Wembley Contract Success with Vital Energi

RIBA Contracts Face Harsh Critique From Build UK

To follow from Vital Energi’s success in being awarded the contract for the North West Lands scheme, one of the key phases for the development at Wembley Park, it has been carbon energy solution to boot. To run between February of this year through to May of next, the initiative will see the company install a brand new energy centre fully equipped with a 854kWe CHP generator as well as 9 250kW boilers and an additional thermal store space of 12m3. Positioned in the Block E basement, the developments for residential use, and will also pipework as part of the company’s commitment to also supplying the network for distribution. Upon completion, the North West Village will incorporate around one thousand homes, in addition to amenities, food and dining venues and additional spaces for leisure and community usage. Vital Energi will be providing its solution as part of the overarching development for Quintain, under Wates Construction. And commenting on the wider project, Rob Callaghan, Regional Director for Vital Energi explained that the park village for the London area, but will also provide further infrastructure and support from an energy generation and distribution perspective. He added: “The developers have a clear view for a low carbon, sustainable community and we are thrilled to be helping them achieve that goal.” As such, the development will showcase a modern approach to sustainable communities and how they can be developed in a way which is both of interest to the potential residents, but also facilitate further growth and prosperity in the area as well as a degree of independent sustenance.

One of the UK’s leading trade assocations for the construction industry, Build UK, has urged contractors to take more care before entering into contracts with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). During a review of the RIBA Concise Building Contract and the RIBA Domestic Building Contract, it was highlighted that contractors were setting themselves up to take a large RIBA contractsThe small print means contractors are subject to potentially costly implications, including forfeiting the right to an EOT/additional payment if changes are made without the contract administrator being made aware within 10 days of the change instruction. Details of both time and cost implications must be forwarded by contractors under the two RIBA contracts. Greater awareness of the accompanying responsibilities and obligations is therefore required and, if in doubt, contractors should seek appropriate legal advice. The research was carried out by legislation expert and industry body, the Contractors Legal Group (CLG), of which Build UK is a member. The Concise Building Contract is designed for smallscale commercial building projects while the Domestic Building Contract covers the breadth of non-commercial work, including: new builds, extensions, renovations and maintenance. Following CLG’s review, Build UK also pointed out the lack of standard sub-contracts to go hand-in-hand with the RIBA contracts. For contractors reliant on their supply chain, RIBA’s contracts could therefore prove a costly learning curve. The trade association insisted that any and all subcontracts should be clear and need to adhere with RIBA’s RIBA has since been made aware of the issues raised by CLG and Build UK. The organisation is currently reviewing the two contracts though its is not expected to published the revised versions until later this year. It is hoped the revisions will take into account the disproportionate risk

“The awarded money was great news for the club.” Explained Club Chairman, Phil Christopher “With the original building built in 1974 and costing more time and money to maintain, the fund gave us the opportunity to refresh and replace certain elements of the building.” The refurbishment work was carried out by S & C Builders of Wortley (Leeds) who along with extensive alterations to the interior of the club house also made a dramatic change to the grounds and exterior. As well as new Aluminium windows and door sets, rendering, car park and patio resurfacing and disabled access a new durable and stylish Aluminium rainwater system and fascia manufactured and supplied by Yeoman Rainguard was installed. 75mm dia. down pipes and 125 x 100mm MOG gutters from Yeoman Rainguard’s eco-friendly SL range were installed and complemented with a Motif and a specially fabricated

WORK FROM HEIGHT WITH THE DICKIES NEW FALLX SUIT Dickies recently launched the Fallx Suit at SPE Offshore Europe in Aberdeen ideal for all those working at height and for those working in confined and tight spaces. 14

Fallx is a new concept incorporating fall arrest with regular coveralls. The design combines complete fall protection and the versatility of regular coveralls. As well as being practical, lightweight and extremely comfortable compared to a traditional harness, Fallx can provide a solution to issues of compliance, safety and comfort. It is also suitable for use as a rescue harness (EN 1497) and is used in many applications from working at ERT teams where its ability to be donned quickly provides critical extra seconds. The Fallx Coverall is manufactured using Nomex Comfort, which is an inherently temperature meta-aramid fabric that does not have any FR chemical treatments applied throughout the textile process. It does not melt and

drip or support combustion in the air. A key factor of Nomex is its ability to carbonize and thicken when exposed to intense heat, which creates a protective barrier between the heat source and the wearer’s skin minimising burn injury, almost comparable to the way a modern car protects its passengers with air bags. The Nomex® Fallx is tested and CE approved as a combined system to meet EN361: 2002, EN 11612:2008 A1 B1 C1 and EN1149-5 2008 and as mentioned EN 1497. It has also been fall tested after worker safety in all scenarios. In some instances, workers are provided with non-FR harnesses, which are then worn over FR coveralls. This is non-compliant. Non-FR equipment cannot be worn over FR on FR sites.

Making homes fit

Vision London By Josephine Smit

Hardly a day goes by right now without housing hitting the headlines. Whether it is the shortage of new homes and skilled labour to build them, soaring rents and sales prices, or the latest twist and turn of government policy, the h-word is constantly in the news. Many of these factors are driving fresh approaches and innovation in the design, construction and upgrading of homes and communities, also taking on board other pressing concerns, particularly the need to raise energy poverty. This fresh thinking is taking many forms, as Vision London demonstrates in its seminar programme covering Innovation in Architecture and Design. The programme, which runs over 7 and 8 June 2016 at Olympia London, showcases a broad range of project types – from the new Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to architect Flanagan Lawrence’s acoustic shells on the Littlehampton seafront but the key focus of attention is housing.

to switching on one whole power station. After millions of pounds of CERT and CESP funding for insulation over the past few years, this is depressing reading. The easiest solution Is to prevent loft insulation from being compressed by the use of a raised deck above it. One such system, the LoftZone StoreFloor raised loft deck, provides safe storage and access space without compressing the insulation. You wouldn’t put external wall insulation on to a building and not protect it with a protection too?

PHEX+ returns to the People’s Palace Returning to Alexandra Palace for its third year, PHEX+ has established itself as a key event not only for domestic and commercial engineers, but contractors, specifiers and facilities managers in the HVAC industry. Taking place from 18 to 19 May, the plumbing and heating exhibition is playing host to more than 100 exhibitors, specialising in everything from sanitaryware and pipe systems to tools and training. The free event opens its doors at 10am and visitors who arrive before 11am can even enjoy a bacon roll on the house. Having recognised that there was a potential gap in the market for an exhibition that brought domestic and commercial suppliers and products together in one place, PHEX+ launched in 2014 with great success. The show has gone from strength to strength, with over 90% of the industry’s boiler manufacturers in attendance and more than 20 companies launching new products over the two days. The venue is easy access from north of London in particular, with 1,500 free parking spaces for visitors, as well as good transport links from nearby train stations and free coach travel from participating merchant branches. learn about new products and services exclusive show discounts and competitions.

“The beauty of PHEX+ is that it’s relevant for everyone from one man bands to large contractors and housing associations,” said event organiser Claire Tilbury. “Meeting and greeting people face-to-face can be so important in this line of work and the discussion of projects and deals to be worked out.” This year PHEX+ has taken feedback from visitors to tailor its Tech Talks programme, which includes presentations from a number of trade associations as well as practical training sessions from leading manufacturers. Gas Safe Register will be delivering a series of seminars as part of a broader ‘Back to Basics’ campaign, which sets out exactly what role the Register has to play in industry and provides some updates on key industry issues. Also taking to the stage, the Energy Saving Trust and Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering will be addressing of industry. Among those exhibiting at PHEX+ this year are Worcester, Danfoss, Fernox, Stuart Turner and Henkel. For more information and to book your free ticket, visit www.phexshow.co.uk/register.

BITUCHEM’S MAINTENANCE FREE MATERIAL USED FOR MAJOR UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT Bituchem’s specialist hard landscaping material has been applied to provide a new landscape for Hertfordshire University’s College Lane Campus.

As part of a major redevelopment project of the university’s existing campus, Bituchem supplied around 3000m² of its bestselling Natratex Gravel to provide maintenance-free footpaths across the campus. The project, headed by Bouygues UK, brings new and exciting facilities to the university that creates an inclusive living and learning environment on one campus. The overall scheme comprises both new building and refurbishment works that will bring over 2500 new student bedrooms, social spaces, sports pitches and a campus gym. The scheme is being developed over three phases which are set to be completed by September 2016, following three academic years of construction and refurbishments. Included in these development works is the surfacing of existing and new footpaths, for which Bituchem’s Natratex Gravel was used. The material presents a surface that contrasts with the surrounding black tarmac to form aesthetically pleasing pathways to match the modern surroundings of the university campus. The Natratex Gravel footpaths are just one part of the attractive landscape created by The Landmark Practice (www.thelandmarkpractice.com),
