urrounded as we are, on almost all sides, by the sea it’s not surprising that sailing is an inherent part of life in Cornwall – especially on the south coast with the port of Falmouth at its epicentre. Sailing, and in fact boats in all their forms, have always played a big part in my own life. Many a happy childhood day was spent with friends messing about in our little rowing boats off the beach at Cadgwith or joining my dad on one his many fishing trips, bringing home a haul of pollack for our tea. If we were really lucky, we would be able to grab a ride out on one of the bigger crabbers, and watch the pots come in filled with juicy crabs and lobsters. Those formative days on the water gave us a taste for adventure and independence, but also a healthy respect for the sea. When we progressed from rowing boats to sail boats, there was no such thing as ‘proper’ sailing tuition. In those days, we adopted a very Heath Robinson’ approach to our first taste of sail, pretty much teaching ourselves by trial, error and a lot of capsizing! As my own children reach the same age, they are now afforded the most fantastic opportunity to learn to sail, being taught the essential techniques by experienced instructors…and all for no cost.

Helford River Children's Sailing Trust

Helford River Children's Sailing Trust

The Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust (hrcst.org.uk), an RYA training centre and a member of RYA OnBoard, was set up in 2005. With an experienced team of adult volunteers, Senior Instructor, Martin Fenton and his team provided lessons for more than 850 local children last year aged between 8 and 1 . These children came from local primary schools, special schools, children excluded from education and, for the first time, a group of home educated children. The trust’s ethos is that there should be no financial barrier to any of their activities and by giving children and young adults in Cornwall access to sailing and other water activities, they can develop confidence, competence and resilience. We head to the Helford every Wednesday evening where Martin is a familiar, smiling face at each of the sailing sessions: “Our aim is to grow not only the sailor but the person. We tailor our sessions to the individual

COVER FEATURE | sailor, matching a small group of children to a particular instructor who will get to know each school child and young adult’s needs.” I have experienced this first hand, watching my son go from being a complete novice, not knowing a stern from a bow, a tiller from a mainsheet, to excitedly volunteering to helm a Pico during a brisk easterly out on the Helford and taking part in the fantastic annual school’s regatta. It’s not always plain sailing though as Mike Comyn, Chief Instructor, explains: The environment we work in can be challenging in itself. We go out in all types of weather and sea states, varying the lesson to the conditions and finding a sheltered cove to operate from. By listening to instruction, within the safety net we create, a child is able to overcome basic fears. By doing so, he or she is given a belief in instruction. This belief and trust can then be transferred to the classroom, home and future work environment.” The Helford River is for all. If you are from a poor background in Cornwall you are very unlikely ever to experience the beauty of this wonderful place. We who work the estuary everyday, have no doubt about its impact on our lives and we love to share. We meet children who live less than 10 miles from the coast and yet have never been to the beach! They have no concept of its beauty or how to interact with the sea safely. Our job is to remove these barriers.” To help remove these barriers further the trust was delighted to announce earlier this year that it had been awarded a grant in excess of £1.6m that meant they could start work on an inland water sports centre at

Trevassack Lake. This disused uarry will enable year round watersports for all as well incorporating adapted holiday lodge accommodation for children with severe disabilities. There will even be a oating classroom allowing young people of all abilities to get out on the water and view marine life through underwater cameras and onboard screens. You don’t have to be resident in Cornwall to take advantage of this amazing opportunity as the trust also offers holiday sailing courses for visiting children. It is grass roots opportunities such as this that are helping to grow our budding sailors here in Cornwall. From here, children have gone on to captain super yachts in the Med, race in some of the world’s most prestigious yachting events or become sailing instructors themselves. It’s clear that discovering a love of the water at an early age in Cornwall opens many doors, and for some young people it has been the driving force to study marine related subjects at Falmouth Marine School (falmouthmarineschool.ac.uk).

With a school on the site dating back as far as 1825, tutors now combine industry experience with academic expertise to offer courses that include boatbuilding, marine engineering and science and alumni regularly secure prestigious jobs within the industry, both across the UK and beyond. Falmouth local, Ben Davis, secured the position of Wing Manager for Ben Ainslie’s America Cup team, thanks to his expertise in boat technology gained at Falmouth Marine School, while Tom ackman, who is now working as a Chief Engineer on super yachts, is enjoying the career he always dreamed of while travelling the world. The marine science course has helped students progress to some of the most prestigious marine based academic institutions, but also includes a range of non academic practical skills that are often considered to be essential for progression. These range from diving, snorkeling and powerboat handling through to aquatic husbandry, photography and marine mammal observation. Former student, Clare Marshall, completed an FdSC in Marine Science at Falmouth Marine School and is now a Plankton Analyst for the Marine Biological Association: “Falmouth is the perfect location to study marine biology. With the River Fal and several beaches a stone’s throw away, it makes for the perfect outdoor classroom.”

BUYING A BOAT

If you’ve got the sailing bug and want to invest in your own boat then speak to the team at Ancasta International Boat Sales (ancasta.com) who have offices in Mylor and Falmouth.

So, what does all this mean for getting out on the water in Cornwall? For me, it’s essential that the next generation of budding sailors, water sports enthusiasts and marine students are inspired at a young age so that they can continue Cornwall’s sailing heritage and keep Falmouth and its world renowned sailing waters firmly pinned on the chart. Without this infrastructure we wouldn’t retain the top class boat builders, marine companies, marinas and yacht clubs that we see today. If you’ve not had the opportunity to learn to sail at a young age then are many other ways you can become involved. The Cornish Maritime Trust (cornishmaritimetrust. org) is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of Cornwall’s maritime heritage, operating three historic working boats – Barnabas, Soft Wing and Ellen – and training people in the associated skills of sailing, restoration and maintenance. on members are welcome to sail as a guest but the best way to experience these incredible boats and support the trust is to become a member. Whether you are an individual or an organisation, you can immerse yourself in days gone by in these historic 19th century sailing vessels. For a modern introduction to sail, or if you’re a novice seeking tuition, then Cornish Cruising, (cornishcruising.com) based at

Constance

Falmouth’s Yacht Marina, offers a complete charter, cruising and training centre, with RYA courses available in sail, powerboat and motorboat. You can spend even more time aboard by booking a yacht charter holiday that will see you discovering Falmouth’s world class sailing waters as well as the unspoilt creeks of the Helford. However, if hoisting a mainsail fills you with fear and an easy life is calling, then Gweek Classic Boatyard’s (gweekquay.co.uk) 50ft Victorian launch, Constance, affords 19th century luxury on the water. You can cruise the Helford in style while sipping on a glass of bubbles or taking afternoon tea, watching the water, bird and marine life pass by. Cornwall affords everyone the ability to get out on the water and celebrating sail is something we do very well here – if you’re a Cornish sailor or a visiting yachtsman then Cornwall’s annual sailing regattas and events are sure to be already in your diary. Falmouth Week (falmouthweek.co.uk) has grown from

THE DRAW OF THE ESTUARY We speak with luxury property agents, Rohrs & Rowe, about what makes the Camel Estuary area such a popular location for buyers.

K

een to find out more about what makes this fabulous part of the county so popular with those buying into Cornwall, we catch up with Martyn Rohrs and Matthew Rowe, founders of prestigious and award winning luxury property agency, Rohrs Rowe. Martyn tells us Having enjoyed particular success on the south side of the estuary, at the start of this year we have sold every property that we ve had listed in the area. We have even received offers on some off market properties too. Many cash buyers are looking in the Camel Estuary area for property priced between , and M! The supply of good property to the market is generally low this year, so we are needing more property to supply the demand! So what makes the area so popular? Matthew and Martyn point out that easy access to ew uay Airport is a very big draw, especially with the new daily Heathrow ights being added and the better links via the improved A now giving easier and faster road access, but of course, it goes deeper than that. adstow and the wider Camel Estuary area has become the foodie capital of Cornwall, with celebrity chefs such as Rick Stein, aul Ainsworth and athan Outlaw each having multiple restaurants that draw people from across the country, using some of Cornwall’s finest local and home grown produce. The area is also abuzz with many other well regarded and up and coming restaurants and eateries, meaning the availability and general standard across the board is very high indeed. But it’s the superb coastal lifestyle on offer here that really tips the scales in the Camel Estuary’s favour. There are so many activities for both children and adults alike to get stuck into, from surfing to just spending leisurely days on any one of the many glorious beaches. Sailing, boating and waterskiing can be enjoyed on the estuary itself, as well as S , kite surfing and coasteering. The beaches on both sides are among the best in the country, with the renowned Seven Bays stretching from Trevone to orthcothan on the adstow

side, Tregirls and Daymer on opposite sides of the mouth of the estuary and then olzeath just a little to the north. Each is as beautiful as the last, but offer something different; between them, you’ll find long stretches of golden sand and crystal clear waters. Aside from these beautiful beaches, if you like to lace up your boots and head out on foot, you’ll find that the area has some outstanding coastal walks to offer, with dizzying views over the Atlantic and estuary from the South West Coast ath and the tang of salt in the air that promises to work up a hearty appetite no bad thing given the prestige of food on offer here! For those who enjoy a round of golf, again, the area is very well served. Trevose Golf Country Club offers three courses of outstanding coastal links. These include The Championship Course, which is ranked and voted as one of the top links courses in the British Isles. On the Rock side, you’ll find St Enodoc Golf Club, which has been voted in the top 2 golf courses in the and provides beautiful, undulating links with mesmerising views out across the Camel Estuary. There really is no better way to enjoy a leisurely 18 holes (or 1 , if you decide to make an afternoon of it!). Whatever it is you need to know, between them, Matthew Rowe and Martyn Rohrs bring a wealth of local knowledge to the table, having successfully sold many of the best houses in the area. Matthew finishes We know all of the benefits and lifestyle this area has to offer and, with our uni ue, bespoke marketing tools, we show each of these and our clients’ properties off to their full potential, adding saleability and, often, extra value. So, if you’re considering a move to Cornwall or have a property in the Camel Estuary area that you’d like to sell, Rohrs Rowe are perfectly e uipped to help.

LEFT Make your family escape at St Ives Holiday Village

This has seen us take away a section of old chalets each year and replace them with brand new lodges, with the last phase being completed early this year. With so much having been invested in the park, and with St Ives only gaining in popularity as more and more Brits look to home soil for their annual holiday (particularly after last summer!), these lodges enjoy consistent occupancy, making the final phase of lodges an excellent opportunity. Indeed, as Mark puts it “Demand is always strong, which is why we only have three twin lodges with hot tubs left to buy! The new lodges are stylish and contemporary, designed with the modern holidaymaker in mind and featuring high spec kitchens, luxurious showers and beautiful wrap around balconies. Some lodges even feature hot tubs for the ultimate indulgence, allowing you to return from a day exploring Cornwall’s beaches and coastline and sink into the soothing waters of your very own hot tub.

This was a lovely park even without the investment in brand new lodges! Anyone purchasing with a view to sub letting should know that St Ives lets particularly well, thanks to it being one of the most renowned locations in Cornwall. It draws thousands of people every year to make the most of clear tur uoise waters, white sandy beaches and the brilliant variety of bouti ue shops, galleries, caf s and restaurants. As an owner, you’ll have the option to retain full usage, sub let enough weeks to cover your site fees, or sub let the majority of weeks, which can go some way to recouping part of your investment. How you manage your lodge is versatile too, whether you decide to do it yourself, let the ohn Fowler team take care of it for you, or a bit of both. This means that your dream of owning a Cornish holiday home could be closer to reality, and easier, than you think! So, if you’ve been on the lookout for a holiday home investment, in a prime location to enjoy one of Cornwall’s most highly coveted destinations and therefore with excellent sub letting opportunities, a trip to see ohn Fowler Holiday arks’ St Ives Holiday illage comes highly recommended.

Take a metaphorical leap of faith off the south west tip of Cornwall and discover a scattering of emerald isles amidst the rolling Atlantic.

E

nsconced amongst the Isles of Scilly archipelago is sub-tropical Tresco. Taking ‘Cornish cool’ to another level, Tresco’s infectious coastal culture fosters a unique way of life led by the soothing rhythm of the changing tides. Life’s not only a beach, but a beach to yourself even during the height of summer (without a colourful windbreak in sight!). Fine white sands are punctuated with sparkling crystal shallows, which become alluring horizons cradling the hypnotic forms of other nearby islands. With a range of accommodation available, you might choose to stay in a cedar-clad house perched just above the tideline, or a granite cottage hidden within woodland. On Tresco, the beach is your back garden and this unique, privately-owned island is your playground. Hire bikes and cycle the near-empty paths from coast to coast, or get lost within the labyrinth of lush green terraces at the worldfamous Abbey Garden, positively brimming with exotic plant life that would be incapable of thriving just 28 miles northeast, on the mainland. Alternatively, opt-out of island adventuring altogether and instead enjoy an

afternoon’s pampering at Tresco Island Spa. The Isles of Scilly draw foodies from around the world. Fuel lazy, hazy Tresco days with holiday feasting, dining on fresh local seafood, wood fired pizzas, classic pub fare and decadent desserts. From local ice cream, to Tresco Abbey Garden gin (sold exclusively on the island), to a weekly produce market, there really is no excuse not to indulge. Explore the rugged coastline on foot, or enjoy an aquatic excursion to other nearby islands. ou’ll find that no two days on Tresco are the same. But, no matter how you spend your day, be sure to stop at dusk and immerse yourself in the peach and fuchsia tones of an island sunset sky. There really is nothing like it.

SEASIDE LUXURY

The Falmouth Hotel provides everything you could wish for from a holiday by the coast.

S

ituated on the seafront overlooking Falmouth Bay and Pendennis Castle, The Falmouth Hotel is perfectly positioned to make the most of your holiday in Cornwall. For those of you travelling from afar, the proximity to the ocean will instil an immediate sense of awe and serenity with access to the sea from castle beach, just a hop and a skip away. The prospect of waking up in your comfortable room, sipping a cup of coffee on the balcony and then wandering across the lawn to the cool and refreshing waters of the ocean for a morning swim is too tempting to resist, as an avid sea swimmer myself I can honestly say there is no better way to start the day. Having painted this introductory picture of what a holiday at The Falmouth Hotel allows you to access; let me elaborate on the finer details. The Falmouth Hotel, also known as the ‘Grande Dame of Falmouth,’ first opened in 18 . Its castle like ictorian architecture, spacious interiors, fantastic seafront location and award winning food has ensured its place as one of Cornwall’s best known hotels. Over the years, the hotel has retained a character and sense of style that welcomes you into ‘another world’ the

moment you walk through its doors. This world is full of ictorian grandeur, spacious comfort and devout personal service alongside the modern touches of state of the art showers and stylish interior design – allowing the hotel to retain its appeal in a more informal age. As far as the surrounding area goes, the hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of two beautiful beaches. Castle beach is well known for its rock pools, teaming with life and providing children and adults alike with the chance to discover the fascinating ecosystems that reside within. Then, when the tide submerges these mesmerising worlds, grab your snorkels and glide amongst fronds of seaweed and kelp with different species of fish weaving in and out of view. ust a five minute walk down the road, Gyllyngvase beach provides an altogether different experience. This beach has golden sands perfect for building sandcastles, plus Gylly Beach Café, which serves both gourmet meals in the restaurant and chips and ice creams from its beachfront kiosk. There’s also the WeS paddle boarding centre, which allows you to witness this stunning area of Cornwall from a new perspective.

Or, for the avid walker, you have the chance to join the South West Coast Path and walk to the neighbouring beaches of Swanpool and Meanporth. The nearby town of Falmouth (also within walking distance) has pasty shops, bars, restaurants and artisan cafés in abundance, as well as the Maritime Museum for those rainy days and a regular ferry service to neighbouring St Mawes. With so much on offer, a holiday in Falmouth is sure to be full of incredible experiences – the harbour itself welcomes navy ships and cargo ships thanks to its famously deep waters, and the Carrick Roads is world renowned for its sailing, with the potential to charter yachts and explore the surrounding creeks and hidden coves. Then after your day of exploration, however you choose to use it, head to the Falmouth Hotel Spa for a relaxing treatment that will soothe your adventurous muscles and prepare you for another day by the coast. If you would prefer to enjoy a night

in at the hotel rather than venturing out for food, The Castle Beach Restaurant provides a mouth watering menu of locally sourced produce, including a selection of the finest fish Cornwall has to offer and perfectly cooked meat, with a tempting choice of vegetarian and vegan options to boot. All in all, The Falmouth Hotel provides holidaymakers with the chance to escape to another world, a world filled with ictorian grandeur, seaside escapades and views that will quite literally take your breath away. There’s only so much one can say about such a place, because really it has to be experienced to be believed, so make sure to book your stay and discover this seaside oasis for yourself.

experience DEFINING AN

é MAIN Each Charteroak site is chosen for its appealing locale

BELOW Do you think the Charteroak Experience could be for you?

A

We catch up with luxury lodge developers, Charteroak, and ask them to define the ‘Charteroak Experience’.

s a developer of high quality holiday lodge developments, Charteroak recognise that they provide an exclusive proposition in the marketplace very different to those sites offering lots of shared amenities like swimming pools and tennis courts. Instead the focus for Charteroak has always been to create their own unique experience with an emphasis on three principal elements, which they believe are important to their customers. First of all the sites themselves are chosen for their appealing location, in areas where people would like to have a second home, but more importantly for the actual physical environment of the site itself, whether that embraces wonderful views, proximity to water or complete seclusion. Allied to this is the way the schemes are developed with an emphasis on well-conceived native planting and the introduction of streams and bodies of water to provide the best micro location and aspect for each lodge.

Charteroak are also a developer for whom quality prevails over quantity, priding themselves on creating developments with a much lower site density than many other locations. This means a Charteroak lodge provides greater privacy and outside space for you and your guests to enjoy. The final but all important third point is the focus placed on the lodges themselves. By nature Charteroak have always been keen to push the boundaries of lodge development, seeking to positively innovate and enhance the product they offer. Lodges have been around for some time now but by looking to innovate, Charteroak wants to create more forward thinking lodge designs, anticipating and then providing what the customers of today expect, plus one or two added features they might not! This is best illustrated by the indulgent luxury of the iSpa™ with its integral spa facilities and private cinema room, or the Sky Terrace, with its elevated deck making so much more of the panoramic views of the Cornish countryside.

Charteroak’s Sales Director, Sam Weller, tells us: “We work with great partners, be they contactors, landscape consultants, architects or lodge manufacturers; they are all vital ingredients in helping to deliver the Charteroak Experience. We are extremely grateful for their continued support and the important contribution they make to what we deliver.” The result of all of the above is a holiday home that provides a significant sense of space, an environment your lodge feels a part of and a home designed for you and with amenities just for you. That is the Charteroak Experience.

Awarded ‘Five Star’ status by Visit England, Landal Gwel an Mor is not your average Cornish holiday resort!

C

ornwall’s warmer seasons, particularly in the last few years, have been exceptional, extending well into September and even October! At this time of year, things tend to quieten down at Landal Gwel an Mor as families head back home for the start of the school year. That makes it the perfect time to make the most of another Indian summer – whether you’re retired, planning a quiet romantic break or escaping to Cornwall with young children. The available holiday lodges come in three types: Residence Eco, Lakeside and Scandinavian. If a large sun deck, outdoor furniture for al fresco dining, sun loungers and a hot tub sound like your idea of holiday heaven, then we highly recommend the Residence Eco Lodges, which sleep six with prices starting from £499 for three nights. Alternatively, if you’re picturing your romantic break sleeping lakeside, with views across the millpond and with everything you need for a romantic, balmy-evening barbeque, then the Lakeside Lodges are definitely for you. Sleeping two, prices to stay lakeside start at just £105 per night! That just leaves the Scandinavian Lodges. Sleeping five to six and available in five different types, many have hot tubs, many have log burners; some even have both! All benefit from barbeque stands, complemented by outdoor furniture and staggering sea views, and each is situated in beautiful landscaped gardens,

so they’re a pleasure to spend time in. With rates starting at £359 for three nights, why not enjoy a getaway with friends, the Scandi way? A number of lodges are dog friendly, which means your waggy tailed friend needn’t be left behind, and some offer high-end assistance, offering superb disabled access. As if all this wasn’t tempting enough, the resort’s on site facilities are also excellent. Feadon Farm Wildlife Centre – great for adults and children – is home to a number of rescued animals, with experiences including falconry, hand-feeding rescued foxes and stroking the reindeer brothers. Alternatively, why not go on a night walk and watch badgers from the Hide? There’s also the Wellbeing Spa, a heated swimming pool with sea views and a gym, plus a golf course inspired by some of the world’s most famous nine holes, a coarse fishing lake, and an indoor play area that’s perfect for tiny ones with over 2,000 square feet of soft play, slides and climbing walls. In short, Landal Gwel an Mor has everything you need for the perfect, five star escape. The best part is that if you quote 'CLC19' when you book, you could get up to £100 worth of free spending money, so be sure to get in touch!

FROM BURFORD

n e d r u B to Making the transition from life in the Cotswolds to life in Cornwall.

H

usband and wife Ian and Jane Moore, along with their two children and Ian’s father Robin, made the move from Burford in the Cotswolds to Penrose Burden to run seven beautifully restored luxury cottages near the north Cornish coast. As soon as they arrived they fell in love with their chosen location. “Although the buildings needed a lot of work, the position was absolutely gorgeous, looking straight down the Camel Valley. It's so quiet, tranquil and unspoilt, we immediately knew that we’d come across something special,” Jane tells us. The previous owners had already converted the barns from farm buildings to holiday lets, however the initial renovation was carried out over 40 years ago so their was still a substantial amount of work to undergo before the cottages were up to the standards that Ian and Jane aspired to. “We essentially started again, from new roofs and windows to kitchens, bathrooms, new plumbing, re-wiring, insulation and all the mod cons that we had come to expect on our own self-catering holidays.” What’s brilliant is that the couple have managed to add in these luxurious touches whilst maintaining all the charm and character of the traditional

Cornish barns, including features such as stone oors, exposed beams and thick stone walls. With walks galore on both moorland and coastal paths and the famous Camel Trail on your doorstep, there’s more than enough to keep you active. Equally, the unbelievably pictures ue fishing village of ort Isaac, setting for Doc Martin, is nearby. All of this is easily accessible, as well as Padstow and Rock, both foodie havens in their own right, with Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth and Nathan Outlaw’s restaurants to enjoy. We are now in our first full year after opening fully in August 2018 and are enjoying it immensely, it’s brilliant to meet so many new people when they come to check in and even better to welcome some back already.” So there you have it, a brief introduction to the newly converted luxury, four Gold Star self-catering cottages near the north Cornish coast. Providing the perfect base for your Cornish adventures.

Merchants Manor offer a sustainable travel experience… ALEXA POORTIER

According to Rastella’s Chef atron Hytlon Espey Food miles don’t only add to our carbon footprint, they rob us of avour, freshness and the potential an ingredient has. Having joined the Slow Food Movement’ and being fortunate enough to receive some of the best produce in the Duchy, of the meals served to your plate are supplied from producers here in the south west. In fact, some dishes on the menu are made solely using ingredients foraged within a mile of the country house hotel. As a nod to their hardworking producers, the Rastella menu features a food map, highlighting the provenance of ingredients. No greenwash here! With over wines that are local, organic, vegan and or biodynamic and over 1 fair trade spirits, guests can enjoy a tipple without making such a ripple at the Rastella bar, where an evening cocktail before dinner is a must. If tea is more your thing then why not try a Tregothnan blend, handpicked and grown just a few miles down the road. Breakfast has seen the typical morning O ’ banished in place of a locally pressed apple juice from olgoon estate, removing the carbon equivalent of driving a car to Bali and , glasses of water from irrigation. We can all identify with some of the more obvious choices in becoming environmentally friendly such as the

banning and reduction of single use plastics, paperless o ces and recycling. There is no watering down the truth when it comes to some of the inspired choices made by the team at Merchants Manor. “For us it is still very much a journey and while far from perfect, each day we strive to improve in all we do, ick explains. Founder of itmustbe OW.com, Alexa oortier, comments Merchants Manor offer a sustainable travel experience and delight guests by being thoughtful to their needs and their health, providing uni ue local experiences and a high standard of comfort. They value their team and together, they are mindful of their local impacts and care about communities and the environment. They are conscious of not being wasteful and trying to reduce, reuse and recycle their resources; and they consider the life cycle of purchases and work with suppliers with similar values. They’re making a positive difference by stepping up and leading by example, being honest and showing progress.”

Pop to the local Whether you want to spend some quality time with just the two of you, or take the family for a pub lunch or dinner, The Portreath Arms is perfect for all occasions. Thanks to its location, it’s within easy distance whether you’re on foot or two wheels. Natalie tells us: “We love the Portreath Arms and have seen it transform in recent years to the pub it is now, and it’s still transforming now!” Head to the beach The beach at Portreath is, quite simply, a ‘must visit’ for everyone, including dog lovers, beach goers, swimmers and photographers. There is a seasonal dog ban there between Easter and October, from 7am until 7pm, but outside of those dates and hours, it’s very much a haven for hounds! The view from the top of Tregay Hill is breathtaking, especially on a warm, clear day. ou’ll find a shop here with everything you need for your day’s supplies, several good pubs and two restaurants beside the beach car park, all offering great food at reasonable prices. The sandy beach is loved by families, so much so that you could easily spend the whole day there. Stretch your legs The walk from Tehidy Woods to Deadman’s Cove begins through the Tehidy Country ark wildlife area and is home to famously friendly s uirrels, but be sure to keep your dog on the lead! The route follows through Tehidy Woods to Coombe before crossing the Reskajeage Downs to reach the north cliffs near Deadman’s Cove. From here, follow the coast path along the top of the steep cliffs to Basset’s Cove before re entering Tehidy County ark, passing through the bluebell woods of the North Cliffs Plantation and completing the circular route.

Stay in style Completed to the most exacting standards, each cottage at North Coast Holiday Cottages offers the utmost in holiday luxury, and many even enjoy their own hot tubs! What could be better than rounding off your day exploring the wild north coast with a nice soak in your own private Jacuzzi, with a glass of something chilled in hand? Each cottage also has wonderful views, and the lush vista of Cornwall’s rolling countryside is tough to beat with your morning coffee! Relax and unwind For many, escaping to Cornwall is more than just a holiday; it’s a chance to retreat from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, so a quiet location hidden in the Cornish countryside is near, if not at, the top of their list. Thankfully, orth Coast Holiday Cottages is tucked away in its own tran uil pocket of north Cornwall. It’s perfect for that ‘away from it all’ experience and yet, being within easy access of the A30, it’s ideally placed to enjoy all the fantastic attractions that Cornwall has to offer. It is, of course, also close to some superb beaches and, whether you’re looking for water sports or a walk along the South West Coast ath, surfing or a go at coasteering, you can enjoy all of this and more before retreating to the quietude of your own countryside cottage.

A CORNISH ESCAPE Introducing Cornwall Hideaways, a new holiday letting agency based in Polzeath.

é MAIN One example of the many stunning views you can expect

C

ornwall Hideaways opened its doors at Trebetherick House near Polzeath earlier this year. As a sister company to well established holiday lettings businesses, Rural Retreats and Norfolk Hideaways, Cornwall Hideaways is well equipped to ensure you enjoy the perfect holiday. Every property is managed and looked after by a dedicated team with a wealth of local knowledge, so you can get all the help you need throughout the entire process, from the planning, to the holiday itself. At the time of launch, Cornwall Hideaways had a portfolio of 40 marketed properties, offering the best possible choice of holiday homes in Cornwall, including secluded cottages, luxury coastal hideaways and even lighthouse keepers' cottages! So, whether you’re after a cosy bolthole for a romantic weekend away, or a larger property that can fit the whole family, you’re sure to find it. The agency aims to not just provide holiday breaks, but also to promote properties throughout Cornwall, offering owners a service that ranges from marketing only, to a fixed rate, fully managed service. This can include changeovers, laundry, recruitment and training of housekeepers, plus an out-of hours emergency helpline.

James Boyce, Director of the Hideaways Group, tells us: “The success of Norfolk Hideaways has inspired us to create a similar business in Cornwall. It’s a hugely diverse county offering something for everyone, whether you’re a couple looking for a weekend escape, or a family looking for a bucket and spade summer holiday. Many of the properties are dog friendly, suitable for young children and perfectly located for a range of activities such as sailing, cycling, surfing, bird watching or walking. Now with 70 properties from Tintagel to Fowey to Penzance, Cornwall Hideaways aims to have over 100 properties in its portfolio in time for the 2020 season. With a wide range of benefits, including no sign-up fee, a local team to guide you through the lettings process, unlimited owner weeks and free professional photography – let Cornwall Hideaways help you maximise your home's potential.

RIGHT Penzance has a brim-full calendar of cultural events

S

et to take place between 18th and 22nd September this year, the idea for FestWest PZ came from the opportunity of hearing concertos on the Hall for Cornwall’s Steinway piano, which is currently being housed in St Mary’s Church on Chapel Street in Penzance while renovations are carried out. Bringing together IMS Prussia Cove, Tim Boulton, Tim Dean, Penlee Theatre, The Acorn and Exchange Penzance, this new festival is supported by Penzance BID and hopes to become an annual highlight! Penzance has been synonymous with the arts over the centuries, with a history of nurturing innovators and creative talent. Thanks to its stunning coastal backdrop, beautiful architecture and maritime history, it provides the perfect setting for a celebration of the arts. There are events in venues across Penzance, including St Mary’s Church, Penlee Theatre, The Acorn Theatre and St John’s Hall, with a line-up of international stars including IMS Prussia Cove, who are renowned for understanding the fruitful relationship between nature and music, and the inspiration that this part of Cornwall can offer to both artists and audiences. Many of the world’s leading soloists have attended IMS’ seminars and acknowledge how much their playing owes to the magical in uence of time spent in Cornwall, and former students and participants of the seminars can be found among the leaders of some of the world’s greatest orchestras! This year’s productions include Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Debussy’s

Estampes, Haydn String Quartet’s Op. 77 No. 1, and Thomas Ades’ The Four Quarters. Highlights of a strong recital programme include Susan Tomes, Charles Owen and Dominic Degavino, plus the Castalian and John Law Quartets. If this sounds like your idea of festival heaven, you’ll be pleased to know that Penzance is home to a superb selection stays, so you can pick the perfect base from which to enjoy all FestWest PZ has to offer. Whether your taste demands a luxury guesthouse, a self-catering cottage, countryside bed and breakfast or a boutique hotel, you’re well catered for here. And, when it comes to sating that inevitable sea-air appetite, Penzance has been described as ‘Cornwall’s new foodie capital’. Indeed, it’s become well known for superb food and drink, hiding some of the region’s most exciting pubs and restaurants in tucked-away locations along its historic streets. Tickets, which are available from £9, with concessions available for those under 25, can be purchased online or from the Box O ce at The Minack Theatre. A WALK

e m i t h g u o r th Step through the unassuming doors of the Museum of Cornish Life for a truly breathtaking surprise!

é ABOVE Discover the many and varied exhibitions on display at this fabulous Cornish museum

I

f you're out and about exploring Cornwall and are looking for the perfect all-weather attraction to entertain everybody, in the market town of Helston, you’ll find the Museum of Cornish Life, offering a fascinating insight into the area’s rich tapestry of history and heritage. The building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837, with two separate buildings – one for butter and eggs, the other for the meat market. Today, it retains the original sloping oor, which adds to the authenticity of experience as you wander back in time to the Cornish days of yore. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost in the disaster, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. Head inside and you’ll immediately find that the museum contains a vast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers agriculture, local trades and industries, as well as law and order,

town history, home life, toys, sporting equipment, gardening, transport and health and leisure activities. Indeed, the sporting display features the famous Bob Fitzsimmons who, heralding from Helston, made boxing history as the sport’s first three division world champion. The Victorian Classroom, meanwhile, provides a fascinating (and, indeed, eye opening!) insight for children, to see what life was like for pupils all those years ago. The museum boasts the best costume collections of the south west, also offering a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, meaning that there’s usually something new to be found every time you visit. With a team that firmly believes in learning as a life-long process, if you're hoping to brush up on your Cornish history, a trip to Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life comes highly recommended.

THE RECUMBENT

You may have seen them from time to time in Falmouth, whizzing past and leaving you thinking ‘what’s that?’ Chances are it’s an ICE trike.

W

DID YOU KNOW? Powerful electric motors let you explore more, ride further and faster without even breaking a sweat. Electric Assist makes trike riding even more accessible and inclusive for all kinds of cyclists!

e catch up with Phil, from ICE’s Design and Marketing team, to find out more about the world of recumbent cycling. ICE has led the trike industry since 1999, making, designing, and pioneering in Falmouth, Cornwall most of what you’ll see in today’s recumbent industry. But why ride recumbent trikes? Well, hil explains, They are a relaxed, e cient, stable, fun and very comfortable way to cycle! Riding a trike, for someone who has not ridden a bike or thought they never could again, can really change their lives. In fact, some test riders get quite emotional when they realise they can ride again. New riders always return from a test ride with a huge smile on their face.” With a trike, hil continues There’s less impact on your neck, back, shoulders and, most importantly, your bottom, as there is no narrow saddle involved. On a regular bike you need padded shorts, gel seats and you’ll still end up walking like a cowboy at the end of your ride! ot so with our

TOP TIP Whilst the ICE team always recommends riding with a flag on the roads, their riders tell us that when trike riding, you get much more room on the road than you do riding a regular bike. You look different to other cyclists so motorists tend to give you a much wider berth.

trikes. Trikes are great for physical fitness and injury rehabilitation too, and are adaptable for any number of uses, whether you’re going on a touring adventure, an expedition, even commuting! Since 1999, ICE has made its mark around the world with a range of trikes catering to different riders’ needs. Phil elaborates Some trikes are very uick, sporty and race orientated, ideal for the road bike riders who want something different but fast. We also have other sports touring models, for those who still want to cruise the open road but are in search of practicality, features and comfort.” He points us to the Sprint Tour model, which, with its sporty ride, comfort and medium height seat position, is incredibly versatile. Indeed, whether you’re carving bends, pushing your speed, or on a long distance tour, the Sprint Tour is one for all seasons. Then there are ICE’s Adventure touring trikes. These, hil tells us, are still sporty, but offer more of an upright seating position, making them a great choice for long distance cycle touring. The Adventure model combines rugged looks with unrivalled practicality and comfort, and it’s primed for cruising the open road, discovering hidden trails and, as hil puts it, exploring new horizons. If you’re hoping to explore Cornwall’s country roads during a weekend ride, with a rider weight limit of 1 kg, the Adventure is for you. ext we have the Full Fat’ ICE’s expedition level, off road, go anywhere’ trike. This is where things get really interesting (as if they weren’t already!); when we say go anywhere’, we really mean it. In fact, in 2013, Maria Leijerstam on a Full Fat trike became the first person in the world to cycle to the South ole from the edge of Antarctica, covering over km! The record still stands today. Five years later in 2 18, with the help of ICE,

atalie Wilson triked over , miles around Britain to raise awareness of Ehlers Danlos Syndromes, while Tanya oble, who had never ridden a trike before, took the Island Hopping Mad’ trike adventure around the ’s 2 islands, covering more than miles in 42 days and raising funds for Mind UK. Not to mention that in the same year ICE’s T Race Trike became the fastest in the world, winning the Human Powered Vehicle championships in ent! There are six models in the ICE range, covering a whole spectrum of cycling re uirements. Recumbent cycling is becoming more popular all the time, particularly in the SA, Canada and Europe, where people are realising the simple comfort and easy ride that comes with a trike. ICE Trikes this Summer will be at Countryfile Live, Blenheim alace, 1st to th August and The Cycle Show in Birmingham, 1 th to 1 th September.

SELECTION Based on Plymouth's historic Barbican the Victoria Sewart gallery displays a varied array of jewellery from across the UK.

E

DISCOVER MORE Victoria has teamed up with the Cornish Seal Sanctuary to sell charity jewellery pieces made from ghost nets that featured in Victoria’s recent Falmouth exhibition, ‘Entanglement’. These will also be available to buy online.

stablished in 2006, Victoria Sewart Jewellery was one of lymouth’s first contemporary jewellery galleries and stands out from the conventional crowd, stocking extraordinary and inspiring work from British designers to fill both the gallery and the online shop. Victoria trained as a jeweller and designer at The School of Jewellery in Birmingham in 1991, and founded her jewellery business soon after. Having completed her Masters degree in 2005, Victoria’s work changed direction and she began to make sculptural fine art pieces. This inspired her to establish a gallery to showcase her own work and that of her contemporaries. Collections range from traditional materials with precious metals and stones to contemporary ones including acrylics, stone, aluminium and recycled materials. Several exhibitions this year have caught our eye, including ‘The Summer Exhibition’, featuring ten new designers to the gallery and a variety of collections. Ranging from the sculptural work of Cornish designer Stephanie Johnson and Scotland based Dominika Dupcova, to delicate festival inspired pieces created by Mim Best. “There is a huge amount of talent and skill right across Britain and the south west,” Victoria explains. “We are extremely proud to be able to represent and showcase the very best local designers who are continually committed to creating outstanding and imaginative work.”

It’s not just the artists who are well represented, customers are treated to a personal service from friendly staff who are all jewellers themselves, and who possess a huge amount of knowledge between them to help you find the perfect item. Whether you’re looking for a birthday gift or simply a treat for yourself; through the gallery it’s also possible to buy a totally unique item straight from the artist's studio. You can even work with one of the artists to create a bespoke item of jewellery to your personal specifications. The gallery has grown in reputation over the years and customers now visit from all over the world. If you want to have more of a personal touch, you can always take part in one of the popular workshop classes held in a studio above the gallery and make your own jewellery. There’s even the possibility of making your own wedding ring!

ADVICE |

HERE TO We talk to Georgie White and Amy Wood, owners of professional administration management firm, White Woods, who are leading the way in freeing up business owners’ time.

help

What kind of administration support do you offer? “We take care of all the tasks that you struggle to find enough time for anything from filing receipts, organising your emails or booking appointments, to processing payroll, answering en uiries or constructing reports. Whatever the nature of your business, we ll learn your processes to fit in seamlessly. We work from our own o ces in Helston and connect with businesses all around the world, as if we’re sat just next door. Can you tell us about your latest projects? We’ve had lots of exciting projects to get our teeth stuck into. Some of our favourite challenges have been creating an entire holiday booking system using only Excel, writing blog posts and newsletters, and creating or re vamping websites. o two days are the same which is what we love most!

WHAT THEIR CLIENTS SAY… “I have worked with Georgie and Amy for several years and cannot recommend them enough; they are professional, smart and have on more than one occasion found solutions to problems when no one else could. I have never known them not to go the extra mile. They are utterly dedicated, resourceful, quick to get the job done and in addition they're great people who we have enjoyed working with immensely.”

What skill sets do you each bring to the table for prospective clients? We’re incredibly proud of the range of expertise within our team. We’re meticulous when it comes to admin some of us are more creative whilst others are methodical with numbers. We all play to our strengths and it’s our enthusiasm to learn new things that makes it work so well. For many, it’s difficult to admit that they need help… How do you know when you need to start delegating tasks? The key is realising that you need to stop trying (and failing) to find time for all those mundane tasks you never get around to because something else takes priority. They’re the ones you should be delegating to somebody else.

What services do you offer your Superyacht clients? Exactly the same services as every other business the only difference is that these ones move! They can be in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and we’re still able to connect with them every day. We help with a variety of crew tasks such as payroll, ensuring their documentation complies with regulations and arranging their travel to and from the vessel. What are the benefits of choosing your services instead of hiring a new member of staff to carry out those tasks? We take care of your tasks for a fraction of the cost of hiring your own full time assistant, giving you time to focus on the things you love the most. ou only pay for the actual time we spend on getting those tasks done. There’s always a member of the team around to ensure a seamless continuation of service, and you’ll have access to the right combination of skills needed for the job.
