TechModern® Presses provide Stamping; Hydroforming; Deep Drawing and the operations that metal forming presses will need to do in todays and in Tomorrow’s World.
TRS Engineering Services Ltd in the West Midlands of England have designed and developed just such presses which incorporate proven technology and methodology with innovation to satisfy the future needs and adaptability. The bespoke presses are of a modular design, comprising a flat pack framework which can be readily transported to their destinations on low loader trailers and assembled on site. They are floor mounted without the need of pit foundations and can be assembled, together with their computer control systems, commissioned and maintained at floor level. The computer controlling systems are programmed on board and can, in addition to the operating command sequencing, include the component design and its forming simulation. For product support it can be equipped with condition monitoring - worldwide. A speciality of these presses is their Hydroforming capability to utilise fluid pressure in place of a punch to form sheet metal or tubular blanks into complex shapes. This enables the manufacture of components with improved properties and lower costs compared with conventional manufacturing techniques.

Fresh food SME doubles output with first time automation An SME producing fresh vegetarian foods has doubled its capacity since semi-automating its production facility with Endoline Machinery. Putting automation down to ‘simple arithmetic’ the owner of Ramona’s Kitchen – which churns out 50 tonnes of Mediterranean inspired produce a month - is now anticipating a return on her investment within 12 months and is encouraging other SME’s to jump on the automation bandwagon. Business owner Ramona Hazan established Ramona’s Kitchen 11 years ago and in addition to producing fresh foods, including falafel and houmous, for wholesalers and food service companies, produces the ‘Me Too!’ range of dips and salads for the UK’s leading supermarkets. A family run business, Ramona’s Kitchen employs 8 people at its North London based factory. “All of our products are freshly prepared daily and a lot of hands are needed in the kitchen.” Explains Ramona, “However up to 2 workers were spending a full 8 hour shift just forming boxes ready for filling – which was an inefficient use of time and a bottleneck in our production.” Once formed the boxes were stacked in a corner, however this also came with problems as the boxes were often damaged with the potential for dust settling, a frequent issue with pre-erected cases. It was at this point Ramona concluded that automating the erecting and sealing of boxes was a ‘no brainer’. After researching different companies Ramona commissioned Endoline Machinery to install a semiautomatic case erector and sealer due to, according to Ramona, their “service offering and ability to meet my needs exactly.” Now, three months in, the new line has helped Ramona’s Kitchen double their capacity, with just one or two workers manning the entire packing line. The produce is made within a high care room and immediately run, via a conveyor belt, out to a packing station. Here a manual worker forms the cases on a case former which automatically folds the lower flaps and securely holds the

open case to allow packing to take place. The filled boxes are then pushed by the operator, straight through the Endoline case sealer which simultaneously tapes both the bottom and the top of the box before being pushed through to a second high care storage room, ready for delivery. All of this is achieved within just one minute. The production line is now consistently flowing with box damage eliminated – with a daily output of 500 boxes per day, a 100% increase. In addition Ramona’s Kitchen pack up to 6 different box sizes but the Endoline systems are easily adjustable to cope with the size changes. Automating for the first time as an SME was, admits Ramona, a daunting process as she explains: “Making the investment was initially scary but at the same time important to make that plunge as I realised the efficiencies which could be gained - basically it comes down to simple arithmetic! I am now in a position where I have doubled my capacity and am anticipating a return on my investment within 12 months.” As a manufacturer of high spec end of line packing equipment, Endoline Machinery regularly supply global blue-chip companies with fully automated systems, however they have recently launched entry level, semiautomatic systems specifically suited to SME’s who look for quality machines – without the price tag. Andrew Yates, Sales Director for Endoline Machinery, comments: “With our full range of systems we can offer the complete package to any customer – meeting their specification and budget. It also enables us to ‘hand hold’ our customers throughout the automation process, which we have discovered is very important to SME’s” Flexibility for SME’s is also important, as Ramona comments: “Investing in these systems has allowed me to grow the business; however it was important that the machines also offered me longevity with the ability to handle a wide variety of box sizes if required.”

WILLIAMS & OAKEY’S LEAP OF FAITH IN PSL DATATACK MORE THAN REPAYS ITSELF Some sub contractors still use DOS based production management software to manage shop floor manufacturing and assembly. As this platform is no longer supported, it has become increasingly difficult to rely upon its continued use. This was the situation faced by Williams & Oakey, and now having made the successful transition to Windows based PSL Datatrack production management and business administration software, the company has been delighted with the results. Williams & Oakey’s Materials & IT Manager Martin Presley says, “We had become too comfortable with the old DOS system and there were inherent risks in trying to continue. We had a presentation from PSL Datatrack and also visited an existing customer. That convinced us to go with PSL. Their software is flexible, modular and it would be easily adaptable to our specific business model.”
Williams & Oakey supplies high quality machined parts and fabrications to customers in many industries. The emphasis has been on offering a one stop shop, engaged not only in precision CNC machining, but also pre-treatment and finishing. Quality standards are essential and with its ISO9001 accreditation, the company provides its services to many companies where traceability is a prerequisite. Controlling the processes through the factory had always been undertaken using the bespoke DOS system. Having worked with it for many years, there were worries about the transition to the Windows based PSL Datatrack system including the potential loss of manufacturing data, but making the leap of faith was the right decision. Williams & Oakey took advantage of the modularity of PSL Datatrack software and invested initially in the core modules under a single user licence. Supported by PSL Datatrack, Martin trained in-house all the company’s shop floor and office staff on how to use the software. Today, there are two Datatrack stations where operators clock in and out as well as log all the required information about every order that passes through – essential for traceability. Following the initial success, Williams & Oakey added extra modues and user licences to give more access to staff and even closer control of the engineering process. There are also plans to continue to expand on what PSL Datatrack can offer, such as setting up a complete database of customer engineering drawings under document management. Sliding gate valves provide accurate, fast, and economical control of liquid, steam, and gaseous media. Starting immediately, sliding gate valves are also manufactured in the following special materials: • Hastelloy • Monel • Titanium • 1.4539 stainless steel • Duplex steel This means the advantages of these control and stop valves can also be utilized for processes with critical, aggressive, and highly corrosive media. Sliding gate valves in these special materials are available in finely graduated nominal sizes ranging from DN15 to DN250. Valves built according to this design principle are extremely short and compact so that they have very low weights, it can be just 10% in comparison to traditional globe valves. Since the valve body is manufactured from barstock material, significantly less material is used, especially in the case of special materials, which is then naturally reflected in their price. Altogether, sliding gate valves not only offer advantages for the process, but also an enormous potential for savings due to their low life cycle costs, and they can now be used in processes with very critical media as well.

New VPI sets new standard for reliable position detection of multi turn valves In January Netherlocks Safety Systems launched its next generation Valve Position Indicators for manual multi turn valves: the VPI A-series and S-series. With these new models, Netherlocks offers a highly accurate and reliable alternative for existing solutions and competing position indicators in the market. For detecting the open and closed position of manual quarter turn valves, many switch boxes and related products are readily available. However
for manual hand wheel operated valves, operating companies still often create their own solutions with custom made bracketing and proximity switches (image below). Commonly such constructions are vulnerable to external impact and weather conditions. Also, since the sensors are not contained, they’re easy to tamper with by operating personnel. The Netherlocks Valve Position Indicator (VPI) now offers an accurate and reliable, off the shelf solution
that fits any type of multi-turn valve (image above). Its mechanical counting mechanism and sensors are protected by an aluminium (A-series) or AISI 316 (S-series) housing. Various standard sensors can be applied to detect the end positions of the counting mechanism and transfer that information directly to the control room, giving a real time valve position signal to the DCS. VPI is an intrinsically safe, Atex and IECEx-certified product, approved for use in Zone 1 classified areas. Its LED lights give the operator in the field a direct indication of the valve position that is transferred to the control room. In close cooperation with various renowned international parties, Netherlocks has also created the possibility to transfer the position signal via a wireless transmitter. In anticipation of the formal launch, various prominent end-users in the Oil & Gas industry already ordered their first pieces, largely based on their positive experiences with previous editions of Netherlocks position indication solutions, giving the market introduction of the newly released models a head start.

new resin bonded grinding wheel for use in the Tool and Cutter grinding market has recently been added to the well established range of MASTER® branded products. It is predominantly aimed at the manual machine market where carbide and steel cutting tools are re-sharpened by hand. This market was once dominated by a particular high performance, dry grinding bond type that has since been discontinued. Up until now, there has been no equivalent wheel on the market at a similar performance and price level. MACH 2016 Sold Out! Excitement levels are building as April approaches and the doors open on MACH 2016, the UK’s premier manufacturing technologies event. The NEC, Birmingham will host the exhibition from 11th – 15th April and hopes are high that the 2016 show will surpass the double award winning 2014 exhibition. Countdown continues to London infrastructure shows There are just a few weeks to go until this year’s biggest infrastructure event opens its doors in London. Infrarail 2016, the exhibition for equipment products and services for railway infrastructure, and the CITE - Civil Infrastructure & Technology Exhibition 2016, focusing on products and services needed for transport projects, utilities, communications and energy networks, take place at ExCeL London in the capital’s Docklands from 12 to 14 April. Registration for free entry to both events is open via the show websites – www.infrarail.com and www.cite-uk. com. These feature links providing the quickest way to register to attend both exhibitions plus the wide range of associated activities taking place as part of them. Entry to one event also provides access to the other. Online registration closes at midnight on 11 April. For visitors who register on arrival at ExCeL London, a £20 entry fee will be payable. Improving the value of food waste Matt Hale, International Sales Manager for HRS Heat Exchangers, explains how innovations in heating, pasteurisation and concentration technology can help food waste AD operators to thrive in the face of dwindling renewable energy subsidies.
T
he past five years have seen an unprecedented growth in Britain’s anaerobic digestion (AD) sector, with the number of operational plants increasing by over 600 per cent outside of the water sector*. Alongside facilities treating sewage and agricultural feedstocks, there are now 78 AD plants treating a variety of food wastes, including on-site food and drink processing residues, local authority waste, and commercial and industrial waste**. It’s easy to see why food waste AD has proved so popular. Processing organic wastes through anaerobic digestion not only cuts greenhouse gas emissions by diverting waste from landfill, it generates homegrown renewable energy and produces a biofertiliser (digestate), rich in valuable nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.
Government’s assault on renewables However, recent government policy has failed to recognise these benefits. No sooner had the industry announced the UK’s 400th AD plant in July 2015, than the new Conservative government slammed on the brakes, removing both preaccreditation for the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) and AD’s exemption from the Climate Change Levy. Although DECC has recently confirmed its commitment to reintroduce pre-accreditation for the FIT scheme, its ambition remains startlingly low: government will provide support for a maximum of around 20 MW of additional AD capacity each year between 2016-19. This compares to an industry deployment of 48 MW in 2014 alone. Government’s assault on renewables, which some feel is paving the way for a zero-subsidy future, has also impacted the finance community and will undoubtedly make it more

Digestate concentration technology overview difficult for AD developers to attract funding. On top of this, some industry experts believe the UK AD industry has reached a ‘tipping point’, with food waste AD plant capacity outstripping available feedstock. And with England looking unlikely to follow Scotland and Wales in banning food waste from landfill any time soon, this situation is not expected to change in the near future. Faced with increasing competition, falling gate fees and diminishing incentives, it is therefore more important than ever that food waste AD plants are operated efficiently, with every aspect of the process optimised to ensure maximum return on investment. One area that many food waste AD operators are still missing out on is the potential extra income that could be made from the biofertiliser end product of the AD process – digestate. Dismissed as an afterthought by some in the past, today’s successful operators keep it firmly at the heart of their business. Efficient digestate pasteurisation In order for digestate to be a saleable commodity, it must be pasteurised to PAS 110 certification standards. This accreditation provides reassurance to growers that it is safe to be applied to land. The 3 Tank Batch Sludge Pasteuriser System from HRS Heat Exchangers achieves this using up to 70 per cent less energy than existing competitor technology. The system works on a three tank principle: while one tank is being filled, the second tank holds the digestate above 70°C, at the same time as the third tank is being emptied. Each process last one hour. Traditionally, systems that heat digestate in a tank use a heating jacket – a bit like waiting for a giant kettle to boil – and then dump the heat after it has served its original purpose. The HRS system, however, employs energy recovery and is typically two to three times more efficient. By transferring energy from the hotter (pasteurised) sludge to the colder (unpasteurised) sludge, energy consumption is reduced by up to 70 per cent, maximising heat which would have otherwise been wasted. install an additional heat source such as a biomass boiler, which could add hundreds of thousands of pounds to a project.
Reduced costs With developers looking to reduce costs in every area of their AD operation, today’s efficient pasteurisation systems offer reduced downtime and increased digestate production. The inner tube in the HRS system’s exchanger which carries the digestate is a unique corrugated design; unlike the smooth tubes used in alternative exchangers. This boosts heat transfer by creating extra turbulence and also helps reduce fouling – as the digestate travels around the system, it’s less likely to stick to the tube wall, downtime and maintenance, as well as increasing the system’s lifespan.
Traceability But perhaps the most important factor for any AD operator looking to purchase a new pasteurisation system is traceability. The ability to trace a batch of digestate back to its original feedstock consignment is invaluable in demonstrating accountability and providing peace of mind, and is an important feature of the HRS system, which uses the company’s in-house software to ensure its clients remain accountable and compliant with PAS 110 standards at all times.
Sustainability Reducing the liquid fraction can greatly help to overcome these issues. The Digestate Concentration System (DCS) from HRS superheats liquid digestate in a vacuum, increasing the dry matter typically from four per cent to 20 per cent and reducing the overall volume of digestate produced. This means that up to 60 per cent less storage capacity is needed and fewer lorry loads are required, helping curb a plant’s transportation costs and carbon footprint. The water removed by the process is then recovered and can be mixed with the AD feedstock, increasing the efficiency of the digester and reducing the overall amount of energy and water used.
Survival of the fittest
Flexible and adaptable With increased competition for feedstock among food waste AD operators, digestate stocks can fluctuate depending on the volume of feedstock being processed at the front end. It is therefore important that operators employ a pasteurisation system which is capable of running a continuous process even when stock levels fall. HRS’s addition of four level temperature probes – three in the bottom of each tank and one in the top – means the tanks can be filled to half capacities should the demand or flow drop off, allowing for continuous and flexible digestate production. Without these probes, the system would be put on a ‘go slow’ waiting for the tanks to fill, which would not only require more heat but would also incur the expense of slowing down production or shutting the system and restarting. It is also imperative that a pasteurisation system is tailored to meet an individual plant’s needs. AD operators are now increasingly demanding systems which offer a reduced footprint, scalability and a flexible lead-time; all of which are standard with HRS. *** Projected ‘low’ scenario, ADBA Policy Report, Nov 2015

Overcoming digestate storage issues Yet while heat exchanger and pasteurisation technology is helping food waste AD operators to create a quality digestate, the sheer volumes being produced can be difficult to manage. A typical 1.5 MW plant generates as much as 40,000 TPA of liquid digestate, bringing significant economic and logistical challenges associated with its storage and transportation. And as best practice dictates that digestate should not be applied to land all year round, digestate storage is a major consideration for AD operators. In fact, spreading digestate at the wrong time of year, when the crop is unable to take full advantage of its nutrients, reduces its value and risks polluting the environment.
The use of intelligent heat exchanger, pasteurisation and concentration technology could help food waste AD operators to recover nearly half the heat produced by their AD plant and assist them in producing a quality biofertiliser, at the same time as making cost and energy savings. Maximising the value of digestate will give AD operators the best chance of not only surviving, but thriving in the face of uncertain government subsidies.

Inspection kit that ticks the sustainable box There’s no getting away from the fact that food manufacturers have a lot on their plate right now, including how to balance being more cost efficient, productive and competitive with investing in more sustainable line equipment. Given that we live in a throwaway society, the big question is how can a manufacturer of metal detectors assist food producers to be more sustainable with their equipment purchasing decisions? As proverbs go, ‘Waste Not Want Not’ is one that resonates highly at Fortress Technology and this filters across our entire metal inspection range. One of the underpinning themes of the Save Food initiative is giving manufacturers access to more sustainable production systems and methods. That’s where we can help. With 90% of Fortress metal detectors sold to UK food factories, extending the lifespan of equipment and optimising ROI for our growing customer base is where we focus a large amount of our R&D efforts. In turn it means we can assist food factories to be leaner and act greener. Making sustainable equipment purchasing decisions Arguably, food waste is where the real sustainability agenda lies. It was good to see the recent report from the Environment Agency praising our food and drink sector for being more resource efficient and cutting down the amount of waste. False product rejects as a result of false metal detection readings can amount to £14,000 annually per production line. This is partly down to the way the magnetic field reacts to the product characteristics, especially in wet products, so the sensitivity of the detector head plays a big part. But I agree with Lord Smith that we must continue to strive for more improvements. Fortress recognises that for many manufacturers it can be challenging to demonstrate and quantify sustainability. Even the word itself means different things to different generations, from environmentally friendly to organic, or ethical or transparency. Another challenge is the split about what constitutes sustainability between consumers and

industry. This is in part due to the fact there are so many aspects to the agenda - from acting more eco-friendly by reducing energy consumption and your carbon footprint, to tackling the volume of food that ends up in landfill. Many larger EU businesses today are finding themselves under pressure from investors to provide hard evidence of sustainable actions. It means you can’t just claim to be sustainable; you have to prove and rubber stamp it. Not backward in coming forward A backward compatible offering might sound a bit retro. However, every one of our customers tells us that the ability to upgrade equipment with the very latest technology so it is ‘fit for purpose’ for years to come helps them to achieve their sustainability goals and save them significant money in one swoop. It was a real swing factor for Nutrition Group which ordered six Stealth metal detectors. For a new customer Fortress regards this as a sizeable order and a real vote of confidence for our sustainability proposition. Tim Edwards, Facilities Manager at Nutrition Group agrees: “The problem with a lot of equipment is that it can quickly become outdated, but Fortress says that it will guarantee to support its metal detectors, even if I call them up needing a part in 10 years’ time. That’s a big commitment.” Realistically, with the right maintenance, a well-built metal detector can run for 20+ years. Machinery innovation isn’t going to slow-up. There’s always going to be faster, more efficient and cutting edge technological solutions coming to market. But that doesn’t mean you need to prematurely bin your perfectly functional kit because it doesn’t comply with the latest retail inspection standards or regulations. A metal detector is big hunk of equipment, most with coils embedded in epoxy or even concrete, making it harder to reclaim and recycle components when it enters the waste stream. Legacy systems have a reputation for being expensive to maintain. But there are viable alternatives. Much of
this will be directed by your supplier, their R&D capabilities and experience, and willingness to look beyond the order list to invest in upgrades. A good example of this is when M&S revised its Codes of Practice in 2012. Within weeks Fortress issued the required software and safety feature upgrades, costing approximately 70% less than acquiring a brand new metal detector system. Also, I don’t know many suppliers willing to bolt their technology onto another’s. But it’s how the sector is evolving. Up to 15% of global equipment sold by our company is integrated into non-Fortress units. Customers value it because it optimises their ROI. There’s much to be said, from many environmental vantage points, about postponing replacement purchases of anything, not just metal detectors. If we can do our bit to keep what’s already made out of the waste stream and delay the additional environmental costs of making something new, in my view that’s responsible waste stewardship and a big tick for every manufacturer who is striving to achieve their sustainability goals. One giant leap for safety: AZM400 Schmersal presents new solenoid interlock for heavy safety doors at SPS IPC Drives trade fair At the SPS IPC Drives trade fair in November, the Schmersal Group presented an extension of its programme of solenoid interlocks. Characteristic properties of the AZM400 include the very high clamping force of 10,000 N, the bistable active principle and the electro-motorised locking pin. This means that the new range is also suitable for very large, motor-powered safety doors, e.g. from CNC processing centres. The combination of electronics and sensors represents a high level of availability from the userâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perspective as well as interesting additional functions with a very high level of safety. The fail-safe AZM 400 bolt interlock consists of a locking unit with sensor technology and a motor-driven locking bolt, along with an actuator that features an encoded RFID-tag and a locking hole with two permanent magnets in which the locking bolt engages. As soon as the lock-

ing bolt has reached sufficient depth, the guard system is considered to be safely locked. Here, the AZM400 reaches a clamping force of 10,000 N. By integrating RFID technology in the safety sensors, the coding level high is reached for the individually encoded versions in accordance with ISO 14119. Not only with the locking function but also the clamping function, the bolt lock achieves PL e and cat. 4 according to DIN EN ISO 13849-1 as well as SIL 3 according to IEC 61508. The high level of safety for the clamping function is attained among other ways by the two-channel unlocking signal. This ensures that the system is not unlocked unintentionally, for example, in the event of a cross connection. Uncontrolled access to hazard areas is thereby prevented in this way. The AZM400 is a bistable system, which maintains the last locked status of the interlock in the event of a power failure. Even with hazardous run-on movements, the safety door remains securely interlocked if the voltage supply should be interrupted.
The AZM400 makes unlocking against lateral forces of up to 300 N possible. In this way, interruptions in the production process are avoided and productivity of the machines and systems is increased. Thanks to the integrated safety-related sensor technology, the bolt position can be monitored and fault conditions identified. Consequently, the number of fault messages is reduced, which likewise contributes towards greater productivity. The new type of input circuit for actuation of the guard locking function makes it possible to connect the AZM400 to all common safety control systems. These safety control systems can be equipped both with P/P and P/N outputs. To do this, no different versions of the AZM400 are necessary.

New Health and Guidelines Huge Increase in Fines in England On 3 November 2015, the Sentencing Council published the new definitive guidelines along with supporting documents, including the response to the consultation for health and safety, corporate manslaughter and food safety and hygiene offences. The new guidelines will apply to organisations in England and Wales that are sentenced on or after 1 February 2016 (regardless of the date of the offence) and to all individual offenders aged 18 and over. The Sentencing Council believed that the new guidelines were required for a number of reasons, including: • Inconsistency in sentences being imposed by courts for these types of offences. • The fact that courts were often unfamiliar with these types of offences and needed guidance. • Concerns that the sentences being imposed were too low and failing to have any significant economic impact on the organisations on which they were imposed. • Failure to meet the requirements of sentencing set out in Section 164 of the Criminal Justice Act 2003, which states that fines must reflect the seriousness of the offence and take into account the financial circumstances of the offender. 64|
To assist the courts in imposing sentences for the various offences, the Sentencing Council has published a series of case studies that: • Consider the steps in the guidelines. • Consider the facts that should be taken into account at each of the key steps. • Confirm which range and starting point is appropriate. But they don’t actually recommend what fine should be imposed. The case study for organisations convicted of health and safety offences makes it clear that: 1. If there is a risk of death, harm should be category 1. If injury actually occurred, even if there was no death, as category 1 is already the highest, the Court should move up within the fine category range. 2. Any arguably negligent actions by an injured employee (the example in the case study being the decision to work on a dormer roof without the necessary scaffolding and protection) would not be relevant to sentencing as they would have been reasonably foreseeable to the employer.

Safety Sentencing Published and Wales Expected to Follow 3. Culpability would be high if the company failed to put in place measures that are recognised standards in the industry. 4. Steps taken to remedy the failings, acceptance of responsibility, a good health and safety record and a lack of previous convictions would all be mitigating factors. One of the key areas that still lacks clarity is how the courts should treat and define “very large organisations” (i.e. those organisations with a turnover or equivalent that very greatly exceeds the threshold for large organisations). In these instances, the new guidelines state that it may be necessary to move outside the suggested range to achieve a proportionate sentence. It is likely that the courts will utilise the environmental case of Thames Water (R. v Thames Water Utilities Ltd [2015] EWCA Crim 960 (CA (Crim Div)), where it was stated that very large companies who are involved in cases of serious [environmental] crime could face fines of up to 100% of the company’s pre-tax net profits – even if this results in fines of more than £100 million. Sentences will increase for offences sentenced after 1 February 2016. Organisations currently being prosecuted may therefore decide to enter guilty pleas simply to try to get their case sentenced before the new guidelines come into force.
What Does This Mean for You? It will be key for organisations sentenced after 1 February 2016 to try to demonstrate that culpability and the risk of harm in their case falls into the lower categories, and therefore into the lower ranges for fines. This will not be an easy task, as prosecutors will be doing their best to persuade the court that the higher levels of culpability and harm are applicable. Michael Caplan QC, a member of the Sentencing Council, has stressed the importance of a “consistent approach to sentencing”, but how the courts will apply the new guidelines in the early days, when they will have few cases to provide them with guidance, remains to be seen. iwis Drive Systems Ltd “Raises The Standard” in Britain’s Capital
The River Thames, which passes through Britain’s capital, has seen a free ferry service based at Woolwich near Greenwich since the mid 18th Century and has been enshrined in statue since 1885. The two terminals on the north and south banks allow vehicles and foot passengers to cross the river on one of two operational ferries. Each year the ferries carry over 1M vehicles and 2.5M passengers with a service operating approximately every 10 minutes, running 14 hours per day, 363 days every year. The vehicles and passengers embark at each side on one of 2 bridges or “Linkspans” which raise and lower according to tide, allowing a safe passage onto and off the ferry. The current operator, Briggs Marine Contractors, is contracted by Transport For London (TFL) to manage a major overhaul of the complete ferry system to increase the reliability and resilience of the service and maintain the ferry service for many years to come. Briggs contracted Amco to undertake the major works associated with the linkspan refurbishment which has included the replacement of the c o m p l e t e h o i s t i n g mechanism. The 4 x 240 Ton bridges or “link spans” (who’s life had expired)
were lifted by roller chains attached to a wire rope & roller arrangement. The lifting system has been replaced by a roller chain and direct drive sprocket arrangement supplied by iwis Drive Systems Ltd . In January 2014 Amco awarded the order to iwis Drive Systems Ltd, to produce and supply 500m of its 56B-2 (3 ½” Pitch Duplex) Elite Precision Roller Chain and 32pcs of duplex drive sprockets which are almost 1m in diameter.
