This month sees the launch of Mamounia Lounge (www.mamounialounge.com), Middle Eastern restaurant, cocktail bar and subterranean late-night den in the heart of Mayfair on Curzon Street. With an opulent décor of gold and bronze accented by deep jewel colours, twinkling chandeliers and rich textures, the venue is set over two floors and designed to transport clientele into a luxurious landscape of chic Middle Eastern drinking, dining and entertainment. On entering, guests will be greeted by the evocative scent of orange blossom and heady jasmine. Mosaicked floors, silver leaf ceilings and tables sprinkled with deep red Moroccan rose petals, blend traditional hospitality with modern design. The menu interprets classic Arabic dishes with Mayfair flair, showcasing Head Chef Ramdane Djebarri’s mastery of traditional cooking methods, using the very finest ingredients. His kitchen combines the best of Moroccan and Lebanese cuisines, from meltingly tender tagines in traditional clay pots to honeyed bites of Baklawa and pistachio-studded Arabic Pudding. Guests are encouraged to dine banquet-style, crowding tables with Mezze picked from a selection of the traditional, such as the freshly made Moutabel, a smoky aubergine dip blended with tahini, to the innovative, like the Mango Salad, golden in colour, sweet and powerfully flavoured with an Arabic lime dressing. A huge selection of pastries, grilled and charcoal-cooked meats and couscous dishes are to follow. The Meshoui, a slow roasted whole shoulder of lamb marinated in Moroccan spices and served with fresh dates, oranges and apricots, melts in the mouth and will make any meal unforgettable. Vegetarians have ample choice, with highlights including the Cheese Sambousek, a Lebanese light savoury pastry filled with halloumi, parsley and dried mint and Grilled King Prawns dressed with lime, garlic, chilli and garlic.
At night, the venue will come alive with beautiful bellydancers, and traditional Middle Eastern musicians, evoking the energetic buzz of Marrakech. Descending into the subterranean restaurant and bar, one is met by the colour, noise and excitement of an enchanted souk, lit by twinkling candles and scented with burning incense. Not just for dining, the electric atmosphere provides the perfect setting for late night drinking. Two bars, headed by Tony De Carvalho, serve an eclectic cocktail menu, with the restaurant’s mixologists incorporating the bold flavours of the region. Champagne cocktails include the Sheik Royal, which blends vodka infused Moroccan orange with elderflower, and there’s the Mamounia Lounge signature, Gold Digger: a combination of fresh passion fruit with vanilla vodka accompanied by a shot of champagne topped with gold leaf flakes. A snug outdoor terrace with full canopy and heated flooring, will offer an exciting Shisha Menu to be paired with innovative cocktails. Using the finest molasses every day, Mamounia Lounge shishas are prepared fresh upon request using ripe fruits including apples, baby pineapples and whole watermelons, or even custom blended to guests’ specific requirements. Mamounia Lounge Mayfair is available for private events, exclusive hire and corporate occasions. With a capacity of 230, two floors, a decadent décor and extensive menu, the venue is the ideal choice for weddings, launches and business events. A separate area with screens is perfect for meetings and presentations. www.mamounialounge.com 0207 629 2211 37a Curzon Street, Mayfair, London, W1J 7TX

The Australian-born culinary maestro brings to The Truscott Arms a reputation for creating deceptively simple dishes that let the natural flavours of great quality ingredients shine. Having honed his craft at Queensland’s acclaimed Liquorish Bistro & Bar under head chef Peter Christensen, Barry spent three years working for award-winning catering company, Sustainable Catering Services. Arriving in the UK in 2012 he immediately secured a position at the Michelin star Chez Bruce.
TALENTED YOUNG CHEF BARRY SNOOK JOINS THE TRUSCOTT ARMS’ TEAM
Since his arrival in W9, Barry has been hard at work creating new dishes for both the fine dining restaurant and the downstairs pub. The newly introduced dinner menu is brimming with the local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients that have become the hallmark of the Truscott Arms’ offering. Many of dishes on the menu change regularly, dependent on what is in season, but sample starters include such standouts as Roast quail with confit leg, Jerusalem artichoke purée, pickled shallot & meat juice vinaigrette and Cornish mussels with razor clams, brown shrimps, cod brandade, bisque & samphire. Mains meanwhile are a continuation of the theme, spearheaded by exceptional creations like Wild sea bass with prawns, Lyonnaise potatoes, watercress purée, Brittany purple cauliflower & braised fennel; Roast Yorkshire grouse with creamed savoy cabbage, braised shallot, damsons, roasted Jerusalem artichoke & sauce grand-veneur and Smoked loin of fallow deer, confit & pickled beetroots, fennel & Cumberland sauce. To finish are a range of delectable desserts, among them Fig semi-freddo, lemon curd & pistachio cream and Sailor Jerry rum, orange & Valhrona chocolate tart with lovage ice cream. Barry arrives at The Truscott Arms at an exciting time for the restaurant. Although only opened in the spring, it has already received a Three Star Rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association, the organisation’s highest mark for global sustainability as well as being named by the Evening Standard as among the Top 10 places to eat in the capital alongside Claridge’s and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. eat Say Je T’aime to Boulestin’s Valentine’s Menu Those looking for a little Valentine’s Day finesse should head to St James’ culinary landmark Boulestin where head chef Andrew Woodford has conjured up a deluxe menu packed with the finest aphrodisiac ingredients. A true feast for all the senses, these dishes are spearheaded, naturally enough, by oysters. And not just any old oysters. These Gillardeau Spéciales are reputed to be the fleshiest and finest of them all, thus packed with those rare amino acids that in turn trigger increased levels of sex hormones. Also destined to heighten the mood are delicacies such as champagne and truffle risotto; crêpe Parmentière, Aquitaine caviar with smoked salmon & crême fraîche and rich, creamy chocolate mousse.
Spicing up Valentine’s at Zumbura When it comes to boosting sexual prowess, the Kama Sutra reckoned you couldn’t go wrong with some ram's testicles boiled in sugared milk. Acclaimed new Clapham eatery Zumbura shares the same philosophy – if different ingredients – with a menu that’s similarly replete with nutrients and spices. Tailor-made to hit the spot are kofte, delicious beef meatballs stuffed with herbs in a rich velvety sauce, perhaps washed down with a Bloody Spicy cocktail, with its endorphins producing combo of chilli & coriander infused Stoli, cherry tomatoes and Chef Raju’s spicy sauce.
Seductive Staples on Offer at Truscott Arms £55 per head is a small price to show your loved one how much you care this February. Particularly when it buys you Truscott Arms’ gorgeously decadent Valentine’s feast. Maida Vales’ hybrid of food, drink and art is pulling out all the stops with five courses of flavoursome fare, each featuring some traditionally seductive staples. If the likes of oysters with champagne jelly & caviar; soft poached duck egg with salsify & celeriac velouté; beef short rib & croustillant, field mushroom, pickled walnut and hot chocolate pudding with praline parfait & almonds don’t reach the parts, then nothing will.
Casa di Fiori’s Rosé Champagne Menu Puts a Sparkle Into Valentine’s Night Die-hard romantics may prefer to whisk their beloved to a Venetian palazzo for Valentine’s night. For the more time-pressed unable to stray far from London’s West End, the glorious Casa di Fiori¸ with its Wedgwood-style blue and white walls, baroqueinspired furniture and huge glass chandeliers created by artists in Murano, will do very nicely. Enjoy a menu of specialties from the region whilst sipping on a choice from one of the capital’s most extensive selections of rosé champagnes and sparkling wines.

Made with the finest local ingredients, it will be hard not to fall in love with the likes of Kent & Essex oysters with shallot vinegar, lemon & Tabasco; smoked venison, berries, red quinoa, toasted seeds & wild herbs or roast duck breast & heart, parsnip purée, charred leek & black pudding.

With turrets, log fires and sumptuous four poster beds, 600-year-old Lumley Castle, Chester-le-Street, County Durham, is the perfect romantic retreat. Now, the hotel, which sits in nine acres of historic parkland, has launched a Cupid at the Castle offer for those looking to enjoy fine dining and an overnight stay on 14 February 2014. Couples taking advantage of the offer will be welcomed with chocolates and a bottle of Champagne in their Courtyard room in the castle’s former stable block and given a small gift as a memento of the occasion. Not only have the en-suite rooms been stylishly converted to combine historical features with modern facilities, such as flat screen TVs and complimentary internet access, but they are just a short walk from the hotel’s renowned Black Knight restaurant. There, they will be served a candlelit four-course dinner, as well as a full English breakfast the following morning.
Alternatively, visitors wishing to celebrate with dinner alone can enjoy dishes from the Black Knight Restaurant’s à la carte menu from £49.50 per person or dine from a set menu in the Garter Suite from £39.50 each. The Cupid at the Castle offer, which costs from £125 per person, is based on two people sharing a Standard Courtyard bedroom, however, upgrades to Castle Rooms will be offered subject to availability and a supplement. From 1st until 28th February, those St Moritz matchmakers are offering the ultimate love letter in the form of an overnight stay with dinner, breakfast, a bottle of champagne chilled in the room on arrival, homemade chocolate truffles and a ‘luxe love’ box of treats to be enjoyed at leisure. THE COAST IS CLEAR FOR ROMANCE AT THE ST MORITZ With its glorious setting and superb amenities, seriously stylish beach retreat St Moritz offers couples the perfect Valentine’s escape. So perfect in fact that it would be a waste to limit its romantic charms to 14th February alone. Accordingly, in the spirit of Cupid, this much lauded establishment is dedicating the entire month to the pursuit of love.
A stay at the St Moritz really does offer the perfect opportunity to reconnect and recharge. If you can bear to leave your room with its massive handmade beds and stylish velvet throws, why not head for the hotel’s sumptuous Cowshed Spa for a relaxing full body couples massage that’s sure to hit the spot? The more energetic may prefer to head for one of the long and sandy local beaches - tailor-made for walking hand in hand before heading back for an early evening cocktail and a long, lingering dinner lovingly prepared by head chef Jamie Porter. However you spend your stay, you won’t be able to resist the charms of the St Moritz. The St Moritz Month of Love offer is valid seven days a week throughout February.

Oasis Graphic Co: Rebranding Today, Restoring Tomorrow Whatever the event, whether seasonal, corporate conferences, weddings, parties or shows, temporary branding experts Oasis Graphic Co has helped numerous hotels, bars and leisure clients create impactful branded and themed environments. They frequently produce graphics for one off events using materials that can be easily applied and seamlessly removed after the event, without causing damage to existing décor. Temporary graphics can be applied to any part of a space to create impact walls, floors, existing furniture, indoors and outdoors - and custom designed to meet your requirements. At Vinopolis, London’s premier wine tasting experience and visitor attraction, Bluedog commissioned Oasis to produce and install highquality graphics for the Proctor & Gamble (P&G) US Family Home for Team US, as part of the hospitality at

the London 2012 Olympic Games. Bluedog refurbished the venue to surround the US athletes and their families with familiar products and brands from home, and provide them with somewhere to meet and relax. Oasis provided high-quality images for nine rooms throughout the Family Home. In the P&G Beauty area, Oasis hung fantastic pictures of the athletes, as well as creating hanging banners from 120 m of dye-sub printed flag material. This area featured CoverGirl, Olay and other P&G beauty brands. There was also a Pampersbranded play area for toddlers and complimentary laundry services, sponsored by Ariel, Tide and Downy, The Family Home showcased around 15 of P&G’s brands in total. Another successful temporary rebranding project took place within Twickenham’s hospitality suite and
Adidas Interactive Zone for the Heineken Cup 2012, using ultraremovable vinyl graphics on top of the existing vinyl graphics. Outside, Oasis also rebranded Twickenham’s 6m England Rugby merchandising trailer, as well as a number of freestanding structures at approximately 6m x 3m, as the Adidas Interactive Zone. Oasis’ studio manager Chris BoydLeslie explained: “The biggest challenge we faced was that we were only rebranding these areas for the duration of that event, and needed to return each of them to their former state afterwards. This would normally be quite a simple project, however, both the suite and the trailer had existing graphics and we had to apply the Adidas vinyls over these and then remove them without leaving a trace.”

Tonteria The first launch of Do Not Disturb T*H*U*R*S*D*A*Y*S at what is now the number 1 hotspot in Kensington and Chelsea, Guy Pelly and Marc Burton's exclusive Mexicanthemed tequila-bar Tonteria, might be one of the most successful club night launches in the last 10 years in London. The humble Mexican hole in the wall Tonteria has attracted royalty, society, celebrity, and rock n' roll figures including Prince William, Prince Harry, Pippa Middleton, Axyl Rose of Guns n Roses, Ed Sheeran, Nicole Scherzinger, The Pussycat Dolls, James Blunt, Tyson Beckford, APL of the Black Eyed Peas and others. Not only was there the most deliciously sensational and controversial erotic video (directed, written, and cast by PR Director Jessica Patterson in just one day) "Do Not Disturb Tonteria" which was banned from YouTube after less than 8 minutes of being live (which was later put back onto Vimeo and went viral! It has now had an astounding 53,000 views in the last few weeks). You can check it out here: https://vimeo.com/73447312 But there was also a queue for the launch party which went around the block of Rag and Bone and up Sloane Street. A shocking number of 600+ people were turned away at the door, including cast members of Made in Chelsea and some very important fashion personas (not be disclosed).
16
Elizabeth Murdoch and Ben Goldsmith even decided to pop by on the launch night to watch the racy burlesque duo The Sweet Harlots perform their hot wax lesbian-esque performance. Guy Pelly and his young society friends danced away with super hot catwalk models in Dolci Follie lingerie. Dancers were wearing neon latex outfits designed based on the film "The 5th Element". Even Bang & Olufsen sponsored the most talked about party with a massive flat screen which played the erotic art house style film on loop whilst guests dipped their fingers into Artisan du Chocolate chocolates topped o by a red Christian Loubotin chocolate shoe. Do Not Disturb T*H*U*R*S*D*A*Y*S has become a brand in itself and it's epic success has taken it global! In 2014, Do Not Disturb-themed nights at Tonteria are going to the likes of Paris, St Tropez, Monaco, and Cannes. TonteMania M*O*N*D*A*Y*S was launched thereafter in October 2013 with a WWF wrestling theme with Lucha Libra wrestlers putting on a wrestlemania show in the middle of the club with sta in wrestling and superhero outfits. In 2014, Tonteria partner Marc Burton has written a whole chapter about his business strategy on Tonteria in the upcoming Steve Forbes book with 30 key entrepreneurs. Seven Year Aged Golden Rum with Canary Island Honey- Arehucas Ron Miel Guanche Honey Rum The Arehucas Distillery was founded in 1884 in the village of Arucas on the island of Gran Canaria. With 130 years heritage, it is one of the oldest Rum distilleries in Europe, with a vast rum cellar containing over 6,000 American red oak barrels. Arehucas offer a wide range of over twenty different products from 1 year old white and gold mixing Rums, several different Liqueurs to their 7, 12 and 20 year old aged golden Rums. One of the most unique and popular lines is Arehucas Ron Miel Guanche Honey Rum. Arehucas take their 7 year Golden Rum and expertly blend it with local Canary Island honey. In the process it mellows from 40% to 20% ABV. With the addition of the honey and it’s natural sweetness, Arehucas Ron Miel Honey Rum has an almost liqueur quality, also benefiting from the smoothness and depth of flavour from the 7 year Golden Rum, resulting in a unique flavour profile like no other rum currently on the market. Traditionally drunk as a digestif, Arehucas Honey Rum works just as well sipped neat, over ice with an equal twist of lemon and lime, drizzled into the bottom of a flute then covered with Prosecco, Cava or Champagne for a delightful twist on a Bellini or included in a premium cocktail to add sweetness and the smooth flavour of an aged seven year golden rum. For those keen to avoid processed sugar, it is wonderful when used in a Mojito, though I suggest you’ll need to add some Arehucas Carta Oro or Arehucas Ron 7 to get a bit more of a ‘kick’.

What’s more, it is designed to make energy drinks work harder for the on-trade. It offers tasteful stimulating qualities that enhance, not overpower, the drinking occasion. The taurine-free, sugar-free recipe having over 30% less caffeine per 100ml than the market leader, and comes in the perfect-serve 150ml can – minimizing waste and providing an all-night glow rather than a super-charged experience. Raspberry & Orris is a lively fusion of fresh raspberry flavour, enhanced with notes of orris from the iris
flower, giving Gloworm a delicate floral twist that’s vibrant with vodka. Cucumber & Apple is a scintillating union of crisp, green apple flavour, balanced with essence of freshly-sliced cucumber. Delicious with gin. Pear, Spice & Lime is a spirited blend of sweet pear and ginger flavours, with a touch of warm spice. Rounded off with essence of lime. Rum is its rightful partner. Ginger & Lemongrass is a quirky mix of spicy ginger extract and the subtle flavour of lemongrass. Enchanted with essence of lime it’s a perfect companion with bourbon. Gloworm comes from the team that brought Boost Drinks to market just 12 years ago. Led by its founder and MD Simon Gray and his expert team, Boost is now a leading brand in the energy drink market, serving independent retailers in the UK along with exporting to a wide variety of countries worldwide and an annual turnover of £25 million. Gray is now set to turn his expert eye to the on-trade, launching Gloworm to the mixer market, where it is no secret bars are ready for some new stimulation, and Gloworm is serious about re-energising the mixer market, by offering a tasteful alternative to the current market leaders.

A uniquely smooth but strong, rich and nectarous coffee with a clean taste and medium body, Alma de Cuba is presented in 1kg bags (whole beans). Up until the 1950s, Cuba was the world's biggest coffee exporter, known for strong but smooth highend beans. The mountains of Cuba's oriente region are the ideal altitude for shade-grown mountain coffee, while breezes from the Caribbean cool the coffee 'cherries' slowing their development and allowing subtler flavours to mature. However, production tailed off after the revolution and the best beans have tended to be shipped to the quality conscious Japanese market, where demand for Cuban coffee is high.

mountain coffee farmers, providing $4m in support to provide them with the tools they need to help reestablish Cuba’s coffee crop. Alma de Cuba will obtain a steadily increasing supply of top quality Cuban coffee for sale globally. It will also develop micro-regional coffees to sell under the Alma de Cuba brand and as green beans to coffee roasters. What’s more, Alma de Cuba also breaks new ground by being the first single-origin coffee to be roasted, packed and branded for sale primarily through e-commerce. High-end coffees, such as Blue Mountain, are usually sold only as green beans to specialist roasters. Alma de Cuba MD and former Tory Treasury Minister, Phillip Oppenheim says: “The launch of our consumer e-commerce platform last November has generated strong interest from the foodservice sector. Gourmet coffee is rapidly growing globally and Cuba has an appeal all of its own, so we have a product and strategy very much in tune with the times – along with eye catching point of sale materials. Consumers are much more discerning when it comes to good quality coffee with provenance, and it is imperative that foodservice can deliver on this.”

With exceptional suction and powerful brush action, it offers a thorough, professional quality one pass pick-up. The DART features S-Class filtration, an onboard hose, a crevice nozzle, 4-level height adjustment and auto shut-off. Available in two brush widths – 31cm and 37cm – the DART weighs in at just 6.7kg and 6.9kg respectively. SEBO’s UHS polisher is an essential add-on to the Dart vacuum cleaner; this can restore and keep hard floors looking super sleek. The polisher is embedded with

Another option is the SEBO BS 36 and BS 46 Comfort upright vacuum cleaners which provide superior performance, outstanding reliability and are easy to maintain. The flatto-the-floor design and telescopic tube system add to the overall cleaning flexibility while the electronic guidance system advises the correct brush height, will warn when the brush strip is worn out and will switch off the brush motor in the case of an obstruction to the brush; the motor also turns off when the machines are upright. Finally, the Professional D8 cylinder machine has been superbly engineered and offers exceptional performance combined with an ergonomic design, large capacity and quiet, economic operation. The SEBO kombi multifloor cleaning head has a double-jointed neck for easy movement while the AirBelt bumper protects walls and furniture from marking and damage. James Latham has added four innovative new surface materials to its stand at this year’s Surface Design Show which are bound to create plenty of interest among Architects and Interior Designers.

LATHAMS’ SET TO SPARKLE AT SURFACE DESIGN SHOW
The extensive Shinnoki 2.0 range is supplied in designs which are completely in tune with current design trends and includes matching real wood and ABS edge banding. The 17 designs are also supplied in separate three-ply veneer sheets, perfect for curved surfaces, doors or other interior requirements.
Mirror Gloss Lathams’ is now offering Kronospan’s Mirror Gloss range, which pushes the boundaries of depth and definition, colour and reflective gloss. Mirror Gloss is produced using first class particleboard and high quality melamine film, achieving a gloss level of 140 points for decorative use in the furniture industry and interior design. The new range comprises 20 highly durable, scratch resistant, light and colorfast decors that include 14 sparkling gloss colours, four wood grains and two fantasy decors. The perfect application for Mirror Gloss MFC is fine domestic spaces, home and office furnishings, kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as luxury retailing and shop fitting. Natural Touch Another Kronospan product, Natural Touch is the first ‘embossedin-register’ melamine board where the grain texture precisely matches the surface finish. Now, the authentic look and feel of real timber - the graining, the subtle variations of shade and tone - is accessible on almost any project. Natural Touch is pre-finished, extremely durable, easy to work with and offers consistency in both colour and grain. This means that architects, interior designers, contractors and furniture makers can now achieve an authentic rustic realism using melamine. With Natural Touch, the applications are almost limitless. It can be used for cladding walls, building furniture, creating fixtures as well as making striking punctuations to spaces and surfaces and the versatility of this product has made it particularly popular within the shop fitting and hospitality sectors. Shinnoki 2.0 Shinnoki 2.0 is a range of ‘ready-to-use’ veneered panels that are supplied already stained and lacquered, requiring no further finishing. With Shinnoki 2.0, the veneer is applied to an MDF base, rendering the panels sturdy and easy to use. In addition, the panels are produced in both a single or double sided finish, with the first having a melamine faced-reverse. Veneers are mismatched, but stained and textured to create a consistent finish that shows the natural aspects and beauty of the species.

furniture, flooring & interiors
An innovative product - which is also incredibly easy to process - Dendrolight gives extra lightness and stability to natural solid wood and is manufactured entirely from renewable materials. The panels are produced to be combined with any surface layer, offering design possibilities that were previously unfeasible. The key feature of the product lies in the unique manufacturing process. Its middle-layer is made of Spruce or Pine which is glued together at perpendicular angles and sliced into layers that can be surfaced with solid wood, plywood and MDF. James Latham will also be showcasing some of its already established premium surface products including; Allure real stone laminate, Valchromat coloured fireboard, in which the colour runs through the entire board, Nevamar, high pressure laminate, Accoya, the world’s leading high technology, long life wood, UPM Lifecycle, a hard wearing, high friction and splinterfree composite decking, manufactured mainly from recycled materials. UPM GRADA, a new thermoformable wood material for the form pressing industry as well as HI-MACS® solid surface, a highly versatile and extremely durable material which can be easily machined and thermoformed to almost any 3D-shape imaginable. Chris Sutton, director of James Latham commented, “We are really looking forward to this year’s Surface Design Show as it’s a great platform to showcase what is one of the UK’s widest ranges of innovative surface solutions.” He added, “We have a history and expertise in bringing new and innovative products to the UK market and I’m certain that these latest additions will have a big impact within the A&D sector.”

Star Pubs & Bars believes that based on its experience many other licensees may well be paying business rates that are too high. Adds Jowsey, “With business rates accounting for an increasing percentage of operating costs and affecting the bills faced by licensees in other areas such as the Late Night Levy and Sky charges, it is vital that licensees check if they have grounds for an appeal.”

The Horseshoe, Sywell, Northampton Eve Jackson, licensee of the Horseshoe in Sywell for 15 years, was delighted to receive a 27% reduction in the rateable value of her pub saving her £5,500 a year thanks to Star Pubs & Bars’ business rates appeal scheme. Eve had been receiving transitional relief on her business rates to soften the impact of a big hike in her bills in 2010. When the relief came to an end earlier last year, she found her business rates had soared by around £10,000 a year. “I was shocked, they were astronomical and did not reflect our trade,” says Eve who decided to get them reviewed. A lovely traditional pub used by a wide range of the community from business people to families, the Horseshoe is known for its good quality home cooked food, excellent service and beautiful garden. Although the Horseshoe is a very popular pub, the opening of new food businesses nearby since Eve’s last business rate’s valuation had impacted on her trade.
STAR PUBS & BARS LODGES BUSINESS RATES APPEALS FOR A TENTH OF ITS ESTATE Star Pubs & Bars is lodging business rates appeals for 136 of the pub in its 1300 strong estate in the first quarter of 2014 on the basis of an external material change of circumstances.
“While we welcome the changes
announced by the Chancellor to business rates last year including the commitment to eliminate the backlog in outstanding reviews, we believe a root and branch Appeals will be made by chartered reform of the system is needed surveyors Gerald Eve who together with Star Pubs & Bars undertake a biannual review of the company’s pubs to see if lessees could be eligible for business rates cuts. Star Pubs & Bars has made 355 such appeals since 2010 with a success rate of over 40%, generating average savings of nearly £2,500 a year for lessees. The company has a further 196 appeals outstanding, a quarter of which have gone past their target date for review by valuation officers.
38
”
says Chris Jowsey, Star Pubs & Bars trading director. “Current rateable values are based on how pubs were performing in the boom time of April 2008 before the downturn. However, only those pubs which have seen an external material change of circumstances can appeal their rates, everyone else has to wait until 2017. This puts an unfair tax burden on pub operators who should be able to appeal when their turnover is materially reduced for any reason.”
Using the services of Gerald Eve, Eve was able to demonstrate the effect of the changes in the local area to secure a reduction in her business rates. “I’m thrilled. The Horseshoe is doing brilliantly but at the end of the day we are a small business and like any other small business we have to watch our overheads if we want to thrive.” Adds Eve, “ I take the same approach with other costs such as energy bills to ensure I am not paying over the odds, I would urge any other small business owner to do the same, it’s the only way to have a successful, sustainable business.”

ANGELIC SEES SALES RISE FOLLOWING NELSON BACKBAR INSTALLATION With bar staff having to turn their backs to customers while accessing drinks, and with no defined workstations, the backbar serving Islington’s Angelic pub needed addressing. Shaun Orchard, the general manager, had already commissioned a bar carcass so, in line with the pub’s policy, he put the refit out to tender. The brief was clear – everything had to tie in with the new carcass, quality had to be good as the pub is very busy, as many workstations as possible needed to be created and, finally, the installation needed to be fast. Nelson Catering Equipment won the tender. “Quite simply, they were the only contender that quoted for what I’d asked for,” explains Shaun. “Everybody else, to varying degrees, used the tender as an opportunity to upsell!” Once the layout and the equipment specifications were agreed, Nelson set to work, meeting with the builders and architect responsible for the carcass and services so that all sensitive measurements and specifications could be checked and that installation could be co-ordinated. The various elements, including the IMC equipment that Shaun wanted, along with all the other equipment, accessories and shelving, were amassed by Nelson and held in their warehouse so that every last item could be checked prior to taking to site in one load.
Tel: 020 8993 6198 | Web: www.nelsonwash.co.uk Installation took just two days (including disassembly of the old bar). There are now three workstations and two Nelson Advantage glasswashers but the clever design allows several people to work at once. Currently there are five but there is ample space for more. “This was a really good experience,” sums up Shaun. “I enjoyed every step of the planning and installation and am delighted that we found a company who genuinely listens to what their customers ask for. Amazingly, our sales and productivity saw a significant increase as soon as the work was completed!”

Simply place the carafe and cups in the freezer for a few hours, pour in your favourite spirits, wait a few minutes for the chill to spread, and enjoy. In the winter months, the soapstone set can also be used to keep cold weather at bay. Simply heat the pieces in the microwave or oven for a warming cup of sake to keep you cosy and chill-free. With smooth, polished surfaces and hand-etched lines, the pieces are both aesthetically pleasing and functional as they provide a gripping surface. Teroforma works with a collective of designers and manufacturers: the set is designed by Dana D’Amico of New York in partnership with Amit Stoneworks of India. An inspiring partnership combining Dana’s effortless simplicity and respect for both material and form with Amit’s honestly derived stonework, originating in the central Indian city of Agre.
Moët & Chandon Launches 2004 Vintage Rosé Moët & Chandon has released its 2004 Grand Vintage Rosé, which Cellarmaster Benoît Gouez describes as “voluptuous and spirited, with black fruits, warm spice, a slightly tannic structure and subtle tanginess.” This is the 39th Grand Vintage Rosé to be released by Moët & Chandon since 1920. The Champagne is an assemblage of 45% Pinot Noir (of which 22% was red wine), 31% Chardonnay and 24% Pinot Meunier. Dosage is kept low at 5g/l, and the wine was aged on the lees in the House’s cellars for seven years, with a minimum of six months bottle age after disgorgement. “The 2004 harvest was characterized by plentiful, healthy and beautifully ripe grapes,” says Gouez. “The weather was unexpectedly mild throughout the growing season: after a somewhat dry spring the vines flourished in the early summer rains and subsequent hot sunny weather. Very warm temperatures later in the season created the ideal conditions for a harvest which was both extremely abundant and at the perfect stage of ripeness.” Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Rosé 2004: RRP £64.80
