June also brings the eagerly anticipated Royal Cornwall Show – a real must for locals and visitors alike. Every year there are some terrific regulars – the countryside area, food and farming pavilion, the main ring, lots of cute and cuddly and not-so-cuddly animals and rare breeds. See our preview of this year’s event. Another annual favourite is Open Studios Cornwall. This year sees 260 artists participating and we feature just a few of them in our cover feature to tempt you out to their studios and see them at work. And in honour of our much-loved, four-legged friends, we have a guide to some great dog-friendly places and activities. We also visit the stunning St Martin’s in the Isles of Scilly – a staggeringly beautiful part of the world. There are two standout moments for me this month: one was talking to sailor and adventurer Pete Goss, a bit of a hero of mine – and he is just lovely! The other was a trip aboard the Belmond British Pullman train raising money for local charity Cornwall Hospice Care, a fantastic day out and they are doing it again next year!

Mandy Body

Here’s hoping we have a fabulous, sunny June, but whatever the weather throws at us there is plenty going on in Cornwall this month.

A home from home, at home!

HBH Woolacotts celebrates 40 years

Garden Hideaways are beautiful wooden buildings designed to complement and enhance your garden. They have a unique feeling of tranquillity, quality and style, while providing extra accommodation and space away from the main house. Usually sited at the bottom of your garden, they’re a quiet and peaceful environment with a more immediate relationship to your garden. They’re double-glazed, fully insulated and heated, making them completely usable all year round.

Cornwall’s largest independent electrical retailer, HBH Woolacotts, is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Officially founded in 1976 by Ted Hemmerle, the company started with branches in Bude and Launceston. Forty years later and still a family run, Cornish business, HBH Woolacotts owns and operates ten retail outlets across Cornwall and Devon, including the UK’s first

Panasonic Store in Plymouth and an electrical superstore in St Austell. Plans are afoot for some wild celebrations throughout July, so keep a look out for fantastic customer promotions, crazy offers, fun competitions and much more. 01288 352269 www.hbh-woolacotts.co.uk

A Garden Hideaway is more than a garden-room. It’s a warm, safe environment to accommodate young people looking for their own space or an annex for elderly relatives wanting to maintain independence. Could it be the catalyst for downsizing to a mortgage-free property? Or maybe the new holiday accomodation, music room, hobby room, office or studio? However you choose to use your Garden Hideaway is up to you! “The possibilities are endless,” says creator Calum White, “so let’s talk soon!” 01288331048 07766 503468 www.garden-hideaways.co.uk

Rick Stein’s family breaks in Cornwall Padstow is the perfect place to spend some quality family time this summer. From cycling along the Camel Trail, crabbing off the harbour wall to a boat trip along the estuary, there’s plenty of outdoor activities to keep the family entertained. Rick Stein’s new family break includes a £100 dining card that can be used in any of Rick’s restaurants or foodie shops, offering you the flexibility to enjoy a relaxed picnic with treats from Stein’s Deli or a sit down family meal at Rick Stein’s Café.

Take a closer look at the often-hidden world of our artistic community, with Open Studios Cornwall: a completely unique way to explore the county, with an incredible 260 artists taking part.

F

rom the fishing villages of Penzance to the golden beaches of Bude, Cornwall’s thriving art scene spans the entire length of the county. This summer, for one week only (from Saturday 28th May to Sunday 5th June), you can step behind the scenes to discover where painters, ceramicists, stonemasons and textiles artists get their inspiration. With the credentials to attract art aficionados and such a wide variety of unusual creative spaces to wander through, Open Studios Cornwall, now in its 12th year, is a wonderful way to see more of the county. Experiences range from catching

Guided on your travels by signs with bright orange Os, you’ll peek into old school houses, marvel at converted barns and venture into wild woodland. For creative types, Open Studios is also an opportunity to learn more about artists’ techniques – from demonstrations in acrylics, to woodcarving and the latest printing technologies. The event covers a myriad of styles and materials, including gold leaf, ceramics and stonemasonry. You could even uncover a hidden talent of your own by taking part in one of the many

workshop sessions held throughout the week. With tutorials in felt making, mono printing, glass art and more, you’re bound to find something you’ve never tried before. It’s an illuminating experience – and so, quite aptly, we begin our own whistle-stop tour of Cornwall with a visit to Hannah Wheeler, an artist whose clever use of lighting enables her to capture the unique stories written in the expressions of her subjects. Working largely in oils, graphite and gold leaf, Hannah skilfully utilises a variety of surfaces including canvas and reclaimed wood. Taking her inspiration from the masters of art, Vermeer and

Caravaggio, her portraits explore her fascination with people. This will be Hannah’s first year taking part in Open Studios Cornwall, so she’s looking forward to lots of people popping into Bude on their tour of the county. She tells us, “There are several artists working here in Bude – from textiles artists to painters of seascapes and abstracts.” In fact, artists flock to the north coast of Cornwall, seeking inspiration in the wild windswept moors, ever-changing surf and long stretches of white sand. For Hannah, living in Cornwall is all about the simple life. She says, “Bude is such an inspiring place. I feel rooted here,

with a strong connection to the people and artists – it’s the right place for me. I live by the beach with two teenagers and a silly whippet! It’s a huge privilege to be in a place that I love, doing what I love.” Hannah’s upbringing played a big part in defining her ‘simple life’ philosophy and the way she approaches her art. Having spent her early years in South Petherton, Somerset, the family moved to Devon, where Hannah was home schooled. They lived off-grid, using only oil lamps and candles in the evenings. It was a way of life that Hannah says kick-started her fascination with lighting. To her, low lamplight isn’t frightening or gloomy – it brings definition to the faces she paints. Hannah begins her creative process by photographing her subjects, ensuring the ‘Rembrandt’ lighting is just right. Next, she selects her oil paints. Hannah tells us, “I use a really limited palette of around six colours. I scrub in the shadows, turning the canvas a murky green. Then I add the skin tones – olives and browns – to create warmth. After that I scratch in the highlights, which creates the texture.” “Doing something private, such as art, can be quite isolating. Being part of a big event, such as Open Studios, helps artists to feel connected to the whole of Cornwall – part of something bigger.” For many artists, Hannah included, Open Studios Cornwall is an opportunity to connect with new audiences. During the week, Hannah will be preparing a piece for an exhibition at the castle in Bude. “I’ll be

showing my oil sketches and I’m hoping to have a big piece underway. I’m counting on people coming in and asking me questions!” Even within the artistic community itself, it’s a chance to hear what inspires other creators. Hannah tells us, “I enjoy hearing other artists’ stories – why they’ve produced something. You can uncover so much more once you know an artist’s reasons, their story.” She adds, “It’s nice to connect with people and I often find that if you click with the artist, you click with the art.” “People can sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed by galleries – intimidated. Open Studios Cornwall is so much more open, you’re seeing the work in progress and this breaks down the mystery.”

rom time to time a property comes available that simply ticks all the boxes. Perched upon the path to Treyarnon Bay Beach, this property gazes out over the rugged, north Cornish coastline and, as you wheel your suitcases up the large, gated driveway to The Beach House, you’ll be tempted to judge this book by its cover. And so you should. As you walk in, you’re immediately charmed by the house’s individual character – the result of cleverly used, reclaimed materials throughout create a true ‘beach house’ feel. After a long day exploring the bay, as you unwind for the evening, you can drink in the views from the master bedroom which, commanding a floor of its own, comes complete with a beautifully understated en suite, vaulted ceiling and its very own woodburner, so you can get cosy. Four other bedrooms appear on the lower floors, including a guest room with en-suite bathroom as well as a family bathroom and twin shower room on the bottom floor. You won’t have to worry about the kids – they’ll keep themselves entertained in the old garage,

now converted into a games room, leaving you plenty of time to sink into the hot tub. The sitting room, located on the first floor, provides a beautiful, open space to warm up in front of the wood-burner after a day carousing in the outdoor pool. With Padstow on your doorstep, you’re privy to an excellent range of local shops and a supermarket. After a leisurely cycle down the popular Camel Trail, which lines the banks of the Camel Estuary, you can soak up the local culinary scene with a tempting choice of Cornish pubs and boutique restaurants. This stunning property has all the makings of the perfect lock up and leave holiday home, and at the same time offers a comfortable, permanent residence to a family looking to relocate.

t’s always the case that when house hunting, certain areas and properties simply never appear on the market and, of course, they’re the ones you’d really like to get your hands on. And yet, on the beach road in Constantine Bay, four miles from the fishing village of Padstow, a blue moon has risen. Aptly named Windsway, this house enjoys the best of all weather and during the summer months, a south facing patio leading onto a large, lawned garden, complete with veggie patch, Cornish palm trees and its own greenhouse, offers any family an acre of paradise in which to soak up the Cornish sun. The house boasts two sitting rooms, one on each floor, as well as three ground floor double bedrooms, with the master bedroom and adjoining bathroom located on the first floor. You can witness the awesome Atlantic storms from the first floor sitting room, or cook up one of your own in the accommodating kitchen, to satisfy that distinct, sea-air appetite. And, after dinner, you can drift off to the surprisingly soothing whistle of the wind as the weather rages overhead. When the clouds part, you’ll want to get

down to Padstow which, just four miles away, offers would-be sea-goers the chance to get on the water, with fishing charters leaving the harbour and spots on the cliffs aplenty from which to catch dinner. Alternatively, you can take a leisurely cycle down the Camel Trail, a popular cycle trail lining the Camel Estuary, before taking your pick of the boutique restaurants and Cornish pubs to refuel and round off your day by the sea. What’s more, being so close to Padstow, you have access to charming shops and a supermarket, meaning your day-to-day essentials are never far away, which is what makes Windsway so rare – as such a beautifully built family home, it’s not very often that a property like this offers such convenience in such a highly sought after location. What’s for sure is that this property won’t be on the market for long.

Advice

Pension freedoms

Since 6th April 2015, anyone aged 55 or over has been able to take their entire defined contribution pension fund however they want...

T

his decision has allowed most pension plan-holders to draw down as much, or as little of their pension, at any time. Effectively, we are now free to shop around and devise a multitude of product combinations – even taking it all as cash! However, whilst retirement freedom creates more choice, it can also bring with it more risk... And it’s not just pension plan-holders coming up to retirement who are considering this issue. It will also impact upon those of us in the workplace who are looking to build up our pension pot (or thinking about taking one out), who now recognise that the new government rules may require a change in the way we plan our pensions. On average men retire at 64 years and 6 months and women at 63.8, according to the report Retirement Income Uncovered by Old Mutual Wealth. At these ages men can expect to live until 86.3 and women until 86.9. Being retired for 21 years or more means planning for an income that funds retirement for this length of time. Don’t pay any more tax than you have to... The first 25% of your pension pot will be taxfree either as one lump sum or as the first 25% of multiple lump sums. Here are some of the key options arising from the Pension Freedoms: 1. Uncrystallised funds pension lump sum These funds are ‘uncrystallised’, as they have not yet been used to pay a scheme pension, buy an annuity, or designated to a flexi-access drawdown fund. As it stands, your pension pot would remain as currently invested, or can be taken partly, or all, as cash.

2. Annuities Historically, three-quarters of the 320,000 or so people that retire each year opted for an annuity, which offers a regular guaranteed income. And, for many, this certainty of payment may mean that it’s still the best option. (Source: HM Treasury, March 2014) 3. Flexi-access drawdown At the other end of the scale are ‘drawdown products’, which could potentially offer a better return but do come with a higher degree of risk, as you’ll still be investing in the stock markets, and so on. 4. Blended solutions The likelihood, for many, is that they may opt for a mix of immediate cash, annuity and flexi-access drawdown – thereby meeting current needs, delivering a guaranteed income for life, yet also leaving some funds invested in the hope of future growth.

TAG Heuer connects customers with a new, boundarybreaking smart watch, available from Michael Spiers. words by:

Dan Warden

“The TAG Heuer Connected watch gives you the means not only to connect to the future, but also to connect to eternity” Jean-Claude Biver

T

AG Heuer is now connecting buyers to the unlimited power of wearable technology with the new Connected Watch. The luxury Swiss watchmaker has fused 150 years of high-end experience with the latest Intel technology to create something that’s so much more than just an accessory. Revealed at a press conference at the symbolic LVMH Tower, hosted by CEO of TAG Heuer and President of the LVMH Group’s Watches division Jean Claude Biver, the Connected has wowed potential buyers the world over, who have recognised the intimate connection now possible between owners and their new watch. The design is primarily that of a true chronograph, built from grade-2 titanium – lighter and more resistant than the traditional steels and golds – with a textured black rubber strap, customisable with six other colours. What’s more, for the first time, TAG Heuer has developed three digital watch dials (known as faces) which feature the immediately recognisable design codes of TAG Heuer’s Carrera collection, including hands, index, counters, date window and minute track. All available dials, including the GMT, chronograph and 3-hand dial are available in a choice of black, deep blue or pearl white. So, how do you connect? The Connected is, above

all, a watch, so the dial and hands remain. However, the interactive counters, located at 12, 6 and 9 o’clock allow you access to thousands of apps, in full-screen mode, at your leisure and at the tip of your fingers. Even if you leave your phone at home, as long as it’s got a connection, so do you. With 4GB of memory, Bluetooth and WIFI connectivity, as well as being audio enabled, TAG Heuer could not have achieved more in such a smart, small package whilst retaining the quality of build and subtlety of style that makes anything TAG Heuer priceless. Founded in the remote Swiss mountain village of St Imier, TAG Heuer has been unrivalled in quality, creating bespoke timekeeping solutions since 1860. 156 years later, in an age saturated with technology, the Swiss manufacturer has produced a watch that stands out from the crowd as a truly timeless masterclass. So, if connecting in style with the highest quality of hardware is for you, pop into your nearest Michael Spiers and get a feel for the future.

HFC in June Some wonderful entertainment at the Hall For Cornwall this month. Great music, shows and drama with something for the young and young at heart members of the family.

n Spymonkey

n The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars

With Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary making waves across all the media there are two performances not to be missed. Firstly, and with tongue firmly in cheek – watch all 75 onstage deaths in the Bard’s plays with Spymonkey, four “outrageously funny clowns”. Or for some truly moving Shakespeare it has to be King Lear. Michael Pennington, one of our foremost actors heads a distinguished cast in this epic new interpretation of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy. A definite must see. And then for something completely different… some Gilbert and Sullivan never goes amiss with the whole family. And HFC has one of their most popular operas, HMS Pinafore. Brilliantly infectious tunes that will be stuck on rewind in your head for days afterwards. For a real treat – try all three and make June a really fabulous month!

And then there’s the pie in Titus Andronicus. Spymonkey will perform them all – sometimes lingeringly, sometimes messily, sometimes movingly, sometimes musically and always hysterically. Take a dip

Owning a hot tub can improve and enhance many aspects of life, as we explore with Cornish Hot Tubs.

é ABOVE There’s nothing like relaxing in your own hot tub

“Unwind in your own bubbling oasis with music, sensory lighting and aromatherapy!”

A

hot tub is the perfect antidote to a hectic day – simply jump in with a refreshing drink, then lie back and relax! Hot tubs carry a whole host of other, often-overlooked benefits, not least in helping to improve health. Hot tubs play a key role in hydrotherapy, for example by helping in the alleviation of stress, muscle and joint problems and even acting as a natural aid to sleep. Swim spas – a bit like an underwater treadmill, with a jet stream providing a current to swim against – are used for fitness and aerobics. Cornish Hot Tubs, based at Carnon Downs, was initially started in 1999 after Partner John Roberts bought a hot tub for his wife, Jean, who required intensive daily hydrotherapy after breaking her back. The hot tub provided much relief, vastly improving Jean’s recovery. Yet another overlooked benefit is a simple one – a focal point for proper family time and socialising with friends. A hot tub will create fun, lasting memories that you’ll

cherish forever. And for couples, a hot tub can enable quality, uninterrupted time to relax together after a busy day. Unwind in your own bubbling oasis with music, sensory lighting and aromatherapy! What’s more, owning a tub can dramatically boost business. Ever more holiday cottages, lodges and boutique hotels have realised the benefits of installing a hot tub to draw clients in. Cornish Hot Tubs has much experience in supplying and servicing the commercial market around Cornwall. These holiday lets have seen an increase in bookings and revenue as they launch their properties into the luxury market. Cornish Hot Tubs is a local, family-run business with over 17 years’ expertise within the spa industry. It is the largest supplier of hot tubs and swim spas in Cornwall, to both domestic and commercial customers. The company offers a broad range of spas from carefully selected, quality manufacturers, including LA Spas, Catalina Spas, Superior Spas and Wellis. The team can use their vast knowledge to help you select the hot tub or swim spa that’s perfect for you. But they don’t just sell you your dream spa and leave you to it, as John explains. “We have a dedicated service team ready to deliver, install and maintain your spa.” So what are you waiting for? Pop down to the showroom and relax in your new tub!

Bespoke joinery and furniture made in Cornwall with tradition and passion.

G

ood Life Joinery offers a design and build service for any size project, from large oak framed buildings to single pieces of bespoke furniture. Founder Stuart Bowman-Harris moved to Cornwall in 2001 and set up his business producing doors, windows and furniture. Inspired by a couple of local projects, he trained in green oak timber framing and is now able to offer a service that includes designing and making your home, as well as everything in it! The whole team at Good Life are passionate about wood, absolutely tool mad and inspired by heritage; they use traditional methods with a contemporary approach and are keen to do right by any building they are working on, preferring to reveal its history rather than cover it up. The team demands the best from themselves in order to deliver a first-rate product every time. Good Life’s most recent project is Harry and Sarah’s barn, a complete conversion from what was essentially a cowshed into a stunning open-plan living space for a young family. Stuart and the team created an oak

frame to raise the height of the roof and gain a mezzanine space, now used as a kids’ playroom. They also facilitated a ground source heat pump, underfloor heating and saw the addition of polished concrete floors, which complete the fusion of the modern and the traditional. Sarah and Harry report that this building has changed their lives… very much for the better! The big news for 2016 is that the workshop has moved to a new, larger premises and yard at The Old Pump House, Hallworthy, near Camelford. With over 15 years’ experience working on a vast array of projects, the team welcome any kind of enquiry and offer a friendly approach towards fully understanding your joinery needs and requirements. Why not make an appointment to visit the workshop and see how the magic happens?

He is so obviously enjoying his journey and the story so far. He tells me that he’s not sure why I want to interview him, and when I explain that it’s because he’s a famous yachtsman and adventurer I am rewarded with the first huge grin of the day. “I’m known as the man who broke the biggest catamaran in the world!” Actually, Pete is perhaps best known for his heroic rescue of Frenchman and fellow competitor Raphael Dinelli from mountainous Southern Ocean seas and hurricane force winds in the 1996 Vendee Globe single-handed round the world race, for which he was awarded the MBE by Her Majesty the Queen and the Legion d'Honneur by the French President. But he has also walked to the North Pole, kayaked around Tasmania, built Team Philips – arguably the most advanced sailing catamaran ever, and recreated the voyage of the smallest migrant vessel ever to make it to Australia by building the wooden lugger Spirit of Mystery amongst many other adventures. Pete is in Falmouth to talk at the launch of the new maritime section of Stephens Scown. Verity Slater who heads up the maritime team

explains: “It’s all about drawing together our passion for the sea; all the members of the team either sail, kayak or surf – or do a bit of each! Creating the team is about bringing together our existing expertise to support the maritime sector.” Pete chips in: “I think it’s a great idea, the maritime industry in all its guises is a thriving, but under recognised, sector – it contributes about £500 million to Cornwall’s economy. This is the first dedicated team that I’ve heard of.” Pete lives in Cornwall on the Rame Peninsula, “I love Cornwall and the people here. It’s been like an elastic band; wherever I end up, Cornwall is home. And I do love the Rame Peninsula, it’s close enough to the rest of the world but the right side of the border!” I ask Pete to tell me about some of the standout moments in his career. “I don’t have a career; I have a series of daft ideas! But it has to be rescuing Raphael in the Vendee Globe, saving someone’s life is definitely right up there. We were very lucky that it worked! The Australian Navy flew out to find him; they were flying at the absolute limit of their capabilities. We met up afterwards and they told me that as soon as I got him… his boat sank! It floated just long enough for me to rescue him.” Pete continues: “Then back in the race I

fell in love with the Southern Ocean and her storms. I remember rounding Cape Horn and the stress lifting – you know you’re on your way home. One particular night, it was 2am, I was doing 17 knots with the spinnaker up; it was a gorgeous night with a huge full moon and suddenly about 200 dolphins turned up! Just magical! And of course Team Philips, sailing that boat was breath-taking! It was a one-off opportunity to build a 120ft boat and really challenge the norm. I will ever be proud of that project. We had a huge team of 110 people and over 1.2 million people came to the visitor centre. And finally sailing her was definitely one of my moments!” As for the future, Pete tells me: “I’m going sailing with my wife Tracey. We’re doing up an old 34ft boat, and then we’re off round the world… slowly! Tracey has been with me through everything – she was the one who suggested we sell our home to fund Aqua Quorum. I’ve been round the world several times, but this time I will get to stop and look at all the places I’ve raced past – apparently Cape Horn is very beautiful.”

Charity

A brighter future Cornish businesses giving back to the local community.

“The CCF is a grant awarding charity that supports volunteerled, grassroots community groups making a positive impact in their area”

I

t has always been Cornwall Glass and Glazing’s (CGG) long-term ambition to create a charitable fund in order to support its surrounding community and the company alone, through it’s own named fund, has invested an astounding £45,000 in community projects across Cornwall. However, by being a member of the Cornwall 100 Club (C100), which is the business arm of the Cornwall Community Foundation (CCF), CGG have been part of a campaign worth more than £200,000, all invested into the communities of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with projects ranging from setting up a memory stimulation café and improving a pre-school, to supporting a local scout group and upgrading village hall facilities, all of which were made possible this year. The CCF is a grant awarding charity that supports volunteer-led, grassroots community groups making a positive impact in their area. Many companies want to

support their local communities but often lack the time, staff or expertise to handle the many charitable appeals that they receive. The CCF provides both practical and advisory support needed to achieve this. The C100 is comprised of like-minded businesses, which along with taking corporate social responsibility seriously, aspire to invest in community projects such as developing communal spaces, providing activities to bring people together as well as supporting local, charitable organisations helping children and young people. Company Chairman of CGG, Mark Mitchell encourages other businesses to follow in the C100’s footsteps and says: “It is often commented that it is trickier to give money away intelligently than to earn it. Collaborating with other businesses within the C100 is a very easy, credible and satisfying way of ensuring the combined and significant monies granted are well directed.” CGG’s own Cornwall Glass fund places focus on projects with children, people with mental illnesses and people suffering from domestic violence. The company remains an active and willing member of C100 and Mark encourages likeminded businesses and individuals to see the difference this can make to their philanthropic giving.

Life through a lens Mike Lacey, owner of Waves Surf Art Gallery in Porthleven, talks about an incredible three years so far.

M

ike’s work has been wowing locals ever since the gallery opened, including us here at Cornwall Living. And, thanks to him, as we gaze up from our screens, we’re ever reminded of the stunning surf-scape that we’re lucky enough have on our doorstep. Looking back over the last three years, gratitude for the gallery’s success is at the forefront of how Mike remembers the journey. “For me, it’s a dream job. My weeks are determined by the swell and everything else is done between waves. I love that I never have a set routine. One day, I’ll be taking photos in the waves and the next I’ll be in the gallery working on new products, marketing or helping get orders made and sent out to clients. It can be pretty hectic at

times, jumping from one to the other, but it’s the best kind of busy.” They make their own frames at the Waves gallery, which keeps Mike busy morning and evening. He takes particular pride in his canvasses which, made in-house, are the result of a process that involves taking shots – in the water – before uploading and printing them, all in the same day! To express his love for what he does, Mike recently produced a book titled Cornish Waves, in which he carefully showcases all his favourite photos from the last four years. What’s more, the gallery now stocks HD metal prints of Mike’s photography which, with the most amazing finishes, are also waterproof and scratchproof, making them ideal for hanging in your kitchen or bathroom. Mike sums it all up, saying: “being able to have beach days with my wife and Coral my little girl, as well as being able to jump in and get some photos, is the dream lifestyle for me.” Mike’s impressive range of stunning, surf photography, which includes breath-taking additions from Hawaii and Portugal as well as an awe-inspiring, Cornish collection that captures the essence of the powerful south west coastline, can be found on the gallery’s website, with much of it available in print.

A fabulous fundraiser Sit back, relax, and dine while the world slips by aboard The Belmond British Pullman…

O

ne of my absolute favourite things has to be zooming through the wonderful Cornish countryside whilst eating delicious food with first class silver service from attentive liveried stewards, at your beautifully laid table. Add to that the knowledge that I am helping to raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care by having to endure such luxury and I’m in heaven. The Belmond British Pullman is sister train to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express and during part of its annual visit to Cornwall she is helping to raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care. The journey takes us from

Truro – with a brief stop in St Austell to pick up more guests – right out to Plymouth with stunning views across Brunel’s bridge and then non-stop to Penzance with fabulous views out over the bay to St Michael’s Mount and finally back to disembark in Truro. The interior of each coach is wonderful and unique; veneered panels have exquisite art deco marquetry; art nouveau lamps shed soft light on polished brass, bevelled glass and glowing mahogany fittings. The tables are laid with crisp white linen, silver cutlery, flowers and gorgeous, art deco, crystal glasses. And everything is polished to within an inch of its life! (At one point a steward

drops some bread rolls on the sumptuous carpet and after he’s cleared up any mess, I watch as no less than three other stewards each find a speck of a crumb that needs picking up!) The train moves off, a glass of champagne is poured, canapés served and I settle back into a huge comfy velvet covered armchair to take in the view (inside and out!) and enjoy a long, lazy, delicious lunch, served by friendly knowledgeable staff. The first thing I learn is that on their regular runs from London they know every bump and curve of the track, but in Cornwall it’s all new – so the stewards sway about a bit more than

“a glass of champagne is poured, canapés served and I settle back into a huge comfy armchair to take in the views”

usual. But soup is served from a large silver tureen without a drop being spilt. The noise of the train on the tracks is complemented by the chink of cutlery on china, laughter and gentle background chat, with the occasional silence as we all gaze out of the windows. Tamsin Thomas, Head of PR and fundraising for Cornwall Hospice Care, joins me. “Isn’t it wonderful,” she beams. “Everyone is having such a lovely time, we are so lucky to have such fabulous supporters onboard. Because of them we’ve raised over £14,600 for the charity; even the train has given us a case of champagne to raffle. We will definitely be doing it again next year.” We get to talking about the valuable work of the two hospices in Cornwall. “Some people can be quite nervous about going to a hospice. But it’s not just all about end of life care, although that is a very important part of our work; we can help at different stages of an illness and many of our clients recover or are in long term remission

and maybe needed help adapting to some new medication or at a time when they were particularly unwell. And, of course, we are there for family and friends as well. And it’s only because of all our supporters and volunteers, running our charity shops, or running marathons to help raise money to keep Cornwall Hospice Care afloat.” This year amongst other things they are challenging all of us to do something to raise funds for the charity. From parachute jumps to cake bakes, five-mile walks to long distance bike rides – people are signing up to do something to bring in a bit of extra money. We never know if we or any of our loved ones will need their help – so we really need to have them there for all the people who need them now and for some of us who may need their care in the future.

Out & about

Discover your history Take a tour through time at Cornwall Gold’s Tolgus Mill.

A

n exciting new chapter is about to begin for Tolgus Tin Mill, near Redruth. The Mill, which has been a focal point of the Cornwall Gold site since 1865, is at the heart of a renovation project aimed at safeguarding the future for the site’s Cornish heritage. The latest development has seen the introduction of guided tours which, lasting up to an hour, lead guests on a journey through Tolgus Mill’s past, present and future, sharing the mill’s fascinating history and telling the tales of the men who once worked there. The tours proudly explain, to visitors from all over, why Cornwall was world renowned as a pioneer of the mining industry. Amazingly, the restoration of the mill is funded by its own jewellery range titled ‘The Tolgus Collection’, which contains tin that has been recovered, processed and smelted onsite. This sense of selfsustainability echoes the fundamental and traditional values held at the mill during its heyday. Steve Ackland, Marketing Manager of Cornwall Gold, says: “Having opened the mill last year to the public, we’ve listened to feedback and discovered the public want to

CLM 47--ED--Cornwall Gold.indd 2

know more. As the mill has so many stories to tell, it seemed like the natural step to introduce guided tours.” Thought to be the last remaining tin streaming works left in Europe, it is also home to a working set of Cornish Stamps and a beautiful surviving example of a round frame. The stamps are over 150 years old and four of the twelve heads can be seen being operated by visitors. “The simple reason we only run four is that it is very loud! She is a beautiful and powerful machine and we take our duty of care very seriously, so it’s always a great experience to witness them in action.” Tours run at various intervals throughout the day, seven days a week. Family tickets cost just £10 for two adults and two children, with individual tickets priced at £4 for adults and £2 for children, meaning an engaging lesson in important, Cornish history has never been more affordable.

I

words by:

t’s not always easy to find the best quality products that come from an easy-going, bespoke service that knows exactly what it’s talking about, particularly when it comes to fabrics and anything else interior design. Even harder to find is a service with an eye for all that’s new, on the pulse and on track with current trends and fashion. More often than not, by the time you’ve trawled through the masses of options available, what you end up with is something far removed from what you originally had in mind – removed from the idea that inspired you to go shopping in the first place! Yet, the team at Inspirational Interiors offer a service that’s genuinely professional and that doesn’t push you to make choices you’d rather avoid. They are always pleased to talk you through the earliest stages of your refurb, and a deep understanding of their trade means that they can help you achieve exactly what it is that you want. What’s more, at Inspirational Interiors they have a keen eye for the latest trends, meaning they can let you know what’s hot and what’s not. Testament to this are the stunning new fabrics coming from one of the company’s leading suppliers, Harlequin Fabrics, and their inspiring array of Painterly Patterns. Painterly Patterns cover a wide range of fabrics and wallpapers, designed through experimentation with several different

techniques, ensuring that the outcomes are distinctly unique. ê BELOW Intricately tonal ink blotting

Ink bloTs being extremely versatile, Harlequin Fabrics’ use of ink has impressed the team at Inspirational Interiors, who love the way it absorbs into paper creating a delicate blot of colour with a softened edge. by gradually watering it down, the outcome is an intricately detailed, tonal design, often resembling an animalistic print effect. sMudgEd Marks Harlequin’s Trattino fabric is created using abstract smudge marks in bright colourways that ooze confidence, making a statement in its own right as a fantastic coordinating fabric. WaTErcolours The Painterly watercolours are an ideal solution for taking your interior from spring to summer, offering a fresh, colourful palette. Paradise, from Harlequin’s amazilia collection, is an artistic interpretation of tropical flora, printed digitally for high impact and making a real statement of

botanical brilliance. The watercolour range is an exquisite example of the Harlequins designers’ love for adopting a loose, easygoing style while experimenting with varied combinations of colour. The thing we love most about the Painterly designs is how they are expressively brought to life. What you get is much more than just a fabric or wallpaper; the statement that your new Painterly interior makes is more like that of an artistic piece. Inspirational Interiors offer creative, bespoke solutions for all interiors, whether yours is old, faded or simply in need of a bit of a refresh. If you want to bring that spring-summer vibe indoors, pop down to Inspirational Interiors, where you’ll find a safe-handed, knowledgeable and secondto-none service waiting to help you make that change.

s Cornwall transitions from spring to summer, Truro Fabrics is bursting with the latest seasonal offerings, including fresh new sewing pattern ranges from a selection of new independent British designers. Rob and Louise of Truro Fabrics discovered a number of enterprising new companies at this year’s Knitting and Stitching Show in London, and are excited to offer new ranges from southwest-based Sew La Di Da Vintage, Flo Jo Boutique and Sew Me Something. Patterns from these companies continue the ever-popular vintage revival theme, inspired by elegant silhouettes of the past, designed to fit and flatter the modern body. Today’s sewing and fashion enthusiasts will enjoy the attention to detail and the quality and clarity of instruction that come with these tried-and-tested designs. Setting these products apart from the mainstream are lovely touches like exceptionally thick paper or quirky imagery and packaging. Truro Fabrics is at the hub of a creative and innovative community in Cornwall helping their customers give the garments they create an individual twist and perfect fit. Creative individuality is key, whether you are styling an entire bridal party or embellishing a shop bought item and Truro Fabrics is the place to let your imagination run wild.

Organise your work area A comfortable worktop space to lay out your fabric and pattern pieces will help keep you organised and your project on track.

Preparation is key Unpack your pattern and carefully read through the instructions to familiarise yourself with the step-by-step process and terminology. Take time in laying out pattern pieces correctly, referring to the layout diagram provided. Rushing this step can result in a case of more haste, less speed.

Stay sharp When you’re ready to start sewing, why not treat yourself to a brand new needle. Sewing teachers recommend changing your needle every eight hours – they blunt very quickly!

Pure genius I

Hannah Tapping

A visit to Ocean Falmouth reveals that buying and owning a BMW is far more than the sum of its parts.

’ve long had a passion for everything BMW, from the black, second-hand 3 Series I bought as my first ‘real’ car to the cherry red, BMW F650ST motorbike that took my boyfriend and I on many an adventure across Cornwall and beyond. Those were the heady days at the turn of the millennium when all I had to worry about was taking my handbag and myself from A to B. How things have changed! Now with a young family my sporty 318i and motorbike are a distant, but very fond, memory. I’ve grown up and so it seems has BMW. BMW has long since been synonymous with the highest build quality, stunning performance and breath-taking design. For some, a prestigious marque such as this may be considered superior and elitist – that is far from the truth. Superior perhaps, but elitist? Certainly not. I was lucky enough to spend a morning with Anthony Scrivener, Head of Business at Ocean Falmouth, on a guided tour of the new, state-of-the art showroom followed by a drive in the much acclaimed, and for me much-coveted, X5 xDrive40d M Sport. As you would expect from BMW, a showroom is not just a showroom. In fact, the building on Falmouth Road, Penryn looks more like an art gallery. Architecturally elegant, and with a river view to die for, as you drive down into the car park you feel

as if you are about to embark on something quite special – and it’s not really a car park. Everyone who visits the new Ocean Falmouth showroom will be greeted at the doors of the building by a host who will valet park your car. Gone are the days of trying to squeeze into a tiny space in an already full parking area. Ocean Falmouth is pioneering a new automotive experience – one that makes the customer instantly feel at ease, and everyone is welcome. Once out of your car you enter through silent, gliding doors into the double height entrance area. You’ll be met by a BMW Genius, the equivalent to a doorman in the very best of hotels. Their product knowledge is second to none but they are not a sales person. They are there to ensure that your time at Ocean Falmouth is more experience than hard sell. If you’re bringing your car for a service then you’ll be escorted to the service department, if your passion is two wheels you’ll be shown upstairs to the new motorbike area complete with biker bar or if you just want to browse or have a coffee in the lounge area then they’ll facilitate that too – and the coffee is good. Gone are the sales desks of a traditional ‘dealership’ and in their place you will find private break out areas with comfortable seating. In fact, you might wonder where all the sales people are? Well, they’re there,

but in the background for when you need them, not bothering you when you don’t. The cars need little introduction except their presence. Each is carefully positioned within the space with plenty of room for admiration. Always unlocked and always charged, the cars are positioned so that you can browse at your leisure. If you are already a BMW owner and are returning your car for a service then you are no less catered for. Services are planned into a strict schedule so that your car has a specific time slot to avoid any long

waiting times. Your allocated engineer will also make a video for you while he is assessing the car so that you can see for yourself anything that needs attention. If you’re able to bring your car in yourself but are short on time then there are hot desks if you need to work, electric bikes to borrow if you want to explore or you can be dropped in to town and picked up when your car is ready. If distance is an issue then Ocean Falmouth also offers a collection and delivery service. There is little that hasn’t been thought of here.

And there is much that has been thought of when it comes to the cars themselves, in particular the BMW X5. We left the cool, classy interior of the showroom only to step into more of the same. The cream leather upholstery encases the most comfortable of seats. I often find that larger cars, especially SUVs, can sometimes feel like you are steering a boat through open water – proportions are too big and you lose that all-important connectivity with the road. Not so in the X5. The driving position, although elevated, is natural and true to BMW’s attention to detail the centre of gravity is around the driver. Controls are effortlessly placed in the perfect position and when it comes to technology the X5 has it all. All models include iDrive, BMW’s easy and intuitive software that allows the driver to safely control entertainment, information, communication and navigation functions within the car. Add the optional mobile preparation with Bluetooth interface and your BMW becomes a mobile office enabling communication by email and SMS, appointment coordination and to-do lists. Fitted with all-round cameras, the headup electronic display on the dashboard presents you with a birds-eye view of your

car – ideal for manoeuvring in and out of tight spaces. There’s also a reversing camera that shows you the position of your tow bar – electronically retractable of course and a must for the bike rack if you’re a family with a passion for cycling – should you need to hook up a boat or caravan. The new version of X5 is the first of its kind to come with seven seats. You do have to compromise a little on boot space when they’re up but they’re ideal for when you have an extended family or friends to transport. The X5 xDrive40d M Sport is no less sluggish than it is comfortable or well equipped. Thanks to its 313bhp, 5.9 seconds will be all it takes from 0-62mph, yet still returning an impressive 47.1mpg. It was love at first sight for me – a BMW that fits my lifestyle and my family. There is no need for compromise here – the X5 has it all. Comfort, practicality, technology, safety and that all-important little bit of luxury that let’s face it makes for the ‘ultimate driving machine’.

miles of gorgeous beaches. With the castle sitting 166m above sea level, it’s a good old walk, but definitely worth it for the stunning views across the harbour. If hiking’s not your thing though there is a lift up through the hill the castle is set on. For only €2.70 your legs may thank you afterwards!

Climb the ‘Penon de Ifach’ Full of sleepy side streets, lazy tapas bars and two beautiful churches (which are certainly worth a visit) the town of Calpe is dominated by an imposing rocky outcrop known as the ‘Rock of Ifach’. Rising dramatically from the sea, at 332m high, it can be seen for miles along the coast in either direction and is a truly spectacular sight. Guided tours are available and qualified and experienced guides will take your party up to the top. It takes about an hour, but is well worth the exertion simply for the unforgettable view.

Relax on the beach in Benidorm Benidorm’s fine, sandy beaches spread for about four kilometres, sloping gently into the Mediterranean. Playa Levante is known as the sunrise beach and is the ideal spot for enjoying some early morning swimming or sunbathing, with plenty of bars and restaurants to hand. Playa Poniente is more popular with locals and visitors looking for a quiet time. There are less amenities but the trade-off is the beauty of a Mediterranean beach with just a few less people about. Ryanair operates the service from Newquay to Alicante twice weekly between April and October (Wednesdays and Sundays).

What a show! We relive another fantastic weekend at this year’s Home and Lifestyle Show at the Royal Cornwall Showground.

lways a highlight on our calendar, the Cornwall Living team eagerly headed off to the Royal Cornwall Showground to enjoy another fantastic home show event. This year’s first show, held on 30th April and 1st May 2016, didn’t fail to impress. The Home and Lifestyle Show 2016 has undoubtedly been one of the most talked about events across Cornwall, increasingly recognised as a premium home and garden event, drawing crowds from across the county to grab a little slice of Cornwall. This year saw around 4000 attendees flock to the site to look around almost 150 stalls, including sponsors Nine Design, Duke Stone of Cornwall and Elite Spas. The show is acknowledged for its exceptional interior goods, gardens, renewable services and self-build assistance. The seminars held throughout the weekend proved a hit, enabling visitors to get a deeper understanding of some of the newest and best value products available. And once again, the ever-popular ‘A Bite of Cornwall’ food and drink market and café showcased the delicious artisan produce from around the county. Awareness keeps on growing, year on year. “Thanks for a great event”, says Katherine Moore of Bradworthy. “It’s the first time

we have heard about it, but we met some brilliant people and saw some fantastic products which we’ll be using going forward with our building projects.” Meanwhile show sponsor Nine Design says: “We had a fantastic time exhibiting at the Cornwall Home and Lifestyle Show, we met some great potential clients and it was great to see what talent Cornwall has to offer.” Home Show Managing Director Andrew Weaver adds: “I would like to thank all that supported the event, our 4000 visitors, 146 exhibitors and sponsors. It was without a doubt the best yet in our six-year history and we’re looking forward to building on this for the future. Again thanks to everyone involved!” But if you missed the weekend, don’t worry! There are plenty more events coming up to enjoy, including the Home and Lifestyle Show Interior Market on 9th and 10th September, and the Cornwall Home Improvement and Self-Build Show on 1st and 2nd October. Keep a look out in Cornwall Living and visit the website for more information over the coming months.

Advice

Taxing

times

Stephens Scown’s Tracey Wright reveals a government approved investment scheme that is highly tax efficient

I

t’s ever a hot topic in our media, yet whilst the moral stance on tax avoidance is a subjective one, it should be remembered that it’s the fundamental right of every UK taxpayer to arrange their affairs in a tax efficient way. This is where The Enterprise Investments Scheme (EIS) comes in – a government approved initiative which, using a similar concept to the ‘Dragons Den’ TV programme, offers individuals generous tax reliefs for investing in unquoted trading companies. Smaller companies pitch their ideas for capital growth in return for cash investments. The EIS has been around for over 30 years and is the government’s flagship tax saving opportunity. The government considers that fledgling companies offer the greatest opportunity to generate economic prosperity, offering tax relief to investing taxpayers. Included in the relief is inheritance tax (IHT) business property relief, which, after owning shares for at least two years, will be available at a rate of 100%, effectively exempting your EIS shares from IHT. We can see how this works in practise.

Case study John Stone invests £100,000 in Micro Genes Limited, which is a company manufacturing machines to detect genetic deficiencies in unborn babies. John acquires 5% of the company’s ordinary share capital. John’s gross income is £200,000. In the past two years John has realised capital gains of £100,000 (after deducting his annual exemptions). Sadly, three years after making his investments John passes away. Following John’s death, the shares will pass in accordance with his will. If John had set up a trust in his will to act as a recipient of the shares this may have saved further inheritance tax for his family. It may have also offered his family protection against potential matrimonial and financial disputes happening in the future. The benefits of buying into EIS shares speak for themselves so to learn more about the scheme and efficiently arrange your affairs, contact Stephens Scown Solicitors.

Cornwall in literature Jackie Harding of Truro College uncovers the links to Cornwall that can be found throughout literature.

A

é ABOVE Jackie Harding ì ABOVE INSET Poetry workshop at Truro College student Claire O'Hagan ì MAIN Taking inspiration from the beautiful Cornish landscape

lthough Cornwall is most often associated with visual art and surfing, its literary heritage is equally exciting. Writers have always been drawn to our romantic coasts and desolate moorland. Jackie Harding, a published journalist and teacher at Truro College uncovers the links to Cornwall that can be found throughout literature. “Daniel Defoe toured the wilderness of the Cornish peninsula at around the time he was writing one of the first English novels, Robinson Crusoe”, says Jackie. “Is it too farfetched to suggest that footprints on a remote Cornish beach led him to Man Friday?” Jackie continues: “The mythical otherness of Cornwall was picked up by aristocratic Victorian writers Tennyson and Swinburne who took advantage of the new railways to explore Cornwall, now an accessible wilderness, a shortcut to the sublime. Tennyson developed the myth of King Arthur at Tintagel and Swinburne heard the echoes of knights’ tournaments in the wind coming off the wild seas. “Dylan Thomas was married in Cornwall and listeners can hear voices from the intricate network of cottages and alleyways in Mousehole in the lyrical realism of Under Milk Wood. While living near Zennor during World War One, D H Lawrence and his German wife Frieda were accused of spying but that did not prevent him from writing short stories inspired by his observations of

the landscape and people around him. “Daphne du Maurier’s novels draw tourists from around the world who want to trace the footsteps of the naïve Rebecca and the murderous wrecker Joss Merlyn. More recently Poldark draws those in search of romance.” Playwrights, actors, filmmakers and novelists seeking a creative space continue to throng to Cornwall. At St Ives Arts Club every Thursday evening writers and musicians gather to perform their work at the Frug. Writers from Truro and Penwith College, who are studying Creative Writing as part of a degree in English Literature, brave the stage and share their work in the very room where the young Virginia Woolf gazed at her lighthouse and where artists have gathered to share their ideas since 1890. Jackie Harding graduated from the University of London in 1987 and has worked as an English teacher for over 25 years. She is interested in the cultural construction of place and the creation of identity. Jackie has experience as a published journalist and teaches on the FdA English Studies university course at Truro College. The Lost Gardens of Heligan: 200 acres of history, mystery, intrigue and romance.

T

wenty-five years ago, Heligan’s historic gardens were unknown and unseen, lost under a tangle of weeds. It was only the chance discovery of a door in the ruins that led to the restoration of this once great estate. Today, the Lost Gardens have been put back where they belong: in pride of place among the finest gardens in Britain. Throughout the year, The Lost Gardens have a jam-packed schedule of events and captivating stories to enthral and entice their inter-generational audience, with this summer positively bursting at the seams! Heligan is home to the finest productive garden in Britain and is intensively cultivated throughout the year. The gardens and estate once met almost all the needs of the Tremayne family and their guests; with only fresh fish being sourced from the local harbour of Mevagissey. Today, over 300 varieties of mostly heritage fruit, vegetables and herbs are lovingly tended to supply the Heligan Kitchen with fresh, seasonal produce. Whilst most people talk in ‘food miles’, Heligan pride themselves in ‘food yards’, 157 yards from soil to plate to be exact; it doesn’t get much fresher than that!

June kicks off with a breath-taking explosion of colour, as The Lost Gardens of Heligan welcome back their mesmerising Field of Remembrance, taking the form of a boundless sea of delicate blood red, poppies. The spectacle was created on the Estate’s West Lawn, as a beacon to remind us of all those lost in the Great War and is set to bloom each summer until 2018, in line with the WWI centenary. It truly is a sight like no other and is one not to be missed. To complement this floral extravaganza a stunning display of indigo linseed flower will be in bloom in the adjacent Valentines Field, which is set to grace the senses throughout July and August, promising to be a real feast for the eyes, as well as celebrating one of Britain’s ‘lost’ crops. This June, Father’s Day is set to have more steam, beer and barbeque food than ever before with two jam-packed days instead of one. June also sees Heligan welcoming back Cornwall’s Miracle Theatre with a reputation for producing fresh and truthful adaptions, guaranteeing inspiring entertainment that can be enjoyed by all. The audience is invited to bring a picnic, share a glass of wine and sit back and enjoy the show in the magical atmosphere of

the Lost Gardens, set against the stunning backdrop of ancient rhododendrons. Following the theatre theme, this summer will see the irrepressible Kneehigh Theatre return to The Lost Gardens for their third consecutive year, with their award-winning, spirit-lifting nomadic theatre space, the Asylum. They bring with them a chance for friends old and new to enjoy world-class theatre, delicious food and drink, live music and a good old-fashioned Kneehigh knees-up. Kneehigh bring you not one, not two but three exciting new shows; The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk, FUP and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Entry to the gardens is free for Kneehigh show ticket holders from 6pm on performance nights, but should you wish to spend longer exploring, combined tickets are available allowing you to enjoy the 200 acres at your leisure. The Lost Summer once again runs for the duration of the summer holidays and encapsulates the essence of our childhood memories and our parents’ before us. This summer The Lost Gardens brings memories of old into the moment, with a summer of outdoor play, den building, bushcraft, trails through magical woodlands, toasting marshmallows around smouldering campfires and wild adventures out and about in the great British outdoors.

There have been numerous changes throughout Heligan over the past year and a few projects due to be completed, such as the reopening of The Ravine, set for July. Here the old watercourses have been re-established, returning the sound of running water to the Northern Gardens. New plantings along the rocky landscape are set to provide a real summer spectacle. The Jungle and The Lost Valley have been connected for the first time in Heligan’s history and linked with a new boardwalk, taking you through a wealth of new and exotic plantings. Gardeners’ Question Time will be a new feature this summer and is a unique opportunity to get your gardening questions answered by the Heligan Gardening Team. The team welcome gardening enthusiasts of all abilities to join them in the historic Melon Yard, for an informal and fun Q&A session with gardeners from both the Productive and Ornamental Gardening Teams.

Got to visit... FOODIE PADSTOW

Padstow has long held a reputation as a top foodie destination on the north coast, and it continues that tradition with two fantastic eateries definitely worth checking out: The Basement, and Embers. Recently opened in the centre of town with its modern industrial style, Embers has brought a new exiting eating experience to Padstow with a more informal approach, producing artisan, hand-rolled Neapolitan style pizza freshly baked in the wood-fired oven they call “the big orange”. Enjoy a range of sides to accompany your pizza and finish your meal with one of the homemade gelatos or sorbets from the Padstow Ice Cream Company. It’s open seven days a week, noon until 9.30pm (9pm on Sunday). Right on the harbour, The Basement has been established for thirteen years and has a fantastic reputation for serving a British menu from morning to evening meal using local produce in a smart contemporary space from its open kitchen. From its Mediterranean style outside covered eating area you can sample al fresco dining at its best with a welcome that matches the amazing food and setting. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 9am to 11pm.

GET SET FOR A SEAFOOD LUNCH AT RICK STEIN’S FISH IN FALMOUTH

ENJOY FOOD WITH A VIEW AT ST ENODOC HOTEL With an endless supply of quality, local produce to draw from, St Enodoc Hotel is offering some of the finest local cuisine on this summer’s lunch and dinnertime menus. Let the talented winner of Master Chef James Nathan tempt your taste buds as you drink in the views over the Camel estuary. Fuel up before you hit the coast path or take a load off after a sunny stroll on the surrounding sandy beaches and tuck into to one of their fresh, locally sourced crab sandwiches. Hop on the foot-ferry to Padstow – a short walk from St Enodoc – and explore one of Cornwall’s most beautiful fishing ports, or try your hand at golf at the world-class golf course. There are excellent watersports available at Rock too, with Porthilly beach and Daymer bay both nearby. What’s more, you can make the most of one of St Enodoc’s private dining rooms when there’s cause for celebration, where you can enjoy a menu that focuses itself on modern, fresh and healthy European recipes.

With the season for seafood now in full swing, we who frequent the coastal culinary scene are spoilt for choice. Whether it’s mussels, mornay or chowder, we all fall victim to food envy when we see the greener grass of what our fellow diners are eating. And where better to do so than at Hooked on the Rocks, overlooking Swanpool Beach and the blue, blue waters of Falmouth Bay? Good news for those who love a long, lazy lunch or dinner: Hooked on the Rocks has just launched a new summer menu. Expect exciting new flavours, such as: pork, chorizo and butterbean stew; aubergine and tomato tacos; oyster with cucumber granita; and in-house pickled mussels. Ned, the local fisherman, will be keeping the restaurant’s crab and lobster tank topped up, so you can handpick your shellfish before you dine; it doesn’t get much fresher than that.

Specials boards are updated regularly with meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, allowing the talented chefs to take full advantage of seasonality and local Cornish produce. SADDLE UP We are treated to a delicious meal using rabbit, a tasty yet underappreciated meat.

A

dam Cawood, Head Chef at Mevagissey’s Trevalsa Court shares his recipe for rabbit saddle stuffed with chestnut mushrooms, and served with baby gem, spring veg and grape salsa. “Rabbit is personal favourite of mine”, says Adam, “especially this dish, which uses fresh seasonal spring veg. You can get your rabbit from most good local butchers but with some you may have to pre order them but a good rabbit will be worth it. Try to also get the butcher to prep the saddle for you as well as this can be a fiddley job for people not comfortable with knives. If you get the legs included with your prepared saddles, save them in the freezer for the winter months for a heart-warming rabbit stew.”

From then

TO NOW

We find out how this stand-out-from-the-crowd street food venue has evolved in just two years.

C

raftworks Kitchen humbly began its journey after the purchase of a shiny, 1966 American Airstream trailer back in 2014. Starting with pop-up events, they made a presence at events such as Boardmasters, the Masked Ball and Polo on the Beach at Watergate Bay, alongside many weddings, to make for an incredibly busy first year. Next, Craftworks Street Kitchen opened in July 2015 on Lemon Quay in Truro, when the company overtook the former HUBBOX site. After six weeks of refurbishing the shipping container and splashing it with the standalone Craftworks branding, the company began delivering global street food to the taste buds of Truro – inspired by their travels and vast background in the restaurant industry – and have been wowing locals ever since. The Kitchen team is small but well oiled, with a vast combined number of years’ experience in the industry. Their popularity is ever growing, which is testament to the productive partnership between owner and Head Chef Daniel Brightman and his business partner Mick Warren. The pair have worked together on

successful projects in the past, including the opening of a restaurant in the Alps which is still going strong! The outside space at the Street Kitchen is fantastic, with tables in the sunshine overlooking the cathedral able to seat more than 40. They source their produce from local suppliers, such as Baker Toms and Roche Butchers, which Daniel believes is key to their success. The kitchen has a passion for craft beers, using Cornish suppliers like the Harbour Brewing Company and Firebrand, as well as some further afield, in order to satisfy customers with the bestbrewed beverages available. More recently, the Kitchen has taken on Gio Villada, a chef whose background in the trade takes him all the way back to his hometown in Columbia. Gio’s South American roots reflect in his food, fusing aromatic, sensational flavours and adding something special to the already broad spectrum of cuisine available at Craftworks Kitchen. The Kitchen opens seven days a week, 11am to 8pm and 11am to 4pm on Sundays, also offering a takeaway service.

GEM Discover Castaways, a delightful bistro in a beautiful setting in Mylor Yacht Harbour.

ĂŽ BELOW Stunning views across Mylor Harbour and excellent cuisine make Castaways a must-visit destination

T

ucked away in the north western corner of the Fal estuary lies one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets. Mylor Harbour is just a few miles from Falmouth, easily accessed whether by car or boat. With sweeping views across the Carrick Roads towards Trelissick House it combines the hustle and bustle of a busy marina and boatyard with the beauty and serenity of the striking south Cornish coastline. Often thought to be the preserve of the yachting and fishing communities, Mylor is

surprisingly welcoming to everyone, hosting a choice of restaurants and abundant waterborne activities; the perfect setting to enjoy a refreshing drink or meal overlooking the gently bobbing boats on the water. In the midst of it all sits a true gem: Castaways is an Italian influenced bistro perched on the old naval quay with stunning views across the harbour and beyond. It offers a wide ranging choice of mouth-watering dishes to suit all ages and tastes; from locally landed fish to Cornish

steaks as well as pizzas and pasta dishes. Lighter bites, including a most delicious crab sandwich, are also available. The bistro is at the start of a delightful walk from Mylor to Flushing and dogs are made most welcome with treats often offered to our well-behaved four-legged friends. Castaways East, a pub, situated in the old naval mess hall adjacent to the main Castaways bistro is taking on a Spanish theme for the upcoming season. The team will be offering Mediterranean dishes of

paella and tapas, washed down with Spanish wines and sangria, as well as a selection of local and craft beers. Castaways East opens for the summer season in early June.

Weddings in Mylor Both Castaways and Castaways East are available for weddings, corporate events and private parties. The highly experienced team of chefs love working with the happy couple to produce your perfect menu. Parties in excess of one hundred people can be catered for, while Castaways East can play host to more intimate gatherings. Natalie and Phil chose Castaways as their venue of choice to celebrate their big day in June last year. “We just wanted to say a massive thank you to the whole of the team at Castaways”, says Natalie. “You all did such an amazing job. The room looked amazing, the service was prompt, nothing was too much trouble… I could go on and on!” Phil adds: “We had the best day ever and without all of you it wouldn't have been possible.” Whatever the time of year, and whatever the occasion, a trip to Mylor is always worthwhile and you can be sure of a warm welcome in Castaways or Castaways East.

g i BFLAVOURS We enjoy sumptuous seafood, splendid wines and delicious desserts at Ben’s Cornish Kitchen.

O

n a calm and clear evening, Marazion is the perfect spot to watch a Cornish sunset. As the light fades and the sea turns silver, the imposing St Michael’s Mount – accessible only by boat or the stretch of cobbled causeway – is silhouetted against the sky. On less clear evenings – as my partner, R, and I discovered – sea mist rolls in around the Mount, shrouding it in white, while

ë ABOVE Chocolate, salt caramel and peanut ice cream í BELOW Crispy monkfish cheeks

lights faintly blink in the castle windows. This was eerie, mesmerising; if we didn’t get the sunset, at least we got the atmosphere. In fact, weather like this complemented the Cornish folklore associated with St Michael’s Mount; a giant, the terrible Cormoran, is said to have once made the island his home. But it wasn’t giant legends that had drawn us to Marazion; we had heard rumours of big flavours and were headed to Ben’s Cornish Kitchen. We were met at the door by our waitress for the evening, who showed us to a table on the first floor of the small and relaxed restaurant. R sat looking out to sea – framed by the window, the Mount looked impressively huge – and I sat where I could take in the room. Large-scale, colourful artworks are set off against exposed, stone walls and empty wine bottles are arranged into sculptures; the effect is playfully stylish, not too try-hard, reflective of the ethos of the restaurant. Courtesy of the well-stocked bar, I began with the aperitif of the night, an Elderflower Royale, while R went for a Peroni. Once we had ordered we were offered freshly made fennel and seed rolls, divine with lots of butter and a good indication of the feast to follow.

ì ABOVE The majestic St Michael’s Mount í BELOW Whole lobster with garlic and herb butter

Our starters arrived promptly. For me, it was crispy monkfish cheeks, pea salad and tartare. Until that moment I had never considered a monkfish – or any sort of fish – to have cheeks! They turned out to be delicious, sweet and like a scallop in texture. Smoked duck breast, confit leg, pickled rhubarb and blood orange was R’s choice; the highlight was the rhubarb and herb dressing, tangy in taste and rosy in colour, perfect with the smoked meat. Head Chef Ben Prior’s menu revolves around seasonal produce; the restaurant orders little and often to keep everything as fresh as possible. That evening we were lucky enough to experience just how locally sourced the food is: during the day some lobsters had been brought in, caught just a stone’s throw away. My lobster was served whole: all wild antennae and ruby red shell. It was soft and buttery in the middle – “melt in the mouth,” as R said – while the tail was firm and meaty. Our waitress recommended I pair the dish up with a glass of crisp and peachy Austrian Gruner Veltlner, which was excellent with the sweet lobster. R also opted for a fish main course, unusual for him, but I think the by-the-sea setting demanded it: pan roast hake, creamy and golden saffron risotto topped with new season asparagus. Pudding was a must (after a small break). R went for the lemon and lime posset,

tamarillo and basil compote, served with vanilla biscuits. Light and refreshing, this was a clever way to end his meal and the tamarillo – also known as a tree-tomato – was new and intriguing to us. For me, it had to be the chocolate pave, a plateful of some of my favourite flavours: dense and velvety chocolate, sticky salt caramel sauce and roasted peanut ice cream. The dessert wine recommendation was a South African Muskadel, a lovely deep pink and berry sweet, delicious! Ben’s Cornish Kitchen is a family venture: Ben is joined in the kitchen by his brother Toby, the man behind the desserts, and they describe Jayne, their mother, as ‘the glue’. The restaurant is wonderfully put together: from the colourful and seasonal flavours on the menu, to the thoughtful pairing of each dish with a glass of wine and the excellent and friendly service. Warm, content and full of good food, we thanked the team and went back out into the night. The mizzle had stopped, the sea mist had lifted and on St Michael’s Mount the castle was floodlit and golden: a magical end to our evening.

In the world of all things foodie, Bystro at the Bank is definitely in right now, and we believe it’s here to stay. We all love one-plate wonders – dishes we can cook quickly, with exceptional taste and a flash of colour. The team at Bystro pride themselves on filling the restaurant

and taking clean plates back to the kitchen, constantly striving to be the best at what they do. The work, according to the chefs, is in the prep and they start every day just before lunch, getting the kitchen ready for service, making fresh bread and cooking everything to order. Everything they do speaks ‘fine dining’, yet they’ve mastered the art with an impressive combination of simplicity and expert delivery. Sourcing their ingredients

The freshest fruit, veg and produce delivered direct from Food Box Farm.

any dream of escaping the hustle and bustle of London for a slower pace of life in Cornwall, surrounded by miles of beautiful coastline and rolling hills. But unfortunately for many it remains just that: a dream. For Tara and Gareth the new owners of Food Box Farm, however, the calling was too great to resist, and they eventually took the plunge. Following many great motorhoming holidays to Gwithian in west Cornwall, enjoying the extensive local Cornish produce on offer, an opportunity came up that was simply unmissable and they moved down this year with their two boys. But London’s loss is our gain, as Food Box Farm expands its range, continuing to showcase the fabulous produce grown, reared, baked, brewed and caught right here in Cornwall. Relocating the businesss from Gunwalloe to Long Rock in Penzance, Tara and Gareth have created a new website, and take great pleasure in discovering new local suppliers to call on. “When in season we source local veg and fruit from producers within west Cornwall”, explains Tara. “Strawberries from Hayle; courgettes, rainbow chard, cherries and peppers from Gulval; and new potatoes, spring cabbage and cauliflower from Leedstown. Veg is cut in the morning and on

Meanwhile, the bakery provides a wide range of wonders freshly-baked to order, from soda bread right through to a traditional Victoria sponge cake, not to mention excellent pasties for those after a true taste of Cornwall. Food Box Farm provides a fantastic service to west Cornwall delivering veg boxes, weekly shop boxes and many items direct to customer’s front doors, free to all TR postcodes when spending over £30. C

ornwall is often the destination of choice for UK holiday goers looking to escape the hustle and bustle, in search of that little slice of paradise. And it’s not hard to see why. But what do you do if you already live in Cornwall? The answer is simple – you head to the Isles of Scilly! My wife and I decided to do just that this spring. Scilly has all the qualities beloved of Cornwall, while carrying a rugged charm and unique identity entirely of its own. Having visited both Bryher and Tresco in recent years – and fallen in love on each occasion – we felt it was time to get to know St Martin’s. And what a decision that turned out to be! Combining the best bits of the other islands, St Martin’s is simply paradise found: hills, small woodlands, moorland, dramatic cliffs, long powdery white sand beaches, translucent turquoise seas and views that will take your breath away, leaving you standing there with your jaw on the floor. We have found our favourite island; a paradise just 28 miles from the Cornish coast, with a demanding travel time of 15 minutes! Arrival on the small jetty saw a welcome by three of the team from our hotel, Karma St Martin’s, who efficiently unloaded our luggage into the small van and drove it the 50 yards to the front door! Scott was

charming and welcoming – it felt as though we floated through the reception area to a soft brown leather armchair, welcomecocktail and a personal concierge’s guide to the hotel, dinner, breakfast and the island. To be honest, I didn’t hear a word as we sat in awe of the view. Once we had finished our drink Scott re-appeared as if by magic to show us to our room – attentive, but no pressure. The room was immaculate with intricate Balinese wallpapers selected by designer Tina Driscoll. Karma Group’s business started in Bali and India and is spreading to Europe with plans of luxury resorts to come. Our superior ocean view room was perfect – modern, comfortable and with every luxury you could hope for. My wife’s excitement at the mesmerising vista from the window said it all! With very few cars on the island, St Martin’s really is a world away from the mainland – a true idyll to escape it all. We timed our visit to coincide with the Walk Scilly Festival, making the most of the rare opportunity to get closer to nature and to ourselves. The festival is held every year in April, followed by a Walk Scilly Weekend in October (look out for our upcoming feature soon). We enjoyed an enlightening foraging walk with expert Rachel Lambert,

On our travels, we also passed Churchtown Farm, home to Scilly Flowers – an inspiring industry now sending 90,000 bunches of flowers to Cornwall, the UK and beyond. Call in to meet the friendly team and send a ‘wish you were here’ gift home (they will wish they were there when they see your photos!). Of course, after each day exploring, you want nothing more than to retreat to the perfect sanctuary. With so much having made an impression on our minds, the bar had been set very high. Fortunately Karma St Martin’s exceeded every expectation. It’s the little touches that make the difference. Every guest is given a ‘wine card’ with £100 credit (billed to the room if used), allowing you to sample top wines from the

later being treated to a gourmet foraging dinner, back at the hotel. The rock samphire tempura served with gorse flower relish was divine! Check out Rachel’s book, Wild Food Foraging in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, for some fantastic ideas. Walking around St Martin’s is a real treat, whichever direction you choose to take – it’s just about big enough to lose yourself for the day but not big enough to get lost. We found plenty to explore over a few days on the island, meandering round the paths and trails to discover view after view after view. You can’t visit the island without making the trek to the iconic daymark erected north east of St Martin’s in 1683 by Thomas Ekins – it’s an awe-inspiring walk, with 360-degree views across Chapel Down. No countryside walk is complete without a pit stop in a proper traditional pub. Thankfully, we were lucky enough to stumble upon the Seven Stones Inn, a lovely stone building offering a good pint and quite possibly the best view from a pub garden anywhere in the UK. (Look out for our upcoming feature with owners Emily and Dominic to find out about their move from the mainland.) It was also a delight to meet Fay Page in her studio and workshop. Fay makes amazing silver charms and jewellery all inspired by the islands – worth a visit just to hear the tale of the whale on the beach and to see the subsequent charm she produced.

cabinet, before choosing a whole bottle – an inspired idea, and the Pomerol gets my vote! Then there’s the record player linked to the Sonos system in the wine lounge, where you can pick from the hotel’s owner John Spence’s personal vinyl collection. And, if you’re here for some rest and recuperation, then a treatment in the luxury spa will do just the trick. The hotel’s restaurant is the perfect spot to watch the sun go down, but it wasn’t just the view that impressed. A chef once told me that you can judge any restaurant based on whether they are brave enough to offer crème brulee on the menu. Well, Karma St Martin’s certainly rose to the challenge – the consistency, presentation, taste, enjoyment and pure indulgence of the dessert was symbolic of every single aspect of the experience on offer at Karma St Martin’s. It’s something that Ashley, the General Manager, and his young and delightful team are working hard to maintain and improve across the board. Obviously improving on perfection is very hard to do, but I think they might just do it.

If you happen to be planning a wedding, I’m hard pressed to think of a more sublime location; the Honeymoon Suite, Tean Conference Suite, and the beach below make the perfect trio for your big day – see our upcoming Romantic Scilly feature for the full review. Karma St Martin’s is a truly fantastic hotel – it exudes luxury, style and elegance all within the most spectacular of settings. It really needs to be visited to be believed – it is a little corner of heaven on the water's edge. Another favourite was Dibble and Grub on Porthcressa beach, St Mary’s. Here we savoured the last taste of paradise sat with a glass of sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio, a salad, wrap or sandwich (I love the lamb souvlaki in pitta), watching the sea and wishing we could stay forever. Inevitably, all good things must come to an end, and with heavy hearts but lighter feet, it was time to head home. Words really don’t do justice to the majesty of Scilly – it has to be experienced. Upon arrival, you feel all your stresses and strains quickly melting away quicker than the ice cubes in your freshly prepared cocktail. Our biggest conundrum now is finding time to plan our next visit!

f you’re feeling nostalgic for old, authentic Cornwall, for the peace of times gone by, the charming village of Port Isaac is the perfect place to visit, relax and stay… all with the added bonus of some lovely shops, independent galleries and fantastic eateries, including two restaurants run by Michelin starred Nathan Outlaw. The fishing village, with its white washed cottages and picturesque harbour, is also a popular filming location. If this sounds like your ideal escape, tucked away in the heart of the village you’ll find Trevan House: the perfect base from which to explore. The spacious cottage, once the village doctor’s residence, has been elegantly restored and stylishly furnished; the beamed ceilings downstairs are typical of the fisherman’s cottages found in the village, while upstairs the rooms are more grand and bright. It can sleep up to ten guests in four bedrooms, offering a great getaway for families or a group of friends. The cottage is just a stone’s throw away from Port Isaac’s magical harbour and sandy beach. As the waters retreat, an abundance of rock pools are revealed; shells and treasures

can be collected along the tideline. The coastal path meanders from the village, past Port Gaverne and on to Tintagel Castle, home to the legendary King Arthur. Or, just a tenminute drive away, is Polzeath Beach. Here the long, slow-breaking and consistent waves are great for beginner and avid surfers alike – you might even share the experience with the occasional dolphin or seal. After a long day walking, surfing or relaxing on the beach, retreat back to Trevan House, where the secluded and unusually large garden provides an oasis of calm. Take in the evening sun with a family barbeque or al fresco drinks and dinner. After eating, head down to the harbour front where, during the long summer evenings, local singers The Fisherman’s Friends perform their rousing sea shanties and Cornish folk songs, sure to be a memorable and haunting experience.

Holiday

Beat the bustle

Out of season is the new in, so take a short, relaxing, pre-summer break at Mawgan Porth.

H

olidaying in Cornwall, with the spectacular coastline and rolling countryside on your doorstep, is simply unbeatable, yet contending with the humdrum and traffic of peak season can often taint an otherwise perfect trip. Taking a short break just out of season at The Park in Mawgan Porth takes some beating, with locales such as Watergate Bay, Padstow as well as the South West Coast Path on your doorstep, opening up an array of exploring opportunities in some of the most stunning areas of the region. The range of accommodation available alone is enough to inspire a self-catered, out-of-season retreat. The Park is home to houses, yurts and airstreams – ranging from 1950s trailers to nomadic shelters and offering a bespoke, glamping experience – as well as cottages, family caravans, summer houses and lodges – perfect for a romantic getaway. Some even boast a hot tub, with many enjoying enclosed garden spaces. And, for those gazey moments spent staring up at the unspoiled Cornish sky, there is an outdoor, wood-fired pizza oven and fire-pit to be found in the yurt village. What’s more, if you have a four-leggedfamily member you think might benefit from some fresh, country air, then you’re in luck as many of the homes are dog friendly and, as we’re sure your hound will be delighted to hear, so is the beach, so you and your furry friend can lap up the Cornish coast together. A day on the beach is enough to whet any appetite, so take a break in The Kitchen, the onsite café that serves a tantalising menu, including breakfast, lunch and dinner and guarantees you that hit-the-spot feeling, after combing the local geography for its serene seascapes and jaw-dropping views. As well as all this, The Park has a range of activities for all ages to enjoy, including a heated indoor pool, sauna and steam room, in which the out of season wayfarer can take a load off and relax. So, if beating the bustle of peak season sounds like your idea of a perfect pre-summer retreat, give The Park, Cornwall a visit.

Winding Down The Reynolds family find that wherever you are in Cornwall, it’s good to take it easy.

T

o experience the slower pace is a little strange if I’m honest, though not unwelcome. Once we’re over the Tamar, I look to my husband, Zackary, then to the dog, Aston, who’s panting in my ear. A few days abroad seemed like too much hassle – kennels, too pricey, and the last time I left Aston, I spent the first hours of our getaway in near inconsolable tears. Fondly scratching at his ear, I can’t help but grin like an idiot. This feels like our first family holiday together. We reach Polperro in the mid afternoon and waste no time settling in and exploring the area. It is a beautiful fishing village that hugs the harbour and is a world away from the city that we’ve travelled from. We’re up early the next day, before sunrise and walk the coastline to Lantic Bay. The sun begins to tint the dark, starry vista as we reach the coast path; we light up our torches and carefully make our way along the path. Travelling the coastal path at dawn is just exquisite. The air is fresh, the scene is awe-inspiring, the world awakes with sound and there’s not a soul in sight. When we reach Lantic Bay via a

sharp descent which Aston has no trouble negotiating, the sun is fully up against a sky of wisps of cloud. Aston bounds across the sand like a pup while Zack and I create a makeshift breakfast from a few things we had bought in the village and some ripe blackberries we have picked along the path. Zack casts his fishing line, not in the hope of catching anything, but just because it seems like the right thing to do. We have been warned about rip currents here so we keep Aston happily entertained in the shallows. We spend the entire day at the bay, not once feeling bored in this beautifully secluded place. More out of necessity than want, we make our way back to Polperro in the late afternoon to negotiate the five miles of coastline to a pub in the village and a wellearned pint. Rather reluctantly, we leave the peaceful village and inch our way along the coast towards the Roseland Peninsula where we are to spend a few days camping, following the river and ambling round the small picturesque settlements. The last leg of our journey takes us

north to a place that has intrigued my partner since he started traipsing through the Internet: Chysauster Village and it’s surrounding area of ancient stonework. We begin with a bite to eat at Lanyon Farm Tea Room before strolling over to Chûn Castle and Chûn Quoit, the Iron Age hillfort. Chûn Quoit is an eerie place, believed to have been used for communal burials during the Neolithic period. The views from here are tremendous with plenty of room for Aston to entertain himself. Strolling across the open, wind beaten fields then along the road we find ourselves at Mên-an-Tol, one of the best-known megalithic structures in Britain, with the least known about it. The mystery of this place alone makes it feel special. Then it’s on to Ding Dong Mine, one of the oldest in Cornwall and Lanyon Quoit, which is beautifully photogenic. After an afternoon strolling over the calming land, we toddle back to the tearoom for a little respite from the blustery day. As we head back over the Tamar, quietly content and relaxed, Aston snoozes on the back seat and I kick myself for not travelling with him sooner. We saved money, didn’t worry about leaving our dog at home, and, most importantly, all three of us had a lot of fun!

the Longships Lighthouse. Past the Cape, you reach Priest’s Cove, where a natural swimming pool at low tide provides a safe area for wave shy doggy paddlers. This walk starts and finishes in the old mining town of St Just. It passes through an area once heavily mined for tin and copper, passing a number of historic mining sites, and then along the coast to the major landmark of Cape Cornwall. It then continues along the coast past an important prehistoric site before returning to St Just via Nanquidno, where the lush subtropical vegetation is alive with wildflowers and birdsong in spring and with migrant birds feasting on the berries in autumn. A good walk for children, who will love the romance of the old mining landscape.

"When it comes to dog walks, we’re spoilt for choice on the South West Coast Path”, says Monty. “There are miles and miles of breath-taking routes to explore with your dog, not to mention great dogfriendly beaches and pubs along the way. My dog, Reuben, a black Alsatian/Newfoundland cross, is its biggest fan – one sniff of the South West Coast Path and he’s away!” So, why not go explore yourself? Here’s a fantastic dog walk, as recommended by our friends at South West Coast Path.

our favourite dog-friendly gardens We’ve selected a few of Cornwall’s stunning gardens that are perfect for walkies, so take our lead and get tails wagging…

Trewidden Garden Situated near Penzance and accessed directly from the A30, this beautiful and inviting woodland garden is planted on the site of an ancient mine. Trewidden has a large nationally acclaimed collection of luscious magnolias, over 300 different species of colourful camellias and a majestic collection of tree ferns, one of the finest in the northern hemisphere.

Eden Project

with you. Humans and dogs alike can enjoy the tearoom, where a new lunch menu is being served up, together with cream teas, delicious homemade cakes and dog biscuits! TREWIDDEN GARDEN Buryas Bridge, Penzance TR19 6AU 01736 351979 01736 363021

The garden is a maze with visual treats at every turn or, for your four-legged friend, a labyrinth of exciting scents. Paths that meander through the 15-acre site will take you past the walled garden, a riot of bright flowers and busy with bees and butterflies; champion trees, recognised as some of the tallest, widest or most exceptional around; the Tree Fern Dell, set within an opencast tin mine; the tranquil Trewidden pond and much more.

The Eden Project really needs to be seen to be believed. And the great news is that the dog is welcome too! Four-legged visitors can explore miles of paths within the former china clay quarry and whilst they aren’t permitted in the Biomes or undercover areas, they are welcome in the Visitor Centre and can relax in designated outdoor undercover dining areas. Water and dog waste bins are also dotted across the super garden. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the whole site. www.edenproject.com

Discover the garden’s fascinating horticultural and mining history, while the free children’s trails are perfect for young adventurers. Cooling and pleasant on the paws, the garden is paradise for dogs during the summer months. At the shop you’ll find a variety of gifts and plants, so you can take a little piece of Trewidden home

Trebah Garden Lost Gardens of Heligan There’s no limit to the amount of fun that visitors of the wagging tail and wet nose variety can have at this famous garden; canine companions on best behaviour are given a yearround welcome and have over 200 acres to explore.

This ravine garden leads to a private beach on the Helford River so paws can get muddy, sandy and wet at the doggie haven of Trebah Garden. Poop scoops are available on arrival to take care of any ‘presents’. There are designated doggie tables in Planters Café, while the garden terrace and picnic areas are pooch-friendly refuel spots too. www.trebahgarden.co.uk

They’ll discover new smells galore in the Victorian Productive and Pleasure Gardens, will love the subtropical jungle and go mad for the ancient woodland. A well-timed post-walkies nap will ensure padding paws are clear of the no-go zones for dogs: the tearoom, Stewardry, shop and plant sales areas. www.heligan.com

Cheeky Pint With The Pup! Our choice of dog-friendly pubs.

The Victoria Inn Perranuthnoe The Victoria Inn at Perranuthnoe, reputedly one of the oldest inns in Cornwall (with parts dating back to the 12th century), remains a firm favourite among those who love a proper Cornish dining pub. It’s a peaceful, sheltered setting, nestled in the village just above the beach, with two stylish rooms available all year round. This popular inn has maintained the authentic, cosy feel of yesteryear that we all remember in a traditional pub. Nik Boyle and his wife Laura took over The Victoria Inn in 2014, following the mantra of using really good, local ingredients and keeping it simple. For Nik, Cornwall is home and representing it on the culinary map is a privilege. “We change the menu daily using the freshest ingredients. As a local boy I have known all our suppliers for most of my life: fish from Budgie in Porthleven, and eggs and meat from farms just down the road.” Most importantly, the pub is dog-friendly! So grab the lead, pull up a stool and sit down to a proper pint in good company. THE VICTORIA INN Perranuthnoe, Penzance TR20 9NP www.victoriainn-penzance.co.uk enquiries@victoriainnpz.uk

The Lemon Arms Fal river At the end of Mylor creek, situated on the coastal path that leads walkers along the pristine Fal river lies the Lemon arms. We highly recommend the menu as, not only does it cater to man’s best friend, it offers some of the most sensationallyseasonal cuisine around, including some delicious seafood. Our favourite is the delicately prepared spider crab, fresh from the harbour and perfect for a sunny afternoon bite as you rest your legs beween strolls. What’s more, on Sunday you’ll find a roast that’s second-to-none, complemented by a fine selection of the famous St Austell Brewery ales and beers to wash it down with. With miles of surrounding walking routes heading out from the village, the Lemon Arms team are incredibly dog friendly, with biscuits always on hand to welcome dogs into the pub, courtyard and beer garden. The best thing is, being so close to the coast, the pub situates itself in a location that’s perfect for bringing out the inner explorer in both you and your pawed pal. Hawkins Arms Probus Central to the village of Probus, the Hawkins Arms is the perfect pit stop for you and your furry friend as you comb the countryside surrounding the settlement. You’re bound to be thirsty by the time you hit the Hawkins, and you won’t be disappointed by the wide range of Cornish beverages, complete with a cask marque certificate of excellence for their beers. The inn has an impressive beer garden too, so while you tuck in to a home-cooked meal from the classic pub menu, your dog can enjoy the available treats whilst thoroughly investigating the surrounding flora. The Hawkins Arms plays host to regular live music and jam sessions, as well as pub quizzes and this July, they are holding a three-day beer and music festival from the 22nd to the 24th, the final day being a family day. So bring your kids and don’t forget the dog. The Hawkins always has something that no one will want to miss. THE HAWKINS ARMS 01726 882208 hawkinsarmsprobus@gmail.com

The Falmouth Arms Ladock The Falmouth Arms has remained true as Ladock’s local from the 17th century. Since then, many have stepped onto the flagstone floor underneath the low-beamed ceiling, warming their hands by the wood burner, appreciating the old England feel that, to this day, remains. Dogs have always been welcome. The well behaved are made to feel at home in either of the front bars as well as the inviting beer garden, with a jar of treats and fresh water available to keep the hounds happy. And, while you let sleeping dogs lie, you can take a fancy to the a la carte menu, washing it down with a large selection of Cornish beverages. Located close to Ladock woods, the Falmouth Arms is an ideal resting place for dog walkers. What’s more, it makes for a fun evening out, with a pub quiz every Monday evening from 9pm for those who like a challenge. THE FALMOUTH ARMS 01726 882319 www.thefalmoutharms.co.uk

n the dramatic and beautiful Lizard peninsula, nestled in a mature parkland setting, you’ll find Silver Sands Holiday Park. This peaceful spot is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing holiday with friends and family – including the fourlegged member! Touring, motorhome and camping pitches are pet friendly, as are some of the park’s holiday caravans. If paws get restless at any time of the day, Silver Sands has a oneacre field for running, fetching and rolling around in. Nearby is the wild and windswept moorland around Goonhilly Downs, a wonderful place to sniff and explore.

When the Cornish sun is out, there are few better places to enjoy it than at Kennack Sands. From Silver Sands, this lovely beach is just a short woodland walk away through the Lizard Nature Reserve. Kennack Sands is split into two and dogs are welcome on the eastern beach all year round; take the left turn along the coastal path and you’ll arrive there. The beach is sheltered and sandy and the blue waters are great for cooling toes and paws alike. Get in touch to plan your pet-friendly break. Jubilations Celebrations across Cornwall Care to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Celebrations

This year, Cornwall Care is celebrating its 20th anniversary as an independent Cornish charity, going all out to bring joy to residents and recognition to staff. They have already enjoyed a fabulous staff awards ceremony, some great home parties, Easter, and some brilliant entertainers, but they have lots more to come! You are welcome to join them – to find out more, visit: www.cornwallcare.com/events or contact: marketing@cornwallcare.org

er Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday on Thursday 21st April 2016 was a landmark in history and, for many, a fabulous reason to celebrate our country and its monarchy. Communities across the country made the most of the day, enjoying entertainment and festivities, getting involved in the community spirit and celebrating together. Cornwall Care residents and staff had a wonderful time dancing and singing, taking part in crown-making competitions, enjoying tea parties, indoor street parties, cakes, buffets, entertainment, music and much more. Residents enjoyed a mix of classic songs from their youth and working years, followed by movies of the Queen throughout the ages screened on the television that evening. Members of staff from Central Office also got involved, joining in the parties throughout the 16 care and nursing homes. Many staff remarked how wonderful it was to see how the old war tunes and songs from ‘back in the day’ were enjoyed by the residents – how lovely it was to see those residents really embracing the event. Many remembered all the words of the songs from

memory and there was a general feeling of togetherness, love and joy as the residents celebrated, singing, dancing, laughing and smiling together. “I had a wonderful time at Redannick,” says Ann Nicholas from Central Office. “The staff were really welcoming and made a real effort – they even rolled out the red carpet for us – and it was lovely to see our residents having so much fun.” These beautiful, touching and joyful moments are why the staff at Cornwall Care love what they do; for them, it is all about making people feel happy and loved. Whether in Central Office, the community or care homes, staff at Cornwall Care always focus on the individuals they care for – they are the heart of all they do.

This month, Amanda looks at summer beauty tips, with help from surfer Emma Adams…

I

that make up is no longer necessary as you will look so beautiful and glowing! “For extra soft beach skin once a week, I apply body softening oil to an organic muslin cloth and whilst I shower, gently wash my whole body with it in circular motions. I then lightly rinse in the shower and pat dry. This has a lovely exfoliating and moisturising effect leaving skin soft and glowing ready to bare on the beach. “When I surf a lot, my hair can get dry and brittle so to help protect it I apply a little of the Spiezia Daily Moisturising Balm just to the very ends of my hair and leave it in whilst surfing or overnight if it is extra dry. “The great thing with organic balms is that they are both natural and versatile. My husband even uses calendula balm on wetsuit rub and it is great for any little irritations and rashes for children too. “Summer is my favourite time of year for so many reasons; especially the lovely feeling of healthy, happy, sun-kissed skin.”

contacted the very lovely Emma Adams, model, surfer, entrepreneur and mum, for her beauty advice on keeping healthy and soft skin and hair over the summer months. Here are Emma’s top tips. “The most important part of my beauty regime in the summer and at any time of year is to protect my skin with the best moisturiser possible. I have used Spiezia Organics range for over 13 years and I would not use anything else as I have very sensitive skin. “I recommend using a moisturising balm on your face every day and night. Choosing organic means you know you are doing the very best thing you can do for the beauty of your skin and the planet too. “Before moisturising, I apply a cleansing balm over my face, leaving to soak in for a couple of minutes and then gently wash off using a warm, damp organic muslin face cloth which removes any dirt or salt water left after a day at the beach. My face is then a blank canvas ready to soak in moisturiser. “Wearing oil-based moisturiser takes a bit of getting used to if you are not used to it but the results are amazing. I have learned to give myself the time in the morning to allow the moisturiser to fully soak in before applying any make up. That way there is no excess oil on the face and this will help make up last for longer… although you may feel

Health

Health matters

Duchy Hospital helps to relieve the stress of Hysterectomy with private consultation and appointments convenient to you.

A

hysterectomy can be a very stressful operation to undergo. Apart from being a physically daunting procedure itself, the emotional aspects can understandably be just as frightening. Duchy Hospital offers gynaecology on a private basis with consultant-led care to help you choose the right operation for you, and provide you with the advice and support you need to make a successful recovery. As well as being able to choose your consultant, opting for a private consultation at Duchy Hospital means shorter waiting times and, wherever possible, an operation will be scheduled at a time that is convenient to you. This can be an important consideration when you need to factor in vital recovery time. Around 70,000 women undergo hysterectomies each year in the UK. They are performed to treat a variety of conditions including heavy periods, longterm pelvic pain, fibroids and cancer of the ovaries, uterus, cervix or fallopian tubes. While hysterectomies are generally effective, the operation has in the past required a hospital stay of up to five days and up to two to three months off work. However, more recently, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery has resulted in less

invasive surgery and faster recovery times. Laparoscopic hysterectomy is where the womb is removed through several small cuts in the abdomen rather than one large cut either at the top of the vagina or to the lower abdomen. There are various types of hysterectomy. The type you have depends on why you need the operation and how much of your womb and surrounding reproductive system (ovaries and cervix) can safely be left in place. Further advantages to keyhole surgery are a reduction in disruption to the bladder and bowel and, because the patient is up and about the next day, there is less likelihood of blood clots forming in the veins. For those who have had the procedure, there can be major benefits that lead to a significant improvement in quality of life. The Cornwall Food & Farming Pavilion This is one of the most popular exhibits on the whole showground. And it’s not really a big surprise. Once you step inside the three huge canvas pavilions, you will be overwhelmed by sixty amazing Cornish food and drink producers. Only delicacies lovingly made in Cornwall are allowed in, so you are guaranteed a mouth-watering array of fantastic produce. Many shows have food halls but none that we know of can put together such a display of sumptuous food and drink from a single county. It is a real celebration of the ever-growing produce industry right here in Cornwall. Don’t miss your chance to try and buy some of the best food around. Plus there’s also chance to rest your legs and enjoy a refreshing cup of tea and a slice of cake; it’d be rude not to!

The CORMAC Countryside Area

ì ABOVE Prize livestock on show ê BELOW One of the many live perfornances

It’s a show all of its own, with the lake as its main feature. There’s a daily programme of interesting demonstrations that take place in, on and around this calm oasis. The Cornish Cowboy, Dan Wilson, presents his practical horsemanship demonstration. Dan works with horses daily and will show you how he deals with a myriad of vices with almost instant results. The Sheep Show is entertaining and will teach you all about these creatures. Ferret racing, bird of prey flying and the Dog & Duck Show are among the numerous displays not to be missed.

Music and dance Two official music stages – Kelly’s of Bodmin and the Western Morning News – complemented by the BBC Introducing stage within the BBC Radio Cornwall Theatre – offer a real variety of musical acts on each of the show days. So much music, it’s a festival in itself! The Cornwall Festival of Dance, found on the flower show lawn, is where you can enjoy dance performances covering styles from belly dancing to modern dance – and everything in between. Morris dancers take to the showground avenues on the Saturday.

The Main Ring Headline entertainment acts, hot competition and agricultural tradition are enjoyed in equal measure by the show-goers who flock to enjoy all that the main ring has to offer. This year the equine stars and stunt riders from the BBC’s Poldark series will perform an all-action horseback show. Katy Cropper, the first female winner of One Man & His Dog, will show off her unbelievable sheep dog handling skills in tandem with her 13 year-old daughter Henrietta. The RAF Falcons drop in again on all three days. Plus you can expect show jumping classes and inter hunt-relay heats and final to set pulses racing. The grand parade of prizewinning horses and livestock are always a real spectacle.

The Flower Show A well-deserved reputation as one of the country’s best, the flower show is well worth a visit. Venture inside the cavernous marquee and you’ll be amazed by the numerous floral exhibits that will greet you. The trade section exudes quality, colour and style. There’s also the demonstration theatre with a programme packed with great themes and valuable advice on various aspects of horticulture. All the exhibitors will be pleased to talk about their own area of expertise and of course, more than happy to sell you some of their wonderful plants to take home.

The Steam Fair The bustling traditional steam fair takes you back a few generations; soak up the nostalgia, sounds and smell of the era! Enjoy the rides and fairground pleasures of yesteryear – fun for all ages. But there are also impressive static displays with rare machines from workhorse steam engines to vintage tractors and implements. A full, varied and fun day is guaranteed, but if you’ve got an extra day or two to spare, you can enjoy everything that’s on offer at a slightly more relaxed pace. Cornwall’s finest Championing the fantastic local producers who have put Cornwall firmly on the foodie map.

W

e all know Cornwall is famed for its stunning coastline, thriving art scene and beautiful harbour villages. But it’s also rightly being celebrated more and more as a fantastic foodie destination with fabulous produce. The Duchy is dotted with independent farms, artisan producers, and craft breweries creating award-winning food and drink that’s in high demand, both nationally and further afield. From a thriving fishing industry to dairy delicacies, we really do have it all! One success story is strawberry specialists, Boddington’s Berries. The farm near Mevagissey draws on the south coast’s mild climate and fertile soil to produce its berries. Now in its third generation since opening as a market garden in the 1940s, the family have added delicious, quality preserves with a high fruit content to their fantastic range of products. Supplying fresh strawberries and conserve to wholesalers, caterers and retailers, you’re bound to come across Boddington’s popular strawberry conserve at hotels, restaurants, shops, garden centres and holiday parks. It’s the perfect ingredient for the ultimate Cornish cream tea. Another heart-warming tale is that of the Cornish Gouda Company, the brainchild of Giel Spierings, the youngest son from a small family dairy farm. Due to poor milk prices, he returned home from school one day to

find a ‘for sale’ sign on the farm gate, and so decided to produce cheese in hope of saving his parents’ farm. Out of adversity came triumph, utilising the whole farm to produce the delicious cheese, from the pedigree animals – all born and reared on the farm, right down to the feed, made using the best crops to produce the best cheese. Ranging from four months old to over two years, Cornish Gouda is everything from smooth and creamy to a strong, rich flavour with crystals that melts in your mouth. Nothing beats a proper Cornish cider to accompany a fine cheese, except perhaps a large glass of red wine. Either way, we recommend a visit to Polgoon, a family-run vineyard, dedicated to producing awardwinning artisan Cornish ciders, wines and juices on its farm in Penzance. Visit the onsite shop and deli to discover a range of local produce as well as Polgoon products. You can also visit Polgoon for a vineyard tour and tasting, giving a fascinating insight into the activities of a working vineyard and orchard. Open seven days a week, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, Sunday 10.30am to 4pm. Even better, you can order Polgoon products online, where you’ll find a range of gifts and hampers. But this is just a small selection of some of the incredible produce coming out of Cornwall right now. So head to the Royal Cornwall Show to discover more.

D

ental implants have long been the treatment of choice to replace single or multiple missing teeth. For patients who are unhappy with loose or ill-fitting dentures, dental implants can be a life-changer. Dental implants are a long lasting and excellent treatment for replacing missing or damaged teeth that cannot be restored, and for securing removable dentures. Implants themselves are small titanium cylinders, which replace the root of the natural tooth so a crown, fixed bridge or even a denture can be secured. When a crown is placed over the implant, it looks and functions like a natural tooth, blending in seamlessly with existing teeth. Implants can be used to replace single or multiple missing teeth very simply, and it is not always necessary to have an implant per tooth. For those who are unhappy with loose or ill-fitting dentures, implants are used to fit press-stud attachments to the denture, which secures dentures very firmly in place allowing patients to eat the foods they love again and laugh and smile with confidence.

If you wish to do away with dentures all together, implants can be used to provide a full set of fixed teeth. It really is possible to throw away your dentures for good. Pure Dental Health is a bespoke practice specifically designed and equipped to carry out advanced dentistry treatments. The highly trained team has over 35 years’ worth of dental implant experience, having placed over 6,500 dental implants, so you can relax in the knowledge that you are in safe hands. Pure Dental Health can help you with a wide range of treatments to solve your teeth problems. All done in a relaxing environment, and more affordable than you may think. If you are interested in learning more, the practice offers free treatment advisor appointments as well as regular group presentations on the advantages of dental implants.

Got to go to... Crantock Bay

C

rantock Bay in the hamlet of West Pentire is a beautiful stretch of coastline. In fact, it was voted Britain’s Best Beach in 2014 by The Sunday Times Travel. The bay is enriched by Crantock Bay Apartments, an incredible selection of 5-star, luxury properties, all with stunning sea views of the beach and coastline beyond. Stop for a coffee or lunch at C-Bay, the stylish café, bar and bistro. Whatever the weather and whatever your mood, you won’t be short of things to do. Go for a swim in the indoor heated pool, relax in the spa bath and make use of the all-weather tennis court. Dogs are also welcome at C-Bay and some of the apartments too. So with the South West Coast Path running through the grounds and the beach a two-minute walk away, it’s the perfect retreat for the whole family.

Wheal Busy, Nr. Truro

£279,950

This idyllic country cottage is beautifully presented and extremely spacious making it ideal for families or those seeking the perfect rural retreat! Without a doubt the hub of the home is the large open plan kitchen/day room with its oil fired Esse range and plenty of space for a farmhouse table and chairs. Double French doors open onto the sun terrace and garden beyond and there is a range of worksurface, cupboards and dresser style units. Practical matters are taken care of in the “back” kitchen, just off the kitchen/day room where you will find a double sink and space/plumbing for the dishwasher and washing machine - the beauty of this is that all the “noisy” domestic equipment is on hand yet not in the day room, leaving you to enjoy the tranquil outlook! The living room is full of character with open beam ceilings, a cosy woodburner and a window overlooking the garden. Heading upstairs, the master bedroom has an en-suite shower room and there are two further bedrooms and a family bathroom with a modern suite. Outside, the property is approached over a lane serving Adams Row, just off Wheal Busy, and there is plenty of parking and turning space. The gardens are wonderful, enclosed and extensive with a sun terrace and lawned area beyond. For those with hobbies, the art/ceramic studio will appeal greatly and it has an electric supply suitable for a kiln. EPC rating F.

Fundraising & sponsorship

Juliette, Manager of MFL, took part in the London Marathon this year, raising a fabulous £1400 for the foundation. Congratulations Juliette! Why not have a go at fundraising yourself?

Workshop

Join the Made for Life team on 21st June, 10am to 12.30pm for the Bees Nutrition talk at the Health and Wellbing Centre. See the website for details, or contact MFL Manager Juliette. www.madeforlife.org

ne of the great benefits of Made for Life Foundation is the rich variety of workshops organised for those facing cancer. Whether for mind or body, all provide some much needed positivity, and the chance to interact with others in a similar situation, in what is often a challenging time. Julie Hession’s recent workshop proved a great success (www. mindfulwellbeingcornwall.co.uk). Mindfulness is both a formal meditation practice and an approach to day-to-day living, training our minds to live more in the present, to reduce stress and appreciate life more. The next workshop looks to be equally interesting. Bees Nutrition was founded by Becci Gowers who is in the final stages of becoming a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist. She already has a diploma in Sports Nutrition, and knowledge from dance and fitness qualifications. Now focusing on nutrition for wellbeing and vitality, Becci is passionate about people being the best of themselves. She also runs Dance Confidence Cornwall, offering dance and fitness classes to all ages and abilities focusing on

improving confidence and having fun. Becci will provide Made for Life with a fun, interactive workshop about why nutrition is important and what good nutrition is. She will focus specifically on nutrients to support immune function and reduce inflammation. Becci’s aim is for people to leave feeling inspired and uplifted, taking away useful tools to make positive decisions regarding nutrition. She will also provide some tasty treats to illustrate the fact that nutritious food doesn’t have to be dull or boring. For more information on Bees Nutrition check out the website www.beesnutrition. com, Facebook and Instagram. If you have any enquiries regarding workshops or other nutritional services Bees Nutrition has to offer please contact Becci on 07854 329849 or via email gowers.becci@gmail.com
