s summer gets into full swing, we’ve got festival fever with a diverse array of events happening across Cornwall. So, in this month’s cover feature, we preview a few highlights, from the inimitable Port Eliot to the everpopular Falmouth Week (page 12). If you’d like to inject some summer style into your wardrobe, we get some sunny fashion advice from the team at Bishop Phillpott, the independent boutique in Truro (page 85). Why would you go on holiday and leave your beloved pooch behind? Well, you don’t have to! There’s no better place to bring your dog, with miles of coast path to explore and lots of dog friendly attractions. Why not plan a trip to the Roseland with your four-legged friend? Check out our guide to canine Cornwall (page 81). We also review some other gorgeous holiday homes across Cornwall, including fantastic boltholes in Porthleven and Lusty Glaze (page 46) and the grand Bonny Alva overlooking St Austell bay on the south coast (page 98). We’re always on the look out for new places to eat, so for our restaurant review, we headed to the Rum & Crab Shack in St Ives (page 57), and what a treat it was! Once again, we include our Kids Love Cornwall Living magazine, with more ideas for getting out and about with the children, including outdoor performances at Trebah Garden (page 72). And our usual ‘Book worms’ page returns, with more great to reads for the kids to get stuck into this summer (page 74). Happy reading and we hope you have a great summer!

Success for Aspen and Ash at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Artisan flooring experts Aspen and Ash enjoyed a successful RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sharing a stand with the awardwinning Tregothnan Estate. The ambitious stand told a story of city and country, intertwined by botanical history and a love for garden innovation. Aspen and Ash built the stand from Tregothnan Oak, and featured a luxurious walkway laced with Cornish tin – the first time this technique has been achieved. The shelving on the stand was also handmade by Aspen and Ash, along with beautiful Olive Ash worktops that were used to enhance the counter of the UK’s only tea producers. Aspen and Ash creates elegant
flooring and worktops from Tregothnan Oak, Olive Ash and Douglas Fir to add natural beauty to any property. Discover more at www.aspenandash.co.uk or call 01209 210753
Exhibition at Lighthouse Gallery invokes the Cornish coast Lighthouse Gallery in Causewayhead, Penzance, offers a friendly welcome and a bright fresh space in which to appreciate beautiful paintings, handmade glass, sculpture, ceramics and of course fabulous, original artist made jewellery. The upcoming Cornish Coast Exhibition, which opens on the 7th July, showcases three artists each offering something very different. Gallery owners Christine and Tracey are looking forward to hanging the new paintings. “It’s always so good to have a complete change and refresh the gallery with new work.” Gemma Pearce has long been a favourite of the Lighthouse ladies. Gemma’s work is fresh and feminine; there is always a special jug or some wild flowers within the image she creates. Mark Poprawski’s beautiful depictions of dramatic skies along the Cornish Coast often find their way to London and beyond. Michael Sanders’ atmospheric coastal paintings are really about people, although people on a small scale in the landscape. Distant figures on wet sand walking along the beach, a tiny yacht on the horizon, shimmering seas and clouds often threatening a shower, very Cornish! Kit out your holiday home at Three Rivers Furniture, Truro
DAME ESTHER RANTZEN dbe OFFICIALLY OPENS CHURCHILL DEVELOPMENT IN TRURO Everyone who attended the recent official opening of Tregolls Lodge in Truro not only had the chance to share in the celebrations as the development was officially unveiled, but also had a unique opportunity to meet one of Britain’s favourite TV personalities, Dame Esther Rantzen DBE. Tregolls Lodge on St Clements Hill, comprises 59 one and two bedroom private, selfcontained apartments specially designed for retired owners, many of whom were able to meet and chat with Dame Esther and share her experiences and tips for a happy and healthy later life.
If you have a holiday apartment or cottage that needs furnishing, why not head over to Three Rivers Furniture – an independent, family-owned furniture store on Truro’s Kenwyn Street, stocking a vast range of home products, including quality furniture in oak and exotic woods such as mango and acacia, English-made pine furniture and mattresses. Much of the furniture is made in Britain, mostly in the West Country, with a choice of multiple paint finishes and semi-bespoke sizes. “We believe in old-fashioned quality; dovetail drawers, solid drawer bottoms and full assembly,” explains Store Manager Matthew. “From modern dining tables to reclaimed pine chests, it’s built to last.”
For more information, visit the show complex open daily from 10am to 5pm, call 01872 464298 or visit www.churchillretirement.co.uk

Kernow Fires continues to blaze the way high-end brands Skantherm, Rais and Dru (a designer gas range) allow the company even more creativity when working on high-end new builds or renovations. Kernow Metals, the fourth brand launched at the show, excelled themselves creating a bespoke seating area, huge lightboxes and brochure stand.
Dame Esther’s philosophy, which exactly reflects Churchill Retirement Living’s own, is that the retirement years should be anticipated in a positive way. Older people should be supported so that they can find out what’s on offer for them and enjoy life to the full. At Tregolls Lodge, owners can take advantage of the range of features designed to make later life easier; such as the owners’ lounge and coffee bar, guest suite and lodge manager, as well as security features such as a video-entry system and 24-hour emergency careline.
There is a choice of mattresses always in stock, plus the company offers free assembly, and free delivery in Cornwall on orders over £300. So, if you want to make an impression in your holiday home, or simply want a new piece of furniture that’s well built, made in Britain and quality checked, you known where to go.
Cornish company, Kernow Fires, enjoyed huge success at the Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show this April with the launch of four new and exclusive brands to Cornwall. Known as trendsetters amongst the heating world, Kernow Fires enjoy a happy balance between high-end designer wood burners and affordable, reliable, yet stylish wood and multi fuel burners. The introduction of three new
Kernow Fires’ friendly approach, teamed with an eye for detail, has proved popular over the years, which explains the company’s huge following on social media. To keep up with news from this dynamic company, pop in and meet the team at the showrooms in Wadebridge or Redruth, follow the Kernow Fires on Facebook and Instagram or visit the website. Perranporth man to swim the coast for Cornwall Hospice Care Mark Richards has set himself an extraordinary challenge to swim around Cornwall, tackling the 470km challenge in bite-sized chunks over the next two summers, all in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care. “I can’t do the swim in one go, so plan to tackle it piece by piece over the next two years. It’s the swimming equivalent of 46 marathons, but I’ll swim between five and ten kilometres each time and can wait for suitable and safe conditions.” Mark’s inspiration comes from the Cornwall Hospice Care nursing teams who cared for his

Festival Fever Whether a foodie, keen sailor, avid music fan or simply one to let your hair down, there’s a festival happening in Cornwall this summer that’s just for you.
WORDS BY
FELIX ROWE
I
n these interesting times we find ourselves in, there’s no more rewarding feeling than seeing people come together and have a good time, united by common interests rather than what divides them. And that is precisely what festivals are all about; temporarily turning empty fields or working harbours in bustling cultural hubs where people can let go, put their daily lives aside and fully immerse themselves in the collective experience. Festivals have come a long way over the last decade, with ever more independent boutique festivals popping up all over the country, each bringing its own unique take on the scene. What is amazing is the huge degree of diversity and amount of choice on offer. Whatever you are interested in, there’s a festival somewhere that caters just for you. Music, theatre, comedy, food, literature, sailing… the list goes on. Increasingly more festivals are billing themselves as family events, catering for children as much as their parents, with a range of activities and events aimed at accommodating the younger audience. And, contrary to the traditional belief, immersing yourself in a festival certainly doesn’t mean ‘slumming it’. Yes, we’ve all seen the iconic images on the TV every year of Glastonbury campers caked in mud from head to toe – and for many, this is the epitome
of festival immersion. But for those who like to soak up some culture in a little more comfort, you’ll find a surprising degree of contentment and conveniences available, with many festivals offering VIP camping areas, luxury yurts, hot showers and more – well worth the additional cost if you’re more a fairweather glamper than hardcore camper. Why not hire a luxury campervan or motorhome to enjoy all your creature comforts, without the fear of being washed away in your tent? There are many great camping accessories you can take along to enhance your basecamp. For example, we’re big fans of the lightweight smokeless cooking stoves from Cornish company Anevay (www.anevaystoves.com), a festival essential (where barbeques are permitted, of course), perfect for cooking your sausages simply and easily, without any fuss.

Another development in recent years is the introduction of luxury spa experiences at festivals. Keep a look out for Kernow Springs’ Roaming Eco Spa, headed to a festival near you (www.kernowsprings), and book yourself in for a relaxing spa session – the ultimate remedy to ensure weekend survival. Featuring wood-fired hot tubs and sauna yurt, hot and cold showers, private changing rooms and a snug Bedouin chill out lounge (with its own bean bags, rugs and throws), this is about as far removed from slumming it as it goes! There was a time, not that long ago, when you’re only option for eating out at a festival meant forking out eye-watering prices for soggy chips and a polystyrene cup of flat beer. However, those days are long gone. As our recent pop-ups feature highlighted, there’s a whole host of interesting and independent stallholders serving delicious local produce and quality worldwide-inspired street food. From tasty burritos to hog roasts, to vegan delicacies; crisp wines to craft beers and locally pressed ciders, food and its provenance is now taken as seriously as the main event itself, and nowhere more so than Cornwall. But onto the events themselves, and with such a wealth on Cornwall’s festival scene, unfortunately we can’t include them all,
CL--61--EHM--Festivals cover story--6.00.indd 4
so here is just a flavour of what to expect. Kicking things off is summer circuit favourite, the Rock Oyster Festival, which has found a new home near the Camel Trail. Featuring three stages, and set to the wonderful backdrop of the Camel estuary, revel in the array of music and performing arts, including sets from Electric Swing Circus and Lily Lyons. Children under 12 go free, and there’s plenty for them to enjoy, such as Mini Yoga sessions, as well as storytelling from raconteur extraordinaire, Mark Fraser. And then there’s the food, with tasty snacks from Wild Food Kitchen and Steamphunk Café among others. Tropical Pressure promises to be “Cornwall’s most colourful, kid friendly and globally themed festival”. Situated on a 42-acre site above Porthtowan on the north coast, expect three days of celebratory music from and inspired by Africa, Latin America

and the Caribbean, including Canalon de Timbiqui, Felix Baloy and Bareto. The dedicated ‘Kids’ Zone’ is a fantastic feature of the festival, hosting creative play sessions and world craft and music workshops so the little ones can have as much fun as the grown-ups and get involved in the action. Tropical Pressure is entirely vegetarian, serving some truly delicious world street food, from vegan patties and jerk curry to pancakes with hibiscus curd and strawberries. Port Eliot is really like nothing else you will experience. Held on the Port Eliot Estate in St Germans, it has been described as “a who’s who of the art, fashion and literary worlds” by the Evening Standard, and “one of the coolest festivals on the summer circuit” by GQ and Vogue, which is all the recommendation you need. The really fantastic thing about a festival is that five people could go and have five completely different – but equally enthralling – experiences, such is the variety of things to see and do. Nowhere is this more so than at Port Eliot. The festival features – among its many offerings – art exhibitions, fashion shows, craft workshops, food and drink presentations, comedy, music and theatre performances, and
wellbeing sessions, where you can take part in everything from SUP yoga to “basking in the healing power” of a shamanic journey sound bath (I’m not sure exactly what this entails, but it definitely gets my vote!). Tents are pitched in the shadow of the grand country house, as the estate makes way for entertainment, from woodland wonders, riverside ramblings, to live performance in the estate’s historic chapel. Leopallooza is – in the organisers’ own words – “a festival built by festival lovers”. Independent in spirit and still run entirely by the same small group of friends who first put their dream into action over a decade ago, Leopallooza at The Wyldes near Bude has built a name on championing emerging talent, just before they hit the big time, from Bastille to Eliza Doolittle. Falmouth Week is always one of the biggest events on the calendar, as coorganiser Sarah Walker explains. “With its origins in a local sailing regatta dating back at least far as 1837 (we have an engraved trophy to prove it!), the week has evolved into not only a major sailing competition, but also an opportunity for sailors and landlubbers to enjoy the many daytime and evening attractions in the town.”

It all kicks off with a carnival on the opening Saturday, with the legendary Red Arrows air display on the Wednesday, the fireworks display on the Friday, and plenty else among the countless shoreside events across the town, from the Moor to Prince of Wales Pier to Events Square, including the popular ‘80s and ‘90s Extravaganza, this year featuring the boyband Blue. Falmouth Week’s popular regatta sees local sailing clubs playing host to racing in and around Falmouth bay. A great vantage point from which to spot the action is Pendennis Point. St Mawes Sailing Club is the host for Friday 11th, sponsored by Philip Martin Estate Agents (www.stmawessailing.co.uk). Here’s what you can expect: “After racing on St Mawes Regatta day, competitors and their friends will be most welcome to visit St Mawes where excellent teas will be served in St Mawes Sailing Club’s clubhouse before the prize giving. On the quay, there will be musical entertainment (including Black Velvet in the afternoon and Tors in the evening), a bar and a barbeque throughout the afternoon and evening.” For those who like to combine their love of music and surfing, the popular Boardmasters in Newquay is a dream come true. This year’s festival promises to be bigger and better than ever, with headliners including Jamiroquai and Alt-J. If you’d much rather giggle than sing along, then Stand-up in the Wyldes is for you. Held at the same fantastic location as Leopallooza, and from the same team, the festival will showcase a whole host of comedians. Alongside the big household name headliners, Bill Bailey, Russel Kane and Katherine Ryan, you’ll find local favourites including Kernow King and Colin Leggo. “This is this Cornwall’s first comedy festival, with an incredible line-up,” says festival co-founder Sam Dunnett, “but it’s also much more than that. We handpick all of the food vendors and entertainment on site, and work with Sharp’s to make sure the bar prices stay in line with local pubs. This makes a lovely setting for a weekend of camping in its own right, with the added bonus of some of the country’s biggest names in comedy making an appearance.” Co-curator, MJ Walker of PunKomedy, adds: “We are massively excited to be bringing many of the highest profile comedy acts in the UK and beyond down to Cornwall.”

Summer continues throughout September, with several chances still to get your festival fix, including Little Orchard Cider and Music Festival, at Penhallow. With ‘shire huts’ and luxury bell tents available to book, you really can camp in style. Then we have the vibrant annual St Ives September Festival, a celebration of music and art, featuring over 300 events across 15 days. Expect plenty of street entertainment, open art studios, art and craft courses, film, theatre, talks, walks, and poetry. But, if you love folk music, this is for you, with four BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards winners performing over the festival: John McCusker, Show of Hands, Sam Kelly of The Changing Room and Cara Dillon. Steve Knightley, of folk royalty and festival patrons, Show of Hands, says: “For over 30 years, St Ives Festival has been one of the must-play events for those of us on the folk, roots and acoustic music scene. We can’t wait to be back in 2017.” Finally, another one to look out for is the Great Cornish Food Festival in Truro, celebrating both the amazing produce of the south west, and our best chefs, including a demonstration masterclass from Michelin-starred maestro Nathan Outlaw. There you have it, festival season covered. So, dig out your wellies, dust off your tent and let the revelry commence!

he town of Fowey (pronounced ‘Foy’) and the village Polruan sit opposite one another at the natural harbour mouth of the river Fowey. The river extends for six miles inland towards Lostwithiel, while the coast and countryside around the river are largely in the ownership of the National Trust. The waters around the harbour are renowned as some of the best sailing waters in the county, and access can be taken to both Fowey and Polruan at all states of the tide. There are a number of tributaries and creeks to explore by boat and footpath, including a beautiful coastal footpath known as the Hall Walk from Polruan to Bodinnick. Fowey provides an excellent range of small shops, along with well-regarded restaurants, galleries and boutiques. There are two sailing clubs in the town, which organise regular competitive sailing events. Across the water, Polruan provides two pubs, a school, village hall and shop, as well as a thriving boatbuilder. On the market with Savills, 3 Dolphin Houses (Fowey) and Tommy’s (Polruan) both offer the chance to own a property with water frontage. 3 Dolphin Houses (guide price: £1,250,000) is an elegant Grade II Listed Georgian
townhouse with three to four bedrooms, fantastic south-facing views and a waterside terrace garden. The house is beautifully presented and incorporates many period features, while quality fixtures and fittings throughout give a luxurious feel. The lowmaintenance waterside terrace garden has a landing platform and provides access to the water via steps; the current owner has a frape licence on mooring. Tommy’s (guide price: £1,000,000) was built on the site of a former boathouse and named after a well-known village character. On the market for the first time since 1959, Tommy’s occupies a prime waterfront position and has water access, a boat store and a mooring (on licence). The house has reverse level accommodation; the first floor is designed to take in the outstanding view, with a glass balcony off the sitting room running the width of the front of the house. There are three bedrooms on the ground floor, all with views up the Fowey estuary.

he Roseland is one of the county’s most picturesque and unspoilt areas, bordered by the Fal estuary to the west and the Channel to the east. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Roseland has long been known for the quality of its landscape and coastal scenery, with many peaceful walking routes through the countryside and on the South West Coast Path. The coast around the Roseland is easily explored by boat or canoe and the waters around the are renowned for high quality sailing. At its tip, the village of St Mawes sits in a sheltered bay with views out of the Carrick Roads towards Black Rock and the Channel beyond. On the market with Savills are two properties that sit at the ‘gateway’ to the Roseland peninsula, offering peaceful countryside living but within very easy reach of the area and the attractions of the rest of the Roseland. Bosue Farm at St Ewe (guide price: £750,000) is a Grade II Listed traditional Cornish farmhouse in a peaceful rural setting. Just 1.4 miles from the Lost Gardens of Heligan and 3.5 miles from the closest beach at Pentewan, Bosue is ideally placed for exploring the unspoilt countryside of the Roseland and its many picturesque villages. The John Nash designed Caerhays Castle and its extensive

gardens are just five miles to the south of the house. Bosue Farm has four bedrooms with views over the gardens, a farmhouse kitchen with a Tregothnan Estate chestnut lintel above the cooker alcove and three reception rooms. The gardens are mature and feature an array of specimen shrubs and trees, and a vegetable garden. Higher Polmenna at Portholland, near Tregony (guide price: £2,000,000), is a renovated country home, which has been extended to provide six bedrooms (five en suite), four reception rooms and a stunning orangery. The house is bright, modern and charming while retaining its original features and traditional appearance; the current owners have gone to great lengths to source appropriate materials during the modernisation of Higher Polmenna. The house is surrounded by landscaped gardens and paddocks extending to approximately six acres, and has a heated swimming pool, patio and extensive outbuildings offering enormous potential for restoration.
With stunning scenery at every turn, tranquillity is guaranteed on the Roseland.

eatures of note in this wonderful home include ornate fireplaces and multi-pane sash windows, as well as slate flagstones and a carved, decorative chimneypiece above the dining room’s fireplace. On the first floor, five bedrooms make up the current configuration, with the master bedroom enjoying its own en suite and the guest suite its own dressing room. The home’s signatory character spills into the stunning bathroom, with a free standing bath and exposed stone walling giving the space a real ‘country cottage’ feel. Downstairs, a study overlooking the courtyard offers well-lit space for working from home, while the library, with a feature fireplace, slate tiled floor and in-built book shelving, means you can arrange your own scholarly space, rather than boxing your books away in the attic. Situated between Truro and St Austell, Penwyn House lies in the heart of the village Grampound – a name that derives from its status as an ancient crossing point of the Fal river. A local primary school makes the area ideal for a young or growing family and on weekends, you and the family can make the most of numerous walks in the surrounding countryside and along the river. Further afield in Truro (just nine miles away) you can make the most of all the high street names, as well as the fantastic foodie options that Cornwall’s cathedral city has to offer. Indeed, with such fantastic locality, a Grade II listing and available with no onward chain, a viewing of this incredible home comes highly recommended.

he village of Praa Sands has everything you could wish for, and more, in a Cornish village. Most notably is the mile-long stretch of beach that could be mistaken for a Mediterranean bay with its golden sand and clear, blue waters. A beach café and bar line the seafront, while the village shop is handy for essentials and your morning paper. Just a short stroll from the beach, and in a quiet residential cul-de-sac you’ll find Waney Lodge. Renovated and spacious, this detached bungalow is hugely versatile. It would make a magnificent sixbedroom, coastal family home or you could use it in its current configuration as a four bedroom property with a two bedroom self-contained apartment. The apartment could provide accommodation for a dependent relative or, with the property’s great seaside location, this would have income potential as a holiday let as it has its own separate access. Many of the reception rooms here have floor-to-ceiling patio doors that let the wonderful Cornish light flood in. The open-plan kitchen-diner in the main part of the house is an ideal family space, well appointed with NEFF appliances, a tiled floor that runs through both areas and the added benefit of underfloor heating. Bedrooms are generous in size and the bungalow has no fewer than four
bathrooms. There are fabulous coastal and countryside views from the property and the pretty garden is well kept with a large expanse of lawn lined with mature trees and shrubs. It’s not often that a property like this comes to the market so don’t delay in getting in touch with The Mather Partnership as we’re sure this gem of a property won’t be on the market for long.

MAKE A
statement
Using the timeless technique of statement furniture you can define any room’s style with ease.
O
ur homes are an extension of ourselves. With each placement of furniture, with each colour chosen and with each style picked over another, we say something about who we are and what we like. When you walk into a room in your home what do you see? Do you see simplicity, a passion for vintage and classic looks or do you rejoice in colour and vibrancy? Well, whatever inherent style you inject into your home, one fantastic way to shake up a space is to include a piece of statement furniture. It’s also the perfect way to add the ‘wow’ factor to a holiday home. A statement piece doesn’t necessarily mean a bright colour and crazy design, it can simply be a piece of furniture that demands attention, whether due to an impressive design, a striking but complementary colour or simply due to where it is placed – for example, a beautiful mirror placed in isolation on a bare wall is sure to catch the eye. At Uneeka, you are sure to find your perfect statement piece unique to your style. For those with an adventurous flair could try combining bright colours with pastels, a new and interesting adaptation of showcasing new with old. Those with a love of all things individual
will adore Uneeka’s range of reclaimed and vintage storage cabinets. This range is filled with bright colours, pastels, multi-layered paint and glassfronted pieces or with decorative details on the handles and clips. While these eyecatching cabinets will probably be used to store your prized possessions, we wouldn’t be surprised if they turned into a prized possession themselves. The collection of frames, mirrors and other display units doesn’t just make a statement of style; as they are all ethically sourced from fair trade suppliers these furniture pieces also make a statement of ethics. Similarly, the Luna frames come in a variety of colours and styles due to the fact they are made from recycled, reclaimed timber from South Africa. With so many statement pieces to choose from, make sure whatever you go for adds character, colour and style to your room and a smile to your face.

ou’ve found your dream home by the sea; a home that encapsulates coastal living and acts as the perfect escape from city life; that radiates relaxed style tailored to you. Of course, creating this idyllic coastal retreat can be difficult when you are working or living out of county. Fortunately, with the help of Truro-based Camellia & Co, you can achieve your dream home within budget, within time and with complete ease. With the expansion of Camellia into Rock on the beautiful north coast, Camellia is now impeccably positioned to take on the thriving property market in north Cornwall, which is currently transforming this striking corner of the county into a vibrant and exciting place to stay. Pop into the showroom to enjoy a fabulous cup of coffee while you browse an incredible array of quality paints, wallpapers and fabrics: you’ll soon start to envisage what your holiday home can be with the help of the incredible team at Camellia. The Camellia team are professional interior designers with particular expertise in luxury coastal properties. Indeed, under founder Elaine Skinner’s careful stewardship, the team at Camellia boasts particular skill in creating relaxed coastal environments with luxurious yet understated schemes. “This does not mean theming the property with shells and driftwood though,” explains Elaine. “It’s about
replicating the juxtaposition of texture and colour.” They’re adept at layering up textures to give the home a lived-in and organic feel, as though a designer had never been involved. The team are straight talking, intuitive and take pride in delivering creative solutions. Elaine adds: “Clients always say to me ‘I never thought of doing that’. I help them push a few boundaries and they trust me to see it through.” Elaine and her team are used to managing entire projects, from knocking down walls to buying cutlery. Similarly, with many clients living or working in different time zones they’re also used to scheduling work in advance and communicating progress with clients via email, Skype and conference calls. “Our clients need someone they can trust to take on their brief so that they can return to their working lives up country or abroad,” explains Elaine. “They have a clear vision, but need us to interpret it and come up with ideas to make it all a reality while working to a budget and delivery deadline. We understand their lives, their time constraints and the level of service that they expect – we always exceed!”

"
ising, unstable energy prices are forcing more and more homeowners to consider more sustainable ways to heat and power their homes. Take one particular couple, for example, who own a property in south Cornwall previously heated by an oil boiler. Familiar with the benefits renewable solutions offer and the instability of oil prices, they were keen to consider more cost-effective, sustainable methods of generating power. After a full assessment of their home, local renewable provider GreenGenUK put forward initial proposals that would modernise the property’s heating and energy provision. Replacing their oil boiler with an air source heat pump allowed the couple’s heating to be provided in a more environmentally friendly manner, as well as reducing annual spend and being eligible for government subsidy. Using heat stored in the air, air source heat pumps achieve 350% efficiency all year round. This resulted in a significant annual saving over the customer’s previous oil system. Furthermore, greater control and functionality ensures a continuous ambient temperature and a friendlier living environment. Installing solar to complement their heat pump was a simple decision. Self-generated solar energy reduces the everyday running costs of the property, in addition to supplementing their new heating.
A solar array generates free electricity and replaces demand from the grid. As such, PV installations significantly reduce a home’s running costs and carbon output. Combining this with an electric air source heat pump minimises energy spend, almost eradicates carbon footprint and provides the ideal green heating and power solution. The real icing on the cake is that the government subsidy via the Feed-in Tariff on the solar and the Renewable Heat Incentive on the heat pump installation is set to earn the couple £14,000 over the next 20 years. GreenGenUK is among Cornwall’s leading installers of both solar PV and air source heat pumps, offering free and impartial guidance, bespoke design and quality installations throughout Cornwall. Are you looking for a more cost-effective, energy efficient way to heat or power your home? Give the informative team at GreenGenUK a call today.

on’t worry, we’ve all been there. You need more space but you’re unwilling to alter the layout of your home. After all, you’ve worked tirelessly to get it just how you like it, so why would you want to start making changes? Sometimes, the best way to make the most of the space available to you is to look outside the confines of your house and think how you can innovatively make the most of your outside space. And then, even when you realise that you probably do have options, you don’t know where to start; how big does the space need to be? What materials do you need? How do you get power out there? Panic not! The team at Project Modular can offer you exactly that – all the services you need to get your pipe-dream project off the ground. All of the company’s additional living spaces are made to the same standard as modern day timber frame houses, so straight away you’re looking at something that far outstrips your average garden shed. All are super insulated, with walls that are typically 200mm thick and floors and roofs constructed to similar specifications, so you also know your new space will be warm when it matters! Interiors are beautifully contemporary and finished to a modern high standard, coming complete with Howdens laminate floor coverings, brushed stainless steel
sockets and switches, as well as fantastic low energy LED spotlights throughout. And, where kitchens and bathrooms are involved, the team sources them from Howdens, Victoria Plum and Better Bathrooms, so quality comes assured. Suitable for any purpose, including yearround living, an additional living space from Project Modular is the perfect solution to meeting the demands of modern family commitments. Why not give the team a call and see what they can do with your unused outside space?

Have fantastic family day out this summer at Cornwall Gold.
C
ornwall Gold, set in 18 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds near Redruth, has been busy producing jewellery for almost 30 years, reflecting Cornwall’s proud mining heritage, outstanding natural beauty and unique way of life. Cornwall Gold is home to the last remaining tin mill in Europe. Tolgus Tin Mill is rich with history, providing the tin that features in the beautiful Tolgus Collection – a bespoke range of jewellery forged from tin, combined with silver and gold. Guided tours through Tolgus Mill offer a wonderful insight into the lives of the men and children who once worked there, when the Cornish mining industry was at its peak. Conditions were noisy and wet; children were expected to follow the footsteps of their fathers and grandfathers before them, being placed on duty in the slime pits or under the shaking tables – a form of labour that would, quite simply, be unthinkable today. Marvel at the working set of Cornish stamps, over 150 years old and thought to be the last in existence. Proceeds from the jewellery made on site ensure that this unique piece of Cornwall’s heritage is preserved for future generations. Lovingly handcrafted to your exact specifications, each bespoke piece of the
Tolgus Bridal Collection contains Tolgus Tin, combined with nine-carat gold. What’s more, a friendly and experienced team are ready to guide you through the selection process, so you can relax in the knowledge that everything is taken care of. Perhaps you have a family heirloom that you’d like to incorporate into your special day. As well as offering a cleaning and repair service, the onsite goldsmiths can transform your existing jewellery. Commission a redesign, to make that special piece of sentimental value just that little bit more extraordinary. A visit to Cornwall Gold is more than just a uniquely Cornish experience. Indulge in some much needed retail therapy in the showroom, before visiting the Cornish Pantry Restaurant, with all ingredients sourced within a 20-mile radius. Whether you stop for an authentic miner’s breakfast or to find the perfect wedding ring, the wonderfully attentive service will ensure your experience is one you’ll always remember.

ABOVE ì Join one of the Fearsome Feasts events at Newquay Zoo and get up close to the animals
T
his summer, Newquay Zoo plays host to a trio of unique afterhours guided tour events. Titled the Fearsome Feasts, these events will allow you to meet the keepers and find out all there is to know about your favourite animals. The events take place out of hours and will give attendees the chance to experience Newquay Zoo’s primates, big cats and bird departments up close. “We are really excited to open our doors for the Fearsome Feasts events; we believe that these three events will really give people an insight into what we do here and the real characters that our animals can be,” says Owen Taylor, Senior Keeper. ‘Primates and Pasties’, the first in the trio, took place on Wednesday 17th May and feedback was fantastic. “It was a fantastic experience,” said one attendee. “It’s something you don’t get to see whilst visiting the zoo in the day. We got to learn so much about primates, and will definitely book again.” The next in the trio, ‘Big Cats and Cupcakes’, followed on 14th June. The final event, ‘Penguins and Pastries’, takes place on 19th July, all of which will allow attendees to get inside animal knowledge from the keepers, a chance to watch the animals feeding, an educational talk from the experts and a bite to eat! You can book tickets for the final event and find out more by visiting the website.

Customs House Loft, Porthleven This delightful first floor apartment can be found on Porthleven’s harbourside, housed in a Grade II listed building dating back to the 1840s. The village is a fantastic base from which to explore the local area, if you can pull yourself away from its excellent selection of restaurants and cafés. There’s a sandy beach here too and excellent crabbing can be had from the harbour wall. The apartment, for four, is bright, spacious and carefully decorated with marine-inspired tones to complement the coastal location. The two bedrooms, both en suite, offer an oasis of calm with the addition of White Company towels and bedding and a snuggly Atlantic blanket at the end of each bed. The living/ dining area is vast with a triptych of windows framing the harbour view. It’s all about the detail here with two chairs perfectly placed in front of the middle window from which you can soak up the view. Binoculars are provided for dolphin spotting in summer and storm watching in winter, and your four-legged friend even gets its own basket of blankets. On arrival you’ll find a freshly baked cream tea courtesy of charming hosts Louise and John, who also personally oversee the property and the changeovers. Holidays don’t come much better than this!

STAY | Ultramarine, Lusty Glaze Lusty Glaze is one of the north coast’s most unique beaches, with the vibe of a sophisticated beach resort, but with plenty of easygoing and laid back natural Cornish charm to spare. Visitors seek out the chilled music sessions, excellent surf school and watersports hire, cool beach bar and stylish restaurant, whilst local aficionados know it’s the antidote to Newquay’s busier spots. For somewhere ideal to stay, try Ultramarine, a stylish holiday home situated on the ground floor of One Lusty Glaze, a new suite of luxury apartments just up from the beach. It’s beautifully presented with stylish designer furniture, well-chosen original artworks, comfy beds and underfloor heating. The owners have styled the interior beautifully to give a relaxed, yet very modern feel, ideal for a laid-back beach holiday. There are great sea views from the westfacing terrace. Imagine watching the sun setting over Newquay’s iconic headland after an energetic day in the surf, with a glass of your favourite chilled tipple in hand, before heading back down to the beach for a seafood supper.

Introducing the Polurrian Bay Hotel, a contemporary seaside retreat perched on the cliffs of the Lizard Peninsula.
T
he Polurrian Bay Hotel is one of those places that, upon visiting, will be forever ingrained in your memory; it has that subtle, indefinable magnetism that pulls you back again and again. I’ll never forget driving for the first time through the winding country lanes of the Lizard peninsula, snaking around the pretty village of Mullion, before arriving, seemingly at the edge of the world. Here the grand hotel rises above the cliff edge, backdropped by an endless expanse of glorious shimmering ocean, stretching out into the horizon and beyond. It’s an aweinspiring spot, one that quite literally takes your breath away. As you enter the grand Victorian building, you find a hotel as unique and magical as the location it inhabits, with attentive staff keen to make your stay an enjoyable one. Instantly, you are welcomed to this seaside retreat where the team invite you to enjoy the finer things in life. Kick the sand off your feet and savour wonderful sea-view rooms, divine Cornish cuisine, spa treatments, swimming pools, crèche facilities and activities. From family dining to fine dining, fantastic Cornish food is at the heart of Polurrian Bay’s hospitality. Whether it’s organic beef reared on Goonhilly Downs or mackerel caught off the Lizard, the kitchen team, led by Head Chef Joe Bartlett, love using ingredients from local growers and artisan suppliers.

Joe has been cooking professionally as a chef for 14 years. Previously, he worked as a chef tutor at the award-winning Ashburton Cooking School, where he was for six years. Before that, Joe was Head Chef at a country house hotel on the edge of Dartmoor where he gained two AA rosettes and held them for two and a half years – it’s fair to say that food is his passion! “Food nourishes the soul in any shape or form,” explains Joe. To unwind and relax, Joe enjoys nothing more than a good old bit of roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, horseradish sauce, “washed down with a bucket of tea, milky with one sugar!” The hotel has a range of fabulous facilities for all to enjoy, including both indoor and outdoor pools, pretty gardens, tennis court, and spa treatments. What’s more, pilates and yoga sessions run at the hotel, for hotel guests, health club members and non-members. Polurrian Bay Hotel has 41 bedrooms and each child that stays receives a Polurrian Pet – a gift from the hotel. Interiors are fresh and contemporary, with a boutique seaside style.
The hotel really is designed for families to enjoy, offering that rare blend of luxury facilities and memorable experiences with a relaxed, informal atmosphere where children are made as welcome as the grown ups. The hotel has a complimentary OFSTED registered Den for younger guests, giving parents some time to unwind themselves, and the Blue Room for older children, which features video games, pool and table football. Plus the cinema room is packed with films to enjoy, perfect for wrapping up the evening with a great family favourite blockbuster. Of course, going to the seaside is all about exploring the great outdoors. The private beach, with public access, is literally on the doorstep, with a little path snaking through the gardens down to the pristine sands of Polurrian Cove below. There are many other great beaches to explore nearby, including Poldhu – great for learning to surf. Whatever your idea of fun on the coast, you can guarantee that you’ll get to experience it with a stay at the Polurrian Bay.

SUMMER DINING Enjoy a sunny bite by the sea at The Lemon Arms, Mylor.
W
hile, if we’re being pedantic, summer doesn’t officially begin until 21st June, some of the exceptional weather we’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy here in Cornwall has already got many of us donning shorts and flip-flops. At the Lemon Arms, with its garden in full bloom and management by Jonny and Sam Pearce (with over 20 years’ experience of running Cornish pubs and restaurants), there’s no reason to wait for the official start of summer to enjoy the fruits of sunny Cornwall. Indeed, walking around Mylor creek and looking over the undulating blue water as it ripples beneath the boats, it’s not hard to work up an appetite, especially as the sun shines and the sea breeze works its way in and out of your lungs. What could be more fitting than a fresh seafood lunch, complemented with a your favourite tipple? Headed up by Daniel Blaszkowski, who previously worked with London seafood specialists Wright Brothers of Borough Market, and Tim Hammill, who learned his trade locally in places such as the Pandora Inn and Mylor Café, the kitchen team has a
keen passion for Cornwall’s amazing local produce and, never knowing what the local day boats are going to bring in, produces an ever changing specials menu for you to peruse, so no visit is ever quite the same. All the food on the menu is made fresh on site, using local, seasonal produce wherever possible, while an award-winning range of Cornish beers and spirits from St Austell Brewery means there’s something to match your palette and choice of dish, whatever the catch of the day! Pop in for an afternoon bite or make a day of it after a stroll around the creek; whatever your plans, if you find yourself near Mylor, be sure to pop into the Lemon Arms. And if you don’t, it’s certainly worth a trip, particularly on a Sunday if you’re hankering for the perfect Sunday roast.

hen looking for somewhere new to eat, I love a good recommendation; something different that draws on great flavours, fine locally-sourced produce and an eclectic drink selection with a twist. Now, my partner and I are both great seafood lovers, I also enjoy a fine rum and, so recommendations really don’t come any higher than The Rum & Crab Shack in St Ives – and its insignia, like me, also sports a moustache! The Rum & Crab shack doesn’t take bookings, operating on a first-come-first-served basis, so you’ll need to get there early if you want get a window seat to enjoy great views across the harbour. The shanty-styled website also simply states: “Seafaring fare from round here, Famous Rums from over there” – that’s it! We’re off in search of treasure. St Ives operates a park and ride facility at Lelant Saltings via The St Ives Bay line, quite possibly the most scenic branch line in Britain, but parking locally wasn’t a problem and after a warm evening stroll through the characterful shops on Fore Street we were there in no time. We took a quick look at the menu displayed outside and headed up a short flight of stairs to go inside. On entering there’s definitely a buzz about the place,

with the main bar to the left and seated dining at the back. It was busy and that’s always a good sign, but within no time we were shown to a table for two. The main dining area is a good size, furnished with an interesting mix of shabby chic wooden benches and tables, the kind you’d expect from a rum and crab shack, and caters for parties of all size. The harbour side of the restaurant is fronted by a wall of Georgian style paneled windows and, combined with sea fishing décor and vintage artwork, gives the place an air of net loft meets pirate galley. Service is good and there’s a wide selection on the menu from small plate starters such as rum and crab soup, crispy devilled whitebait and teriyaki crab claws, through to land and sea mains such as steamed mussels, gumbo and Cajun blackened fish, as well as some great hearty fish sharing boards. But first…the rum. I enquired about the famous selection and was instantly given a little booklet to browse. The impressive choice ranged from interesting light rums and spiced rum cocktails to flavoured and dark navy premium rums. The Rum & Crab Shack also serves its very own ‘Dead Man’s Fingers’, a spiced rum created by the owners – a blend of rums from Trinidad and Barbados, with notes of orange, nutmeg, vanilla and raisin. I chose a rich Kraken Spiced Rum Caribbean with ginger beer, while my partner chose a Rumbullion Caribbean with flavours of cloves, orange peel and cardamom. Both were delicious. For my starter I chose popcorn shrimp: breaded crispy prawns served with a Creole garlic dipping sauce together with a side extra of coriander salsa salad. It was generous; the prawns were large and beautifully cooked, and the salad refreshing. My partner chose
breaded crab balls: a sweet potato, garlic, ginger and chilli mix, packed full of white crab meat... delicious! Whilst tucking in, we chatted easily with other friendly diners whilst listening to a great selection of ‘60s and ‘70s music, creating the perfect atmosphere. For the main course I thought I’d try the namesake Rum Shack Gumbo, a traditional, French-influenced dish with tomato and okra stew with tiger prawns and crab served with long grain rice. This was a dish I have always wanted to try and I wasn’t disappointed. My partner chose the Cajun blackened fish: locally sourced fish coated in a southern spice crust, served with sweet potato fries and grilled corn, along with a side order of house salad. It didn’t last long; everything was cooked to perfection with just the right amount to not leave you feeling overfull. Next stop dessert. Now, I was the designated driver but wanted to keep with the rum theme so I decided on an ‘Old Fashioned Jelly’, one of the house favourite cocktails made into a jelly with a rum and raisin ice-cream, all served in a Kilner jar. There’s also the option to try a flavoured rum, so my partner decided on the ‘Blackberry Manhattan’ – smooth and deliciously fruity. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the location and our surroundings. The staff are courteous and friendly and, whether you enjoy a fine rum or fresh, locally sourced good seafood, I think with The Rum & Crab Shack St Ives we struck gold. Havana Gold.
Every issue, we dine undercover at a different restaurant, tasting the menu and putting the team through their paces in search of the finest eateries, freshest produce and best service. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it! Look out for our ‘Tried and Tasted’ seal of approval.

and delicious food at Porthleven’s Number Twelve
Tucked away just up from the beautiful Porthleven harbour, Number Twelve is a hidden gem. As soon as you walk through the door it is clear that the number one priority is great food and drink. The shelves are full of local produce from chilli jam to gin and biscuits to artisan oils! After the refurbishment, Number Twelve has seen its best year yet. People are drawn to the homemade cakes, soups, quiches, sausage rolls and delicious baguettes that are made before your eyes! Indeed, working with local producers and supporting artisan products remains a key aspect of the Number Twelve ethos, with the team knowing each product’s individual story: especially the spirits and wines. Or, if it’s pizza that gets your taste buds tingling, then pop along after 5pm and enjoy an amazing wood-fired pizza: it’s the perfect refuelling after a day on the beach! In the winter months Number Twelve hosts gin, wine and rum tasting evenings where you can meet the producer, listen to their story and ask plenty of questions – sounds ideal! It’s that time of year again, when we can sit outside and savour the sun throughout the day accompanied by a gentle coastal breeze, and as far as us foodie aficionados are concerned, that only means one thing… it’s time for cream teas and Pimm’s! Absolutely nothing beats sitting on a sun terrace with a refreshing drink or a full Cornish cream tea, and we’ve found the perfect place to do it. Head over to the Alverne, a wonderful independent restaurant tucked away in Penzance. Here you can slurp away to your heart’s desire with a thirst quenching Pimm’s and lemonade in hand, bursting with real fruit and fresh mint – delicious! If you’re feeling a bit peckish, follow this up with the Alverne’s tasty cream tea, featuring
Deryk’s homemade scones, Cornish jam and clotted cream. Enjoy lazy summer afternoons on the sun terrace, and choose from the extensive wine list with nibbles or tapas. In fact, day or evening, the Alverne is the perfect location to grab a bite to eat, with a fantastic selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Delicious ice creams from The Square? We’ve got the scoop! Here at Cornwall Living , we’re big fans of the delicious homemade ice creams and sorbets from The Square in our hometown, Porthleven – perfect for cooling off on a summer’s day. So, we spoke to owner and Head Chef Stew Eddy who shared his tasty pina colada sorbet recipe with us. This great summer sorbet is dairy-free, delicious with summer berries, and adds a tasty zing to a cocktail! You’ll need the following: 2 x 400ml coconut milk; 500ml pineapple juice; a capful of rum; 175g caster sugar; lime juice to taste. Whisk all the ingredients together and turn them in an ice cream maker using the manufacturer’s instructions. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, it can be frozen in a conventional freezer but needs to be whisked every 15 minutes until it is frozen.
This method will create a less smooth ice cream with more ice crystals, but the flavour will be just as scrummy. Alternatively, if this all sounds like too much work, simply head down to Porthleven and try one of the sorbets and ice creams made by Stew and the team, as you watch the boats come and go in the harbour. Coeliacs rejoice
Britain’s favourite seaside dish is waiting for you It’s good news for all coeliacs as Fraser’s Fish & Chips in Penzance is proud to serve coeliac accredited gluten-free fish and chips everyday alongside its traditional fish and chips. The significant investment into the kitchen, processes and training means that Fraser’s can genuinely say that its fish and chips are gluten free, as separate cooking processes ensure there is no crosscontamination. Whether you choose to eat in the fresh, fun and fabulously bright restaurant or out of the box while perched on the beach or on the prom or whether you are enjoying your food with friends for a special occasion or with family as part of a fantastic day out, we think Fraser’s hits the spot! Kids love it too, with their meals served in a beach bucket with a spade, which means the beach bag gets replenished at the same time! The Fraser’s team are proud to call themselves fish and chips fanatics, which is obvious as happy tummies and big smiles can be seen everywhere during your visit. Unveiling the Hidden Craftworks From humble beginnings working out of a 1966 American Airstream trailer in 2014, Craftworks Street Kitchen has come a very long way in a very short space of time, having made a presence at local festivals and events; opened a permanent base in the former HUBBOX site in Truro, and recently, launched the new Craftworks Food Truck. Now, Mick tells us, they’re pleased to announce the next big adventure – The Hidden Craftworks at Padstow Kitchen Garden, Trerethern Farm. Working alongside former Rick Stein’s Head Chef, Ross Geach, Mick, Danny and co. will be setting up a marquee alongside their impressive Food Truck, providing shelter all year round for foodies looking to try something new.
Aiming to open for business on Wednesday 21st June until at least mid-September, there’s no official end date in sight, making this an exciting opportunity indeed! And, with views looking over the rolling hills of the north Cornish countryside, as well as those over to Rock and the Camel estuary, it really is set to be food with a view. So, Mick says: “Watch this space. We’ve a lot lined up, including some potential collaborations with other chefs, as well as get together feast nights with music – it’s all very exciting!” CRAFTWORKS KITCHEN 07920107699 www.craftworkskitchen.com/news
When asked if the Hidden Craftworks will utilise Ross’s produce, Mick tells us: “Yes. The Hidden Craftworks will be different to what we do in Truro – we’ll keep some of the Craftworks staple on the menu, but will experiment more with local produce, offering a daily-changing specials board, including locally caught seafood.”

W
hile the words fresh and local are almost obligatory across countless pubs and restaurants these days, it is always refreshing to see regional and excellent fare on the plate. Never mind the menu blurb, you get the feeling Cornishborn Head Chef Pam Perring at the Bristol wouldn’t have it any other way! Hence this summer the hotel’s new menus make a firm nod to the region’s classics, besides the odd ‘Eureka’ moment in the kitchen. Getting your fish fresh certainly helps when it comes to keeping every day’s menu fresh. ‘Fish and Fizz’ evenings every Friday are a point in case, regularly offering a different catch of the day. You could dip delicious fish fritters in homemade tartare and aioli; or opt for fresh mussels in a classic white wine and cream sauce with skinny chips. Either way, a glass of Prosecco is the perfect match, with a price of just £12.50 per person making this some of the best value in town to start the weekend. Should you fancy visiting earlier in the day though, the hotel’s new bar menu keep things just as unashamedly local.
The Beach Comber’s Lunch, for example, comes with delicious Cornish Brie or Davidstow Cheddar, along with freshly baked bread and homemade chutney. Or perhaps you might prefer smoked fish, served in a sensational salad, with spinach leaves and wholegrain mustard in the mix? Last but not least, a visit for lunch or an evening meal also holds the promise of something delicious for anyone who enjoys homemade puddings. Ingredients such as local raspberries and Callestick Farm ice cream pepper the dessert menu. Or for the ultimate afternoon treat, the Cornish Thunder and Lightning cream tea is a sweet tooth’s dream, mixing Trewithen clotted cream and homemade scones with a healthy measure of golden syrup. Naughty, but very nice indeed; and we’re certainly not going to argue with Pam’s ‘proper Cornish’ approach to good food.

Are your children at risk? It is a morbid thought, but what would happen to your children if you died? Who would care for them and where would they live? If you have children under 18, avoid these problems by including provisions in your will. You can name a carer, called a guardian. The guardian acts as a parent, making the decisions you would have made. You can also appoint someone to look after their inheritance until they reach 18 or older. By including appropriate provisions, you have peace of mind knowing that in the worst-case scenario, your children and their inheritance are protected. If you would like advice on any of the above issues and to discuss your individual circumstances, contact Gemma Sampson of Sampson Solicitors.
For more information call 01288 353542 or 07792 195309 or visit www.sampson-solicitors.co.uk

BENEATH THE STARS Over the coming summer holidays, why not check out Trebah Garden’s full summer line up of outdoor entertainment?
T
rebah Garden, with acres of lush, colour-adorned walkways to explore makes for a fantastic summer afternoon with the kids and this summer, Trebah is pleased to announce a full line up of live music, comedy and traditional theatre, including many family shows. Al fresco theatre has become a great Cornish tradition. It’s a brilliant way to get the whole clan together, whether it’s in the daytime or the evening; bring blankets, fizzy-pop for the little ones and wine for yourselves, and prepare for an exciting walk through the garden, before a performance under the stars. You won’t need a seat, as the Trebah amphitheatre has raised terraces and hireable back support cushions, and forget about bringing a picnic, too – Trebah Kitchen offers a different street food dish for each performance, but you’ll need to book in advance. With so much to see, do and explore, you might as well make a day of it, especially as
tickets are valid for garden entry from 2pm. You can even bring the dog, but be aware that four-legged friends are unable to attend the evening performances. Shows this season include those from award-winning local companies, such as The Emperor’s New Clothes from Illyria and The Third Policeman from Miracle Theatre. Or, if innovative puppetry sounds like something you’d like to see, be sure to catch the talented Smoking Apples. Daytime performances inlcude Craig from Squashbox, with his Curious Creatures show. Young families can look forward to Folksy Theatre’s Smartest Giant in Town, which brings the characters of Julia Donaldson’s famous book to life, just before the school holidays come to an end. Full details of the coming season and how to book can be found online and from us here at Kids Love Cornwall Living.

Riveting reads from the bookshelf Our pick of the best books to curl up with this summer. WORDS AND YOUR HEART
Kate Jane Neal
“This book is about your heart (the little bit inside of you that makes you, you!)...” Join Cat and Pip in this beautifully written and illustrated story for children, as they explore the power of words and their impact on the world around us. Cornwall based author Kate Jane Neal makes a stunning arrival with her debut picture book, and joins the rare breed of storyteller capable of transforming deep human experiences into visual delights. Destined to become a classic!
ITCH
Simon Mayo Aimed at older children, Simon Mayo’s debut book is a knockout success! The story is set in Cornwall and follows young Itch, an accidentprone, science-loving, element hunter. After discovering a fascinating new element in the form of a rock his life is catapulted into a world of adventure, intrigue and thrills. The book itself is fantastic; the pace is fast and the storyline exciting and compelling, perfect for getting those reluctant readers eagerly turning the pages!
JINKS & O’HARE FUNFAIR REPAIR
Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre The fourth book from the team behind the much-loved Cakes in Space and Pugs of the Frozen North follows the adventures of Emily, who hatched out of a pale blue egg on Funfair Moon. Chaos strikes as the helter skelter has a bad case of gravity inversion and the ghost train has no ghosts! A fun-packed adventure for early readers, with gripping, humorous prose from Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre’s vivid illustrations.
THE ADVENTURES OF AUSTIN THE CORNISH MINER: THE RESCUE OF THE DWEEBLE STONE
Karen M. Hoyle
Have you ever wondered about all of the many magical creatures lurking around the mines of Cornwall? Austin thought the stories to be nonsense too, but boy was he wrong! This wonderful tale manages to combine Cornish charm with a bit of adventure and magic, and of course the odd pasty or two! The book is an ideal length for younger readers and the illustrations provide a fantastic accompaniment to the lovely Cornish storyline.

inding that moment for yourself in this busy world can often feel like an impossibility. Exploring an artistic passion or embarking on a dream career all too often slide down to the bottom of the priority list. Fortunately, there are now flexible ways to indulge your creative spirit, make new friends and begin a life with a little extra excitement. Whether you are interested in flower arranging, mastering a musical instrument, discovering how to cook a new cuisine, crafting your own jewellery or learning a new language, Truro and Penwith College’s part-time courses cater to all interests. Rosie Rotheram completed her Level 2 Gym Instructors qualification at Truro and Penwith College, and has since represented the College in the World Skills Trainer Competition, winning a silver medal. “The training I received through my course with Truro College has been fantastic, and the support from the tutors is second to none... I’ve gone from not really knowing what I’m doing with my life and no career prospects to being qualified in a specific job, winning competitions in my field and being offered jobs.”
Whistle while you work Of course an interest just doesn’t have to be a hobby; it can develop into a rich and fulfilling career. There are plenty of parttime qualification courses at Truro and Penwith College that have given people the start they needed to embrace a new and exciting stage of their working life. Courses in administration, accounting, HR, marketing, management, law, teaching and coaching mean there are plenty of opportunities to take the first or next step in your career. Nikita James wanted to further her education to enhance her career prospects, but in a way that fits in with her family life. The VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Specialist part-time course gave her the flexibility to work, study and be mum at the same time. “I’m now in full time work in a salon doing what I set out to do,” she explains. “It’s been brilliant to make lifelong friends and have great all round support from the tutors.” Whatever your passion, you will find inspiration and opportunities abound at Truro and Penwith College.

PAWS IN ST MAWES Take the dog with you on a luxurious stay on the Roseland peninsula with Portscatho Holidays.
O
n the Roseland, you can always be sure of a fantastic Cornish welcome and a fantastic holiday experience. The peninsula offers a great selection of restaurants and eateries, glorious uncrowded beaches, tidal creeks and hidden coves, pretty villages, subtropical gardens and superb accommodation. It’s the perfect place to explore and while away the days, making this secluded corner of Cornwall an incredibly popular visitor destination. With lots of dog-friendly beaches on the Roseland, including the National Trust beaches at Porthcurnick, home of the Hidden Hut (the UK’s most popular beach café for the last two years), Carne and Pendower, there is always a beautiful expanse of coast nearby for the dog to stretch its legs. The South West Coast Path provides miles of coastal footpaths with both short circular loops such as around St Antony’s Head with its panoramic views out to Falmouth and longer walks such as St Mawes up to Portloe or St Mawes to St Just in Roseland to see the fabulous village Church and Mrs V’s Teashop. As well as the beaches, the National Trust has several properties in the area such as
Trelissick Gardens. Another fascinating visit is the Caerhays Estate in Gorran. Cornwall has a wonderful array of dog-friendly attractions such as the Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Tintagel Castle among many others. Portscatho Holidays has a large selection of pet-friendly properties to suit all budgets. If it’s luxury you are after, then book a stay at Tregwylan, Sunny Banks or Spindrift; for couples there’s Penvar Cottage, The Old Forge and The Stables; and for families Charlies, The Old Bakehouse and Rosemary Cottage. Outside the main holiday weeks many of Portscatho Holidays’ pet-friendly properties are available for a long weekend or mid-week breaks, with flexible change over days. The Roseland is a fabulous place to visit if you’ve got four legs and a wet nose! So don’t let the availability of kennels dictate when you can have your holiday – bring your best friend on holiday to Cornwall with you.

From long sandy beaches and dunes just asking to be rolled around, to colourfully adorned walkways in some of the county’s most beautiful, scentfilled, dog-friendly gardens; Cornwall and dogs go hand in hand.

rom Rock on the north coast, where your dog can make the most of the low-tide-link to Rock all year round, to Praa Sands beach on the south – nearly a mile in length – which is dog-friendly except between Easter Sunday and 30th September, the Cornish coast offers acres of space for your waggly-tailed friends to sniff, bound, tuck and roll to their hearts’ content. Even in winter, when you’ve got your finest knitted attire pulled tight over several other layers, lacing up your boots and pocketing an old tennis ball or two is definitely worth doing. Head inland, away from the stormbattered fringes of the Atlantic and there are some stunning stretches of countryside to be discovered. The walk from Helston to Porthleven, for instance, past Loe Pool, offers stunning scenery for you to enjoy and huge expanses of woodland and grass for the dog Perhaps you (or your dog) have a passion for the world of flora, in which case the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Trebah Garden are both perfect, welcoming dogs with open paws. At Heligan, there’re more than 200
acres of beautiful grounds to explore and the four-legged ones are bound to enjoy the new smells of the Victorian Productive and Pleasure Gardens, the subtropical jungle and the ancient woodland. At Trebah, a ravine garden leads to a private beach on the Helford river, so paws can get as muddy, sandy and wet as they like! Poop scoops are available on arrival to take care of any ‘presents’, while the garden terrace and picnic areas are the perfect pooch-friendly spots in which to relax and refuel. Speaking of refuelling, many pubs around Cornwall understand the need for you to sit down for a cheeky pint with the pup after a walk and one of our favourites – the Pandora Inn, Mylor Bridge – is just the ticket if you fancy a stroll around the creek before enjoying your choice from the famous St Austell Brewery staple. There are lots of ways to make the most of Cornwall with your pooch, so pop the lead on, lace up your boots and get out there – you’ll find there’s plenty to be sniffed at (for the dog, that is)!

SUMMER
From the catwalks to Cornwall, the team at Truro boutique Bishop Phillpott talk us through the latest trends this summer.
A
ABOVE ì Stunning printed patterns BELOW î A beautiful jacket from Paul Smith
fter a few years of classic and simple designs, this season sees a 360° change as colour, prints and embroidery take centre stage and mother and daughter team Sharon and Katie just love it. “Weekend by MaxMara has gone tribal with the most beautiful and vibrant prints inspired by Africa,” explains Katie. With oranges, greens and browns combined in stunning printed full skirts and tops, the key to this trend is to keep the rest of the outfit simple. “We love the printed skirt teamed with a well-tailored white shirt, and the top is really set off by wearing with white denim. The collection also features boho chic dresses perfect for those hot summer getaways and beautiful embroidered jeans.” Sharon continues: “This season, denim has a really fun edge, and it hasn’t escaped the printed trend. One of our favourite and most wearable pairs of jeans from our collection this season is the Donna Ida Bobby Dazzler. This star printed jean is in a super flattering shape and really adds a fashion edge to any outfit with very little effort. Team with heels and a silk shirt for a fun outfit for a night out or team with a beautiful cashmere jumper and trainers for a twist on the sports luxe trend.” Paul Smith has embraced the gingham trend, but given it a modern twist that is less ‘little house on the prairie’ and more ‘summer chic’. Tailoring keeps this trend so wearable, with beautiful blazers and a gorgeous trench for those cooler summer days, they’re an instant update to your wardrobe teamed with your favourite denim. Why not visit the boutique in Truro to try on the latest styles yourself.

The pensions landscape The pensions environment has changed markedly, explains retirement planning expert Matt Begley, Managing Director of Harris Begley Financial Planning.
M
att explains: “Following the complete overhaul of the pensions system in April 2015, planholders aged 55+ can now draw down as much, or as little, of their defined contribution pension savings at any time.” This gives pension holders the flexibility to manage their own pension funds with the following options: leave their pension pot untouched; take out some, or all, as cash; purchase an annuity; opt for a flexible income, via a flexi-access drawdown scheme; or decide on a mix of these, which for example could deliver a guaranteed income for life, yet leave some funds invested in the hope of future growth. According to the HMRC Pension Freedom statistics report in January 2017, since the introduction of the pension changes, the first 21 months showed 1.5m payments being made, with £9.2bn withdrawn, equating to an average payout of around £6,100 per person. Some of these payments would be part of multiple takeouts by certain individuals, as at most 549,000 people over this period were responsible for releasing the £9.2bn from their plans.
“For example”, says Matt, “the first 25% of the pension pot will be tax-free, whether taken as one lump sum or as the first 25% of multiple lump sums, whilst the remaining 75% is taxed at the individual’s marginal rate. So drawing in excess of 25% as cash, could generate a sizeable tax bill and possibly push some into a higher income tax band. It’s also important that you seek advice so that you know if, for example, the ‘flexible’ returns of the income drawdown route may be a better option than the guaranteed income of an annuity.” Making the right decisions for your future can seem a daunting prospect. Harris Begley takes pride in offering a personal service that takes your individual circumstances into account. Get in touch for a free, no-obligation initial consultation to discuss your pension and plan for your future.
Navigating the tax issues Whilst every individual has a choice in how they take their pension, there are tax implications to consider and this is where it becomes vital that you take expert advice, to ensure you are fully aware of the opportunities and pitfalls.
TRURO OFFICE
IN THE KNOW The value of pensions and the income they produce can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. HM Revenue & Customs practice and the law relating to taxation are complex and subject to individual circumstances and changes which cannot be foreseen. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate taxation advice.

A feast OF COLOUR We pay a visit to Atishoo Gallery, a wonderful independent gallery in Charlestown.
A
lways keen to discover the best buys across Cornwall, we catch up with Liz Hackney of Atishoo Gallery to learn more about the popular Charlestown gallery. “We love colour at Atishoo Gallery,” says Liz, “and it influences our choices when it comes to choosing our stockists.” The starting point comes from co-owner Paul Clarks’ paintings, which are bright, quirky and large in scale, depicting happy coastal scenes with fishing boats and fluffy clouds in blue skies. “Everything else we sell needs to sit well with them,” continues Liz. “We are often told that walking into our gallery it always feels sunny because there is such a kaleidoscope of colour that it really hits your senses. We want to brighten your day even when the weather throws some Cornish mizzle at us, helped by our colourful floral displays outside.” Atishoo concentrates on only selling art, craft and homewares by British based artists, designers and manufacturers. The amazing local artist Alan Arthurs now has his own exhibition room in the gallery, with over 200 original paintings to choose from, starting from tiny little originals for £20 up to large detailed paintings of the Cornish industrial landscape at several hundred pounds. “Visitors come back year after year to add another Alan Arthurs painting to their collection,” says Liz. New this year is Atishoo’s tiny shed outside the main shop door. “It’s actually a gardener’s tool shed, but painted in a lovely coastal blue we like to think of it as our very own miniature beach hut. On sunny days we put some of our lovely new cushions, tea cosies and coastal signs in there, it looks lovely as you walk up the driveway. The coastal signs come from a West Country company and are designed by Martin Wiscombe, who adapts the artwork to incorporate local landmarks and place names. It’s great having a range of bespoke Charlestown products at such a reasonable price.” Also new this season is the fabulous Cornish fishing harbours collection designed by Cornish textile designer Zoe Wright, printed onto tea towels, mugs, aprons and tea cosies. Atishoo’s bestselling tea towel is the stargazy pie design which also comes with a matching apron. So if you’re looking for that special something for that special someone, why not pay a visit to Atishoo Gallery. It’s the perfect destination after a morning exploring Charlestown’s historic harbour.

O
f the five human senses many people value their eyesight most highly. Eye disease affects all age groups but is more prevalent in the elderly so, as the population ages, eye disorders are becoming more common. By 2050 the number of people in the UK living with sight loss is expected to double, to approximately four million people. Many common eye diseases have no symptoms in their early stages. Generally speaking the sooner a problem with the eye is identified the more effectively it can be treated, and regular checks with a high street optician every two years or so are important even if you don’t normally wear glasses. Optician’s checks are free for everyone over the age of 60, and under 18s if in fulltime education. People over 40 who have a close family member with glaucoma and those receiving benefits are also entitled to a free test. So, what can you do to look after your eyes? Will Westlake, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Duchy Hospital, provides some answers.
Don’t smoke Smoking is related to the development of macular degeneration, cataracts, worsening of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, thyroid eye problems, and blood vessel blockages at the back of the eye that can cause sudden complete sight loss.
Eat a healthy diet Eating well, with a high fresh vegetable intake, is especially important for people with macular disease. Vitamin supplements are available which are marketed to promote eye health, but surprisingly these have not been found to prevent the development of eye disease in people with healthy eyes and can increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers. They should only be used after discussion with a healthcare professional.
Avoid excessive sunlight exposure On bright sunny days wear a good pair of sunglasses with proper UV protection filters.
Take regular exercise Exercise frequently and try to avoid being overweight; these measures are particularly important if you have diabetes or glaucoma.
Consider any hereditary conditions We can’t choose our parents, but if we do have a family history of eye disease it is even more important to have regular checks and follow these other simple methods, since all the most common sight threatening problems run in families to some extent.

S
o it was when we journeyed to Porthpean a few weeks ago to stay in Bonny Alva, one of Helpful Holidays’ new flagship properties. A much needed and anticipated family holiday promised to be a week of sand, sea and fun in an area of Cornwall we hadn’t had time to explore in any great depth. Having moved down from Bath five years ago we are still discovering new corners of Cornwall that continue to delight and impress and Porthpean was certainly one of them. Situated on Cornwall’s south coast, set just back from St Austell bay, its sheltered sandy cove is ideal for rockpooling and paddling for the young and perfect for sailing and kayaking for the older, more adventurous members of the family. All packed up with wetsuits, kayaks and our two dogs, we set off on the hour’s drive, with our children chattering excitedly about the week to come. Bonny Alva sleeps nine in four bedrooms so we knew there would be plenty of space for our family of six – even with two teenagers in the mix! However,

it wasn’t space that was on our mind as we arrived, it was the view… and what a view it is. Our holiday home looked out across lush green lawns to the sea beyond, an uninterrupted vista of Cornish coastal landscape at its very best. Our delight didn’t wane when we eventually tore ourselves away from the view and ventured inside. The living areas were spacious and very comfortable. The benefit of a kitchen diner, with all mod cons, meant that feeding our hungry hoards after a day exploring the area was a sociable affair, with everyone clamouring to be the first to tell of their seaside adventures that day. Once fed and watered, the youngest of our four tended to retire to the den to chill out and watch a film, while the oldest could spread out on the leather sofas in the lounge. And as for us? Well, we had a little chill out area of our own as the master bedroom had French doors opening out onto a private balcony. From here we could sit in heavenly peace and gaze out across the clear blue water of the bay, a cold glass of Camel Valley in hand. You’re only a mile from the town of St Austell, should you need to stock up on essentials and the 18th century harbour of Charlestown, featured in the acclaimed BBC Poldark series, can be reached about a mile’s walk away along the coast path.
Should days out be on your agenda then a star-studded list of Cornwall’s top attractions are close by – the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project to name but two. For us, though, the week was all about some much needed rest and recuperation and the benefit of staying at Bonny Alva was that we didn’t have to venture far if we didn’t want to. It’s just a short stroll to the beaches of Porthpean and Duporth, which we did most days as the weather was kind. We did venture as far as Polkerris as we had heard great things about the restaurant there, Sam’s On The Beach. We dined in style on delicious pizzas for the children and steaming bowls of local mussels for us. At the end of a week spending some quality time together as a family we were sad to leave, although we knew we would be going back to work and school refreshed and revitalised with some great memories made – that’s what a Cornish cottage holiday does for you. Whether you are travelling down from out of county or, like ourselves, holidaying not far from home, Bonny Alva feels like a true ‘away-from-it-all’ destination. They don’t call it Cornwall’s Med for nothing!

“It just feels like a normal tooth. I can easily justify the cost to myself because I’m going to have this tooth for 20 or so years” LINDA
LIFE CHANGING DENTISTRY Stop worrying about your teeth and get on with your life
These days nobody needs to be troubled by their teeth. If you don’t feel confident smiling, if you have trouble chewing your food, or if you’d simply like to look “better”, then advanced dentistry treatments such as dental implants can change your life. Dental implants offer a permanent solution to missing or failing teeth. They can boost self-confidence and help people to smile again.
DENTURE STABILISATION
The highly trained team at Pure Dental Health in Truro has over 35 years combined dental implant experience and have placed over 6,500 dental implants to date. They are also capable of complex bone and gum grafting procedures that other clinics do not offer. Having attended hundreds of courses both in the UK and abroad, patients can receive the latest advancements in Implantology. You can be safe in the knowledge that your treatment is delivered by highly qualified professionals in a relaxing caring environment.
SINGLE OR MULTIPLE MISSING TEETH
FIXED TEETH IN A DAY A revolutionary approach which has radically changed the replacement of lost teeth. In suitable patients we can replace a conventional removable denture, remove failing teeth if required, place new implants and fix a full restoration all in one day. Avoiding the need to live with a temporary denture in between having your existing teeth extracted and the new dental implants placed. You will only require one surgical process instead of multiple ones. The shortened time means that the whole process is more cost effective than alternative methods.
Loose dentures can cause frustration and embarrassment in social situations and make it impossible to eat certain types of food, with detrimental effects to digestion and overall health. Usually with loose dentures people resort to using lots of denture adhesive, which can leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth as well as being cumbersome to clean. Dental implants can help to stabilise your dentures allowing you to eat what you like.
When you have lost a tooth, the equilibrium in your mouth is upset. If it’s a large tooth at the back of your mouth, you will start having to eat on the other side, which puts more pressure on those teeth. Over time this could cause them to break and be lost. If it’s a front tooth, this could have a massive effect on your self-confidence. Dental implants provide comfort, stability and are the closest thing to natural teeth. HOW COULD PURE DENTAL HEALTH HELP YOU? We offer free treatment adviser appointments where a highly qualified member of our team will make recommendations after listening to your personal situation. We also have regular offers on assessments. Why not contact us today on 01872 222404 to see how we can help take away your worry.

t Austell Brewery’s Charitable Trust has presented Cornish charity, Cornwall Hospice Care with £10,000 towards the refurbishment of two bedrooms at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle. The money will help fund the updating of the rooms and the two en-suite bathrooms, and the modernisation of disabled toilets within the hospice. St Julia’s is one of two adult hospices run by the charity and opened in 1999, with further extensions added in 2011. The phased refurbishment is aimed at ensuring they comply with stringent infection control standards and will also make sure they are fit for purpose well in to the future. Debbie Henshaw is the charity’s Legacies, Trusts and Grants Officer. “As a 24/7 charity providing intensive care for people with terminal illnesses, we need to maintain the highest standards in all areas, including the surroundings in which patients stay,” explains Debbie. “We’ve taken a phased approach to the refurbishment at St Julia’s Hospice, updating two rooms at a time. This very kind donation from the St Austell Brewery’s Charitable Trust will allow us to move forward with phase two and for that we are extremely grateful.” Micci Cooper is the Administrator of the Brewery’s Charitable Trust. “Nobody ever wants to experience the care offered by Cornwall Hospice Care,” says Micci, “but we all realise we need the two adult hospices in the county. It’s also rewarding to know that this gift will make a difference to a lot of people in the future.” Debbie Henshaw continues: “We hope the work will begin in late summer and will be completed in up to ten weeks. Fortunately we have spare capacity so we can update the two rooms while still keeping all eight of the intensive care beds at St Julia’s Hospice open.”
It’s rewarding to know this gift will make a difference to a lot of people in the future. MICCI COOPER
