The new Biocity science incubator facility will be located close to the existing incubator building on Pennyfoot Street, which currently houses more than 70 science start-up companies. It will support up to 200 new specialist jobs and is supported by £6.5M of Local Growth Fund money which aims to expand bioscience facilities within Nottingham. At 50,000sq ft the building will provide move on space for expanding businesses in the a key sector for growth in Nottingham under the Local Growth Deal with Local Enterprise Partnership D2N2. The building will feature a number of biology and chemistry laboratories in varying sizes and ancillary commercial spaces for both start-ups and existing SMEs within the sector. The planning permission approval came as contractor Willmott Dixon were appointed to the delivery of the building. Nick Heath, operations director at Willmott Dixon in the East Midlands, said: “This is a really exciting project for Nottingham as it looks to grow the bioscience industry within the city and we are thrilled to have been selected as the main contractor.”

Many of the homes are on estates in the urban centres of High Wycombe, Princes Risborough and Marlow, but rural locations and rely on electric heating or solid fuel. Red Kite installed 32 of the market-leading Ecodan heat pump systems just over a year ago in homes that have previously been using solid fuel, and the organisation is now looking at extending this programme to tackle their remaining James Brownbill, Project Manager for Red Kite said: and we chose to go with Ecodan based on the predicted savings and the comprehensive support available from the manufacturer. We’ve now analysed the results of using these over the past year and have been delighted”. When Red Kite was set up, the organisation made a number of promises to its tenants and one of them was to look at the renewable side of energy within properties, to help tackle the rising costs of fuel. “Energy bills were very high for tenants particularly those for us as a landlord because if tenants aren’t able to fully heat their homes, it can cause maintenance issues with condensation and damp.” “When heating needs upgrading, many other housing associations just change like for like, but because we are

Red Kite enlisted the help of Ecodan manufacturer Mitsubishi Electric, to work with local communities to see what system would suit them best and help educate tenants on the best “We looked at other manufacturers but were impressed by the passion of Mitsubishi Electric, especially the support they new technology”. Modern air source heat pumps have been on the market for over six years now but are still new to many people. They they heat radiators to lower temperatures than gas or oil, yet free, renewable heat from the outdoor air.

Yeoman Shield Goes Back to School Yeoman Shield Provides Protective Wall Panels to Sutton Academy Yeoman Shield returned to Sutton Academy, a busy school in St Helens, Merseyside which caters for 1300 children aged 11 to 18 years, to install a further phase of wall protection.

Not only do the wall panels protect from costly and unsightly damage but they add colour, warmth and a design interest to what would otherwise be a sterile, cold looking area.

Works had been carried out previously by Yeoman Shield over a year ago which proved to be so successful in protecting the walls in corridors around the school that they were awarded further work.

Yeoman Shield HessianEx 2.5mm thick wall protection panels in a Yeoman Shield directly employed plaster walls that were wide open to damage and marking caused by heavy footfall throughout the plaza.

“Having the walls protected with Yeoman Shield will amount of time and money that we spend in the future on redecoration costs to the maintenance budget” concluded Ian Morris. Sutton Academy will be carrying out a full refurbishment of the dining hall during the Summer break for which they will be appointing Yeoman Shield again to supply & install the wall protection panels.

The basins were inset in to the vanity tops and the glass strips were used again as an accent for the edges. In keeping with the natural theme of the stone, dark wooden frames with recessed lighting were placed around the basin and mirror area providing a visual break within the room. The treatment of the shower area depended on the layout of

Dart Valley Systems Ltd has been working closely with Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, Capital Engineering Manager; Paul Humphreys to improve infection control measures. An initial trial set was set up at North Devon District Hospital using the AquariTherm™ Manual tap. As the AquariTherm range was designed with healthcare environments in mind, it was a great match. One of the taps main selling point, was the patented isolation feature, which allows the tap to be removed for servicing or exchange without the need to isolate the water or remove any panels. This unique feature reduces any down time during servicing or disinfection,

Part of an ongoing £5m investment in the redevelopment of Huntingdon Town Centre, the 400-space car park, located opposite a supermarket, is a dynamic timber-clad, slabs, high ceilings, and few cross beams. The duplex pair of 21- person, stretcher passenger lifts are wall mounted within concrete lift shafts in a dedicated scenic glass structure. Traction-driven, the lifts operate at a speed of 1.0m/s between four Located opposite the stairs, each 21-person passenger lift complements the light, spacious design aesthetic whilst addressing the demanding environment: Double height stainless steel bump rails; Exteriors, full-depth architraves and call textured, linen stainless steel; Suspended downlighter ceilings, car extractor fan, hand rails, rear-wall halfheight mirrors; Two opposite facing car operating panels with Braille pushes

Italian Fashion Stairs Italian Fashion Stairs: quality, professionalism and innovation in the Italian stair’s craftsmanship I have recently had the opportunity of visiting the fabulous world of the stairs. A context perhaps unexplored and isolated in the interior design, and maybe partly underestimated, as they buy or rent a house, the stairs are already there, done for bringing us up or down. Italian Fashion Stairs, with its experience in the sector, has guided me to the discovery of a new consciousness where the staircases are no longer a static and immutable object of home furnishing in our own residence, but a quality product, which we can personalize according to our necessities, and that can style, such as classic, country, essential, or contemporary. The professionalism of Italian Fashion Stairs, and its big range of products, have inspired me to the materials it employs for they have made me understand the importance of the concept of quality, which has to stay inevitably between the one of stair and the one of security. The precision and the attention through which the producers

This is a spiral stair basically created with a steel girder, glass treads, steel handrail, stainless steel circular bars, and a central pole in steel. This model is certainly the optimization of restrained spaces, without renouncing to the modern design and the

elegance, suggested in particular by the central helicoidal structure, harmoniously climbing up by accompanying the trads, and by the simple, functional and modern stair balustrade. The competence and the quality products and services satisfying their customers, can be easily perceived in every step of their producing processes, and everybody can prove it by simply observing their stairs, the care and the customers satisfaction. Italian Fashion Stairs has teached me that the Made in Italy is not only a synonym of aesthetic taste, but also quality, innovation and customer care. Alumasc waterproofing and green roof success at new Glasgow development.

A mixed-use development in Glasgow has been successfully completed using Alumasc’s as well as a green roof solution from the company. 185-221 Buchanan Street is a new £70m development comprising 11,400m2 of retail space and 49 residential units. SIKA LIQUID PLASTICS Sika Liquid Plastics introduces ‘the next generation of liquid applied roof membranes’

Sika Liquid Plastics has launched what it calls the next generation of liquid applied roof membranes. Decothane Ultra is a low odour that achieves more than 80% minutes after application, and greater than 95% reduction after just one hour against a similar one-component competitor. According to Sika Liquid Plastics, these results were established by independent testing. Decothane Ultra utilises a range of new curing agents developed and patented by Sika. The company versatile platform from which to formulate extremely low solvent content and low odour liquid applied membranes for a wide range of applications. Field tests were undertaken on the product prior to launch and a large number of these applications were in odour sensitive areas such as food manufacturing plants, hospitals and schools. They were all successfully applied without disruption to activities within the buildings. Nigel Blacklock, head of technical at Sika, said: “Over the past decade, concern about construction product emissions

48

from those involved in their supply and installation. European regulation now imposes strict controls on Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) contents, together with a growing focus on ensuring relating chemicals are non-hazardous in their use. development challenge for us but we were keen to achieve a successful outcome without compromising other aspects of the product. In particular, there are problems that occur with low solvent and solvent free products which often handle poorly, exhibiting high viscosity at lower temperatures and sagging on vertical applications at elevated temperatures. Additionally, they do not permit the use of glass that can be more time-consuming to install. Our goal with Decothane Ultra was to tick all the boxes and make no compromises.” During the development of Decothane Ultra, Sika Liquid Plastics worked closely with a consultancy specialising in the testing of occupational health exposures to develop a test method intended to replicate the ‘worst case scenarios’ on roofs

using a closed test area without ventilation. A cross-section of single component polyurethane liquid membrane products were tested under these conditions and all were found to breach workplace exposure limits, while Decothane Ultra was found not to breach any. Nigel Blacklock added: “We see this as the new benchmark for liquid applied roof membranes.” Sika Liquid Plastics quality assured contractors have been trialling the product prior to launch. Martin Eyre from Surface Protection said: “Surface Protection has worked with Sika Liquid Plastics for many years and so we were more than happy to take part in trialing Decothane Ultra, testing it in sensitive areas, such as hospitals where we’ve now used Decothane Ultra in more than 15,000m² on various hospital roofs.” The company says it was also able to use the new solution at a highly sensitive nuclear site. Daniel Devlin of Designed Roof Systems added: “I would happily recommend Decothane Ultra, as it’s an excellent product, applying it is even easier and the odour is hard to detect.” www.decothaneultra.co.uk

Timber January 2015

British Hardwood Resurgence It’s widely understood that wood is one of the most sustainable building materials available. As a nation we have become overly reliant on imported hardwoods to the detriment of not only the UK hardwood industry, but also our own native woodlands. There is a long held belief amongst architects and designers that the UK timber industry is both limited in its capability and expensive. But as Tom Barnes of Vastern Timber explains, this is not the case. Specifying British Regardless of the size of the project – from the humble kitchen chair to the largest timber constructed building, wood delivers sustainability on almost all fronts and the very process of growing trees, forests and woodlands epitomises the core of sustainability. As well as absorbing 800kg of carbon per cubed metre of timber, trees and woodlands fauna and have an important role harvested it is a simple and natural process to plant another tree to replace it. The cycle of sustainability continues in the most natural way possible. The processing chain for timber is basic timber into a wood product requires little in the way of energy, but often much in the way of skill, care and dedication. And once a can last many years, even centuries. But is that enough to allow us to tick the sustainability box? Why have we become so reliant on imported hardwood over domestically grown hardwood and how does this work against the idea of sustainability? A big part of the reason for our reliance on imported wood is that the level of demand can’t possibly be met by the UK timber industry alone.

56

In reality the UK would have trouble satisfying perhaps a quarter of the demand for hardwood. According 43% of all timber products used in the UK in 2013 were British grown. But that includes softwoods, for which we certainly have a great deal of capacity. When you look at hardwoods, only 6% of hardwoods used in the UK are native. Unfortunately we have only 13% forest cover in the UK and this Europe. 72% of British woodlands are privately owned and of these 64% are unmanaged with only 22% of private woodland independently industry that does not appear to have the capability to deliver on demand. By using British wood we are protecting, valuing and putting something back into our own woodlands. We are also supporting our domestic industry and put an economic value on all of that, but we all want those woodlands to be there, we all want to reduce our environmental impact, and we all want to protect our own economy, so we should be using what’s on our doorstep and reducing the amount of timber we are importing if we want wood to be a truly sustainable material. This localism aspect of sustainability is what we as a nation should be focussing on. Simply having a mark on timber saying it comes from a sustainable source isn’t good enough when the timber has travelled thousands of miles around the globe. Is it not more sustainable to take timber from a properly managed woodland 50 miles away

where we can see how well the woodland is managed and can be reassured that there are no negative impacts to ecology or communities? The

that the wood you use comes from well-managed woodlands, but that the wood comes from British woodlands and that is an important distinction. By supporting the Grown In Britain movement and specifying British hardwoods, architects and designers have it within their ability to directly help to grow and protect this most important and historic industry, creating and safeguarding jobs and our woodlands and helping both local and national economies. But ultimately, by supporting the UK timber industry they will be helping to close the loop on sustainability. That’s a powerful message and a convincing driver for cultural change.
