Lovell to build £100m Cardiff urban village The £100m urban village scheme is being developed by Tirion, a not-forprofit organisation, initially created through a partnership between the Welsh Government and Principality Building Society. Up to 1,000 jobs will be created during construction at the 53-acre former Arjo Wiggins Paper Mill site, in Canton, to the west of the city centre. Work is just beginning on infrastructure for the scheme with building of homes to start in the Autumn. The first phase of The Mill development will create 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell and 102 homes for Tirion which will be for discounted rent, open market rent and social rent.

An additional 340 homes for Tirion will be built in further phases as well as a neighbourhood centre with shopping and community facilities. David Ward, chief executive of the Tirion Group, said: “This is a ground-breaking project which promises to be a blueprint for similar high-quality communities across the country.

UK-GBC launches building performance research project The UK Green Building Council is launching a new research project examining the way industry currently designs, constructs and operates non-domestic buildings. Examining industry approaches, tools and behaviours, the group will focus on how to maximise building performance, not just in energy terms, but also other aspects of performance that impact both the building user and the wider environment. The research team will work with UK-GBC members to explore what companies are already doing to address the issue of building performance, seek out best practice, and to identify gaps and barriers that need to be overcome across the whole industry. The Delivering Building Performance project is sponsored by BuroHappold, Saint-Gobain and Tarmac Group. Julie Hirigoyen, CEO of the UK-GBC said: “I am delighted that UK-GBC members are supporting this important piece of work. Huge cost, carbon and productivity benefits can be gained through a closer focus on the performance of buildings as we design, construct and operate them. Following the

Mulalley lands £210m Croydon housing deal

Sheffield Uni undulating glass atrium plan approved The dramatic undulating glass roof structure will create an Engineering Heartspace below and connect the Grade II listed Mappin Building with the 1855 Central Wing. The new space for the whole of the Faculty of Engineering has been designed by architect Bond Bryan and marks the third phase of the St George’s Campus redevelopment. A contractor is now set to be appointed for the £10m project in the summer with work expected to start in 2017 with a 2018 completion. Both the Mappin Building and Central Wing will also undergo a complete refurbishment under the plans. In order to facilitate the construction of the glazed atrium a degree of demolition is proposed, including the historic Caretaker’s House. The Heartspace development will provide the University with a total gross internal floor area of around 125,000 sq ft of combined new build, refurbished and reconfigured existing space.

Torun’s auditorium takes centre stage Spanish Architect Fernando Menis has inaugurated his most complex work to date in the historic Polish town of Torun The new auditorium in Torun (Poland), a UNESCO protected historic town, expresses a fusion of old and new through the use of historical and contemporary materials. The interior uses brick, a material present on nearly all the façades of the historic centre. The exterior is created with an almost white concrete. As it is cut and carved away, shades of red appear as the lining in its holes. The building’s use of material is a reinterpretation of the traditional use of brick, establishing a parallel between the tectonics of the city and the location of the plot. The interplay of colours, red and white, emphasizes the dichotomy between the modern and historic architectures and the innovations in technologies used in construction.

The CKK “Jordanki” will become an international symbol of culture and architecture for the city of Torun. Thanks to its unique location and strategic position, it is not just a new building, but a single object, an emblem and reflection of the pride of its society. Commenting on the project Architect Fernando Menis says: “I wanted to make an auditorium that has the best efficiency possible, one that can adapt to different events and various capacities for public, and even to be able to house several independent acts simultaneously. Thus, able to absorb efficiently a varied number of performances, the kind of symphonic music, chamber music, theatre, opera, cinema, musicals… and, at the same time, a place which citizens of Torun can feel proud of.”

The project site is designed to exist as half of the area of the site. This frees up the remaining area for a park. A green arc is created with views onto the theatre as well as make the park appear larger. In order to assure that the project does not block views to the river it was essential to keep the building’s height to a minimum. This was also in keeping with the historic nature of the neighbourhood, as the building blends with the site and exists as a natural object. The concert hall’s outer skin remains rigid while, inside, the building exists as a fluid that brings together the different functions, its many elements different but existing together, slowly combining and playing off each other. Holes and cuts made in the rigid shell allow the red to seep out to the exterior. The program is carefully considered and flexible in nature, the building allows the theatre to create different capacities allowing it to change from performance to performance. Allowing two rooms to act as the main theatre moving the walls changes the number of seats available. It is a building which, thanks to its flexible acoustic system, can be tuned and adapted to each musical program that is being performed. The concert hall may also be opened to the outside, allowing outdoor performances and the use of the park for events. The design is open and permeable, it allows people to pass though it toward the square, providing a complete and continuous connection to the public.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) attempts to standardise the creation and exchange of information to make the design, construction and operational management of a facility or infrastructure asset more efficient. The Ultimate Accolade for the Leadwork Craftsman At the beginning of October, some 57 LCA members, associates and their guests assembled at the Fawsley Hall Hotel, near Daventry for the announcement of the winners of the 2015 Murdoch Award and Murdoch Sponsors Award competitions.

he Awards are presented each year in recognition of the very best in leadwork design and installation, carried out by the specialist members of the Lead Contractors Association - in effect the ultimate accolade for the craft of working with lead.

As part of a pre-dinner reception hosted by Jamestown Metals, guests were able to assess the entries for the 2015 Awards and try to pick the overall winner from the keenly competitive and high quality nominations.

In addressing the gathering at Fawsley Hall, Chairman of the Judging Panel Richard Murdoch once again paid tribute to the very high standard of the entries for the 2015 competition. He noted that this year there had not been any large scale, extravagantly decorated entries which might have stood out and distracted the judges, so all entries were subjected to particularly close scrutiny, down to the very fine details, in order to determine the deserved winners.

The panel of Judges had met some three weeks previously and had eventually selected D Blake & Co (Edinburgh), Lead-Tech Roofing (Worcester Park) and Norman & Underwood (Leicester) as the finalists of the Murdoch Award and N Lee & Sons (Whitney), Leadwise Contracts (Co Antrim) and SWG Roofing (Dunmow, Essex) as finalists of the Murdoch Sponsors

Before announcing the winners, Richard again thanked Associated Lead Mills for continuing their long standing sponsorship of the Murdoch Award, in support of the LCAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quality standard ethic. He noted that once again, all the main Murdoch Award Finalists were being hosted by Associated Lead for the evening as part of their sponsorship.

He also thanked them for their foresight in introducing the Murdoch Sponsors Award in 2006 for projects under five tonnes, which had since given some of the smaller LCA members the chance for wider recognition. Indeed he noted that there were in fact three new members entered for the Sponsors Award and two of them, Leadwise Contracts and SWG Roofing, had made it to the final, although perhaps Leadwise should be regarded as a returning, rather than an entirely new member, having previously been in the LCA from 1998 until 2008. Turning to the actual entries from the Sponsorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Award finalists, Richard noted that guests had previously viewed photographs of the dome with unusual weatherings from N Lee & Son, the tile replacement leadwork at Stormont Castle from Leadwise and the dome and spire from SWG Roofing and he again commended the consistently high standard of

both the design and workmanship that was evident throughout each project. However the judges had to pick a winner and Richard announced that Leadwise Contracts were the winners of the Murdoch Sponsors Award for 2015 and in the absence of Martin Cahalan from Leadwise, Ian Harvey stepped forward to receive the Award on their behalf from Alan Barker of sponsors Associated Lead Mills. Turning to the Murdoch Award itself, Richard noted the presence of two quality leadwork heavyweights who regularly reached the finalists stage, in the form of D Blake & Co (twice previous winners) and Norman & Underwood. Up against them this time was Lead-Tech Roofing who in 2013 had won the Sponsors Award and were now going after the main prize. Again the projects were not eyecatchingly spectacular, with the focus more on precision detailing and consistent setting out, but in all cases completed with fine workmanship.

Whilst the judges had applauded the unusual pitched roofing over a thick stone substrate at Brothwick Castle by D Blake and the work carried out by Norman and Underwood to the flat roof at Staunton Harold Church, in their unanimous view it was the large flat and pitched roofing and cladding project completed by Lead-Tech Roofing at Rygar House in London that deserved to be the winner of the 2015 Murdoch Award.

Paul Mulry, who had worked extensively on Rygar House stepped forward to receive the Award on behalf of Lead-Tech from LCA Chairman Stuart Bailey. Lead-Tech MD Martin Walsh was delighted for Paul to receive such public recognition of his individual craft skills and workmanship and was very proud that his company had continued the quality standards ethos that had enabled them to win the Sponsors Award two years ago. Barry Smith, Managing Director of sponsors Associated Lead Mills, was delighted that this years awards in both categories had featured “new blood” challenging the more established LCA members. “It’s great to see new faces coming through for these awards” he said. “Not only does it show that anyone stands a chance of being a finalist or even winning if their work is good enough, but also that the craft of working with lead is alive and well and in very good hands.”

2015 Murdoch Sponsors award Winner - The Parliament Building, Stormont - Leadwise Contracts, Co Antrim NI In a role reversal of recent trends, lead sheet replaced a failing stepped tile design in a project that relied heavily upon close teamwork between the architect and the traditional crafts Martin Cahalan reports that Leadwise were delighted to be

involved in the project at the Parliament Buildings, Stormont, an iconic Belfast landmark on an elevated site overlooking large swathes of the city and a building that has had, and continues to have today, huge relevance for all the citizens of Northern Ireland. The work itself was to the front sloping pediments and was necessitated by a longstanding failing in the existing stepped tiling arrangement. After discussing the various options, the project team from Hamilton Architects led by Mr Paul Millar took the decision to replace the tiled roofing with lead roofing that would mimic the detailing of the tiled roof as far as possible. It was at this point that Leadwise were able to offer some advice as to the necessary sub-structure, sizing and ventilation needs and these were incorporated into the final design. With the aesthetics now of paramount importance it was essential that the joinery work be of a very high standard and consistent throughout and thankfully this was achieved by the Contractor, Tracey Bros of Enniskillen. With the lead to BSEN:12588 sourced from Jamestown Metals, the 110 sheets of Code 6 lead needed were pre cut, formed and sent to site for installation. A building paper to BS 1521 Class A was laid onto the decking and the wood rolls then put in place as the work progressed. In total there were some 2600 copper nail heads that were individually dotted and everything was checked and rechecked to ensure continuity and it was through this attention to detail and pride in the project that such a pleasing outcome was obtained. Whilst Leadwise are delighted to have their contribution recognised by their peers it’s important to appreciate that it was the contributions of others also that made for overall success. The project Architect, Mr Mark Knight and Tracey Bros can take great credit too for all their input and desire to leave a lasting legacy on this landmark building.

Lead-Tech Roofing Ltd – Rygar House, London

2015 Murdoch Award Winner – Rygar House, London - Lead-Tech Roofing Ltd Consistency of design and workmanship was the key to the aesthetics of this large project involving flat, pitched and vertical panels and again working in partnership with the architect enabled design changes to be made to improve the long term integrity of the roof Martin Walsh reports that this new development is set in the heart of Mayfair in central London. LeadTech were appointed through the Main Contractor 800 Group Ltd to install all the roof timbers and new code 6 lead sheet to the crown flat roof, as well as the 70º Mansard Roof and the vertical sections, which also included code 6 lead to dormers and associated flashings. The total project was some 20

tonnes of lead sheet, supplied by Associated Lead Mills. A key factor in securing the project was that as an LCA member, Lead-Tech could offer the 25 year insurance backed guarantee. Once again the contractor and architect worked in close partnership and during the process of building the roof Lead-Tech were able to identify potential technical issues which might arise with the planned detailing and more importantly how the new lead roof would be ventilated. In most cases the Architects Drawings had been well thought out but when approached by Lead-Tech about their concerns, the architects allowed details to be altered as required. Once the main roof construction had been completed and Lead-Tech commenced installing the new code 6 lead, they decided to reduce the setting out of the wood rolls

to 575mm centres, thus ensuring the lead was installed well within its design limits. The wood rolls were staggered and included a ventilation ridge detail which was achieved using the Nicholson Air Track Products. On the Mansard 70º degree pitched roof slope, Code 6 sheet was again installed at 575mm centres and the length of the bays were also reduced to 2.00 lm overall. At the head 3 rows of staggered fixings were installed using 38mm copper ring shanks. The sizing and fixing of the bays have therefore been set well within its design limits, thus eradicating any future problems and potential failure of fixings, which is particularly significant as access would be problematic and costly. It is this attention to detail that was recognised by the Murdoch Award judges

lack of outlets and failure to maintain the gutter had caused water to leak into the premises of Alligator Self Storage, based in Winchester.

Specified to solve this problem was Ampteam’s Unifold Gutter Lining system, the installation taking place during October 2015 2 runs of Unifold totalling 117 metres were fitted and each run included two stopends, slot weir overflows, and sole outlets with a new weir overflow also being installed centrally with each run to increase the gutter’s discharge capacity. The system had a very favourable response from the installing contractor Gerry Kilcoyne from Milroy Contractors, who, in his own words said “Gutter measured spot on and it fitted like a glove” The project was completed within time scales and to the client’s satisfaction.

Integrated solar approach recognised at roofing awards Forster Roofing has picked up the ‘Solar’ award at the National Federation Roofing Contractor’s (NFRC) annual Scottish Roofing Contractor of the Year Awards, for integrated roofing and solar works at Bellway Homes’, Cowdenbeath development. Forster was recognised by the judges for its pioneering approach to integrating traditional roof tiling with in-roof solar Photovoltaic (PV) installation services at the 49 plot social housing development. The electricity generated by each solar array is being fed directly into tenant’s homes, reducing their requirement to buy in electricity from the grid, thereby empowering them to take greater control of their energy bills. Forster Technical Manager, Alan Collins collected the award at a special luncheon hosted by BBC Scotland News presenter and

reporter, Catriona Shearer at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. The award is Forster’s seventh Scottish Roofing Contractor of the Year Award in six years, with previous award winning projects including the Glasgow Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village, Fife Housing Innovation Showcase and Barratt Homes Evolution development in Aberdeen.

GALVANIZING COMPANY SUPPORTS URBAN REGENERATION PROJECT A galvanizing company has played a role in the regeneration of a new shopping district in South Wales. Worksop Galvanizing, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has partnered with long-standing client, Caunton Engineering, to galvanize over 750 tonnes of steel for the redevelopment of Neath Town Centre. The project, which is being overseen by main contractor, Keir Construction, saw the plant galvanize structural steel including beams and framework to construct a new 600 space multi-storey carpark and a 24,000 sq.ft retail unit, as part of the first phase of redevelopment of the shopping district. Funded by the Regeneration Investment Fund for Wales (RIFW), the project is central to attracting more people to the town, and create a vibrant place to live, work, and socialise.

Steven Waterhouse, Divisional Director at Caunton Engineering, said: “We have worked with Worksop Galvanizing on previous projects, and knew the size of the galvanizing bath at the facility would easily accommodate the 16 metre long span beams which formed the main structure of the carpark. Charcon Delivers a Colossal 4,200 Tonnes of

Hard Landscaping Materials to Swansea University’s £450m Bay Campus

Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has demonstrated its superb product and logistical capabilities by supplying a colossal 4,200 tonnes of hard landscaping materials to Swansea Bay Campus, all within a tight time frame of just six months. The ambitious £450m project by the University of Swansea has doubled the size of its academic and research facilities, establishing Swansea as a dual-campus university destination. Situated at Neath, Port Talbot on the approach into Swansea, the campus has been developed on St Modwen’s 65-acre former BP Transit site, transforming the bay’s industrial landscape into a modern, hi-tech district that rivals the world’s top 21st century universities. Charcon consulted with contractor Vinci Construction at an early stage of the project. The architecture of the university buildings already

present featured both traditional and modern elements. This was a key driver in the choice of paving products and shades to make sure the landscaping would complement these buildings. Charcon therefore recommended its Andover Textured range for the contemporary public spaces and squares. Offering a premium quality block paving product at an affordable price, the Silver Fleck and Silver Grey shades were combined for maximum visual appeal in 300mm x 200mm blocks, with a total of 10,295m² of Andover Textured being specified.

To contrast, 8,280m² of traditional-style Woburn Rumbled cobble paving in Rustic colour was used for the meandering streetscape. Reminiscent of traditional setts, all three sizes were incorporated to create eye-catching designs. The exterior of the great hall was paved with StoneMaster in Medium Grey (600m x 450mm) from Charcon’s Life range, made from a fine stone mix of up to 50% reclaimed or recycled materials, yet resulting in a granite effect without the expense of using natural stone.

Alongside the paving, 2,000m² of Eco Countryside Classic Kerbs and edging was also supplied to help add visual appeal to the functional roadside edging. John Sheehan, project manager at Vinci Construction, comments: “Bay Campus has been an immense project that had to be delivered within an incredibly tight timeframe. By working closely with Charcon from the outset, we have benefitted from their technical abilities, as well as the welcome reassurance of efficient deliveries and products of the highest quality.

“At Vinci, we are immeasurably proud of having delivered phase one so successfully, and we would like to extend our thanks to all involved at Charcon in helping to achieve this.”

Charcon will continue to supply products for the second phase of works which is already underway and scheduled to end in 2020, ready for the University’s centenary.

How to build a low energy building like this one Conker Conservation, developer Camber Consulting, and materials supplier Ecomerchant have all played their part in delivering a genuinely low energy building at a very affordable price.

The design team at Conker worked with the client bringing with them a raft of proven systems and methodology and an inclusive interconnected approach to delivery, in this case study Paul Mallion a Certified Passivhaus Designer at Conker explains how this was all brought together. Conker have been designing low energy buildings since 1999, this is our approach, demonstrated in the photos: Use the free energy available from the sun; passive solar design has been understood for centuries but still new houses are built that make no concession to orientation. BRE guidance from 1971*describes how good orientation can save 10% of the energy consumption in a dwelling, at zero cost. However, don’t forget to consider solar shading and don’t over-glaze, especially on the east and west sides.

Build to the lowest U values possible, aim for at least 0.15W/m2K for all elements, never use building regulation values as a default. Do not rely on manufacturers for your U value calculations, learn to do them yourself, or use our Android app, ‘Wallnuts’. Calculate for thermal bridges such as cavity ties and fixings, and factor in a workmanship value if using ridged insulation boards, as they rarely get fitted really well.

You will need to work with a knowledgeable materials supplier, it is essential to have a secure supply chain this is why we make sure our supply partners are part of the construction process right from the start in this case Ecomerchant, This is particularly true of insulation so you know what is available and the insulation properties, rather than rely on a single type of foamed board for all purposes. Dense insulations like woodfibre are better at limiting heat gain in summer. Compressible insulations like wool are better in between timbers which may shrink over time. Breathable insulations are essential for work on historic buildings. ‘Build tight - ventilate right’ is a phrase decades old, but still true. Make the building airtight, and carry out an air leakage test before completion. Aim for a figure of 1.0m3/m2hr or 1.0 air changes an hour. Don’t confuse draughts with ventilation. Become familiar with airtight membranes and tapes and how to use them. Never rely on builders foam or mastic for airtightness, these will shrink and fail within a few years. Very airtight buildings will need a mechanical ventilation system, which will provide consistent air quality, whereas natural ventilation will constantly vary and rarely be right. Heat recovery ventilation is worth the

investment when properly designed and installed, but cheap systems are a waste of money. Make triple glazing your default. Costs have tumbled over the last 10 years, and a wide range of options exist. Timber frames or thermally broken frames are best. The improved thermal comfort and noise attenuation is well worth the investment. Triple glazed windows can be icy on the outside, but still warm to the touch inside. Install them using airtight tapes or compression seals, and low expansion window foam which remains pliant and will not shrink. Consider building to the AECB Carbonlite Silver Standard or the Passivhaus Standard, to prove how well your building performs. Enjoy a comfortable low energy building with good air quality.

Ventilation EnviroVent’s ventilation expert Rebecca Mclean gives her five top tips for improving air quality during the winter months.

Tip 1. Act on the early signs of poor indoor air quality When you wake up in the morning, do your window panes and ledges stream with condensation? Have you any signs of mould forming around your windows, on your walls or ceilings, or in cupboards or wardrobes? If so, you may have a problem with a lack of ventilation in your home. As modern homes have undergone many energy efficient upgrades such as adding cavity wall insulation, double glazing and thermally efficient doors, this means that air cannot circulate between the inside and outside as freely and around the home, which often leads to poor indoor air quality. There’s no point ignoring it and hoping it will go away, or trying to remove it with one of the mould sprays you can buy in DIY stores – these simply tackle the symptom rather than the cause. There are a couple of options here; firstly you could leave your windows open for long periods – this is fine in summer, when, incidentally, ventilation is not as much of a problem, but in winter this can impact on the energy efficiency of your whole home, making it cold and uncomfortable. It is worth looking into the options with mechanical or extract ventilation as they can overcome these issues. Find out more information via the website www.envirovent.com.

Tip 2 Consider which rooms are worst affected Look around the different rooms in your home and make a note which areas are worst affected by condensation, damp or mould. Kitchens and bathrooms are traditionally the rooms that experience most condensation and are at greatest risk of mould forming. However, what we mustn’t forget is that moisture travels through the

air and can migrate through to bedrooms, hallways and other areas of the house. It’s a common problem to find mould is inhabiting cupboards and wardrobes too! It is worth looking into ventilation options, such as single room extract fans for kitchens and bathrooms, or systems such as PIV (Positive Input Ventilation) that are effective in reducing the problem throughout the whole house. PIV systems work by drawing in fresh, filtered clean air from the loft-space in a house or from a central position on a landing or the central hallway in a flat or bungalow. The system gently ventilates a home, controlling moisture levels, diluting high levels of humidity, whilst forcing moisture laden air outside. The result is significantly less condensation and reduction in mould growth.

Tip 3 Change your washing, drying, cooking habits There are certain lifestyle changes that can be made to help improve the indoor air quality in the home. For example, opening the bathroom window after taking a bath or shower, making sure the tumble drier has external ventilation, putting lids on boiling pans and avoiding drying clothes inside. These methods can help significantly and are advisable whether you opt to have a ventilation system installed or not.

Tip 4 Identify if condensation, damp and mould is affecting your health Do you feel in winter that your health is worse than summer? Do you suffer from asthma, allergies or any dermatological conditions? It may be that these symptoms are being worsened by damp and mould in your home. Asthma affects five million people in the UK every year. One of the ways asthma is triggered is through household dust mites and their detritus which flourish in damp, mouldy conditions.

Dust mites thrive in bedding, carpets and other soft furnishings, where there isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t adequate ventilation and where relative humidity is high. When their detritus comes into contact with skin or is inhaled, it can cause allergic reactions, resulting in asthma attacks, eczema, watering eyes, itching, sneezing and a runny nose. One of the best ways of tackling house dust mites is to reduce relative humidity by installing an energy efficient ventilation system. This considerably reduces the ability of the dust mite population to grow and contaminate the living environment.

Tip 5 If you are worried about the air quality in your home, get it tested! If you are experiencing condensation or mould issues within your home, then it is a good idea to have a home survey carried out by a ventilation specialist. Closing The Shop Door Makes Good Business Sense

Following predictions of severe temperature drops and a spare capacity of just 1.5% in National Grid energy reserves, GEZE UK is urging retailers, architects and specifiers to consider the environmental and financial impact of keeping shop doors open when specifying entrance systems. Independent research by the Close The Door Campaign, of which GEZE is a sponsor, found that retailers could reduce their winter energy consumption by between 30 and 50 per cent by simply shutting their doors when the heating is on. The retail sector consumed £3.2bn of energy in 2013 and as an industry has the second highest energy consumption in the UK. Research by Cambridge University commissioned by the Close The Door campaign showed that keeping a door open and using air curtains and additional heating significantly increased energy usage, driving up CO2 emissions - figures that were dramatically reduced simply by closing the shop door. An open door also makes it impossible to maintain accepted guidelines for a healthy working temperature for staff. While shutting the door drives down energy use, Kaz Spiewakowski, managing director of GEZE UK explained that specifying the right door will help to contribute to energy efficiency. He said: “By considering the environmental benefits of ‘shutting the door’ during the initial specification process, retailers, architects and specifiers can create an attractive welcoming entrance that offers maximum energy efficiency. “There are a wide range of sliding, swing and revolving automatic doors available to suit every application. Activation products such as unidirectional radar sensors ensure automatic doors are only open when a user approaches, closing again as they depart, which reduces ‘hold open’ time by 40 percent. What’s more automatic

doors allow shoppers to enter and exit a store without needing to break stride, juggle shopping or let go of a trolley. “Ultimately, for retail environments you need to specify an automatic door system that will open and close efficiently, maximise footfall and minimise heat loss or gain.” The need to reduce energy consumption is particularly important this year. In November, the National Grid appealed for more powerfor the first time in three years, whilst energy regulator Ofgem has warned that without action the grid’s spare capacity could fall to zero. At the same time, the MET Office has predicted temperatures as low as -14C in January. Jeannie Dawkins, founder of the Close The Door campaign said: “I founded the campaign after seeing the heat from open shop doors melting ice and snow on the street. It defies common sense you wouldn’t turn on the heating and leave doors and windows open at home, so why do so many businesses do it? “Independent research found that

closing the door makes a huge impact. It reduces energy use and cuts a shop’s CO2 emissions by up to 10 tonnes per annum for heating days alone, the equivalent of three return flights from London to Hong Kong. “But it’s not just about the environment, closing the door makes good business sense too. It lowers winter fuel bills, making shops more profitable and reduces shop lifting. Infrared heating is the winner when it comes to energy efficiency Incredibly efficient, highly controllable and requiring no maintenance or servicing, Far infrared heaters typically require almost 40% less energy than conventional ‘energy efficient’ electric heaters.
