Setting a New Standard Inductive proximity sensors re-invented The launch of cabled versions of their latest range of inductive proximity sensors marks the culmination of a project started only a few years ago. Water and oil-resistant, able to withstand shock and vibration, resistant to quick temperature changes and tolerant of different mounting conditions were some of the design aims of the new NT range of inductive sensors. Not only that, but they had to be more cost-effective than existing types, too. In short, leading sensor manufacturer ifm electronic set themselves the goal of establishing a new standard on the market for universal industrial sensors with an outstanding range of functions in terms of working environment, ingress resistance, and switching precision. The NT range, as it is known, features more reliable target detection than ever thanks to a 50% reduction of tolerances, independent of mounting considerations. This means it makes much less difference what type of metal the sensor is installed in. There is also a reduced amount of individual deviation from one sensor to another. ifm electronic knows that the operating environment of an inductive sensor can adversely affect the sensor performance, so they have taken steps to ensure that the effects temperature drift and permeation are greatly reduced. The new range will operate over an extended temperature range of -40 to 85 °C, and a new sealing concept means that the sensors will operate reliably in wet conditions. The new sealing concept covers the demands of IP65, IP66, IP67, IP68, IP68 coolant (where commercially-available coolants are used for the test instead of water) and IP69K. Designed for the general market, the offering covers standard connections, so there are DC PNP and NPN versions with the common M12, M18 and M30 threads, available with normally open or normally closed switching function, in flush-mountable and nonflush-mountable variants. The new versions feature a 2m PUR cable and a rear-mounted bright LED visible from all around even under difficult lighting conditions. These complement the M12 connector versions launched earlier. 4 - Automation Update November 2014
Over the whole NT range two housing lengths are available, with either a 60mm body, or a 45mm (50mm for M30). Details are not overlooked either: the NT range are clearly labelled with a laser-etched order number, making identification simple well into the future. The NT series developments just launched form the basis of new sensor development for ifm electronic, with many more examples set to follow. Last but not least, the goal of lower prices was achieved into the bargain. ifm is committed to working closely with its customers to develop products which precisely match their needs, and the company provides expert, readily accessible technical support to help users maximise the benefits they gain from ifm products. CAD solutions for the UK automotive industry Automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers are under unrelenting pressure to design innovative and alluring vehicles—and bring them to market faster than the competition. To find and manufacture a single automotive product that exudes quality, is pleasing to the eye, and appeals to buyers, hundreds of conceptual design details must be vetted. Automotive designers must then shepherd the winning concept through design review, evaluate it for manufacturability, and plan for production— all to ensure a beautiful, quality vehicle. Manufacturers, meanwhile, are in an endless race to introduce the newest design trends to market as quickly as possible, while avoiding costly design changes. This creates both time and quality pressures in the automotive product development cycle. What if automotive design software had the tools needed to visualise a vehicle from conceptual design through to engineering and production? High-end photorealistic visualisations and virtual prototyping enable better design decisions up front and help speed the best concepts through the product development process.
In the automotive design and development process, communication gaps often arise between product development and management, and between design and engineering teams. Even in the earliest stages, designers must communicate and present design intentions to management for approval. But management needs visual aids to understand what the actual vehicle will look like, and to help inform their decision making. An innovative and powerful software solution for high-end 3D visualisation, Autodesk® VRED™ solutions evolved from the field of photography and now include interactive design exploration and presentation as well as virtual prototyping. VRED enables the automotive industry to create high-quality visualizations for use from conceptual design to design review to engineering. You can make better decisions based on realistic parameters and share one virtual prototype model throughout the automotive design workflow process. With its advanced visualisation and analysis tools, Autodesk helps you take advantage of today’s global trends and prepare for tomorrow’s demands.

Automation Equipment With Plenty of Get Up and Go When it comes to handling, moving and lifting bulky products, automation technology today can certainly pack some punch. Previously deemed too weighty, fragile and cumbersome to move between production lines, let alone sites, packing machinery is now designed with portability in mind giving manufacturers more versatility than ever before. Offering huge advantages over stationary systems, Pacepacker Services has seen a dramatic rise in the demand for bespoke and transportable bagging, pick and place and palletising solutions over the last 18 months. Contrary to popular belief, automation equipment doesn’t need to have a fixed abode. The ability to transport machinery across a factory floor, a field or even a county enables customers, who may have previously ruled out automation due to cost concerns or inflexibility, to boost production in their plants, often with a 12 to 18 month ROI. Belmont Farms is a great example. Handling up to 1000 tonnes of potatoes each year, Pacepacker created a ‘plug-and-play’ robotic palletising and conveyor system. Measuring 5 x 4-metres and weighing 2500kg, we installed it within a customised moveable frame that is now easily transportable via a fork lift on a trailer around the 13-mile long family-run farm. This flexibility facilitates expansion opportunities and is especially beneficial for manufacturers which have numerous packing operations across multiple or single sites. Full line automation is often perceived as expensive – particularly if you are packing numerous products of varying consistency. Space limitations can also be a barrier that hinders a move to automation. This is something Pacepacker addressed for horse feed manufacturer F H Nash Ltd. Rather than doubling up on the number of systems, they minimised the automation outlay by creating a single bespoke system that toggles between two production lines to handle both dry and wet product. Taking into account a limited footprint, we mounted a C21 Multi-Pile Sack Placer and a Total Bag Control (TBC) bagging system onto sliding rails. Because it was only the 10 - Automation Update November 2014
TBC moving between lines, Nash was able to use two separate weighing systems to keep the different product consistencies apart - completely eliminating the risk of contamination. The TBC’s flexibility meant that as the system was moved, product recipes could be called up instantly and downtime eliminated and no matter which position the bagging system was in it fed filled sacks to the same robotic palletiser. Working as a FANUC strategic partner, Pacepacker offer ‘new generation’ robots, including the M410-iC/185 palletiser. It is the strongest, fastest and the most compact palletiser in its class. Ideal for restricted areas where headspace is at a premium, the new generation system has been designed with 20% less parts, making it lighter and more portable. Featuring a 185kg payload and average speed of 1700 cycles per hour, it is versatile enough for palletising bags of sugar or shifting slabs of concrete, making it especially popular with agricultural, food, bulk solids and aggregate manufacturers. Of course, the ability to withstand harsh environments is equally important. Earsham Gravel tasked Pacepacker with creating a portable yet heavy-duty turnkey line, incorporating weighing, bagging and robot palletising technology that could be moved between quarries. The entire line was built into two interconnecting containers measuring 40 x 8 x 8ft. As well as meeting space constraints, the kit was designed to withstand the abrasive and wet quarry environment. Virtually doubling the daily bagging capacity to 140 tonnes, it takes just 30 minutes to load the kit onto a lorry and transport to a new location. For more information visit www.pacepacker.com

The PPMA Show 2014 makes its triumphant return to the NEC The PPMA Show 2014 reaffirmed its status as the UK’s premier freeto-attend complete production line event for processing and packaging machinery earlier this month, as 8,190 visitors took to the NEC for its 27th show. Joining over 320 exhibitors, visitors arrived to discover the latest product launches, technological developments as well as insights from industry leaders such as Coca-Cola Enterprises, M&S, Tesco as well as the newly appointed Groceries Code Adjudicator. Run over three days (30th September – 2nd October) the show once again benefited from the community atmosphere associated with the UK’s manufacturing industries, with exhibitors quick to praise the business and networking opportunities available at this year’s exhibition. Speaking about this year’s exhibition, Alison Davies, Commercial Manager for PFM Packaging Machinery, said: “We’ve been extremely busy at this year’s show and it has been a great opportunity to secure new business. The PPMA Show is a great place to showcase PFM’s new innovations and to catch up with existing customers. For us, it has been a very fulfilling and worthwhile three days and we’re looking forward to exhibiting at next year’s show.”
Showcasing a hotbed of innovation With a hotbed of innovation on display, visitors to the PPMA show were able to view the latest machinery from the world’s leading packaging and processing machinery manufacturers. For example, Festo, leading suppliers of pneumatic and electronic automation technology, revealed its latest concepts inspired by nature, including the new WaveHandler. The WaveHandler is a modular system that moves a surface in such a way that objects are transported and sorted purposefully. The conveyor consists of numerous bellows modules that deform the surface creating a wave motion that transports the object with in a targeted manner. The WaveHandling system behaves in a similar way: while each individual bellow advances and retracts in the same
spot, a wave moves over the surface of the conveyor. A number of exhibitors also launched their latest product lines at the show, including Holmach’s new whip tool, AeroQbo, as well as its refining tools, Bilia for the universal processing system, Qbo. The OAL Group’s Steam Infusion technology was also on show highlighting the revolutionary heating and mixing process that infuses steam into liquid food products in a vacuum. It was also awarded the accolade of most innovative processing machinery award at the PPMA Group Industry Awards.
The 2014 One to Watch The PPMA Show also boasted a seminar programme with insights from such industry leaders including Coca-Cola Enterprises, Groceries Code Adjudicator Christine Tacon, M&S, Tesco and Wykes Farm. Taking to the stage on the first day, Christine Tacon, Groceries Code Adjudicator, led a combative talk on the UK’s leading supermarkets and took the opportunity to encourage manufacturers to share examples of supermarkets abusing their code of practice. Speaking at the show, Christine commented: “I don’t want to interfere in your commercial relationships with retailers but if you know of a practice that is not only affecting you but is also likely to affect others - isn’t that a justification to tell me so that I can take action. Give me the tools and I can do the job.” Peter Hopper, Production Manager for Wyke Farms added: ““It’s very important for us to be present at the PPMA Show as we’re a family company who are keen to see the latest
cutting edge technology that may well help us in our aim is to be one of the best in the industry. Events such as the PPMA Show are very important for the wider UK manufacturing scene and are often underutilised. If you manufacture you need to visit the PPMA Show to see what’s out there.” For more information on the PPMA Show 2015, please visit www.ppmashow.co.uk or join the conversation on twitter (@ PPMAshow) or the PPMA Show LinkedIn group. Hedelius provides sophisticated solutions for efficient machining The Hedelius range of high precision machining centres is now available from exclusive UK and Eire agent, YMT Technologies. Renowned throughout Europe for precision and reliability in every industrial engineering sector, each Hedelius CNC machine tool is produced in-house at the company’s 12,000 m2 state-of-the-art facility in Meppen, Northwest Germany. All Hedelius machining centres embody one basic principle; they are completely orientated towards the requirements of the customer. The semi-gantry design, with heavy-duty overhead roller guides on the Y-axis, is the perfect design for vertical machining. The short overhang and the solid machine bed guarantee perfect milling results. The fixed grey cast iron table is suitable for precise clamping of large and heavy workpieces. The chips fall from the machine table directly into the chip conveyor located below. Each Hedelius machining centres designed to meet the operator’s requirements, with easy workpiece loading and unloading as well as the ease of setting up and controlling the machine. Every detail is geared towards the efficient production of small batches or one-off components. With a large X-axis traversing range loading and unloading of workpieces in parallel to machining cycle, in pendulum operation, means optimum use of the machine’s capacity. This method increases the machine’s output level, so that cost-effective medium to large batch production is also possible. Fluid cooled state-of-the-art direct drives are used for the rotary and swivel axes of the 5-axis machining centres of the RS 505, RS 605 and RS 805 (RotaSwing) Kombi range. These torque motors work without mechanical transmission elements and are virtually wear-free. All the machining centres of the RotaSwing range stand out due to their unique combination of fixed machine table and rotary/tilt table unit. They are designed for 6-sided complete machining. It is possible to produce even the most complex, cubic components on the rotary/tilt table units with no more than two set-ups. The machines from the Tiltenta T7 range are true allrounders, coping with all the tasks encountered during machining. The generous workspace with an infinitely pivoting main spindle enables 3- or 4-sided face machining of long workpieces, while precise 5-sided machining in pendulum operation is possible with the integrated NC indexing table and a workspace divider plate. Its design opens up new applications in the processing of single items and series. Whether end machining of long 12 - Automation Update November 2014
work pieces or 5-sided complete machining with integrated NC rotary table — the T7 crossover concept solves many processing tasks in mechanical engineering, tool making and vehicle production. The combination of an infinitely adjustable main spindle and a long machine table with integrated NC rotary table allows the mixed production of large workpieces and precise 5-axis machining in one machine. As the smallest in the range the T7 1600 features a compact footprint and is perfect for single-part and small batch production of machinery and tool making. The large machine table allows 5-axis machining of workpieces with a swing diameter up to 1100 mm and a maximum of 1200 kg clamped weight, the machining of workpieces up to 1600 mm long is also possible. Control options include the leading industry NC systems, such as the Heidenhain iTNC530 and Siemens 840D. A recent development from Hedelius to support extended machining operations and ‘lights out’ production is the Skyloader range of pallet systems, which are fitted to the RS range of Kombi machines. These systems offer a capacity range of up to 41 pallets, with additional tool storage of up to 190 tools, keeping set-up times to a minimum. “Like YMT Technologies, Hedelius is a family-owned and run company, with more than 40 years’ experience in the design and build of machining centres standing behind the brand. In partnership with YMT Technologies, these advanced innovative machining centres will now be within reach of precision engineering and manufacturing companies in UK and Eire. Benefiting from YMT Technologies complete sales and support network customers really do get more than just a machining centre when they invest in any Hedelius machining centre,” concludes Howard Mancey.
Breakthrough Motor Cures Reliability Challenges For Synseal A company producing extruded PVC-U profiles for double glazing product applications is using ABB’s synchronous reluctance (SynRM) motor to cut the number of motor failures on two of its main extruders. The SynRM replaced ageing servo motors, ensuring high reliability and maximum production time for the company from its extruders. Synseal Extrusions Ltd, based in Nottinghamshire, is one of the UK’s largest PVC-U extrusion companies, producing system solutions for windows, doors, conservatory roofs and orangeries. Its Line 20 and Line 21 used servo motors that were becoming increasingly unproductive. Steve Scurrell, Works Manager for Synseal, says: “The existing extruder motors were 20 years old and largely obsolete. Although we kept refurbishing them, they were lasting for shorter and shorter times between refurbishments. We knew that if we did not replace them, either could fail at any time and we would lose the use of an extruder line completely. Although we may not lose a huge number of hours, even a minor loss of production time could have a negative effect on our business productivity and this is something we would want to avoid wherever possible.” At this time, ABB was looking for a suitable constant torque application to test its new SynRM motor. Phil Nightingale, of ABB authorised value provider Inverter Drive Systems (IDS), says: “This was a standard constant torque extruder application, which was ideal to test the capabilities of the SynRM. The servo motors were long and thin. Although they could have been replaced by normal squirrel cage motors, the SynRM motors were a better fit for the existing installation as they offer more power for their size than conventional motors.”
frame sizes smaller than a conventional induction motor, an important benefit for machine builders who often work with stringent space restrictions or for refurbishing existing machines. It offers the high power density of an equivalent permanent magnet motor with the robustness of an asynchronous squirrel-cage motor. Because the rotor runs cooler than other technologies, the bearings also run much cooler, making the motor much more reliable. The two 25 kW motor, together with matched ABB ACS880 drive, was installed on the extruder. IDS installed the drive, while Synseal installed the SynRM motor itself. This installation included a force vent kit, foot mount and HTL encoder. As well as curing the reliability and obsolescence problems, the SynRM motor also cut 20 percent off the running costs of the extruder, saving £754 a year on electricity. Adds Scurrell: “The motor and drive are now fitted as a permanent installation and we have another machine to convert to this configuration later in the year. The main benefit to us is that we now have much better availability of spare motors off the shelf and know that we can keep our extruders running.”
Says Scurrell: “We have done a lot of work with IDS over the last five years and have always received great support from them. If they were confident with the proposed solution, then we were happy to go ahead.”

This is the key to the high esteem Omega enjoys among its customers and its reputation for consistent, top quality products.
Eco OAC KTR have extended its range of highperformance coolers by adding an energy-efficient series for 24 volt drives. The highlight of the recently developed eco coolers is a continuously variable speed control which adapts the demand for cooling power improving energy efficiently. At the heart of the new eco series is a specifically developed control unit. It measures the oil inlet temperature by means of a sensor and uses real time data to control the variable speed motor and achieve a more efficient cooling process. The benefits of the continuously variable speed control are an optimized energy consumption which contributes significantly to savings in the life cycle costs of the machine. In addition, it reduces the noise emission many times over, particularly at lower speeds. Subject to the specific usage demands on the motor and fan, the service life of the overall system is
