MWA Technology set to provide an energy boost for Sustainability Live 2014
involvement “Our in Ofgem will help us influence the future direction of the scheme and iron out any initial issues.
”
The sustainable use of energy will be one of the key themes of 2014, as both the domestic and commercial market look to strike the right balance between going green and saving money. That is the message from Martin Wardell, the Managing Director and driving force of one of the UK’s largest independent metering specialists. At the helm of Birmingham-based MWA Technology, the former Chemical Engineer is well placed to pick out industry trends and believes the ongoing desire for greener and more cost effective energy has to start with being able to measure how your home, office or factory is performing. “We all understand the need to move towards more sustainable energy, but you can’t just jump on the bandwagon without understanding how you can get the best results,” explained Martin, who started the business from his home in 1993.
For further information, please visit www.mwatechnology.com or contact 0121 327 7771
“Getting the right meter put in place to measure oil, gas, water, steam and energy is essential and we pride ourselves on making sure our technical experts get under the skin of our clients and provide the right solutions.” He continued: “£500,000 has been spent on creating a state-of-the-art logistics warehouse and a network of approved suppliers, including industry-leading brands like Kamstrup, Elster, Common, Diehl, Arad and Itron.”
12|
MWA Technology, which employs 28 people at its
facility on the Wharton Street Industrial Estate, will be showcasing its products and services at Sustainability Live 2014. Technical experts will be on hand to discuss metering problems and issues, whether it is a domestic diaphragm meter or the commercial applications of automatic meter reading, data logging and installation commissioning. The company will also be promoting the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), a Government programme aimed at financially incentivising home owners, businesses and organisations to use renewable energy systems as a way of heating their properties. Martin continued: “We have been at the forefront of RHI and all of our technicians are trained in installation and helping our clients get the best out of it. “Our involvement in Ofgem will help us influence the future direction of the scheme and iron out any initial issues.” MWA Technology, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2013, currently supplies electric, gas, oil, water and energy meters to distributors, contractors, OEMs and energy monitoring professionals across the UK. A significant investment programme in specialist testing equipment has seen the company achieve record sales of £4m and create five new positions across the business.

The Exchange will feature 21 free practical talks packed full of advice, new innovations and case studies for maintenance professionals, engineers, plant and asset managers to learn from. For instance energy consumption is a major industry issue and Jit Patel, Technical Sales Manager at Fluke UK, will explain how companies can reduce energy costs by up to 20% by identifying and quantifying energy waste. Managers who rely on modern maintenance software systems will be interested in the presentation by John Atkinson, Technical Director, Russell Sion, Managing Director and Toby Smith, Software Director at C-Cubed. They will examine how to make valuable data readily accessible to all those who are permitted access to it, whilst keeping those who are not, out of the loop. The presentation will raise questions about data security and is expected to get people discussing the future direction of this technology. Dave Anderson, Company Director at Score Diagnostics Ltd, will focus on the importance of valve condition monitoring, with a look at the equipment, techniques and systems available. As part of this he will outline how to move away from reactive maintenance and towards a more proactive approach, in line with the new Asset Integrity Management Standard. In theory Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) are powerful, for instance allowing companies to determine which machines require maintenance and which storerooms contain the spare parts needed. Yet up to 80% of CMMS implementations fail to meet expectations in the Implementation Account Manager at eMaint Enterprises, will explain the Top 10 Keys to Success in CMMS Implementation. premature failure on their pumping systems due to high operational demands. Engineering
is an integral part of the UK economy – a diverse, successful and exciting sector. Findings from Engineering UK 2014: the state of engineering show that 5.4 million people are currently employed across more than 565,000 UK engineering enterprises. The sector generates £1.1 trillion in turnover - almost 25% of the turnover for all UK enterprises and over three times the size of the retail sector. Engineering companies will have 2.74 million job openings from 2010 – 2020, of which 1.86 million will require engineering skills. However, if we are to rebalance the economy the UK will need almost double the number of engineering graduates with foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications. Currently there are around 46,000 per year and the UK is predicted to need around 87,000 in 2020. A large increase in the number of apprentices is also needed, from 27,000 to around 69,000. Over the course of this decade, those with engineering skills and qualifications will be well placed to enter exciting and rewarding careers. To ensure that young people benefit from this burgeoning and varied industry, it is essential that they receive careers information and guidance that explains the benefits of engineering careers from an early age. Careers guidance professionals play a vital role in ensuring young people understand the opportunities open to them and the subject choices needed in order to take advantage of them. Benefits of a career in engineering Engineers work on complex, challenging and rewarding projects that make a difference on a global scale. Whatever an individual’s interests, it’s likely there’s a sector that’s right for them. If they’re fanatical about cars, automotive engineering could be for them or if they’re interested in mobile or computer technology they can choose electronic engineering, for example. An engineering career is financially rewarding as well. The starting salary for engineering graduates is a fifth more than the average for all gradate starting salaries at £26,019. Research suggests that engineering graduates will earn 25% more in their working lifetime than the average graduate (adding up to over £210,000). There are routes into the profession for non-graduates at a variety of levels too and engineering technicians, with an average salary of £32,647 top the league of technician salaries. Advanced/ Modern Apprenticeships are an expanding and popular route into engineering, combining study with employment to achieve technical certificates. Students can also move into the industry after studying a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, HND or Advanced Diploma. Raising awareness at a young age In order to address the skills deficit we need to improve awareness about engineering and what engineers do among pupils, their teachers and parents. We need to enable young people to make informed choices about their future so that they choose GCSEs and A-levels that enable them to keep open a route into an engineering career. It is crucial that all 11-14 year olds receive consistent careers information, advice and guidance. They should also be able to gain practical experience of the engineering workplace. It is important that young people understand the reality of contemporary careers in engineering, the diverse routes into the profession and the financial benefits. EngineeringUK runs programmes to meet these challenges head-on. Tomorrow’s Engineers (www.tomorrowsengineers.org.uk) Tomorrow’s Engineers is a careers programme led by EngineeringUK and the Royal Academy of Engineering, delivered through a broad
22|
partnership between business and industry, the engineering profession, activity delivery organisations and schools. The programme brings engineering to 11-14 year olds in schools that might not otherwise be involved in the subject through lively, educational hands-on activities and accurate, engaging careers resources. The Tomorrow’s Engineers website hosts a wealth of resources and careers information. Careers professionals, teachers, students and parents are free to download or order engineering information leaflets, posters, postcards and more. These are developed especially for 11-14 year olds with the support of a number of engineering and science institutions. They support the national curriculum, cover regional variations and promote the broad range of routes into engineering. The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair (www.thebigbangfair.co.uk) The Big Bang Fair is the UK’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people (primarily aged 7-19). Every year, for free, visitors can meet inspiring engineers and scientists from around 200 organisations, large and small, public, private and voluntary along with aspiring future scientists and engineers, finalists in the National Science + Engineering Competition. The Big Bang Fair allows young people, teachers and parents to see for themselves how exciting science and engineering careers can be in a real-world setting through lively hands-on stands, workshops and shows. The 2014 fair, which takes place at The NEC in Birmingham on 13 – 16 March, is open for bookings now. The Big Bang Near Me is a growing programme of events taking place throughout the year and around the country. These include larger events hosting heats of the National Science + Engineering Competition as well as more local events. These programmes have a positive impact on public perception of engineering. 29% of all 12-16 year-olds think a career in engineering is desirable. However, 54% of secondary school students who attended The Big Bang Fair and 45% of students who took part in the Tomorrow’s Engineers programme think a career in engineering is desirable. The engineering sector has a crucial role to play in delivering economic growth for the UK, in building our capacity to compete in a rapidly growing global market and in shaping our ability to cope with mounting pressure on the world’s resources and so create a wide variety of careers for the next generation. To achieve this it is essential that we recognise the importance of those delivering careers guidance in schools and that we support them in providing robust, consistent and joined-up careers engagement. 2013 has been a year of real progress for Britain’s oil and gas industry with capital investment at an all-time high of £13.5 billion. This investment in turn leads to strong economic contributions to our country, with £6.5 billion in tax on production paid in 2012/13, in addition to sustaining 450,000 jobs across the UK.
our sector – in the case of safety, we must remain ever vigilant; there is never room for complacency. Process safety is an area which is, and must, remain at the top of our agenda. Reducing the number and size of hydrocarbon releases continues to be a top priority for the oil and gas sector as part of the industry’s absolute commitment to continually improving process safety. In my opinion, no other industry its safety performance through communication, cooperation, workforce engagement and exceptional leadership. Over the last three years the industry, through focused and 48% reduction in numbers of hydrocarbon releases. However, despite absolute determination to make further reductions, the number of releases over the last six months appears to be on the increase. The industry remains dedicated to understanding the underlying causes for this and are committed to work together with all stakeholders to reverse this. Innovation is also playing its part.
