Ravatherm XPS X ULTRA 300 SL specified for £50 million Mayfair development
August 2021
Ravago Building Solution’s ultra-thin high-performance extruded polystyrene (XPS) thermal insulation boards has been delivered to 22 Hanover Square, in Mayfair, London, as part of a £50 million project to deliver a new collection of luxury residences.
L
ed by global construction company ISG, the project is set to offer 80 new apartments as part of a multi-level development linked to the 5-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel, offering residents access to exclusive hotel facilities that include a spa, 25m indoor swimming pool, and a rooftop bar overlooking Mayfair. 1200m2 of Ravatherm XPS X ULTRA 300 SL was selected for by flat roof insulation specialists Quantum Insulation, keeping in mind that leading roofing company, BriggsAmasco, needed to attain a U-value of 0.12 – a requirement easily met by ULTRA 300 SL. Ravatherm XPS X ULTRA 300 SL is a thermal insulation product designed for inverted flat roofs, offering architects and specifiers the thinnest XPS insulation with a design lambda of 0.028 and declared lambda 0.027 W/mK for the whole thickness range from 70 to 205mm.
Paul Davies, Director, Quantum Insulation, said: “Ravatherm XPS X ULTRA 300 SL is the thinnest insulation of its kind, and so presented the ideal solution for this demanding specification. Alongside their product, Ravago offer high-level expertise and superb customer service, both of which were equally vital in getting the insulation from cradle to gate as smoothly as possible”. Tony Lawther, Operations Director, BriggsAmasco, said: “This project came with added logistical challenges, which Ravago were able to overcome with reassuring expertise, anticipating our needs and ensuring on-time Saturday delivery to a quiet site”. Richard Powell, Roofing Sales Manager, Ravago Building Solutions, added: “Having provided solutions for similar projects in the past, we were confident in meeting both technical and logistical requirements, ensuring the client received timely and safe delivery of the product. We look forward to seeing the final outcome of the development next year”.

How to: Specify the right fencing post for your project The expected rise in commercial and residential building projects in the UK means the fencing market is expected to grow substantially over the next few years. Timber fencing is a popular choice for many types of property, from residential developments and schools, to public spaces and light commercial sites. With so many options available, selecting the most appropriate type of fence post to work with timber fencing can be difficult and time consuming. A good starting point is to understand the three main material choices most widely used; concrete, timber and metal. This article will guide you through the pros and cons of all three cases to help you specify the best option for your site. First, consider these four essential areas before making your selection: the aesthetics of the project; the practical issues; the short and long- term costs; and, of course, with the drive to become a more eco-conscious industry, the sustainability of the fence posts. Below is an outline of each post type, which should help you make the correct decision for your fencing projects:
Concrete fence posts These are incredibly strong and will last for decades. However, concrete posts are heavy to carry and install (roughly 40kg), and are not always the most aesthetically pleasing. They can also diminish the impact of timber fence panels when paired. It’s also much harder to attach fence panels to these types of posts which can create issues such as rattling in strong winds, running the risk of premature damage to the panel. It also means they can be easily lifted to gain access to a property.
The long haul Concrete posts also provide very little flexibility and moving them at a later date is challenging. The material can also become cracked; a small issue initially, but this can soon become problematic if water gets in and freezes during winter months; widening the cracks and exposing the steel core, which can rust if exposed to the elements.
Unsustainable Perhaps the biggest issues with concrete posts is that they are an extremely destructive material environmentally. Concrete is reported to be responsible for 4-8% of the world’s CO2 emissions, so choosing this option could damage your green credentials.
That said, the market is currently awash with inferior timber posts with nowhere near the life span of a premium version. For those looking for longevity and quality, specifying high-quality timber posts will not only guarantee a longer shelf life but they’ll also reduce the number of times replacements or complete reinstallations are needed, providing a low lifetime cost.
Aesthetically pleasing Timber fence posts are undoubtedly the most attractive option and blend well in most environments, and with timber fence panels. Moreover, unlike concrete posts, slotted timber fence posts and timber panels go hand in hand, making the installation process seamless. The panels can be securely fixed to posts with screws to stop them from being lifted, and reducing any chance of rattling from wind movement. You’ll also want to consider the height of the overall fence. If it is over 2000mm (roughly 6.5 foot) then heavy-duty timber posts are most effective, as well as in areas of high wind, or where the fence is steeply stepped.
There’s no planet B The sustainability of timber posts will be dependent on their lifespan. At Jacksons, our timber posts are kiln-dried and pressure treated; with a guarantee of 25 years, and a close to zero carbon footprint. Shorter guarantees will mean the timber is not adequately protected from rot and insect attack, and therefore the impact of disposing of timber and producing more can result in further, avoidable emissions for the environment.
Cost-wise, pressure treated timber fence posts are around £32.70 +VAT for 2.7m high, so are competitively priced when considering concrete options.
Metal fence posts There may be some who remain wary of using timber posts, as a result of using cheaper, inferior fencing options that have failed after only a few years of use. For those unsure of timber posts, there is the possibility to pair metal posts with timber fence panels for a robust compromise. With our new Mi-T metal posts, only a small strip of steel is visible from the back of the fence, and the T-shape provides a seamless finish from the front. Metal posts should be made from galvanised steel and if painted, should be powder-coated for durability and protection against rust and corrosion. On a practical level, our metal posts are great to work with. They have predrilled holes, can be securely attached to panel frames with screws, and they’re lightweight, making installation easy on site. Our metal posts have a 25 year guarantee, and they are also 100% recyclable. So, after serving their time supporting fence panels, they can be melted down and reused, in keeping with the circular economy aspirations of the construction industry. Although metal posts require a greater upfront cost than concrete and timber fence posts, the long-term costeffectiveness is well worth considering. As an illustration of cost, a Mi-T post including 12 screws is currently £47.24 +VAT.
Timber fence posts
A final word of advice is to spend time assessing the key priorities of your fencing; strength, durability, aesthetics, cost, and sustainability, as each project will be unique. This will help you make a thoroughly informed decision when it comes to specifying.
For years Jacksons Fencing has flown the flag for timber posts. Timber posts that have been kiln-dried and pressure

Aluprof Commits to a Long-term Environmental Strategy with New Corporate Branding by Wojciech Brozyna - MD of Aluprof UK
It seems wherever we are today we are reminded that we are a generation that has to curb our carbon emissions in order to save the Planet for future generations. The fact that we have already increased the average temperature on Earth by approximately 1ºC above pre-industrial levels and that it is on course to increase more rapidly and reach a total of 1.5ºC to 2.0ºC by 20501. Buildings and construction account for more than 35% of global final energy use and nearly 40% of energyrelated CO2 emissions2. Clearly, with facts like these the Construction Industry is a prime target for carbon reduction, but the full picture is a little more complex. First, we often have the building deconstruction phase, using energy, whilst hopefully recycling as much material as possible. We then start the ‘build phase’ where all materials supplied to a project site carry some form of embodied carbon, followed by the construction phase which adds even more carbon into the materials used. Once in use, we have a building that may use further carbon fuels during its lifetime, unless it is designed to be carbon neutral in use. Whilst the build phase uses energy, which contributes to its carbon impact, this can pale into insignificance when we consider the building ‘use’ phase, as if the insulation is poor, vast amounts of energy can be wasted. It is therefore crucial to design with the very best, modern products, that help conserve energy. Clearly, buildings must be designed in future to last a very long time which further reduces the construction carbon impact, likewise, products that offer very high levels of insulation and sustainability, help keep the interior environment at a comfortable level and offer a lifetime of use.

RAD Building Nottingham University - Rated BREEAM Excellent and Passivhaus certified
Aluminium fenestration has long been associated with extensive life expectancy and can offer reduced maintenance whilst maintaining operational efficiency
August 2021 with high thermal efficiency. Perhaps the ‘golden egg’ would be to construct a building to be carbon positive in use, where it can actually save more carbon in its lifetime as it ‘costs’ in carbon to build? Aluprof, part of the Kęty Group, are working with environmental experts across the construction sector who are in turn continuing to push the boundaries of what is achievable for all our customers. To this end Aluprof UK have now joint the Passivhaus UK Trust as a Patron Member. To further enhance aluminium’s enduring life expectancy, Aluprof are licensed applicators to the global QUALICOAT standard for architectural powder coating and can offer various substantial aluminium pretreatments and more durable classes of powder coating to meet any specification. Aluprof are also license holders of QUALANOD, a further global standard for the provision of high-quality anodising. Together these finishes can easily extend the life expectancy of Aluprof’s products for future generations. Aluprof, who are a Polish based aluminium systems company, have had a base in the UK now for fifteen years, supplying a wide range of high-performance systems, products which have seen the company become one of the leading systems suppliers in the UK. In a recent statement from the Polish head office, Aluprof has made a clear commitment to further reducing its environmental impact: “As part of its newly announced strategy, Aluprof will be continuing with its work on promoting the concept of sustainable development. Environmental and social objectives stand out amidst the company’s’ many commitments, which include obtaining further Cradle to Cradle™ certifications and the ongoing improvement of its manufacturing processes under the ISO 14001 environmental management system. The company is introducing a range of initiatives aimed at eliminating the impact of its operations on the environment. It has updated its detailed analysis of its products’ carbon footprint and presented its commitments in terms of sustainable development. One of its many environmental ambitions is to move towards achieving climate neutrality.” One key to this goal is the company’s use of low-carbon aluminium. Aluprof ’s modern extrusion plant uses low-carbon billet which equates to just 2.79 tCO2e 3 . In comparison, the average production of one ton of aluminium primary aluminium somewhere in the world has an emission of 16.7 tCO2e, almost six times higher. The low level of carbon emissions is achieved thanks to the efficiency of the company’s new, cutting-edge plant for manufacturing, the use of low-carbon aluminium and the use of up to 65% of recycled aluminium content in Aluprof’s extrusion billet. To further reduce carbon emissions in the distribution of aluminium systems and products, Aluprof have developed a logistics network across Europe which reduces the need to stock materials locally. The traditional approach for UK distribution of European systems would be to have product delivered to a central warehouse, then to be sent
out to customers on a ‘local’ delivery. Whilst this approach may be efficient for supplying small batches of materials too many customers, Aluprof systems are sent in bulk to UK & Ireland facade companies direct from Poland. Using modern 44 tonne gross weight delivery vehicles and trailer combinations, system and fabricated product can be shipped and delivered direct to customers, currently up to two times a week. This approach means that double handling is not required in fact offers quicker deliveries than utilising a central warehouse. Removing the central warehouse also saves further carbon costs in double handling, heating and equipment requirements. The delivery logistics are carefully monitored to ensure that routes are the most efficient and are undertaken at times to minimise traffic congestion further reducing vehicle emissions. Social responsibility is something Aluprof have taken very seriously for some time and with the continued low turnover of employees in Poland and the UK the company continues to review its support of its workforce. The change in emphasis is seen as a move away from the importance of product to that of the role in society that the company can play. Taking such a route the company sees that product development and product quality are assured now and for future generations. Aluprof well recognises the need for social responsibility, as Bożena Ryszka, Marketing and PR Director for ALUPROF explains: “We understand the concept of a company’s sustainable development as working for environmental protection, the safety and development of the staff, responsibility along the supply chain and involvement in the development of the local community. At ALUPROF, we carry out those kinds of initiatives through the foundation run by the Kęty Group. It’s a pivotal part of our strategy. Our ambition is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and to have reduced our carbon footprint by fifteen per cent by 2025.” To reflect these new and ambitious targets, Aluprof have unveiled new branding with a bold new logo to reflect their next, socially responsible, growth within the aluminium fenestration market with a new motto to “build a better future together” Since setting up the Aluprof Office at the Business Design Centre in London, the company has rapidly grown their specification influence in the UK with their high performance architectural aluminium systems. Further expansion of the company’s headquarters in Altrincham now provides specifiers with meeting facilities and an extensive showroom of commercial systems to view. With overseas growth across Europe spreading into the Middle East and firm roots already in the East of the USA, the company is becoming a global player in facade supply. Further information is available on the company’s website at aluprof.co.uk or direct from their UK head office in Altrincham on 0161 941 4005 or contact the London specification office on 0207 288 6413.

A unique toilet pump solution for convoluted discharge pipe runs. In the ever-growing market of extensions, additional cloakrooms and garden offices, drainage for the facilities can sometimes present a real problem! When the desired toilet discharge pipe run exceeds the specif ied pumping parameters of a “basic” back of toilet macerator, pumping long horizontal distances straight from the back of the toilet, a double lift (horizontally, then vertical, horizontal again and then vertical again), or even up a slope, there is now a solution. The unique, German engineered, FlushMaster toilet waste pumping unit from Pump Technolog y Ltd. will handle all of these situations with ease. The powerful motor with its freeflow vortex impeller pump is designed to generate the high pumping head and flow needed to overcome these convoluted pipe runs. It can reliably discharge waste from a toilet, bidet, washbasin or shower where others can’t. Additionally, it features deliberately large clearances between the pump inlet and tank floor, making it considerably more tolerant of user abuse.
16
August 2021
In the event of a problem the FlushMaster features some simple solutions. There is an integral acoustic alarm with the option of voltfree contacts for coupling with a remote alarm or BMS to indicate that some maintenance is required. Then, to unclog the vortex impeller, simply insert a screw driver into the top of the motor/pump shaft (to do this it is not even necessary to remove the cover) and reverse its direction. The clogged item will probably drop free! For more stubborn blockages, simply remove two screws, twist and lift the complete motor/pump assembly away, leaving the tank connected to the toilet. Any foreign objects can be clearly seen and removed. The FlushMaster is supplied with all fittings and instructions for direct mounting behind the toilet. However, it can also be positioned behind a partition wall.

Osmo Profile Piece Steve Grimwood, Managing Director of Osmo UK, provides an insight into Osmo UK and the high-quality wood finishes that it offers for both internal and external applications. TopOil is a water-repellent and resistant finish makes it an ideal choice for the kitchen and bathrooms where water damage and spillages are inevitable. It accentuates the wood’s natural beauty and leaves a flawless waterrepellent and resistant finish. It is almost odourless, contains no biocides or preservatives and will not crack, flake, peel or blister. Available in seven different shades, the finish achieved with TopOil ensures the worktop is impervious to a wide range of liquids, such as wine, beer and cola. TopOil is food safe (EN 1186) and suitable for use on children’s toys (EN 71.3). Founded in 1990, Osmo UK today exclusively handles the sales, service, support and distribution of Osmo’s premium quality wood finishes and flooring solutions to the UK market. Osmo products combine performance and natural, environmentally friendly ingredients. The company operates a policy of only supplying products that are eco-friendly during production and in application. Wooden is a beautiful feature of the home, but it is important to understand that as an organic matter, it will continue to need nourishment to ensure it stays in the best possible condition, both aesthetically and structurally. My best advice to contractors, builders and developers is to make use of a high-quality finish, full of natural ingredients to complement the woods properties. This will ensure that the wood continues to breathe and respond well to environmental conditions, removing any possibility of cracking or and blistering.

INTERIOR Ultimate Protection • Suitable for solid, engineered or laminate floors and furniture Polyx-Oil is a premium wood finish guaranteed to keep wooden surfaces in top condition. Offering all the professional features of a traditional oil-based finish, Polyx®Oil combines the smooth surface of conventional lacquers, and the ease of application of a water-based finish, while managing to eliminate the inherent disadvantages of these other types of finish. Available in a glossy, satin, semi-matt and matt finishes, the Polyx-Oil range offers the highest coverage of any oil on the market - a 2.5 litre can cover approximately 30m² with two coats. The range also features PolyxOil Tints, Polyx-Oil Raw, Polyx-Oil Rapid, Polyx-Oil Anti-Slip and PolyxOil 2K. Pristine Worktops • Suitable for wooden worktops and general internal joinery
Door Protection • Suitable for internal doors and joinery Designed specifically to protect and preserve internal veneer doors, Door-Oil is easy to use and provides a high-quality, tough and durable finish. Door-Oil is the perfect solution for any modern home, as it will provide utmost protection against common household spillages and stains. After application, the wood’s true beauty is enhanced, with the wood’s grain and natural characteristics providing a warm and rich effect to ensure that any interior room looks luxurious and elegant. Available in 14 different colours and designed to be used across a wide

range of wood surfaces, there is no reason for inconsistency of colour on the surface. Woodfiller can even be mixed within the range to achieve a custom colour. Cleaning and Maintenance • Suitable for wooden flooring, furniture, doors, walls and ceiling panelling. This is a highly effective process for ensuring the floor stays in a good condition and is a quick and easy method that is great for spills which need to be attended to immediately. All that is needed for this approach is a cleaning and maintenance concentrate, which is water-soluble such as Osmo Wash and Care. This will not only clean, but also freshen the surface at the same time. It is particularly effective in the removal of minor spillages such as fruit juices, milk, cola, beer, wine, coffee and other day to day marks and stains. EXTERIOR Safer Decking • Suitable for Decking It is important to consider the safety element when wooden decking has been installed in the garden. Anti-Slip Decking Oil will provide a safe outside environment all year round by increasing the durability of the surface, protecting it against mould, algae and fungal attack, and reducing the risk of slipping. The decking oil will penetrate deeply into the wood pores and fibres, providing a longlasting level of protection from within the wood.
Sun Protection for Wood • Suitable for cladding, summer houses, fences, windows, doors and furniture UV-Protection-Oil is essential for exterior wood as it provides 12 times the UV protection in comparison to untreated wood. Designed to protect, maintain and restore all types of wood from the effects of the environment, it not only protects the wood surface, but also enhances the natural look of the wood and will prevent damage. It is moisture regulating and reduces swelling and shrinking of the wood. This product overcomes the need for a heavy stain or a flaking varnish to keep them looking natural. It’s Only Natural • Suitable for cladding, summer houses, fences, doors, windows, carports and decking Natural Oil Woodstain provides a decorative and protective finish for all exterior wood. It offers a highquality finish which allows the wood to breathe and reduces the risk of swelling and shrinkage. Acting as a protection against all weather conditions, it prevents mould, algae and fungal decay as well ensuring the wood doesn’t crack, flake, peel or blister. Osmo also offer an ‘effect’ range to provide attractive silvermetallic tones. Meeting modern architectural demands, these finishes are designed to give the natural greying effect, added silver metallic pigments.
Pop of Colour • Suitable for cladding, balconies, windows, fences, pergolas, garden furniture and summer houses Available in 19 shades, Country Colour promises premium durability and a rich colour, hiding the natural colour and grain of the wood yet maintaining the wood’s natural texture. The solution not only rejuvenates the wood, but leaves it protected against the unpredictable British weather. It can be applied to a range of wood species, including oily and exotic materials. Requiring only two coats, it can be applied using a roller or brush and has an approximate drying time of 8 – 10 hours. Cleaning and Maintenance • Suitable for all external wood Wood Reviver Power Gel will refresh and clean greyed wooden surfaces. Restoring the natural texture and appearance of the wood, it is an ideal product for garden furniture, decking and cladding. A wood reviver will remove the loose greying layer, dirt and stains. Free from odour and biodegradable, the product compliments the woods natural properties. Stella Rooflight helps turn old car showroom into new show home Stella Rooflight has supplied 12 bespoke conservation rooflights for a stunning conversion project in the seaside town of Lytham St Annes in Lancashire.
30
The project to convert a Late Edwardian purpose-built garage and car showroom into a stunning 21st Century modern home was the dream of architect and homeowner Sean Kember. The property was first designed and constructed in 1909 by local architect Thomas Hedges, for the Williams Brothers. The building remained a car showroom for over 100 years and to this day the building remains somewhat of an icon in the local area.
while undertaking the much needed renovation works, which would breathe new life into the building and transform it into their new dream seaside home.
Conscious of the building’s local history and importance the new owners were careful to preserve the original fabric of the building,
Stella Rooflight were commissioned to produce a total of 12 bespoke conservation rooflights to fit the new openings. 10 smaller rooflights, which comprised of 6 opening and 4 fixed frames, were designed to fit internal rafters of 690mm x 940mm and 550mm x 740mm. A much larger non opening rooflight which was sized at 3000mm wide x 3500mm high was designed as a grand centre piece in the roof. This rooflight was supplied in two sections which were purpose designed to sit one on top of the
A large part of the renovation and conversion works included the complete rebuilding of the old steel structured roof with new timbers and the installation of large conservation rooflights, which would flood the large open internal space with natural daylight.
other, with each section being divided into three panes. All 12 rooflights were manufactured using marine grade stainless steel and finished in a high quality C5 marine grade black powder coating. An important consideration given the building’s coastal location and the propensity to rust associated with mild carbon steel rooflights. The Stella rooflights also included a high specification glazing with BioClean Self-Clean, Solar Control outer pane with a warm edge spacer filled with Argon Gas. The internal glass panel used Planitherm Comfort Plus to provide the perfect balance of light, warmth and comfort. The rooflight was finished internally with a stunning American Ash interior liner. Due to the size of the larger rooflights, a specialist crane was required to lift the rooflights from the delivery vehicle, over the building and directly into place. The installation required careful

planning, which was overseen by local specialist roofing contractor Ben Valentine-Lynden from Blackpool Industrial Roofing.
Ben said: “Throughout the process we dealt directly with Paul at Stella. He was incredibly helpful throughout, advising us on the whole installation from the crane lift to weather proofing the roof lights. Paul was also happy to schedule the arrival of the rooflights to suit us and the weather, on arrival the units were packaged excellently and made for an easy transition from wagon to roof. “Overall I think these are a great product, easy enough to install and the finished look is fantastic. Would definitely recommend and would use again.”
Sean Kember, Client and Director of Gilling Dod Architects, said: “Stella’s technical team worked closely with us throughout the process and were a great help in making sure that everything ran smoothly.W “As you would expect we did a great deal of research before deciding to run with Stella Rooflights, and from your initial assistance with the specification through to the installation on site, you have been great to work with.” “I would also like to say that the quality of the rooflights is excellent! Thank you.” For further information on Stella conservation rooflights contact Paul Trace on 01794 745445, email info@stellarooflight.co.uk or visit www.stellarooflight.co.uk For further information about Gilling Dod Architects visit www.gillingdod.com

Knauf helps Euros match keep on track When the Allianz Arena was built in 2005, a great deal of emphasis was placed on safety. So, when a small fire broke out in a technical room shortly before the German national team hosted France in Euro 2020, everything was taken under control very swiftly. The use of Knauf Fireboard throughout the stadium had an important role to play in the control of the fire, allowing the match to continue as scheduled. Knauf Fireboard is a fleecelined glass reinforced gypsum plasterboard available in a wide range of thicknesses to provide up to four hours of fire protection in structural steel encasement.
34
The Allianz Arena is the footballing home of two of Germany’s most
historic clubs, FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich. With a capacity of 70,000 for international matches, quickly dealing with any health and safety issues, such as a fire, is of utmost importance. Due to their exceptional performance qualities and aesthetics, the entire Allianz Arena is equipped exclusively with Knauf systems. A total of around 230,000 m2 of gypsum panels and 30,000 m2 of AQUAPANEL® Outdoor were used on the project. The smooth outer facade is designed as a diamond-shaped, translucent envelope consisting of 2,800 inflatable plastic cushions
with integrated lighting. The Allianz Arena has lost none of its appeal 15 years on from its opening for the World Cup in 2006. Furthermore, the safety of all those who visit or work at the Arena has been shown to have been an important consideration throughout the design and construction process. Wieland makes a quick connection at Project Hana
Wieland Electric has supplied its popular Metalynx2 modular wiring system and a variety of the company’s GST products for Project Hana, a two floor CAT B fit out commercial property at St Martin’s Court in the City of London in a prime location next to St Pauls Cathedral.
T
he Wieland products were specified and installed by Phoenix ME Ltd with the Metalynx2 system used to feed the lighting control modules and fan coil units throughout the building whilst the GST system was used in all prefabricated modular areas to provide a connection for linear light fittings. Hana, a subsidiary of CBRE Group, offers a full range of flexible working solutions and St Martin’s Court is the company’s third facility, comprising over 100,000 sq ft of private offices, on-demand meeting rooms and sophisticated co-working spaces that are available by the hour, day, or week. The Hana facility will initially be fully occupied by approximately 500 CBRE employees who will operate from the space while the company’s existing UK headquarters at Henrietta House in the West End is undergoing redevelopment work. Hana at St Martin’s Court’s amenity-rich, premium shared space will become available to other occupants in early 2021. Thanks to its innovative design, Metalynx2 uses a minimum number of components, all of which lock together for secure installation and in full compliance with all relevant standards, representing a smarter generation of structured wiring that delivers even greater savings on costs and installation time. It is ideal for power distribution, lighting control (including DALI and KNX) and fan coil units and, with the ability to customise Metalynx2 components for special projects, it offers infinite design flexibility. As Project Hana was a fast pace refurbishment, it was paramount that all systems and components would arrive on site in the agreed timescale. Wieland designed, plotted and fabricated all requirements off site which when delivered, allowed for easy installation by Phoenix to ensure connection simply from the home run being installed back to the distribution board and the final runs to the lighting control modules and fan coil units. As all connections and end runs have a plug and play based system, this also allowed for second fix connections to be completed quickly and effortlessly. Metalynx2 provides any scheme with complete flexibility so should a design need to be changed at time of fitting or in the future, the system can be modified quickly with minimum downtime. With Wieland’s prompt delivery service this also assisted other contractors working on Project Hana as this ensured no time was wasted waiting for product on-site and allowed for final connection in line with the programme of works. Wieland also provided on-site project management and technical support.

Bond It Pro Range In today’s world we hear more and more about hybrids being the preferred choice, whether its cars with both electric and combustion engines, communication devices where a phone combines a computer and camera, or even dogs, where a Labradoodle once commonly viewed as a mongrel now is a household favourite. The science of fusing things together has resulted in more superior and efficient end products being readily available, with proven advantages for the user.
36
In the construction industry, a hybrid is understood to mean the product of two or more chemicals or materials that have been fused together, resulting in a new improved product that offers the combined positive properties of the original items.
alternatives to traditional based products, but also better products in terms of performance. Under the Pro Range Bond It offer hybrid solutions to a wide variety of trade and DIY needs that provide the best of both worlds.
Bond It has capitalised on the benefits of hybrid “crossbreeding” of chemicals and have used its technical prowess to develop a range of high performance sealants and adhesives with truly outstanding performance characteristics. By making significant and sustained investments into the relevant research and manufacturing facilities, we are a leading force in the development of a new generation of hybrid products for many building sectors.
As the term ‘hybrid’ suggests, these products combine the benefits of silicone and polyurethane sealants with none of either material’s associated drawbacks. Hybrids are free from solvents, isocyanates and silicones and are therefore non-hazardous and non-damaging to health. They have very low odour making them ideal for sensitive indoor applications, as well as being quick curing, non-shrinking, UV resistant, can be used without primers, and have exceptionally good adhesion to almost any construction material. An added benefit is they will adhere to damp surfaces and can even be applied under water. And replicating the properties of a polyurethane, the hybrids have good temperature fluctuation resistance and are tear resistant and over paintable, even with water based paints. Basically they pack a punch, and some . . .
Sealants tend to be manufactured using one of two base materials – silicone or polyurethane. Both materials have their advantages but similarly both also have their disadvantages. By developing hybrid technology the positive characteristics of both chemical materials are united, providing not only greener
August 2021
Under the PRO RANGE banner Bond It offer 6 tailor made products. Each product features a different formulation which has been specifically designed to deliver enhanced performance characteristics that are ideally suited to different applications.
MIRROR PRO, as the name suggests was specifically formulated for use on mirrors, glass and ceramics as well as for hot, humid environments. Will stick to damp surfaces and is non-corrosive so will not attack mirror backings. Rapid curing and is tack free in 10 minutes.
GRIPBOND PRO was the Company’s pioneer hybrid, an ‘all-in-one’ product that can be used as a sealant and an adhesive. Available in 4 colours, including crystal clear for an invisible seal, it has become an immensely popular choice thanks to its versatility, bond strength and speed of curing.
With hybrid products, new applications can be replicated on building sites and in many areas they can even be completely substituted. The launch of EasiSeal in 2018 was a revolutionary step forward in to the roofing sector. Offering a one coat application to flat roofs EasiSeal is a cold-applied, solvent-free, permanently flexible 100% waterproof membrane. Creating an impermeable seal to repel water damage it is also suitable for wet room tanking, groundwork tanking and waterproofing balconies and terraces.
GRIPBOND PRO MAX is the ultimate power adhesive in a cartridge. Offers up to four times the grab of other grab adhesive and can eliminate the need for additional mechanical support. Also delivers an excellent, longer lasting bond and remains permanently flexible ensuring movement will not compromise bond strength. WOOD PRO was designed for fixing all types of wooden floors directly onto all common substrates eliminating the need for battens. Moisture and solventfree composition reduces the risk of wood flooring warping, curling and deforming. WOOD PRO is also permanently flexible enabling it to compensate for subfloor movement and making it suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.
You may well have started reading this thinking why would I use hybrids but the question you should really be asking is why not as the advantages are clear??
ASTRO PRO is a specialist solution for bonding artificial grass surfaces to a variety of substrates or jointing tapes. Offers excellent bonding properties even on wet surfaces. Cures rapidly even at low temperatures and once cured is fully resistant to all climatic conditions.

Currently the biggest speculative office development underway in the city centre, ‘Endeavour’ forms the fourth and final phase at the acclaimed Sheffield Digital Campus (Sheffield DC). Representatives from the project team, alongside Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, Kate Josephs and Councillor, Paul Turpin, met on site to mark the official ground-breaking on Friday 11 June 2021. Yorkshire-based GMI Construction is contracted to deliver the impressive eight-storey Grade A office building, which offers highly-efficient floorplates of up to 10,323 sq ft. A private 3,584 sq ft roof terrace on the sixth floor overlooking the city’s transport interchange, the iconic Park Hill Flats and panorama beyond is also included.

Scheduled to be completed by the end of summer 2022, the fully funded development is the final of four visually impressive buildings on the Sheffield DC site. Electric Works, Ventana House and Acero have all been successfully let and subsequently sold to investors with high profile occupiers including Sky, Kennedy’s, Michael Page, Atkins and the flex-office workspace provider Spaces. The design of Endeavour has been modified to respond to trends in respect of the future use of workspaces, accelerated by thee pandemic making the office environment a safer place to work including reduced touch points, but also appreciating the increasing prevalence of agilehybrid working styles many businesses are adopting. The development, which has a GDV of £27m, will create up to 140 construction jobs and, once

complete, will accommodate up to 800 office workers. It is a major vote of confidence in Sheffield city centre, where the supply of existing and pipeline office space has diminished, leaving a major shortage of space to cater to existing and future demand. Adam Varley, Head of Commercial at SGI, said: “We are pleased to announce the start of speculative construction on site to deliver the final phase at Sheffield DC which brings nearly a quarter of million sq ft of prime business space to the city centre.” “GMI Construction is a trusted long-term partner on the project and, together with our design consultants CJCT Architects, they have helped us to evolve the building in line with the future of workspaces. “We are delighted to report that there is already strong interest from potential occupiers looking for a well-located, premium workspace with flexible, open plan floor plates in the city centre. The building’s impressive design really creates a sense of arrival, with a double height entrance reception and new social space allowing visitors and colleagues to interact.” Kate Josephs, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, said: “Easily accessible, high quality office space is absolutely central to attracting investment into our region and Endeavour offers great potential for coworking in the heart of Sheffield.” “As a council we are committed to delivering infrastructure, space and buildings that reaffirm our position as England’s fourth largest city and create an environment where we can thrive for years to come, and I believe that Endeavour will be a great asset to our city and complement the transformation of the city centre that is currently taking place.” Councillor Paul Turpin, Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Jobs and Skills at Sheffield City Council, said: “The next couple of years will be a vital time for new developments and regeneration as we begin our Covid-19 recovery and start to look towards the future of our city.” “I am pleased Endeavour will have an “excellent” BREEAM rating and is taking wellbeing into account using the WELL building standard. Wellbeing and sustainability must be the focus of new developments in Sheffield.
“Sheffield Digital Campus will play an important role in boosting the local economy and offering an attractive setting for colleagues to come together; whether you’re working in the office multiple days a week or just visiting for an important meeting.” “It’s essential that we have a variety of flexible spaces on offer in the city centre that best meet the needs of those using them - for some people that will be open plan hospitality venues such as Kommune, Cutlery Works, or a coffee at Marmadukes, and for others it will be purpose-built, dedicated office space such as Endeavour.” Lee Powell, Divisional Managing Director of GMI Construction Group, said: “It is fantastic to continue our work at Sheffield DC and start on site with Endeavour, the final phase of this impressive project.” “It is the last parcel of land on this prime site and so there are tight constraints on space for construction but our experience in delivering the other buildings on site allows us to apply value engineering to complete within the 71 weeks schedule.” Sheffield DC is part of a new office quarter in a super-prime location next to the city’s major transport hubs and in the centre of the development framework for new HS2 Midlands Station. SGI is one of the most active developers across the Northern Powerhouse, with over 3.2m sq ft of commercial/mixed-use space under development over 524 acres of land. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic the Group has maintained its ‘Keep Building’ ethos, continuing to deliver transformational schemes that breathe life back into the North’s former industrial heartlands to support the Government’s ‘Levelling-up’ agenda. Most recently, the Group secured funding from OakNorth Bank for a new 133,118 sq ft HQ office building at Thorpe Park Leeds as part of the next phase of development to deliver an additional 1.3 million sq ft of mixed-use accommodation including 300 new homes and a 113-acre public park. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is launching the crowdfunding initiative #BringPuppyToLife to raise funds to restore Puppy The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has presented the crowdfunding initiative #BringPuppyToLife to raise the funds needed to restore the inside of Jeff Koons’s floral sculpture Puppy, one of the most iconic works of art in the Museum and the city of Bilbao The Museum decided to launch its first crowdfunding campaign after an exhaustive technical analysis carried out by the experts in the Museum’s Conservation Department. They concluded that the work has to be treated preventatively to replace and refurbish the components of its internal structure and ensure its future conservation. The restoration of the steel “skeleton,” the watering system, and the different layers that secure the substrate which also feeds the plants, such as the metallic mesh and the geotextile fabric, will cost €100,000. The Museum has chosen to enlist the collaboration of society to ensure that this beloved and representative work. Puppy, will remain in great condition for the next 25 years. As a result, the Museum has included a special microsite Bring Puppy To Life (on its main website) in Basque, Spanish, English, and French, for anyone who wants to make a contribution and become a ‘sponsor’ of the colossal floral Puppy. The public can donate securely and easily online, choosing the easiest method for them— PayPal, Bizum, or credit card. And they can deduct their donation by filling out their information for the tax certificate.

This crowdfunding campaign will be active
from today until Fall. Restoration will take place in September, October, and November of 2021, dovetailing with the next change in Puppy’s flowers, when the recently-planted summer flowers will be replaced by winter plants. Puppy has been welcoming visitors to the Guggenheim Bilbao since the Museum opened in October 1997. This public sculpture more than 12 meters tall, which represents a giant West Highland terrier, is designed to attract, spark optimism, and instill confidence and security, in the words of its artist, Jeff Koons. Puppy is one of the most admired and photographed contemporary works of art, and in order for it to continue to keep its optimal appearance and health in the future, the time has come to give it a new lease on life.

Green trailblazers Galion Limited embrace the heating of the future Trailblazing sustainable housebuilder Galion Limited have become the latest firm to embrace the potential of Energy Carbon’s state-of-the-art Far-Infrared heating technology. Glastonbury-based Galion specialise in beautifully crafted, traditional new home developments designed to deliver bespoke, spacious and eco-friendly living spaces that encourage community cohesion. In their bid to make their homes as sustainable as possible, the company reached out to Energy Carbon, intrigued by what infrared heating had to offer. “When Galion approached us, we were immediately impressed with their outlook,” comments Energy Carbon director Nick Gander. “For some companies, ‘going green’ is just a box-ticking exercise. But Galion clearly don’t do sustainability by halves. Cost wasn’t an issue – they just wanted the best ecofriendly heating system they could find.” Galion’s properties will incorporate solar panels on the roofs, locally sourced natural stone, electric vehicle charging points and more. With Energy Carbon’s cuttingedge heating tech, they hope to push the envelope of sustainable construction even further.
In contrast with conventional heating technology, that works by warming the air, Energy Carbon’s innovative products work by harnessing the power of infrared. Heating the surfaces in a room rather than the empty space, they allow homeowners to switch it on and be feeling the benefits much more quickly than traditional heating – which means lower electricity bills as a result. An ongoing test house experiment run by Energy Carbon in Germany has found that this technology can reduce overall electricity use by as much as 26%. Capable of heating rooms up to 28.7 degrees Celsius while retaining safe, low surface temperatures of no more than 41 degrees, the products can be quickly and easily plastered into ceilings or inserted behind plasterboard, meaning they’re not only green, but builderfriendly too.
comments: “In many cases, it’s not the big major developers who make the first move when it comes to innovative new technologies. “We often find it’s the smaller, more agile companies that are willing to embrace new ideas - an approach that Galion perfectly encapsulates. They’ve already gone further on sustainability than many of the UK’s housebuilders, and we’re delighted to be working with them.” Give us a call on 0203 507 1659 or visit www.energycarbon.co.uk.

MPs form all-party mining and quarrying group Members of Parliament have formed a new All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Mining and Quarrying, supported by the Mineral Products Association (MPA). This new cross-party group will help to keep Members of the Commons and Lords up to date with issues affecting the industry which represents the biggest flow of materials in the economy. It will also allow the MPA to keep its members abreast of industry issues of interest to Parliamentarians. At the first virtual meeting of the newly-formed APPG, members elected Steve Double MP (St Austell and Newquay) as its chair, with other Members from different parties and from around the country elected as vicechairs including Jane Hunt MP (Loughborough), Robert Largan MP (High Peak), Kenny MacAskill MP (East Lothian), Jessica Morden MP (Newport) and Mark Pawsey MP (Rugby). After the election of officers, the group discussed the reforms proposed in the Government’s Planning White Paper ‘Planning
for the Future’ and its potential impact on the mineral planning system. MPs were told that the White Paper completely overlooked mineral planning, despite the fact that the Government’s ambitions for housing, green energy and infrastructure relied heavily on a steady and adequate supply of minerals and mineral products. Steve Double MP, chair of the APPG said: “The mining and quarrying sector is vital to our economy and it is important that we ensure a smooth flowing supply chain for the Government’s ambitious housing and infrastructure. I am pleased to have been elected chair of the APPG, which will ensure that parliamentary colleagues are informed about the challenges facing the sector and that it has a voice in Parliament.” Mark Russell, the MPA’s Executive Director for Planning & Mineral Resources, said: “It was good to see the All-Party Parliamentary
Group coming together to reflect on the mineral products industry’s essential contribution to society and the economy, and explore some of the challenges faced by our sector. The MPs in the group represent constituencies with quarries and other sites producing a wide variety of essential mineral products and being part of this APPG will enable them to gain a good understanding of issues such as mineral planning, biodiversity net gain and the industry’s drive towards net zero carbon. “As the Planning White Paper is taken forward as a bill through Parliament we will be looking very closely to see if our concerns are addressed. To achieve its ambitions in housing, green energy and infrastructure the Government needs to make the link to essential, domestically-produced mineral products to ensure the supplies required are made available.” www.mineralproducts.org

New peatland construction methods could unlock further housing developments in rural Scotland More environmentally friendly methods for laying housing foundations on peatland could pave the way for increased economic development in parts of the Highlands and Islands, while mitigating disruption to the natural ecosystem and captured carbon dioxide. A research consortium involving Edinburgh Napier University and Heriot-Watt University, with support from the Highland Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) and JAHAMA Highland Estates is assessing the feasibility of a range of construction methods to minimise disturbance to peat and mitigate the environmental impacts. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), NatureScot, ECOSystems Tech Ltd and the Scottish Government are also supporting the initiative. Peatland plays an important role in Scotland’s natural landscape and ecosystem, comprising of dead and decaying plant material with carbon captured in the remains. As much as 20% of Scottish land is covered in peat soil serving as a significant carbon store for more than 1.7 billion
46
tonnes of carbon - equivalent to 140 years’ worth of Scotland’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions. However, the soil is often unsuitable for building upon because of low strength, landslide risks and its tendency to deform under load. In parts of the Highlands and Islands, where peatland is commonly found, new housing is in short supply and some sites earmarked for housing development can be complicated by the presence of peat. Finding viable, sustainable methods for building on peatland that align with restoration work already underway, could transform Scotland’s approach to rural housing. Good quality, affordable homes could help to reverse population decline and promote economic growth in rural areas, encouraging a young and talented workforce to move to, and remain in, the Highlands and Islands.
Construction teams have previously relied on excavate-and-replace techniques, however, this project will explore a number of options that allow peat - and stored carbon - to be left in place, such as deep-soil-mixing, and piling. Timber piling would use tree trunks or long poles of timber to carry the foundations of a building. Disturbance of the peatland would be minimised, especially the presence groundwater, which is essential if peat is to continue to accumulate. The aim of the first phase of the project is to assess and compare the geotechnical suitability, environmental impact, logistics and cost implications of the different approaches. In a second phase, live field trials are planned to assess the suitability of proposed solutions. Councillor Trish Robertson, chair of the Council’s Economy and
Infrastructure Committee at Highland Council, said: “Highland Council is happy to support this research project as a way of exploring innovative ways of achieving our objectives of delivering more affordable housing and inclusive economic growth, while safeguarding better croft and other agricultural land, and reducing the carbon emissions presently caused by development on poorer agricultural land, which often contains significant peat deposits.”
industrial operations as it progresses towards carbon neutrality by 2030.
“I am hopeful that the results of the research can have a practical application for future developments and help us even better achieve our objectives.”
Scott Dingwall, head of regional development, Lochaber, Skye and Wester Ross, at Highlands and Islands Enterprise, said: “The availability of suitable affordable housing is a key factor in regional development across the Highlands and Islands. It is needed to attract and retain young people as well as inward investors looking to locate in the region. This innovative project has the potential to make it feasible to develop housing on areas where it previously would not have been considered. This could benefit rural economies and strengthen local communities, while protecting some of the region’s outstanding natural features. As such, it could be a key element in our shift towards a carbon neutral economy and achieving
Julia Stoddart, chief operating officer at Jahama Highland Estates, said: “Preserving and restoring peatland to keep carbon sequestered and enhance biodiversity is central to the land management work happening right now across JAHAMA Highland Estates. “With over 14,000ha of peatland on the estate, restoration work forms a significant part of our parent organisation GFG Alliance’s efforts to offset the carbon footprint of its
“As a large employer in the local area, GFG Alliance also recognises the importance of this research in addressing the long-standing issues concerning housing stock in the Highlands. We are committed to reconnecting people and place in Lochaber and Badenoch. Releasing constrained land for sustainable new housing would be transformative for our local communities.”
our net-zero targets. We are very pleased to be able to provide support and look forward to seeing the project progress.” Dr John McDougall, of Edinburgh Napier University, said: “Peatland has long posed a challenge to construction, the solution to which has commonly been an aggressive practice of removal. More recently, planners, environmental agencies and engineers have become increasingly aware of the very significant role of intact peat in the carbon cycle. In this context, it is exciting to be leading a re-evaluation of foundation options in the context of geotechnical, environmental and economic factors.” Andrew Nurse, project manager at CSIC, said: “In line with Scotland’s goals for net-zero, especially in the construction sector, we are looking at more sustainable options such as timber piles, as a solution for building on peatland - which could also make use of local, home-grown materials. Once we have reached conclusions from the feasibility study, the next stage will be to conduct a series of on-site trials at various locations in the Highlands and Islands.”
