Saws for the construction industry Being the only manufacturer of all three types of saw, hacksaws, bandsaws and circular saws, the German company KASTO offers the widest possible variety of options to its customers for small to large batch production. The UK subsidiary in Milton Keynes, KASTO Ltd, headed by managing director, Ernst Wagner, supplies all products into the British and Irish markets. They range from small pull-down saws for the job shop to highperformance manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic horizontal and vertical bandsaws for processing large beams, blocks and plates. A high degree of automation is possible, both on the input side of the saw, via automated stores, roller conveyors and buffer stations, and on the output side, with systems for cut piece and remnant handling, post processing (deburring, facing, centring, cleaning, marking) and sorting.

Double mitre cutting bandsaw Ideal for use in the construction industry is the KASTOmiwin twincolumn bandsaw for cutting metal stock to length and mitring between -45 and +60 degrees to a high degree of precision. The rigid, powerful saw is available in semi-automatic and automatic versions, U 4.6 and A 4.6 respectively. The latter model has a rack-and-pinion drive to feed material by up to three metres in a single stroke. Blade downfeed is electrically actuated via a ballscrew drive. Clamping range of the bandsaw is up to 460 mm, depending on material

profile. The smallest size that can be cut is 10 x 10 mm. For single straight cuts, the KASTOmiwin semi-automatic machine leaves a rest piece of 30 mm, increasing to 200 mm for the automatic model. The user can adjust the band speed steplessly between 12 and 150 m/min. Installation length required by the KASTOmiwin is 3,950 mm or 5,450 mm for the version with material infeed. Positioning the saw head at an angle reduces the width to 2,980 mm, ideal for transportation in a container.

Expanded range of pivot-bow bandsaws There are now three bandsaws in the KASTOmicut range of pivot-bow, metalcutting bandsaws, offering construction companies and firms in their supply chains more choice when preparing material. In addition to the original 2.6 model for cutting 260 mm diameter round and 310 x 260 mm flat stock, the larger KASTOmicut E 4.6 has the capacity to cut 335 mm diameter round and 460 x 335 mm flat material. It is designed for singlesided mitring at continuously adjustable angles from 0 to +60

degrees. Downfeed is hydraulically controlled and cutting speed can be continuously adjusted between 20 and 110 m/min. Users of the KASTOmicut U 4.6 version can saw flat material up to 520 mm wide and cut mitres from -45 to +60 degrees. Band speed range is even wider at from 12 to 150 m/min for processing an extensive range of different materials cost-effectively. A heavy, torsionally rigid, welded saw frame provides stable support for the blade and allows high band tension, ensuring a good quality cut even with hard-to-machine materials. Various accessories are available including a rotary table to support the material. For companies that mainly saw smaller workpieces up to 180 mm diameter, the compact KASTOmicut P 1.8 is the preferred choice, which is capable of mitring between 0 and +45 degrees. Downfeed rate is determined by manually guiding the saw frame and the blade is driven by a 1.5 kW three-phase motor, ensuring high quality cutting. Shortest cut length is 6 mm. As a large percentage of the parts used in the different bandsaw models is identical, KASTO is able to offer them at attractive prices.

LONGFLOOR dries at three times the speed of anhydrite/gypsum based flowing screeds. There is no laitance to sand off. Contamination and blistering issues with wet concrete or cement based floor adhesives are totally avoided.

Stockists are typically ready mixed concrete plants, mixer or dry leg. Delivery to customer can be from drum mix or volumetric trucks. LONGFLOOR liquid cement screed is discharged or more usually pumped in to the building, then simply dappled before applying LONGCURE, a sprayed proprietary curing agent.

This innovative product is not susceptible to cracking, crazing or curling and can be laid in wet areas. Applications include both domestic and commercial and provide good thermal conductivity over underfloor heating. It can be applied down to 25mm thickness in bays of up to 150m2. A single crew can lay 1000m2 in a day.

Imperial Bricks prove ideal for rural Cheshire developments Lockwood Homes is a dedicated residential development company specialising in bespoke family homes, primarily in the Cheshire area. Committed to the highest quality standards, owner Paul Lockwood uses Imperial Bricks for new-build houses and renovating and extending older homes. He has recently completed a small development of three executive homes in the Cheshire village of Holmes Chapel, selecting Imperial’s Reclamation Handmade metric bricks for the project.

Paul explained: “We selected them because they offer the perfect blend of traditional and contemporary style. Although it wasn’t a conservation area, the development was close to existing cottages, so the houses had to be built to blend sympathetically with the neighbouring properties. A New Method from Method Recycling How the New Zealand design company, Method Recycling, is challenging office waste behaviour with its ‘Open Plan Recycling’ philosophy. Recycling has become headline news once again as the European Parliament has voted for a complete ban on a range of singleuse plastics across the union in a bid to stop pollution of the oceans. Wolverhampton’s i9 Development Contract Goes to GRAHAM The development contract for Wolverhampton’s new modern office space, i9, has been secured by GRAHAM. The development will provide 50,000 sq ft of Grade A office space, designed by Glenn Howells Architects. “The appointment of GRAHAM offers the next step towards this much anticipated state of the art, Grade A office building for Wolverhampton. The i10 development has already proven that new occupiers are attracted to Wolverhampton and the state-of-the-art transport links of the Interchange will be a major attraction for those new occupiers,” said Steve Parry, managing director of Ion The scheme follows on from the success of the award-winning i10 complex on the opposite side of the road in the heart of the City of Wolverhampton Interchange. “Wolverhampton is undergoing a period of regeneration that is set to transform the city and attract further investment and jobs to the area. We are therefore pleased to have been appointed as the main contractor on the i9 – a significant new headquarters building that benefits from a prime location and highspec office facilities. Quintain gets injunction to bar Wembley crane climbers Wembley developer Quintain has taken out an injunction to stop people climbing its cranes. Teenage daredevil George Henry King-Thompson is named in the injunction secured at the High Court last month. The document bans anyone from climbing more than two metres above street level on any part of the Wembley Park construction sites.

Bid race for £100m Beckton DLR depot upgrade The hunt will start next month for contractors to deliver a £100m extension of the Docklands Light Railway Beckton Depot. Maintenance and stabling facilities are being extended to handle a new fleet of DLR trains. The works will be packaged into several contracts. Earliest work packages include a £5m design and build substation upgrade and £4m-£7m of Southern Sidings projects. This involves three new stabling sidings and seven new switches and crossings units. These are to be completed before the larger Northern Siding package worth £25m-£40m begins.

Northern Sidings works involve building a new carriage wash, extension and modification to existing track, and the creation and modification of new stabling sidings. The largest project worth up to £45m involves the design, and fit out of the new maintenance facility and track connections. This will be built adjacent to the Northern Sidings and is one of the final packages to be delivered. An official contract notice is due to be published on 18 February. The injunction is in force until December 2023. Quintain said: “Quintain Limited and associated companies have obtained a High Court injunction preventing unauthorised access into buildings and building sites at our Wembley Park development. “This follows a number of incidents where individuals placed themselves and others in danger. “The injunction was sought against one named individual and other unnamed individuals who may seek to trespass in future. “We take the safety of the public and our staff extremely seriously. “Individuals who engage in persistently disruptive and dangerous behaviour put themselves and others at risk of significant harm. “We will always act to prevent them from doing so.”

Surface Design Show 2019 Celebrating the best in new and innovative surfaces From 5-7 February Surface Design Show 2019 will take place at London’s Business Design Centre to provide a platform for architects, designers and specifiers to explore the best in interior and exterior surface materials, lighting design, development and innovation. Surface Design Show is the only event in the UK that focuses solely on interior and exterior surfaces. For more than ten years Surface Design Show has been the place where industry professionals immerse themselves in the latest materials for the built environment, gain new insights and network with likeminded designers, architects and suppliers. Since 2013 the Show has hosted the Surface Design Awards, now recognised as one of the most respected events in the design calendar. The 2019 Awards received 197 entries from 22 countries, including America, Italy, China and India. There are 13 awards that recognise exterior and interior surfaces for different sectors of design, including commercial, housing, light and surface, public building, retail, sustainable, and temporary structure.

The shortlist for this year’s Surface Design Awards, includes Zaha Hadid Architects, Studio Egret West and Chris Dyson Architects from the UK, Rockwell Group from the USA, and Kengo Kuma & Associates from Japan.

The shortlist consists of an impressive 43 projects across seven categories, each entry is an exemplary example of creative and innovative use of materials and lighting in both interior and exterior schemes. Some projects received nominations across several categories, resulting in 48 finalists. Awards Presentation will take place on the morning of Thursday 7 February, at Surface Design Show. Surface Design Show 2019 will once again have a packed programme of events all designed to inspire and engage. The Opening Night Live Debate from 6.30pm, Tuesday 5 February will be organised in association with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and New London Architecture (NLA). The ever popular PechaKucha Evening will once again be hosted by Phil Coffey of Coffey Architects, taking place on the Main Stage on 6 February from 6.30pm. Speakers include Nigel Ostime of Hawkins Brown; Soraya Khan of Theis and Khan Architects; Alex ScottWhitby of ScottWhitbyStudio; Stuart Piercy of Piercy and Co; Simon Fraser of Hopkins Architects; and Alison Brooks of Alison Brooks Architects. This year’s Media Partner will be Blueprint.

The CPD Hub is Surface Design Show’s forum for learning and professional development whereby manufacturers and industry organisations present a rolling programme of talks covering all aspects of the surfaces sector. From a background in antiques and restoration, Dominic Schuster Ltd has become the go-to name for gilded and antiqued mirror glass in residential and commercial sectors, at home and abroad. Our studio has recently located to Surrey which has enabled us to take on larger scale projects as well as more complex installations.

We work with some of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading architects, construction companies and designers on projects ranging from small one-off mirror designs to large scale installations in hotels,

restaurants and stately homes. We are also proud to be 100% UK based, with every product and design created by our studio here in Surrey. We do not have overseas factories or workshops, which enables us to keep our lead-times down to a minimum whilst also keeping a very close eye on the quality of our products.

to approve – not only did we have to create a finish to their specific requirement, we also had to ensure that the actual glass matched the exact remnant of a mirror that they had found in an antique frame. Because the iron content in glass varies from country to country, we had to source from different suppliers until we found the correct colour. The beauty and quality of our product sets us apart from our competitors but so does our customer service. As a large percentage of our work also involves seeing projects through from conception to completion, we work very closely with

the designers, architects and construction companies. The initial site visits involve in-depth discussions to determine the client’s exact requirements as well as taking technical details. Once the vision and scope has been determined we draw up a variety of options and layouts for approval by the client. We then commence work on the chosen product, with the client often coming to our workshop to assess progress. Only once the mirror and glass has passed our strict quality control, do we deliver it ourselves to site where we personally undertake the installation to ensure that the client’s expectations are fully met.

We have a loyal team of craftsmen who have worked with us for a number of years, assisting us in supplying and installing our glass and mirror in the UK and overseas. Amongst a number of other projects, last year we completed a highly complex ceiling installation in London, oversized arched mirrors for a roof terrace project in central London as well as bespoke verre églomisé designs for an apartment complex in Azerbaijan. Artistic Licence launches sunDial, a trailing edge mains LED dimmer

ighting controls specialist, Artistic Licence, is excited to be launching its much anticipated trailing edge mains dimmer, sunDial. The solution that many lighting professionals have been waiting for, sunDial achieves beautiful dimming for all common fixtures, including LED bulbs. The client was looking for a flexible design on the walls that would enable a bespoke feel and theme as people entered the conference hall. Alison Monteith, Managing Director of Monteith Scott, architectural interior design practice, was originally looking for a slim light box which would allow the hall to change the colour of the panel. She selected Pixalux LED light panels as they could be made to a bespoke size and the panels were only 16mm thick which meant that the wood and fabric panelling was much easier to integrate into the design. Derek Matthews, design director said, “Pixalux LED panels were extremely simply to specify and install and this certainly made the project less complicated. The foyer was designed with a neutral pallet of colours and by insetting a Pixalux panel with RGB colour changing facility it has enable the ICC to add a brand colour of an exhibitor or

set the colour to create a more welcoming environment to match the time of day. Monteith Scott have now refurbished 5 halls and the ICC has stated that reaction to Hall 11 is the best yet.” The Pixalux panels were installed by MLB Joinery. Luke Burrows, MD stated,” it was a pleasure to work with Pixalux UK. The design process started in April. We made many changes to the design and Geoff Fairfield of Pixalux helped us every step of the way. Once the final decision was made, we only had 10 days to complete the job. Pixalux pulled out all the stops to supply the panels with an incredibly fast turn-round. I must say Pixalux is fantastic especially as we have some complicated wiring requirements. The client wanted to control all the panels in the room from one point which meant we ended up with 5 metres of cable to the power supply. Our electricians were delighted when everything arrived as discussed. It

all worked perfectly without any headaches or dramas which can often happen with other products”. Pixalux is a totally unique product, as the LED panels are structural with a totally even spread of light, making them extremely easy to work with. In this project the panels have been supplied singlesided which has increased the brightness of the light. The panels have built-in diffusers and what clients love is that you cannot see any dots of light from the LEDs. Aluminium unitised systems, once the preserve of high rise construction, is becoming commonplace as systems companies make these systems more affordable for low rise and smaller constructions. Being different from ‘modularisation’, discussed in our previous editorial, unitised construction is primarily about the facade construction. It is well known that cement creates a great deal of CO2 in its production which is well known to be harmful to our environment. In some parts of the world the rush to use concrete in construction is stripping large areas of riverbeds of sharp sand which contributes to further ground erosion. It would therefore seem to be beneficial to build a basic structure and simply clad it with a suitable facade to protect the occupants from the elements. The view could then be taken to replace the facades at some future date and utilise the existing core construction, again thereby reducing our CO2 footprint significantly. Any facade can be made up of many materials, common material make up today can include aluminium glazed frames, terracotta profiles, stone and brick slips, to name a few. These high performance facades can be constructed complete with high levels of insulation, sound attenuation and excellent weathering characteristics.

Constructing these on-site, normally with a ‘ground up’ construction, can be time consuming and form a large part of the building programme. Using today’s latest technology virtually any facade can be ‘unitised’, that is to say, it can be broken down into smaller units which can easily be lifted into place and joined together on site. The additional costs of weatherproof interfaces between units are quickly offset with the speed of construction saving valuable time within the building programme. A further benefit is that the interfaces between units offer vertical and horizontal movement to take up both building thermal movement and to accommodate live loads which maintaining weather tightness of the facade. Each unit is usually carried on the slab edge and use setting out cleats which are accurately levelled prior to panels coming to site and being lifted into place. Whilst not an entirely new construction method, technology today allows for high performance, high quality facades to be manufactured off-site and more recently with services built in. Aluprof have been working with specifiers and main contractors to develop

aluminium systems which can be incorporated into or form unitised constructions which lead the market in this form of construction. Crucial to the value chain for unitised construction, Value Engineering seeks to reduce cost often by removing unnecessary physical material in a project in a effort to reduce costs of material and therefore reduce the cost of the project. Value Engineering is commonly seen as a secondary operation undertaken when costs need to be reduced on a quoted project for various reasons. Of late, the term seems to have taken on a negative connotation suggesting just a reduction in material content, not always for the good of the project as a whole. Value Management on the other hand has wider reaching remit and whilst it encompasses Value Engineering at the outset, it is the complete ‘value chain’ that is explored in adopting Value Management principles.

At the outset Value Management looks at every process from order through to completion. In the facade industry the principles of Value Management have been adopted by Aluprof in the UK to deliver competitive installations in conjunction with their extensive network of fabricators and installers. Schöck wrapped parapets solution for Grade 1 listed rebuild

The Regent’s Park end of London’s Portland Place has been the scene of a significant number of astonished looks recently. As passers-by have discovered that the iconic Park Crescent West, a Grade 1 listed residential Regency terrace built by architect John Nash, is no more. However, all is not as it first seems. The original Nash terrace, completed in 1821, was badly damaged during the Second World War and restored in the 1960s to provide offices and residential accommodation. The work though was considered flawed and not true to the original. As a result this is now a very rare case where the demolition of the Grade I listed terrace ‘and its replacement with a more scholarly replica would preserve and enhance rather than obliterate its significance’. Renamed Regents Crescent, the project will see the post-war version of the terrace converted back to the residential use for which the early 19th Century building was intended. Rebuilt with new brickwork and stucco that represents the original Nash design; and with interiors that respond to the heritage character of the architecture, the finished development will result in up to 76 grand London residences, nine mews houses at the rear and private gardens.

Avoidance of thermal bridging is critical

The construction comprises a reinforced concrete frame with vertical concrete columns and horizontal flat slabs, stabilised by new reinforced concrete cores and walls. The roof structure constitutes a lightweight steel roof. The entire project is detailed to a very high level of specification and great attention has been paid to avoiding the risk of any potential thermal bridging problems. Preventing thermal bridging along the parapets was a critical consideration for such a high performance development, because as with balconies, parapets can allow conductive materials to transfer energy through the thermal barrier. Conventionally, in the majority of cases, the method of insulating parapets and parapet walls is to wrap the perimeter of the wall with an insulation barrier. However, the Schöck Isokorb used here offers a solution that is

both more cost-effective and more thermally efficient than conventional wrapped parapets. Its 120mm insulation thickness results in low psi-values and therefore significantly reduces heat loss – and there is no wrapping required. It permits a more sophisticated construction opportunity for greater freedom of design and allows flexible distance between elements according to load requirements. An added benefit being there is no risk of any additional thermal bridging through balustrade fixings. Other key factors are durability and water impermeability. The Isokorb solution does not require maintenance and there is no risk of expensive restoration due to waterproofing problems. Another solution from the Schöck Isokorb range, a modular unit for steel-to-steel connectivity, is also utilised within the lightweight steel roof construction. element for connecting cantilevered steel girders to steel structures. It can be used to minimise the risk of therrmal bridging in new construction or renovation projects involving penetrating support structures such as canopy roofs, frame system crossbars or balconies. The modular design of this Isokorb type ensures that it can be adapted to all profile sizes and load bearing capacity requirements.

Totally verifiable performance The Schöck product types used at Regent’s Crescent are for wrapped parapets and steel-to-steel connectivity, but the comprehensive Isokorb range from Schöck also offers solutions for concrete-tosteel situations and concrete-to-concrete. When any Isokorb product type is incorporated into residential

buildings, the required fRsi value – the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk that must be equal to or greater than 0.75 – is always comfortably met. The range also complies with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2012, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings and respectively heat losses through non-repeating thermal bridges. CAN GATHERING DATA REALLY SAVE LIVES? The modern emergency lighting scheme is becoming intelligent!

ince the tragic events of June 2017, which saw 72 people lose their lives in the fire that engulfed Grenfell Tower in West London, the area surrounding building safety and compliance is now, more than ever before, at the forefront of people’s minds.

Although not defined as a public or commercial premise, the 24 storey residential tower block contained many communal areas such as escape routes, assembly points and walkways which would have required a building risk assessment to help ensure the safety of the

occupants and minimize the risk of fire. Amongst other things, the risk assessment would have defined the need for evacuation aids such as the provision of a fire prevention system, sprinkler system and emergency lighting. In 2005, engineering consultancy, Capita Symonds compiled a report into the tower which contained a number of health and safety concerns regarding the emergency lighting system installed throughout the building. The report stated that the emergency lighting had fallen below standard and that the system was not being properly managed by the appointed responsible person, and that there was a perceived unwillingness to acknowledge the need for urgent maintenance and repair. The report went on to specifically highlight the essential requirement for adequate emergency lighting to ensure the safe and immediate

evacuation of occupants in an emergency situation, due to a lack of natural daylight in the building’s stairwells. Furthermore, the report stated that the building’s occupants were constantly at risk because of the ‘non-functioning emergency lighting’. Grenfell Tower is just one example of a residential building where the emergency lighting of communal areas was deemed as inadequate, yet in this area, it is unfortunately not alone, and this continues to be the case. As recently as 2018, a survey revealed that more than 40% of residential housing estates have the same issue of sub-standard and inadequate emergency lighting systems. This 40% figure however, is only representative from actual buildings surveyed and found to have to have non-compliances. In reality the figure is much higher and is estimated to be closer to 80%.

Compliance and emergency lighting There are a number of health and safety and construction directives together with legislative material which is published to ensure the health and safety of building occupants. In the area of fire safety, the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fire regulatory reform order applies, and it is this order that specifies the need for the initial risk assessment.

The risk assessment Before embarking on the design, a full risk assessment must be undertaken to determine the areas in the building which have a requirement for emergency lighting. This will include escape routes, open areas, points of emphasis such as locations of essential fire safety equipment and any areas deemed as highrisk task. Communal areas within residential properties may only

form perhaps 10% of the core area but must still be covered by a full risk assessment, carried out by a qualified, responsible person.

An accurate and compliant emergency lighting scheme design, undertaken in line with the initial risk assessment, and the emergency lighting code of practice, BS 5266-1 and its accompanying standards; BS EN 50172 and EN 1838, will ensure that the areas covered are illuminated correctly and adequately. In many cases however, the risk assessment is not adhered to correctly, partly due to budgetary constraints and unhelpful timescales etc. As a result, the lighting levels can be compromised as lower quality, inferior fixtures are used and the number of fixtures as specified is reduced. This can lead to poor uniformity and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;dark spots. Similarly, a poorly designed escape

A scheme designed and installed in line with the risk assessment and the relevant emergency lighting standards will ensure initial compliance. This, however, is just the start. For the emergency lighting to remain compliant throughout its designed lifetime, there are many factors to be considered. The performance of its associated components is heavily dependent on how they are operated and maintained. The rechargeable battery for instance is a critical component but it can be highly susceptible to abuse through neglect, exposure to high temperatures and over-cycling etc. For self-contained emergency lighting applications, the battery

must satisfy a four-year design life in line with BS EN 60598-2-22. It is often the case though that the battery has seen many full cycles in a very short period of time due to mains interruptions and power outages associated with ‘pre-handover’ installation periods. In many cases, the battery is connected and installed sometimes weeks or months before the mains power is applied. In these critical periods the battery may discharge to dangerous levels from which it cannot recover. Some control gears use remote software commands such as inhibition mode and rest mode to prevent unnecessary battery discharge, but this is generally in conjunction with a control system. The battery has a maximum ambient temperature rating of 50⁰C but often this figure is exceeded as the battery is placed in thermally unsuitable luminaires during the re-engineering process. Exposure to temperatures above the battery’s maximum rating can impact greatly on the lifetime.

Another consideration is the maintenance of the emergency lighting fixture. For instance, if placed in a dirty environment, the light source may not be delivering its declared luminous flux, resulting in lower levels of illumination.

Intelligent diagnostics and compliance Taking into account the requirements and challenges mentioned above, it is easy to see how difficult it can become for the appointed ‘responsible person’ to maintain the compliance of the emergency lighting scheme. Upkeep of the logbook, including logging any changes to building layout, structure and the internal fabric. Reparations, changes to the décor, colour schemes, all have an impact on the on-going compliance of the scheme. Monitoring the health of the battery and control gear manually, without an automatic test system renders the task almost a full-time role. To take the battery as an example, it is almost impossible to monitor its health whilst ensuring it still operates within its designed parameters throughout its life. Some manufacturers have now started to develop diagnostics through on-board software to monitor battery health. Diagnostics allow the user to interrogate several parameters from the emergency lighting control gear, as it logs and records through its lifetime. The idea is to

provide the responsible person with preventative data regarding the on-going performance of the associated equipment and to highlight any potential problems or drop in performance. One example of diagnostic data collection is the ability for the control gear to monitor and record its own temperature for retrospective and on-going analysis. This can then be used to help maintenance of the battery for instance, as it approaches end of life, rather than after end of life failure. Additionally, and perhaps more significantly, diagnostics can be used to monitor and record the number and frequency of emergency switching cycles. From this it can be interpreted whether the components are being operated correctly within their designed parameters. Diagnostics can be used to measure and record the battery voltage, again providing valuable preventative information on battery health and status. These are just some of the benefits that intelligent emergency control gears can offer through their diagnostic functionality. As

developments expand, many more values can be recorded and used to aid more efficient, preventative maintenance and thereby ensure the scheme remains compliant and effective, whilst keeping tighter control of the costs associated with reactive maintenance. In a rapidly changing world where technology is evolving on a daily base and impacting on our personal lives, it is logical to presume that more intelligent technologies will find their way into public buildings as well.

Diagnostics, if used correctly and as intended will help to ensure that safety critical systems, such as fire prevention and emergency lighting, benefit in terms of compliance and efficiency whilst helping to keep occupants safe. The Capita Symonds report highlighted the lack of a compliant emergency lighting system in Grenfell tower in 2005. Whether this situation remained in place up to and during the tragic events of June 2017 is not clear, but what is certain is that a non-compliant

emergency lighting system could only have added to the general feeling of panic and disorientation. In short, it would have served as a hindrance rather than help. If we have the opportunity to help maintain the on-going compliance of these buildings and the safety of their occupants, by producing intelligent technologies, we should take it. These are just some of the benefits that intelligent emergency control gears can offer through their diagnostic functionality. As developments expand, many more values can be recorded and used to aid more efficient, preventative maintenance and thereby ensure the scheme remains compliant and effective, whilst keeping tighter control of the costs associated with reactive maintenance.

Making Waves at Rossall Coastal Defence Ecology Park Three bridges with unique ‘wave’ style parapets were installed by CTS Bridges Ltd in the Mythic Coast inspired Ecology Park as part of the Rossall Coastal Protection Scheme. Artist Stephen Broadbent of Broadbent Studios was responsible for the design of the ecology park and his concept for the bridges required the parapets to have a wave effect made from hardwood spindles. CTS worked with Balfour Beatty and Broadbent Studios to develop the design into a buildable solution for the three bridges. Twelve spindles formed one wave effect and each of the ekki hardwood spindles were cut from a larger timber section to achieve the exact shape required. Once cut they were numbered prior to being methodically fitted by our joiners.

The Ekki hardwood deck has Hi-Grip Excel non-slip inserts to provide a slip resistant surface on the multi use bridges. The three bridges were manufactured by CTS at their factory in Huddersfield prior to being delivered and installed on site in time for the opening of the Coastal Flood Defence scheme carried out by Balfour Beatty for Wyre Council in partnership with the Environment Agency. Hedging is now becoming an increasingly sought-after component of modern urban and rural due to its versatility and functionality. Aesthetically pleasing, cost effective and environmentally friendly, the humble hedge is seeing a renaissance that expands its use to encompass more than simply garden, park or field planting. New housing schemes in particular are being injected with life and

character via the astute and practical use of hedging; it helps to define boundaries but also creates structure, texture and privacy in addition to being visually pleasing to the eye. This creates immediate kerb appeal as well as positives for the future potential homeowner. More cost effective than fencing

Hedging can also be used to provide a natural rather than manmade, environmental solution to areas experiencing poor drainage or floods with plants taking the place of potentially expensive constructed drainage solutions in order to help combat problems in areas regularly experiencing issues with excess water. Accoya® selected for the latest Ivy Collection restaurant opening The Ivy Collection, a select group of upmarket restaurants, brasseries and cafes, has recently opened its latest restaurant – The Ivy in the Park, in Canada Square Park – London. The creative design was able to successfully combine quality with sustainability with the specification of world-leading, high-performance sustainable wood, Accoya® throughout the striking new build.

The new brasserie, opened to the public in mid – October 2018, was designed by esteemed architect William Conway of William Matthews Associates and, following a rigorous bid process, lead construction firm Wiehag Timber Construction were selected to build the latest eatery in the Ivy Collections’ portfolio. The new restaurant, with a two-level bar, restaurant and external dining area, is aptly positioned within one of Canary Wharf’s most sustainable areas, overlooking a vibrant green space for events.

The Ivy in the Park is constructed from glulam and cross-laminated timber: internal members are made from spruce, whilst external beams and columns are glulam Accoya®. The specification of Accoya® wood further extended to the rainscreen trellis which covers the external walls. For the Accoya® wood elements of the project, a total of 47 glulam beams, 42 glulam columns and 740m² of rainscreen trellis were required. Wiehag GmbH machined it into the glulam beams and columns – alongside the trellis – and finished in the factory with a Remmers Aqua HSL 35 Grey Stain prior to installing on-site.

Canary Wharf Group, who has overseen the largest urban regeneration project ever undertaken in Europe, wanted timber to be used for the external façade of this project, however they needed a low maintenance solution. Performance and specification sealed the deal with Taylor Lindsey who invests in the company’s first Hyundai machine Taylor Lindsey is an awardwinning property development and construction company based in the historic City of Lincoln Established in 1945, the company has some of the best located and most prominent development sites in the area. The business has designed and built commercial properties for a wide range of local, regional and national companies. Managing Director, James Taylor said, “We specialise in well-built, traditional homes on some of the best located sites in Lincoln and the surrounding areas, and we have been building new homes for over 70-years.”

To assist the company with its extensive development programme is a fleet of 60 construction machines – the company’s latest investment is a 14-tonne HX140L, which was purchased through Hyundai dealer Willowbrook Plant, based in Corby, Northamptonshire.

Willowbrook Plant Sales Manager, Martin Lewis commented on the deal he said, “Taylor Lindsey has run competitor’s machines for several decades. They were looking for a new 14-tonne machine to upgrade its existing fleet- and after involving numerous manufacturers machines during demonstrations – they made the commercial decision purchase the Hyundai HX140 machine through Willowbrook.” Martin added, “This machine has now been working on site for a number of weeks and the feedback from the operator is very positive.” “It was the specification and performance of the HX140L which lead us to buy the machine,” reported James. “These were the main reasons for choosing Hyundai over other brands we demonstrations of. I particularly liked the push button start and the layout of the cab, which

is designed and built for comfort. The machine is also simple to operate and has excellent safety features. The weight to power ratio is also very good and it’s very fuel efficient.” James added, “The operators have also given the Hyundai machine the thumbs up and have praised its performance and operator comfort.” “We have worked with Willowbrook Plant in the past and have bought other machines from the company – we find that they offer a very good service and provide prompt attention. Based on the performance of the HX140L - we will be buying more Hyundai machines in the future.” Concluded James. PARTNERSHIP DELIVERS SUSTAINABLE, VIABLE MULTI-SITE SOLUTION BAM Construction is progressing with a £67m framework to build a batch of secondary schools in the North-East, won in part through its collaboration with Gilberts Blackpool.

The four schools will all be ventilated using Gilberts’ innovative MFS unit, which pioneered the concept of hybrid ventilation in multi-occupancy rooms such as classrooms- a concept recognised as a valid strategy by the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). Crucial to the deal was the partnership between BAM and Gilberts, to evolve the core MFS unit to create a solution that was standardised as far as possible, and simplified the building’s construction and operation.

Explained Martin Sibley, operations manager services engineering North East BAM Construction, “The ESFA has key requirements of affordability, and specifies design replication and repetition to achieve this. It further demands that the M&E specification is simplified, particularly regarding building controls, yet the ventilation strategy is robust. Our collaboration with Gilberts proved invaluable

in achieving a commercially viable alternative to conventional heating and ventilating strategies.” “It sounds simple,” Martin adds, “but ensuring details like the louvre connection spigot being the right depth to allow building activities such as plastering and decorating the window reveals to be carried out once the louvre had been fitted, is very important to the overall build process. Things like this can only be achieved with a collaborative approach to product design.” Added Roy Jones, Gilberts’ Technical Director, “Our MFS had already been used as the preferred offering in other school batches, because of its performance and simplified installation. By collaborating together we have been able to address the challenges of each site and building variation, to enhance our existing product so that it delivers the stringent requirements in cost, performance, ease of installation and standardisation, to benefit this and future projects.”

Thus, a single MFS256 with LTHW coil and boost facility will feature as part of the window in the external façade of each classroom to ensure the teaching space is ventilated and heated as a stand-alone solution. Standardisation of the architectural detailing of each window means a standard MFS256 can be used across all the school batches, reducing costs and simplifying installation. The strategic positioning of each unit ensures the wall and ceiling achieve the coanda effect to provide the correct air movement and comfort conditions. Inclusion of the heat coil obviates the need for radiators, and, with the collaboration with BAM, has been engineered to be easy to access for cleaning. The boost facility on the controller gives teachers finite control, by providing up to double the air volume to provide rapid heating or purge ventilation, as necessary, at the touch of a button.

For specialised areas such as IT suites and science laboratories, Gilberts has refined the controls of the MFS to create a standard product that can cope with the more specific demands – fume cupboard interlocks/ overrides and gas interlocks- in science rooms. As part of the process refining the core MFS into a standard solution, BAM and Gilberts worked closely together, with practical experience from previous schemes, to fine tune the unit controls, the design of which Gilberts ratified in its inhouse test laboratory. The testing proved the final solution with no 10degreeC limit on supply air, inclusion of the LTHW coil and boost facility delivered sufficient capability to meet all the requirements of the ESFA’s output specification, and was robust enough to provide comfortable conditions rapidly. Installed through the external façade or window, Mistrale MFS mixes internal and external air

to ventilate the internal space. A mixing damper within modulates airflow to allow the new, fresh air to mix with the warm exhaust air, thus extracting its heat without the need for an exchanger. The integrated low energy fan energises to blend the internal air, ensuring an even distribution of airflow, with control over temperature and CO2 levels within, and maintenance of a comfortable internal environment for occupants. Each unit also achieves relevant acoustic considerations: its operational ‘noise’ is less than 30dbA, and it has been engineered to absorb external noise to keep within the classroom criteria required by BB93. Gilberts has further taken care to attain compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document L: Mistrale MFS attains air leakage better than legislative requirements- 5m3/HR/m2, and a U value of 1W/m2/°C. The electric drill inventor keeps fuelling its cordless revolution Having launched new cordless grinders, and a hammer drill earlier in the year, FEIN is extending its 18 V product range with the ASCM 18 QSW 4-speed cordless drill/driver. This is an alternate version of the 12 and 18 volt ASCM machine, already popular within the community but with two new benefits. Firstly the Multi-Volt feature allows the machine to be powered by a 12 to 18 V lithium-ion battery, and secondly the body is lighter and more compact, weighing just 1.7kg.
