Cummins chooses LB Foster for automated engine transfer towline conveyors Cummins is a global power leader that designs, manufactures, sells and services diesel engines and related technology around the world. The company serves its customer through its network of 500 company-owned and independent distributor facilities and more than 5,200 dealer locations in over 190 countries. Approximately 1,000 people work at the Daventry plant, manufacturing high horsepower diesel and gas engines which range from 38 to 91 litres. The engines are made primarily for the international market; they are exported all over the world to be used in a variety of industries from marine to mining. Every engine is spray painted in the specific colour requested by the customer. The prestigious contract awarded to LB Foster is for two automated systems to transport the engines through two new paint processing lines. Both lines have been designed to process a maximum of 10 engines at a time, each weighing up to 12 tonnes. One line has already been finished with the second due for completion later this year.

LB Foster Materials Handling has begun work on an automated engine transfer contract for the engine manufacturing plant of Cummins in Daventry.
Cummins have had previous experience of working with LB Foster as the company has manufactured conveyor systems for several assembly lines in Daventry. As a result the equipment is known to be well engineered, robust and very reliable. Ian Bennion is the manufacturing engineering leader for Cummins, he explains why LB Foster was selected for this important project, “Automation in manufacturing is quite a niche market however it was a still a competitive tender. “Confidence in LB Foster’s ability to complete the task was the deciding factor. They were able to demonstrate that they had already designed and installed similar lines for other companies by showing us professional photographs and video evidence. Automate for increased safety and efficiency In the past the large diesel engines were mounted on carts and moved manually through the different sectors of the paint process. The decision to automate the lines was taken as part of a lean manufacturing initiative by Cummins.
Each line is split into two in-floor towline conveyors divided by a paint spraying booth. At the start of the process an engine is picked up by an overhead crane, secured onto a cart before starting its slow journey down the line, where it first enters the engine wash facility. This is followed by a trim process where sections of the engine which do not require painting are masked off. Another crane is then used to position the engine into the paint spraying booth and from there it is put back onto another cart to be towed by the second conveyor to the end of the line. This process transports the engine into the drying oven, through post paint trim, inspection and then finally it is transferred by crane onto a shipping skid. Bennion comments, “We’ve developed a close relationship with the LB Foster team over the years and they’ve done a very good job on the first part of this project. They collaborated well with our other suppliers and the installation crew was absolutely fantastic.

Events 3D Systems to Spearhead 3D Printing in Medical Revolution at TCT Show + Personalize 2014 Chester, UK, June 20th, 2014: 3D Systems is a company that never shies away from the biggest issues in 3D printing, which is why TCT Show + Personalize is proud to announce the industry juggernaut will be tackling the red hot topic of 3D printing in the medical arena in the Day Three keynote session of the event.
July 2014 going to grow and 3D Systems, with the expertise of Medical Modeling, is a fantastic brand to give 3D printing in the medical sector a platform." This will be the 19th edition of the annual TCT Show, the UK's leading 3D printing, additive manufacturing and product development showcase and the calibre of the keynote speakers proves 2014's outing really is a 'must attend' event. The show runs for three days this year and features nearly 200 exhibitors and as many as 10,000 visitors from over 50 countries.
Leading this major presentation will be Andy Christensen, VicePresident of Personalized Surgery and Medical Devices at 3D Systems, whose company Medical Modeling was acquired by 3D Systems this year. Medical Modeling pioneered 3D printing-centric personalised surgery and patient-specific medical device solutions with FDA-cleared manufacturing processes that utilised Geomagic Freeform modelling software, haptic tools and advanced manufacturing stereolithography machines, among other technologies. Using 3D printing in this way is transforming how doctors are treating patients, particularly in the fields of reconstruction, orthotics and prosthetics. Under Andy Christensen's leadership, 3D Systems has consolidated all of its healthcare endeavours into a single unit creating the largest 3D printing-based personalised surgery. In 2014 alone, 3D Systems has been making major headlines thanks to the part its technology has played in bringing about real medical firsts, such as the Ekso-Suit, which was 3D-printed using 3D Systems' technology for paraplegic Amanda Boxtel; or Hammerhead Design & Development teaming up with 3D Systems' Quickparts to produce custom medical device trays. Christensen stated: "Over the past 15 years Medical Modeling has pioneered the field of personalised surgery using technology from 3D Systems. Anatomical modelling was the first application of additive manufacturing to medicine, taking CT scans and turning them into highly accurate 3D printed models. The next step has been the development of Virtual Surgical Planning, whereby a surgical plan is developed on the computer and brought to the operating room by 3D printing templates, models, guides and implants. "Now, as part of 3D Systems we are transitioning to a technology solution provider, which means we have more than one set of tools to meet our customers' needs, be they surgeons or medical device manufacturers. This is an exciting development for us and allows us to continue to grow our service business while helping others realise value through access to our collective expertise." Conveniently Calibrate Plant Vacuum Gauges Why do vacuum gauges need to be calibrated? The largest uncertainty when using vacuum gauges on a process plant is knowing when the process has caused drift or shifts of calibration. Many processes handle vapours and, if any condensation or deposition happens, the chances are it will also happen in the vacuum gauge. Many such gauges - Pirani, cold cathose and ion gauges - use thermal or ionisation cross-section measurements to infer the level of vacuum being experienced and they have filaments, cathodes and other hardware, all of which may be coated with by-products from the process. Even more rugged gauges such as capacitance manometers will be affected by depositions or particulates because any deposition will have mass and the gauge will weigh it, especially if it has a low range and therefore a very thin diaphragm.
With the development of Chell's on-site UKAS calibration service, they have developed CalCube both as a portable vacuum calibration system with which to offer an on-site service but, for customers who would prefer their own facility, a convenient, tried and tested system. CalCube complies with BS ISO3567:2011 which specifically covers the design and use of vacuum calibration systems and incorporates an ISO/Dis stainless steel calibration chamber with geometry optimised to ensure that all gauges connected see the same level of vacuum so that comparisons may be made. The development of a technique Having its own ISO IEC 17025:2005 accredited UKAS laboratory with the lowest uncertainties for Vacuum in the UK, Chell are well placed to prepare CalCube for on-site gauge calibrations. The Transfer Standards fitted to CalCube are calibrated in the laboratory both before and after an on-site calibration job so that the confidence level of the calibration is the highest possible. CalCube comparing two manufacturer's Capacitance Manometers
Chell's CalCube is a convenient solution to vacuum gauge calibration As processes move away from their design parameter due to gauge “drift”, little about the quality of the process can be inferred from the instrumentation readings, so diagnosis is down to a skilled operator recognising when a batch of product does not conform. This is too late! If the process is sensitive to the level of vacuum being achieved, then the cost of losing a batch could be astronomical many times the cost of maintaining the plant properly in many cases. With the inherent lack of ruggedness of many vacuum gauges, it is imperative that plant gauges are regularly calibrated and that the operator has spare, calibrated gauges ready to substitute as soon as he fears the process may have drifted away from specification. The difficulties of calibrating vacuum in-situ Unfortunately, it is very difficult to carry out in-situ vacuum calibrations due to the amount of hardware needed to establish a suitable level of vacuum in a situation where a calibration standard gauge may be compared. Not the least of concerns is the possible cross-contamination of the standard by a contaminated sensor under test. Another is the difficulty of access to many on-plant gauges. So it has become tradition for gauges to be removed regularly from the plant and shipped to an external calibration laboratory for re-calibration and, in many cases, adjustment to compensate for the effects of contamination. CalCube showing its useful vacuum coupling storage
CalCube is constructed within a rugged, wheeled flight-case type enclosure having just a 13A mains plug yet containing dry diaphragm backing and turbomolecular pumps with high vacuum isolation valves. Over 40 year's experience of calibrating vacuum gauges have gone into CalCube's design, which includes such capabilities as calibrating both rising and falling pressures very accurately using a pair of ultrafine Chell CMF valves. Fitting easily into almost any estate car, CalCube comes with lifting handles to aid safe removal from a vehicle or lifting up steps, etc. A removable side panel is foam lined with cut-outs to hold all the common mating vacuum connector systems - of course, custom connectors may be purchased and housed for specific applications. Choice of vacuum Transfer Standards will be an important decision, which is aided by Chell's years of experience. These standards, when not fitted to CalCube are housed in another, matching flight-case, ready for convenient return to Chell's calibration lab. for scheduled UKAS calibration. Chell's in-house vacuum standards consist of three high-accuracy capacitance manometers having 20 years of continuous calibration history at national Standard level and these are monitored on a daily basis by a Spinning Rotor Gauge whose ball-flange assembly is also calibrated annually at National Standard level. At the atmospheric pressure end of the scale, the vacuum straight line generated by the capacitance manometers is calibrated against our 32” Schwien Merco-Master manometer giving us the lowest uncertainties in that pressure regime. Chell's customers thus enjoy the accumulated vacuum calibration skills of over 40 years and, should they have specific different requirements, Chell has the skills to customise CalCube to suit.

Gill oil level sensor prevents bearing failure on helicopter Gill Research & Development Limited (Gill R&D), a UK based leading electronic engineering company, has developed an oil level sensor for the rear rotor hub of the CH-53 helicopter to help prevent tail rotor bearing failure. Tail rotor bearing failure is a catastrophic failure which normally results in the loss of the aircraft. As part of a research study to prevent these failures, a major European manufacturer of helicopters needed to be able to measure the oil level in the rotor hub oil reservoir. This is a demanding environment, with the rotor hub rotating up to 800rpm, an operating temperature range of -40ºC to +90°C and extremely high levels of vibration and shock loading.
Gill R&D for liquid level sensors, meant it was perfectly suited to this application. A solid state device with no moving parts eliminates any reliability problems caused by vibration and high rotation speeds, and the fully potted, integrated electronics meant the sensor was a self –contained device. Produced entirely from Titanium for minimal weight, the sensor was fully sealed to the 0.3bar pressure rating, ensuring no oil leakage through the device due to the high centrifugal forces and inverted operation.
The design incorporated the AN814-6 threaded mounting, 1.65mm and 1.9mm locking wire positions, and for additional robustness and reliability an aerospace Additionally, the sensor had to have a approved connector was integrated into the housing. The typical power minimum weight to reduce eccentric consumption of 10mA @12 volts was also achieved, meeting the requirements of the battery or energy harvesting power source. Using Cranes to Boost Productivity Chris Lindley-Smith, sales director at Street Crane Company, outlines how modern cranes play a crucial role in maintaining factory productivity. Context Thirty years ago a typical small engineering workshop would probably have had one all-purpose crane. This would have served all needs from unloading raw materials right through to product assembly and shipping. Waiting was inevitable. Fast forward. Though the tide of competition is now global. Lean manufacturing is the name of the game. Cranes can keep workshops buzzing. Examples Siemens Industry Automation and Drive Technologies is a modern light engineering workshop. Here six light crane systems, with up to six metres span, capable of lifts of up to two tonnes meet all handling needs. These were supplied complete with chain hoists and independent gantry support to lifting for lighter loads. Operating at the heavy end of the engineering business, Mining
Machinery Developments (MMD) in Derbyshire make sizing plant for mines and quarries. A mix of overhead travelling cranes (OTC’s) is easily adapted to meet future expansion. Three 20 tonne overhead cranes in each of two new bays run on full-length freestanding 60 metre gantries. For heavier lifts of up to 40 tonnes, they may be used in tandem and weight distributed by a spreader beam. Having adequate cranage in the production area underpins productivity as the highly skilled workforce can avoid down time waiting for cranes to become available. The new bays are also equipped with 10 one-tonne jib cranes, with seven units in one bay and three in the adjoining bay. Each jib crane services a workstation manned by two welders or platers. The slewing jib cranes are attached to be dismantled, enabling the jibs to be readily re-located as production needs change. Within the assembly bays, are two double girder cranes of 50 tonnes and one of 25 tonnes. One of the larger units has an auxiliary
Light crane systems are an integral part of the production process at Siemens where drive systems are assembled.
15 tonne hoist to give greater materials Specifying Cranes It’s worth taking time to brief your crane supplier thoroughly about your production process. Crane manufacturers will strive for safety and will optimise crane speed with stability to ensure the safe transportation of loads. Manufacturers also need to know about the intensity of crane use, both the number of lifts and movements per day and the proportion of loads at the upper end of the rated load. This enables selection of the correct mechanism rating for sustained and reliable operation. It is also worth considering how to customise and accessorise the crane to improve operations, from simple load spreading beams to the use of bespoke handling equipment to improve safety and productivity. International competition won’t go away, assisted by the right cranes can ensure UK manufacturing remains viable and competitive.

Hydrostatic Level Measurement There are many types of level measurement technology. For hydrographic surveys, water table and borehole measurement, hydrostatic pressure measurement is one of the most reliable. Hydrostatic pressure is described as being the pressure exerted by a fluid at equilibrium to a given point within the fluid, due to the force of gravity. A liquid column above the pressure sensor creates hydrostatic pressure, which is a direct indicator of the liquid level. In Europe the standard unit of measurement is metres of water gauge (mWG), also referred to as metres of water column (mWC), or metres
of H2O (mH2O). ESI Technology design and manufacture a range of pressure transmitters for hydrostatic level applications. They are available in a range of diameters and can be calibrated to any unit of measurement. It is also necessary to use a special vented cable so that barometric pressure does not aect the true hydrostatic pressure measurement. Also, a desiccant housing at surface level is required to prevent moisture ingress over time. Stilling tubes and weighted nose cones are also available.

Socomec Modulys GP2.0 – inMarket leaders in integrated power solutions – Socomec – will present the Modulys GP2.0 at the Datacentre Transformation Conference on 8th July at Manchester University.
Critical buildings and facilities are challenged with constantly evolving demands on energy performance. The supply of reliable, cost-effective power which can be scaled to meet the rapidly changing demands of a Data Centre is a vital component of the overall performance of the data facility. Socomec’s Modulys Green Power UPS - designed for complete vertical and horizontal modularity and scalability is ideal for use in the most demanding critical IT applications and Data Centres. On show at the Data Centre Transformation Conerence, the range offers power scalability up to 600kW, making it ideal for unscheduled site upgrades or incremental power evolutions. Furthermore, the installed power of a single system can be increased up to 200kW by adding power modules in increments of 25kW. For increased power and maximum flexibility, 3 parallel systems can be configured horizontally to achieve 600kW. Achieving the desired power scaling is
48|
simple: the units feature a redundant architecture employing parallel PlugIn modules. When a new power or battery module is plugged in, the system automatically self-configures to bring the new capacity online. Andrew Wilkinson, Regional Managing Director, Socomec, comments; “Socomec’s Modulys GP2.0 delivers unrivalled flexibility – solving some of our customers’ greatest challenges in terms of redundancy and future availability. Because the system is modular – and the cabinet is free from electronic components – potential failure modes have been eliminated and endof-life criticality ceases to be an issue. Furthermore, the system also allows for the easy integration of future modules. Rather than overspecify – and ovespend - in order to guarantee that a system is futureproof, the Modulys range means that Facilities Managers can now scale as and when they need to. Additional redundancy can be achieved by introducing one more battery and power module – so there is no need to duplicate the system hardware to achieve redundancy. With no single point of failure
– and zero risk of fault propogation – the Modulys is totally resilient and guarantees optimum power availability.” With real-time Hot Swap functionality, module maintenance is simple, fast and safe – avoiding any risk of downtime as the mean time to repair (MTTR) is reduced to a minimum. The Modulys range has been engineered to be highly adaptable; based on a modular, rack-mounting system, it has been designed to work with hot / cold aisle arrangements. Easy to integrate within existing IT infrastsructure, the Modulys is also easy to position and assemble thanks to its light, empty cabinets and independent modules. Andrew Wilkinson continues; “In order to address the most important industry challenges – of today and tomorrow the latest product developments require a specialized and inter-disciplinary approach to provide high performance, reliable and cost-effective power solutions that are flexible enough to be scaled to meet the rapidly changing demands of Data Centres. Socomec invests heavily in pioneering research and product design in order to deliver world-class innovations that solve our industry’s greatest challenges in terms of energy availability, efficiency, flexibility, monitoring and sustainability – whilst also minimizing Total Cost of Ownership.”
