, vodka and rum, but can also take part in exciting gin and rum tasting events and cocktail making classes, all aimed at those curious creatives who enjoy something a little different. With new premises and a year of growth planned for 2022, Curio is delighted to welcome two new team members, Milo Howes as Distillery Assistant and Beth Foote as Marketing and PR Assistant who will both play a key part in promoting the Curio brand.

RIGHT Rubina and William with new team members Milo Howes and Beth Foote

As a team, it’s clear that the Curio clan love what they do. They are passionate about the product and always strive to provide the best service to their customers. The company ethos is one where provenance, creativity and innovation is at the fore. An example of which is William’s latest creation of Hard Seltzers that are already proving to be a huge success. Curio Rhubarb and Ginger and Peach and Rose Hard Seltzers both won gold in this year’s Taste of the West awards. Local ingredients are used wherever and whenever possible, including botanicals from the Cornish clifftops and herbs hand-picked and grown in the Curio garden. They also only use pure natural spring water from the Cornish Spring Water Company for distillations, so you can rest assured that your favourite tipple is as pure as they come. Curio Spirits come with an exceptional pedigree, being recognised with awards both regionally, nationally and internationally. Watch this space, there are more innovations planned for next year!

et’s get the easy one out of the way first. It comes round every year and always brings that inevitable sigh and verbal response. Those tax returns emember the deadline for submissions is 1st January 0 . Next on the list comes Income plitting. For married and civil partners this means maximising your tax savings by structuring your affairs to ensure that you both use your personal allowances and basic rate tax bands where applicable being 1 , 70 and 0, 70 respectively. itting alongside this consideration is whether you have used your basic-rate band and K dividend allowances The cash does not need to be paid out of a limited company the company just needs to have available reserves. Now onto pensions always worthy of a review even though that day of putting up your feet up and sitting back may be a distant reality. Check whether you have utilised your annual allowance in the year, and whether you should seek to make use of any unused annual allowances from the previous three years. Pensions are incredibly useful for inheritance tax planning purposes too. For those intending to pass on your pensions savings check you can achieve your intention with a pension provider, and if so, check you have adequately completed a nomination form, and seek advice as to whether a trust should be used to achieve those objectives.

With corporation tax rates currently at 19 , and only increasing to between 19 from pril 0 , the potential advantages of holding income-producing assets in a limited company, rather than as an individual, are significant in the relevant circumstances. With your changing circumstances it is worth taking a look at your current exposure to inheritance tax and review whether any lifetime planning should be undertaken. ore and more estates are becoming exposed to inheritance tax which leads to that old chestnut the Will. esearch carried out by the Just roup shows that more than one in 10 over 7 s 1 per cent equating to nearly 700,000 people have not made one. BE KIND

to you A

"

With such busy lives, … we have lost the art of spending time with ourselves and listening to and responding to our own needs.

"

Take some time out with Clinical Psychologist at the Duchy Hospital, Dr Opie-Moran, to focus on mental health & wellbeing.

fter the busy Christmas period, when January comes around again, New Year for some is an opportunity to create some resolutions, or focus on achievements and plans for the upcoming year. However, for some it can be a lonely time, when friends and family have returned to their day to day lives and rather than feeling excitement for the year to come, it can feel scary and overwhelming. Especially in the midst of a global pandemic, being kind to ourselves now is more important than ever. We’ve been speaking with Dr Opie-Moran, Duchy’s Clinical Psychologist to gather some insights into looking after ourselves. Here’s what she said, “With such busy lives, and our phones at hand to distract us every available minute, we have lost the art of spending time with ourselves and listening to and responding to our own needs. Getting some routines, to help us regularly sit quietly with ourselves, gives us an opportunity to get to know and enjoy ourselves more, and to become aware of problems as they emerge rather than when they become overwhelming. If we are not comfortable sitting in silence with our own thoughts this really is a prompt to seek some external help.”

One of the most important aspects of  ABOVE The importance of looking after your mental health is to taking time out of recognise when your mood or outlook your busy schedule changes. There are lots of early signs that can and reconnecting be worth taking note of, such as constantly cannot be emphasised worrying, losing interest in your hobbies and enough things you enjoy, trouble sleeping or feeling irritable. Embark upon a mood diary to keep a record of these changes. Being kind to yourself and remembering to focus on your own mental health and wellbeing can be difficult, but even the smallest actions can help. You could start your day with a self-affirmation, something positive to tell yourself as soon as you wake up. It’s important to remember that you are good enough, you are worth it. You should give yourself credit for how far you have come and focus on even the smallest achievements. Remember, be kind to yourself this year, and don’t forget to take time for you!
