John Thompson Wins Planning For Ashford Expansion John Thompson & Partners (JTP) has won planning for a controversial 5,750-home urban extension in Kent. The Chilmington Green scheme was said to be the biggest application Ashford council had ever considered.
The masterplan is based on a “warped grid” of interconnected streets that follow the site’s topographical contours and landscape features. Green corridors follow existing watercourses. JTP project partner Clare San Martin said a high street, market square, boulevard and two neighbourhood squares were intended to provide a “memorable sequence of spaces and a clear structure for the residential areas”.
The site was reserved in the council’s 2008 core strategy for a sustainable urban extension of up to 7,000 homes.
“We have really enjoyed our role in this exciting and challenging project,” she said.
The number of houses was scaled back to enable more green space to be included in the plan which will feature

Construction growth heads north The construction industry is expected to grow by 23% over the next two years, contributing £12 billion to the UK economy, according to the latest forecast from the Construction Products Association. The CPA’s autumn forecast predicts construction output will grow by 4.8% in 2014 and 5.3% in 2015 - up from the 4.7% and 4.8% it forecast in the summer. The CPA said output would jump by 23% by the end of 2018. Other highlights from the forecast include: Private housing starts expected to grow 18% in 2014 and 10% in 2015 The private commercial sector set to increase 3.7% in 2014 and 6.1% in 2015
Greenwich Market work starts Barr Gazetas has released images of its proposals for the redevelopment of Greenwich Market in south-east London. Work to redevelop the scheme has just begun with the work planned in four phases and eventually completing in 2016. with new storage for the Greenwich Market traders. This will temporarily house part of the market whilst improvements are made to the main market area in Phases 2 and 3 and will eventually house a new pavilion for a food market and occasional events. Barr Gazetas was brought in after Hopkins was dropped from the £25 million project in 2012, despite winning a public inquiry into their proposal for the World Heritage Site in 2011
Roads construction will rise 46.1% by 2018 Energy infrastructure is anticipated to grow 118.2% by 2018 Noble Francis, CPA economics director, said: “Our continues and begins to broaden. “Short-term activity is still led by private housing, infrastructure and commercial, and areas of public sector strength. “We believe the expansion will continue through 2018. “Recovery is not a foregone conclusion however, and several important risks remain, primarily around the strength of the UK and Eurozone economies, the policy outcomes following the 2015 general election and the impact of any supply constraints such as the scarcity of labour and materials.”
Eric Pickles was criticised for approving the scheme on appeal after Greenwich council roundly rejected the original plans back in 2009. At the time Ray Walker, chair of Greenwich council’s planning board, said: “It is regrettable that the new secretary of state… has chosen to overturn the unanimous decision of the council.... Localism is a word which seems to be increasingly deployed but carries very little actual meaning for the government.” The Hopkins scheme, which included a 100-bed hotel and shops, was “totally out of keeping with the history and architecture of Greenwich town centre,” he said. It attracted 1,000 letters of objection. Barr Gazetas’ scheme drops the hotel but will include new retail space behind Durnford Street.

Pickles Hails Increase In Planning Permissions Eric Pickles used his speech at the Tory party conference in Birmingham this week to hail an increase in residential planning applications submitted in the last year. The communities secretary said 230,000 homes received planning permission in the last year, the highest since the crash of 2008. Figures from the Home Builders’ Federation (HBF) suggest that applications for 192,000 homes were approved in 2013, meaning Pickles’ According to the HBF the number of new homes gaining planning permission hit a low of 147,000 in 2009. However, the receipt of planning
permission doesn’t guarantee construction will start, with land speculators often gaining permission simply to allow them to resell land. In addition, with the trend for a larger percentage of approvals to come from larger sites, it may be many years before homes are built out. In his speech, Pickles ridiculed the Labour Party’s record of building homes in government, and said: “Rather than set national targets for home ownership and house building, we are getting on with the job of delivering. homes have been built under this government. And more council houses have been built than under
13 wasted years of Labour. His speech followed the controversial launch by prime minister David Cameron of a commitment to build 100,000 “starter homes” which rates and avoid incurring regulatory charges and the need to meet the zero carbon standard. Pickles said: “For future generations who work hard and want to get on, we make a commitment: We will The new policy, called Help to Buy: Starter Homes, has been criticised environmental groups for seeking to avoid meeting common standards
Luxury Housing Markets Creating ‘Dystopian’ Cities A leading academic on global cities has criticised the emergence of super-prime residential markets in cities around the world for helping create “dystopian” urban environments. Saskia Sassen, co-chair of the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University, told the World Architecture Festival in Singapore that the emergence of luxury residential areas populated by a wealthy global elite was damaging many cities, citing London as the“number one example”. Sassen, who said Asian cities including Singapore and Hong Kong were exhibiting a similar trend, said: “It’s the future for many cities and I don’t think it’s a good thing.” She added: “I have two visions for the future of cities, one dystopian and one wonderful. While I am essentially an optimist, many of the current trends are bad.” Sassen criticised the development of many cities as being solely focused on density: “We have a lot of We’re in the business of building homogenous terrain “We have to have a clear idea of what a city is. Dart Valley Systems Ltd has been working closely with Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, Capital Engineering Manager; Paul Humphreys to improve infection control measures. An initial trial set was set up at North Devon District Hospital using the AquariTherm™ Manual tap. As the AquariTherm range was designed with healthcare environments in mind, it was a great match. One of the taps main selling point, was the patented isolation feature, which allows the tap to be removed for servicing or exchange without the need to isolate the water or remove any panels. This unique feature reduces any down time during servicing or disinfection, can be removed, replaced or
cleaned in a matter of seconds. The AquariTherm™ manual tap also includes a mechanism to ensure that the hot water is mixed before being delivered to the users’ hands, ensuring the user of the tap. Additionally the tap body stays cool during use, even with prolonged running of hot water. As the trial was a proven success, Capital Engineering Manager; Paul Humphreys then installed them on two refurbishment projects in the Lundy Ward and Roborough Suite. DVS look forward to continued work with Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust by supplying innovative products that perform to exceptional standards.

Into The Flow A walk-in wet room will instil space, luxury and style into any bathroom
While we are clearly a nation of bath lovers, the concept of installing a full-blown, walk-in wet room in our own homes is enough to get us reaching for the shower gel, pronto. A true wet room isn’t just a big shower, it is a fully waterproofed, open-plan room that has been expertly transformed into a single, walk-in space thanks to clever drainage and seamless tiling.‘Around 90 per cent of our customers are now asking for wet areas rather than the traditional shower enclosure,’ says Jade O’Bryan, designer at Ripples. ‘People want showering areas that are as maintenance-free as possible, by eliminating hinges, seals and even doors and replacing them with simple pieces of glass or even a tiled wall to walk behind. Wet rooms open up the bathroom and create a more attractive space.’

Keylex Locks Help Keep Epsom College Students Safe Keylex digital mechanical locks have been supplied by Relcross to Epsom College for a number of years. Some have been students so that only those living in a particular house have access. An easily changed number code negates the need for issuing keys to everyone with the potential security risk from lost or stolen keys. A number code, like a simple PIN number, also has the advantage of being with you at all times, once remembered. Epsom chose the K700 lock which is suited to external doors and gives the mortice sash lock or multi-point lock. The mechanism happily copes with many hundreds of operations per day and, electronics or electrical wiring. Although three to six digit codes are recommended giving over 4,000 permutations, code combinations can include up to twelve buttons.

Berry Barriers Helps Cure Parking Capacity at Derriford Hospital www.berrysystems.co.uk Like many hospitals, Derriford in Plymouth has to match with limited parking availability. The new 627 space multi-storey car park on the North West Quadrant will go a long way towards easing the situation for the daily 8000 footfall to the hospital. Part of a 6.6 hectare site being developed by Wharfside Regeneration for Plymouth Hospitals Trust, the new car park was designed by international architects S333 and built by Sir Robert McAlpine Limited. The eco-friendly design features green walls with climbing plants on the two lowest levels, steel lattice work on the next two and timber latticework on levels 5 and 6. Advice was sought from barrier specialists Berry Systems who recommended their RB1X spring steel and minimise damage to the barrier, the vehicle and the car park deck on which the barrier is mounted. After an impact the barrier returns to its original position to provide on-going protection. Berry Beam rails were used Armco W section. ProShield™ Provides the Solution When Burgin Conservatories & Orangeries faced a problematic conservatory installation after the wettest winter on record - Rapierstar Protect ProShield™ came to the rescue. The gable end PVCu framed conservatory was constructed in the garden of a three story town is part of a terrace and is constructed of concrete block type masonry, which on testing along with the mortar joints, demonstrated high water absorption characteristics. The conservatory was built with cavity tray and vertical DPCs as you would expect in such an exposed area but the property still became susceptible to moisture patches within the conservatory. After checks to ensure no water was penetrating because of building faults, it emerged that penetrating rain was tracking outward to the plastered wall area inside the new conservatory. ProShield™ XT Cream was applied to the full extent of the rear wall area, around and above the conservatory. Unlike water repellent surface coatings or physical building additions, ProShield™ treatments penetrate deeply, combining at the molecular level with the structure. This creates a strong bond and when cured is invisible to the naked eye, retaining the look of the original brick.
