Romold Turning the Tide on Manufacturing Slowdown As Brexit continues to overshadow the UK and its many industries, the effects on manufacturing are being seen far and wide. Headlines talk of “chaos”, “exports tumbling” and “irreparable damage”. However not all companies are feeling that effect.
I
ndeed, the UK’s manufacturing industry suffered a slowdown in growth last month following a previous stockpiling increase as reported by intelligence analysts IHS Markit. Whilst figures were in line with predictions, new order generation and export business slowed down at the second-fastest rate in over four years as “overseas clients [are] acting to re-route their supply chains away from the UK in advance of Brexit”, commented by Rob Dobson, Director at IHS. In addition, Dobson commented that the manufacturing employment rate saw a fall for the third time in four months as companies work harder to cut “natural wastage, improve efficiency and workforce restructuring”. This is coupled with findings from Subcon Show that showed a third of annual survey respondents admitted that they are suspending or decreasing headcount in the wake of Brexit. A further 32% are suspending or decreasing investment in equipment purchases, and 28% applying the same caution to research and development (R&D). One company swimming against the tide of Brexit is spill containment manufacturer Romold®, based in Livingston, West Lothian. Creating plastic spill containment products since 1998, significant investment has been made into machinery, employment and buildings over the first quarter of 2019. As a result, the company have seen a 36% increase in sales figures year on year with export making up the majority of the growth1. Commenting on the export business, Lars Birkedal, Export Director, said, “We serve many countries globally. In regards to exporting to the EU, we have taken several short term measures to protect our business and

have plans in place for most Brexit scenarios. We have warehousing in key European locations and can work around complex logistics to ensure our delivery performance is not affected. Whilst we cannot control possible levies that may impact our competitiveness against EU manufacturers in the short term, we have strong client relationships and longer term plans to overcome any competitive disadvantage.” To cope with increased demand, one such investment has been a new £500,000 rotational moulding machine; imported from Milan and designed to produce larger products in a more efficient manner. With improved streamlined production, Romold have also committed a sum of over £600,000 on the purchase of a second 26,438 sq. ft. factory adjacent to current operation. It is currently being used to house additional stock but also provides options for additional production capacity.
Managing Director of Romold and sister company Empteezy Ltd Bruce Wishart commented, “The acquisition of this unit and machinery will increase our output capacity, allowing for shorter lead times for delivery to our customers. This will help facilitate the strategic expansion of operations in coming years.” Such growth in operations requires significant increase in manpower with the creation of over 16 jobs in 2019 and 10 more in the near future. The boost of employment in the local area and community investment is of huge importance to Romold with the additional sponsorship of local charities, businesses and more. Whilst uncertainty continues to weigh heavily on future plans for many manufacturers, Romold continue to build quality and long lasting relationships that will safeguard them from the effect of Brexit’s aftermath… whatever that may be.

ENGINEERING UPDATE carried out by a robot-mounted marking head. The whole process is controlled by Pryor’s software, which is linked to the manufacturer’s plant production system to ensure that the correct data is applied.
Making a mark in aerospace The robotic marking of components is vital to ensuring that they can be traced at all steps along the aerospace supply chain. Dan Stephenson, sales manager at Pryor Marking Technology, explains why. The marking of parts is critical in the aerospace industry and, in many cases, mandatory. Specifications such as the UID standards laid down by the US Department of Defence and SAE International’s AS9132 marking standard stipulate that parts be marked permanently in order to give them a unique identity. This is done by applying a Data Matrix code (similar to a barcode) to the surface of parts. The code serves as a passport for the component and by scanning it, a manufacturer can access a myriad of data regarding its production - including the supplier of the material from which it is made and the production operative responsible for its manufacture. If the part fails, this data can help to determine the reason(s) why. Some parts can be marked adequately using hand-held devices, but large parts may need to be marked multiple times in exact locations. With some engine components worth more than £100,000 each, the incorrect application of a mark can be an expensive mistake to make. With this in mind, a precise marking technique, such as robotic control, is needed.
6|
Using Pryor Marking Technology’s multi-axis robotic systems, a large part is moved into a marking cell where it is loaded onto a rotary table and clamped in place. An operator scans the part’s unique identification code, which calls up a programme with marking instructions. These are
A key element of the technology is the vision system, which helps to validate and verify all of the marks. It checks that the marked information is correct and that it meets the relevant specifications. It can also help to ensure that the positioning of the mark is correct. While this information will be loaded as part of the marking programme, a mark may have to be made in a position relative to a certain feature on a component. The camera can find this feature and apply an offset to the marking programme as a further check to ensure correct placement. Robotic marking systems are generally used on round and cylindrical aeroengine components of up to 1.2m in diameter - although larger parts could be handled if required. As such parts become more commonplace, the need to track them will become increasingly important. Thus, in the field of screws, two new models have just been launched. The slotted capstan screw DIN 404 in natural nylon (other materials on request), available from M3 to M6. This screw is composed of an enlarged cylindrical head, a straight slot on the top of the head and two radial holes on each side of the head. It may be tightened by inserting a tee bar into the holes when it is not possible to use a screw driver to tighten the screw; locking wires can also be attached to the cross holes to secure the screw in container sealing for example. The second new feature is the Plastilockscrew ® , a pure product of Bülte’s expertise. It is a natural nylon screw with dimensions ranging from M5 to M12 approaching the screws ISO 4017. It has a base under the head, which limits the pressure under the head. In the summer 2019, we will be adding a third new screw to the catalogue, the Hex head cap screws 6 lobe T25 ~ ISO 7380. Its dome shaped head is wider and has a lower profile than a socket cap screw and has a 6-lobed recess. Whatever your industrial activity might be, Bülte will be at your side from product design to completion. Overcoming Common Failings of Quick Couplings
6. Product Cross Contamination
Quick disconnect fittings provide a convenient and efficient way to connect and disconnect fluid lines. Used across a myriad of industries and available in multiple sizes and types, quick disconnects will cause problems if not installed properly. Quick release couplings from Dixon comprises of a full range of interchange couplings for both hydraulic and pneumatic applications, engineered to the highest specification in order to flawlessly fit existing hoses and couplings.
2. Side Load
Dixon have been manufacturing quick release fittings for over 25 years and have a vast experience in recommending the right connection and identifying solutions for customers. Here, we outline five conditions under which quick disconnects are bound to fail and suggest a better solution for each application.
The solution: Dixon recommends always mounting quick disconnects in the direction of the load.
1. Vibration The problem: Standard sleeve lock quick disconnects used in applications involving vibrations can develop brinelling when connected directly to the tool. The term “brinelling” means dimples or grooves worn into the shoulder of the male half by locking balls in the female half. The solution: In applications that involve vibration or high impulse, we recommend a whip hose between the tool and quick connect to help buffer the vibration. Thread together quick connects, like the VEP and WS series, are typically a good fit for these applications. The term "brinelling" is named after the Swedish metallurgist Johan August Brinell, 1849-1925, who developed a test that measures the relative hardness of metals and alloys by forcing a 10mm steel ball into a test piece with a 3,0000kg load for 30 seconds.
10|
The problem: Side loading a quick disconnect causes heavy brinelling on the top groove of the plug or valve that damages, and will often crack, the coupling sleeve and valve.
3. Contamination The problem: Dirt and debris can contaminate any system, causing damage to the couplings and other components in the assembly. The solution: Always use dust caps and plugs when couplings are not connected and remove dirt prior to connecting couplings. Dixon offers caps and plugs for most hydraulic quick disconnect series.
4. Rotation The problem: Full rotation with a quick disconnect will cause cold forming of a nipple groove and score lines in the coupler leading to separation. The solution: Always use a swivel when full rotation is needed.
5. Human Intervention The problem: Using hammers to release pressure in a hydraulic line can cause immediate damage to any fitting. The solution: Dixon offers the HTE-Series, HTZ Series and other thread together options for applications that require connect under pressure
The problem: Product cross contamination, wasted time identifying connections and equipment damage caused by incorrect connections. The solution: The HT-Series Correct Connect™ colour bands provide a solution by helping to easily identify product, seals, materials or sizes for an application and helps with preventative maintenance schedules. In many cases having help to identify the best type of quick coupling for the application can overcome many common problems. With a wealth of experience and engineering expertise the team at Dixon can support customers in finding the best solution. Dixon specialise in the bespoke design of speciality couplings to meet the requirements of our customer including miniature and high pressure automatic connect couplings. A wide selection of materials including Steel, Aluminium, Brass, 316 & 303 Stainless Steel are available; thread configurations including BSP & NPT and body sizes ranging from 1/8” through to 2” ensure compatibility in a variety of installations. The Dixon range of manual quick release couplings is ideal for applications where full and smooth flow paths need to be maintained. PPMA TOTAL Show preview – stand K110
Brillopak showcase P180 fresh produce automation as used by Morrisons At the TOTAL show Brillopak (stand K110) will unveil the P180 Spider Arm Robot Cell which loads, and perfectly presents, packs of fresh produce in retail crates. Brillopak’s P180 system has recently been chosen by three of Morrisons fresh produce and fruit manufacturing sites to ensure that packs look good on their supermarket shelves. The P180 is a fully automatic pick and place packing line able to handle any type of fruit, salad and vegetables packed in VFFS, tray sealed and flow wrapped bags weighing up to 1kg. As experienced at Morrisons Rushden, Thrapston and Gadbrook sites, the P180 delivers improved in-store fresh produce presentation and can be easily adapted to handle reusable and renewable packaging formats. With only one multiskilled person to manage the system, it helps to reduce headcount and improves OEE by increasing packing speed, reducing rejects and less front to back end bottlenecks. Incorporating a four-axis Delta style robot with a glove-like end effector, there is no risk of piercing packs. Once the packs are lowered rapidly, yet gently, into trays at very high speeds, the crate passes over a vibration panel to settle the packs so they don’t get caught when the bale arms close - If the bale arm is damaged,
12|
The P180, with unique patented glove gripper, handles all types of fruit, salad and packs of vegetables
the crate is rejected and returned to the start of the packing process for reprocessing. This also ensures perfect pack presentation. Jason Kelly, Head of Operations for Morrisons Manufacturing has led the automation strategy across their fresh produce business. “Brillopak clearly understands the manufacturing environment and how critical production schedules are to getting fresh produce packed and looking good on the retail shelves,” comments Jason. With continued funding for the Producer Organiser (PO) scheme affording British growers and packers the opportunity to examine and plan future machinery investments, Brillopak director David Jahn comments on why now could be the perfect time to adopt a more aggressive automation strategy: “Marketing experts agree that health continues to be the biggest trend driving consumer eating habits, with consumers
often willing to pay a premium for it. Additionally, health can be combined with convenience and snacking to tick all the boxes,” remarks David. “New data from industry analysts Kantar Worldpanel reveals that produce sales are not only growing faster than the overall groceries market, but that people are buying more produce in more formats. We have many experiences where retailers concur that customers value the provenance, quality and environmental footprint when purchasing British produce. These are key reasons why we have developed the P180 to give suppliers sufficient production capacity to meet demand,” adds David. Brillopak look forward to meeting fresh produce packers at their stand K110 to explore the latest automation innovations in pack handling. www.brillopak.co.uk

Servitisation, Smart Systems and Connectivity – What’s next for instrumentation? There are many buzzwords associated with the multitude of new developments in today’s technological world, and the use of terms like Smart Instrumentation, The Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and Servitisation are becoming increasingly common. Some may be familiar but exactly what they mean to industry may be unclear. BSRIA is uniquely placed at the forefront of the use and application of technological innovation especially within the building services industry. BSRIA’s vision is to be leaders for information, knowledge and improvement for the built environment; to ‘make buildings better’; concepts such as the BSRIA Business-Focused Maintenance (BFM) methodology fit this remit and are increasingly relevant with technological advancement. Today’s engineers can use a variety of instrumentation that can be considered ‘smart’. However not all smart instruments are created equal, to be truly smart the unit must be linked to the internet through a hub or router creating an Internet of Things (IoT) device. The device generates data that is uploaded and analysed either by a human operative or a software application. Developments in this area have included preventative maintenance planning with the use of smart monitoring instruments including ultrasonic flow meters, process emissions analysers, power meters, temperature and humidity monitors. Such instruments are becoming indispensable tools, providing non-invasive, user-friendly and cost-effective solution to smart maintenance testing. Advancing development of smart instrument technology means that the concept of Servitisation is increasingly relevant to the way today’s building services sector products and services are created and marketed. The concept of Servitisation was first discussed in 1988 by Vandermerwe & Rada in their ‘Servitisation of business: Adding value by adding services’ paper. Servitisation of products involves a strategy of adding value by adding services to products or even replacing a product with a service package. For example, the Servitisation of instrumentation can be supplying a basic unit, with extras including accessories, software, service, repair, calibration and data management being sold as additional options. Data management can include Apps, portals, processing and storage; maximising and unlocking the value of this data is an ongoing challenge.

Skynet increases parcel throughput capacity with Interroll crossbelt sorter L.A.C. Conveyors and Automation working closely with long standing partner Interroll have installed a full turnkey sortation system at a UK sorting facility of leading courier, Skynet Worldwide Express. The vertical crossbelt sorter at its core can achieve sorting rates of 4,000 parcels per hour. Established in 1972, Skynet Worldwide Express has grown to become the globe’s largest independently owned express courier network with over 1,000 locations in 209 countries and territories. The company, which delivers everything from postcards to grand pianos, has its UK headquarters at Hounslow, adjacent to London’s Heathrow Airport. However, with a strong focus on providing the right solution through personal service, flexibility and attention to detail, the team at Hounslow found that its parcel capacity was under pressure. The warehouse facility was originally built for storage only, but Skynet decided to install a new sorter system to keep up with increased customer demand. Here, the company turned to LAC Conveyors, an industry leading manufacturer of conveyor and automation systems, which in turn called upon the services and solutions of Interroll. Primarily, the sorter was installed to deal with outbound parcels for customers in Europe and Asia, and therefore the accuracy of sort was the key differentiator. Effective space utilization was another demand set out by Skynet. Saving space with modular crossbelt sorter design L.A.C. reviewed three sorter types and recommended the proven capabilities of the Interroll vertical crossbelt sorter, the main feature of which is its distinctive space saving design thanks to a compact modular approach. “For example, a width of just 1.7m is sufficient to install a vertical sorter with 400 x 400mm crossbelt carriers. This configuration can also save valuable space if full containers are transported into the sorter, which is a unique offer in the marketplace” says Steve Nuttall, Sales Manager at LAC Conveyors.
initial parcel gapping. Parcels are then scanned, and the weight and volume of each item is collected. “The Interroll team kept LAC and Skynet informed and involved at all stages of the enquiry, offering and explaining different options to ensure the right solution was provided,” says Ian Gray, Sales Applications Manager at Interroll Ltd. “Installed in November 2018 in time for the peak Christmas season, the new sorter has ultimately increased throughput capacity with room for future business growth.” “Interroll and LAC have supplied a first-rate system and installation for us” says Lee Smith, London Operations Manager for Skynet. “The sorter, associated conveyors and scanning equipment have helped improve our workflow immensely and the ease at which the Interroll team coordinated the installation ensured this project was delivered on time.”
4,000 parcels per hour Due to the limited amount of space available in the new section of the warehouse, the system had to be condensed as much as possible, but still achieve the 4,000 parcels per hour requirement. As a result, the sorter’s chutes have all been configured to discharge on one side only as this offers the optimum space utilization. Prior to the sorter, a belt conveyor with index marks has been installed by LAC to ensure

Spiral or corrugated tube heat exchangers which is best for wastewater treatment? Spiral heat exchangers (SHEs) are synonymous with the treatment of slurries and wastewater which have a high fouling risk and often contain fibres and solid materials. However, in many situations the performance of a corrugated tube heat exchanger is equal to or better than that of a spiral design.
I
n theory SHEs offer greater thermal efficiency than smooth surface tubular designs due to their large surface area and true countercurrent flow. However, this assumes efficient operation at all times. In practice fouling frequently occurs, interfering with thermal transfer. Corrugated tube designs also reduce fouling. The tube-in-tube HRS DTI Series is also a true counter-current heat exchanger, however, unlike SHEs, the use of HRS corrugation technology increases heat transfer and operational efficiency, while also minimising fouling. The design of SHEs can create turbulent flow which is claimed to reduce the likelihood of fouling, producing ‘self cleaning’ effects, although this claim often becomes ‘virtually no fouling and clogging’ – something very different.
For the most challenging and high-fouling applications a scraped surface heat exchanger, such as the HRS Unicus Series, may be necessary
Unlike SHEs, corrugated tubes can easily be removed for inspection, cleaning and maintenance and a variety of flange connections are available. Should the heat exchanger suffer internal damage, the failed section can be easily bypassed by moving the interconnecting bends; a replacement can be manufactured and fitted when it is ready. In contrast, if a spiral is damaged, the complete heat exchanger must be removed to a workshop where many layers have to be cut out to access the point of failure. In many situations a corrugated tube heat exchanger, like the HRS DTI Series, is the best solution for challenging materials such as sludge. However, in the most extreme cases
with a very high fouling risk, it will be necessary to use a scraped-surface heat exchanger such as either the HRS rotating R Series or the patented reciprocating Unicus Series.
SHEs are often said to be easy to clean, yet it is common to have to remove 40-50 bolts to open the unit. Replacing bolts with hinges and C-clamps makes opening easier, but requires more space for installation, while the internal brackets which give the heat exchanger its rigidity make cleaning difficult. The corrugated tubular design of the HRS DTI Series reduces fouling in a number of ways. The tube-intube design offers a much larger channel than spirals; reducing blockages. The corrugated inner tube encourages turbulence, which increases heat transfer and reduces fouling and the tubes within the DTI Series are easy to clean and maintain. Removable bends improve access, and there are no expensive gaskets to replace.

ollowing extensive discussions with some existing customers, ODU have created a hybrid rectangular connector, incorporating expertise from its range of push-pull locking circular connectors into their ODU-MAC® Blue-Line product range. The resultant PUSH-LOCK creates an even more compact ODU-MAC® modular connector with a design that makes these innovative hybrid connectors stand out from the crowd. The goal was to offer a connector that was ergonomic, easy to use, and highly flexible – in a style that was as small as possible. The size was incredibly important, so as to meet the growing trend for miniaturization. The result is a handy hybrid IP67 connector capable of over 5,000 mating cycles, that can be equipped with various module inserts and yet has a relatively large M25 cable outlet.

ODU-MAC® PUSH-LOCK a new compact rectangular connector. Push-pull locking is incredibly simple and reliable. This locking style saves a huge amount of space, so several connectors can be mounted very close to each other – an advantage that is inextricably linked to its locking principal. This, combined with low mating and de-mating forces, means the connector can be used intuitively with just one hand. Find out more at: https://www.odu-uk.co.uk/blue-line/

Multi-functional cell from Wood Automation & Control takes training in robotics and automation to new levels
Addressing the skills shortage within UK manufacturing has become a clear focus at all levels, from Government initiatives, recruitment of apprentices within both small and large companies, and from organisations such as Make UK, who are focused on creating the most supportive environment for UK manufacturers to enable them to thrive, innovate and compete. As robotics and automation continue to play an increasingly important part in our manufacturing processes, it is essential that both our current and future generation of engineers have the opportunity to get “hands-on” training and experience with the latest robot, automation and control technologies. Wood Automation & Control used their wealth of engineering and automation expertise to design, build and install a state of the art robotic training cell at Make UK’s Technology Hub in Birmingham. This training cell is now live and ready for use by the 400 apprentices and other engineers joining the Make UK training courses this year. This significant investment in the latest robotics and production automation, including both software and hardware, complements systems already installed at the Technology Hub, which now boasts an unrivalled range of industry standard components from a variety of manufacturers. Engineering apprentices at the Make UK’s Technology Training Hub can now get their hands on the latest robotic programming and production trouble-shooting systems thanks to the system designed and built by Wood Automation & Control, with support from technology partner SMC UK Ltd. Students using the facility, including both apprentices and experienced engineers seeking to enhance their skill level, will be able to experience a range of tasks including the inspection, conveying and robotic transfer of component shafts into and out of the cell and the robotic pick and place of automotive body panels. Tim Bednall, Sales and Marketing Manager for Wood Automation & Control commented: “Make UK required a training cell that incorporated a variety of robots and control systems, in order to give apprentices the widest possible knowledge and experience. We designed a self-contained cell featuring a range of automated handling technologies commonly found within manufacturing
facilities. The cell has also been designed with a minimal footprint and features different control software and interfaces. In addition, the whole system has been engineered with safety being of paramount importance.” The training cell incorporates KUKA, FANUC and ABB robots, and a fundamental part of its configuration is its unique and secure wireless communications and data capture system that enables the entire suite of control systems and robotics to operate and talk to each other. Wood Automation & Control worked in collaboration with SMC UK to achieve this high level of functionality in such a demanding environment. At the heart of this system is SMC’s wireless EX600-W Fieldbus system for serial input / output transmission. Capable of operating over a radius of up to 10 metres it can easily control all of the individual systems within the training cell. Remote monitoring via a PC allows tutors and students to check functionality or trouble-shoot whilst away from the physical training cell. The Wi-Fi system uses the 2.4GHz ISM frequency band, but can frequency hop every 5 milliseconds to provide stable communications and minimise the risk of disruption from other electronic devices. Its data encryption system helps to maximise security and prevents unauthorised access. The cell also features a dual control system to allow students to become familiar with both Siemens and Rockwell controls and HMI architectures. A touchscreen ‘Tutor’ HMI enables instructors to select fault conditions and disable components within the cell to create realistic system failures for subsequent identification and rectification by the apprentices. A range of pneumatically operated gripper systems, with interchangeable gripper fingers, provides the flexibility for the robots to handle and manipulate different component parts. Gordon Thompson, the Technology Skills Lead at Make UK, comments on the cell’s performance: “The Robotic Training Cell is proving to be an excellent training aid capable of a wide range of usages and scenarios, in part due to the advanced technology supplied by Wood Automation & Control and their partner in this project SMC UK Ltd. This is allowing us to produce more scenarios than envisaged and has added some significant value to the training delivery.”

approach, they are kept on order picking trolleys that are already common to many warehouses. The trolleys are placed in a frame fitted with put-to-light displays. As soon as the operator has picked the right quantity of products, the displays indicate how many must be put into which customer bin. Each ‘put’ is confirmed by pressing the button on the display, and then the operator moves on to the next order line.
Kardex NEW FramePick 4 Wholesale delivers Faster Order Picking Need a fast and accurate picking solution - but a Mini-Load is to costly? FramePick 4 Wholesale from Kardex offers an alternative for intelligent order picking For a growing number of companies – whether they are focused on the B2B or B2C market – they are experiencing bottlenecks in their traditional fulfillment operations. There simply isn’t enough time for an order picker to take a trolley up and down past endless rows of racking so that the products can be picked, packed and dispatched quickly enough. What these warehouses need is an efficient, dynamic and flexible system for fast order fulfillment. Kardex introduces their FramePick4Wholesale - an efficient goods-to-person solution that enables wholesale companies to reduce the distances walked in their warehouses by as much as 65%. The combination of smart and intuitive technologies virtually eliminates picking errors, plus intelligent order batching

enables a fourfold increase in the productivity of order pickers – and all without having to install a complex system of rigid conveyors or investing in other costly material handling equipment. At the heart of the system is the LR 35 vertical storage system. With two, four or six units connected in series, you can create highly compact storage of the inventory in standard plastic bins. Once an order line is released, the LR 35 rapidly presents the relevant storage bin to the operator. A user-friendly screen, which can be supported with a laser pointer if desired, informs the operator of how many products to pick and put in the customer order bins. The positioning of the customer bins is unique. Rather than the traditional conveyor-transport
Once all the customer bins on a trolley are full, the displays on the frame light up. An operator can then simply transfer the trolley to the packing area where all the orders are packed ready for dispatch as normal. The next trolley waiting to be filled with customer orders can immediately be wheeled into the vacant space. When the operator uses the software to select the relevant number of customer orders, the software applies a predefined strategy to link them to the empty bins on the trolley. Then, a single scan is all it takes to connect the trolley to the frame and to add it to the current batch of orders being processed. The fast order fulfillment solution revolves around the LR 35, which is the fastest vertical storage system on the market. Kardex Remstar supplies FramePick 4 Wholesale as a total solution including LR35 units, frames with put-to-light displays and Power Pick Global Smartpick 6000 software. Plastic bins, order picking trolleys, label printers and additional software modules are also optionally available from Kardex Remstar. The total solution is offered with a complete service package which gives customers the peace of mind they need in fast order fulfillment. Apprentices Create Mayflower and Frigate Replicas Two groups of City College Plymouth apprentices have created scale replicas of The Mayflower and the Type 23 frigate, HMS Portland.
The apprentices, who are employed by local businesses, including Aldermans, Babcock, Pipex px and Princess Yachts, showcased the vessels at a special presentation event held at the College on Friday 19 July. As part of their training, the College’s engineering, welding, fabrication, naval architecture, mechanical and electrical apprentices work together in teams to create scale models out of metal with functioning parts. This year, a group of 30 apprentices collaborated on a replica of The Mayflower that sailed from Plymouth to America, which it is hoped will go on display in The Box to coincide with next year’s 400th anniversary celebrations. They started work on this in May, allocating roles and responsibilities (from project management to assembly) and working on the engineering drawings, which formed the basis of the ship’s components. The model was constructed from stainless steel and the apprentices used a range of techniques and machinery to build the ship, from plasma cutting to sheet metalwork and welding.
34|
Alongside this, a group of 16 Babcock apprentices worked on a replica of the Royal Navy Type 23 frigate, HMS Portland. This was constructed from aluminium and is a water-tight, working model, fitted with an electrical motor. This replica will be used for outreach STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities in local schools. Nick Dawe, Academy Manager for Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing at the College, said: “The replica is perfect for display and STEM activities because it includes lots of moving parts, access to the inside of the vessel and becomes a STEM/refit
planning activity to get machinery out and back in.” College lecturer, Leigh McCaffrey, who supervised the apprentices, said: “They did an amazing job - these are really challenging projects and through the process the students really came into their own, gaining skills and confidence.” If you are interested in a career in the engineering industry and would like to find out about the range of courses and Apprenticeships available at City College Plymouth, call 01752 305300 or visit www.cityplym.ac.uk.

SEEPEX rises to the challenge of viscous waste at ciabatta bread factory SEEPEX’s automated solution has enabled a ciabatta factory to hygienically dispose of its viscous waste bread and dough products
An on-site trial at a ciabatta bakery has demonstrated that it is possible to successfully pump viscous, sticky dough products, even when they are mixed with baked bread. SEEPEX UK’s customised enclosed, automated waste removal solution has optimised the bakery’s waste handling process, reducing labour and improving hygiene levels in the production area. Understanding the problem The owners of a ciabatta bakery identified the manual removal of its waste bread and dough as an inefficient task. In a bid to find an alternative solution to reduce manpower, improve hygiene standards and optimise the waste removal process, they
approached progressive cavity (PC) pump supplier, SEEPEX UK. “The challenge was not just that dough is a difficult substance to pump but also, that the variety of materials being handled behave so differently,” explains Joao Rodrigues, Applications Engineer. “Dough is a highly viscous product – it is dense, wet and sticky; fresh bread is light and compressible; and waste bread is hard and non-flowable.”
A sophisticated solution The solution proposed by SEEPEX comprises a BTM open hopper pump with an auger that mixes the different products and prevents them from bridging in the hopper. It also contains integral static and rotating knives which produce a pumpable consistency. This then passes into the pumping elements of the stator and rotor, and is transferred through enclosed pipework into the removal lorries.
52|
The existing manual system often resulted in waste product falling or being dropped onto the factory floor, creating an unhygienic and hazardous environment. Movement of waste from production areas to the outside of the bakery also presented further hygiene problems. In contrast, the only open part of the new solution is the hopper, into which waste product is loaded. Every other part is enclosed, meaning there is no need for anyone to enter and exit the factory. The reduction of spillage also keeps the factory floor clean and tidy. The fully automated solution only requires one person to load product into the hopper, freeing resources for production. Furthermore, the pump only starts running when there is product to handle and stops the moment the hopper is empty, making it an extremely energyefficient solution.
Joao concludes: “Viscous, sticky dough products are notoriously difficult to pump. This solution offers bakeries an efficient, safe and hygienic way to dispose of their viscous, sticky and nonflowable waste.”

Double digit Energy saving on rotating drum dryer UNIC Systems, a leading consultant in the thermal energy sector, has chosen the ECOFLOW venturi orifice steam traps from EBE Engineering to deliver the optimum performance for their new rotating drum tunnel dryer.
U
NIC Systems already supplies rotating drum tunnel dryers to a major player in the wooden board manufacturing market. Their customers’ specification for a new tunnel dryer was very demanding. To dry between 20 to 30 tonnes of saturated wood shavings per hour, with a final relative humidity of between 0.5 to 1.5%, requiring in excess of 32000 kJ/kg specific heat capacity. Faced with these requirements, Günter Kikillis Managing Director of UNIC Systems, dismissed conventional mechanical steam traps. “We knew that the only option for the removal of large volumes of condensate were conventional float traps. Due to the rotation of the drum, the action of this type of mechanical steam trap would be completely compromised. We needed an innovative solution”. EBE Engineering has been supplying venturi orifice steam traps for over a decade. When approached by UNIC Systems it was clear that a bespoke solution was necessary. Nigel Egginton Managing Director of EBE Engineering explained, “We had worked with UNIC Systems on previous projects but the new tunnel dryer required a complete rethink. We knew that the venturi orifice technology would work but we needed an innovative design that could be incorporated into the overall concept.” Starting with a blank canvas, EBE Engineering set about applying the knowledge gained over many years dealing with industrial end users. The result of this experience produced the revolutionary ECOFLOW venturi orifice steam trap. Unlike any other venturi orifice steam trap on the market, the entire trap, including the flanges, was made
54|
from a single casting in high grade stainless steel. Applying the latest finite element analysis and fluid flow modelling for the casting, the steam traps integrity is ensured to the highest level. Nigel Egginton elaborated “By incorporating a completely cast housing we were able to develop a modular concept for the steam trap. It enables us to cover a much larger range of capacities and different flanges in the same steam trap body.” The key to success has been the efficient operation of the ECOFLOW venturi orifice trap, as Günter Kikillis explained “The customer operates older steam heated rotating drum dryers but we have seen a double digit energy saving with the new design in comparison to these older models. Condensate removal through the new ECOFLOW venturi orifice steam traps from EBE Engineering has contributed to this impressive improvement. We are planning the development of even bigger dryers and the ECOFLOW will be the first choice for future designs”.

Understanding Cooled Versus Uncooled Optical Gas Imaging FLIR Systems has published a technical note that discusses and compares the advantages of cooled versus uncooled Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) technology for different industrial applications. Historically, OGI cameras have been designed with cooled infrared (IR) detectors that offer several advantages over uncooled detectors - but they often come at a higher cost. Advancements in the technology of uncooled
detectors have allowed the OGI camera manufacturers such as FLIR to design and develop lower cost OGI solutions for a growing range of industrial applications. However, although lower in cost, there are some limitations to OGI cameras with uncooled detectors versus those using cooled detectors. Before comparing the benefits of the 2 technologies the authors provide a useful background to the scientific theory of OGI cameras. The technical note discusses when selecting a camera for your OGI needs, the first factor to consider is ensuring the camera in question can visualize your target gas. Though price is often an important consideration in choosing an OGI camera the article reviews the key advantages of a cooled OGI camera such as increased sensitivity
and image quality which may not only impact your ability to visualize small leaks but may also be important when trying to meet regulatory standards. The authors also discuss that there are advantages to uncooled OGI cameras beyond a lower purchase price including that they also cost less to maintain due to the simplicity in design with no cooler needed - potentially making them more appropriate for continuous, 24/7 operation applications. To read the article in full please visit https://bit.ly/2E5bTjg. Determining the Thermal Characteristics of Microelectronic Devices FLIR Systems reports how researchers from the Microscale Thermophysics Laboratory at the University of Texas (Arlington, USA) are using FLIR thermal cameras to measure heat dissipation in three-dimensional integrated circuits (ICs). The Microscale Thermophysics Laboratory conducts research on microscale thermal transport, energy conversion systems, semiconductor thermal management, bioheat transfer and related topics. Heat dissipation in three-dimensional integrated circuits (ICs) is a significant technological challenge, and has impeded the wide adoption of this technology despite a tremendous amount of research in past decade or two. To measure the temperature on microelectronic devices, researchers at the Microscale Thermophysics Laboratory have traditionally used a wide variety of techniques, including thermocouples. A main challenge with this technique is that thermocouples only measure temperature values at a single point. For a more complete, and visual, picture of the temperature field, the team decided to use
56|
thermal imaging cameras from FLIR. Designed for applications including electronics inspection, the FLIR A6700 Series thermal imaging camera has proven ideal for capturing high-speed thermal events and fast-moving targets. Short exposure times have allowed users to freeze motion and achieve accurate temperature measurements. The camera’s image output can be windowed to increase frame rates to 480 frames per second which has enabled the researchers to accurately characterize even higher speed thermal events, helping ensure critical data doesn’t get missed during testing. The head of the research group at the Microscale Thermophysics Laboratory, Dr Ankur Jain said “Thermal phenomena in devices of interest to us occur very rapidly, and we need full field information as opposed to single-point measurements”. He
added “The FLIR A6703sc has helped us during our experiments, because the camera presents us with very fine details of the device being measured.” For further information on the FLIR A6700sc thermal imaging camera series please visit www.flir.com/products/ a6700-mwir/ or contact FLIR Systems on +32-3665-5100 / research@flir.com.

Software: A Critical Component of Any Infrared Camera Koen Jacobs When people who need to make thermal measurements shop for an infrared (IR) camera, they generally have a series of questions about the camera’s capabilities: What can it measure? How sensitive is it in a particular wavelength range? How fast does it capture images? What are the options for lenses? Often, though, they forget to ask about a critical part of the system they’re buying — the software. Software is the main interface between the camera and the user and provides the work environment in which all the camera functions take place. The capabilities the device provides for the users, the types of measurements they’ll be able to make, and the analyses they can perform are dependent on how well designed the software is and which features and options it contains.
images stored in the buffer from before the bang are discarded. With pretriggering, the recording starts with the sound of the blast, but the software also captures a few frames from before the triggering event, to make sure nothing is missed.
Software provides four main functions: camera control, data capture, analysis of the data, and export of the data.
In fact, some users rely on pre-triggering for everything they record, just to be on the safe side. Perhaps they start the recording simply by pressing a button, but they want to make sure they weren’t too slow in doing so. With pretriggering, they capture a few frames from before the button was pressed. It’s an added assurance that they’re getting the entire measurement.
Camera Control
Analysis
Camera control allows the operator to make use of all of the camera’s functionalities. That includes everything from the most basic operations, such as starting and stopping the recording, to more exotic functions. For instance, if the user wants to study some phenomenon that spans a wide temperature range, the software allows him to put the camera into the right dynamic range extension mode to cover all the temperatures of interest. The software combines several camera functions in a smart way to expand the total system’s measurement capabilities.
Perhaps the most important function of IR camera software is performing data analysis. All the pixels that the camera records are measurements of either temperature or radiant volume, i.e., the amount of IR photons an object gives off. The software allows the user to select sections of the data, visualize it in graphs, or export it to a spreadsheet such as Excel. If, for instance, he wants to examine a jet engine’s exhaust, he can take an image of that and draw a line through the center of the image and see the temperature profile of the exhaust. Software should provide a number of statistical analysis functions, along with ways to visualize the analyses in graphs or tables.
While many of the algorithms that dictate the operations are contained on a processor within the camera itself, the user interface that allows the operator to select those functions is often a PC. To make the two ends of the software work in concert, the reliability of the connection between the camera and the PC is paramount. Some of that comes down to a hardware issue. The connection has to be robust enough that fast data transfer and fast recording can take place. That’s especially true with high-speed measurements that often take place on the military test range, which can fill the built-in storage capacity of the camera in as little as 60 seconds, so the data must be transferred to the PC.
Data Capture For capturing data, software allows the user to select the right frame rate to record for a particular measurement. Not all tests require recording at the full frame rate of the camera. Good software will provide a range of options that allows the user to pick the frame rate that provides the right balance between the resolution of the data and the volume produced. Another way software helps with data capture is through a function called pre-triggering. Often the camera will be set to start recording when triggered by some event. For instance, if a user wants to capture an image of a bullet in mid-flight, he might use an acoustic trigger— the camera is running, but the recording doesn’t start until the gun goes off, and any
Software can also address special challenges in analyzing some images. Say you wanted to make measurements of a helicopter flying across the sky. It’s an easy target for the camera to pick out — a hot helicopter across a cold sky. But analyzing it is very difficult because the helicopter is moving across the image, and it’s captured by a different set of pixels from one frame to the next. That makes a pixel-to-pixel comparison very challenging. A process called segmentation can help here. Basically, the software selects image data above or below a certain threshold value and throws it away. The sky is very cold compared to the helicopter, so its radiance values will be very different. Segmenting away the sky allows the computer to focus only on radiance values produced by the helicopter itself, making the analysis simpler, much less time-consuming, and more accurate. The camera can record to a number of different file formats. One particularly useful type for analysis is the sf.mov format. One advantage it has is that it’s an open format, so the user can open it and see the different files within it — one with the image data, one with the camera parameters, and a file for any specific corrections applied during a measurement. The sf.mov format is also human readable and editable, so the user can understand what’s in it and alter the contents if necessary.
Exporting Data The final software task for data is to export it, so it can be shared. Often users want to transfer it into a wmp file, the Windows Movie Player format. That allows them to select an image or a sequence they like and make it viewable by anyone. They may also want to export the data in MATLAB format, or select an image or series of images and save them as a gif, jpeg, png, or any of a number of other popular file types. Images from IR measurements, especially those recorded at high speed, can grow to be large files, which can make exporting and saving them a challenge. One way to deal with that is FLIR’s extract function, which allows users to select a small amount of the file. They might, for example, have 5 minutes of data, but the most relevant part of the test lasts only 20 seconds. Extract allows them to select that 20 seconds and discard the rest of the recording. Or they may have recorded at 1,000 frames per second, but realize they only need one frame out of 10. They can extract just the frames they need, shrinking the data to a more manageable size. FLIR also offers a special self-viewing file. It takes a recorded sequence, adds in a “light” version of the software, and saves it as an executable file. That sequence can then be shared with and viewed by anyone, even if they do not have a license to the full software package.
The Key to a Powerful Camera Software is a critical component of an IR camera system. It provides the command and control functions that run the camera, it organizes capture of the data, it allows the user to analyze the recorded data, and it provides a means to export data. While many of these functions can be performed by general-use software, or by programs written by the user, an IR camera system that includes a complete software package with multiple options can provide the user with superior functionality.

Reducing The Costs And Consequences Of Unplanned Downtime In today’s competitive business environment, it’s essential that productivity, efficiency and customer service levels remain high, if cost and profitability targets are to be achieved. Whilst there are many different aspects to manufacturing and operational processes, one of the main inhibitors to achieving required output levels and targets is that of unplanned downtime. In this article, Reich Drive Systems UK’s David Proud recommends some basic steps that can be taken to reduce the potential for these events and the subsequent costs associated with downtime. The issue of downtime, and especially unplanned events, is a blight for any business whether they are manufacturers, plant and transport operators or delivering key infrastructure services. There can be many causes of unplanned downtime ranging from unavailability of materials, shortages of manpower, extended changeover periods and of course one of the most common reasons, equipment or machinery failure. Regardless of the reasons behind the stoppage, the effects are the same: loss of production and value whilst overhead costs continue to accrue. Although it is almost impossible to avoid all unplanned downtime, it is possible to significantly reduce the potential for these costly events by taking a pro-active and technically led approach. When considering the potential for unexpected downtime caused by components or equipment, it is highly likely that the oldest or obsolete items will pose the greatest risk. Initiating a detailed review or audit of all machinery and componentry will highlight any particular items that may require immediate maintenance attention or indeed replacement. This review will also help to enhance and update any existing preventative maintenance schedules, setting new priorities for other items deemed at immanent risk of obsolescence or failure, and also identifying items that are vital to maintaining high operational efficiencies. Taking steps to replace items perceived to be at risk before they actually fail is much less costly that suffering the consequences and costs associated with unplanned downtime. When considering
58|
replacements, it is also essential to look closely at the specification of the replacement item. Merely selecting the exact same part, or the least expensive part that will fit, may not be the right decision as this is likely to replicate the original problem, possibly even in the short term.
Taking time to review the different coupling types, and selecting a coupling which not only meets all of the technical and application requirements, but is either maintenance free, or has the ability to have change parts replaced in-situ will bring significant ongoing benefits to uptimes and efficiency.
This is especially true of drive couplings, which are an essential part of any drive train, and therefore a key element in maintaining uptime and efficiency. Drive couplings vary greatly in their design and capabilities, so for any given application engineers must ensure that they specify the drive coupling correctly to guarantee ongoing reliable, efficient and safe operation. Factors such as torque transmission, speed ranges, running start / stops and potential shock loadings are just some of the key elements in the selection of the coupling. If a previous coupling has failed unexpectedly it is likely that one or more of these factors has been overlooked. If there is any uncertainty in specifying a replacement part, engineers should speak with a reputable supplier who will be able to review the application details and identify a variant capable of meeting the challenges of the specific application.
One other important and contributing factor to reducing downtime is that of training. A topic sometimes overlooked, structured and ongoing training for maintenance engineering teams will bring tangible dividends. Ensuring that all maintenance engineers are multi-skilled, and involved in the introduction of new components, systems and technologies within the business, means that they will have both the knowledge and tools required to identify and resolve any issues quickly.
Time spent on this exercise, even in the face of pressure by production to have the system running again, will pay dividends in the long run as the drive train will be highly reliable and unlikely to fail again unexpectedly.
With a history spanning over 70 years, REICH-KUPPLUNGEN has built up unrivalled expertise in the design and manufacture of drive couplings for use across a wide range of industries and applications. The company has earned an enviable reputation not only for the quality and performance of their product range, but also for their ability to provide application and customer specific solutions through the company’s D2C (Design to Customer) philosophy.

Small, but Mighty Taking a Deeper Look at Power Quality Issues As global warming continues to threaten our planet and weather calamities are ever-present, the climate is changing, whether we are ready or not. Luckily, power and electrical companies are ready for the challenge, as they continue to unveil greener technology and drive the focus towards renewable energy sources. With fresh innovation, comes new challenges, particularly as the electric grid becomes increasingly more complicated and modernized. As communications over power lines increase, the need for a power quality analyzer becomes apparent. When it comes to power quality, a small change in voltage or signal can have a mighty impact on the power grid.
So, what can go wrong? Rapid Voltage Change (RVC) When it comes to renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar energy, fluctuation is the name of the game. Since the sun (or the wind) depends heavily on the weather, the time of day, and the location, the power generated is not constant, resulting in a highly fluctuating output. This phenomenon creates Rapid Voltage Changes (RVC) on the power line, which are small and quick disruptions, often leading to flickering lights or equipment tripping off line. Mains Signaling What do humans, animals, and electronics all have in common? We all need to communicate! For equipment on a power grid, communication comes in the form of small, ripple signals sent over the power lines. These signals can turn equipment on and off, depending on the energy load needed. Like
60|
all great communicators though, miscommunication is possible. Sometimes, ripple signals result in the wrong action, like street lights turning on in the morning and off when it gets dark. Inter Harmonics Inter harmonics are harmonic frequencies (multiples of the fundamental frequency) that are between the harmonic orders. Normally, they are very low – causing few, if any problems. Unfortunately, they become significantly amplified if the inter-harmonic frequency happens to be at a resonance value of a piece of equipment, potentially inducing catastrophic equipment failures. High-Speed Transients High-speed transients are small (microsecond), low energy transients, that are typically dampened out
by a few meters of cable – posing no significant threat. However, in areas with limited cable runs or solar panels, which are prone to rapid changes in solar radiation, repeating high speed transients are possible. In these cases, high-speed transients can damage sensitive electronics. Residential and small commercial properties with solar panels are particularly prone to the damage of repeating high-speed transients. Although many power quality problems are simply just small, rapid fluctuations in energy, signal, or frequency, they can create massive damage and induce a widespread impact on the power grid if not diagnosed early. With a smart, powerful, and easy-to-use power quality analyzer, these small problems, stay small, so the power stays on. www.megger.com or info@megger.com

Reduced installation points, Rupture disc with an integrated SGKKUB and SGKODV pressure relief devices, are rupture discs with integrated signalling, that reduce the number of required installation points and enable safe pressure relief, including monitoring of the rupture disc even at lowest burst pressures, and temperatures of up to 300 °C. The supervision of rupture discs is a relevant factor for many operators. Until now, this included additional effort, since the signalling device was a separate component. By integrating a signalling device into the rupture disc, REMBE is able to offer a simple, cost-effective solution for the monitoring of rupture discs.
Integration reduces the number of installation points and increases leak-tightness
to approx. 300 °C. It consists of either the popular KUB reverse acting rupture disc, or alternatively the three-layer rupture disc ODV, and the signalling membrane SGK. Whereas for conventional rupture discs and signalling the rupture disc had to be installed separately from the signalling device, the new SGKKUB and SGKODV can be easily installed and maintained as a single component.
With the SGKKUB, the signalling device as the top layer is facing away from the process and thus ideally protected. In the SGKODV three-layer rupture disc, the signalling is located between the sealing membrane and the upper part of the rupture disc.
Thanks to the sophisticated design it is not necessary to route a cable out of the rupture disc holder, which avoids the need for a cable gland and thus leads to increased leaktightness of the installation. The SGK rupture disc guarantees safe and reliable pressure relief and signalling even at the lowest burst pressures and temperatures up 64|

ensured monitoring: signalling KUB and ODV - proven classics for the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries The general term "forward acting rupture discs" covers all types whose domed side of the disc faces away from the process when installed, which also includes the ODV. The precisely defined breaking points of these rupture discs are attached to the top of the domed side in multi-layer
designs so that the risk of product accumulation or other damages by the process medium will be minimised. This ensures that the defined burst pressure can be permanently guaranteed. With reverse-acting rupture discs like KUB, the domed side of the disc faces towards the process, the precisely defined buckling pins are located on the underside of the domed side, on the vent side.
Since the process pressure of reverse-acting rupture discs acts on the domed side of the rupture disc, a comparatively high operating pressure ratio can be achieved with these rupture discs. The operating pressure ratio is the ratio of the working pressure present in the system (during normal operation) to the minimum burst pressure of the rupture disc.

Cable Drag Chains Enhance Design Flexibility For Bespoke Commercial Vehicles Cable drag chains are an essential component in any application where cables or hoses are required to move. Cable drag chains are commonly found as an integral part of machine tools, process and automation machinery, and overhead cranes. A lesser known, but equally important use for these systems is within the commercial vehicle sector, where robust yet lightweight plastic drag chains provide bespoke vehicle designers the freedom and flexibility needed for many innovative applications.
Although not initially apparent, we do see examples of cable drag chains within the commercial vehicle sector every day. Anyone of us unfortunate enough to have had a breakdown on the road, will most likely have been recovered by a vehicle where the flatbed slides backwards and down to allow the car to be loaded. A cable drag chain, often located out of view underneath the truck bed, protects all the electric cables, essential for the operation of the flatbed, emergency lighting and power winch. Other common uses for cable drag chains within this sector can be seen on car transporter vehicles, where they are an essential component in protecting and managing the cables and hydraulic lines which connect the two tiers of the vehicle. Plastic drag chain systems are a popular choice by bespoke vehicle designers as they contribute to reducing the overall weight of the vehicle through their lightweight design. Although subjected to a degree of environmental influence, from road dirt, rain and spray, the conditions under which these cable chains operate are much less harsh than those found for example within the machine tool sector, so the plastic solution is both a readily available and cost effective option. Ease of maintenance is another attribute of these systems, an important factor in ensuring vehicle reliability.

Queensgate Instruments 40 year anniversary 2019 marks the 40th anniversary for Queensgate Instruments, founded in 1979 by Ken Reay, Jim Ring, Tom Hicks, Paul Atherton and Martyn Wells. The first product was made in the start-up year - the FPI Optics, which was to make servo stabilised FabryPerot Interferometers for use on large scale telescopes in astronomy. Six years later, in 1985, Queensgate Instruments released its first range of nanopositioning products pioneering their use in microscopy along with the MicroFilter (arranged miniaturised tuneable Fabry Perot Filters with fibre pigtails), which evolved into a Network Monitoring product used in high bandwidth optical telecoms. Applications encompass microscopy, astronomy and telescopes, optoelectronics, semiconductors, robotic surgery, defence and space, and hard disk drive testing. The ability to move and to measure to sub atomic precision using capacitance micrometers and piezo electric actuators and has placed the company at the forefront of this rapidly developing technology. Queensgate Instruments published the NanoPositioning book in 1997 to standardise terms and explain the technology, led by Tom Hicks and Paul Atherton. The contents include descriptions of the accuracy, precision and trueness of the products and how this delivers the best results. Developing the book further, they explain how

ENGINEERING UPDATE
ELTA FANS IMPROVES PRECISION AND OUTPUT WITH NEW MACHINERY INVESTMENT Elta Fans’ Applied Technology division has invested in two new machines for its specialist production plant in Fareham, Hampshire.
Having been installed at the end of 2018 as part of the factory’s planned maintenance programme, the new press brake machine and jig are already increasing the productivity of the plant, and highlight the company’s dedication to using advanced technology. The division designs, manufactures, and supplies fans for a variety of specialist OEM applications, including power generation, offshore oil and gas, agriculture, and marine. Capable of delivering both standard and bespoke products, the company utilises expert knowledge and the latest technology to develop solutions for customers across the globe. The Fareham site processes raw materials to produce fan casings and ancillaries, before assembling them and selling to these customers. The first new machine is the Bystronic Xact Smart 100, which replaces a 1975 press brake and represents an investment of over £60,000. The old machine operated on one axis, which meant that more set ups were required to fold parts. The age of the machine also meant that wear and tear could potentially reduce the quality of the output, which was the primary motivation behind investing in a replacement. The function of the Bystronic Xact Smart 100 is to fold metal – a critical part of the Sheetmetal process. Elta Fans Applied Technology is a global leader in bespoke
78|
fan manufacturing, and the Sheetmetal department has been an integral part of the plant’s ability to support a wide range of sales markets. The machine benefits from quicker setup times, and significantly improves on the usability of its predecessor. Combined with enhanced reliability, the Bystronic Xact Smart 100 has increased the output capabilities of the Farehambased plant significantly. Matt Targett, Operations Manager at Elta Fans, comments: “We are dedicated to investing in modern technology, both in order to maximise our current capabilities, but also to develop better products. We know that our specialist factory is a key selling point for customers, and purchasing new machines provides the opportunity to up-skill our workforce, and ultimately improve staff morale.” Another addition to the Fareham site is a new jig, which is used to help assemble 2 metre hub impellers. Quality impeller manufacture and assembly revolves around precision, with consistency of blade angles directly relating to a fan’s operational efficiency. The introduction of a pneumatic jig means that blade angles no longer have to be set by hand, which is a significant benefit given the numerous variations of impellers that are manufactured at the site.
The new jig, which is used by those trained in building 550mm hub impellers, will also help to increase capacity in the 2m impeller market, exploiting the pneumatic design to drive improvements in method. It was introduced at an investment of almost £20,000, but as Matt Targett concludes, investments such as these are made with the future in mind: “We are committed to investing in new equipment, especially if it will benefit our customers in the long-term. We are immensely proud of our ability to produce unrivalled products, utilising the latest technology in order to meet our customers’ demands. Our Sheetmetal setup has been tremendously successful, and has even been replicated at other plants in Elta Group across the globe. “The introduction of a new jig and the Bystronic Xact Smart 100 are indicative of our innovative approach, and have ensured that our operation remains at the cutting edge moving into the future. We are very excited to see how they improve our capabilities over time.” For more information on Elta Fans Applied Technology, please visit: www.eltafans.com/divisions/appliedtechnology/

PROFIsafe-Module: Extra Safety Functional safety of plant and machinery is of vital importance in production. The NORD SK TU4-PNS option module from NORD DRIVESYSTEMS assists the simple implementation of safe responses. In combination with a safety PLC, the drive electronics reliably communicate over the existing PROFINET via PROFIsafe. Functional Safety is becoming increasingly important as a fundamental component of modern machine and plant design and it is an indispensable aspect of the drive systems from NORD. At present, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS supplies frequency inverters with integrated STO and SS1. The drive specialist provides fail-safe communication and safe movement functions according to IEC 61800-5 with the SK TU4-PNS PROFIsafe module. Functions such as SLS (Safety Limited Speed), SSR (Safe Speed Range), SDI (Safe Direction), SOS (Safe Operation Stop) and SSM (Safe Speed Monitor) can be integrated and expand the drive units’ safe stop functions. With this, the PROFIsafe interface module provides comprehensive safety for the reliable operation of plant and machinery. The NORD SK TU4-PNS PROFIsafe module meets the most stringent safety requirements and ensures secure communication in PROFINET environments
Reliable communication of safety-relevant data PROFIsafe is the world's leading and generally used technology for safety applications for production and process automation. With SIL3 and PLe (Performance Level e) Category 4, the fail-safe communication protocol fulfils the most stringent safety requirements. The PROFIsafe fail-safe protocol extension for PROFINET enables standard and fail-safe information to be transmitted with integrated functional safety between the higher level machine or the plant control system and the NORD drives in a single network cable.
Operate drives safely The PROFIsafe bus interface SK TU4-PNS monitors safe compliance with the limit values and provides safe inputs and outputs. If a limit value is exceeded or undershot, the bus interface switches to a safe state. The voltage is disconnected from all outputs, input information is reset and transmitted to the higher level fail-safe controller. This is essential for the use of the PROFIsafe module.
82|
The PROFIsafe module NORD SK TU4-PNS provides extra functional safety: If the user reaches through the light grid at full speed, the system is stopped. At the safe speed it continues to run
Integration of safety functions into the drive unit offers many advantages in comparison with a drive solution with discrete safety technology. Less installation space is required, the number of external safety components is fewer and the system is modularly scalable. The amount of wiring is reduced to a minimum as only a network cable is required. Another advantage is the global availability of the security-related machine data.

Pintsch Bubenzer Appoints New Mining Sales Specialist Pintsch Bubenzer, a manufacturer of high performance disc and drum brakes for severe duty applications, has named Daiel Hoffmans, global sales director mining.
Hoffmans will be based at headquarters in Germany but will lead a global team, as the company looks to further raise its profile in the Americas and other mining hotbeds around the world. Pintsch Bubenzer offers a variety of products that were originally renowned for use with high duty cycle container handling equipment at ports and harbors. However, it has successfully expanded into mines, wind energy, and the industrial crane market in recent years, where its emergency brakes are increasingly being installed on electric overhead traveling (EOT) cranes in the steel sector, in particular. Standout mining projects include successful installations at Oyu Tolgoi (Mongolia), Elecon (India) and Spence (Chile). Hoffmans said: “The product range is proven in a multitude of industries where equipment is required to work close to its capacity and at near maximum speed, often in 24/7 operation. However, despite the synergies between many of these marketplaces, only by immersing ourselves deeper into the mining sector itself can we truly realize our potential and pioneer continued improvement of safety—most importantly—and productivity. With exclusive focus from my team and myself on one industry, we can promote high performance disc and drum brakes for mines, beyond a range with generic benefits.”
84|
Hoffmans has earmarked the Americas, Africa, Australasia, and parts of Asia as geographies of potential, where conveyor belts, cranes, stackerreclaimers, excavators, and unloading equipment are among the heavy machinery being employed on a variety of mining projects. He has already implemented strategies to engage a select group of decision makers, much like Pintsch Bubenzer has achieved in other heavy-duty sectors. Joel Cox, president at Pintsch Bubenzer USA, said: “It’s a noteworthy appointment because it states our intent in the mining sector, which is an area of great interest in my geography—and others across the world. Daiel will be addressing decision makers as a representative of their industry, versus someone working a mile wide but only an inch deep across many sectors. We have successfully introduced our braking concepts to a number of new sectors in recent times, but it always took market knowledge and the right personnel to achieve our goals, and in Daiel’s recruitment we are working from that blueprint once again.” Hoffmans has been working with Pintsch Bubenzer products in numerous roles since 2005. He also brings a wealth of broader experience to the role, most recently in a management position at Faiveley Transport, a manufacturer and supplier of equipment for the
railway industry, where he worked with Stemmann Technik GmbH, Gerken Group, Akapp-Stemmann BV, and TransTech. Prior to that he was in a sales role at Stemmann Technik. Hoffmans added: “I understand the product range well and look forward to continuing its evolution in the mining industry. I’m particularly excited about exploring the prospect of increasing the modularity of our solutions. I have a history of working with highend equipment, which will serve me well as I conduct site visits and learn more about the immediate and longer term requirements of our existing and prospective customers.” Mining professionals will note Pintsch Bubenzer’s recent launch of ibrake®, a multidimensional app, downloadable to cell phones and other smart devices, featuring a dashboard for users, maintenance videos, parts lists, technical drawings, lifecycle documentation, and access to 24-hour support. Parts can also be ordered through the app, which sends service alerts to customers. Users can utilize the app to scan digital barcodes, sometimes called quick response codes, to direct them to product information created by the manufacturer.

SL ENGINEERING LTD SELECTED FOR SHARING IN GROWTH AEROSPACE PRODUCTIVITY PROGRAMME TO DOUBLE SALES AND BEAT OVERSEAS COMPETITION • SL Engineering Ltd joins Sharing in Growth and aims to “double in five years” to over £12 million turnover by 2023 • Demand for specialised complex rigid tube assembly aircraft components fuels growth • Continued success and expansion may trigger new factory and additional jobs Productivity experts Sharing in Growth (SiG) have selected a rapidly growing Lincolnshire- based engineering firm SL Engineering Ltd to join their award-winning business transformation programme. SL Engineering, based near Grantham, produces specialised rigid tube assemblies, complex fuel manifolds, core engine pipes and flexi-metallic rigid pipes used in some of the world’s most demanding fuel, hydraulic and other critical fluid conveyance applications. The company has experienced 87% growth in the last three years, particularly from aerospace where its customers include Rolls-Royce, Eaton Aerospace, Safran Aerosystems, Kawasaki, and GKN. To continue this rapid growth, increasing its turnover from almost £6 million to over £12 million by 2023, the company applied for SiG’s support to ensure it can efficiently deliver this growth, improve existing customer satisfaction and successfully compete to win even more new business. After a detailed and robust business diagnostic, it has now been accepted onto the government-supported, industry-led programme. Said joint managing director Shaun Stevenson: “SL Engineering has a great reputation with our global customer base and we’ve worked hard and invested heavily in business systems, machinery and people to achieve this phenomenal growth. But, like most UK supply chain companies, we face growing fierce competition from low-cost countries and need to successfully deliver cost savings and simultaneously achieve steep production build-rate increases. “At the same time, we are dealing with the challenges of doubling in size while ensuring that we maintain our existing sound customer relationships built on trust and integrity to continue to meet our quality and delivery promises to customers. So, having worked with the ADS led SC21 aerospace improvement standard, we recognised that it was time to scale up and join Sharing in Growth in order to undertake a total business transformation.” Among the first priorities for SL Engineering on the SiG programme will be to create a lighthouse cell for one of the largest volume product lines. This will enable Sharing in Growth to support the implementation of world-class productivity standards which can then be shared across other production cells in the business. There will also be a focus on supply chain management, cost reduction, cash flow and increased machining efficiency. This will be supported by structured data gathering and analysis and engaging the workforce through effective communication and involvement to ensure
86|
that, despite increasing their headcount by 60% to more than 80 people, the whole team can become involved to support change and expansion. With SiG’s support, SL Engineering will also be looking at options to build ambitious future capacity through planned infrastructure growth such as a new factory and the creation of additional jobs. Said Sharing in Growth CEO Andy Page: “I am delighted to welcome SL Engineering onto our Sharing in Growth programme. We understand the challenges they face and have more than 2,000 years of industry expertise across our team to help them fulfil their ambitions. We’ve now supported over 60 beneficiaries to secure more than £4 billion in contracts two years ahead of schedule. This is equivalent to over 7,000 jobs so we are well on target to safeguard 10,000 UK jobs by 2020. Our programme is effective because it has the unique scope and scale, commensurate with the challenge of helping programme participants to win a larger share of the global aerospace market.” A not-for-profit organisation, Sharing in Growth is supported by the Regional Growth Fund and by more than £150 million in private investment. Over 60 companies, with some 10,000 employees, have benefitted from the Sharing in Growth programme across the UK. Each company participates in a bespoke and intense training and business transformation programme which focuses on leadership, culture and operational capability delivered by SiG’s own 100 strong team of business coaches as well as a bank of world-leading experts including The University of Cambridge’s Institute for Manufacturing, Deloitte, Industry Forum and the National Physical Laboratory. Companies interested in joining the Sharing in Growth programme should visit: www.sig-uk.org/apply.

ENGINEERING UPDATE
Is legacy DRAM still Since DRAM burst onto the scene in the late 1960s it has truly revolutionised computing systems at every level and it is not stopping with its latest incarnation, DDR4. DDR5 is also widely reported to be available from 2022, according to various industry sources. Implementing DRAM into new-build systems might not be as straightforward as buying it off-the-shelf to plug in and play. In many cases, the latest DRAM doesn’t necessarily equate to the best solution and can cause systems to work ineffectively or even fail. By understanding the requirements of the system and what information is being processed first, memory (and to a certain extent storage) can be looked at in more detail. But why go to all this bother? Memory is memory, isn’t it? Not quite. It comes in multiple lengths and thicknesses and with different capacities and performance. It’s like buying a car—each has pros and cons, some are similar and some are vastly different. For specialised applications, rather than personal computers and desktops, an older type of DRAM such as DDR1, DDR2 or DDR3 could be suitable as it may have the performance characteristics required to run the application, such as a lower capacity and speed. For projects that may require longevity, in some cases ten years plus, simply upgrading to the latest DRAM is not an option. Units could be deployed globally, perhaps in remote environments where it is not
92|
possible to maintain them. If something does go wrong, then a like-for-like replacement would be needed. This is why we do not expect to see legacy DDR1, DDR2 and DDR3 disappearing anytime soon. There is still a requirement for long-term projects across a wide variety of industries. When the likes of DDR1, 2 and 3 were initially designed in, obsolescence would have (hopefully) been taken into account. Some of the more specialised DRAM manufacturers, such as ATP Electronics, still supply DDR1, DDR2, DDR3 and even SDRAM for industrial markets. Earlier we mentioned that DRAM comes in different sizes and capacities and ATP manufactures a wide range of these solutions at their state-of-the-art facility in Taiwan. It’s true to say that ATP offers a complete DRAM and SDRAM portfolio.

being made? Two of the top three manufacturers of DRAM, Samsung and SK Hynix, don’t really ‘do’ legacy (DDR1 & DDR2) as they are focused on the mass consumer market, which is why there is still a place for specialist manufacturers. Micron, however, has an indirect involvement in the DDR2 market and has a license agreement with ATP to manufacture legacy Micron DDR2 SO-DIMMS, UDIMMS and RDIMMs. DDR2 is still widely used in the USA, Europe and Japan in high reliability and mission-critical environments. As Micron naturally wants to move onto newer technology, it makes perfect sense that a module house such as ATP continues manufacturing DDR2 for demanding applications after Micron announced end of life (EOL) notices for these modules. ATP manufactures these DDR2 modules according to the equivalent specifications and testing/validation processes of the respective Micron part number. There are more steps in the manufacturing process for new DRAM, which can lead to more defects and other failures when compared to legacy DDR1, 2 & 3. The tolerance requirements for newer modules are also much tighter, which gives a smaller process window in which the Fabs and tools must operate. These tight process windows frequently shift unexpectedly, causing yield problems and worsening quality. In extreme cases, the suppliers are forced to scrap or downgrade a large
portion of their line, which interrupts the supply of memory to their customer base. All new designs must go through lengthy debugging cycles. For an industrial application this could put the customer base at risk, as it may take months or even years to fully implement changes in the production process. Product support on legacy DRAM overcomes these problems as it has a robust manufacturing process, consistent performance and low failure rates, plus it is not prone to part change notifications. ATP DRAM modules meet the growing need for accelerated performance in memory-intensive and HPC applications to keep up with escalating data process requirements as the Internet of Things and Industrial IoT become more universal. ATP DRAM memory modules deliver robust performance, durable build and the right density for the toughest workloads. Coupled with additional value services such as; fixed bill of materials, industrial temperatures, conformal coating and antisulfur resistors, ATP DRAM becomes a very attractive proposition indeed.
