Farrells picked to design Overground station at Old Oak Common Terry Farrell has been appointed as masterplanner and architect for part of the vast transport interchange planned for Old Oak Common in west London. The practice was appointed by Canadian consultant WSP which was picked by Transport for London to develop three options for a London Overground station. The team has been asked to come up with a preferred solution for linking the Overground to the proposed HS2/Crossrail interchange. Under the government’s plans, Old Oak Common would be transformed from a sprawl of railway sidings beside Wormwood Scrubs into one of the country’s best-connected stations. Farrell has been championing the idea for several years and was commissioned by Hammersmith & Fulham council in 2011
to create a vision for the regeneration of the whole area. The rail infrastructure is expected to lead to the creation of thousands of homes and new jobs in the area. Last year Queen’s Park Rangers announced plans to move from Loftus Road to a new 40,000-seater stadium at Old Oak designed by Populous.

English Heritage is treating an application to list 269 Leigham Court Road at grade II as a “priority case” because of fears the buildings will be levelled by a developer. A campaign to save the 1971-75 sheltered housing in Streatham, south-west London, is gathering momentum, backed by former RIBA presidents and vice-presidents including Jack Pringle, Angela Brady and Bob Giles. Lambeth says it needs to sell a number of its sheltered units to fund the modernisation of the rest and has set 2018 as a disposal date for Leigham Court, though residents claim they were previously warned it could happen within 18 months.

It is expected to involve the addition of a new complex of galleries and spaces as well as the refurbishment of the existing building.
Haverstock unveils Aylesbury Crematorium designs Planning application likely to be considered this summer Architect Haverstock has released images of the new crematorium it has designed for Aylesbury. It said that the work was based on a combination of a single low-roof element for the crematorium’s arrival, waiting and administration areas, and an “upward looking” double-height, timber-clad focus for the centre’s sedum-roofed chapel and crematory. Haverstock said its plans also included the “careful programmatic control” of movement to maximise the privacy and seclusion of mourning parties. The proposals, commissioned by the Chilterns Crematorium Joint Committee, have been submitted to Aylesbury Vale District Council.
The neoclassical National Gallery stands in one of the most prominent positions in the Scottish capital, on the Mound beneath the castle. It was designed by William Henry Playfair and opened in 1859, two years after his death. Playfair also designed the neighbouring Royal Scottish Academy, which underwent a refurbishment of its own 10 years ago. The Playfair Project also saw the creation of the subterranean Weston Link designed by John Miller & Partners. Hoskins has previously worked on other historic cultural builings in Scotland, including the £47.4 million redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland, also in Edinburgh, which completed in 2011 and won the Doolan Prize. After BD broke the news this morning the the appointment and containing the following quotes: Michael Clarke, director of the Scottish National Gallery, said: “The outstanding collection of Scottish art held at the Scottish National

for regeneration of South Wales colliery site AN AmbITIOUS REGENERATION SChEmE ON ThE DERElICT SITE Of A fORmER WElSh COllIERy AND COkING WORkS hAS WON OUTlINE PlANNING APPROvAl. Master-planned by LHC Architecture + Urbanism on behalf of CPL Industries Ltd, the project will see the demolition of Cwm Coking works and over £17million worth of site remediation. There will also be landscape restoration, the development of up to 851 homes, a primary school, sports facilities and further public open space. The development will be a catalyst for the regeneration of neighbouring Beddau, a rural village close to Pontypridd which grew with the colliery from 1958 until its closure by the National Coal Board in 1986 and the later closure of the Cwm Coke works in 2002. Within the plans for a sustainable community development for up to 2,400 people, the LHC designs have been careful site. A pair of Grade II* listed cooling towers used in the coking process have been incorporated in situ and set within a parkland setting to form a focal point within the development. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s development control committee awarded outline planning consent on April 24th 2014 to CPL Industries Ltd, for whom LHC have worked for the past 6 years to develop the plans. Urban Designer and Landscape Architect Ian Richardson, who is an Associate at LHC said: “The regeneration of Cwm Cokeworks and Colliery will provide the opportunity to link existing communities, restore a despoiled landscape and create a dynamic extension to an existing settlement. This high quality mixed-use regeneration scheme will capitalise on the most importantly, will act as a further catalyst for the ongoing regeneration of the Welsh Valleys.” Beddau’s roots are in the mining industry, which developed through the late 19th century. Cwm Colliery was opened by the Great Western Colliery Company in 1909 to provide coal for the Great Western Railway. At its peak it was the nearly 2000 men in 1960. The Coke Works were opened in 1957 by the National Coal Board to produce high grade coke (the purest fuel with the highest carbon content) to fuel the furnaces in the metal making industry. Coal production stopped in 1986 with coke manufacturing ceasing in July 2002, since which time the works have lain dormant with the equipment decaying.
It is estimated that it will cost £17 million to clear and decontaminate the site, which includes reducing the height of the colliery tip by up to 10 metres in places to create a more realistic topography.

The proposals will involve protecting and maintaining existing ecologically sensitive wetlands and the opening and introducing recreational routes and wildlife and habitat corridors. Mark Scoot, on behalf of CPL Industries Ltd said: “Over the past six years, an enormous amount of work has gone into the preparation of the planning application and the scheme itself. We are now looking forward to seeing our vision become reality with the beginning of regeneration work which will make there.” The Trevenson Park project is part of a multi-million pound scheme which is being delivered under the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA’s) ‘Public Land Initiative’ to help bring prosperity back to the west Cornwall towns of Camborne, Pool and Redruth.
