Cornwall’s own Rosie Crow set to release debut album
orthle en is e cited to e hostin its first e er hristmas mar et this o em er
“Somewhere between Siouxsie and Cyndi Lauper having a sing off with Kate Bush” is how Q magazine described Cornish artist Rosie Crow, whose debut self-titled solo album is about to hit our shores.
In case you didn’t already know, we at Cornwall Living love our base in Porthleven. Strolling around the archetypally Cornish harbour at lunch time and looking at the fishing boats reminds us not only of an industry that has bolstered Cornwall’s economy for centuries, but also of the stunning coasts that we’re fortunate enough to have lying on our doorstep.
Set for release with a launch show on 12th November at the Acorn Theatre in Penzance, Rosie captures the feeling of confusion surrounding a break up; the anxious unknowing of what happened and, more importantly, what happens next.
With this in mind, we’re excited to announce Porthleven’s first annual Christmas market, which is set to be held on the harbour head on 19th November, from 10am to 4.30pm. Anyone who’s visited Porthleven before may have witnessed the pop-up markets that regularly adorn the quayside in the warmer months. These markets are brilliant for residents and visitors alike who are looking for something unique from some of the best local arts and crafts vendors and make for a pleasant afternoon spent by the sea, browsing a wealth of quirky and bespoke wares.
The piano based singer-songwriter has a “knack for pop hooks and an uncanny ability to find a heart-wrenching melody”. If you like well-crafted pop music then, we promise, you’ll love this! Before going solo, Rosie’s band Rosie & The Goldbug toured all over Europe and the US, with the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Brett Anderson, Carl Barat and other big names – an impressive resume for the promising Cornish star. To celebrate, shortly following the release, Rosie is booked for a show at Gylly Beach Cafe, Falmouth, on 20th November where those lucky enough to make it will get a taste of her emotionally addictive music. What’s more, Gylly Beach Cafe and its delectable menu – featured in this issue on page 90 – has plenty more reasons for you to visit. For more information visit www.rosiecrow.com or to find o t more a o t ll each a e turn to page 90
Unfortunately, as the cold winds of winter start blowing in from the Atlantic, we’re re always sad to see them go, which is why we’re so excited to see this first of its kind, winter e ent take place! isitors will find a wide ariety of stalls, offering a vast array of wares, from art and handcrafted Cornish products and stunning handmade ewellery to pi a and stocking fillers So, while there are plenty of events to get excited about this festi e season, orthle en s first Christmas market is one that’s not to be missed.
in in the l es with elston aw s We here at Cornwall Living are thrilled to sponsor the Helston Hawks, depicted here proudly donning their new kit. David Page, team coach of this up-and-coming, plucky youth squad says: “We are starting to see the signs of a really good team emerging which is helped by the fact they feel prepared in their kit.” Ecstatic to be playing in quality team colours, the Hawks are beginning to prove quite the formiddable force on the local football scene. Since starting the season on 10th September, the team are truly beginning to meld as an e cient goal scoring machine f course, we like to think the new kit has something to do with it! And, with the rest of the season ahead of them, there’s plenty to be excited about. So come on, Hawks – do us proud!

e all need a change from time to time, and what could be better than making some changes to the place we retreat to after a long day at work, or long walk on the beach? Whether it’s bringing some extra warmth into our homes for the cold winter months, turning a sitting room into a peaceful haven or adding a bit of oomph to brighten a tired space. And... living in Cornwall brings its own design ideas from the wonderful natural colours that surround us, to the fabulous light beloved by artists of all kinds, and the spectacular storms and ever-changing seas. I talk to some of our favourite designers and retailers about new trends for 2017 and also to get some top tips when thinking of updating a room or whole property. But sometimes it’s just really hard to know where to start… So, whether you are starting from scratch doing up a holiday let, styling your new home or just fancy a bit of a change, read on for some of the latest ideas and a kick of inspiration!
Coastal Living I catch up with Louise Ingram and Caroline Saulsbury from Mint House Interiors, a company based in Cornwall that is gaining quite a reputation for its practical approach and sympathetic design style. “We get involved on all sizes of projects, from redesigning a single room to a overseeing a new build or complete renovation of an older property… actually we love to get involved right from the start!” Louise tells me with a grin. Their enthusiasm is catching and I can imagine they would be very easy to work with. They use a lot of muted colours for their interiors and Louise suggests layering different natural colours, soft greys, blues and shaded whites. She grins again, “Oh and natural wood, we use a lot of wood. It’s all about balance really, masculine and feminine, soft and hard, yin and yang! So, in one property, we installed a really sleek white kitchen with lots of sharp lines then used a gorgeous, sandblasted wood table in the centre for dining – it was the perfect balance in the room.” Caroline advises that if you use lots of soft cosy

fabrics in a room then you could add a hit of leather somewhere as balance. “And, with smaller properties think about having integral carpentry; so… built-in bookcases, shelves, storage and so on; it will look like it belongs, has always been there and make the room feel bigger; put the TV and sound system on the wall. Then add some gorgeous lighting, one or two statement pieces. The whole room should look like it has evolved; pieces that have been collected rather than being all matchy, matchy!” She smiles again, “Oh and lots of natural wood… or did we mention that!” For more about Mint House Interiors go to page 31. www.minthouseinteriors.co.uk Wonderful wood So more about natural wood… and if, like us, you love Grand Designs on Channel 4 then you will have seen the highly-acclaimed episode featuring om a eld and his wife anielle, and their fabulous steam bent house, hidden away in a beautiful piece of Cornish woodland. In fact, I have never seen presenter Kevin McCloud, who

can at times be quite cutting, more enthusiastic and complimentary about a house… he absolutely loved it! t om a eld they ha e been making handmade steam bent furniture and lighting in the woodland workshops by their home since 2008. Tom tells me: “Each of our products is handmade by skilled craftsmen. We use the traditional craft of steam-bending wood to create pieces that will be harmonious in the spaces of their owners for years to come.” Their award-winning ranges combine locally grown timber where possible (all their wood comes from sustainably managed woodland) with the low energy process of steam-bending, so for the environmentally conscious amongst us they come pretty much guilt-free too! We think that if you are going to change the look of a room by adding one statement piece this year it probably should be from om a eld www tomra eld com

What’s hot and what’s not in 2017 Liselle Milner, Interior Design Consultant at Cotton Mills, tells me her tips for 2017: What’s hot: “Terracotta… if you’ve been thinking about ripping out your terracotta tiles you might want to think again. Terracotta is coming back in a big way in 2017 with a wide range of coral, brass and copper tones coming through in the latest fabric collections as well. Forest green… this is a colour that has been distinctly absent over recent years but in a few months’ time will be absolutely everywhere, particularly on furniture in a plush velvet. So indulgent… so gorgeous!”
And what’s not: “Subway tiles… this trend has boomed over the last couple of years, making it a victim of its own success. Expect to see them replaced with some stunning fish scale tiles o er the coming year Copper accessories… despite the rising trend of copper tones in fabrics, the metallic copper finish on accessories is set to be one of the shortest interior design trends of recent years suspected to disappear entirely in 2017.” www.cotton-mills.co.uk

P
erched on the Cliffside of Cornwall’s stunning north coast sits the impressive Mother Ivey House. ailable for the first time since 1939, this house offers a truly spectacular place to live. The surrounding coastline has been proudly named an Area of Outstanding Beauty, as the views from this 19th century masterpiece accentuate on a daily basis. And what with the north coast s finest stretch of beaches, the bays for days , and the beautifully unspoilt headland peninsula the Trevose Head, this surrounding area has a nonstop supply of coastal walks, surfing and superb food Padstow, the nearby bustling harbour side town, is a mere stones throw away and offers an abundance of hotels, restaurants and boutique shops. If this isn’t enough to tempt you into the local area then the choice of world-class beaches, excellent watersports and local arts and crafts should be. A ferry also provides a regular service, across the Camel estuary, to the waterside village of Rock, which boasts a Michelin starred restaurant and prominent sailing club. Rock is also home to the challenging St Enodoc Golf Club but if you don’t want to travel for your round of golf there is an equally stunning course at Trevose, which utilises breathtaking views of Constantine and Booby’s Bays as a backdrop to your game.
Originally built 150 years ago, Mother Ivey House is now in a prime position for refurbishment or redevelopment. The backdrop is there, you just need to perfect the house to your preferences. There is an ample supply of rooms to play with, ranging from a sitting room with an open fireplace, a dining room with a solid fuel burner, a study/library and a garden room. There is also a kitchen, which is fitted with an for extra cosy e enings pstairs you will find fi e bedrooms each with a beautiful sea view, which again emphasises this truly captivating location. This house also highlights what a wellplanned renovation can achieve with its brand new triple garage/workshop complete with a grass roof to blend in with the peaceful surroundings. Indeed, from rugged cliffs to long strips of golden beaches this location really does need to be seen to be believed as no amount of words can fully describe this scenic place to live.

R
arely do we discover a property that offers as much potential – both as a second income and as a perfect family residence – as Millstream Orchard. Yet there it lies, located on the site of a former apple orchard in St Issey, just three miles from the bustling fishing port of adstow So what makes this property special? Firstly, the double garage provides ample parking – a rare luxury in north Cornwall! Then, there are the three bedrooms. While the master enjoys its own en-suite, all three have two built-in, double wardrobes as well as satellite television points. Downstairs, bask in the stunning, bright sunroom, from which views can be enjoyed out onto the picturesque gardens via the French doors. Into the kitchen, with its clean layout and authentic brickwork, and there’s plenty of room to eat, drink and be merry. Upstairs, when the sun’s shining, the spacious balcony boasts awesome views of the gardens and countryside beyond, making Millstream Orchard as much a holiday destination as a family home. Then there’s the annexe. With its own independent entrance, open-plan living space and shower room, this living space is perfect for late teens who ha en t uite own the nest but need their own space. Complete with a well fitted kitchen, two radiators, satellite television and telephone point, this annexe makes for the perfect start to adulthood for
those eager for a taste of independence. Alternatively, it’s the perfect for elderly relatives, or perhaps a holiday let. Set in around one and a half acres of pristine formal gardens, there is a real Cornish feel to this property. The gardens, which stretch to the stream boundary, comprise a semicircle patio with a curved Cornish stonewall and extend to lawns with fruit trees. What’s more, the adjoining paddock offers a variety of outdoor opportunities, with the mature woodlands joining it to the ‘Saints Way’ path – an ancient pilgrim walkway running through the paddock and onto adstow With numerous sandy beaches a mere stone’s throw away along the rugged north coast, Millstream enjoys the best of the county’s landscapes as well as close proximity to the popular market town of Wadebridge, ust fi e miles away So, while there are many reasons to move to north Cornwall, opportunities like this are unfortunately few and far between and it’s fair to say, this one really needs seeing to be believed!

icture thick wooden beamed ceilings, cushy furnishings and typically Cornish surroundings. Wrap all of this in a Cornish granite shell and place it in the popular village, Stithians, and you’ve got Elm Cottage. Having been renovated and extended cleverly to a meticulous standard whilst maintaining the charm of the original Cornish build, this wonderful property gently infuses the old with the new, subtly blending handmade wooden windows, oak doors, skirting boards and beams with bespoke double glazing and under oor heating There’s a real family vibe about Elm Cottage. There are gardens to both the front and rear of the property, so the kids can burn themselves out and, with fi e bedrooms, there s e en room for the grandparents over Christmas! From inside, on a breezy autumnal afternoon, you can gaze out into rural Cornwall knowing that the convenience of town is just a short drive away. And, for a taste of the high street, you can head to Falmouth or Truro for two very different shopping experiences. Falmouth, with its boutique shops, arcade-style vendors and student scene feels a very trendy town in which to shop, whilst Truro, Cornwall’s
capital, boasts the most high-street names in the county. Don’t forget to swing by the Hall For Cornwall while you’re there – there’s always something worth seeing, especially the wonderful productions put on by the local schools! What’s more, while it might be tempting to simply curl up on the sofa and get lost in a book, for those who want to get out and explore, there’s plenty to see. Burncoose Nurseries and Gardens lie just a short drive away, with 30 acres of woodland garden to stroll through. And then there’s Kennall Vale; a stunning Cornish woodland that still bears the fascinating-fragments of Cornwall’s industrial history, this walk offers a breathtaking and equally refreshing jaunt beneath the trees and along the river. So, if waking up to the sound of nature is your dream but you need easy access to the convenience of civilisation, it’s time to book a viewing at Elm Cottage and let the adventure begin.

Out & about
tumn review Auproperty The professionals over at Philip Martin have compiled a quick and informative overview of the residential property market in 2016.
T
he two major factors affecting the housing market this year won’t come as any surprise: the decision to leave the EU and the change in the stamp duty tax. What will come as a surprise is the fact that the market up to the end of October has been one of the best years we have seen in ten years. Despite the challenges faced this year we have continued to see the housing market move locally due to the economic factors of demand and supply, demand has outstripped supply and it continues to do so. During 2016 the market below £250,000 has remained strong, demand is good due mainly to affordability from a wide range of buyers, from first, second and third time buyers, to those downsizing and those seeking retirement. The buy-to-let investors had been very active up until April and, whilst through May to June these investors held off, throughout the summer and into autumn the Philip Martin team have noted a steady increase in these buyers coming back into the market. “The market over £500,000 has improved remarkably compared to 2014/2015 and we have seen a surge of sales in high-end quality properties across Cornwall during this year”, explains Sean Johnston of Philip Martin.
he first six months of this year, from January to June, were superb and the start of the New Year is always busy. Sellers often wait until spring but by then half of the year is almost over. We are advising potential sellers to start the process now in readiness for marketing their properties rather than waiting until spring 2017.” Estate agency has changed in recent years and the increasing importance of the Internet is clear for all to see. Although the Internet is a great shop window there is still a real need for local property professionals. Trusting someone with your property is vital and it is one of the most important decisions you will make when selling. The Philip Martin team loves building a relationship with their clients and the psychology of selling properties. Understanding this is the key to good business and trust is everything – if trust is lost, everything is lost.

ressers are often overlooked when decorating your home. But why let paintings steal the focus when you can have a beautiful, multifunctional piece of furniture as your statement piece. A dresser is a freestanding piece of furniture, so when you move home, your dresser moves with you. But where in your home could you beneďŹ t from a dresser The kitchen dresser is a beautiful and practical addition to your kitchen while maintaining a homely, traditional look that can add charm and character to your home. Inside your kitchen dresser you can include open shelving that can display plates, traditional teacups or even a cake stand. And, of course, no kitchen storage is complete without drawers in which to place tea towels and cutlery. Your dresser can be made from a mix of natural wood and painted in the perfect shade of paint from Farrow & Ball. A lounge dresser can be made in two parts, with a sideboard below and a cabinet above. In the lounge you may be looking at having a glazed display cabinet, ideal for
displaying your prized possessions. The sideboard can then be used for personalised storage, as you will be able to choose how shelves and drawers are arranged. You could incorporate your at screen or your turntable and vinyl collection for example. Make your bespoke dresser work just for you. If you love having friends and family round for dinner, a dining room dresser can ensure your evening goes swimmingly by having everything conveniently at hand. The sideboard of your dresser can also accommodate the serving of dishes and deserts and could even include a drinks cupboard. Designing the dresser to meet your preferences makes all the difference. If you are doubling up your living space with your workspace, then some creative thinking can incorporate a lot of useful,

Sitting
e l y t s in
Whether you are in the market for a sofa, an office chair or the everfashionable dining chair, Julian Foye will ensure you are sitting comfortably.
A
re you sitting comfortably? These familiar opening words were broadcast every day by Daphne Oxenford and Dorothy Smith, former BBC presenters for Listen with Mother, a programme of stories, songs and nursery rhymes for the under fi es, which began with the, now iconic, phrase – “are you sitting comfortably, then I’ll begin”. Today, Julian Foye answers that question by providing an array of seating options, from modern o ce chairs to riser recliners, that ensure you’ll never sit uncomfortably again.
Cool and contemporary sofa ranges can feature the latest technology, such as a USB charging cable, which can be cleverly incorporated into the seat, discreetly placed between the seat and back. These sofas can be made to measure and are available in a wide range of fabric and leather choices as well as a choice of armrest designs. So getting the perfect sofa for your needs has never been easier. How many styles of seating do you use in your daily life? How long do you spend in these seats? You might be surprised to learn it’s estimated most people spend about one third of their time in a seated position! Seating is incredibly important and making sure you pay attention to good posture and sitting properly can help to prevent future spine problems. It is always worth investing in the support of your health as well as your happiness. But health support doesn’t stop there. If you need a chair for aid with health or mobility you can rise, recline or snooze with a power riser recliner, helping you maintain your independence in comfort and style. Spending the day at work doesn’t mean you ha e to sacrifice comfort he team at ulian Foye pride themselves in the range of smart o ce chairs which combine mobility with comfort to create a chair with the perfect adjustable seat, ensuring you complete a hard day’s work in both comfort and luxury. Julian Foye’s range is available to view online or instore in Truro, St Austell, Wadebridge and ayle, so there are many ways of finding that perfect reason to sit comfortably.

f you’re looking to deck out your dream home in Cornwall there is one standout family-run carpet and ooring specialist that you simply must try. Whether you are giving your beloved manor house or barn conversion a facelift, looking to inject a new contemporary edge to your waterfront holiday property or simply offering up some tender loving care to your private cottage or townhouse, Alfords Carpets & Flooring has got something to suit every taste and every budget. A young and dynamic husband and wife team, Mark and Melanie Alford opened for business in the summer of 2015. They have invested heart and soul into this venture, including building their showroom themselves from scratch using their exceptional talents. As their plans came together, Mark drew vision from his illustrious 17-year career in carpets and hard ooring including his post as head fitter at the highly respected li er Son of Helston. Its closure led Mark and Melanie to take a leap of faith and go it alone to emulate the level of service people had come to expect from li er s while exceeding its ooring range “When a family business grows organically out of a genuine passion and skill the customer is always assured quality and
commitment,” says Mark. “This is a principle by which we stand. We really come to understand each and every one of our customers, and our success is down to their impeccable taste matched by our impeccable finish elanie adds, ark has worked hard to bring personality, life and atmosphere to living spaces of all kinds across Cornwall for so many years. It wasn’t a hard decision for me to join him in business; I did some really intense product training and together we now provide a service that really is second to none.” It takes a gold standard reputation, a warm welcome and exceptional customer service to make people recommend a business and to come back through its doors again and again. The thank you cards spilling onto the doormat each week and the reviews coming through their website are testament to the fact that this family business has got it right. Keep it fresh
From consultation to completion, Cornwall Tile Centre and Studio One Bathroom take care of it all w o rd s by :

e all know that current interior design trends can be hard to keep up with, if only because we haven’t all got the skills required to simply pull our house apart and start anew. hat s more, simply finding something that s fresh, up-to-date and in-keeping with what’s hot and what s not can be di cult, especially as we start browsing through the overwhelming range of options now available on the market. Don’t be put off though, as Cornwall Tile Centre and Studio One South West have everything you need under one roof when it comes to your bathroom and tiling needs. It’s not often you ll find such a concise ser ice in
one place; proprietor Mark Fowdon recognises the need for a service made easy. Having originally trained as a plumber, Mark has now been supplying and installing the highest end bathrooms and wet rooms all over the south west for the past decade. At the heart of the company is a business ethic that strives to meet and beat your requirements, with a design that is both functional and stunning to the last touch, whatever your style and budget. Incredibly, Studio One is able to use computer-generated 3D visuals to give you a complete, virtual guided tour of your future room, displaying the products that you’ve selected from an international wealth of leading bathroom and tile manufacturers. And, once you’ve bought the solution to match your dream redesign, the team will even arrange the installation for you, ensuring a complete, hassle-free experience. In eye-opening showrooms, you can peruse at your leisure, taking in the finer details of concept bathrooms, current design trends, as well checking out the extensive range of ceramic and porcelain tiles. A unique collection of handmade tiles and mosaics, in addition to the Tile Italia UK brand are all exclusively available at Cornwall Tile Centre, offering you the chance to deck your new room with something genuinely unique. Standing out from the plethora of tiles and designer bathroom ideas is the Dwell range, from Atlas Concorde – the deep soul of contemporary design. We’ve picked some of our favourites for you to get excited about.

WALL TILES Go for something a little more rugged, selecting from the range’s three-dimensional textured wall tiles, which create sculptural effects for bright walls that combine an intensely decorative effect with gloss glazing to create something intense, deep and brilliant. Walls of any size can be transformed into the focal point of your interior design, bearing that desirably sleek yet stand-out-from-the-crowd urban, contemporary look. SHOWROOM Also from the Dwell is the Showroom range; bright and honed, the colours of these porcelain tiles cascade through a range of grey hues, creating a refined pro ect of contemporary style that is sharply broken by the brilliance of the turquoise covering. Resistant to colour fading, these tiles are exposed to sunlight during the manufacturing process, meaning your love for the hues in these tiles will never fade. RECEPTION Beautifully modern, the Dwell Reception range provides a striking porcelain surface that is soft to the touch and enhances any elegant, contemporary space with the shiny effect of spatula-applied resin. This is an ideal option for the creation of youthful, architectural spaces. As well as the Dwell range, Atlas Concorde offer a spectacular range of 3D ceramic wall designs, ranging from the subtle to the standalone.
Spectacular in every pattern, these designs are truly enviable, with options well suited to each area of your home. RIBBON Our favourite is the Ribbon effect. Soft and sinuous, the wave effect given by this design is perfect for the bathroom. In fact, animated by light and shadow and reminiscent evocative of soft and intense waves, this pattern is well suited to any room of a house that’s inspired by the sea and, in Cornwall, what could be more appropriate? Whether you’re in the midst of a refurb or simply like to browse, take a trip to Cornwall Tile and Studio One South West. With so much to offer under one roof, with show rooms in Liskeard, Wadebridge and Plymouth, there’s bound to be something to inspire your inner interior designer, no matter where you are in the south west.

We sit down to talk with Pierre of PB Maintenance to learn about his company and life-affirming travels.
w o rd s by :
Annie Cowen
P
ierre Barrie, founder of PB Maintenance, has a history more frequently seen on the screen than in the journal of a Cornwall based maintenance company. Growing up in London he grew to know and love the industry from his father’s company. He followed suit, managing building sites in the chic areas of Kensington, Chelsea, Notting Hill, Hyde Park and Sloane Square. While he loved the work, Pierre needed to experience something new and so he hit pause on building and travelled for four years through Mexico. During this time he stayed with shamans in the Sonoran Desert, was hospitalised and almost died after the sting of a white scorpion in ‘Valle de Bravo’ or Valley of the Brave, was asked telepathically by the taxi driver not to die in his cab, felt the spray from the blowhole of a sperm whale in the Atlantic ocean, went tree diving in Guatemala, danced with indigenous tribes for ‘Dia del Muerto’ or ‘Day of the Dead’ and helped to make pavement art for ‘semana santa’ or holy week. So we think it is safe to say he experienced something new! After all of this Pierre came down to Cornwall and started PB Maintenance, safe in the knowledge that we have seagulls instead of scorpions. The business covers a variety of services, including side extensions, garage conversions, roofs, kitchens, decking and driveways. The team is made up of fi e professionals, who are either family or friends, whose vocations cover gas, electrics, carpentry and building.
Being in Cornwall, PB Maintenance also specialises in designs to help increase profitability in sales and or rental with special reference to holiday homes. So if you have a holiday home that could use the renovating touch of a man who survived a scorpion sting then look no further. Pierre is still looking to the future with hopes of excitement and new experiences as he talks of his business plans, “one of my big dreams is to open a retreat centre for meditation retreats, yoga holidays and holidays for autistic young people and their families”. But in the meantime you can still rely on PB Maintenance for an expert and friendly service whatever your needs may be.

Little Piece of Cornwall brings Cornwall’s finest independent retailers all together in one place, offering the many people who hold Cornwall close to their hearts the chance to savour it, wherever they may be, with products delivered direct to your door. Discover more Cornish makers like Laurie McCall on the website.
aurie McCall is a Cornish artist who creates bold and bright pieces in a range of mediums. Laurie’s work often holds a graphic quality stemming from his training as a graphic designer at Falmouth University. Being a keen surfer, working from his rural studio near erranporth, aurie s art is often in uenced by the coast, nature and the sea. His ‘Surfscape’ series invokes the dreamy surf conditions of his favourite Cornish beaches. His collection of simple wave images breaks down the shape and form of ocean waves into basic patterns of line and colour, resulting in unique pieces of contemporary art. Laurie also enjoys working in collage to create abstract compositions. Using found paper, vintage books and magazines, his collages combine contemporary ideas with materials from the past, giving rise to interesting visual juxtapositions. As well as selling his work at art and craft fairs across Cornwall, Laurie has just joined the recently launched Little Piece of Cornwall marketplace, finding himself in good company among the county’s many creative talents. He also takes on commissions, so feel free to contact him with your ideas. Where are you from and what do you do? I grew up on a farm in Perranporth but recently moved to Feock. As a keen surfer, beach lover and artist I like to create idealistic images of my favourite parts of the Cornish coast in a vibrant and unique style. Tell us one thing that inspires you more than anything about living in Cornwall. It has to be the sea; it changes all the time. One day it can be wild and unforgiving and the next it can be tranquil and still. The changing

conditions, light and weather are a great source of inspiration for me, I could stare at the sea for hours! Why did you choose to sell through Little Piece of Cornwall? I thought it would be a unique opportunity to get my work out there, in front of a wider audience. It’s great to be able to sell my work alongside other Cornish made products. o ld o rather fi ht one horse si ed sea ll or sea ll si ed horses I’d have to say the horse-sized gull – one beak has to be better than 100, I’ve seen what those things can do to freshly bought pasty! What does the future hold? I hope to continue expanding my art business whilst staying here in Cornwall, drawing more beaches and creating more collages.

everal years back, an imaginative young woman had an innovative idea for a fantasy children’s book series following a group of young friends’ antics at a school of magic. The hapless, reluctant hero faces the challenges of growing up, tested friendships and mastering the art of potions and magic. After several rejections from major publishers, the first no el was finally taken on Since then, these books have gone on to be translated into multiple languages, have been adapted for screen, and are beloved of millions of children around the world. While it may seem obvious who I’m talking about clue her first initial is , you might be surprised... Long before a certain Harry Potter came on the scene, ill urphy was creating a storm with her trailblazing Worst Witch series, featuring ildred ubble

llustrations courtesy of ill Murphy and Walker Books
Why did you choose to live in Cornwall? Some friends of mine came to li e and work down here and when I came to visit them I fell in love with the place and never wanted to li e anywhere else y fa ourite place is the Camel estuary. I try to swim half a mile every day but my best thing is to go walking on the beach between Rock and Daymer Bay and taking the boat to Padstow for lunch at The Basement Café. It is an inspiring place to live because the land and the sea are so beautiful. It is just the place for taking long walks and thinking up stories. First of all I mull around an idea for a good story, things that happened to me as a child or watching things happen to my friend’s children. Then I write down the story and start to work out where the illustrations will fit
Which element do you enjoy the most – writing or illustrating? “I always wrote and illustrated from before I can remember. It was the only pastime that I really enjoyed. It has been like breathing for me, so wonderful and natural. I enjoy them both but sometimes I write a story such as the book that has just been published, Meltdown! It is set in a supermarket and the whole book is full of trollies which has driven me mad to illustrate
Who is your favourite creation? ildred ubble is one of my fa ourite characters from The Worst Witch because she is based on me when I was at school, also rs arge in her eternal uest for Five Minutes’ Peace from her boisterous family
Tell us about your connection to Falmouth University. “Falmouth University kindly made me an honorary fellow several years ago. I was incredibly proud of this honour, especially as I was not good at getting exams at school so recognition from such a wonderful university was uite mind blowing
“Jill possesses that wonderful, rare gift – delighting both children and parents with her colourful, unvarnished accounts of everyday family life”
Are there any new projects in the pipelines?
What advice would you give to a budding writer or illustrator?
“There are several at the moment. First of all Meltdown!, which has just been published with Walker Books. It is about a naughty rabbit called Ruby who is having a tantrum in a supermarket trolley and she is not allowed to eat the cake which has been bought for tea later. There is also a CBBC TV series of The Worst Witch scheduled for anuary

As astonishing as the photo is, Mike didn’t spot the face at first and it was only after it was pointed out by a customer that the photo got its name o mark the uni ue moment, the gallery has created a limited run of x inch metal prints so you can take a lifetime to decide if what you see is a tender kiss between sun and sea or the face of the sea god Neptune. he second shot is truly touching as it comes with a heart warming backstory ike wanted to capture a wa e image for the day his daughter was born. “She was due on th ecember so on st ecember thought would try and get in e eryday until she arri es, and on rd took this one in a million wa e photo… and Coral was born the next day, days early his really highlights the rewards of such dedication to capturing the moments of the sea and allows e eryone to share in the magic it pro ides!

hen it comes to bikes, the staff at Bike Chain Ricci really know their stuff – apparently, they even talk bikes in their sleep! The teams at both Mount Ambrose and Bissoe have a combined and concise knowledge about the design, build, reparation and tuning of bikes and bike parts for all cycling disciplines. What’s more, they’ve helped others learn to cycle and to progress their skills and are proud to have been the founders of One and All Cycling club, who continue to use Bissoe as their meeting location. Bike Chain now sponsor Saint Piran cycle team (SaintPiran.cc), the Bike Chain Ricci race team and the recently formed Youth Academy. So, it’s no wonder the team eat, sleep and breathe bikes! ead to ike Chain in issoe and you ll find yourself in the heart of the Cornish mining countryside – ideal for a day’s exploring on two wheels. The Bissoe team can set you up with the hire-bike and accessories of your choice, meaning you can spend the day cycling off road along the most picturesque of trails, safe in the knowledge that the kit beneath you is built to withstand whatever’s thrown at it!
long the trails, you ll find old, dilapidated engine houses and beautiful wooded valleys, with hedgerows filled with honeysuckle, gorse, heather and primroses. You can even take the coast-to-coast trail, from the south coast at Devoran and Point to the north coast at Portreath, where you’ll enjoy a well-earned break and breath taking view of the Atlantic. Be sure to keep an eye on the Bike Chain Facebook page to find out more about the regular information evenings. These often include demonstrations of the latest in bike and training technology, talks from bike-training professionals plus on-thenight offers and complimentary food and drink! What’s more, if you fancy being part of a social experience that makes the most of Cornwall on two wheels, there are a number of social rides every Saturday morning which head out from the hirestore, both on and off-road, perfect for those wanting to get out and discover more of Cornwall whilst meeting new people. Visit the website or Facebook page to find out more. With two stores, a huge range of competitively priced bikes and accessories as well as a social network of cyclists waiting for you to join, Bike Chain Ricci might just be the one for you.

Fowey Festive in
We explain why you should pencil the Fowey Christmas Market in your diary. w o rd s by :
Dan Warden
N
ow in its 12th year, the Fowey Christmas Market is once again set to hit the streets of this beautiful parish town and here at Cornwall Living, we’re proud to be supporting the event! Situated in the mouth of the river Fowey, this is one of Cornwall’s premier festive markets. It’s always amazing to walk among the more than 10,000 visitors who, returning from all over the UK, have had the event pencilled boldly in their diaries since the last year. The buzz is always the same; there’s always the excited chatter and electricity of a crowd who’ve waited for the event that, finally, is once again here! The weekend kicks off on Friday 9th December. All retail shops will open and at 4.30pm, the hog roast begins! With late night shopping starting at 5.30pm, an appearance from none other than Santa Claus himself as well as the o cial owey Christmas lights switch on, Friday will really set the tone for the weekend. Perfect for those who enjoy a wintery evening walk by the water, nothing
will get you in the mood for Christmas more than the waft of mulled wine in the crisp, evening air. Sponsored by Cornish Horizons, this free-entry event gives people the chance to meet and browse the wares of over 200 exhibitors across Fowey, from the county’s finest uality artisan food and drink endors and sellers of bespoke Cornish inspired, arts and crafts to the best artisan wares Cornwall has to offer. The ‘A Bite of Cornwall’ food and drink market will be found on Albert Quay and on Town Quay will be the gift, craft, art, jewellery and décor market. The reason we’re so excited is that it’s not just an event for the grown ups. Indeed, it’s not purely an event for Christmas shopping, either; plenty of inspiration can be found here for those simply looking to add to their art collection and, if you’re looking to update your tired interior, you ll find an abundance ê BELOW of stalls that are bound to get your innerinterior designer uices owing! hat s more, The historical streets of Fowey are the mar uees are suitable for dogs and there b eautif ul over are plenty of shops, cafés and pubs in Fowey C hristmas

that welcome four-legged family members with open arms too! As you’ll know if you regularly read our magazine, we love nothing more than to enjoy Cornwall with our furry friends in tow. If you’re driving, don’t worry about parking – there’s plenty to be found just a short walk from town and if it’s really cold, you can jump on the park-and-ride shuttle busses that will be toing and froing throughout the weekend. And, with cashpoints handy and toilets in abundance, you can be sure there’ll be no unexpected interruptions to your first taste of Christmas, 2016. Finally, if you’re travelling a long way to make this event or you simply want to make a weekend of it without toing and froing, why not stay at one of the town’s uaint bed and breakfasts or, e en, at the Fowey Hall Hotel and turn your Christmas market into a well earned weekend away? As an Outstanding Area of Natural Beauty, strolling around the medieval buildings of Fowey in the winter takes some beating! o find more information about the events that are running throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday – including children’s entertainment, Santa’s grotto and stilt-walkers – visit the Fowey Christmas Market website; the digital countdown clock is enough to get anyone excited!

s effervescent as ever, Giles is one of those people that when you meet them you can’t help but you ask yourself “where does he get his energy and enthusiasm?” Always a pleasure to talk to and a mine of information, I’m here to talk turkey with a man who certainly knows his onions! The family farm at Trevaskis has a history spanning over 400 years and it’s down to the entrepreneurial spirit of the Eustice family and their team that it is the success it is today. ou ll find a ourishing pick your own here as we speak families are out in the fields harvesting pumpkins for Halloween. The restaurant, set up by Giles’ mum, has grown from a small log cabin and now serves hearty breakfasts from early morning through to lunches and on into dinner. Sunday roasts here are famous for their taste and portion size! In 2008 the Trevaskis Market was launched, which is home to a butchery, fish counter, bakery and much, much more. It has everything you need for your weekly shop stocking as many locally sourced products as possible – we’re talking food yards here, not miles!

“Our next big event is Game Day on Saturday 10th December”
ê BELOW Produce doesn' t get f resher or more local than this
If all that talk of food wasn’t enough to tempt your taste buds I ask Giles about what’s on the menu for Christmas. “It’s an exciting time at Trevaskis over the coming months,” explains Giles. “Our next big event is Game Day on Saturday 10th December. It’s a great day where we have as much game as we can source on display for visitors to try and buy. From rabbit, pigeon, pheasant, grouse and partridge and beyond our butchers will be on hand all day with helpful information on preparation and cooking.” At Trevaskis it’s not just about offering customers the very best ingredients, it’s also about education and so Game Day will also incorporate cooking demonstrations and tastings – I for one will be heading down to try some wild boar pate. Preparations are also underway at the butchery for those all important Christmas meats. The team are gearing up as the counters are laden with gammons and sausages from Trevaskis’ own British Lop pigs as well as steaks, roasting joints and foreribs from South Devon breed herds. Ordering your Chirstmas ‘bird’ couldn’t be easier. You can choose from traditional organic, free range turkeys and large chickens or perhaps opt for a duck or goose. When it comes to collecting your Chirstmas fair you’ll be in for a real treat. As you enter the farm you’ll find a massi e fruit and egetable mar uee, stocked with all your staples for the festive table along with some lovely exotics. You can pick up all the fresh produce you need
here before heading over to the butchers who will have your meat order ready for collection. Top that with a glass of mulled wine while you shop and you’ll certainly be in the Christmas spirit. No harsh lighting, sole destroying aisles and pre packed produce here, just good food with an honest pedigree, all at competitive prices. Who wouldn’t want to put a turkey that’s only travelled from as far as the Padstow coast on their table? The market also stocks a wide range of drinks from Camel alley fi to world wines and craft ales alongside a deli groaning with local cheeses, artisan charcuterie and homemade uiches and sausage rolls ou ll also be able to pick up those last minute stocking fillers here fter lea ing with a shopping basket full of gorgeous produce from the market, it’s just a short stroll across the car park to the Farmhouse Kitchen restaurant, where you can enjoy a spot lunch with dishes created from the freshest ingredients and Trevaskis Farm produce – shopping always makes me hungry! Giles and his team really have thought of everything for the festive shopper, so if you want to take the legwork and stress out of Christmas this year then Trevaskis arm should be your first port of call

AWARDS AND MICHELIN RECOMMENDATIONS AT CHAPTER 1 Chef Tom Mackins has always kept to his ethos of delivering passion in every dish. Starting in 2004 as a kitchen porter, Tom has developed his love for the kitchen while traveling across the country and working with some of the best restaurants and hotels. Now, having started his very own restaurant, Tom can proudly rest on the knowledge that not only has Chapter 1 survived the rush of a Cornish summer but it came out the other end with two accolades from a Cornish food and drink awarding body; one for best chef and one for best restaurant in Cornwall. To win one award is always a tremendous honour but to win two is beyond words. But his commendations haven’t stopped there! Chapter 1 was also recently mentioned in the Michelin Guide. “Set in a parade of shops in the heart of town, with recycled mix and match furnishings, filament lighting and copper ducting. The keen young chef creates adventurous British dishes, with new ideas trialled on Wednesday nights”. While this is undoubtedly a well-deserved honour, Tom is already looking to the future: “Opening a restaurant has been my dream for a very long time, and now that that dream is a reality I’m already thinking about Chapter 2”. Well, looking at the success of Chapter 1, so are we! C H A P T E R 1 8 Morf a H all, C lif f Road, N ewq uay TR7 1SG 0163 7 49 9 263 www.chapter1restaurant.co.uk

We talk to the folks over at John’s Wine and Spirit Specialist to find out how to get into the winter spirits.
t’s been another booming year for the craft drinks industry. Increasing numbers of us are abandoning bigbrand mass-produced spirits in favour of smaller-scale artisan products. Pubs and restaurants are no longer judged solely on the quality of their food, but on the size and variety of their gin list. We are a nation with a thirst for the new and unusual, and with distilleries springing up all the time it’s never been a better time to try something different. Nowhere is this more apparent than at Johns’ Wine and Spirit Specialists in St Ives, where you need only glance in the window to be struck by the astonishing selection of rare and unusual spirits on offer. One of Cornwall’s longest running family businesses, Johns’ was established in 1894 and began life as a grocery store with a small selection of alcohol. Over 120 years later the business boasts almost 100 craft gins, 100 artisan rums and over 200 whiskies from around the world. “Our selection has grown considerably even since last year,” explains Tom Hanson, co-owner and great great grandson of founder Elizabeth Johns. “Almost every week we are approached by new distilleries looking for an outlet for their products. Just recently, a man from a new Cornish distillery walked in off the street with a bottle of gin he’d made – we tasted it and it was so good that we put it on the shelves the same day!”

27/10/2016 17:05
Aside from its enormous selection, what really sets Johns’ apart, is the level of service and the knowledge of the staff. As Tom explains, “when buying something special, it’s important to speak to someone who really knows what they’re talking about. Our staff will listen to you, find out what you like, and point you in the direction of that perfect bottle.” Nothing is more daunting than walking into a shop with an impressive array of choice, so knowing there will be people at hand to help navigate the tide of spirits is comforting.
Of course, being able to try before you buy helps too. That’s why the Johns’ team are offering free tasting of many of their products over the festive period, allowing you to sample a range of delicious spirits from spiced rum to Japanese whisky to ensure you walk out completely satisfied with your purchase. “We have more products on promotion now than at any other time – especially on festive tipples like rum, whisky and luxury port. We’ve also teamed up with a few of our wine suppliers to offer some fantastic money-off deals running from now until the end of December.” But what if you can’t make it down to St Ives? Fear ye not – Johns’ has just launched a brand new website www.theliquorcellar. co.uk allowing you to browse and buy thousands of artisan spirits from the comfort of your own home. The site also offers useful serving suggestions and cocktail ideas while next-day delivery is available nationwide – perfect for some last minute Christmas shopping! So pop down to St Ives, or have a look around the website, and find the spirit that will define your winter.

I
t’s always the way; word in Cornwall spreads and when you’re hearing good things about an up-and-coming restaurant, you know there’s nothing left to do but try it for yourself. So, after hearing some pretty special reviews about Harry’s Cali Style, I booked a table and informed a friend that it was time for a long-overdue catch up. he trip got off to a ying start got a parking space in Hayle! And, not only that, it was yards from the restaurant, which saved me a potential drowning in the torrents of rain that were sweeping in from the Atlantic that evening. Things were going well. As we entered, Felicia and her team of warm and friendly staff did everything to make us feel at home. As they showed us to our table, we began taking in all the finer details and features that, together, make Harry’s the quirky establishment that it is. There’s a fresh and almost-butnot-quite retro edge to the décor. Actually, it s completely uni ue e not eaten anywhere else like it! Selecting an option from the mouthwatering menu proved somewhat tricky. You see, this combination of Mexican
spice with precise American grilling encompasses two of my favourite kinds of food. Eventually, I went for the California style burger, and with no regrets. The food arrived quickly (even more impressive when you learn that Felicia also cooked it) and, being the self-confessed burger connoisseur that I am, I can honestly say that this was up there with the best I’ve had! Not only was it exceptionally tasty, it was garnished with fresh, crunchy salad and accompanied with a generous side of fries and coleslaw. From across the table, my friend proclaimed, “best burrito I’ve ever had!” Our evening at Harry’s Cali Style was awless, from start to finish erything from the service and atmosphere to the quality of the food on our plates was second to none. Unfortunately, as designated driver, I was unable to sample the extensive list of cocktails, but the way see it that s the perfect excuse to visit again soon!

IN SPLENDID isolation A dog-friendly stay at the Gurnard’s Head reveals that you should never judge a book by its cover.
T
he Gurnard’s Head sits alone on a clifftop, with a backdrop of the most beautiful, rugged and remote west Cornwall moorland. It’s bright orange exterior looks somewhat incongruous in its surroundings, almost out of place. However, it doesn t take long for us to find out that, as with most things in life, you shouldn’t judge on looks alone. On entering through the small porch the door opens on to the main bar and instantly you get a sense of the building’s soul our eyes ick between intage furniture, unique and handpicked, giving a retro Shoreditch feel. Modern paintings are interspersed with sepia and monochrome photographs. Walls are painted in earthy colours, ceilings are low and oors gently
undulating – we know we’re in for a treat. Chris, who runs the Gurnard’s Head, immediately comes round from behind the bar to give a soft, warm welcome of the sort one would expect from a top London hotel. We are asked our name and immediately shown, along with our four-legged friend, to our room. The walk to your accommodation is a short stroll - through the bar’s sitting room, past the restaurant and up the stairs. There are only seven rooms and we soon arri e at the open door of room fi e he room isn’t huge but it’s perfectly formed – a large kingsize bed, plenty of space and a neat bathroom. I glance across at my wife and from the look on her face know that she is happy. There are no televisions in

Celebrate in style
You can hire out the Gurnard’s for your wedding celebrations. The combination of stunning gardens, gorgeous rooms, great service and wonderful food would certainly make it a day to remember
the rooms at the Gurnard’s and little or no mobile phone reception – radios, books and good old-fashioned peace and quiet are the order of the day here. There is wifi if you simply can t be parted from the outside world, but we’d highly recommend you resist. There is something very special about being disconnected out here, on the cliff, next to the ocean. Enough of waxing lyrical, supper calls, so we venture down to take our place at a reserved table. There is a restaurant room but as no dogs are allowed in there we are happy, sat with our spaniel for company in the bar. I think it’s a great compromise when hotels have areas where you can and where you can’t take your dog – it keeps everyone happy. I choose a soused mackerel fillet that s ser ed with purple sprouting broccoli and a light lemon dressing. It’s light, piquant and delicious. My wife declares a warm, peppered goat s cheese with fig and almond to be an unctuous delight. We love the fact that you can order a wide selection of wines in fi e different si es, a great way to sample a variety of wines or match a wine with each course. Main course for my wife
is a wild mushroom and rocket risotto with the wonderful additions of Cornish blue, wild garlic, pine nuts and a tru e miso The meat eater in me can’t resist a Cornish lamb barnsley chop served with boulangere potatoes and an anchovy and mint jus – a clever mix of ingredients. Both dishes are a triumph, beautifully presented and melt in the mouth. We share a cheeseboard for dessert, delicious, although some celery and a few more crackers wouldn’t have gone amiss. But, that’s being very, very picky about what was a lovely meal and we retire to our room happy and replete. A good night’s sleep is followed by yet more culinary delights. Breakfast at the Gurnard’s ead really is fit for a king and ser ed on the most amazing local, handmade Fish Pye pottery. After all that food we decide some exercise is in order so, with the hound bounding around next to us like a puppy, we embark on a cliff walk taking in some incredible scenery. We are a happy trio as we walk the west Cornwall clifftops. Whether you stay at the Gurnard’s for some rest and relaxation or use it as stopover en route to the Isles of Scilly, this is a very special place.

ow do you talk to a couple about the charity they started after the suicide of their much-loved son, Ben? But I needn’t have worried; Steve and Sharon Cowburn are wonderfully warm, open and funny when I meet them at the headquarters of their business Flying Start Nurseries, to talk about moving to Cornwall and the Invictus Trust (and yes, they adopted the name long before Prince William). The charity helps young people with mental health issues and lobbies for specialist residential care for 16 to 24 year olds in the county. Background Sharon is Cornish and Steve a Lancastrian who met in Bristol where they both worked, Sharon as a teacher and Steve as a business consultant for Coopers and Lybrand. “But we were always going to live in Cornwall eventually, it’s an astonishing place!” Steve explains, “but I always imagined I would be in my mid fifties not ! Sharon continues “I was visiting my mum in Cornwall and went to look at a nursery business that was up for sale in Camborne ith a fi e year old and nine month old twins, I was keen to run my own nursery; bring my experience as a teacher to gi ing young children a ying start’. All I needed to do was go home and persuade Steve!” The rest, as they say, is history, Steve commuted up and down to Bristol while the nursery thrived with Sharon at the helm, writing a curriculum for the kids (unheard of in ! and starting their own in house training. “When other teachers started
sending their children to us I knew we’d got it right!” They now run 8 nurseries and Steve works for the family business full-time, as does one of their daughters and her husband. The charity ll seemed fine the family thri ed in Cornwall; were settled and happy. Sharon picks up the story. “Ben, one of our twins, decided he wanted to study fashion. He was a real fashionista! He had all the details of the course he wanted to do at a fashion academy in London while he worked at Topman. So we let him go, he lived with his godparents, which helped a lot. And, he loved it… Liberty was his favourite shop. He was a really eyecatching boy, I remember one time when we were in Milan he got involved in a shoot with a supermodel; who later ran up to kiss him and thank him. He was just that kind of boy!” Steve continues. “Then the whole family went to Spain, he seemed fine but maybe not quite right. It was during the ash cloud so all our ights got delayed and en had to y straight back to London on his own.” Sharon picks up the story again: “Shortly afterwards the police arrived to tell us that Ben had been talked down from a railway bridge by a train driver who stopped her train when she saw him to talk him down. Steve shot up to London to bring him home.” That was in the September and sadly by Christmas Ben had taken his own life in a specialist mental health unit for adults in Cornwall. “It was a nightmare, we realised that there were no facilities for young people of Ben’s age in Cornwall, and at just 18 he was put into a unit with people in their 60s

and 70s who were chronically ill and being highly medicated.” Steve explains: “The Invictus Trust was born within an hour or two of his death… we just knew we had to do something to raise awareness and call for a specialist unit for young people aged to in Cornwall.” The Trust itself is named after the poem that inspired Ben and often used by Nelson Mandela during his long jail sentence… ‘I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.’ Steve adds with a smile, “Ben also had an anchor tattoo… but I suspect it was more in homage to Kate Moss.” Now they work locally and nationally campaigning for better understanding and facilities for young people, all of their three daughters, Sophia (Ben’s twin), Laura and Amber help. Indeed Amber now works for national charity Young inds hey are definitely a family on a mission to make life better in Cornwall.

Historically, your retirement would have been funded by your personal and state pension plus any other applicable state benefits, in estments or sa ings you may have accrued. However, the economic climate over recent years may have put a dent in some of those expectations and the impact of an ageing UK population means that state support can only go so far. If you’re a homeowner, aged over 55 and looking for additional funds, then an Equity Release plan may be your solution. Access to funds he alue of most homes has significantly increased over the last few decades, meaning that many people are asset rich through property wealth, but more limited in cash resources. Aviva’s latest research found 69% over-45 homeowners say that their home is worth more than their pensions, savings and investments combined. A house bought in the late 1990s has increased on average by 156% meaning you may have more money tied up in your home than you think. Peace of mind “Money worries can become a problem as you approach retirement,” explains Matt. “Supporting your lifestyle and managing credit is no problem when a steady salary is coming in every month – it’s only when the prospect of this income drying up draws
closer that the reality begins to hit home. A well-chosen Equity Release scheme can alleviate these worries and pave the way to a comfortable retirement.” A number of options are available, allowing you to raise funds based on the value of your home as a lifetime loan. With some plans you are not even required to pay off any capital or interest at any point during your lifetime. Effectively, the provider of the loan reclaims the capital and any interest gained through the eventual sale of the property, once the final plan holder dies or moves into long-term care. Protection for you “As retirement planning specialists and members of the Equity Release Council, we are there to guide you through the options,” Matt adds. “Of course, there are a number of areas that need to be considered to identify if it’s right for each client and if at any point we don’t feel that Equity Release is suitable, we will advise against it and suggest alternatives”. Equity Release is now considered by many to be as important as their pension when planning retirement and it pays to talk to the experts. Harris Begley Financial Planning can provide you with professional, impartial advice in order to plan a brighter retirement, specifically designed for you

A blooming e i ci While the Isles of Scilly are known for their captivating flowers it wasn’t always rosy, so we learn a bit about the budding postal flower business from Churchtown Farm.
A
collective sigh is practically audible over Scilly as the incredibly busy tourist season slows to a graceful close in late October and islanders draw breath before nipping off to the mainland for a wellearned break. However, for the islands’ ower industry autumn marks the start of the farming year as the first scented narcissi are picked. raditionally on Scilly owers were only farmed commercially during the winter months but just over 25 years ago Andrew and Hilary Julian of Churchtown Farm on St Martin’s started to look for a commercial ower crop that could keep the farm, and more importantly the farm’s income, going over the summer months. They focused their search on scented owers, as this is what the Isles of Scilly were already known for. At the end of their search they tentatively started growing scented pinks, a traditional cottage garden ower closely related to carnations. t was these owers, not the more traditional scented narcissi, that proved to be the salvation of Churchtown Farm, and arguably the whole ower industry on Scilly. At this time however, the Scillonian ower industry was far from blooming. Cheap imports had driven wholesale ower prices down and Scilly s ower farmers, with the extra expense of shipping their owers to the mainland, were starting to feel the pinch.
It was a holidaymaker to the island who planted the idea of posting owers when they asked if it might be possible to send some of the pinks grown at Churchtown Farm as a gift to a friend on the mainland. After the successful postal delivery, Andrew and illary explored the idea of postal owers which started to help Churchtown arm blossom into a iable ower farm Realising that relying on the passing trade was ne er going to sell enough gift boxes, especially in the winter months when the island’s population was only around 100 people, Andrew and Hilary bit the bullet and invested in some advertising to hit the Christmas gift market and the idea took off. Now, 25 years later the farm is run day-today by Andrew and Hilary’s son Ben, along with his wife Zoe, and continues to deliver stunning ower gift boxes direct to doorsteps across the length and breadth of the UK. So, as the rest of the islanders are heading off on their annual holiday, the ower farmers of Scilly are get getting ready for a busy winter ower season during which Scilly will export millions of scented narcissi to brighten homes all over the country and bring a little bit of life to the winter months.

Hip hip hooray
Don’t let a bad hip get in the way of living. Hip replacement surgery at Duchy Hospital could help improve your quality of life.

Options Hip replacement surgery is available privately and on the NHS at Duchy Hospital. Surgery as a private patient will mean a shorter wait time and that you will have your operation at a time to suit you, while receiving a range of other benefits too.
“Major surgery involves taking small risks in return for a very high chance of vastly improved quality of life”
or over 40 years, hip replacement procedures have been giving people back their mobility. Of course, surgery is no small act, yet the long-term improvements in quality of life can make the shorter-term discomfort well worth considering. Traditionally, hip replacements have been offered to older, slimmer people who'd like to keep some form of mobility as time goes on. Typically these implants outlive the patient and allow them some freedom as they enjoy later life. However, recent studies have questioned the current dogma; it’s clear that surgery performed on stronger, fitter people results in an outcome closer to normal function than if the procedure is delayed. These studies also emphasise the need to talk to an expert at an early stage in the development of symptoms. ounger patients may benefit from therapy or surgery designed to reshape the hip joint. hoping to limit pain and improve function, perhaps even delaying arthritis. Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Darren Fern says: “Hip preservation was pioneered in the UK by our team, and recent studies show that our long-term outcomes in Cornwall match those of the pioneering

surgery centre in Bern, Switzerland.” The hip implants used at Duchy Hospital are tried and tested, with a variety of different design philosophies; some designs are cemented into place, others rely on bone ingrowth to achieve stability. The ‘ball and socket’ comprise of highly polished metal or ceramic balls moving against plastic or ceramic sockets. Metal on metal implants prove generally unreliable in most cases, so are not used at Duchy Hospital. Your surgeon should discuss the aspects of the various designs and help you make a decision on what techniques are most appropriate for your circumstances. Perfection can never be guaranteed, but outcomes are usually very successful. Major surgery involves taking small risks in return for a very high chance of vastly improved quality of life. It is important to discuss the pros and cons with your surgeon so that you can make informed choices and decide whether surgery is for you.

Monday 6th and Saturday 11th March Building on the phenomenal decade-long success of The Agatha Christie Theatre Company, which played to packed houses around the UK; Bill Kenwright presents a new production adapted from one of the most celebrated works of the writer often hailed as the successor to Agatha Christie, Ruth Rendall. A Judgement in Stone’s brilliant plot unravels a lifetime of deceit, despair and coverups which, when revealed, brings a shocking revelation almost as grizzly as murder itself.
Rambert: Ghost Dances and Other Works
Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th March Ghost Dances is possibly the most popular work in Rambert’s history. It tells stories of love and compassion, as death – in the form of the iconic ghosts – interrupts the daily lives of a series of ordinary people. Created as a response to political oppression in South America, it uses imagery from the Day of the Dead and bewitching traditional songs to create moving, intensely human work. This re i al is the first time the work has been seen in the UK since 2003. Ghost Dances is presented in a triple bill alongside two new creations by Rambert. Accompanied by live music, together they showcase the dynamism and virtuosity of Britain’s national dance company.
Brendan Cole: All Night Long
Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th March A brand new show for 2017, Brendan hosts another spectacular production featuring his guest dancers, a new leading lady, a 14 piece band and singers live on stage. Amanda Winwood discusses the truth about microbeads in exfoliators.
L
iving in Cornwall, I love being close to the sea. However, I am also all too aware of the damage created by plastic sea pollution. Microbeads in skincare represent up to 4% of ocean pollution. Microbeads are tiny pieces of plastic that are found in many beauty products such as shampoo and shower gel. What many people don’t realise is that they are also in toothpaste, face scrubs, foundation and sunscreen in nanoparticular form. Microbeads were designed to provide a cheaper alternative to natural exfoliants and utilise plastic beads of usually 1-5mm aimed at removing dead skin cells and leave the skin with a smooth surface. You need to use them more often than a natural exfoliant. Although they have been an issue for
some decades, the increased use of plastic for packaging and in skincare has resulted in a major pollution issue. They have recently made national press headlines because they are too small to be filtered by our sewage systems and are now being found in our oceans. Fish and other marine based animals consume these microbeads and they end up in our food chain. Fish and birds have been found with substantial amounts of plastic in their digestive systems. Microbeads and plastics are affected by UV and the movement of the waves and are highly absorbent. When they enter the sea they absorb all toxins, so this is not good news. In one single shower it is estimated that up to 100,000 microbeads will enter the sewage system and ocean. As the dangers of microbeads are now becoming more publicly known, there is huge pressure for companies to remove microbeads from their products and find natural alternati es ew Government legislation aims to decrease the use of microbeads in skincare by 2020 significantly ban on the use of all microbeads should be the objective. At Made for Life by Spiezia Organics, we conform strictly to the Soil Association standards and use organic hand sifted chamomile stamen in our facial scrub. We use two different types of organic sugar to gi e two le els of exfoliation ot a microbead in sight. Be part of making a positive change – if you would like to do your bit for the environment and still have smooth skin then load up the App available from www.banthemicrobead.org.

Got to experience... FESTIVAL OF LIGHT AND SOUND AT THE EDEN PROJECT
E
njoy the magic and wonder of a visit to the Eden Project this Christmas, and get ready to be amazed by the spectacular new Festival of Light and Sound. As darkness falls, watch dramatic lasers pierce through the darkness to create a canopy of light illuminating the famous Eden Biomes in festive colour. Within the Mediterranean Biome, discover a beautifully choreographed performance of music and light, as the sounds of Cornish ocalists and musicians fill the air, complemented and enhanced by a myriad of dancing light projections. Festival of Light and Sound features ‘iy_project’, a collaboration between the Eden Project, creative partners EdenLAB and renowned light artist Chris Levine. This exciting event is running from 25th November until 30th December (selected dates) from 5pm.

MAIN The group with J uliette on this successf ul cancer awareness day
O
ctober is a very important month for many as it offers the opportunity to bring cancer, and the brave people who live with it, into the public’s thoughts. The amazing people over at Made for Life Foundation organised three events for people who have been, or are currently, on the cancer journey. These events are so important to help people get together and share support as well as a healthy dose of laughter and fun. he first workshop was an en iable spa day courtesy of the lovely team at Spiezia. Held at Una in St Ives, the ladies had full use of the spa facilities along with a 30-minute treatment and lunch. Needless to say it was a day filled to the brim with peaceful relaxation and chin-wagging. But the day would not have been possible without the generous help and support of the Spiezia therapists and na itchen Chef aul earney who cooked a much-needed, healthy lunch which went down a treat! he second fun filled e ent was a sculpture workshop with inspirational, local artist Lizzie Stevens. After donating her time, Lizzie helped a lovely group of ladies create their own sculpture to take home with many a laugh along the way. But it wasn’t just sculptures these lucky ladies were treated to they were also able to tuck into a delicious carrot cake courtesy of rchie rowns health food store – yum! he last, but by no means least, workshop was a fabulous dance therapy session with Lisa Stephens, founder of mindbodydance. he workshop consisted of some ballet, salsa,
stretching and relaxation, and to great effect as Lisa offered her praise as everyone showed great rhythm! The session went down so well that isa will be back in anuary to teach some more moves to her eager acolytes. hese workshops are an ama ing example of the effect simple acts of generosity can ha e on people ut words expressed from our mouths can’t even come to close to one of the remarks from one of the well looked after ladies, feel like somebody cares nd this is why it is important to make e ents like these happen, as everyone deserves to feel like the world cares, because we do So thank you to everyone over at Made for Life, you are truly an inspiration!
