Developed by researchers at Purdue University, the new liquid-free composite is made from a slurry of graphene, zinc oxide, and the polymer polyvinylidene difluoride.

“It [graphene] has superior thermal conductivity, high strength and provides ultralow friction,” said Vilas Pol, an associate professor of chemical engineering at Purdue University.

Researchers tested stainless-steel surfaces coated with the new lubricant. “We tested it under worst-case scenarios,” said mechanical engineering graduate student Abdullah A. Alazemi. Findings were detailed in a research paper published on July 11 in Carbon.

The nanosize zinc-oxide particles allow the lubricant to stick to the metal surface, and the polymer binds the whole mixture together, said chemical engineering graduate student Arthur Dysart.

Solid lubricants are needed for numerous applications such as air compressors, equipment used in the food industry, space vehicles, gear-and-chain mechanisms, fasteners found in high-temperature environments, and missile systems.

“The fundamental causes of mechanical failure are friction and wear, so reducing these factors improves the performance and lifetime of many mechanical

The researchers found that the composite lubricant sets up a film that significantly improves friction and wear reduction. Raman spectroscopic analysis of wear scars revealed this persistent protective film on contact surfaces. The research is ongoing, and future work is planned with industrial partners. The researchers applied for a patent through the Purdue Research Foundation’s Office of Technology Commercialisation.

ImprovIng asset avaIlabIlIty to reduce coal handlIng costs Coal is an important global resource and likely to remain so for many years to come. It is a crucial element in the energy mix and vital in the manufacture of a great many other products.

But now more than ever, the pressure is on to reduce transportation costs by improving the efficiency of coal handling operations.

C

oal represents a significant proportion of all dry bulk, and handling and transportation of this challenging material is a major consideration.

It is particularly important to make sure that handling equipment is reliable in the long term because breakdowns can lead to considerable downtime, reductions in efficiency and unforeseen costs.

Coal conveyors are heavy-duty electromechanical systems that start and stop under heavy load. Unsurprisingly, they are prone to ingress from harsh coal dust and related debris, and their working conditions can be far from ideal as well with dramatic swings in temperature plus driving rain, sleet and snow, ice build-up etc.

In an industry where downtime due to mechanical failure is often viewed as an unavoidable fact of life, British company Sensor Technology of Banbury is developing technologies that can help operators to boost long-term reliability, increase availability, and reduce unscheduled maintenance. This can be vital for the coal handling sector as it looks to drive down costs, boost uptime and optimise efficiency.

Sensor Technology’s offering to the coal handling and transportation industry is built around its non-contact digital torque monitoring technology. Applied to the control systems for conveyors, it can transform these processes into accurately monitored and optimally managed systems.

Accurate monitoring of torque is a key indicator of impending mechanical problems. The data can also be used to ensure conveyors are being run at optimum speeds, and that mechanical shocks are being minimised. This is because torque data is directly related to the power from the drive shaft. As coal is added and the conveyor load increases, so more power is needed. Similarly, if the

conveyor is run at a higher speed, more power is needed. Controlling conveyor speed accurately helps to minimise shock loads, and so leads to both increased reliability and increased efficiency.

Traditionally torque data has been hard to collect, with wired technologies v u l n e ra b l e t o t h e c h a l l e n g i n g environmental conditions inherent in coal handling operations, while also being expensive and difficult to set up. Wireless technology presents an important alternative that is being recognised as a real enabler for monitoring torque in even the most demanding applications.

With over 20 years of research and development into digital torque monitoring, Sensor Technology is at the forefront of this technology and is an acknowledged leader in the manufacture of wireless load sensors.

It has a global network of distributors assisting sales, and a network of worldrenowned technical experts assisting in the development of technology.

The company’s TorqSense transducer is based on the patented technology of measuring the resonant frequency change of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. TorqSense torque sensors use two tiny SAW devices or SAWs made of ceramic piezoelectric material containing frequency resonating combs. These are glued onto the drive shaft at 90 degrees to one another. As the torque increases the combs expand or contract proportionally to the torque being applied. In effect the combs act similarly to strain gauges but measure changes in resonant frequency.

The adjacent RF (radio frequency) device transmits radio waves towards the SAWs, which are then reflected back and picked up by the device. The change in frequency of the reflected waves identifies the current torque. This arrangement means there is no need to supply power to the SAWs, so the sensor is non-contact and wireless.

This innovative method of measuring torque can bring distinct advantages to coal conveying, whether in extracting coal from the mine, or transporting it for processing, or as part of subsequent shipping operations. A process that was once regarded as very difficult to monitor can now reap the same benefits as many other industrial processes.

TorqSense technology can also improve on the torque limiters that are traditionally relied on to prevent mechanical damage in the event of a coal conveyor jam. Continually monitoring the torque, the transducer can identify the gradual increases that are indicative of an impending jam condition, so enabling preventive maintenance. This key technology can deliver significantly reduced downtime that might have been caused by blockages or breakages to conveyor chain, paddle attachments or the drive gearbox.

TorqSense has seen widespread adoption in torque monitoring applications across a host of industries, where it is recognised as providing a reliable, accurate and easy-toimplement monitoring solution.

Increasingly, these applications are including conveyors, where operators are finding that accurate, non-contact, digital torque monitoring technology has an important role to play in optimising operations and reducing costs.

Sensor Technology can point to a number of applications within coal handling and transportation as well, from the conveyors at the coal face to the bulk unloading conveyors at docksides.

MNB PrecisioN eNgiNeeriNg MD's forwarD thiNkiNg leaDs to toP iNDustry awarD. Forward thinking by the managing director of a Midlands-based high end precision engineering company has led to him being given a prominent industry award for inspiring leadership.

MNB Precision Engineering’s MD Luke Benton has been recognised by The Manufacturer’s annual TM 100 2016 report for its significant success in implementing servitization strategies.

The company was an early adopter of servitization.

The award acknowledges his role as an ambassador of the benefits to the wider manufacturing community.

MNB Precision worked with Aston University’s Centre of Research and Practice to develop a way of bringing all its operations under one roof. This included a number of previously outsourced services.

For MNB customers this meant a 78 per cent reduction in lead times with an average cost saving of 10 per cent. The strategy also included developing training opportunities for it staff.

Finnish cleantech company Altum Technologies has created a Power Ultrasound system that cleans fouling from industrial equipment with no production stoppages and no equipment disassembly.

released to the market last June 7th, 2017. The Altum Series consists of 6 products for specific equipment type: pipes, heat exchangers, tanks, cooling towers, filters and reactors.

The technology is the first and only of its kind, a game changer for industries that need continuous cleaning of pipes, heat exchangers, tanks and other type of liquid carrying industrial systems.

With the cost of removing fouling in heat exchangers totalling 30 billion euros in Europe alone, the potential applications for the technology are significant. Altum is backed by seed investment from Lifeline Ventures and by Tekes , the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation.

Altum was founded in 2016 after many companies were asking for a fouling cleaning solution that allowed them to continue production without stopping to do maintenance.

There wasn’t anything in the market to fulfil this, so the Finnish company in partnership with the University of Helsinki stepped in to solve the problem.

Previously, there were methods to clean fouling such as pressure washing, chemicals, soda blasting, even with ultrasound baths but all of them require stops, are inefficient and dangerous to the environment. On top of that, stopping production is extremely expensive.

Atlas Copco introduces new compact, low maintenance F range refrigerant dryers Atlas Copco has introduced its new F range of professional refrigerant dryers that combine reliable, energy-efficient performance and a low maintenance requirement. This range has been designed with a simple space-saving vertical concept for easy plug-and-play installation. The new F range of refrigerant dryers has been developed for compressor applications where air quality is less critical, therefore requiring a lower initial investment than for more advanced dryer solutions. The simple, vertical design provides ready access for servicing and contributes to lower maintenance costs. The compact 0.21 m2 footprint allows for easy installation into an existing air system, with the dryers suitable for a wide variety of dry air applications; such as pneumatic tools and controls, painting, packaging and injection moulding, together with vehicle maintenance including tyre inflation.

In addition, thanks to their stable pressure dewpoint, as low as 7°C/45°F, the dryers are ideally suited for applications requiring ISO 8573 Class 5 air qualit.

The F range dryers remove residual moisture from compressed air by cooling it down close to freezing point, condensing the water, which is then automatically drained.

The dry air is warmed before leaving the unit via an airto-air heat exchanger with an integrated water separator thus ensuring a constant flow of air without moisture content to prevent corrosion damage to pipework, tools and equipment, increasing their lifetime while minimising the risk of costly leaks in compressed air pipework.

The full range comprises twelve models in total: seven, the F5, F10, F15, F20, F30, F40, F50 and F60, have a maximum working pressure of 16 bar and an air treatment capacity ranging from 5 to 60 l/s respectively. The other five models are the F70, F90, F110 and F130, with a working pressure of 13 bar and throughputs from 70 to 130 l/s.

The F5 up to F50 units operate with R134a refrigerant, while the remainder of the range utilises R404A refrigerant.

A major component of the F-range dryers is the hot gas bypass valve, which safeguards capacity and maintains constant pressure in the evaporator to prevent freezing, even in extreme production environments. Other important features include the timer drain that ensures complete removal of the condensate, and the refrigerant filter that is designed to protect the capillary tube from dirt particle blockage and contamination.

The F-range fits well within the existing portfolio of refrigerant dryers. This added new range contributes to the comprehensive offering of compressed air dryers by Atlas Copco Compressors.

Big Ben bongs to be silenced as engineering works reach critical stage will drive the clock hands until the Great Clock is reinstated The Great Clock, considered by many to be one of the finest and most innovative mechanical clocks ever to be built, is operated by a custom-built Victorian mechanism that relies on gravity to trigger the renowned bongs.

At midday on Monday 21st August, Big Ben’s famous bongs will sound for the last time for four years, as a major conservation project on Westminster’s iconic tower reaches a critical stage.

As part of the complex series of works, the tower’s Great Clock will be dismantled piece by piece with each cog examined and restored.

The four dials will be carefully cleaned, the glass repaired, the cast iron framework renewed, and the hands will be removed and refurbished. A modern electric motor

To stop the bells the striking hammers will be locked and the bell disconnected from the clock mechanism, allowing the Great Clock to continue telling the time silently.

Parliament’s specialist clock makers will ensure that Big Ben can still bong for important national events such as New Year’s Eve and Remembrance Sunday. The bells will resume their regular time keeping duties in the course of 2021.

The Great Bell, popularly called Big Ben, weighs 13.7 tonnes and strikes every hour to the note of E. It is

accompanied by four quarter bells, which chime every 15 minutes Cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1858, Big Ben weighs 13.7 tonnes and is one of the largest bells in the UK. The current Big Ben is actually the second Bell manufactured for the tower. An earlier bell, cast in 1856, was irreparably damaged thanks to the original striking hammer being too heavy. The bongs last fell silent for maintenance in 2007, and prior to that between 1983-5 as part of a previous large-scale refurbishment programme.

Commenting on the current works, Steve Jaggs, Keeper of the Great Clock, said: “This essential programme of works will safeguard the clock on a long term basis, as well as protecting and preserving its home – the Elizabeth Tower.”
