Contractors on the £14.8bn Crossrail project have now finished all tunnelling work under London.
Over the past three years Crossrail’s eight tunnel boring machines have excavated six million tonnes of earth, created 42km of running tunnels and installed more than 200,000 concrete tunnel segments. The final tunnel breakthrough was at Farringdon in the City of London. The fastest day of tunnelling was on 16th April 16 2014 when TBM Ellie travelled 72 metres between Pudding Mill Lane and Stepney Green. Train services between Reading in Berkshire to Shenfield in Essex are on course to start in 2018, with full services operating in 2019. Crossrail chairman Terry Morgan said: “Crossrail is the most significant addition to London’s transport network in a generation and one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the UK. The completion of Crossrail tunnelling is a truly significant milestone and would not have been possible without the support and commitment of London, our contractors and everyone who works on Crossrail.”
04
Chief executive Andrew Wolstenholme added: “Crossrail is being delivered on time and within budget and will transform how people travel across the capital. Over the last three years, our highly skilled team have worked tirelessly to build these major new tunnels under one of the world’s busiest cities. The challenge now shifts to the complicated and substantial task of fitting out the tunnels and stations to enable Crossrail services to operate.”
New D400 ductile iron hinged manhole cover is healthy option Drainage product and access cover leader, Clark-Drain, has launched CD 1660H KMD, a ductile iron hinged cover capable of exceeding BS EN 124 D400 loading requirements, making it suitable for use in heavy traffic, e.g. main city streets and roads. Clark-Drain believes that the introduction of the CD 1660H KMD into UK construction will provide enhanced manual handling and health and safety benefits for operators accessing underground services and utilities. Fash Shahidi, Key Account Manager at Clark-Drain comments, “More and more, today’s road demands require regular checking and maintenance of structures and underground services to keep the UK network safe, serviceable and reliable. Making this process as routine as possible for road operators can save unnecessary lost time and cost.’ The CD 1660H KMD hinged design supports manual handling and safety issues by providing quick, easy and safe access to underground services and complies with the design requirements of
Highways Agency HA104/09 in low risk areas. Fash continues, ‘The hinge mechanism greatly reduces the risk of manual handling injuries compared to lift out castings simply by reducing the effort required to lift the covers. These are useful features particularly in restrictive areas such as motorway communication where there is limited operator access room. They also help with speed of access when operators need to check the condition of the pit and that of its contents such as drains, cables, gauges or pumps.’ Standard features comprise a 105° cover opening for maximum access, integral hinge stops when in open position to stop accidental closing and for fuller access each cover can be lifted out when moved to the 90° position. The cover also has a nonrock three point suspension design to provide long-term performance and stability in today’s busy traffic conditions. The CD 1660H KMD is Kitemark certified to BS EN124:1994 and has a 675mm x 675mm x 100mm clear opening size. A locking version is also available on request.
BAM wins two contracts in Belgium worth £37m. One is for the structural framework of a hospital in Liege and the other is for the second phase of the construction of a ring road near Couvin. In Liege BAM’s local operating company Galère will build the shell of MontLégia Hospital through a joint venture with BPC, CIT Blaton and Moury. The client is Centre Hospitalier Chrétien. The new general hospital will have 720 beds and 120 beds for day care. It has been designed by the architectural joint venture AAH, made up of Assar Architects - Artau - Hoet + Minne. The new building will comprise two 200m-long wings with six floors each. The contract for the structural framework involves an amount
of €50m, of which approximately €16m is for Galère. Galère will work on the road contract with BAM Contractors and Wanty. The project involves the construction of a motorway stretching some 8.6km and cutting across the hills to the east of Couvin. Approximately three million cubic metres of earth and rock will have to be excavated. Various structural works, including seven viaducts, will also be realised and 190,000m2 of concrete pavement laid down. The construction period will start in August and will last approximately two years. The contract value amounts to approximately €50m, of which €34m is for BAM.

UKTI highlights opportunities on Paris mega project There are opportunities for UK businesses in waste management for the Grand Paris mega transport project, says UK Trade & Investment. The project includes construction of an extensive suburban metro line with 69 stations and is expected to generate 40 million tonnes of waste that will necessitate ecological extraction and disposal methods using rail and canal. UK companies wanting to know more about opportunities in this project, including transport, construction and related waste management, are invited to register their interest. The UKTI team in France will then be able to provide further information, advice and details of suitable contacts. For further information visit the UKTI website
Priority School Building Programme progresses in north east Three schools getting underway as part of £2.4Bn Phase I. The Government’s flagship school building programme is making progress, with work set to start on further projects. Located in the north east, three schools have enjoyed turf cutting ceremonies as replacement buildings will be provided. The schools are Prudhoe High School and Whitehouse Primary School, both of which are in Newcastle, and St Joseph RCVA Primary School in Durham. The imminent start of work at these locations has been described as a “key milestone” for the Government’s Priority School Building Programme in the area. Established in 2011, the Priority School Building Programme will address the needs of the schools in most need of replacement throughout the country. Initially, Phase I of this programme saw 261 schools earmarked for improvement, though this has since been revised to 260. Already, more than 100 of these schools are either already completed or under construction
and a further phase was announced earlier this year which will see an additional 277 schools benefit from construction. Phase I is worth £2.4Bn and will see Prudhoe High School benefit from a £14.6M development that will result in a two-storey, brand new building for 883 pupils that will be completed in 2017. The existing school will make way and become new playing fields. Similarly, Whitehouse Primary School will comprise of two storeys and its existing structure will be demolished and replaced with fields. At £3.1M, this project will see a school constructed that is big enough for 2010 pupils and will be ready for the new school year of 2016/17. Based in Coundon, Durham, St Joseph RCVA Primary School will be a single-storey building for 155 school children. Scheduled to be completed next summer, this will cost £2.1M. These are just three schools out
of 31 in the north east that will benefit from the Priority School Building Programme and Schools Minister, Lord Nash, explained the importance of the programme. He said: “As part of our long-term economic plan, we are investing in school buildings across the country so we can transform the learning environment for tens of thousands of pupils and their teachers while delivering value for money for the taxpayer. “The start of construction work at Prudhoe High School, Whitehouse Primary School and St Joseph RCVA Primary School marks a key milestone for the Priority School Building Programme in Durham and Newcastle. “These new school buildings will provide modern, fit for purpose facilities for pupils and staff for many years to come.”

£1Bn transformation announced by Manchester Airport Terminal 2 will become the primary terminal building as part of the plans. A £1Bn investment plan has been unveiled that will transform Manchester Airport in the next ten years. Announced by Manchester Airports Group (M.A.G), the project will provide state-of-the-art facilities at the airport and will continue the development into a ‘global gateway’. The changes will see the airport double its capacity and Terminal 2 will become the largest at Manchester Airport.
expansion and reconfiguration, making it the airport’s main terminal building.
Terminal 3 will also be enhanced, but the project will see Terminal 1 – built more than 50 years ago – eventually demolished.
These two terminals will be linked up thanks to the introduction of enlarged transfer facilities and immigration clearance prior to a flight to America will be provided.
The Manchester Airport Transformation Programme will see work undertaken in a phased process so that improvements are made, yet any disruption to passengers is as little as possible. There are 60 enhancements in this programme that will help to drive economic growth and it is an important part of the Government’s northern powerhouse plans. Manchester Airport is becoming more and more popular. Last year, passenger numbers exceeded 22 million and directly and indirectly, 45,000 jobs are provided by the airport. The £1Bn development will see already-existing investment plans updated and re-profiled. Work will take place within the existing footprint of the airport, benefiting from the areas within the existing terminals. Serving more than 210 short and long haul destinations and over 70 airlines, the pace of change at Manchester Airport has been vast and the programme of works will help to accelerate this further. Terminal 3 will be improved so that more flights can be scheduled, while Terminal 2 will benefit from
06
Customers will find the airport an even more accessible place, with further self-service check-in facilities, expanded offering of food and retail outlets, new stands and piers to give better gate facilities at departure. Getting to and from the airport is also part of the investment, with planned surface improvement on access roads. Manchester Airport is a huge source of economic activity, with a contribution of £1.8Bn per year, and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, welcomed the investment. He said: “Today’s announcement of £1Bn of private sector investment in Manchester Airport is a massive vote of confidence in the north of England and in our plan to build a northern powerhouse. “The investment, which will completely transform Manchester Airport and double its capacity, will help ensure that it continues to compete with global airports across the world. “It will play a key role in this one nation Government’s plan to rebalance the UK economy and boost productivity and is fantastic
news for working people across the north.” An enlarged security hall will have the latest technology incorporated, making the process of moving passengers around the airport much quicker. Charlie Cornish is the Chief Executive of M.A.G and he commented on how the changes set out in the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme will ‘contribute’ to the northern powerhouse. “We’re setting out how the airport will contribute to the development of a northern powerhouse and demonstrating the dynamic, can-do spirit that sums up the region,” he said. “The Transformation Programme will ensure Manchester Airport plays its full part in driving economic growth and develops as a key part of the UK’s transport infrastructure, within a nationwide network of competing airports. “We continue to work closely with our airline partners to ensure that their requirements and those of their passengers will be fully catered for, both during the programme design and build, and upon its completion. “Over the next ten years, the airport will continue to develop as a global gateway for the UK, directly to and from the north, and these enhancements will enable us to further adapt, modernise and transform the customer service experience we are able to offer.”

London Assembly votes against Garden Bridge folly
The London Assembly today voted against plans for the so-called Garden Bridge across the River Thames. London Assembly members voted 11-3 in support of a motion calling on Mayor Boris Johnson to remove Transport for London (TfL) funding for a project that “serves no transport function”. The Garden Bridge is designed as a pedestrian crossing that will be planted with 270 trees, 2,000 shrubs, hedging plants and climbers, over 22,000 hardy perennials, ferns and grasses and 64,000 bulbs. Though much of the money is being raised through donations to the Garden Bridge Trust, the Treasury and Transport for London have each pledged £30m of public money. Liberal democrat member Caroline Pidgeon, who proposed the motion, said: “There are many locations along the Thames, from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf, where there is a far more pressing need for a bridge serving pedestrians and cyclists than the site of the Garden Bridge. “If the objective of the Garden Bridge is to improve London’s public spaces then it is folly to cut down more than 30 mature trees and reduce much valued open space on the south bank. £60 million of public funding could be far better spent improving numerous parks and open spaces across the capital. “At the same time it is vital that an independent audit is carried out looking into the whole procurement process as there are serious questions about how the design contract was awarded.” Labour transport spokesperson Valerie Shawcross, who seconded the motion, said: “We’ve seen
overwhelming opposition to the Garden Bridge from all parts of our community and yet millions of pounds of TfL and GLA funds are being eaten away by this unwanted project. “The Garden Bridge was sold to Londoners as a transport project and yet it fails to guarantee public right of way or step free access and there’s no provision for cycling. Local residents will undoubtedly feel the impact of increasing numbers of tourists in what is already a congested area and it’s likely we’ll see the fine open vista of the river and St Pauls cluttered and obscured. “It is wholly inappropriate to spend £30 million of TfL funds on what is essentially a tourist attraction which offers little in terms of actual infrastructure. “This is money which should be allocated to genuine transport projects, including building river crossings where they are actually needed, such as in East London. A full audit of the Garden Bridge procurement process is entirely right if the public are to have any faith in this project.” The Garden Bridge Trust, the charity responsible for construction and long-term maintenance of the new London landmark, last month selected a Franco-Itallian joint venture of Bouygues TP and Cimolai to build the bridge. The Bouygues-Cimolai JV is working up design priorities and methods, to be submitted to lead consultant Arup this month. Full design and construction plans are expected to be submitted to Garden Bridge Trust for approval in August and the construction contract formally awarded in September.
However, Caroline Pidgeon is more concerned about how Thomas Heatherwick was gifted the design commission despite having no architectural or engineering credentials. Although he employs some qualified construction professionals, Heatherwick himself is an industrial designer and artist who achieved celebrity for designing the London 2012 Olympic cauldron. He also designed a 56-metre high sculpture called ‘B of the Bang’, at the City of Manchester Stadium in 2005. It was made of 180 steel spikes but when the spikes started to come loose it had to be taken down. Under the envisaged programme for constructing the Garden Bridge, worksites will be established on each bank of the Thames in January 2016, but there will be limited construction work on south bank until September 2016, later than originally proposed to reduce impact on the area. Installation of working platforms to construct cofferdams for the two bridge piers will begin from February 2016, with the first piles sunk into the river bed during that summer. Work to build the landing stage on the south bank will start in late 2016, alongside construction of the north and south bridge piers. The main structure will be fabricated in sections in Cimolai’s manufacturing facility in Italy. Bridge sections will be transported by sea to the UK, staged at Tilbury for partial assembly, and then brought by barge along the Thames to the Garden Bridge site to be lifted into place. According to the Garden Bridge Trust, it will open in June 2018.

Falling glass kills worker on Wates tower A falling pane of glass has killed a 51-yearold man working for a subcontractor on a Wates refurbishment job near Paddington Station in West London. The Enquirer understands the victim was working on the top floor at Eastbourne Terrace where Wates is renovating the 18-storey office block. It is understood that a pane of glass being moved into position on the roof came free and fell on the victim. Wates said in a statement: “It is with regret that we can confirm that there was a fatality on site at 20 Eastbourne Terrace on Friday afternoon involving an operative from a subcontractor. “Our thoughts are with the family at this extremely sad time. “A full investigation has been launched and we are cooperating fully with the authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.” Wates started on site in June 2014 for client Land Securities with the project due for completion due next February.

POUNDLAND PRAISE TARK
D PLC KETT
June 2015 Retail Construction
With 573 trading UK stores in its ever-expanding portfolio, bargain-buster Poundland PLC is a retailer with one of the highest footfall figures per square metre on the High-Street. As figures reveal that an average Poundland store attracts around half a million visitors each year it’s no surprise that Tarkett, the UK’s leading flooring experts, were appointed to supply and install flooring in Poundland’s newest London store which opened at the end of 2014. Conveniently located in the Treaty Shopping Centre in bustling Hounslow, the 5,140 sq ft space is a great example of one of many successful flooring installations that have been undertaken by Tarkett for Poundland over recent years. With an emphasis on durability and resilience to accommodate for significant footfall, this project saw Tarkett’s iD Inspiration flooring in Oak Natural fitted front of house; this range was introduced to the market back in 2013 and has proved hugely popular across a variety of sectors. The flooring is manufactured with a 0.70mm transparent PVC wear layer which means it’s incredibly hard-wearing without losing any of its visual appeal. A TopClean XP PUR surface treatment also means easy, low-cost maintenance and high return on investment. The range is also environmentally friendly being 100% recyclable, and includes a minimum 48% recycled content. For back of house in staff areas and the Hounslow store’s stock room Tarkett installed Vylon Plus, a homogeneous vinyl floorcovering which provides an incredibly versatile flooring solution.

“We have been using Tarkett products for several years now for both front and back of house within Poundland.“ Mark Roberts, Head of Store Development, Poundland PLC comments: “We have been using Tarkett products for several years now for both front and back of house within Poundland. As a retailer with one of the highest footfalls per square metre on the HighStreet, we need a product that is hardwearing and performs well under pressure. It is important that the flooring not only withstands the footfall, but also the pressure put upon it by constant replenishment of stock. This means having to withstand stock trolleys, cages, wheelchairs, pushchairs and other forms of usage; the Tarkett product has stood up to this exceptionally well. Tarkett has a vast range of choice and offer exceptional value for money and we have yet to find anything that better suits our needs.” Terry Smith, Corporate Account Manager, Tarkett UK explains: “Poundland is a client that we always enjoy working with and it’s great to see how we can maximise the functionality of their stores with our fit-for-purpose product. Due to the nature of their premises, Poundland is always keen to install flooring that meets a number of criteria from its aesthetic and low maintenance qualities to its ability to endure high footfall. We’re also proud to be able to share our specialist offering and product range with Poundland for their European stores, including Spain.” Further information is available at Email: uksales@tarkett.com Call: 01622 854 040

Queens’ College Cambridge Selected Cambridgeshire based, Strata Panels to design and manufacture furniture for over 100 student bed rooms. Buying direct from the manufacturer – Strata Panels Helen Heath, Queens’ College’s Head of Housekeeping, wanted a local furnituremanufacturer to come up with a solution of making bespoke contract furniture that would fit in with the historic feel and dark timbers of the 1911 built Queens’ College Dokett building, as well as a more modern looking style Queens’ College Cripps Court built during the 1970s. Strata Panels based a short distance along the A14 just north of Huntingdon responded to the challenge having made student furniture for over 15 years. “Strata’s Mark Garrood listened to the brief and produced sample pieces of furniture that met our exact criteria and at competitive prices.” - Helen Both designs were made using European Oak veneered MDF, the furniture for the Queens’ College Dokett building had oak crafted edges that were machined to give the detail a period look and were stained dark brown to match the exposed timbers and wall panelling which gives the building its character. Handles were sourced from India that complemented the furniture’s appearance and completed the antique look. The furniture for Queens’ College Cripps Court had 26mm thick oak veneered carcasses and was finished in a clear lacquer.
Queens’ College Furniture Project – Strata Panels Strata produced wardrobes, desks, desk pedestals, chests of drawers, bookcases, under bed storage drawers and bedside cabinets for 43 rooms in the Queens’ College Dokett building and 64 rooms in Queens’ College Cripps Court. Working closely with the college, installation time was compressed to fit in with building contractors and the start of the autumn term. By working weekends and late into the nights Strata Panel’s own team of installers completed the 107 rooms in just over a week. Smaller items such as bedside cabinets and storage drawers were delivered preassembled, whereas the larger items were assembled in situ. Babis Karakoulas, The Domestic Bursar for the Queens’ College, on seeing the furniture after it had been installed, complimented Strata on how well the appearance fitted in with the age and character of the Dokett building.
Cambridgeshire’s contract joinery best kept secret – Strata Panels Strata Panels are small enough to be flexible and able to meet individual requirements, yet large enough to cope with the volume roll out. Hot on the heels of completing the project at Queens’ College, Strata are now manufacturing furniture for a new student accommodation block in Central London comprising 142 bedroom sets. Strata Panels take pride in manufacturing for schools, colleges, universities and hotels throughout the UK

Murphy joins Class of Your Own
to grow next generation of builders
Leading international construction and engineering company, J. Murphy & Sons Limited, has joined up to the Class of Your Own (COYO) scheme and adopted Blessed Trinity RC College in Burnley, Lancashire to help grow the next generation of young people into the construction industry. At a launch ceremony on 5 May held at Blessed Trinity RC College, Murphy Managing Director for the North, John B. Murphy met with pupils, the school board, and members of COYO, to officially adopt the school. The scheme is directly funded by Murphy who will support Blessed Trinity RC College with expertise and practical help, including giving students opportunities to experience the technical side of the industry through site visits, mentoring, and professional support from Murphy employees. Crucially, the scheme also empowers the teachers too, by giving them the latest in industry knowledge so they can better deliver the curriculum and have confidence in what they are teaching. Rob Houghton, Group Learning and Development Manager at Murphy, commented: “We worked with Class of Your Own at the 2014 NEC Skills Show and saw that it was doing great things to improve the perception and attractiveness of our industry, which was why we joined its Adopt A School scheme. Blessed Trinity RC College has been using its own initiative to deliver construction related projects, but without any committed industry support, which was why we were so keen to adopt the school and provide practical assistance in showing young people what a great industry construction is.”
18
Alison Watson, Managing Director of Class of Your Own, said: “If you google ‘famous engineer’ and ‘vocational’ and then hit images, is it any wonder kids aren’t interested in construction as a career? The images aren’t exactly inspiring! The whole industry needs to do much more to get across to young people, their parents, and their teachers that building isn’t just digging holes. Companies like Murphy work on some of the most exciting construction projects in the country, like Crossrail and the Thames Tideway Tunnel, and young people need to see that.” Sarah Fenton, Strategic Partnership Director at the CITB, commented: “Class of Your Own is a great initiative to give young people practical qualifications in construction, and educate them on the benefits of potentially working in the industry. With these qualifications young people can access University and higher apprenticeships. It helps reinforce what the CITB does by giving people qualifications, improving competencies and developing future skills. It will be really positive if some of the students from Blessed Trinity RC College complete their qualifications and ultimately join the industry. It’s about helping support the talent pipeline for the next generation.”
Class of Your Own is an industry leading built environment education provider, formed to inspire young people to learn new technical and professional skills and consider construction as a potential career. This follows the government’s industrial strategy which sets a target for young people to join the construction industry. The programme encourages leading construction companies to Adopt A School to provide training, support and resources to facilitate the ‘Design Engineer Construct!’ course, giving students fully accredited level one, two and three qualifications (equivalent to GCSE and A-level with UCAS points).

EASY REFERENCE FOR CLIENT QUALITY OF CARE AND COMPLIANCE IN THE BATHROOM Nursing and care home management and owners know that one of the most time-consuming activities is taking residents to, and helping them, toilet. And people handling- including helping them on and off the toilet- is the most common cause of injury to staff. Good use of toileting aids can address both issues at the same time. A new white paper- Considerations & Impact of Toileting Aids in a Care Environment, published by Clos-o-Mat- provides unbiased guidance on equipment selection, taking into account all relevant legislation, guidance and ‘good practice’. The guide is available for free download from Clos-oMat’s website www.clos-o-mat.com, and can be used independently, or alongside a similar white paper covering design advice for an accessible bathroom/ washroom. “There is much talk about delivery of dignity and independence to residents,” says Claire Haymes, nursing/care home specialist for Clos-o-Mat. “Choosing toilet aids can make a huge difference to not only fulfilling that, but reducing staff exposure to risk of injury through client handling. But an effective solution needs to be properly thought through: our white papers aim to give useful, informative advice that enables a compliant solution to be achieved.
“Clos-o-Mat is the UK’s biggest manufacturer and supplier of toilet aids for disabled and elderly people, so know the issues to be addressed, for operator, staff and user.” Clos-o-Mat, founded over 50 years ago, is the country’s only supplier in the sector able to deliver, in-house, design advice, equipment supply, installation, commissioning and ongoing service & maintenance on its range of bathroom/toilet aids. Its Palma Vita automatic shower (wash and dry) toilet and Aerolet toilet lift are the top-selling units of their kind.

Electric powered heating for Art Nouveau gem Atlantic Boilers of Lancashire have supplied their new CER electric boiler at The House for an Art Lover Glasgow. The property is owned by a charitable company “whose primary purpose is the stimulation of public interest in Art, Design & Architecture”. It was built in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow between 1989 and 1996 and was based on a design of 1901 by Charles Rennie McIntosh and his wife, Margaret McDonald. To provide space heating for the studio building, CER 1-12kW modulating electric boiler was chosen to input the heat. The boiler is ultra-efficient (99.5%GCV), provides precise heat input and is whisper-silent in operation.

INDUSTRY URGENTLY NEEDS CENTRALISED BODY FOR ALL CURRENT, PENDING AND PLANNED LEGISLATION AND NEW REGULATIONS….. Tony Gittings, of water heating product manufacturer Rinnai, argues that the industry is in dire need of a central body or council to co-ordinate the burgeoning weight of new and pending standards, legislation, Codes of Practice. This includes emerging support technologies such as BiM which needs clear and concise communication to the marketplace. Within the next 10 years the HVAC industry could change out of all recognition as we face an unprecedented set of challenges here in the UK and Europe. The industry is facing the relentless drive to ever greater energy efficiency and lower emissions – all in line with the UK’s legally binding carbon reduction target of 80% CO2 (on 1990 levels) by 2050. The UK government and European commission’s growing agenda for the enablement of the greening of industry has resulted in the emergence of new Building Regulations, green technology accelerators such as RHI and the commercial green deal. Also part of this is the introduction of new technologies, such as BiM, designed to unlock more efficient ways of working at all stages of the project life-cycle. And there is more – the implementation of Energy labelling to energy related products across the HVAC industry is currently underway. The UK and northern European markets are amongst some of the most heavily legislated in the world when it comes to the HVAC industry. The regulatory horizon will see amendments to the Building Regulations; the introduction of energy labels for water heating equipment; the tiered approach to emission reductions taking full effect from 2015 and beyond (under the guidance of ERP) thus continually driving efficiencies and emission reductions. There is such a blizzard of mandatory information that it is a job in itself to keep up with it all
– and all in addition to maintaining and servicing existing customers and, winning new contracts. There is a pressing need, I believe, for complete and transparent harmonisation of key product parameters and measurements to ensure simple and accurate communication. This need can be answered in the form of a centralised body – or council of existing bodies and organisations - which can coordinate all the information swirling around on industry topics which are of such major importance. The body or council - whichever wishes to take up the baton - should represent the information needs of the contractor, consultant, end-user, and property owner and manager. There is an overwhelming need for one recognised source delivering clear and concise information on all current and impending legislation. Manufacturing corporations can also make a difference bearing in mind
that the marketplace needs readyto-go products that obviously meet and exceed all existing legislation as well as pending legislation and new practises. This is where innovation is critical and manufacturers should truly commit to the research and development of new products and methods to make installation quicker and easier, and product performance better and more efficient. We cannot continue trying to wring the last vestige of life from modes of seriously outdated provisions of water heating in the commercial and residential arenas, not in today’s mercurial marketplace. I believe that the industry needs a single body for all the information needs. We would be readily prepared to financially support such an initiative. We can supply a value-added solution for today and the future – now.

‘OFF-GRID’ HOUSE IN SOUTH WALES HEATED USING
THERMASKIRT An innovative house in South Wales is combining multiple energy efficient technologies, including ThermaSkirt heated skirting board, in a bid to provide self-sufficient, renewable energy generation and water resource solution in an off grid setting. The flagship project has been jointly developed by SSE, Caerphilly County Council and BRE (Building Research Establishment) and is undergoing monitoring to establish the viability of future off-grid homes. The ThermaSkirt product was specified due to its compatibility with renewable energy sources such as solar and biomass, and its high heat transfer ability with low running temperature make it an energy efficient alternative to conventional radiators. The off-grid house project was conceived due to the Davies family needing to relocate closer to the livestock they keep on the South Wales hills near Manmoel. Planning permission was granted for a two storey dwelling in May 2011 and due to being completely ‘off-grid’ for electricity, gas and water the opportunity was taken to test a combination of renewable energy technologies and gain insight on the impact of living and running a business sustainably. Hot water is produced via a 20kW biomass boiler that is fuelled using the family’s own woodland that surrounds the property providing a self sufficient supply of logs. The hot water is then circulated through the heated skirting board to provide an even heat to the perimeter of each room. The compact design of ThermaSkirt allows it to free up space that would otherwise be taken up by wall-mounted radiators.
24
The system is easy to fit in any type of room with none of the disruption associated with installing underfloor heating. ThermaSkirt achieves a similar heat pattern as that of underfloor heating and has an equally rapid response to changes, with each room being controlled separately in seven different zones.
In a recent study ThermaSkirt was used to investigate the efficiency of heated skirting boards compared to traditional radiators. It was found that ThermaSkirt had a 50% higher heat transfer coefficient of 12.6 W/m² °C compared with the 8.4 W/m² °C of conventional panel radiators. The high transferred convective heat flux is due to the low fitted position of the radiant baseboard combined with the exposure of colder air along the entire length of the skirting board increases the thermal gradient and its ability to transfer heat to the room. The project will be monitored over a three year period under the Exemplar Programme run by Construction Excellence Wales with the generation and consumption of electricity, heat and water being constantly measured to provide valuable data on sustainable living. Further information on ThermaSkirt is available from Discrete Heat on 0845 1238 367, by emailing: martin@ discreteheat.co.uk, or by visiting the company’s website at www.discreteheat.co.uk

Roofing June 2015
Focus… on the Lead Contractors Association (LCA)
30 Years of Quality and Expertise Stuart Bailey Chairman of the Lead Contractors Association writes… After many of us have suffered such a long time with the construction industry in the doldrums, I am delighted to see the roofing sector’s demand for lead sheet picking up markedly across the UK. And of course with an increasing demand for the product comes a similar demand for competent installers and the increasing recognition of the skills and knowledge of members of the Lead Contractors Association. When I see an increasing number of specifications stating ‘leadwork to be carried out by a member of the Lead Contractors Association’ I think it fully justifies our determination to maintain our standards, even in the face of such a debilitating recession. Despite the economic pressures, we have not suffered the dramatic fall in membership that other trade organisations have faced over the past few years and as a result of our focus on quality rather than quantity we are now fitter and stronger as the industry enjoys the benefits of the upturn.
26
the 25 Year Guarantee Scheme option providing added peace of mind.
Using LCA members takes away that risk:
As the demands for experienced and skilled installers grows, perhaps there is even more reason to be wary of contractors claiming to be ‘leadwork specialists’or ‘approved by’ either the Lead Sheet Association (LSA) or Lead Contractors Association (LCA). Any contractor can claim to be a specialist, but how do you know? What standards do they work to and who checks their work?
• Members have their standard of work inspected by LCA vetting officers
Also, the LSA do not ‘approve’ or endorse individual contractors (although they fully support the LCA) and the LCA itself doesn’t approve or endorse anyone who is not a member. All bona fide members credentials can be found on our website visit: www.leadcontractors.co.uk The main problem is of course that lead sheet is such a wonderful material that can be shaped and formed by hand to fit any detail, so it is very easy for an installer to appear to have the necessary skills and knowledge.
Top of the list in preserving that quality standard is our vetting programme - the regular on site checks we impose on our members to ensure their work remains to the standards we and our client base expect from a specialist in the leadwork craft.
However lead sheet’s malleability comes from it being a soft metal and as such it expands when exposed to direct sunlight and contracts when it cools. If the installer does not allow for this when sizing and fixing the sheets, the natural thermal movement will be restricted and ultimately over time could crack and fail.
By policing our members’ work in this fashion, we protect the client, the architect, the designer, the main contractor and all the other non-specialists that use lead sheet in roofing and cladding. The annual vetting programme ensures our members continue to deliver the quality expected of a specialist, with
Of course this problem may take some time to become apparent to the untrained eye and by the time it does become obvious, the installer will likely have been paid and be long gone, leaving the client with no recourse other than a potentially expensive repair or replacement.
• The leadwork has to be installed to BS6915
• Any queries/complaints are investigated by the LCA and if a member is found to be at fault they must return to site to carry out remedial work or their membership can be rescinded. Very few architects or their clients are specialists in leadwork design and installation, but using a member of the LCA means you don’t have to be – we do the quality control work for you. If you don’t see the (LCA) logo, you don’t see the specialist.
How to join the Lead Contractors Association Membership of the LCA has very simple requirements and is open to any business that has been supplying rolled or sand cast lead sheet and installing it to BS6915 (Code of Practice) for at least two years. That is all - there are no other ‘barriers of entry’ to contractors wanting to be formally recognised as specialist installers of lead sheet. Building for Education
n
June 2015 Education
The Priority School Building Programme (PSBP) for school repairs has been extended throughout 2015 with an additional £2 billion fund which schools can apply for. RIBA’s Building a Better Britain report 2014 highlights the issue of how schools have had to repurpose music rooms and libraries to become classrooms due to lack of space. Fergus Pickard, Product Development Director, P C Henderson looks at how sliding door hardware can be used to alleviate these concerns. Space for learning The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reports that UK pupil numbers are among the highest in developed nations, with an average of 26 pupils per classroom. A further increase is expected, with the National Audit Office estimating an additional 1 million pupils in the next 10 years. As these increasing numbers put extra pressure on the space available for learning, it is essential for schools to offer flexible, multi-purpose environments that are able to meet future demands. Take for example Ruskin Mill College, an independent specialist further education college based in Gloucestershire. When its woodland kitchen was built, doors were intelligently installed to create an open and welcoming foyer or an extra enclosed and warm classroom, when required. As part of the Ruskin Mill Trust, the College provides residential education for 16-25 year olds from all over the UK with severe learning difficulties, including autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and developmental delay. During festivals, conferences and special events the kitchen is used to serve food and drink to the public. Sliding, folding or pocket door hardware can be used in schools to create multifunctional spaces that can be opened up or divided into classrooms with minimal disruption. This type of door hardware is ideal for light commercial use as it allows for multiple layouts, space saving and offer a safer option to intrusive swing doors. Furthermore, sliding door
hardware can also be used to create additional storage areas, taking advantage of unused spaces. Innovative overhead carrying systems by P C Henderson offer versatility as it is suitable for gymnasiums and sports centres and specialist activities such as cricket nets; these allow the area to be split to allow two classes to use a space at the same time. In addition to building regulations, schools need to comply the School Premises Regulations and Independent School Standards, meaning operational noise levels (e.g. of equipment) in teaching and learning spaces should be suitable for the activities taking place, and open plan teaching and learning spaces in new and refurbished schools will need to provide adequate speech intelligibility as measured by the speech transmission index (STI).

Education June 2015
Open up learning
Access to learning
To further improve the learning environment, schools can use sliding and folding door hardware to open up indoor spaces to the outdoors. These hardware systems allow for the creation of open and welcoming areas that are airy and make use of natural daylight which according to the World Green Building Council’s Business Case for Green Building Report, enables students to achieve 5-14% higher test scores and learn 20-26% faster.
As for accessibility, sliding doors offer schools the benefit of larger opening sizes both internally and externally. Various track lengths are available to cover a multitude of opening sizes as well as soft closing mechanisms to create a safe and easy to use system. This is important in creating learning environments that are accessible to all, including wheelchair users and people who use walking aids.
Lowther Primary School in the London Borough of Richmond is example of a school maximising on natural light with the use of sliding door gear, installing a system utilising P C Henderson’s Lift and Slide hardware. The hardware allows the sliding doors to function with a simple turn of the handle to unlock the door from its weather tight position. The doors then slide easily on the carriages with minimal friction and can be lowered and locked at any position by moving the handle down. The system can hold doors up to 300kg and offers excellent security and weather resistance with a choice of three CE rated weather levels.
30
Future proofing With demand for school spaces set to rise, it is important for schools to use the funding available not only to repair, but refurbish and transform their learning spaces to benefit students. Taking into consideration factors such as flexibility, access, light and safety, schools can become adaptable and reactive to future demands. The use of sliding, folding and pocket door systems can transform spaces to create extra classrooms, storage areas and make use of natural light with the use of sliding glass doors.

Bishops House Children’s Centre - Made Warmer, Quieter and Cleaner by Selectaglaze Secondary Glazing Nestled next to the normally tranquil Kennington Park, and surrounded by other beautiful Listed buildings lies Bishops House Children’s Centre. Originally intended for the Bishop of Rochester and built in 1895, he wanted it to be passed on to the community and used by the local children.
In 2004 his wish was fulfilled with it becoming a dedicated children’s centre and since then has transformed to an Early Years Centre. The central chapel of this Grade II Listed impressive Georgian style building has now been converted to the reception for the Early Years Centre. However in spring 2015 the Northern line extension works are to begin in earnest, which will disrupt the environment of the nursery until at least 2020 when it is due to open. The current single glazed windows offer minimal acoustic protection and any ill-fitting frames also allow dirt and dust into the building.

Helping to make your learning environment...
In order to maintain a quiet, clean and comfortable environment for the users of the nursery, Selectaglaze was tasked with providing a solution using its bespoke secondary glazing systems as a result of similar works completed on the Crossrail scheme. A fully independent tailor made window system set 100mm or more from the existing window achieves a noise reduction of 43-45dB and high performance frame seals both limit airborne sound and trap the dirt and dust. With the property being Grade II Listed, secondary glazing is a great solution as it is a reversible adaptation. Selectaglaze produce sympathetic designs for Listed building consent using sliding and fixed systems with locks to ensure permanent protection.

open plan or separate spaces. This design offers a reclaimed wood effect with subtle depth and unique detailing that replicates the beauty of natural oak planks. For superior cleaning benefits, Expona Flow flooring is cross linked and cured with Polyflor PUR polyurethane reinforcement for simple polish-free maintenance regime. Simon Peers from Barratt & Hughes commented, “Like Polyflor’s other sheet vinyl products, Expona Flow was easy to install and a quick way to create a statement floor that really adds impact to this room. We often work with schools and those whom I have shown this installation to have been very impressed with these results, I can see these chevron designs being popular choices.” Polysafe Vogue Ultra PUR, a heavy-duty safety flooring with a multi-chip decoration, was also installed by Barratt & Hughes at
Broad Oak Primary School. The Steel Blue 4740 shade was used in a corridor leading to the dining room and outdoor playground to provide sustainable wet slip resistance, crucial in areas where water from outside may brought in by frequent footfall. The Expona Flow and Polysafe Vogue Ultra ranges also have impressive credentials as a sustainable flooring products as they both achieve a BRE A+ rating for major use areas in the education sector and are 100% recyclable via the Recofoor vinyl take back scheme. KAWNEER SYSTEMS MEET THE NEED FOR NEW AND OLD
K
ey elements from the glazing systems portfolio of leading architectural aluminium supplier Kawneer feature on the new-build and refurbishment aspects of a secondary school’s £29million redevelopment. Kawneer’s 50mm wide AA®100 zonedrained horizontally-capped and mullion-drained structurally glazed curtain walling, AA®543 tilturn windows, and medium-duty swing and series 190 heavy-duty welded doors were installed by approved specialist sub-contractor Leay on the John Roan School in the Royal London Borough of Greenwich. Funded by the BSF (Building Schools for the Future) programme, the existing John Roan School of 1,400 pupils was extended to 12,700m2 across a split-site campus comprising the Westcombe Park new-build and Maze Hill refurbishment. The Westcombe Park building totals a 7,600m2 flexible, transformational learning environment for the middle years 9, 10 and 11. Accommodation includes a sports and amenity building which can be operated independently for the community.
34
Generally arranged over three storeys, a large, double-height entrance area connects the main education block and sports block. This level also accommodates classrooms, a central dining space at the heart of the school, design and technology labs, music and drama rooms, offices, drama and activities studios and DSP facilities. The area between the two parallel flights of main stairs in the entrance foyer features stepped seating for informal gatherings, break-out and performance. The first floor provides further classrooms at the perimeter, openplan ICT break-out areas at either end of an atrium void, staff bases, sports hall and changing facilities. Science labs, prep room and classrooms are located on the second floor alongside an open learning resource centre, other staff and office accommodation, and a winter garden. Also designed by architects John McAslan + Partners, the £8.6million refurbishment of the Maze Hill building proved more complex, it being a Grade ll listed Victorian building within a Conservation Area and the Greenwich Park World Heritage Site. There were also a
number of listed items within the twostorey building, including a staircase, ornate stonework and a clock tower. Work to the solid brick construction originally built in 1927 required sensitive restoration work in addition to sympathetic extension plans. Original Crittal windows and face brick required a full overhaul and new materials were selected in conjunction with the client’s key satisfaction criteria, Grade ll listing requirements, and the cost budget. Other works included demolition of the rear elevation and courtyard areas of the main building, rebuilding of the rear elevations and refurbishment of all other areas, including covering one courtyard with an ETFE roof. This project also involved the integration of new doors and windows into the existing building as well as the upgrading of existing hard and soft landscaping areas. Throughout the works the existing school remained in operation, requiring work-around solutions for peak school term periods such as GCSE and A-level exams. Works by main contractor Wates Construction were divided into six phases to allow the school to function continuously.

The Gulbenkien Ca at Kent University
afé y.
June 2015 Education
Project: The Gulbenkien Café Location: Kent University, Canterbury. Contracted company: SW Flooring (South East) Limited The job/challenge: The initial project was to replace the existing vinyl floorcoverings in the cafe as bubbles had appeared in certain areas. The initial area was 150 – 200 m2, but the floor area increased to 400 m2 after problems were encountered. The work was to be undertaken out of normal working hours, so that the cafe could stay operational during the day, to serve students and Staff members alike. SW Flooring were instructed to remove the existing floorcovering, prepare the subfloor with 1 coat of a smoothing underlayment, and replace with a variety of Dalhaus Sheet Rubber, and Karndean Vinyl woodplank. The works was due to be completed over a period of 10 working nights. SW Flooring removed the existing floorcoverings, and it became apparent that there was a moisture problem with the subfloor. SW Flooring were also presented with a variety of subfloors, ranging from 50 mm paving slabs laid onto 75 mm of sand, adjoining timber sections, ceramic tiles and screed. All with their own extremities and movement tolerances. Previous installations had been undertaken by other contractors by applying DPMs and latex smoothing compounds on top of each other at each stage of failure, which resulted in the moisture present in the subfloor, just constantly working its way to the surface failing each layer of preparation as it went. SW Flooring approached Kent University and advised them of the findings. Upon conversations with the Senior Building Surveyor, they agreed for SW Flooring to carry the work out using the correct methods. This created an increased expectation from the University to deliver a fault free solution. SW Flooring also had to appease the Client of the Estates Department, which was the Cafe`, to ensure that their customers were not inconvenienced in anyway.
The solution / implementation: SW Flooring started by removing all the existing latex smoothing compounds by hand with a small mechanical Kango drill. The timber section was replaced incorporating a structural DPM, and then was overlaid with a 6 mm of plyboard to increase rigidity. SW Flooring had to ensure the cafe was open at 8:00 am each morning during the project. This was achieved by making up the level differences with sand each night and then covering with Cordex to eliminate any trip hazard. SW Flooring needed high quality products from a manufacturer that instilled them with confidence, and also had products that could be used for this situation. SW Flooring had a very good relationship with the Richard Boorman, the UZIN Representative and he produced an UZIN specification for the project. He met SW Flooring on site at midnight at least twice a week to discuss the progress of the project, and offered valuable support, to enable the project to be completed. The specification was to apply 2 coats of Uzin PE480 to the paving slabs, incorporating an accelerator to speed up the drying time, for the reopening of the cafe in the morning. The second coat was fully blinded to create a mechanical key for the smoothing compound, and UZIN NC 182 was used in isolated sections to repair where the different substrates joined. The timber and plywood areas were primed using UZIN PE 630 and UZIN NC 175 fibre-reinforced smoothing compound was applied between 6 mm to 10 mm. This created a subfloor, that was suitable to receive any floorcovering of the Universities choice.
The result: The new floorcoverings have been laid for 10 months now, and apart from a slight settlement from the various substrates, the University are very pleased with the workmanship and specification that was created for this project.

AICO - MAKING SHELTERED HOUSING SAFER Aico, UK’s market leader in domestic mains powered Fire and Carbon Monoxide (CO) detection, has developed an innovative product to solve a safety issue facing people in sheltered housing and other vulnerable people that use Telecare/Warden Call Systems. Telecare/Warden Call Systems are commonplace in dwellings for vulnerable people and are an important tool to let people live independently in a safe environment – but in most situations they are not connected with the Smoke and CO alarms in the property. The new Ei414 Fire/CO Alarm Interface provides a dedicated connection between Aico Smoke and CO alarms and Telecare/Warden Call Systems, enabling an emergency signal to be transmitted directly to that system if fire or CO is detected. The Ei414 is a flexible device that interconnects Aico RadioLINK Smoke, Heat and CO alarms with most new and existing Telecare/Warden Call Systems. The connection to the Telecare/Warden Call Systems can be made wirelessly with Radio Frequency (RF) signals using RF Universal Transmitters, if available, as part of the Telecare/Warden Call
Systems, or via hard wiring directly between the two devices. As the Ei414 is a RadioLINK device and links to Aico RadioLINK Smoke, Heat and CO alarms wirelessly, it brings all the advantages of a wireless interconnect alarm system; these include far less disruption during installation, increased tenant compliance, more flexible coverage and greatly reduced installation time as a result of RF signal, rather than hard wired, alarm interconnection. Exceptionally easy to use, the Ei414 features a removable key with three settings: On, Off and Test. When ‘On’ the Ei414 responds to an alarm signal from House Coded RadioLINK Aico Smoke, Heat or CO alarms, and switches the relevant ‘Fire’ or ‘CO’ relay contacts to trigger the Telecare/Warden Call Systems. LED indicators provide visual confirmation of mains power and fire or CO alarm activation. The ‘Off’ setting stops all fire and CO alarm triggers being sent to the Telecare/Warden Call Systems, which is particularly useful if
a property becomes vacant. The ‘Test’ setting allows a responsible person such as a Warden or Fire Engineer to test the entire system, which would include a signal being transmitted to the Telecare/ Warden Call Systems. The Ei414 Fire/CO Alarm Interface from Aico comes complete with a full five year guarantee and has RF performance to EN 300220-1 and EMC performance to EN 301489-1. Aico is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics and is the first name in residential fire protection in the UK. All alarms are designed and built in Europe specifically to meet UK standards and regulations. For more information, please visit www.aico.co.uk.
REMOVE THE GUESSWORK - AICO LAUNCHES NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR ITS CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS Renowned for its innovation Aico is pleased to announce the launch of AudioLINK™, a revolutionary new data extraction technology integrated into all of its Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms. AudioLINK allows for invaluable real time data to be extracted via the Alarm’s sounder - all you need is an AudioLINK enabled CO Alarm, a tablet or smartphone and most importantly the free AudioLINK App. This data is converted into an Alarm Status Report, which is simple to review and store.
40
The Report is created for the life of the Alarm, and is colour coded to identify the urgency of any issue. The Report
displays useful information about the Alarm, such as battery life, alarm sensor status, number of times tested and removed; and detection levels of CO, including background CO, with details of when it occurred - all in a simple format. As the information is generated in real time, should there be an issue then it can be dealt with there and then. Additional information about each section can be obtained simply by tapping onto the desired area on the tablet or smartphone – this will then provide more detailed guidance to the user. The Report can accommodate additional information such as a site reference number, address or location before being forwarded via email or to be stored in a key location for future reference.
Aico and Ei Electronics have worked with local authorities and housing association across the UK to develop AudioLINK and believe that this innovation will benefit both tenants and housing providers. With this in mind the price of Aico’s CO Alarms will stay the same and the AudioLINK App will be free to ensure everyone gets the protection they deserve. Also, if that wasn’t enough all Aico CO Alarms now come with a 10 Year Life proving the best value protection.
A wholly owned subsidiary of Ei Electronics, Aico is a market leader in residential fire and CO protection in the UK. All Alarms are designed and built in Ireland specifically to meet the UK standards and regulations. 2015 sees Aico’s 25th anniversary. New pir option for Cygnus wireless alarm system The PIR functionality works best with the Cygnus GSM control panel which sends users an SMS text alert notification should an intrusion occur. The PIR sensors on the individual units are activated by using the menu settings on the control panel, and if an intruder is to pass the sensor in its activated mode, this will cause the local alarm to sound.

When any fire alarm call point or detector raises an alarm, it activates all other devices around the entire construction site, these devices normally situated in prominent places such as main escape routes and fire exits. In a similar way, when a first aid alert is raised, each first aid device will beep intermittently every 8 seconds, and a message is sent to the control panel to alert the first aider and can also trigger a paging system or can send a text if required.
All call points in the Cygnus system are IP rated for water protection and all detector units have internal sounders for alerting. There is also an option of a GSM datalink for remote access and text notifications of alarms to users.

Case Study: World-leading centre of design excellence features AluK twin wall façade system University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Swansea has invested £8 million into the refurbishment, restoration and extension of the Grade II listed former Central Library building to create the new Institute for Sustainable Design. Devised by Powell Dobson Architects, the development incorporates a stunning twin wall façade featuring AluK curtain walling systems, complementing and adding a new dimension to the original design. The modern, double skin façade extension provides additional 657m2, and incorporates a new reception entrance off Alexandra Road, workshops, teaching spaces as well as design studios. The original circular reading room has been restored and made available as a public venue. Yvonne Gibbs, architect, Powell Dobson comments: “Due to the context of the Listed Building, it was imperative that the new extension was as transparent as possible to express the original scale and features of the historic fabric behind. The University was also looking for a truly sustainable solution, to both reduce energy consumption and create an inspiring place to learn.” As the main extension to the Grade II listed building, the twin wall façade runs the full 38 metres of the Alexandra Road elevation. Designed by D2e, a multi-disciplinary engineering and management consultancy, the façade comprises AluK SL60 curtain walling system forming the internal wall, and structurally bonded glazed toughened laminated glass skin forming the outer wall, with an interstitial space between them. “This arrangement provides the transparency that the Listed Building deserves, whilst introducing a number of opportunities for passive climatic control,” says Yvonne Gibbs. “The facade is south facing and therefore through solar gain the space between the two skins heats up naturally. This in turn acts as a thermal buffer, which keeps the building warm in winter months whilst promoting air movement and cross ventilation during warmer periods. It also facilitates the introduction of fresh air into the space, which is attenuated through a series of louvers at the base of the facade to temper noise pollution from the busy road outside.”
46
June 2015
The gap between the internal and external wall allows to control the flow of air and temperature within the building interior, using the air exhaust louver on top and the air inlet louver at the bottom to create a ‘chimney’. In winter, solar gain can be collected in the buffer zone, brought into the building and offset the heating costs, while in summer, when overheating can be an issue, windows can be closed and heat rejected using mechanical ventilation. Banks of bespoke, top hung, open-in AluK 58BW window system are located on the internal wall open and close automatically depending on weather conditions, regulated by sensors located on the face of AluK’s SL60 curtain walling system. Manual operation is also possible to introduce further air. With a visual sightline of 60mm and a mullion depth of 150mm, the SL60 ensures that stringent aesthetic parameters set out by the architect were adhered to. The horizontal Vierendeel members, also designed to incorporate a 60mm face, ensured that the requirement of visual transparency of the main facades was attained. With demanding structural requirements, the 150mm deep mullion was adequate to conclude and surpass the project specification. Internally, the SL60 system seemingly spans 12 metres unsupported between structural columns. The support comes from a bespoke design of the aluminium Vierendeel Truss walkways, fixed at floor positions and supported by hanging stainless steel rods that are structurally retained in tension. These in turn act as a carrier for the glass Brise Soleil blades which run the full width of the building following the spectrum of the rainbow. Yvonne Gibbs continues: “They are multi-functional; environmentally, they protect the occupants and their computers from glare and they reduce overheating. Their multi-coloured appearance, created in conjunction with a local glass artist from the application of a nano-technology coating, also signals the creativity and aspiration of the University within.” Lee Jones, Senior Design Engineer at System Glaze, the fabricator on the project, comments further: “The SL60 curtain walling system and the external Vierendeel walkway act as a whole; this is the structural design intent, allowing the curtain wall to span over 12 meters - the full height of the lobby - unsupported. Implementation and erection of both elements at the same time proved to be difficult and due to tight programme constraints, the required design could not be delivered. The SL60 needed to be installed and glazed prior to the walkway installation, allowing other trades to progress. A series of temporary restraints and connection brackets were specifically design to ensure the curtain wall could handle the definitive wind loadings applied onto the fully glazed SL60 screen.’’ continues...
47
June 2015
AluK SL52 curtain walling system, AluK bespoke 58BW window system, as well as AluK single GT55 NI and double GT55 NI door systems were specified throughout the rest of the extension:
• Slot screen: AluK SL52 curtain walling system was specified for 17m run of curtain walling screen that is situated directly below the main twin wall screen to bring natural daylight into the basement workshop space.
• Access from the interior into the twin wall zone is via a set of AluK double GT55 NI door system at each floor position • Staircase 3: AluK SL52 curtain walling system was specified for a 10m high external wall screen that runs the full building height to enclose the staircase • Roller shutter screen: AluK SL52 curtain walling with double GT55NI door system insert was installed for a 4m x 7m wall screen that shrouds the roller shutter entrance door and provides ventilation via a run of fixed blade glazed-in louvres.
48
• Lift lobby screen: AluK SL52 curtain walling system with single GT55 NI door system insert was specified for an external 4m screen situated on the second floor that encloses the lift lobby.
• Internal screens – AluK SL52 curtain walling system was used for two curtain walling screens that overlook reception from the ground and 1st floors. The largest of the screens runs 5.5m unsupported and is internally lined with continuous mullion sleeve inserts with steel plates to provide the required structural properties. • Main entrance - A 12m x 12m structurally glazed spider glass system runs full height of the building and full width of the entrance approach, adjoining the twin wall on one side and the existing Grade II listed building on the other. The glass has a low iron with light grey silicone finish to give the appearance of absolute transparency. The glass wall is structurally supported back to a series of internal 525mm deep, 19mm thick toughened low iron glass blades. The 12m span of the blades was achieved with one joint to minimise the amount of stainless steel bracket components. An over clad entrance box with a double set of armour plate sliding doors provide a main point of ingress into the building, situated centrally within the spider glass wall.

Conservation area church access gets H&S thumbs-up thanks to Brett paving solutions
E
xpert guidance and paving materials from Brett Landscaping have ensured that the entrance to a medieval church in the town of Sedgefield, County Durham has been appropriately adapted to improve the access needs of wheelchair users and pedestrians. Originally built in the 13th century and protected by conservation area covenants, the hard landscaping of village green at the entrance to St. Edmund’s Church was in need of replacement setts, as the traditional quarried stone surface originally in place had become worn and uneven – causing access issues for wheelchair users, parents and carers with pushchairs, and pedestrians. Leaving the paving in its existing condition was not an option; however, any improvement works undertaken on the village green needed to be in keeping with the surroundings – a requirement
which led the Environment Committee for Sedgefield Town Council to research the most appropriate solutions: “As the church’s turning circle had become hazardous to walk or move over, we knew it was time to address its surface replacement. We needed a solution that looked appropriate, was reasonably priced, and could be installed effectively, while giving a professional-looking finish. “As the church and village green is situated within a conservation area, consultation with our local conservation officer at Durham County Council was key, as was our contractor’s suggestion to benefit from the advice, services, and quality materials of Brett Landscaping.” Understanding the importance of selecting the best match for the project in situ, Brett Landscaping visited the site to showcase several different block examples for the team to consider. The Council’s
Environmental Committee approved the use of 430m2 of Alpha Antique Burnt Oak & Charcoal, supported using a mixed pattern of Charcoal edging. Adding to its service, Brett provided a full design of the area being repaved together with appropriate laying details. Suitable pack quantities were also suggested and purposefully calculated to the nearest pack, to reduce waste and tighten costs. With installation completed and the paving work now in full use, the Town Council comment how pleased they are with the finished result. “Both Brett and our contractors have done a first class job. People using the church have commented on how effective it looks. The team had the project completed in time for our medieval fair, which will enable our Morris Dancers to make best use of the substantially improved and much safer stone circle.”

With Summer approaching the mind turns to outdoor living... Timber decking is the natural platform connecting our interior and exterior lifestyles as we head to the garden...
pre-drilled decking, pressure treated to HC4, with anti-slip strips in Exeter
Ecochoic heat mod
When considering different decking materials, there are four main options, all available from specialist supplier Ecochoice: pressure treated, wood-plastic composite, heat modified and naturally durable species. From the plethora of decking materials available, the most innate amongst them is wood. Wood blends well with any surrounding environment and will weather in an attractive way, making it a favourite with both developers and clients.
Pressure Treated Wood
Composite Wood
For budget-constrained projects in need of large quantities of timber decking with average service lives, pressure treated softwood deck boards are an appealing option.
Wood and plastic composite (WPC) decks are manmade materials that offer low maintenance, anti-slip surface and durable shape.
Standard pressure-treated softwood decking has a layer of preservative chemicals that is impregnated into the timber through the use of a high-pressure system. Absorption is often shallow and may even lead to leaching of chemicals after installation. Some of the previous chemical treatments are now labelled as hazardous, making the wood unsafe to burn or recycle. There are no guarantees that the current mixtures will not suffer a similar fate in years to come.
54
Any site alteration, such as trimming the ends, requires further treatment. A chemical envelope treatment is a cost-effective option when correctly applied. However, if even the slightest spot is left unprotected then the durability of the wood can be compromised. As it weathers, there is also a chance of splits developing on the surface of the wood, which can further deteriorate the treatment’s effectiveness and therefore the service life of the deck.
This is a new technology where both the types of wood and plastic, as well as their optimal mixture, are still being tested. The vast majority of this material is currently produced in China. Industry regulations are uncertain and the environmental impacts are currently expected to outlast the lifespan of the product.
Heat Modified Timber Heat or thermo modification is a meticulously controlled kilning process where wood is heated to a temperature high enough to permanently alter its cellular makeup. This chemical-free process drains the wood of all moisture making the deck boards incredibly stable. Even after the wood is cut or punctured, there is no need to treat the area to deter rotting because every single cell has been modified in this environmentally friendly process. These thermo treated woods acquire a darker, yet natural look, are 100% recyclable and safe to burn. Readily available species from Ecochoice include Pine, Spruce and even Ash, a knot-free hardwood.

Tropical Species
Cost-benefit Analysis
Tropical hardwood decks are famed for their natural beauty and durability.
Sustainable timber doesn’t have to cost more. There are many FSC and PEFC species available at no or very little premium, according to Ecochoice, who promote a variety of certified timbers. Adopting them can only improve your company’s image and lower its operational risk.
Ecochoice provides a variety of FSC certified hardwoods for your exterior projects such as decking, cladding and sleepers. This ensures the forests where these exotic timbers originate can remain productive for generations to come. Their range of certified durable timbers includes species suitable for domestic and balcony decks such as Pituca and Garapa, all the way to Opepe and Ekki for piers and footbridges. “And everything in between” says Joe Middleton, head of merchant services. “Clients come to us because we can help guide them through the multiple choices available. In the end, they get a certified sustainable decking, that fits their client’s demands for durability, looks and price, delivered to site on time.”
Benefits of Going Green Going green is not just a passing trend. Many government contracts will only be awarded to projects where sustainable design and materials have been incorporated. Private commercial and residential developments are also following suit in anticipation of their own cost-savings, including government incentives. The materials you choose for your bids can determine the future of your business as much as our planet. Timber, due to its carbon-sinking nature, insulation properties and low-embedded energy, is a natural champion for any project seeking a low carbon footprint. By insisting on FSC-certified timber you are contributing to a business best practice which, it is anticipated, will soon become standard construction protocol. It can also offer you an advantage in terms of client and employee retention while adding tangible value to your company’s mission statement when that statement encompasses sustainability goals.
Karen Ellis, of WWF-UK, reminds us: “Improving forest management, along with society’s growing expectations of the need for business to operate in a way that is sustainable and in the long term interests of society, mean that both regulatory risks and reputational risks are growing in relation to unsustainable timber.”
Your Source for FSC Certified Timber “At Ecochoice we are committed to providing quality products that will meet your pricing and performance requirements in an environmentally respectful manner.” says Mike Bekin, Ecochoice’s MD. Ecochoice offers impartial advice that meets your client’s demands as well as offer you the widest range of species, price points and turnaround times.
Add-on Services Your decking can be delivered with a wide range of extras including anti-slip strips. Deck boards can also be pre-stained or fire-treated to Euro class B requirements. ExternaL Lighting June 2015
One of the names you are most likely to hear when you enquire about replacing outdoor lighting with LEDs, is NIGHTeye from Timeguard, the firm that has consistently led the way with its combinations of innovative design, superior quality and fast-fix convenience.
Design The original ultra-compact pan-and-tilt Timeguard LED NIGHTeyes broke the mould and were a completely new concept in outdoor lighting design. Small and yet remarkably powerful, these floodlights are compact and stylish enough to be used anywhere.
A range of more business-like looking LED floodlights followed, with precision- designed lenses and reflector plates to ensure that the light that is emitted is not only diffused and more pleasing to the eye, but also give more comprehensive coverage for security.
However, successful as the first NIGHTeyes were, the market soon let it be known that nothing is ever going to displace the original, traditional bulkhead design altogether. So then Timeguard designed new LED bulkhead lights that are compact, strong and attractive, with the same design edge as the original NIGHTeye models.

al designs brought up to date This season has seen the addition of New super slim options to the range. Made from solid die-cast metal with polycarbonate lenses for impact resistance, they are tough enough for industrial and commercial installations and benefit from the even light pattern as do other models in the NIGHTeye range, thanks to the layout of the individual diodes behind the frosted light-diffusing lenses. Schools, colleges, offices and back yards everywhere win all-round: energy saving with faster payback, good looks, good quality and a straightforward installation job to replace old energy-guzzling bulkheads.
Quality and reliability Of course an LED lamp requires a lot more than the diodes – there is also a driver which needs to be suitable to last the intended life of the product and a heat sink to dissipate the heat produced and the all-important PIR detectors. The quality of these components is as important as that of the diode in building a long-lasting product. For instance, relatively few of the PIRs on the market are actually rated to switch LEDs which, despite their low rating, do generate a significant spike in switching. Some Led lamps do not even have proper cooling fins. Very cheap is rarely very cheerful. The most economical lighting of all is the lighting made from quality components which can be fitted and forgotten, and that usually means a trusted brand name like Timeguard. ENTURE INTRODUCES NEW LED LUMINAIRES SMART TECHNOLOGY
Venture Lighting has introduced a comprehensive range of LED luminaires with enhanced longevity and reliability with their latest VLED Integrated Driver Technology (IDT) system for floodlights, industrial and street lighting schemes. This latest system is operated directly from the mains supply without the requirement of a separate driver. The advanced technology of the IDT system helps to increase the life of the luminaire as there is no driver to fail before the 50,000 hour LED life. Comprised of individual 30W VLED modules, the IDT luminaires are available from 30W to 180W and as a narrow, medium or wide beam angle. The highly efficient LEDs result in significant energy and money savings. Venture Lighting’s new range includes VLED Highbay and Lowbay IDT systems for warehousing and other industrial applications, as well as a VLED floodlight, all available with optics for a 15°, 30° or 60° light distribution angle depending on the requirements of the application. The integrated driver technology and modular design of these luminaires make them particularly suitable for these schemes as they can be built to produce a variety of lighting levels, which is often a requirement for applications which demand a lot of fixtures or powerful light. The lack of driver means that the fittings are easy to install and require very little maintenance, minimising any unnecessary disruption to the work flow within warehouses and factories or down time of crucial outside lighting. The industrial, slim-line design of the luminaires incorporates a smart heat-sink for optimised thermal management to prevent the LEDs from deteriorating due to overheating. The fixture has been designed and tested to tolerate maximum debris without damaging the heat dissipation and consequently maintaining the efficiency and life of the luminaire even in the most demanding of applications. The VLED modules are also IP65 rated, meaning they are fully protected from dust and water, making them an ideal lighting fixture for a wide range of environment conditions. The IDT VLED systems have a Colour Rendering Index (CRI) of 80 at a colour temperature of 5700K, producing a bright, cool-white light, with other colour temperatures available on request. This high-quality light is excellent for reproducing the accurate colour of objects as seen under natural daylight. Further information on the VLED IDT Systems is available from Venture Lighting Europe on 01923 692600, or by emailing: info@venturelighting.co.uk or by visiting the company’s website at www.venturelightingeurope.com
