Welcome

From the Editor to the June edition of Cornwall Living!

Member of:

As our thoughts turn to summer, now is the perfect time to plan your next escape to the Duchy. Imagine escaping for a weekend break where the beds are sink-into, the food is exemplary and the views are endless. Or, perhaps you are planning to mark a special occasion with family and friends and are looking for that added touch of luxury so you can spoil yourselves. This issue, I've been looking at some of our favourite luxury stays (from page 23). From a chic urban retreat to hotels with enviable positions high up on the cliffs, these stays invite endless opportunities for indulgence in every sense.

While you're here, we highly recommend you explore some of Cornwall's delicious foodie haunts where you can sample seasonal local produce and top Cornish tipples. From page 67, discover some of our favourites.

If you live in Cornwall, then there's no reason that you can't create your own little piece of paradise in which to relax. This issue, we are delighted to introduce Bryluen (page 41), a company that preserves freshly cut flowers in the same state of beauty in which they are picked. Lasting for years, these stunning blooms elevate the style of any home. Or, why not consider adding a hot tub to your garden for the ultimate chill-out zone? Kernow Springs (page 81) can provide everything you need to create your own wild-spa experience.

Adding a special piece of art to your home is also a great way to bring your interiors to life. Our art section (from page 58) showcases the talent of some of Cornwall's leading makers and creatives. Many of their works are inspired by the ocean and the Duchy's natural landscape so also have the added benefit of bringing the outdoors in.

...happy reading!

Practicality in its finest form

Specialising in crafting bespoke balustrades for clients throughout the south west, Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems is a well-established family-run business here in the heart of the Duchy. From industrial applications of galvanised modular tube to the bespoke development of full stainlesssteel systems for the home, both of which include a full complementary component range, the team have found themselves the firm favourite for many throughout Cornwall.

Their latest residential project needed a lowimpact surround, in keeping with the charm and age of the property. Using point-fixed glass without a handrail, it provided a suitable addition to the property being both practical and unobtrusive. As with all of their commissions, style, visual impact and safety was prioritised and covered in an initial consultation with Bruce and James, to make sure the customer got the outcome they were looking for.

Liquorice the seal pup returns to the wild

Liquorice, a rare grey seal pup rescued from Cornwall’s coastline, has returned to the wild after a successful rehabilitation at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Completely black from head to toe, Liquorice is ‘melanistic’. The condition happens when too much melanin is produced in the skin – something seen in just one in 400 grey seals. She first came to the Sanctuary back in January, underweight and with breathing difficulties, after being spotted by local walkers who called the Cornish Seal Sanctuary for help. Now, however, she has made a successful return to the sea after receiving expert care from the Sanctuary’s animal care team.

Tamara Cooper, the Sanctuary’s curator, says: “While it’s sad to see Liquorice go, we know the wild is the best place for her and we’re sure she will now thrive in the place where she is supposed to be.”

The perfect Cornish keepsake

Each year, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary sees an estimated 70 pups come through the doors from September to March, with care for each pup costing an average of £2,000 to £3,000. To find out more about their mission, head to the website at sealsanctuary.sealifetrust.org. For more information call 01326 221361 or email seals@sealifetrust.com

Justin Duance casts precious metals in beach sand to form beautiful organic jewellery. The sand not only creates a unique texture, but little grains are captured in the metal so you can carry a piece of your favourite place with you wherever you go. The team can even melt down and reform old jewellery to give it a new lease of life. Will you sponsor a Cornwall Hospice Care nurse?

Many of us will have experienced the loss of a loved one, and for those in need of care when that time comes, comfort can be taken in the knowledge that they’re being well looked after. With your support, Cornwall Hospice Care nurses provide peace, comfort, and calm when someone is nearing the end of their life, seven days a week, 365 days a year, in both their hospices and out in the Cornish community. While the hospice care is 100% free, the team can only reach all those who need them thanks to the incredible people who choose to support the hospice charity with a regular gift. You can sponsor a nurse for as little as £1 a month, or any amount you choose, so they can plan for the future with confidence.

“Our role as hospice nurses is to be there for our patients and their loved ones when they’re at their most vulnerable,” says Claire, a Staff Nurse at St Julia’s Hospice. “We guide them through the difficult times,

as they come to terms with an end of life diagnosis and we make sure every day matters. Thank you for supporting me and my fellow nurses. Sponsor us today at www. cornwallhospicecare.co.uk/sponsoranurse.”

The Museum of Cornish Life’s latest

When the Museum of Cornish Life first opened its doors in 1949, the local newspaper headline read ‘Farmers will like it.’ Now, 70 years later, the museum is launching an exciting new project to better reflect Cornish farming from the 1970s up to today. Conducting collections research, undertaking innovative conservation and updates in the museum’s displays are all on the cards.

As the project moves forward, the team will be carrying out most of the work in public, so visitors can speak to them while they make inventories, undertake preventive conservation and think about new interpretation.

This is all being made possible thanks to an award of £78,000 from the Museums Association Esmée Fairbairn Collection Fund. To explore the new farming display and the rest of the museum, make sure to pay it a visit from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, completely free of charge.

Forever Cornwall expands its reach

The award-winning independent cottage letting agency, Forever Cornwall, has expanded into Bude and Widemouth Bay, adding sixteen new Cornish retreats to its flourishing portfolio. Ranging from large and elegant town villas that are suitable for multi-family or multi-generational holidays, to contemporary surf-style cottages right by the beach, each home is perfectly placed to make the most of this beautiful stretch of Cornwall’s north coast.

Being the most easterly destination on Cornwall’s surf coast makes Bude an everpopular family choice. Choose from several wide, golden beaches all within strolling distance of the centre of the small town. The wonderful sea pool on Summerleaze beach is perfect for calm, salty swims when the tide’s out, and one of Cornwall’s largest nature reserves packed with wildlife and migrating birds can be found on the fringes of the town. Nearby Widemouth Bay is surf central and popular with families and surfers alike, just three miles from the centre of Bude.

Head slightly inland and discover art galleries and independent shops, a cycle path along the canal and a fascinating 18th-century castle — not to mention the South West Coast Path. Bude is also home to some brilliant places to eat, from popular seafood restaurants to cosy pubs and cafés on the coast. Enjoy all of this and more when staying at one of Forever Cornwall’s coastal properties.

Looking back with Mustard Financial

With the warmer months fast approaching, Peter Nightingale, founder of Mustard Financial, looks back to the summer of 2015: “A weekly visit to Cornwall had become a regular occurrence with my wife. She was pregnant at the time and was due in a few months. As with every visit to Cornwall, we discussed the dream of living here and how happy we would be. Whilst we were chatting, we noticed the local primary school having a lesson on the beach, the children laughing and playing on the sand. We knew that we were moving down in that instant, and I quickly got to work on the numbers, timings and everything that I usually help clients with. Before long, we were finally here, ready to live the rest of our lives. “The pandemic resulted in many clients realising the same dream, and this is something that we have worked tirelessly to achieve for many clients.”

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up with mortgage repayments. For more information call on 03301330826 or email info@mustardfinancial.co.uk

Another popular brand at Slickers Doghouse

After little success of finding a dog coat that would tick all the boxes, Stix founders Jo Murray and Desi Heptinstall saw an opportunity to create their own range of high-quality water-resistant dog coats that would be functional and user-friendly, while also being stylish.

Stix coats are made from Polartec fleece, which is warm, water resistant and breathable – perfect for Cornwall’s sometimes unpredictable weather! They have a signature zip for ease of putting on – follow legs, neck, zip and your dog will be cosy and warm in minutes. Taking off is simply the reverse and as they are machine washable and fast-drying, your dog’s Stix coat will be clean and ready in no time for your next canine adventure.

Made from 90% recycled bottles, and using only recycled and recyclable materials to package its products, the Polartec fleece might just be one of the most environmentally friendly dog coats

on the market. Covering more than 25 different breeds, with a range of sizes for each – whether you have a greyhound or a golden retriever, a pug or a pointer – your four-legged friend will be ready for walkies, whatever the weather. Taking luxury retreats to new heights, we discover some of Cornwall’s finest havens that deliver indulgence on every level.

COVER FEATURE CORNWALL LIVING | 23
Words by Hannah Tapping

Did you know that you don’t have to spend the time and money to travel to far-flung retreats in order to experience holiday splendour? Here in Cornwall, there’s a wide selection of luxury stays, all with the incredible backdrop of the Duchy’s beautiful landscape. If you’re travelling from out of county, then Cornwall is a little over five hours from London by car. With the last remaining section of single carriageway on the A30 due to be upgraded later this year, driving to your holiday home is a great way to travel. If you prefer to fly, then there are regular domestic flights from the ideally situated Cornwall Airport Newquay, or choose from are regular train services from across the UK.

With travel sorted, where should you choose to rest your head? Whether it be for a much-needed weekend escape or a longer stay, Cornwall’s luxury hotels and resorts offer the warmest of welcomes and an opportunity to relax in tranquil surroundings. From coastal comfort to city chic, we have selected just a few of our favourites to tempt you.

If you are looking for a coastal-chic base then the Padstow Harbour Hotel will fit the bill. This gem of a hotel has the most incredible views over the Camel Estuary, super-comfy beds, friendly service and serves delicious Cornish food. The hotel is perched in an elevated position above the town, providing a unique wraparound outlook over the harbour.

And what to do while you’re there? Well, no visit to Padstow would be complete without a walk or cycle on the famous Camel Trail. Padstow Harbour Hotel likes to make things easy for their guests, so no surprise that the trail starts a few minutes’ walk away, nor that the hotel will lend you bikes, maps and even pack you a luxury picnic in a backpack to eat en-route. Many guests opt to hike the rugged clifftop paths of the nearby South West Coast Path, or join a sea safari with Padstow Sealife Safaris, to glimpse nesting puffins, seals, dolphins, and even basking sharks. Also, don’t miss the National Lobster Hatchery, which provides visitors a fascinating insight into the hard work required to keep up a sustainable lobster population in Cornwall. Moving from the north to south coast, you’ll discover the Talland Bay Hotel. Set in the most peaceful pocket of Cornwall, it’s reached via winding country lanes and reveals the most spectacular views. This is a hotel that feels like a home-fromhome, with friendly and welcoming staff. Walking into Talland Bay Hotel is like stepping into Alice in Wonderland. The design and décor throughout the hotel is striking. Each room is individually designed and all offer a calming retreat after a day’s exploration. We recommend a stroll down the lane to Talland Bay beach where you can while away many a happy hour soaking up the sun or watching the waves lap the shore.

The Padstow Harbour Hotel is the ideal base for exploring this pretty harbour town

friendly service and serves delicious Cornish wraparound outlook over the harbour.

The lavender-fringed lawn is a truly blissful spot to enjoy a cream tea or local ale while watching the fishing trawlers return from their daily boat trips.  The décor is nothing short of impressive; from the entrance with its gigantic neon 'What Shall We Do With a Drunken Sailor' sign, to the inverted skiff moored to the ceiling in the lounge.

Or, walk the South West Coast Path to Polperro, where you can meander through the streets of the traditional Cornish fishing port. Returning to the hotel, pre-dinner drinks on the terrace or lush green lawns is such a special experience as you soak up the uninterrupted view out across the sea. The food is exceptional here. Each dish is carefully considered and has a little extra flavour kick, whether that’s curry oil with the fish or a crunchy quinoa and sesame cracker with the salad. The hotel has recently launched a nine-course dining experience, too, taking you on a culinary journey through the best local seasonal produce.

Further south, St Michaels Resort is unique in that it offers both luxury hotel and self-catering accommodation. Choose from one of the delightful rooms or suites and you’ll experience a hotel stay that you’ll want to repeat year after year. The hotel is home to the largest hydrotherapy pool in Cornwall and new for 2023 are four Spa Garden Lodges. With private terraces, outdoor bath tubs and packages with unlimited Hydrothermal Experience access, this is the ultimate way to relax and unwind in coastal surroundings.

For the ultimate in versatility, the hotel’s Beach Residences offer the best of both worlds. With elegant coastal styling these are perfect for families or group stays providing deluxe spaces in which to enjoy the ultimate in beachside relaxation. While each has a well-appointed open kitchen, there is always the opportunity to stroll across the hotel’s garden and experience either the Brasserie on the Bay or the more informal Garden Kitchen. Whichever dining experience you choose, both menus offer fresh, seasonal dishes made with ingredients chosen from Cornwall’s abundant local larder.

A stay here is one of south coast elegance with an ocean backdrop. For exploration, Gylly beach is just a stone’s throw away while the South West Coast Path extends in both directions just a few steps from the bottom of the hotel’s garden. The maritime town of Falmouth makes for a wonderful way to while away a day or for seafarers, its world-class sailing waters await.

without having to sacrifice quality and comfort. Each yurt has underfloor heating, and vast sink-into beds draped with luxury linens invite deep slumber.

The village itself is magical. Birdsong greets early morning risers in utterly peaceful surroundings. The addition of an outdoor hot tub means guests can experience gentle restorative warmth while breathing deeply of fresh, coastal air.

The coast is but a few minutes’ walk away and with a location between Newquay and Padstow, The Park Cornwall has endless opportunities for adventure; whether that be al fresco, ocean or culinary.

From the ultimate in coastal comfort we move to an uber-cool, urban bolthole. The Penventon Park Hotel is a place where guests can expect to escape the ordinary. This hotel, which can be found in Redruth at the heart of one of Cornwall’s historic mining towns, affords splendid Georgian architecture and glittering interiors. Lavish chandeliers hang from high atrium ceilings; gilded paintings, plush velvets, silks and satins invoke Italian grandeur.

Sophistication can be found at every turn. The dining experience is nothing short of theatrical while the Copper Bar offers an elegant start or end to the evening. The bedrooms, as one would expect in a Georgian mansion, are fit for lords and ladies. Each room is a luxury escape in itself – think opulent antique furniture, four poster beds and luxurious touches at every turn. This is the ideal base for exploring Cornwall’s industrial heritage, discovering ancient engine houses and mineral tramways that wind through countryside decorated with granite outcrops and swathes of gorse and heather.

Whichever luxury stay you choose, these inspiring boltholes are waiting to offer you a welcome like no other. Book your next escape to Cornwall and discover retreats that you will want to return to again and again.

In need of a kitchen switch up? Kitchen Kit is on hand with some helpful tips to get organised this summer.

ABOVE é

Making the most of your drawers

The kitchen is a room that sees family meal times, breakfasts before school, and home-cooked dinner nights amongst friends and family. The last thing you want to be doing amongst the chaos is to be searching aimlessly for the dried basil that ran out a week ago, or the mixing jug that never gets put back in the right cupboard. Investing time in designing and creating the perfect kitchen that works for you, with essential kitchen storage solutions, is a game changer. Your kitchen should suit you and your family's needs, with every cupboard and every drawer arranged exactly how you like it. Here are just a few ideas that could really help in

getting you started on your way to a perfectly organised kitchen.

Pull-out organisation

Drawers are a staple in almost any kitchen, but are they being utilised? By integrating a planning grid within your drawers you can personalise your cutlery, pots, pans, baking trays, herbs and spices, to name just a few. Nobilia has a variety of specialised planning grids that we know will upgrade your kitchen tenfold, but why stop there? Why not consider pull-out larders and pantry drawers? Alternatively, slim drawers for cooking sauces, or drawers within drawers are both

HOME 34 | CORNWALL LIVING

amazing kitchen storage solutions. The pantry cupboard is another handy design, where a sealed drawer can be pulled out to store fruit, vegetables and bread. This will keep your worktops clean, clear and minimalist, whilst also freeing up valuable space in the fridge. In a modern, utopian twist, Ballerina Kitchens is also encouraging the use of drawers to store homegrown herbs. As kitchen storage solutions go, this finally rockets us forward into the 21st century – a chance to grow your own herb garden in the comfort of your own kitchen, readily available to tend to whenever you are cooking up a storm in the evenings, or making your morning coffee.

Stationary cupboard organisation

You needn't have fancy pull-out drawers to keep your kitchen storage solutions in tip-top shape. Investing in some floor-toceiling cupboards with smart, in-built storage solutions may be all you need. A kitchen storage solution idea that will help with those shelves that seem to be overflowing with unused oils, sauces and spices, is the tiered shelf. This modern-day hack allows you to arrange those pesky cupboard condiments in a way that sorts them from high to low,

giving you full view over each one. Another particularly useful kitchen storage solution is the unit for drinks case by Nobilia Kitchens. Instead of filling up your fridge and any spare cupboard you have with drinks bottles, store them in this floor-to-ceiling crate holder until you are ready for them to be chilled. This can also be used for longlife milk, squash, wine, beer, spirits, cordials and cartons of juice.

Fridge organisation

From in-built kitchen storage solutions to the Mrs Hinch method of arranging your pasta, rice, lentils, beans and peas into individual, easy-to-use jars, Kitchen Kit's cupboards can be the ultimate display of organisation. But your storage solutions needn’t be restricted to the kitchen cupboards. The family fridge can be a haven for tasty treats and resplendent refreshment, when it hasn’t turned into a disorganised dungeon! So, why not adopt some of these kitchen storage solutions in the chilled section of your home, and arrange your fridge shelves with as much care and attention as you would your cupboards?

With a wealth of helpful advice on hand, the Kitchen Kit team truly are kitchen connoisseurs, so why not get in touch if you’re in need of a little guidance when it comes to the heart of your home? Home to a range of reputable brands and with years of experience under their belt, your dream kitchen is within reach with Kitchen Kit.

Could air-source heat pumps be the heating solution we've all been waiting for?

With temperatures rising and falling throughout the year (sometimes rather unpredictably), many of us are looking at ways in which we can maintain comfortable heat levels at home, whilst keeping the energy bills in check and the impact on the planet in mind.

An air-source heat pump ticks over in the background of your home and keeps the temperature at a nice, ambient level, even on the coldest days of winter. This is better for the fabric of your home as temperatures won't peak and trough, improving overall efficiency so you can be cosy and comfortable all day long.

When you run an oil or gas boiler, it's usually in short blasts and then your home cools down when the boiler switches off. In contrast, a heat pump runs at lower temperatures more consistently to maintain a level of heat in your home. As such, a heat pump is an ideal replacement for a gas or oil boiler. Typically, a single air source unit will be installed on the outside of the home. This is then connected to a hot water tank internally and the existing central heating system. Some small upgrades may be required but overall, disruption to the home is minimal. Once installed, the heat pump provides all the property's heating and hot water.

In addition, to aid customers into switching from outdated fossil fuel boilers,

the government is offering a £5,000 grant to anybody making the switch known as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). Domestic heating is the largest carbon emitter in your home and switching to a heat pump will generate a carbon saving in a number of tonnes. The BUS scheme comes off of the amount you pay and is open to anybody converting from a fossil fuel system.

The limited BUS scheme runs until 2025 and works on a first-come-first-served-basis. Upgrading your heating system now before the winter season is the best way to protect against further anticipated energy hikes and to start benefiting right away.

COVERED We’ve got you

The outdoor living solutions' market has seen a boom in growth over recent years, with more of us looking to enhance our outdoor spaces. We spoke to Brian Johnston from All Weather Canopies for an expert’s insight: “With another beautiful Cornish summer about to begin, many homeowners are looking at ways to enhance their alfresco dining and entertaining experience. The pandemic really taught us the true value of our garden space and the addition of a veranda or canopy is proving the ideal solution for year-round enjoyment.”

With some of us still cautious about travelling abroad, and the cost-of-living crisis squeezing us all, this underlines the importance of being able to enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of our own home. Homeowners that have added a veranda to their patio area immediately secure themselves an extension of their useable living space, come rain or shine, as Brian explains: “We have seen a huge rise in enquiries over the last couple of years. Across Cornwall, families have recognised that the best investment they can make for their homes and their lifestyle is in their own gardens.”

As the south west distributor for the Milwood Group, the leading UK manufacturer of outdoor living systems, Brian speaks with authority on the matter: “We have partnered with Milwood for many years now; their

range of modular verandas, canopies and carports are extremely high-quality and very attractively designed. The versatile nature of their products provides an array of solutions to cater for any home.”

The collaboration between Milwood Group and All Weather Canopies ensures customer satisfaction, with a seamless experience from first point of contact through to completed installation. Brian and his team work closely with local installers across Cornwall to make sure that jobs go smoothly and a perfect outcome is achieved, every time. “Over the years, we have built some great relationships with installers,” continues Brian. “Our large selection of products offer a rich set of solutions to their customers, which benefits everybody.”

Milwood Group veranda and canopy systems are manufactured in the UK, allowing short lead times. With a number of upgrades available such as integrated LED lighting, and the fact that these systems are available in six standard, highly-durable powder-coat finishes, there is a wide variety of options to suit every taste.

FRESH FLOWERS forever!

Fresh flowers are magical; their vibrant colours, delicate petals, and enticing fragrances have the power to transform any space and lift our mood. As a child, Victoria Lawley-Gibbs visited her grandparents’ flower shop, walking among the tall ferns and exotic flowers, filling her senses with their vibrant colours and smells. “Over the years I always made sure we had a fresh bunch of flowers in our home, holiday home, or office, wherever we were in the world. Having fresh flowers in a living space really helps create a luxurious and comforting environment,” says Victoria.

“When my family first moved to Cornwall, we lived in a number of holiday cottages until we found a more permanent home in St Ives. Walking into these homes, I was so impressed by the attention to detail, every room beautifully decorated. However, something was missing… fresh flowers. There were a few pieces here and there, but they were plastic and began gathering dust after a day or so.”

Buying fresh flowers regularly is expensive, and inevitably they wilt and die. Synthetic or dried flowers don’t have the same texture, aroma, or magical appeal as living flowers and this is why Bryluen was conceived. Using a process carefully

developed over the last 30 years, Victoria preserves freshly cut flowers in exactly the same state as when harvested. Capturing a perfect moment in time, Bryluen flowers can be enjoyed out of season and for years to come – imagine a bouquet of white hydrangeas for your September wedding!

The magical process involves extracting the water from the plant cells and replacing this with a mixture of glycerine and natural colouring, which makes them indistinguishable from fresh flowers in both aroma and texture. Whether it’s to brighten up your kitchen island or a classic coffee table display, if your average bouquet lasts two weeks, these flowers will outlast them some 50 times over. Over a two year period those cost savings are considerable.

A Bryluen display is perfect for homes, hotels, restaurants, reception areas and holiday cottages – in fact, any space where an impressive bouquet of flowers really adds that luxury feel and lifts the spirits, whatever the season!

Spa garden

Having recently undergone a significant outdoor refurbishment working with local Cornish businesses, St Michaels is a stateof-the-art, spa-seeker’s sanctuary. While its Hydrothermal Experience has drawn fame in recent years, winning numerous awards and boasting the largest hydrotherapy pool in the south west, its new spa gardens are the latest addition to its calming crown.

Overlooking the gardens below and with views out to Falmouth Bay, the new-look spa garden includes a 12-seater hot tub, cold plunge pool, comfortable seating areas and of course, its famous outdoor barrel sauna. All of which are surrounded by local (and some quite exotic) flora and fauna, providing a natural backdrop to this new holistic haven.

There’s also an impressive repertoire of treatments on offer in the spa, including a partnership with local Cornish brand, Living Sea Therapy, whose products are made from kelp and sea salt and harvested from the

resort coastline to create nutrient-rich balms packed with natural vitamins, minerals and goodness for the skin.

The new spa garden comes as part of St Michaels’ two-hour Hydrothermal Experience, which can be booked in isolation, or included in its wide range of spa days. The ever-popular Twilight Spa Evening combines two hours in the spa with a twocourse dinner in the Brasserie on the Bay, showcasing local food that’s big in flavour and low in food miles; one not to miss. You can be one of the first to experience the new spa garden at St Michaels Resort, with the Hydrothermal Experience starting from £50pp. Advanced booking is essential, so make sure to head online to book your visit!

Discovering a new side of Cornwall with Karen Colam’s immersive tours and detailed local knowledge.

It’s perhaps no accident that the story of long-established tour company, Poldark’s Cornwall, and Owner and Founder Karen Colam, find themselves in this issue of Cornwall Living. Formerly the owner of the famous Rock-based boat company, Cornish Crabbers, Karen followed her move west to Perranporth in 2006 with a spot of research into the back story of Poldark and its true historic roots, a story that had captivated her during its first TV adaptation during the 70s and led to her moving to Cornwall in the 80s.

Now a highly successful and engaging businesswoman, Karen offers the most in-depth tours of the Duchy and wherever appropriate weaves in the history and locations of the Poldark saga to those who have fallen in love with it all over again. Her encyclopaedic knowledge of Cornwall, its history and heritage, coupled with her background in West End theatre make spending time with Karen entertaining as well as fact filled.

For the best all-round experience, guests stay at her award-winning boutique hotel, The Bolenna, where they can indulge in wonderful local food and soak up the repartee and welcoming atmosphere. An intimate dinner

and overnight stay at The Bolenna followed by a day of touring new and unfamiliar areas of Cornwall with Karen is a fabulous way to unlock more of the Duchy’s secrets.

Set in a wildflower meadow away from the hustle and bustle of the beach and seafront of Perranporth, The Bolenna is renowned for it's incredbile food offering. Locals do much to keep this hidden gem a secret, but the word is out there and the food, wines, cocktails and atmosphere is so special that first timers at The Bolenna quickly become regulars. It seems that Perranporth is hot on the heels of the Camel Estuary as a foodie destination, but what it also has is Poldark and someone who really knows her stuff! To book a table or room at The Bolenna, call 01872 572751 or email eat@ thebolenna.com, whilst Poldark’s Cornwall tour information can be found online, via email or over the phone on 07859 803737.

TO DETAIL Attention

Family-run, and with a wealth of experience and knowledge of the local area, Shore Stays are certainly pros when it comes to holiday letting, with a reputation for taking the best care of their properties and guests.

“The reliable care and attention we give to managing properties on the north coast of Cornwall is second-to-none because it really is a true passion of ours,” says Sara. “As a familyrun business, we offer years of experience and take a personal approach to caring for each property for total peace of mind.

“We appreciate the time and care that has gone into creating each beautiful property, and it’s our mission to protect it for the owners while sharing it with others who will appreciate it just as much as they do. Whether it’s for long periods of time or just a few weeks, owners just need to let us know the times of year they would like to share their property and we do the rest. We make regular visits to each house and cover full inspections at changeover as standard, fixing any issues ourselves before new visitors arrive, as we have a super maintenance team on call 24/7!”

Shore Stay’s top priority is to establish a great relationship with their owners so they can feel 100% confident that their home is being well cared for; from the finer details such as cleaning products and lightbulbs right through to re-decoration. “We’re proud to use local contractor Terry Harris & Sons, and our maintenance team all live locally, so are contactable 24 hours a day for both owners and guests alike,” adds Sara. Their property portfolio has a simple recurring theme; coastal locations that are close to the beach and offer a little slice of comfortable luxury. So, if you have a luxury property by the sea and are interested in letting your home with Shore Stays, why not get in touch with the team today – they would love to hear from you!

Capturing sand and sea

Cornwall-based artist Gemma Lessinger is mesmerised by the sea and her textured artworks reflect the wild, powerful and healing properties of time spent by the ocean. Her aim is to bring these beach memories to you in your home, while also being as sustainable as possible, focusing on re-purposing and up-cycling other people’s waste into her treasure.

Gemma can turn your beach memories into something you can not only see, but feel in your home. She does this using these two unique elements; sand and re-purposed materials. Sand is collected from the exact beach your memory is from, with each location giving different colours and size of grain, creating a completely bespoke look with each piece. Gemma also up-cycles other people’s waste to create another dimension of texture in her work, using off-cuts of

fibreglass from surfboard manufacturing, driftwood, fabric and beach plastics in her work. She also upcycles, taking old surfboards destined for landfill, using them as canvases, and turning each into a piece of wall art.

Various original artworks are available for sale on her website, along with limited edition prints, created in Cornwall on sustainable bamboo paper. Commissions of all kind are welcome, from painting on classic canvas to re-purposed surfboards, and are the perfect bespoke gift to celebrate a big occasion, from birthdays to weddings and anniversaries. Gemma also teaches painting workshops once a month, helping others to re-purpose waste into art.

The Association of British Naïve Artists (ABNA) is delighted to present The Naïve Eye, an exhibition of Naïve art by over 50 members. It takes place from 11th to 22nd June 2023 from 11am to 5pm daily, with a private viewing on 10th June from 7pm to 9pm. Colour and joy are themes throughout, with over 150 paintings and ceramics on display. The ABNA was formed in 2002 by Peter Denham and Mervyn Clingan. Shortly afterwards, Peter wrote an article in a leading art magazine which prompted some hitherto unknown Naïve painters as well as some well known ones, to write and ask about becoming members. Free to visit, here you can uncover the world of the Naïve artist for yourself. With non-professional artistic training, Naïve Art is a true expression of personal freedom. Celebrating those who save lives at sea, in a new exhibition at the Jackson Foundation.

The RNLI is the focus a major new exhibition by internationallyrenowned contemporary artist Kurt Jackson. This free exhibition documents the incredible role of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in Cornwall, celebrating its vital work within the coastal community.

Jackson’s RNLI Cornwall features over 75 paintings varying in scale from postcardsized pieces to large canvasses that capture the charity’s iconic blue and orange lifeboats nestled into Cornish harbours and breaking through mountainous waves. Closer to shore are paintings featuring lifeguards at the centre of Cornish beach life at locations including Sennen, Gwithian, Porthtowan and Trebarwith.

RNLI Cornwall includes a selection of paintings from the inside of Mousehole's old Penlee Lifeboat Station, captured as it was left following the disaster that resulted in the loss of 16 souls –a poignant reminder of the sacrifice made.

As part of his lifelong commitment to charitable giving, Kurt Jackson has donated the painting ‘Sennen flowing tide’ to fundraise in aid of the RNLI. Until August, the Jackson Foundation is running a prize draw to win ‘Sennen flowing tide’, with 100% of proceeds donated to support the RNLI. Tickets and information are

available from the Jackson Foundation website www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com/RNLI-draw.

With the lifesaving charity set to celebrate its 200th anniversary, the Jackson Foundation has also gifted the RNLI space in its upper gallery to explore the work of the RNLI in Cornwall as seen through the lens of the camera over the last two centuries. These photographs provide a unique view of the RNLI’s development in Cornwall through the eyes of various photographers and the techniques and technology that have changed over the course of time.

Kurt Jackson’s RNLI Cornwall and RNLI Cornwall: Through the Lens run until August 19th at the Jackson Foundation, a multi-awardwinning gallery space in St Just, west Cornwall. Admission to the Jackson Foundation is always free to the public, so make sure to head down St Just this summer for an exhibition that won’t easily be forgotten.

New designs on

THE HORIZON

Introducing Jo Downs’ latest collection of Cornish-inspired glasswork.

Since the opening of her glass gallery in Sunningdale, Ascot, artist Jo Downs has brought a touch of the Cornish coast to the urban south east. Each season Jo presents a new collection, and this March she launches Cornish Sunset, a bright new series inspired by beach walks on a warm spring evening.

Beginning with the pure white of Cornish sands, her palette extends through the dazzling blues of the Atlantic Ocean, to the golds and flaming reds of a sunset in a clear blue sky. The lovely, liquid quality of Jo’s designs, which allow the ripples and bubbles of the fusing process to shine through, make her glass glow with colour and texture. The Cornish Sunset collection includes coasters, candle stands, vases, dishes, mirrors and more, and is available from mid-March online, at Jo’s Cornwall galleries and at Jo Downs Handmade Glass Gallery Sunningdale, which has become her flagship venue for the display of new designs. You can also see the new Cornish Sunset collection, alongside pieces from other Jo Downs ranges, at the Craft in Focus event at RHS Garden Wisley from 27th April to 1st May.

If you have a custom commission in mind, the Cornish Sunset colourway can be incorporated into a unique design made especially for you. Jo creates each commission at her private studio in Cornwall, and her Sunningdale gallery offers a free design service, guiding you through the process from first thought to final creation. For large scale or architectural commissions, Jo also offers a full installation service by arrangement.

Jo Downs Handmade Glass Sunningdale also runs regular workshops for groups of up to eight people, where you can learn the art of glass fusing with studio professionals. Each session includes a demonstration, followed by the opportunity to make pieces including fused glass hangings, coasters and framed artworks.

This season, Talland Bay Hotel is shining a spotlight on local suppliers with a new ‘Meet the Makers’ break, offering guests the chance to discover the people and stories behind the luxury Cornish coastal retreat. The package has been curated to celebrate some of the best Cornish tipples and to meet the people behind the hotel’s excellently stocked bar. Guests are invited to step inside the doors of two independent drinks suppliers who are carving their own path.

This includes a guided tour of Colwith Farm Distillery at Lostwithiel, Cornwall’s first plough-to-bottle distillery, makers of award-winning spirits and the team behind the hotel’s own blend, Talland Bay No.1 gin. Unlike many craft distilleries, Colwith Farm Distillery forgoes mass-produced base spirit in favour of creating its own from scratch, from potatoes grown on the fifth-generation family farm. The tour includes walking stepby-step through the process of preparing, mashing and distilling the potato wine as well as a tutored tasting of the distillery's flagship vodkas and gins.

The break also features a tour of Knightor Winery, set above St Austell Bay. The winery was founded in 2011 and today Head Winemaker, David Brocklehurst and the team produce the best still and sparkling

Cornish wines, along with a selection of vermouths and spritzers, using a relatively hands-off approach at their two coastal vineyards in Portscatho and Seaton. Visitors enjoy a guided tour through the display vines followed by a peek into the winery for a brief introduction to how wine is made, and finally a tasting of four wines. A gourmet stay in Cornwall wouldn’t be complete without a feast, and the package includes a nine-course dining experience with accompanying wines in the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, showcasing the best local seasonal fare. The three-night ‘Meet the Makers’ break costs from £605 per person including accommodation and daily breakfast, a nine-course dining experience with matching wines on one night, and guided tours of Colwith Farm Distillery and Knightor Winery (based on two people sharing a room). This special break is available from June through to August, offering the ultimate in indulgence and relaxation.

Welcome to PORTHLEVEN

Words by Jude Kereama

Jude Kereama, owner of Porthleven’s Kota and Kota Kai, details why this bustling harbour village has got to be one of Cornwall’s premier dining destinations.

Since the very first day Kota opened, we have had B&B rooms. In fact, Kota in its former life has been many things, but it was also once an old coach house. The separate building that now houses our prep room was once a stable for the horses, tired after a hard day’s work.

FOODIE 68 | CORNWALL LIVING

Today, we have three double rooms that vary in price according to the size of the room. All have king-size beds but some have extra space for families. Room one has a comfortable pullout bed from the sofa, and room three has a mezzanine floor with a small double for kids. We are now looking at building a three-bedroom apartment extension that has all the facilities for a family to stay for a week. If the family is larger, we are able to connect other rooms to the apartment when extra space is needed. We hope to have this finished by Christmas.

The point of difference with a stay at Kota, especially in the 'off season', is that we always have a deal going for a dine and stay. These seem to be really popular, incorporating a six-course meal, stay, and breakfast. Having the rooms really helps us to accommodate all the foodies that want to come and dine and don’t want to drive home, and who can blame them? We get visitors from all over Cornwall, but also from around the world, and what they each have in common is that they’re looking for a dining experience where they can have –and enjoy – the wine flight, without having to worry about a designated driver.

In terms of our location, Porthleven has really become a foodie destination. There is such a great group of restaurants, cafes, a brewery, roastery, and pubs that can easily keep visitors entertained for over a week. There are also a few evening spots for those who wish to have a later night post dinner. Apart from Kota and Kota Kai, there is such a great range of varying chefs and dishes in the village that makes a visit here for a week a must. And really, especially in the summer when the village comes to life, a stay here would not be complete without a visit to all the amazing pubs and bars that are packed full of revellers everyday.

Food, drink and atmosphere aside, Porthleven is just a beautiful place to stay. With its horseshoe harbour, it is an absolute must to jump from the high wall… if you dare. Paddleboarders, surfers, sea kayakers and swimmers all absolutely love Porthleven. Then there’s Porthleven beach that is manned by the RNLI.

Perhaps you prefer lacing up your boots and walking? Again, Porthleven is just a treat! Being on the South West Coast Path, it doesn’t matter which way you walk along the cliffs as they are both incredibly beautiful. If you walk east, you are heading towards Lizard Point (the most southerly point in mainland UK). Along this stretch of coastline there are some of the most stunning beaches to visit, including Kynance Cove, Polurrian beach, Poldhu beach, Church Cove, and Kennack Sands, to name a few. Alternatively, walk west and you’ll be heading for Land’s End, with fantastic beaches like Rinsey Cove, Hendra and Praa Sands, all within easy walking distance. Another great walk is the five-mile loop from Porthleven that takes you through the Penrose Estate past Loe Bar and through the woods, back to Porthleven.

For those keen to immerse themselves in Cornwall’s burgeoning festival scene, if you come in April you may find yourself here in time for the Porthleven Food and Music Festival. Playing host to the best chefs from the UK and Cornwall, each cooking up a storm, there are also buskers, street performers, food stalls, food markets, bars, and bands playing all weekend. Oh, and don’t forget about Flora Day! Taking place just up the road in Helston, this local, centuries-old celebration is another unmissable Cornish event.

Porthleven is an ideal place to explore from, with Penzance 12 miles away, Falmouth 14 miles, St Ives 13 miles, Helford River 12 miles, and Lizard Point 12 miles distant. Everything is easy to get to, and after a long day spent exploring, your welcome back to your accommodation at Kota – with the amazing food and drink that goes with it – will mean you can rest and refuel in style, ready for the next day’s adventure.

OF FLAVOUR A punch

Having launched Cornwall’s first black spiced rum back in 2021, the chaps at Crusty Juggler Rum have added another flavour to their range for the 2023 season – Black Strap Pineapple.

Launching at Porthleven Food Festival last month, the first batch of the new flavour was available for sampling at Crusty Juggler’s trader stand – the feedback was overwhelmingly positive: “It was great to see the reactions of the first customers to try the pineapple rum,” explains Co-Founder Tom Hanson. “We wanted to create a product that was bursting with pineapple flavour but that wasn’t too sweet and sickly. Based on the feedback, I think we’ve achieved that.”

Porthleven Food Festival was the first event of the year for the family-run rum company who will also be the exclusive rum sponsor for the St Ives Food and Drink Festival in mid-May and north Cornwall’s Rock Oyster Festival in late July. “The St Ives Food Fest is our home festival and holds a special place in our hearts,” Tom continues. “We’re returning

this year with some new products and some exciting new cocktails. Rock Oyster Fest is a new one for us but something we’ve wanted to be a part of for a long time. We couldn’t be more excited!”

Crusty Juggler will also be leading cocktail masterclasses at both festivals, where attendees have the opportunity to sample the range and learn how to make a number of Crusty’s signature cocktails. There will also be a talk about the origins of the brand and how the rum is produced at the team's facility near St Ives.

So, what’s in store for Crusty Juggler for the rest of 2023? “In addition to St Ives and Rock Oyster, we’re also sponsoring a number of high-profile events throughout Cornwall,” says Tom. “There might also be one or two more products heading your way before the year’s out!”

Having trained alongside Michelin star chefs, and now Chef Patron of The Rising Sun in Truro, Tom Hannon’s passion, energy and drive are infectious. His love of classic flavours and precision cooking see him develop menus that guests want to return to again and again.

Katie’s background in art and design has ensured the quirky, intimate spaces in the 18th century building are used to their full potential, adding a contemporary feel to a relaxed and unpretentious environment.

Tom and his kitchen team create a dining experience that is sophisticated, with a fantastic balance of flavours and textures cleverly constructed to elevate and enhance the best seasonal ingredients. Procurement from passionate local suppliers is at the core of the kitchen ethos and shines through on the menu, from rod and line-caught fish (they are licensed to buy direct from fishermen) to vegetables from a justice-oriented, ecologically supportive and sustainable farm a few miles away.

You could be forgiven for assuming it is all about the food at this little gem of a pub, but with one of the best back bar selections to be found in the county it is most definitely a destination for craft spirits, carefully curated cocktails, unconventional wines and award-winning national and local beers. The same ethos for responsible sourcing and sustainability in the food runs right through the pub, from biodynamic wines (Tom’s wife

Katie is a trained sommelier and curates the wine list around these values whilst creating a list perfectly in sync with Tom’s indulgent food) to local craft beers and locally grown, seasonal flowers on the tables.

With a newly renovated courtyard garden on the scene this spring and summer, you can expect laid-back summer seafood barbeques, fabulous feast nights and mini festivals through the season. The first event will be a dinner and wine tasting evening with the incredible Italian wine producer, Antinori. Think canapés and drinks in the courtyard garden to kick things off, before a five-course menu paired with exquisite wines in the restaurant, all hosted by Antinori’s charming Emanuele.

What’s more, we can expect a muchanticipated whiskey event to take place in the courtyard garden later in the summer with the inspirational Craft Irish Whiskey Company. But, if you can’t wait until then to pop in, find a comfy seat and try The Taoscán Experience! Their multi-award-winning chestnut and tawny port Irish whiskey is one of a kind and will certainly leave you wanting more.

EXPERIENCEAn island

Just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly enjoy a unique climate, both warmed by the Gulf Stream but also battered by the winter gales. Nature flourishes here in many different ways, from the sub-tropical beauty of Tresco’s gardens to the wild and untamed landscapes of Bryher, St Agnes and Gugh. Spending even just one day on the Isles of Scilly is an experience that you will never forget and there is a raft of experiences just waiting for you and your four-legged friends.

It comes as no surprise that boats play an important part of life in the Isles of Scilly. They are the best way to get from one island to another and an excellent way to see seals, seabirds and wildlife. The calm, clear seas around the islands make this the ideal place to practice your watersport skills or to dip a toe in the water for the first time – whether it’s wild swimming, snorkelling, kayaking or paddle boarding. Beachcombing and rockpool safaris are family favourites. From cowrie shells to sea glass, there is always treasure to be found on shore, and at lowtide, rockpools become mini-aquariums – all you need is a bucket and your eyes.

If you fancy a tipple, the islands are home to vineyards and even a gin school. And for foodies, the bounty of the sea is a given, from fish and chips to fresh lobster. We still haven’t mentioned the miles of coastal paths, spectacular beaches, golf, horse riding, cycling… the list goes on. The islands are famously dogfriendly, and your dogs are very welcome on board both flights and ferry.

All these experiences take place in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of the world you will ever see and can be enjoyed in just one day. However, there is so much to see, feel and do on the islands that for a lot of people, one day is simply not enough! However you choose to travel to the islands, by Skybus from Land’s End, Newquay or Exeter, or on Scillonian III from Penzance, Isles of Scilly Travel will ensure your journey is as memorable as the destination.

SAVE LIVESLaunching to

We talk to Daniel Atkinson, the current coxswain of the Lizard RNLI lifeboat, to discover more about the part he plays in keeping the Cornish coast safe.

Afleet of over 400 RNLI lifeboats across the UK and Ireland are poised to answer one of the thousands of rescues they receive each year. Relying on donations and funding, the RNLI provides an essential service around the coast of Cornwall. The Lizard RNLI lifeboat station at Kilcobben Cove sits an impressive 45 meters above the water. Its steep ramp is where Rose, the station’s Tamar class allweather lifeboat launches on each rescue, braving the ocean and the elements to save lives at sea.

Can you tell us about your background and how you became involved in the RNLI?

I began as an RNLI volunteer in Fowey. I was training to be a plumber at the time. I had no experience of boats at the time but wanted to give something back to the community.

What was your first role on the lifeboat and how did you progress?

I started as a volunteer on the inshore lifeboat before becoming a crew member on the allweather lifeboat. I then trained to become a mechanic before taking up my first full-time position in Humber where I spent seven years in this very unique location. I joined the Lizard lifeboat as mechanic in 2009, becoming coxswain in 2020. There is a lot of specialist training involved, some of which is undertaken at the RNLI’s purpose-built college at Poole.

How many crew members are there at the Lizard and what are their roles? There are two full-time members, myself and mechanic Ed, 24 boat crew and ten shore crew. A number of our crew are trained as emergency medical technicians and we also have a doctor, Dr Christopher Cuff who volunteers in an advisory role.

Can you talk us through what is involved in a ’shout’?

The coastguard will contact the lifeboat station’s Deputy Launch Authority (DLA). If a launch is agreed, the coastguard will then page

everything – work, family, friends – to run to the rescue and I will then pick the crew of seven depending on the type of rescue involved. We can launch at all tides, and most weathers.

What does working for the RNLI mean to you?

It is a fantastic organisation, and my colleagues have become an extension of my own family. You can volunteer for the RNLI in many different ways, not just as boat crew; without the shore crew we couldn’t launch and recover, similarly with fundraising or helping at the visitor centre. Every role is vital.

What advice would you give for residents and visitors when it comes to staying safe around our shores?

If it looks rough, it is rough and the sea doesn’t take any prisoners. Ask for local advice if you’re unsure or visit the RNLI website for advice and survival techniques.

THE NATURAL solution

For a sustainable, luxury wild-spa experience, Kernow Springs’ hot tubs and saunas are an eco-choice that will nourish body and soul.

Cornwall-based former boat builder and father of two, Martin Dean, built a couple of wood-fired hot tubs for his garden after sampling their relaxing delights whilst on a family vacation. His beautiful back yard creations garnered much interest and as word spread demand for Martin’s hot tubs increased to the point he was able to launch his own company, Kernow Springs. Now a thriving business, Martin and his team build and supply eco-friendly woodfired hot tubs and saunas across the south west.

Many of us are choosing a greener lifestyle, becoming more conscious of ways we can reduce our environmental impact. Purchases and lifestyle habits affect the environment, and it’s important that we spend time evaluating the eco-friendly and sustainability aspects of the products we buy. Combine this with the rising energy bills of recent months and it’s no wonder that any dreams of a traditional hot tub may feel further from reach than ever. However, Kernow Springs has something in store that might have you re-considering giving up on your luxury dream.

For centuries, different cultures around the world have recognised the many benefits associated with soaking in a traditional wooden hot tub. The Greeks, the Romans and the Japanese regard it as a ritual – an act of comforting the body and nourishing the soul. With the

wood-fired hot tubs and saunas of Kernow Springs, the occasional whiff of smoke and the crackle of the fire is a comforting reminder that the water in your hot tub and the steam in your sauna is being heated by burning carbon neutral ‘coppiced’ wood – no electricity, no pumps, 100% natural and 100% sustainable.

The ‘sauna revolution’ is well and truly underway here in Cornwall and all Kernow Springs wood-fired saunas are bespoke built to suit your outdoor space, ranging from two person to 12 person in either traditional Barrel, Box, Oval or Arch designs. Optional extras include internal changing rooms, internal shower rooms, cold water drench buckets, a full galvanised tin roof and even a unique Full Moon window to maximise those stunning Cornish views! All are hand built on site, avoiding any access issues. What’s more, you can even try out all of Kernow Springs' wood-fired wonders at the new interactive showroom – the Nordic Spa in Wadebridge. SPRINGING INTO ACTION

Cornwall in the spring offers some amazing activities, from coastal walks to wonderful beaches, along with a myriad of outdoor pursuits and sports. It would be a shame to feel unable to enjoy and engage in these because your knee is holding you back!

If you are suffering from knee pain, an injury or perhaps arthritis is preventing you from living your life, why not explore all available options and solutions? From non-operative treatments to surgical intervention, you could consult a knee specialist that can truly offer tailor-made solutions to your knee needs.

Mr Pengas is a trauma and orthopaedics consultant specialising solely on knee pathology. He has completed sought-after fellowships and a doctorate thesis, and has maintained an active interest in knee sport injuries, joint preservation and biological solutions that can enhance and prolong your native knee function.

What's more, he's an active member of several national and international knee societies, including the Biological Knee Society, ESSKA (European Society of Sports Traumatology Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy) and ICRS (International Cartilage Regeneration and Joint Preservation Society) amongst others.

“The best knee you will ever have is your own,” says Mr Pengas, so it is imperative that the correct diagnosis and management options are explored in a timely manner, to enhance the chances of your native knee’s survivorship and function. Not all painful

knees require replacing with metal and plastic or, indeed, surgery. Management options usually vary from non-surgical to surgical in most cases and should be discussed to allow for tailor-made bespoke solutions to fit each individual’s needs.

So, if you have been unlucky enough to have had a sporting knee injury or suffer with knee pain or arthritis, don’t let that hold you back. Seek expert advice and explore your options with an exclusively knee-focused specialist, by booking an appointment at Duchy Hospital. Call the dedicated private patient team on 01872 438141.

ROSELAND PENINSULA

In many respects this property is unique to the village of Veryan. It is an imposing late-Victorian former farmhouse quietly located on the outer edge of the village yet close enough to be accessible on foot to local facilities. It is approached from a minor country road leading off from Veryan Green where a circular driveway flanked by mature conifers provides the first and lasting impression of a period country house testimony to its original form and character. The house is a handsome building with natural stone elevations highlighted by stuccoed embellishments to the window and door openings on the front elevation and brick detailing to the rear. Whilst very much a classic house of its period it has been sympathetically upgraded over the years and is now a very comfortable family-size home. A comprehensive oil-fired heating system has been installed with radiators in all rooms and the majority of the windows have been replaced with sash double-glazed frames simulating their original style. The house together with extensive garaging, stables, gardens, grounds and paddock extends to over 3 acres.

Polcouta Farmhouse will be of wide appeal but especially family orientated persons with children wanting ponies as well as those retired and looking for that special property with a lovely garden and enough land to ensure continued protection and privacy. It lies within an area recognised as being of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within a mile of the sandy beaches of Pendower and Carne.

Dive Project Cornwall provides an education programme and experience opportunity, raising awareness of the importance of the planet's marine environment.

Alongside Dive Project Cornwall’s education project, which is available to all secondary schools and can be accessed via its informative website, a base has now been established at Porthkerris in Cornwall, where schools from all over the UK are invited to become familiar with the ocean. This experience opportunity takes the form of a competition which gives 400 teenagers the chance of winning a sixday, life-changing trip to Cornwall to learn to scuba dive. The hope is that the children then go on to be Ocean Influencers, acting positively to engage, inspire and motivate the next generation in a bid to save the planet.

The lucky teenagers are put through an immersive ocean-based education programme that they will take out into the world to improve everyone’s understanding of the fragility of the oceans. At the end of June 2022, Dive Project Cornwall ran the first pilot week, introducing 20 students from Sir James Smith School, Cornwall, to a week of scuba diving and marine conservation, officially becoming the very first group of Ocean Influencers!

“It was a proud moment for everyone involved,” says Founder, Andrew Forster, “to finally bring together all the elements to create this life-changing experience. As Ed McGuffie, Deputy Head told us, the children

have returned as completely different individuals, becoming more confident and resilient with a new set of life-skills. To be a part of such an integral change in a young person's life is hugely inspiring for us and we can't wait to share these experiences with our other winning schools.”

Head of Diving for Dive Project Cornwall, Darren Sutton explains further: “We have a superb team here at Porthkerris – many of whom are volunteers – and we’re very fortunate to have a raft of incredible and tirelessly supportive sponsors and partners. From PADI Scuba Diving and the Marine Conservation Society, to Falmouth Marine School and Porthkerris Dive Centre to name just a few, it’s been wonderful to witness everybody coming together in their shared desire to deliver the ambitious goals of the project. One school that we recently hosted have already returned home and set up an environmental group to champion the welfare of our seas. As the adage goes, ‘every little helps’, and if we can inspire a generation of Ocean Influencers to respect, love and cherish the ocean, that will surely drive the passion needed to protect it.”
