We’ve set the standard everyone else follows Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field. We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled. Why? Because we have never compromised on quality.

The way the scheme works is that once contacted, Aura Light visits the company to conduct a survey of the existing lighting installation and energy consumption by a technical expert. This is then followed with the provision of a new lighting plan with and CO2 saving documentation. Once the project is agreed, it is entirely managed by Aura Light from performance guarantee during the full contract period. Pugin’s Nottingham gem receives paving update with materials from Brett
www.brettpaving.co.uk Furthering its sound reputation for supplying Local Authorities with quality hard landscaping materials, commercial specialist Brett Landscaping has been involved with Nottingham City Council in providing appropriate paving for restoration schemes citywide. In the City Centre, Brett has supplied materials for redeveloping two highway facilities – one on Derby Road – serving the Augustus Pugin-designed Nottingham Cathedral Church of St Barnabas, as well as the centrally located Heathcote Street. At Derby Road, 3,500m2 of indigenous Fens Moss laid to replace the existing, degenerated concrete, with supply management for the project overseen by Kevin Jones, who explains what was required, provided, and successfully achieved with the help of Brett and its materials: “The original footpath was in need of replacement, creating an ideal opportunity for a new hardlandscaping design to be implemented; one which would be an aesthetic improvement as well as a “Fens Moss seemed a sound choice for the heritage area installation and was favoured by Nottingham City colour palette of predominantly blue and grey with

Senior Engineer, Highway & Energy Infrastructure at Nottingham City Works Department adds to the points made by Kevin, by saying: “We’re extremely has supplied, however, it’s the robust construction combined with manufacturing quality that gives the paving a promise of longevity and return on investment. “We regard regeneration work, such as that completed on Derby Road, as essential to maintaining a vibrant, safe and functioning City Centre, so making sound choices with relation to materials that are purposefully designed to perform for years-to-come is a key consideration and one relevant to the second urban project that involved supply from Brett, at Heathcote Here, a carriageway which experiences heavy vehicular use and footfall was chosen for regeneration, and refurbished using 1200m2 of the same Fens Moss Yorkstone paving; once again presenting an attractive alternative to the concrete which was there before. Kevin explains that: “Laying the paving, in conjunction and open highway system, and as such, a better facility Similarly, price point and project cost have been key factors to the project’s success, and areas where Brett delivered on expectation. “We’re delighted with the outcome of the City Centre hard landscaping works, and anticipate seeing the paving perform in situ in

Tarmac first to trial new safermixer design in UK Tarmac, the UK’s leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions company, has underlined its commitment to improving vulnerable road user safety by becoming the first company in the UK to trial a new Econic concrete mixer. The vehicle has been designed by manufacturer Mercedes-Benz to enhance the driver’s field of vision, particularly on busy urban roads. It features a panoramic windscreen and floor-to-ceiling doors, allowing drivers with improved visibility of cyclists particularly if they approach the nearside of the vehicle, a key blind spot in traditional-modelled vehicles. It also features a low-entry cab - with only two steps from the ground - which greatly reduces the risk of slipping, tripping and falling when leaving the vehicle. Tarmac is trialling the 26 tonne concrete mixer with 6 metres’ capacity at its Silvertown ready mix concrete plant in London. Commenting on the new vehicle, the company’s national transport manager, Sean McGrae, said: “We operate the largest vehicle fleet in the industry, and are committed to improving vulnerable road user safety across the UK. The trial of the Econic mixer is part of our broader approach to road user safety. “We are pleased to be working with vehicle manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz to trial this revolutionary new safety design. As an industry, it’s important that we continually explore opportunities to drive improvements in this area.” In addition to a commitment to vehicle safety features, Tarmac is providing enhanced training for drivers and supporting its contract hauliers with the necessary technical support and education to make both adaptations to vehicles and behavioural changes. Tarmac is a champion of the Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety Standard (CLOCS), and helps promote a consistent nationwide specification for HGVs and aiming to change driver behaviours by ensuring the delivery of progressive training.

The HUESKER Group is the world’s leading manufacturer of Geosynthetics. Its products and services provide solutions for the business areas including earthworks and foundations, roads and pavements, environmental and hydraulic engineering as well as industrial and agricultural applications. innovative geosynthetic products, systems and solutions for traditional highway engineering applications. This area is broken down into the Base Reinforcement and Asphalt Reinforcement segments. Base Reinforcement The Base segment focuses on unbound, geosynthetic reinforced roadbase and subbase courses. Our products deliver an economical reinforcement solution wherever the subgrade exhibits inadequate bearing capacity for a sound foundation. The unbound layers of roads, paths and other pavements are subject to stringent requirements in terms of bearing capacity. Here, geosynthetics-based systems are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to standard techniques such as soil replacement or cement/lime stabilisation. solutions, Base Reinforcement can be used on the following applications: Reinforcement of temporary roads To reach building sites, construction vehicles impossible to negotiate. Site access roads built on soft ground can be

made reachable through the incorporation of high-modulus HUESKER BASE geogrids. The direct accommodation of tensile forces by the reinforcement minimises rut formation on the road surface and ensures the steady Working platforms/ wind turbines The erection of wind turbines frequently places enhanced requirements on the surrounding subsoil. To reach the work location, heavy goods consignments need to be carried safely across very soft ground. For secure installation of the wind power systems, it is essential to prevent any settlement of the crane base that may jeopardise the crane’s stability. Permanent roads and pavements For the long term prevention of deformation in pavement surfaces, the reinforcement must be capable of resisting excessive strain throughout the service lift of the structure. Thanks to their high alkali resistance, Fornit® geogrids are the ideal choice where reinforcement is installed in alkaline environments, e.g. where crushes concrete is used as the base material. Base Reinforcement for Railways

5 Real Reasons
TO CHOOSE STEAL We often get questions about comparisons of different materials. Very frequently the choice is between steel versus plastic or aluminum. Our choice at Lindab is, and has always been, steel. We will give you 5 real reasons to choose steel for your rainwater system rather than PVC or aluminum.
Most of these arguments go for all steel systems, but we think that we add even more to this fantastic material. We have been processing steel for more than 50 years and we buy over 200 000 tonnes of steel every year, so we feel that we know what we are doing. We also put our products through rigorous testing. 1. Steel has the lowest carbon footprint of all rainwater systems materials With steel you get a cost effective and environmental friendly installation that is 100 % recyclable. Our Rainline system is made from sheet steel, a raw material that has a natural place in today’s approach towards sustainability. 2. Steel stays in shape Virtually all materials are affected by differences in temperature and grows and shrinks as the weather changes. Compared to aluminum and plastic, steel has a lot smaller movement factor. This means that your installation is much more likely to last as connections and fixation points won’t take such a beating as with other materials. 3. It’s really long lived A rainwater system made of steel can last in excess of 70 years. To aid to the lifespan we rustproof the material with a 275 grams zinc coating. This gives the system a self-healing quality where scratches and cuts are automatically sealed by zinc ions that migrate to re-coat the uncovered steel.
4. Strong as steel Steel is the foundation of all modern construction, and there is a reason for that. Steel is strong. Snow, hail, falling tree branches and other circumstances can easily break a rainwater system made from aluminum or plastic materials. And even though we recommend that you are careful during the installation, a steel system is much more heavy duty than its competitors. 5. Steel is actually cheaper than plastic or aluminum The initial cost for a steel rainwater system is higher. We’re not saying that it’s not. But if you take into consideration the lifespan and maintenance needed for the respective systems, you actually save money. The lifecycle cost for a steel system is considerably lower than any other system out there. For more information contact Telephone 0121 585 2780 or E-mail: rainline@lindab.co.uk
