Government releases land to build over 100,000 homes
Wienerberger reopens mothballed Ewhurst brick works
The Government has announced that it has hit its target for releasing public sector land to build housing, with enough released to build over 103,000 new homes.
Wienerberger’s Ewhurst brick factory in Surrey has been reopened by Brandon Lewis, Minister of State for Housing and Planning, at an event that showcased the housing industry’s revival.
The amount of land sold by the government surpasses the original commitment set by the Prime Minister, and is expected to rise again by the end of March this year.

Property industry urged to take a lead on green infrastructure
The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) has urged the property industry to play a leading role in promoting green infrastructure in the UK’s towns and cities. The call comes as a UK-GBC Task Group publishes a new report, ’Demystifying Green Infrastructure’, green infrastructure into the built business opportunities – including a potential increase in the value of land and property – in addition to Aimed primarily at property developers and clients, the report failing to incorporate adequate green infrastructure into building projects – such as delays in planning, increased costs and reputational damage. The report, sponsored by Aggregate Industries, Canary Wharf Group and Skanska, sets out a number of tools that can be used to measure the value of green infrastructure – whether economic, social or environmental. It also includes 18 case studies highlighting good practice on green infrastructure conservation or enhancement. These include Canary Wharf’s new Crossrail station which features green infrastructure such as reed beds and water terraces (to provide improved water quality and biodiversity) and a new roof park amenity and wildlife resource).

Trimble Buys Specialist Software Company Linear Project provides scheduling software for, as the name might imply, linear infrastructure projects such as highways, railways, pipelines, tunnels and transmission lines. Linear construction projects present unique challenges, because the work is not performed in a single location, said Trimble. Linear’s Tilos software merges both the location and the schedule into one combined time and distance graphical view that changes as conditions change. Design details, construction challenges and the project schedule are incorporated into one view. Trimble has been collaborating with Linear Project since 2014 to create 3D constructible model interoperability between its software and the Tilos software. Tilos expands Trimble’s portfolio of heavy civil construction solutions for corridors by adding time and cost into existing on linear construction projects can integrate Tilos planning and scheduling for time, location and resources capabilities with operating and material cost information from Trimble. “Linear project’s Tilos software is used for linear scheduling of large infrastructure projects for rail, road, tunnel and pipeline projects” said Hubert Geier, owner of Linear Project. “We now have the opportunity to leverage Trimble’s geospatial technologies to record jobsite progress automatically. Third of parents say apprenticeship ‘best choice’ Commission finds
A cross-party Commission on Apprenticeships has vocational subject at school to increase the number taking apprenticeships. The cross-party commission, co-chaired by Conservative MP for Harlow Robert Halfon and Labour peer Lord Glasman, found that schools continue to promote academic routes, such as university, more enthusiastically than technical and vocational learning. In January, the CITB’s lastest Construction Skills Network report revealed that the industry will need to recruit an average of 44,690 people each year between now and 2019 to meet forecast demand.
Thieves steal arsenic-coated tunnel blocks
Around 1,000 timber blocks have been stolen from a historic tunnel in Dover. Police have now issued a health warning after it emerged that the blocks may be treated with an arsenic-based preservative. The materials were taken last week from the Dover Western Heights Tunnels which are owned by English Heritage. Police in Dover are appealing for witnesses or any information that may help their investigation into the Dover Community Safety Inspector Guy Thompson from Kent Police, said: `This is a heritage crime where these blocks are more than one hundred years old. It would have taken several trips to remove so many blocks so we’re appealing to anyone who may have seen suspicious behaviour in the area of Military Road over a period of time. Our main concern at the moment is to alert those could be a health hazard, especially if burned as fuel. Dealers, home renovators, collectors and the suspects themselves need to be aware of the potential danger.” Two suspects were seen on 27 February at 11am and one of them was a woman. She is described as in her 20s, about 5ft 2ins tall, medium build with black hair and a blue top. She was carrying a large rucksack.

Balfour Beatty To Build New Housing Development Balfour Beatty has signed an agreement with the London Legacy Development Corporation to build the new East Wick and Sweetwater housing development project.

Consultant Appointed For Manston Airport Decision The government has announced the appointment of a consultant to review the process on decisions about the future of Manston Airport. The Kent airport closed on 15 May 2014 and Thanet District Council has been seeking a deal to secure its future. Transport Minister John Hayes was at Manston today with leader of Thanet District Council Iris Johnston and local MP Roger Gale. Minister Hayes said: “I recognise the strong interest in keeping Manston Airport open, which is why the government is leaving no stone

Case Study: World-leading centre of design excellence features AluK twin wall façade system University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Swansea has invested £8 million into the refurbishment, restoration and extension of the Grade II listed former Central Library building to create the new Institute for Sustainable Design. Devised by Powell Dobson Architects, the development incorporates a stunning twin wall façade featuring AluK curtain walling systems, complementing and adding a new dimension to the original design. The modern, double skin façade extension provides additional 657m2, and incorporates a new reception entrance off Alexandra Road, workshops, teaching spaces as well as design studios. The original circular reading room has been restored and made available as a public venue. Yvonne Gibbs, architect, Powell Dobson comments: “Due to the context of the Listed Building, it was imperative that the new extension was as transparent as possible to express the original scale and features of the historic fabric behind. The University was also looking for a truly sustainable solution, to both reduce energy consumption and create an inspiring place to learn.” As the main extension to the Grade II listed building, the twin wall façade runs the full 38 metres of the Alexandra Road elevation. Designed by D2e, a multi-disciplinary engineering and management consultancy, the façade comprises AluK SL60 curtain walling system forming the internal wall, and structurally bonded glazed toughened laminated glass skin forming the outer wall, with an interstitial space between them. “This arrangement provides the transparency that the Listed Building deserves, whilst introducing a number of opportunities for passive climatic control,” says Yvonne Gibbs. “The facade is south facing and therefore through solar gain the space between the two skins heats up naturally. This in turn acts as a thermal buffer, which keeps the building warm in winter months whilst promoting air movement and cross ventilation during warmer periods. It also facilitates the introduction of fresh air into the space, which is attenuated through a series of louvers at the base of the facade to temper noise pollution from the busy road outside.”

Case Study Butler House Bristol City Council
Butler House is a 1960’s built, high-rise housing scheme that’s been adapted as sheltered housing for older people by Bristol City Council. It’s a place with a good atmosphere, where the tenants keep an eye out for one another and where there are even plans to develop a wildlife garden with disabled access. Like many social housing schemes however, and especially those not purpose-built, running costs are a constant source of concern to the social landlords. Reduced maintenance costs The corridor function, required, to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations, played an important part in reducing energy costs and, as the shared areas are now illuminated to a low level at all times, they are far more welcoming and far less threatening places. Arup assists in build of new UK mental health hospital
M
ersey Care NHS Trust recently opened its new mental health unit in Liverpool, called the Clock View. The new unit provides 80 beds for local patients and is designed to improve the wellbeing of its patients. Arup assisted Mersey Care in the development of Clock View. The involved in the creation of the hospital environment and provided design services. The Clock View is the recently opened £25 million mental health unit of Mersey Care NHS Trust in Liverpool (UK). The unit provides care for local people with mental health issues, including dementia, anxiety and depression, as well as short-term psychiatric intensive care. It holds 80 bedrooms and has been designed to improve patients’ wellbeing with natural light, with safe inner garden courtyards, activity and therapeutic areas.
The new centre replaces the mental health services previously provided at the Stoddart House (Aintree Hospital) and has been built on the site of the former Walton Hospital. To construct the new unit, Mersey Care collaborated with the Liverpool Sefton Health Partnership (LSHP)*, which co-ordinated the programme, as well as with Arup. working on the hospital unit since 2005 and its behavioural specialists and clinical psychologists have been involved in the creation of the hospital environment. In addition, Arup provided the full design services, which included BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment environmental consulting services, geo-technics and transport planning.
Commenting on the opened unit, Garry Banks, Project Director at Arup, says: “Collaboration was the key to success on this project. We worked closely with The Mersey Care NHS Trust and Medical Architecture to ensure that close attention was paid to the details throughout project. When Contra Vision® licensed laminated glass louvres were incorporated into the refurbishment of the headquarters of the European Commission the results, in terms of reduction in solar glare, noise ingression and energy consumption were striking; the primary energy consumption of the building was reduced to 218 kWh/m², 50% lower than a similar building.
