By summer we’re making puddings so they can mature deliciously for Christmas day. And all year we’re coming up with ways to make a festive visit to one of our six Café Tea Rooms as lovely as it can be. We hope that whether you’re meeting friends or family for a seasonal celebration, taking your pick of the festive treats atop a Lady Betty Afternoon Tea cake stand, or bringing the children to see our Christmas windows, this year’s visit to Bettys continues – or starts – a great Christmas tradition.

The centrepiece for this year’s window is a brightly coloured Christmas train, laden with gifts. The wagon features the date that the first Bettys opened, 1919, a reminder that next year Bettys celebrates its centenary. Trains play an important role in our history. Our founder, Frederick Belmont, completed his journey from his native Switzerland to Yorkshire by train, and almost didn’t make it to the county at all. Newly arrived in England and unable to speak the

language he asked for a train to ‘Bratwurst’. A helpful local put him on the train to Bradford. This year we’re celebrating this story the only way we know how – with a delightful hand-crafted train and carriage framed by snowy Alpine peaks. Made from the finest Grand Cru milk chocolate, it honours Frederick’s talent as a chocolatier – as well as his chosen mode of travel. Chuff along to Bettys to buy one, or order online.

Nearly 100 years may have passed, but we like to think that things haven’t changed that much.
