Bond Bryan Architects project ‘Charles Street’ shortlisted for Brick Awards Bond Bryan Architects is delighted that its Sheffield Hallam University, Charles Street project has been shortlisted for the Brick Awards within the Education Building Award category.

The prestigious awards ceremony, hosted at The Hilton, Park Lane, will take place 9 November 2017.

The annual Brick Awards celebrates the use of clay brick in every aspect of design and construction. Recognising the excellence of architects, developers, manufacturers and brickwork contractors, the Brick Awards has established a reputation as one of the industry’s most respected and well-attended events.

Brickwork is a key component of the Charles Street project and its context; Bond Bryan approached the design and detailing of this element as an opportunity to engage with the immediate context whilst also reflecting the historical significance found within the detailing of the adjacent Grade

II listed Butcher Works building.

All bricks for the project were provided and made bespoke by Forterra in the Wilnecote factory in Staffordshire and installed

by Marlborough Brickwork Contractors.

Working alongside the specialists, Bomd Bryan Architects utilised a

The designs for the project were put forward by Watson Batty Architects and they have received full planning approval. The project has been valued at £19 million.

Watson Batty Architects worked closely with their client, Places for People, in order to come up with plans that would transform the 23,400 sq ft facility already on the proposed site, into a purpose built 41,000 sq. ft. space with

This project will create the town’s first public swimming pool which will feature eight 25 metre lanes as well as a moveable floor and spectator seating. The leisure facilities will also include a 4-court sports hall and a fitness suite with 110 different stations and an indoor cycling studio. As part of the designs there is also four flexible studios indoor health studio with a sauna, steam rooms, wet and dry treatment rooms.

Watson Batty has been working to devise the project with Places for People, Runnymede Borough Council and Active Lifestyle which is the centre’s operators. Also involved in the drafting of the proposal were a number of other consultants in order to make the most out of the developments. The consultation took over a year and a public consultation was also held in order to make sure that they deliver facilities for the local communities and make sure that they receive the optimum capital investment for the project.

Moisture can cause complex problems in buildings, especially as all building products and structures, even vapour barriers, allow some vapour through. To meet current regulations you need to measure this permeability for the finished system and / or that of each of the products, barriers and coatings involved.

And that’s what Versaperm’s latest water vapour permeability meter can do for you.

The latest Versaperm vapour permeability measurement system measures this to an accuracy that can be measured in Parts Per Million (PPM) and is particularly important for both new product development and quality control. It can measure the permeability of anything from a building board to a coating of paint or from a vapour barrier to an entire wall, roof or floor structure.

The water vapour that seeps into a building gets trapped and then finds it difficult to escape affecting both the health of the building’s structure and the health of people who live or work inside. It has been linked to asthma, allergies and even the collapse of buildings.

Cary Tamarkin constructs Island Creek home in the Hamptons with local materials New York City architect-developer Cary Tamarkin has built a modernist home in the Hamptons using locally sourced wood and stone, to match the area's historic architecture.

Tamarkin constructed the Island Creek house in Southhampton, a getaway destination for affluent New Yorkers escaping the city’s summer heat.

The design nods to Long Island’s vernacular “beach modernism” architecture. Many homes in the area – including those on Fire Island – were built in the 1950s and 1960s with inexpensive materials sourced from the region.

Leroy Street Studio updates traditional New England architecture for harbour-side Cove House A harbour view is framed through the gap between the two sides of this house in Massachusetts by New York firm Leroy Street Studio.

Cove House extends across a sea-facing slope in Woods Hole, a coastal town in the south of the state, overlooking the Vineyard Sound.

Leroy Street Studio designed the home as a modern adaptation of the historic shinglecovered buildings found in the area.

“The Cove House embodies the client’s desire for a contemporary house that is deferential to the New England vernacular,” said the architects, which also recently completed two houses on Long Island.

The building is split into two, with the separate sections positioned at slightly different angles towards the sea. They are buried into the hillside, so they are less imposing from the street but open up fully to the ocean, and are linked below grade.

Both sides are two storeys high, although one is a touch taller than the other so their gabled roofs can overlap.

“The massing defines an upper utility court and kitchen garden, with a dynamic interstitial space that frames the ocean view,” said Leroy Street Studio. “The resulting form defines the landscape spaces of the site, embodies the tautness and linearity of the shingle style, and references the sailing ships that once anchored in the neighbouring harbour.”

Brighton’s Circus Street transformation begins Shedkm have started work on a new mixeduse development in Brighton that will transform a derelict inner-city site Construction has begun on Circus Street, a £130m innovation quarter on the site of the old municipal market in Brighton in the UK. Architects shedkm in collaboration with developers U+I have created an ambitious new masterplan development with a strong sense of place, distinct yet in tune with the unique city of Brighton and its people. shedkm’s masterplan is conceived as a rich composition of distinctive buildings and public spaces woven together to create a

new destination. The design draws on the ‘patchwork’ of building styles within the Brighton cityscape and reinterprets them as part of a progressive and sustainable new quarter. The result is an exemplar urban design for mixed-use development.

Situated on Circus Street at the edge of Brighton’s academic district, the ambitious new 0.73ha mixed-use project is a redevelopment of a derelict municipal fruit and vegetable market.

Led by regeneration specialist U+I, in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council and South East Dance, the plans for Circus Street include 142 new homes, 450 student bedrooms, 30,000 sq ft of business and start-up space, and a world-class international Dance Space.

Brand new £25m Ayr Academy building is delivered by hub South West on behalf of South Ayrshire Council A new Ayr Academy secondary school, built by Keir Construction and delivered by construction and infrastructure-focused partnership hub South West on behalf of South Ayrshire Council, is set to open when the school summer holidays end later this month.

Ayr Academy, whose origins can be traced back to 1233 but did not come to be known by its present name until 1796, has moved to the Craigie Estate from its former location in the town’s Fort Street.

The new Ayr Campus will cater for 1,000 school students, with the capacity for a further 300, and will create a modern and inclusive facility where students can learn in a sustainable and well-designed environment.

The £25M project is a part of a £94m pipeline being delivered by the authority across South Ayrshire in the next 18 months with the aim of enhancing standards through targeted investment.

During its construction the new Ayr Academy was used as a part of hub South West’s bespoke programme, ‘Your Future starts in Construction’, during which it collaborated with the Prince’s Trust and Ayrshire College to enable local youngsters to gain work experience on a live site and achieve a unique accreditation.

LEVEL CHANGE SOLUTIONS commercial or residential

There will be 14 one and two bedroom houses built as part of this construction project undertaken by Decorean and the construction firm has managed to get prior approval for the residential construction.

Decorean is currently working on 70-80 different sites across the country with plans for 40 more projects in the pipeline waiting to go ahead. The company fort started operating in 2010 and has managed to become one of the biggest and fastest growing construction companies in London.

The houses are expected to be ready for sale by the late autumn of next year, 2018. The residential redevelopment will be finished to the highest possible specification and will also have access to a secure car park on the plot. The apartments, when completed will epitomise the focus of Decorean to be dedicated to perfection and the current three story, 1980s building on the site will be given a new lease of life.

Farrow Court Sheltered Housing The job/challenge:

Farrow Court is one of Ashford’s older sheltered housing schemes. Planning permission was granted to redevelop the site to provide a new dementia-friendly facility comprising a much larger day centre for use by the local community as well as the residents of Farrow Court.

xden Floors Limited were contracted by Bouygues UK to supply and install floor coverings to 33 flats and communal areas totalling 4000 square metres as part of the new build works of Phase 1. Due to some design oversights, the main contractors were forced to use a pumpable anhydrite screed to the first and second floor levels. A site survey by Oxden Floors Limited identified a number of issues with the screed. There was evidence of laitance on the surface of the anhydrite substrate and areas of damaged floor screed due to ingress of rain and cracks. The flooring contractor also advised the client that moisture measuring was required to establish the moisture content within the screed.

The solution / implementation: With UZIN’s specialist range of products for remedial work and systems for calcium sulphate screeds Oxden Floors Limited approached their UZIN Technical Sales representative, Jon Turbutt, to undertake the moisture testing and provide a recommendation. Jon submitted a written specification to enable the floor covering installation to proceed. Together with the site team it was agreed that the laitance needed to be removed and the damaged areas of screed repaired.

This was undertaken by the flooring contractor prior to any further works taking place. Following the results of the moisture testing which took place in each unit and different sections of the communal areas Oxden Floors Limited applied 2 coats of UZIN PE 404, a coat UZIN PE 280 topped with UZIN NC 150 for readings between

75 – 80% relative humidity (RH). For readings between 80 – 90% RH the flooring contractor applied 2 coats of UZIN PE 425, 2 coats UZIN PE 404, a coat of UZIN PE 280 and finished with UZIN NC 150 water mix smoothing compound. This provided a solid, sound and quality base in which to commence the floor covering installation. UZIN 57 carpet adhesive and UZIN KE 2000 S pressure sensitive were used to install the carpet and vinyl floor coverings respectively. All products have been awarded an EC1 plus classification for being very low emission and ideal for use in sensitive environments such as sheltered housing.

The result: Although the complications with the screed added a fair amount of additional work to a challenging 10 week programme, between the site operatives and Oxden Floors Limited the overall hand over date was not compromised. The final finish of the subfloor preparation was well received by all and ensured a quality finish for the carpet and vinyl installation with the use of UZIN adhesives. Due to the professional advice offered and quality of the works Oxden Floors Limited have now secured the contract for Phase 2 of the project and additional 6500 square metres due for commencement in early 2017.

he flagship development, by St Edward, includes a collection of bespoke suites, penthouses and apartments set in London’s cultural heartland.

FILAPROJECT worked alongside Stone & Ceramic to provide ‘initial clean’ and maintenance solutions for the multiple tile designs specified, including a dramatic stone feature wall within the development’s private spa complex.

Situated within Westminster’s world-famous ‘Strand’, the development spans six iconic buildings, designed by Grid Architects and set within a private, landscaped square.

Natural stone and porcelain surfaces feature throughout the luxurious kitchens and bathrooms, and residents’ Business and Leisure Suites.

Stone & Ceramic’s installation includes mosaics and porcelain tiles for the stunning pool surround and stone for the imposing 70m2 feature wall.

A variety of porcelain and natural surfaces were also installed throughout ‘The Colonnade’ business centre, including a five-metre long stone feature desk.

Working alongside Stone & Ceramic, FILAPROJECT recommended a range of treatments for the different surfaces and their specific locations.

All treatments provided high performance whilst safeguarding the surface characteristics.

New Blowerproof Liquid set to transform air-tightness of buildings Airtightness is a dominant factor affecting a building’s energy performance. It can be argued that airtightness is more important than insulation in terms of thermal performance. Even small gaps in doors and windows can cause significant heat loss and once a building is constructed, stemming unwanted air flow can prove difficult and expensive.

When deciding how to seal construction gaps, one common option is to use a polyurethane-based, spray foam filler or silicone or acrylic sealant to ensure airtightness, but there are acknowledged problems, with shrinkage and adhesion being the main disadvantages.

Once a Certificate has been issued, six monthly surveillance of production and comprehensive three yearly reviews are required to maintain its validity.

Yeoman Shield Help to Maintain Standards at Oldham School.

The new building of North Chadderton School, Oldham was built in 2013 providing facilities for up to 1500no. students aged between 11 & 18 years.

Built without the provision of wall protection to the school’s interior walls, Facilities Manager William Wheatcroft soon noticed that the plastered, white walls, were suffering marking and superficial damage detrimental to maintaining the school’s high standards.

“We needed a permanent solution to our problem of continually re-decorating and cleaning the walls along corridors and congregational areas of the school – which was proving to be a drain on the maintenance budgets.” Explained Mr Wheatcroft.

Yeoman Shield, manufacturers and installers of wall & door protection products, were called in to survey areas in the school most needing wall protection, where it was decided that 2.0mm thick FalmouthEx protection panels would be the answer to stopping the continual damage.

The work was to be phased over time as and when budgets became available. The first area to be fitted with Yeoman Shield FalmouthEx protection panels at 1250mm high, in white, were the dining room, boys WC on the ground, 1st & 2nd floors, reception exit area and along the flat to raking wall of the Assembly Hall Stage. Other areas which have received the same treatment over the past 2 of years have included, staircases, refuse points, sports exit lobby, performing arts and music centre along with staff changing facilities.

“There has definitely been a marked difference in the time spent re decorating and sorting out wall damage which I am sure is resulting in a year on year saving in our maintenance budgets.

Our cleaning team have also commented that the wall protection panels are certainly easier to wipe down than the painted wall finish.

“We are very happy with the finished products and the workmanship supplied by Yeoman Shield over the years and we will be continuing with the roll out of the wall protection programme in the future.”

August 2017 Floors & Walls The Pinderfields facilities management team work hard to maintain, but splinters, dents and crevices caused as a result of the damage, make the frame work hard to clean leading to a potential build-up of dirt and bacteria.

Michael Kenward, Engie Capital Works Co-ordinator at Pinderfields Hospital commented “We have in the region of 3000 door frames on site and a long term alternative to the perpetual and costly refurbishment of the timber frames was required. Having worked with Yeoman Shield on previous wall & door protection projects, we contacted them for a solution.”

After a survey carried out by a Yeoman Shield Area Sales Manager Steve Hawke, a bespoke product was decided upon.

Post formed Yeoman Shield angles, to the required dimensions, were fabricated from 2.0mm thick FalmouthEx material, for fitting to the existing timber door jambs.

Where necessary a timber infill piece was manufactured to fill any gaps between the frame and angle so providing extra support to the internal angle.

Supplied in Dusty Grey to complement the existing décor, the formed angle protectors were installed at 1250mm high

by Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives.

s part of their lifecycle programme, Engie in conjunction with Consort Healthcare and Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust engaged with Yeoman Shield to provide a solution to the continual damage being caused to door frames throughout the Pinderfields Hospital.

Aluprof on Refurbishment Back in the late 1960’s, Architect Richard Rogers designed and completed ‘22 Parkside’ with his then wife Su Brumwell, he considers this residential project to be one of the best examples of his early work. He links it to a far more spectacular and famous building, the Pompidou centre in Paris, which he had just begun work on at the time with Renzo Piano. Four years ago, 22 Parkside was granted Grade II listing and is now widely regarded as one of Lord Rogers best examples of his early postmodern architecture.

Lord Rogers donated the building to the Harvard Graduate School of Design who appointed architect Philip Gumuchdjian and his practice to refurbish the property whilst maintaining the unique appearance of this iconic structure. One of projects’ features was its design as a kit of parts that could be quickly assembled on site, something that was quite radical at the time.

During the refurbishment, one of the main criteria was the replacement of all 36 wall panels. These were the original 2” thick aluminium faced ‘Alcoa’ wall panels, complete with a rigid Asbestolux lining and polyurethane insulated core. With the safe removal of the asbestos filled wall panels, the original aluminium framed doors, windows and ventilators were removed from the panels and refurbished.

With the assistance of Aluprof UK, new panels were designed around the company’s high-performance MB-59S system which were of 75 mm thickness and incorporated a rigid polyurethane insulation and fireboard covered with a 2mm powder coated aluminum skin to both sides. The new panels were designed to match the original Alcoa panels and consisted of a new jointing ‘zip’ gasket, again to match existing, extruded from EPDM. The original aluminium framed doors, windows and ventilators were then

refitted into the new panels with new EPDM gaskets.

The newly installed panels now have a U value of just 0.4 W/m2K. Aluprof are delighted to have been involved with the grade II listed project which typifies the companies flexible and bespoke approach to all construction projects, either new or of a complex refurbishment arrangement such as this.

Crown Paints masters university project Crown Paints has received top marks from a West Midlands-based university after transforming their Students’ Union café.

The Pear Tree Café, in the heart of the University of Worcester’s St John’s Campus, has been given a new lease of life with a vibrant new colour palette.

Contrasting greys and a teal colour have been used to refresh the space, which Joe Stock – Capital Projects Procurement Officer at the University of Worcester – says had become tired.

He said: “The old colours were quite dark so we wanted to give it a refresh and encourage more people to use the Students’ Union building during the day.

“We met Crown Paints at a ‘Find it in Worcester’ event and gave them the opportunity to develop a specification.

“Crown Paints worked alongside our Students’ Union representatives to choose a new colour scheme and it looks really good. We’re glad we’ve used Crown Paints on this project.”

A new care home in Scotland has used

suspended grid system from Armstrong Ceiling Solutions, that sub-contractors have found supremely quick to install, has been used on a building forming part of a council’s biggestever capital investment programme.

Designed for strength, but using 15% less steel, the CE-marked Drywall Grid System utilises Armstrong’s popular T-shaped grids and can easily incorporate service elements such as light fixtures, access panels and air diffusers or ventilation systems.

Some 3,500m2 of Armstrong’s DGS (Drywall Grid System) was specified for the new state-of-theart £13 million New Dumbarton Care Home designed by Cooper Cromar Architects for West Dumbarton Council in conjunction with hub West Scotland, its development partner.

At Dumbarton Care Home the standard system has been used throughout the 23,000m2 brick and block building on the site of the former Crosslet House alongside other Armstrong systems for exposed ceilings to give the project a complete wall to wall ceiling solution.

The DGS suspension system for plasterboard ceilings gives specifiers the option to use as a standalone, wall-to-wall, or in combination with Armstrong tiles and Axiom perimeter systems as a fully compatible solution. It is available in three versions – standard for typical flat installations, faceted for curved and domed ceilings of any radius, and Shortspan for smaller areas such as corridors.

It complements a total of more than 1,400m2 of Armstrong’s 600 x 600 Bioguard Plain board tiles with 24mm exposed grid to the back of house and staff areas and all toilets/changing areas as well as Armstrong’s 600 x 600 Optima Vector tiles with 24mm exposed grid to the high-level main entrance area, and Armstrong’s 1200 x 300 metal Bioguard Plain tiles with acoustic fleece to all corridor areas within DGS plasterboard margins.

The new care home comprises 84 residential bedrooms grouped in domestically-scaled seven-bedroom clusters. These are arranged in house groups to provide 56 groundfloor and 28 first-floor bedrooms. It also incorporates steel-framed day care facilities for 50 people, along with associated access, parking and communal/courtyard landscaping.

The Armstrong systems were installed by specialist sub-contractor Brian Hendry Interiors, a member of Armstrong’s Green Omega network of sustainably-certified installers, for main contractor Morgan Sindall.

Managing director Brian Hendry said: “Armstrong’s DGS is without a doubt a good product and compared to a traditional MF system the installation time is reduced, with basically one of the MF installation elements removed completely.”

He explained that other MF (Metal Framework) systems involve hangers, a primary channel and a support section beneath which

“As well as a shorter installation time than other systems the grid is easily altered to accommodate any services requirements and if Armstrong LayIn ceilings were also a part of the installation, Armstrong could warranty the full project. It also makes for easier pre-fab style make-up of window bulkhead details.”

Project architect Kevin Fitzpatrick said: “The contractor and their subcontractor proposed the Armstrong system as we wanted to maintain a clean, seamless transition between the necessary grid/panel suspended ceilings and the more domestic MF ceiling finishes.

“So they help to maintain a domestic aesthetic but also provide ease of access in highly serviced ceiling zones.

We are very happy with how the Armstrong system has allowed the mix of finishes to work well together and transition from one to another.”

The project presented many special requirements for Cooper Cromar.

Kevin Fitzpatrick added: “The design was led in conjunction with the client, West Dumbartonshire Council, who set out from the beginning a desire for ‘less clinical’, more ‘domestic’ and ‘dementia friendly’, in particular for the residential portion – the houses, bedrooms and common rooms.

“We had to coordinate the architecture and interior design to maintain high levels of dementia-friendly design and meet the stringent statutory Building Control requirements in terms of fire safety and escape. And the client’s requirements for high levels of acoustic performance, controlling the sound between rooms, was beyond what was expected by Building Control.”

Brian Hendry added: “I have worked with Armstrong over the past 18 years and found them to offer an excellent product, whilst at the same time offering good value for money with a very professional and reliable service.”

“We receive a lot of support through our suppliers, however the Armstrong technical team are on call for anything more complex. With this project in mind, Martin [Dalby, Armstrong’s DGS specialist in the north] was in direct contact with our site supervisor and attended the site on numerous occasions throughout the duration of the project.”

Morgan Sindall’s Craig Guthrie, general foreman, construction Scotland, said: “We benefitted from the grid going up faster than other systems.

Also, it does not get damaged as easily and can be easily repaired.”

n many circumstances a building can be filled with smoke without significant heat or even fire. The Government’s hard hitting video, “don’t drown in toxic smoke”, graphically describes how lethal the smoke can be; ‘Just three breathes of toxic smoke and you are unconscious. Your lungs fill up, just like drowning!’

Unfortunately we have all seen very recently how smokelogging can impede both escape and rescue, with tragic consequences. Fire incidents are on the increase in the UK and the behaviour of modern day fires has changed dramatically as building contents are manufactured from synthetic rather than natural materials. In some cases water sprinklers may be a solution for controlling the ‘fire’, but they aren’t activated until the ceiling height reaches a minimum of 58°C, at which point the bi-products in the smoke produced by these fire loads will have seriously jeopardised the occupants’ chances of survival.

Welsh Slate is music to a city’s ears A former musical warehouse which had to be rebuilt brick by brick to make way for a city link road has been topped with Welsh Slate.

Rose House, on the corner of Lincoln High Street and Tentercroft Street, had to be moved 20 feet back within a Conservation Area to allow for the width of the new £22 million east west link road as part of the city centre’s regeneration.

Main contractor Balfour Beatty was tasked by English Heritage with taking down the building, most recently the well-known Gadsby’s shop, brick by brick and rebuilding it, as four ground-floor retail units and 11 apartments on the three upper floors, with existing materials where possible.

But the Welsh slates, which had been on the roof since the former Rose Musical Warehouse was built in the 1860s, were replaced like-for-like with 650m2 of the manufacturer’s Cwt Y Bugail slates from its Blaenau Ffestiniog quarry in North Wales.

A team of up to six roofers from sub-contractor Bracknell Roofing installed the Welsh slates on new, open rafters over 12 weeks. The slate roofing work also included gables pointed with a slate undercloak and anchor points for solar panels.

Regional contracts director Ian Bladon who visited the site on a weekly basis said: “Because the property could be viewed from the cathedral we had to use like-for-like, in this case Welsh Slate.

“It was a pretty straightforward contract for us. We didn’t have any issues with the Welsh Slate and any challenges on site we met through experience. The main contractor was very cooperative.”

In addition to the work with Welsh Slate, part of the Lagan group,

Bracknell had a fibreglass barrel roof, flat roof areas, leadwork canopies, chimneys and Velux windows to contend with.

Ian added: “We were able to provide a high level of technical support on site throughout the project. We also ensured that material storage and sourcing was well planned to result in a completed project which was true to the original design and aesthetic of the building. Our use of materials on this project, including the Welsh Slate, shows the range of services and expert skills we have available to us.

We’re looking forward to working on heritage projects such as this in the future.”

The Rose Musical Warehouse was inherited by Edwin Samuel Rose, youngest son of founder William Rose. The business had stayed in the family for five generations until Jane Kinnear (nee Rose) and John Rose agreed to sell it to Lincolnshire County Council so the East West Link Road could go ahead with sections of dual carriageway

and wider junctions. The new road will connect High Street with Pelham Bridge and Canwick Road.

An archaeological dig carried out on the site uncovered evidence of Roman remains and until the beginning of the industrial revolution the land was used for agriculture. The coming of the railway led to an urbanisation of this part of the High Street and Tentercroft Street between the 1850s and 1860s.

David Sims, section engineer at Balfour Beatty, said: “We have worked with Bracknell Roofing before so we knew their heritage roofing expertise and ability to site manage would be a major help in the completion of this sensitive project.

In particular, the slate specified required a trusted partner to install it. We are really pleased to be able to deliver such a high standard result to English Heritage.”

Nick Greenwood, lead consultant at Mouchel, said: “I’ve been very impressed with the attention to detail and quality of the workmanship delivered on the heritage building as part of the East West Link Road.”

Welsh Slate completes a quadruple of schools in Scotland Some 53,000 Cwt-Y-Bugail slates feature on West Coats Primary School.

Welsh Slate has completed the fourth in a series of primary school modernisations for South Lanarkshire Council.

Some 53,000 dark blue grey slates from Welsh Slate’s Cwt-YBugail quarry in North Wales have been used to re-roof West Coats Primary School in a Conservation Area in Cambuslang.

“Welsh Slate was specified to meet Historic Scotland’s approval for a close match to the existing slate being replaced and many of the traditional buildings surrounding the school.”

The 16” x 8” slates and 16” x 12” county-grade slates-and-a-half from Welsh Slate, part of the Lagan Group, were installed by Forster Roofing Services as part of the £6 million refurbishment project for the council’s education services department.

“The company advised on the suitable type, size and thickness for the site’s location and to meet Historic Scotland’s approval.”

Welsh Slate has also been used on the new-build Lamington and Abington Primary Schools as well as Leadhills Primary School and Lanark Memorial Hall.

Architectural officer Thomas Tallan said: “This is a Grade B listed building so the external fabric refurbishment works had to meet Historic Scotland and planning consent.

The 1,600m2 roof area, including two mitred hip turrets, took 53,000 Welsh slates on lower and upperlevel pitches of 41˚, 49˚ and 65˚ double nailed with copper over a boarded roof on the external visible roof areas, some internal panels and a new turret.

Steve Scott, managing director for Forster’s, said: “Welsh Slate performed very well. It was quite a complex build that had to take account of a resident bat colony.”

He added: “This was a distinct project, as it is a historical building with special periodic features including a zinc witch’s hat detail on the tower block as well as lead chimney ducts, and required complete stripping and re-slating of the main roof to help the building comply with the new building regulations.

“Careful planning of the new slate positions was carried out in line with Listed Building planning requirements. During stripping we carefully salvaged as much of the existing slate as possible and reused it on the internal roof sections.

Bat boxes and an entrance in the existing roof space had to be created to provide a shelter for bats.”

The 18-classroom school was constructed of sandstone walls and eaves, with black cast iron gutters and downpipes.

Thomas, who found out about Welsh Slate from a client who had used it on several projects, added: “The Welsh Slate finish was well received and enhances the aesthetics of the area.”

The design derives from extensive research on plywood composite material systems, focused on the integration of doubly curved plywood forms and tensile cables.

The design is a development from an initial understanding of ‘tensegrity’ (or floating compression) systems and departs from a pure tensegrity through a three-dimensional structure, where doubly-curved plywood members coexist in equilibrium.

Chinese Bridge at Dumfries House, Scotland

Chinese Bridge at Dumfries House Recreates Original 1899 Design A bridge originally designed in 1899 but never built has finally been brought to fruition by CTS Bridges in time for a visit by Prince Charles who is the patron of Dumfries House, Cumnock.

Land Engineering came to CTS Bridges after securing the contract to provide an ornamental Chinese Footbridge over the Lugar Water at Dumfries House, Cumnock, Scotland.

They had a very short programme as the bridge had to be installed in time for a visit by Prince Charles who is the patron of Dumfries House.

CTS Director Sally Preston used her expertise to recreate a structure to modern standards whilst keeping the style of the original design. CTS Bridges undertook the fabrication modelling, manufacture, delivery and installation of the bespoke three span bridge.

The main central span was lifted onto the two stone piers using a 350t crane. The two side spans were then placed and site welded into position.

CTS utilised their Tekla 3D modelling system to detail the structure that incorporated two side spans of 12m each and an 18m central span that included steps at each side.

The design for the bridge was taken from an original drawing submitted by Scottish architect Robert Weir Schultz in 1899.

This original bridge was never built but now 118 years later, it has been realised thanks to funding from the Dunard Fund.

The decorative canopy was manufactured by Jonny Briggs Joinery under a separate contact and once in place, the Chinese Bridge was complete.
