5 Ways Predictive Maintenance Cuts Down On Costly Downtime Manufacturers are being encouraged to utilise data capture to improve their approach to maintenance.

The industrial sector is undergoing massive transformation like never before. Sundeep Sanghavi co-founder of DataRPM looks deeper than preventative maintenance into the realm of predictive maintenance.

According to a World Economic Forum study, if the first Industrial Revolution was driven by steam, the second by electricity, and the third by digitization, we are now in the midst of a fourth: one driven by data. In this “Industrial Internet of Things” (IIoT) era, an explosion of IoT-connected devices has created a new level of big data possibilities for enterprises of all types.

In the search for how and where manufacturers can best reap the rewards of the IIoT, look no further than maintenance protocols.

Prevent or predict?

For much of the modern manufacturing world, the prevalent approach to IT maintenance can be best described as “preventive” — performing maintenance on a schedule, even if machines don’t actually require updating or repair. According to a 2015 study, 85% of companies utilise this strategy.

This is a non-optimal approach because scheduling maintenance leads to unnecessary labor (and, therefore, unnecessary costs). Additionally, a potential problem that goes undetected between scheduled maintenance can pose huge risks to the financial health of the company and the physical health of its workers.

Currently, manufacturers tend to devote their technology toward creating and enforcing maintenance schedules — but now’s the time to begin evolving toward a predictive methodology.

The biggest perks of predictive maintenance Using technology to drive a predictive maintenance approach, manufacturers can stream data from sensors mounted on their machines to uncover key usage and performance patterns in real time.

This allows them to identify potential malfunctions in the making and avoid the hefty costs of unexpected breakdowns.

As a whole, predictive maintenance offers manufacturers a tremendous opportunity to boost operational efficiency. The process can be easily automated through machine learning and cognitive data science, meaning there’s no need to hire an army of data experts or assign additional human capital to the cause.

Here are five specific benefits manufacturers will see from a predictive maintenance approach: 1. Reduced wrench time: Since the turn of the millennium, American factories have spent trillions of dollars a year performing maintenance. A predictive approach would render a great portion of these costs unnecessary or completely avoidable. For example, manpower would no longer be wasted on routine machine diagnostics, and companies could avoid huge outlays purchasing and installing new machines to replace those that broke down between inspections.Human intervention will be required only for a necessary repair, and because the issue is caught before it results in a complete mechanical breakdown, the wrench time will be much shorter.

2. Less downtime: “Downtime” is a word manufacturers despise. About 5% of the average factory’s production is lost to downtime every year, costing the global manufacturing community roughly $647bn annually. However, with a

predictive, data-driven maintenance approach, companies are much less likely to be blindsided by equipment failure and face lengthy, costly periods of inactivity. As an example, robotics company FANUC partnered with Cisco to create a “zero downtime” program that ended up saving one auto manufacturer $40 million.IoT sensors can detect if a machine is beginning to break down and automatically order a new part. Then, the company can schedule the necessary repair or installation during a low-volume or after-hours window, minimizing lost productivity.

3. Improved safety: Manufacturers undoubtedly take pride in creating safe environments for their workers, but one study found that up to 30% of all manufacturing deaths occur during maintenance activity. A predictive approach to maintenance does wonders toward increasing workplace safety by preventing dangerous scenarios. Companies can set safety parameters and receive immediate notification when a machine shows preliminary signs of reaching that threshold.

4. Better inventory management of parts: By predicting what will fail, one can manage what parts he needs to order or have in his maintenance inventory.

5. Better field personnel management: By predicting what will fail, manufacturers can better plan what kind of expertise would be required to perform maintenance.

Furthermore, they can better plan schedules, too (rather than when ad hoc failures occur).

The lowered costs, higher productivity, and improved product quality made possible by predictive maintenance all lead to the ultimate benefit of happier customers. And further, employing this strategy arms companies with cuttingedge technologies empowered by cognitive data science that produce high-level business insights — unlocking countless opportunities for improvement and innovation.

Automation for the People It’s a fact of life; mundane tasks are not something people passionately relish. Yet, the fear of job losses due to automation continues to unsettle workers in the manufacturing sector. Having experienced a 40% rise in industry robotic enquires in the last 12-months, managing director of Pacepacker Services Dennis Allison believes the growth in smart machines and automation will actually be a catalyst for new and more exciting knowledge-based jobs in the future.

“When reports are released it creates an element of scaremongering among the workforce,” notes Dennis. “The fact is, robots and smart technologies are filtering into every work environment. For the manufacturing sector, rather than dehumanising people, many of the tools today can free workers from the labour intensive and mundane tasks, enabling them to focus on more creative aspects of their job, like problem solving.”

According to the most recent research into automation adoption prepared by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), two million jobs will be created by 2020 because of the robotics industry.

What’s more, a further 60,00080,000 new activity jobs will be created in the food industry alone by 2016*. “Our study proves that robots create jobs,” said Gudrun Litzenberger, General Secretary of IFR. “Productivity and competiveness are indispensable for a manufacturing enterprise to be successful on the global market.

Robotics and automation are the solution. Certain jobs may be reduced by robotics and automation. But the study highlights that consequently many more jobs are created.”

Using robots for repetitive tasks like product swapping and packing can make work more fulfilling for people.

Rather than people’s jobs being displaced, Dennis believes that these machines can help enrich people’s lives and create greater job satisfaction. People whose positions become redundant due to automation are invariably given roles elsewhere within the business, he claims.

“Automation is often referred to as AI - artificial intelligence. I would argue that automation still requires personal input and numerous human attributes like problem solving. That means it isn’t artificial, but natural progression.”

Although there might be fewer jobs on the production line, automation will help manufacturing business models to evolve faster, increasing their chance of survival, points out Dennis. “It’s a tough time for manufacturers right now.

Many are competing harder on price and business costs are being further compounded by recent policy announcements like the national living wage, new pension arrangements and the introduction of the apprenticeship levy. Enterprises of all sizes are realising that they can take labour out of their costs and redeploy it elsewhere if they automate.

In our view, automation safeguards the roles of the majority, making the business more efficient and enabling it to maintain and hopefully expand its contracts by improved quality and production throughput.”

Summing up, Dennis says: “Work should be a source of inspiration and happier employees equate to more productive employees. If automation can assist businesses to survive, increase productivity and create greater human fulfilment, everyone benefits.”

A customer-driven development of the RF1-V, the new RF1-V+ offers a 50% improvement in speed through design innovations including a shingling infeed and extended reservoir capacity.

“The focus of our R&D is to increase throughput speeds and drive down cost.

It was all about achieving better efficiency and utilisation by engineering an offline coder that is capable of running continuously without any stopping and starting,” says Richard Pether, director at Rotech.

HANDS UP IF YOU KNOW ONE ROBOT ARM FROM ANOTHER

By Andrew Armstrong, UK Sales & Marketing Manager at FANUC UK What determines the choice of palletising robot to handle product X at point Y on the line? With a choice of 20+ FANUC robots arms all capable of performing palletising tasks, Andrew Armstrong, UK Sales and Marketing Manager at FANUC UK picks out some of the main criteria that factories should consider in order to specify the best robot arm for the job.

a.) Cycle time versus speed Most robots can be programmed to move extremely quickly - up to around 4000mm/second, but they will need to ramp up to this top speed, and then slow down from it.

By using FANUC Roboguide robot simulation package the system integrator can check to see if the cycle-time is achievable and in turn this can aid robot selection. FANUC Roboguide will aid the programmer in developing a robot path program which can reduce unnecessary overheating and wear and tear on the robot whilst achieving required cycle-time.

b.) Payload A key element in productivity calculations will be the payload of the chosen robot arm, and how closely the integrator feels it is wise to approach the rated weight. For example, in a palletising pick-and-place application, a magnetic end effector may be able to lift, say, 20 cans at a time. But choosing a smaller number may make

more sense.

In fact, it can form a substantial proportion of that payload. A 4-axis palletising robot may be able to lift 180kg, but the gripper on a palletising robot may contribute around 50kg of that load.

In selecting a payload range, the customer will also be estimating future needs and how much of a margin to leave in order to accommodate any likely change in the robot’s role.

c.) Cost and returnon investment When a robot supplier or integrator visits a prospective customer, the first task is to determine whether the proposed process is viable at all. The next step is to determine what measurables the customer will use to calculate their ROI, whether it be resource, health and safety, production volumes or quality etc.

It is because the working life of the robot is at the core of any ROI calculation that decisions about cycle time, payload and overall utilisation are of such importance. In Germany, for example, it is quite common to buy an additional robot cell rather than running a single cell at maximum utilisation, it also provides a level of redundancy to protect production.

d.) Reach If you are fortunate enough to be designing a new packaging line, then there should be few challenges in maximising efficiency and performance in the palletising robot. But if the line already exists, you are going to have to conform to it. You may have to perform some ‘surgery’ on the line, but you would normally try to minimise this.

One important element in the calculations around a palletising installation will be the reach of the robot. Making changes to the line to reduce the robot envelope may improve productivity and therefore make sense in terms of total cost. It may also mean that a lower-specification robot is needed.

e.) Number of axes Along with issues such as hygiene ratings (which are not normally significant at endof-line – unless of course it’s a cleanroom manufacturing environment), the number of axes of movement may be more important in pick-and-place applications.

But there are reasons why the choice between a 4-axis and 6-axis robot may come up more often in palletising.

In FANUC’s experience, a 6-axis robot may be needed in applications which would otherwise suit four axes because of unavoidable obstacles in the factory which the arm has to clear or negotiate.

Finally, customers should push their robot suppliers to ensure that what is on offer is the best solution for that particular application. In this situation, even if you do not know all the answers, knowing which questions to ask your supplier can be very helpful.

New Digital Multi-Mode Pyrometer Offers 3 in 1 Temperature Measurement Capability to Aluminium Industry AMETEK Land has released an innovative new pyrometer that provides high accuracy and a three-in-one capability specifically for the aluminium industry. This eliminates the need for separate pyrometers to be used at the extruder press exit and quench positions, as well as at mill entry and exit points in hot rolling mills, as this functionality can be carried out within one single pyrometer.

Rt. Hon Lord Maude of Horsham to highlight importance of UK manufacturing at

PPMA Total Show 2016

The Rt. Hon Lord Francis Maude of Horsham, former Minister of State for Trade and Investment and Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General, has been confirmed as the headline seminar speaker at the PPMA Total Show 2016, the UK’s premier Processing and Packaging Machinery and Packaging Materials exhibition.

Factory Automation Getting it Right First Time

We rely heavily on robotics and automation in many manufacturing environments, however getting from the specification and concept stage to a robust production system can be fraught with pitfalls for the un-initiated.

To help those individuals planning

or developing new products, or engineers considering automating their manufacturing lines, leading Automation consultants Automa8 have announced an ‘Automation Essentials: Effective Planning for Automated Manufacturing’ seminar, to be held at The Abbey Hotel in Redditch on Tuesday 4th October. This full day seminar will include comprehensive and in-depth presentations from industry experts.

Many companies that look into bespoke automation tend to over specify what it is that they want and need. This can result in increased costs and may not deliver the results they want for a justifiable price. To help engineers make the right choices, this seminar will run through the entire process of finding and buying automation products. In short, it will allow informed decisions and reduce risk.

The course is targeted at design engineers, purchasers, buyers, managers, and more generally, those people who are either planning automation or have started the automation process but could still take advantage of learning more. The seminar is also designed for those who are planning or developing new products.

The seminar will look at how to plan automation in the first place and, in particular, how to justify it through the business. “Many companies will consider automation; they may ask for quotes and when the responses arrive, it’ll be difficult to assess if the equipment will meet their needs, along with the complication of a possibly wide span of associated costs,” founder and Managing Director of Automa8, Mark Le Sueur says. “This complication may well put them off right away, or mean when they approach the management, it’ll be rejected out of hand, as it is perceived as high risk, with too many unknowns.”

Understanding which systems integrators or suppliers are the correct ones to use for each specific business will be discussed in the seminar. The two processes that work hand-in-hand to provide a product that works and that can be assembled in the workplace, design for assembly (DFA) and design for manufacturer (DFM), will also be explained during the one-day course.

With reference to suppliers, Le Sueur points out that “not everyone is good at everything. Some companies are good at process control and some companies are good at high speed automation assembly. Some specialise in low speed, semi-automated equipment.”

With the wide range of systems and suppliers on offer, the seminar will provide delegates with an understanding of what it is that they need and which supplier is best for them. This means delegates can then make informed decisions and get exactly what they need.

Putting together a specification is a key element of the one-day event.

Le Sueur explains that “because you’re buying something designed specifically for you, the specification must be crystal clear but the reality is that if you go out to three different companies, you’ll almost certainly get three different processes, all of which use different technologies.”

The seminar will, therefore, aim to provide delegates with the ability to review proposals and understand what’s the best for their company.

Rittal Automation System D Benefits to Peterboroug When the directors of Peterborough-based panel builders Pneumatechnique Ltd were looking at ways to improve efficiency and offer better production consistency they turned to Rittal and its automation systems for switchgear construction. Pneumatechnique’s aim was to find ways to lower both overheads and operational costs.

One of the main issues the company faced was the underemployment of their highly skilled labour force. This had become obvious during an evaluation of work practices that considered how they were meeting customer demand, and how the company in turn made demands on production as an “internal customer”.

“The interesting point is, that in conducting the review, we became commercially aware of the overheads and the opportunity costs inherent in our working practices and where savings could be made,” says Jim Venters, managing director of Pneumatechnique.

“There is no advantage in employing a highly qualified workforce to do basic tasks like drilling holes, which is what was happening,” Following a detailed assessment and recommendations made by Rittal’s expert team, the decision was taken by Pneumatechnique to install a Rittal Automation Perforex CNC machine.

Rittal’s team was able to advise on both the benefits that would be realised by installing the system, and potential limitations. It was quickly identified that the capital expenditure could clearly be outweighed by the cost savings and the Perforex installation became a “no-brainer” as part of the investment project.

Adam Wilson, production manager at Pneumatechnique, advises: “The Perforex System has improved the quality, consistency and speed of our output, which has obviously been hugely beneficial for customers. A project that was taking four hours can now be completed in just 20 minutes and with a better finish!

STEGO Filter Fan Plus expels more air from an enclosure.

STEGO ‘the protectors of electronics’, launch a filter fan series that will create a sensation. Its new air-flap technology achieves considerably more efficient air circulation which is a big plus in operational terms.

The filter fan series comprises the five market enclosure cut-out sizes from 92 x 92 mm to 291 x 291 mm, with 230 & 110v. ‘We cover all relevant fields of application with these sizes.

Due to additional product variations the Filter Fan Plus system gives the customer further freedom to choose between two principles that differ in direction of air flow.

The FPI-principle (‘in’) actively imports fresh air through the filter fan and expels it as warmed up interior air passively through the exit via flaps. The FPO-principle (‘out’) brings in the air passively through the filter at the base of the enclosure. The air then is actively drawn upwards by the fan and expelled through the flaps.

The core of the product: the air-flap technology contrary to using two filter mats, allow for noticeably more air to exit. Consequently a smaller filter fan suffices to achieve the same airflow output, than a bigger device did before. Thus saving cost and installation space!

Users can benefit quickly and easily from more air in enclosures. Due to a STEGO in-house development of mounting ratchet braces, the Filter Fans Plus can be inserted and mounted tool-free into the cut-out of the enclosure.

By pressing of the ratchet braces the Filter Fan Plus is drawn to the cut-out, clicks into place and is firmly sealed. No additional gluing or screwing is necessary; the slim filter fan fits perfectly.

On the other hand the hood of the Filter Fan Plus is deliberately designed to be opened with a screwdriver only. This allows for better access protection and consequently for more safety.

50 Years of Passion for Technology The year 1966 witnessed it all: The Beatles coming together for the last time, the “Wembley goal” during the World Cup Final, and the premiere of Star Trek. And in Troisdorf, Hans-Josef Kitz was laying the foundation of his own mechanical engineering company. “’Passion for Technology’ had been his motive,” recalls his son Stephan Kitz, managing director of the company today. He went on to further describe his father as an “extremely creative and talented designer.” Products made in Germany are unsurpassed in their reputation for their high technical quality. Hans-Josef Kitz also shared this passion.

As a young entrepreneur Hans-Josef Kitz started this first production facility over half a century ago in a garage of 15 square meters in size, that was attached to his parent’s house. One of the first designs by Hans-Josef Kitz included a celery washing machine for a farmer from the neighborhood.

In the early years, as a contractor, he built machines and components for local companies. During this time, more and more of his own products were developed. And then in 1972 he developed his first standard conveyor.

Even to this day, conveyor technology is a central pillar of mk’s business.

Hydrostatic Level Measurement the ESI Technology Way…..

What is Hydrostatic pressure and how does ESI’s Hydrostatic level measurement technology work?

What is Hydrostatic pressure?

Hydrostatic pressure is commonly described “The pressure equivalent to that exerted on a surface by a column of water of a given height due to the force of gravity”. A liquid column above the pressure sensor creates hydrostatic pressure, which is a direct indicator for the liquid level. Generally, the standard unit of measurement is calibrated in metres of water gauge (mWG). This may sometimes be referred to as metres of water column (mWC), or metres of H2O (mH2O).

Other countries may use different units of measurement, such as inches of water column (“WC).

How does an ESI Hydrostatic level transmitter work?

The measuring cell of the pressure sensor detects small changes in hydrostatic pressure, which increases or decreases according to the filling level. The ESI sensor is powered by a vented cable and is submerged into the liquid to be monitored. The sensor converts the acting pressure into an electrical signal. Most users will typically require a 4-20mA output, enabling signals to be transmitted over long distances. Cable can be supplied in continuous lengths of up to 500m.

In most applications the liquid is subjected to atmospheric pressure.

To provide accurate electrical measurement it is important that readings are compensated to allow for any changes in atmospheric (barometric) pressure.

This compensation is achieved by using a

vented cable which the ESI sensor to “breathe” to the atmosphere. This is done through a small nylon tube that runs through the cable which ensures that the output reading is relative to atmosphere. This is particularly important for the measurement of low levels of liquid, where changes in barometric pressure can significantly affect the true reading of level. For example, at high altitude where low atmospheric pressure is present.

In order to calibrate the device, a factor is used to convert bar to mWG. This ensures the accuracy of the reading. The standard unit of measurement is calibrated in meters of water gauge (mWG). ESI can calibrate and label sensors in units of measure determined by particular applications. For example in a diesel tank application the sensor can be calibrated in meters of diesel.

In most applications the sensor can be connected to a system via a simple IP67 rated terminal box, with glands to prevent water ingress. In certain applications, where over a long period of time moisture from high humidity may enter the vented tube it is advisable to use a desiccant filter. The desiccant absorbs moist air, preventing any moisture travelling to the sensing element and causing a short circuit.

What types of applications are they useful for?

Hydrostatic level sensors can be permanently immersed in boreholes for measuring the depth of the water table for example. The water table is the underground depth at which the ground is totally saturated. Deep boreholes with an average diameter of 25mm are drilled and left to fill to the level of the water table. A small diameter submersible pressure sensor is lowered down the borehole to accurately measure the level. In this type of application the control system would normally incorporate

a barometric sensor, which is used to compensate for changes in atmospheric pressure. ESI sensors are available with ATEX and IECEx certification and can therefore be used in similar circumstances where there is a risk of explosion. For example, monitoring the water levels in coal seam gas wells.

ESI Hydrostatic Level sensors are also well suited to measuring the levels of fluids in storage tanks. The sensor is lowered to the bottom of the tank via an access hole in its top.

The sensor cable is then connected back to a monitor, data logger, or PLC. Other areas where Hydrostatic level sensors can be effectively used are in the measuring of the level of water in rivers and reservoirs.

Hydrostatic level sensors are typically manufactured from 316l stainless steel. This makes them suitable for immersion in most media. Other materials such as plastic, titanium and hastalloy C may be used to ensure compatibility with whatever medium is being measured, where stainless steel is not suitable. A polyurethane jacketed vented cable ensures excellent media compatibility, with oil for example. Other materials, such as nylon and PTFE may be used if the medium requires it.

The advantages of using an ESI Hydrostatic level measurement sensor are that the vessel does not need to be disturbed or adapted to fit a level sensor. There is no need to install tank wells or sight glasses, etc. It allows levels to be measured under difficult conditions, such as down a deep shaft. The probe is easily extracted for cleaning and maintenance purposes. It is a highly reliable and robust solution.

Multi-Million Euro Manufacturing Plant Shows Bonomi’s Commitment To Global Expansion Customers of process valve and actuator supplier Bonomi (UK) are set to benefit from the opening of a new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in the company’s Italian homeland.

Officially unveiled in the presence of Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, the Brescia-based factory covers some 120,000 square metres and is capable of producing an impressive 130,000 valves per day.

Technologically advanced and constructed with environmental sustainability as its goal, the facility harnesses much of its electricity from solar panels, whilst heat is obtained partly via the cooling systems employed in its manufacturing processes, and partly from Geo-thermal ground-source heat pumps, thereby avoiding the use of fossil fuels.

The Next Generation The use of burners in any industry requires careful gas control not only for the sake of safety, but also to maintain a uniform process and to achieve maximum efficiency. Achieving higher levels of gas metering precision and integrating the function into a system however can be a challenge.

Bristol Based Engineering Student Wins South West Region Contribution to the Business Award

B

ristol based engineering student, Lizzie Garside, has been named as one of two winners of the South West Region’s Contribution to the Business Awards. The award scheme is operated by The Engineering Development Trust (EDT) and is open to students participating in the Year in Industry (YINI) scheme. YINI matches talented gap year and undergraduate students with businesses for paid work placements before or during their degree course. Lizzie and fellow South West regional winner, Victoria Challes, will now progress to the national finals of the awards, to be held in London in September.

Lizzie Garside (19) was one of six finalists, who delivered presentations to a panel of judges at the National Composites Centre in Bristol. Each candidate showcased their achievements, highlighting the contribution to the company for whom they had been working. The judging panel acknowledged the significant impact made by Lizzie during her YINI placement with Bristol based refrigeration and testing house, ECH Engineering. Lizzie joined the company to gain practical, handson engineering experience prior to studying for a degree in Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor of Engineering with Honours) at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.

During her placement with ECH Engineering, Lizzie has made a tangible contribution to the company’s procedures, processes and business, including the specification of new data logging software, the development of 3D printing technology and

embedding knowledge amongst colleagues, relating to refrigeration testing and standards. She has influenced commercial projects with her significant involvement in the design and installation of a test facility for refrigeration innovator, Adande, enabling ECH Engineering to deliver this makeor-break project.

Lizzie even enabled diversification, applying the company skill sets to new projects in new industries and is working on the development of a passenger monitoring system for Reading Buses, where she so impressed the chief engineer that she became a mentor for the client’s apprentice programme.

In addition to the Contribution to the Business Award, the panel of judges also presented Lizzie with the Bandvulc Environmental Award, in recognition of the energy saving aspects of her work.

Acknowledging Lizzie’s achievements, ECH Engineering’s Managing Director, Dr Ed Hammond, stated: “Lizzie has been a model employee and has made a major contribution to ECH Engineering and a number of our commercial projects.

We wish her well for her studies in New Zealand and we are confident that she will go on to make a significant impact in the engineering sector.”

He added: “As a company we are committed to the YINI initiative, promoting engineering, and specifically the cooling industry, as a career for young people. Undergraduate summer placements and YINI appointments offer tremendous opportunities for

students to bridge the gap between school and university, preparing them for their roles in industry. With the support of companies throughout our industry, young engineers will be able to hone their skill sets and address the environmental and product development challenges, which face us all.”

Mclennan’s improved MSE570 Eurocard stepper drive now with microstepping and higher performance Mclennan has launched new pin-compatible version its popular MSE570 Eurocard series stepper motor drive that adds selectable microstepping resolution and features improved speed/torque capability. The completely redesigned MSE570M drive offers much improved smoothness, lower motor resonance and retains all of the useful control and monitoring features of the previous version, the MSE570EVO2.

At up to 4A per phase available the new drive boasts 15% more useful torque than its half-step predecessor making it a compelling proposition as a dropin replacement for older machines where improved throughput or quieter and smoother performance is desirable. The new drive will also suit new OEM or end-user applications where its competitive price and the convenience of the Eurocard format is essential.

The new microstepping drive also features improved power input levels with provision for up to 48V DC regulated supply (up to 52 V DC unregulated). Its bipolar chopped constant current drive stage is compatible with permanent magnet or hybrid stepper motors with 4, 6 and 8 leads - typically with up to NEMA 34 frame sized microstepping motors.

DIP-switches are used to select a number of user-adjustable features of the MSE570M including full/ half/microstep resolution (up to 51,200 steps/rev), current control (from 0.25 to 4 A per phase), standstill current (0 to 100% in four stages), thermal protection settings, direction and drive disable.

Further flexibility is offered with switchable signal level input and output settings (5V or 12V logic) with the drive configurable for use with step and direction signals that include CMOS, TTL open collector, opto isolated or switch type inputs. Four surface mounted status LEDs indicate power, drive disabled, over-temperature and overload faults.

As well as manufacture the MSE570M and other motion control components, McLennan has distribution partnerships with a select number of global motion control manufacturers. The complete range includes DC brushed and brushless servomotors, stepper motors, and associated drive technologies together with motion controls, gearheads and miniature power transmission components. Mclennan offers these products with full technical support as component level solutions, or using its own in-house design and assembly facilities is able to integrate them into complete customised mechatronics assemblies and motion control system solutions.

Mitsubishi Materials Group, one of the world’s leading cutting tools suppliers, has signed up to be the latest member of the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC), part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.

he AFRC will act as a test facility for the development of new products and manufacturing processes, which will be used to produce metal components for use in a range of industries – including oil and gas, aerospace and automotive.

The partnership will also give Mitsubishi greater access to the UK market and allow the company to trial its cutting tools in the UK. In return, Mitsubishi will provide the AFRC with training and equipment, helping the centre’s engineering teams to develop new machining strategies, pass on knowledge to industry and work to best practice.

Lynne O’Hare, commercial team lead at the AFRC, said: “We are very excited to bring Mitsubishi on board as a new tier two member – our first cutting tool partner.
