Boho Belle in the spring sunshine
here’s something about stepping away from the sturdy arches of our homesteads and venturing forth to lay our heads down under the stars that brings with it a wonderful sense of adventurous nostalgia. As the chill of winter evenings starts to give way to the everincreasing stretches of spring sunshine, we begin to remember the pastimes that brought us so much joy in warmer days. While there are those who still hold true to the traditional boy scout practice of canvas tents and roll-up sleeping bags hoisted onto their backs to find a place in the wild to set a triangular silhouette against the warm glow of a campfire, we’ve come a long way since those early, intrepid days. Today, more people than ever are able to enjoy the benefits of the camping world, with a multitude of options to suit anyone looking for a taste of adventure. But how did this popular pastime first take root? During the 1800s, a craze for ‘pleasure boating’ had developed in Victorian London, whereby groups of people would row on boats along the River Thames during fine weather. When the evenings drew in, they took to mooring their boats to set up canvas
tents along the banks of the river so that they could camp nearby and be ready to get back onto the river in the morning. Whilst the people of London camped on the river bank, a travelling tailor named Thomas Hiram Holding was taking camping to the next level. Having travelled across America with his parents during his youth, he’d developed a great love for the outdoors, and as a result took a cycling and camping tour across Ireland in the early 20th century. After documenting his experiences in his book Cycle and Camp in Connemara, and founding the first official camping club, ‘The Association of Cycle Campers’, camping had become a way to escape into the wilds of nature. After the First World War ended, the National Camping Club was formed by Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouts. From this point camping flourished and turned into the leisurely family activity that we are familiar with today, remaining a popular British practice ever since. Cornwall, with its ruggedly wild landscape and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has made for an idyllic camping destination for many since the beginning, and whether you’re looking to immerse yourself into nature with a bit of ‘wild camping’, find a family friendly spot for some treasured quality time together, or you prefer the comforts of a romantic luxury glamping retreat, there’s an abundance of choice throughout the Duchy.

Henry's Campsite
With the South West Coast Path marking the limits of the land around the county, visitors from all over find themselves drawn to hike the trail with a permanent view, and campsites dotted along the way make for the ultimate places to rest your weary feet before packing up and carrying on the very next day. With an understanding of the archaic need to reconnect with nature that many of us feel, there are a number of campsites spread along our Cornish coastline, ready and waiting to welcome hardy travellers to pitch up in a secure spot and lay their heads for the night. One such sanctuary is Henry’s Campsite (henryscampsite.co.uk), renowned for the spectacular sunsets, breathtaking sea view and its isolated location away from busy roads. The most southerly campsite in Britain, and just a ten-minute walk to the coast path, this small, family run campsite is situated at the top of Caerthillian Valley, and has easy access to some of the most mesmerising beaches in the area: Pentreath, Polpeor, Housel Bay, and even the enchanting Kynance Cove. If you’re one for wild exploration on the very edge of Cornwall, you may find yourself perched around the communal fire pit, sharing your day’s adventures with fellow explorers. Camping is no longer the sole territory of the adventurous wanderer, and provides an endless number of families with a funfilled, cost effective escape from day-to day-life. From stretches of turf that fade
into a sandy beach, to bustling pitches with access to electricity and children’s play areas, Cornwall is brimming with family friendly campsites, ready made for lasting memories. For instance, the National Trust’s Teneriffe Campsite draws families from all over during the warmer months to its site on the dramatic Lizard peninsula, pulling in with cars loaded and kids in the back, ready to jump out and pitch the tent together before exploring the site and planning a fun-filled day ahead. The toilets, showers, baby changing area and washing up point make for an extra comfort and convenience, meaning family life can continue while you have a shared adventure! Glamping, a slightly more recent phenomenon, suits those of us who are seeking a wild experience with a touch of luxury. This usually involves a sturdier structure than the light-weight tents we have become accustomed to today, and is often attached to a feeling of romance and freedom, making for an enchanting escape for couples looking to get away from it all and retreat into the heart of Cornwall while benefitting from touches of warm luxury. Laced with a charming sense of wild tranquillity, Trenoon Meadow Glamping seems a world all its own, carved amongst the floaty meadow grasses and flourishing habitat of the surrounding wildlife. With four bell tents and two ‘pods’, each carefully arranged with inviting beds and cosy amenities, this is certainly a couple's retreat for those in search of a private escape complete with starry nights and sunset skies.

Bordering between the worlds of camping and cosy cottages is the enchanting conception of the shepherd’s hut, a beautiful structure that makes for a comfortable home from home and can be found throughout Cornwall as a popular retreat from the outside world. Famed for his love of the county, Rick Stein’s recent addition to The Cornish Arms in Charlestown, Padstow, are five stunning shepherd’s huts. Nestled by the sheltered woodlands on the grassy grounds of the pub, the wooden huts offer a peaceful countryside calm within reach of Cornwall’s burgeoning food scene, beaches and coastal walks, and make for an idyllic weekend getaway for those of us who may not have the stamina for sleeping night after night on Cornish soil. From intrepid explorations with our shelters on our backs to the most relaxed of moments in a peaceful structure that still allows for a gentle immersion into the wilds of Cornwall, our treasured county holds the key for campers and glampers of every sort. With a world of natural beauty all around, there is adventure ahead no matter the shelter over our heads while the stars are shining.

Set in 34 acres of glorious Cornish countryside, there is plenty on offer with a hot tub barn, a dazzling pavilion on the hill and serene private woodland to name a few. Add to this a pamper room, gym, heated dog wash and dog exercise area and you know you’re onto something special. he Isles of Scilly are just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall and are officially recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are five inhabited islands and over a hundred smaller ones. One of the islands, St. Agnes, is the most southerly point in Britain and all of the islands are gently warmed in the currents of the Gulf Stream. In fact, the Isles of Scilly are the first place that spring arrives in the UK. The islands are fringed with sandy beaches; white sands with hardly a footprint on them and dazzlingly blue seas. Turn inland and you’ll find each one criss-crossed with miles of trails and paths. Depending on the island you find yourself on you can explore the footpaths by bike or horse. You might take a guided nature walk or just ramble on your own, taking a gentle stroll from beach to artisan café to enjoy slow cooked, local food. You might just watch grey seals playing in the crystal clear ocean. Every single moment is one for you to delight in. Just over one hundred years ago, the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company established a regular ferry link between the islands and

Penzance on the mainland. In the beginning most of the traffic was made up of islanders on business or early flowers and vegetables being transported to the mainland. By the seventies, the Isles of Scilly had become a significant holiday destination; Harold Wilson, the Prime Minister, had a summer home here. People from Cornwall and Devon went every year on their annual holiday. Holidaymakers would book the same week or two for the following year even as they left the islands to return home. If you go back to visit the Scillies once, so they say, you will return every year. Today, the islands are just as beautiful as they ever were. In fact, their wild and unspoilt beauty is now even rarer and so even more appreciated. That said, the Isles of Scilly haven't been completely untouched by the passage of time and now, the islands can offer almost everything that a holiday maker could wish for, but in their own rugged and special way, surrounded by stunning natural beauty. The inter-island boats will take you from one island to another, but that journey is much more exciting than any normal taxi or bus ride. Island hopping becomes a pleasure in itself with the captain and crew pointing out birds and wildlife as well as some of the historic sites. If you wish to cross the water under your own steam, paddle boarding and kayaking have become popular and can be hired from a number of places. Pull on a wetsuit and you can slip under the water and dive with the seals, a truly memorable and heart warming experience.
If all that activity and fresh air has given you an appetite or a thirst, the islands have a number of restaurants and artisan cafés where you can enjoy the freshest possible seafood and slow cooked, locally sourced delights. You might choose to visit the local vineyard or treat yourself to a gin school experience where you will develop your own gin recipe. Whether you visit for the day or stay a little longer, you will never forget your time on the Isles of Scilly. The island life becomes a part of you and you become a part of the islands' story. However you choose to travel to the islands, by Skybus from Land’s End, Newquay or Exeter airport; or sail on the Scillionian from Penzance, the journey will surely be as memorable as the destination.

ornwall is home to an array of beautiful places to stay, but you will not find a more unique property than The Bodmin Jail Hotel. This boutique hotel is nestled in Bodmin, not far from the famous Moor, and was built by Napoleonic prisoners in 1779 and used as a prison until 1927, when it was decommissioned. The jail then fell into disrepair, until it was bought by its current owner who could see the wonderful potential of the space, which has been sensitively restored and many of the original features retained. Three prison cells have been knocked together and are now stylish bedrooms, with original doors and bars on the windows. The original prison layout was ideal for achieving an industrial chic look with four floors of steel exoskeleton and a metal landing underneath a glazed roof that brings in lots of natural light. Guests checking into The Bodmin Jail Hotel can now expect a hotel that retains and enhances a unique atmosphere and sense of history. If fine dining makes your holiday, then The Chapel Restaurant delivers on that front. This fabulous restaurant offers a seasonal à la carte menu and the daily changing table d'hôte. Carefully curated from locally sourced ingredients, Head Chef
Dane Watkins (formerly of The Headland Hotel) creates a superb dining experience with dishes such as seared scallops, pan friend turbot and Ruby Red beef fillet. Every morning the team will serve you a hearty Cornish breakfast to prepare you for your day. The Bodmin Jail Hotel is to be found in the heart of Cornwall, and with both coasts accessible in 20 minutes it is an ideal base for both a coastal and country adventure. You can head north and experience the wild waves of Polzeath, a mecca for surfers, or go to the south coast for sheltered coves, which are perfect for paddle boarding and sailing. Active guests can hire bikes to cycle the 18-mile trail to Padstow or head up to Bodmin Moor, one of the most dramatic places to explore in Cornwall. The on-site Bodmin Jail Attraction is another must-do and has an immersive ‘Dark Walk’ experience, which shows colourful characters from Cornwall’s past, who were inmates in the former jail. After exploring the sites around Cornwall, you might wish to head to the hotel’s Champagne Bar for bubbles or afternoon tea, the perfect setting for a spot of relaxation.

ating back to 1903, The Atlantic Hotel has been reimagined as Polzeath Beach House, the ultimate, coastal boutique retreat. Offering rooms and sea-view apartments, the first thing that hits you on arrival is the ‘toes-in-the-water’ position, which rivals the finest of coastal hotel locations. It is simply breathtaking, right on the beach, facing the Atlantic and in prime position for those incredible north coast sunsets. The recent redevelopment has seen a complete makeover of the 12 luxury hotel bedrooms as well as the 9 stunning apartments, with floor to ceiling glazing looking out on to the beach and sea beyond. On arrival, nothing is too much trouble; the reception area may be uber-cool but the welcome is warm. Hotel bedrooms are havens of calm – they may not have sea views but their appeal goes far beyond what is outside the window. The vibe in these rooms is chic-coastal; crisp white linen and white walls provide a blank canvas with accent headboards. Pops of colour, the sink-into
Hypnos beds cocoon body and soul ensuring optimal sleep, while the sweet smell of Sea Kelp toiletries combines with the sea breeze for the ultimate in olfactory indulgence. magine a beautiful blue ocean, waves gently breaking on one end of a golden sandy beach and building to sweeping rollers at the other. It’s a bright spring morning and you’re faced with a dilemma – to swim, to surf or to paddleboard? The choices seem endless. Whichever direction you decide to go they’ll all be better than the inertia that has marked our lives during the recent Covid lockdowns. The benefits of cold-water immersion have been demonstrated to help with mental and physical health – improved sleep, mindfulness, confidence, the reduction of stress response, blood circulation and rheumatism. However, unless you’re a superhero, you’ll need the correct attire or kit to get the full benefits from any of these activities. Be it a simple pair of swimming shorts and rash vest, through to the most advanced fibreglass surfboard and everything else in-between. This is where MAD Water Sports can help. The team here know their foils from their foamies, and it would be odd if they didn’t, having been surfing and swimming off the north Cornwall coast for the past 20 years, along with running a successful outdoor activity centre. Ironically it was the onset of the pandemic that galvanised them into creating a retail outlet. They had to act quickly as they saw the take-up of their instructor-led courses drop off a cliff as new rules came into place. So, in 2020 a new business began trading, tentatively at first but as we emerged from the pandemic, the pace is picking up. At their completely refurbished unit just outside Wadebridge you enter a spacious area replete with a new mezzanine level; decked
out with a wide range of sustainable top-quality surfboards, paddleboards, bodyboards and a full range of paddles. There are also hydrofoils, wings, and foil boards, along with windsurfers, available to view and purchase in the shop. On the lower floor there are heaps of useful accessories, including quality wetsuits from several world-renowned manufacturers, change robes and dry bags. Very consciously they have managed to create a unique shopping experience, where the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. Help and grounded advice is always on hand but not to the point where you will feel pressured. Besides selling an extensive range of products they are also aware of the provenance of these items. They strive to ensure that they are sourced and supplied from companies who are keen to reduce plastic in their packaging, develop articles manufactured to ensure a long lifespan and, by monitoring all processes, reduce their carbon footprint. So, whether you just want to hit the sea for the occasional swim or to take it to the next level, we suggest you head to MAD Water Sports to tap into a wealth of knowledge and ensure you purchase the correct kit for your waterborne adventure. You won’t be disappointed.

Safeguarding OUR SEAS
A lifechanging competition launched early this year, to bring the crucial message of marine conservation to the heart of secondary schools nationwide.
D
ABOVE ì On the road to becoming ocean influencers RIGHT è Education through experience BELOW î Entering the breathtaking marine environment
ive Project Cornwall believe it is every young person’s right to experience the ocean. They also believe that educating our children about the wonders of the planet’s marine environment and the crucial part it plays in our existence has never been more important. How else are we to safeguard the future of our seas? Having kicked off in January this year, Dive Project Cornwall has now ‘gone live’ on its ambitious project to educate hundreds of thousands of young people, by delivering an education programme directly into schools across the UK, in partnership with the Marine Conservation Society. The mission is simple: to raise awareness of the importance of the Earth’s marine environment, and the vital role it plays in our very own existence. At the heart of the project is a nationwide competition open to all secondary schools, for 400 lucky teenagers to win the experience of a lifetime: a six-day, life-changing trip to Cornwall, where they will learn to scuba dive, enjoy outdoor adventures, take up beach-related activities, and attend presentations from leading marine industry experts. A truly immersive experience, the winning teens will be taken from classroom to shoreline and beyond; from the on-site training pool, to taking their first steps to discovering the wonders of life beneath the waves, igniting their imaginations along the way and sparking a desire to join the ocean conservation movement. Many of these children will never have had the opportunity to experience the ocean close at hand. They’ll leave this residential course, delivered in the breathtaking environment of Porthkerris, on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, as PADI qualified Open Water Divers, ready to spread the word as ocean influencers.

INSIGHTS In the first of a series of gastronomic insights, we welcome Cornwall Living’s foodie Guest Editor and Cornish culinary star, Jude Kereama. é ì ABOVE Jude Kereama, owner of Porthleven restaurants, Kota and Kota Kai
W
ith the intention of remaining for just two years before returning to his home in New Zealand, Jude Kereama quickly found his feet here in the UK. Eventually, after a time spent opening restaurants for a group in London, he moved to Cornwall with his wife Jane, where they established Kota, the first of two restaurants in Porthleven. The second, Kota Kai, came a few years later. Commanding an enviable position on Porthleven’s harbour head, Kai complements the fine-dining experience of Kota with a family friendly atmosphere. Its eclectic menu fuses the vibrant, playful flavours of south-east Asia with Cornwall’s abundance of home-grown meat, seafood and produce. “It is like God’s own larder,” says Jude, “from the number-one butchers in the UK and the freshest seafood and fish, to the top vegetables and herb farms and other artisan producers.” This respect for Cornwall's natural pantry has been fundamental to Jude’s success. In fact, Kota is one of only a handful of restaurants in Cornwall to have been awarded three AA Rosettes, but it’s not all about the food: “It has been lovely to introduce our resident artist, Maxine Greer, and to have our own range of pottery made by The Toll House Pottery Ceramics. It makes
the whole experience more immersive,” explains Jude, “celebrating Cornwall not just for its food, but its creative identity, too.” Cornwall has to be one of the UK’s premier foodie destinations and Porthleven is at the forefront. But it isn’t only Jude’s presence here that has cemented his association with Cornish cuisine; he has also appeared no fewer than four times on the BBC’s Great British Menu. “I was always a huge fan of GBM. When I was asked to compete, it gave me a sense of belonging as one of the best restaurants in the south west of England. There is a mountain of pressure for you to get things right as the whole country tunes in to watch. But it is a double-edged sword. It can be great for you if you do well, but equally as bad if you make mistakes. Luckily for me I have done okay.” As an example of what has put Jude’s restaurants on the UK’s culinary map, he shares with us one of his favourite, signature recipes: Seafood Laksa...

A TRUE
SPIRIT
Cornish Rock Gin’s ever-growing collection of carefully crafted gins and rums offer a true taste of Cornwall.
A
stroll across Rock beach with their four-legged companion was where Angie and George had the vision for Cornish Rock Gin. Their idea was having a small distillery, but little did they know that from the outset there would be a huge demand for this Cornish spirit. Made from the most natural products, many of which are found here in the Duchy, and Cornish spring water, the gins are all sugar free and maintain a classic dry taste with subtle flavours and undertones. The Rock Distillery set out to produce a gin that was clean and pure and now make eight fabulous gins all made with the freshest and best botanicals possible. After much research a new bottle has been designed to make the presentation of the gin even more of an event. The bottles even match the exotic Rock Gin glasses which are the ideal way to enjoy a Rock Gin perfect serve. For the rums, the sugar cane base comes from the Caribbean, but many of the other ingredients are sourced as close to the Duchy as possible. The base is re-distilled in Cornwall with the addition of some exciting flavours. There are now eight fantastic Cornish Rums, again made from the purest ingredients, all with a smooth taste and some really amazing
flavours such as fresh coconut, vanilla, mango and passion fruit, English cherries and even Cornish saffron. Angie and George are passionate about their products and love to spread the word, with tempting taster shots. “We try to get out there to as many people as possible. So, as well as being an online retailer, we attend many markets and events so that people can come and taste our products at their leisure. Here in Cornwall, you will find us at Bude Market every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. We are in Tintagel (next to the Old Post Office) every Tuesday and Saturday. You can find us at Falmouth Market on the Moor every Saturday,” explains Angie. “We also have a small retail and tasting space in Port Isaac, plus we are at Port Isaac market every first Sunday of the month. If you can’t get to any of those locations then we also have a small retail shop and tasting station down in the Allen Valley just off the A39.”

Whether you have a home in Cornwall that you use yourself or you offer to others, there’s a way you can support a much-loved local charity.
E
ver wondered how you can give back to the Cornish community that offers you such a warm a welcome when you visit? Well, next time you’re updating your holiday home think of donating your preloved items to Cornwall Hospice Care. The charity cares for and supports terminally ill adults and their families during the most difficult of times at its two hospices – St Julia’s in Hayle and Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell – and through its community service projects. One of the ways the charity raises funds is by selling on donated furniture through its network of charity shops across the county. Donating that sun-faded sofa or last season’s rug will help fund vital end-of-life and bereavement services for the community of Cornwall. You’ll also be helping to protect the area by finding new homes for the dining table that your family has outgrown or the lamp that doesn’t match the new theme, rather than sending them to landfill. The charity offers a free collection service that you can book online. Donations just need to be in a good enough condition to sell on and have any required fire safety labels. Without these the charity can’t legally sell them and would have to pay to dispose of the items.
So, next time you’re taking in the beauty of the rugged Cornish coastline, exploring the county’s rich history or eating fresh scones (jam first of course!), just remember what you can do to support the local community that calls Cornwall home. Cornwall Hospice Care has furniture shops in Penryn, Truro, St Austell and Wadebridge and will come and collect the donated items from your holiday home. Just pop online and book your collection in advance. They are also great places to browse if you are looking for a quirky gift or to upcycle any furniture for your own use.
