Optimising productivity at warehouse packing stations:

HARTING’s MICA edge computer enables workflow optimisation HARTING’s MICA modular industrial edge computer is at the heart of a system for workflow optimisation at warehouse packing stations that offers the benefits of process optimisation for increased productivity as well as integrating incompatible hardware and software and simplifying the jobs of the packing operatives.

The system, requiring minimal outlay for fast return on investment (ROI) and ongoing reductions in operating costs, has proved its value in successful trials at HARTING’s own warehouse packing facility in the company’s state-of-the-art connector manufacturing plant at Espelkamp in Germany.

By utilising other features of the modular MICA device, successive additional KPIs and extra processes can be captured through its operating software. For example, by integrating an RFID antenna function module with dual antenna ports, it becomes possible to identify both the tagged transport containers of packed parts and the employee’s personal ID card.

The MICA computer can thus automatically log on and assign the packed parts to the employee’s unique identification record. As a result, the packing process information can be integrated directly into a piecework payment system.

By adding a single MICA device into the packaging process at a typical packing station, it becomes possible to reduce the overall packer’s process time by a factor of at least ten, representing a major productivity improvement.

Three key benefits of the system can be summarised as follows: 1.

Increased productivity at the packing station: Several separate operations that were previously carried out independently and manually are now automated and integrated by the MICA computer.

2.

Integration of incompatible hardware and software: The open software architecture of MICA allows communication between incompatible devices and integrates them into the factory ERP/MES system.

The system is designed to address the challenges that are typically encountered where a customer order requires a wide range of separate component parts to be packed and shipped in one or more cartons.

Previously, packers might have to interface with a range of different stand-alone computer control devices such as a weighing scale, a PLC that controls the packaging machine, and a printer for the labelling of the packaging films. In such a configuration, the employee would have to operate all these devices individually, enter the values manually into the management ERP system, and manually adapt work instructions.

By integrating a MICA edge computer at the packing station, the new HARTING approach combines all these actions, automatically executing the intermediate steps and transferring all the data from one system to the next and into the ERP system. For example, using SAP data transfer via OPC UA to SAP MII (SAP for Manufacturing Integration & Intelligence), the work instruction can be transferred from ERP via RFC, transferred to MICA via JSON, translated in STEP 7 and loaded into the PLC. The packer now has only one user interface. The number of manual work steps is drastically reduced

Simplification of the packer’s workstation job: Several operations that were previously carried out separately and manually are now integrated and automated, leading to a tenfold improvement in productivity.

Further benefits of the MICA system result from the fact that the hardware is very compact and meets IP67 environmental protection standards, allowing it to be located in harsh factory and warehouse environments. In addition, the modular hardware design allows further enhancements and modifications to meeting changing application requirements.

Rulmeca extend power range of compact 80LS asynchronous motorised drum Rulmeca has increased the nominal output performance of its 80LS drum motors within an 81.5mm diameter roller, from a maximum of 120 watts to a maximum of 160 watts.

The 33% percent performance increase was achieved through the redesign of the stator. The shortest available width of the new drum motor is 300 mm. To optimally transfer the high power to the belt, the drum shell can be provided with a rubber coating with a maximum permissible thickness of 5mm.

“Our 80LS is the world’s first 80 diameter drum motor with an output power of 160 watts in asynchronous design,” says General Manager, Grahame Halligan of Rulmeca UK Unit Handling.

Smart Solutions from AutoCoding Systems AutoCoding Systems has recognised that there is a growing requirement to communicate with and collect data from a wide range of devices, as well as interface to various business information systems to enable factories to work smarter.

The latest concept developed using the latest software engineering technologies is the AutoCoding IIoT Gateway. IIoT technology provides consistent mechanisms for cross-application and cross-device communication. This enables the collection of rich data and statistics from production line devices which previously could not easily participate in the movement towards a connected factory floor. Miniature connector range opens up smaller applications for pluggable connection systems Two smaller variants from WAGO introduce applications such as PCBs to the benefits of pluggable connection.

T

he 890 and 891 Series WINSTAÂŽ pluggable connectors offer fast installation for conductors from 0.25-1.5 mm2. This makes the new variants ideal for devices such as LED lighting modules, which due to technological advances are becoming increasingly smaller. Pluggable connection offers distinct advantages over traditional screw connectors, including lower installation time, reduced risk of wiring errors, improved reliability and lower costs.

With the introduction of WINSTA MINI, the WINSTA family has now been extended to allow smaller devices such as sensors, actuators, lights and bus cables to be quickly and easily integrated into the WINSTA pluggable connection system. This helps to address the growing demand for cabling systems that are flexible, reliable and expandable to meet the needs of increasingly complex building and lighting systems.

Whilst it was previously possible to retrofit devices for pluggable connection by refitting with a different housing, and making the electrical connection between the connector and the PCB terminals manually, this was typically a complex and timeconsuming process. With WINSTA MINI, the connectors can be soldered directly onto the PCB, saving installers a huge amount of time.

WAGO’s WINSTA pluggable connection system uses push in cage clamp technology to greatly reduce installation time compared to traditional screw terminals, and includes a wide range of products such as plugs, sockets, distribution boxes, pre-formed cable assemblies and accessories.

Offering a compact size with a pole pitch of just 4.4 mm, the WINSTA MINI is ideal for tight spaces, while straight and angled sockets and plugs make it easier to work around other wiring.

LasX Ripping Engine Revolutionises Digital Print With On-The-Fly Laser Processing The LasX Ripping Engine is the brain behind the digitalisation and collation of all aspects of carton and label manufacturing processes. The technology makes it possible for the Laser to change between different products on the fly and perform the processes needed such as cutting, scoring or etching as required for each individual item. The Ripping Engine is designed to work equally well with either sheet fed or roll fed digital printing.

Bromsgrove based laser specialists TLM Laser are now able to offer this technology to customers in the UK and Ireland, under their recent partnership agreement with LasX Industries (www.lasx.com), a technology and industry leader in high performance production class laser converting systems and services. Flexibility has become an increasingly important element in many different processes as manufacturers endeavour to meet the demands placed upon them by multiple product variants and smaller batch runs. The development of the LasX Ripping Engine allows near instantaneous changeover between products or work orders, delivering the highest levels of flexibility and reducing waste by combining smaller jobs, thus optimising the use of stock material.

The Ripping Engine interfaces with third party print management software and the laser system to prepare the information needed by the laser to fulfil the processing tasks. The files used by the Ripping Engine will originate from graphics design departments, who will typically use Adobe Illustrator, Corel or other graphics design packages for artwork

preparation. These PDF files use multiple layers to hold the specific information for material registration and job details, print design, cutting, scoring and etching etc. The Ripping Engine converts these files and sends print instructions to the printer software interface and processing instructions to the laser(s) for cutting, scoring or etching. Part of the data sent to the printer includes a 2D matrix code and alignment fiducials on either side of the web.

Individual laser jobs and parameters are stored within and triggered by the 2D matrix that has been printed along the leading edge of the web or sheet.

A camera positioned downstream from the printer and upstream from the laser, reads this code and in a fraction of a second sends the information it contains to the laser to allow specific programmes or jobs to be loaded and initiated.

The alignment fiducials provide reference points that allow the laser to compensate for any offsets in the x and y directions and any rotational skew.

The fact that the laser processing information is taken directly form the design file, eliminates the potential for errors that could result from human intervention, and the closed loop nature of the system ensures that the correct programme and parameters are selected and verified for each product prior to processing.

With the printing and laser processing fully integrated, users of this technology benefit from tangible cost savings and significantly reduced lead-times between design and shipment, when compared to more traditional print methods that require films, plates, die cutters and several different set up stages to produce the finished item.

Lifting & Positioning CAD Portal Moves to a New Level The CAD Portal on Power Jacks website is already providing an invaluable resource for lifting and positioning applications with its fast and easy access to configurable 3D models for download in native CAD formats.

N

ow the CAD Portal has undergone a significant upgrade with the introduction of more products lines and more configurable options for each product.

Power Jacks CAD portal was originally launched just over 1 year ago giving users all over the world interactive access to configurable CAD models for screw jacks, gearboxes and actuators from the device of their choice whether mobile phone, tablet or desktop computer. Since then the accessibility and downloads of the 3D models worldwide reflects the company’s customer base, which sees them export to over 80 countries.

“Having CAD available on a website is a necessity today, however having the right products that are configurable, easy to access, fast and accessible on any device is the expectation of our customers.” says Marketing Director Bruce Hamper.

“Originally we launched the system with our core products with key configurable options. Now we have expanded the products available and nearly tripled the number of configurable options so users can build highly configured models of our versatile and modular products”.

“The electric motors and rotary cam limit switches have been added to help with system building. A section which will be extended further in the future so it is even easier for users to access all the required CAD to build a jacking system from the Portal,” says Bruce.

The Portal is not the only place to interact with Power Jacks CAD models. Their website allows users without registering or logging in to use Interactive 3D Previews of models on the product pages. This is to help people unfamiliar with the products quickly learn about the product form and main variants.

For those who don’t have a CAD system the Portal still has something to offer in the form of configured product information. This is primarily through the availability of fully configured PDF data sheets, which include configured and interactive 3D views within the PDF, a fully dimensioned 2D drawing of the configured model and a summary of the options selected for the model.

“The wealth of information the portal provides is extensive and provides a valuable companion and engineering tool to the standard product catalogues,” adds Bruce.

y keeping the sensors out of the measured fluid have seemingly obvious advantages over immersed sensors such as float or capacitive devices, particularly if the liquid has suspended solids or other matter that would clog up or accumulate on the sensor making the outputs from them unreliable or inaccurate.

However, with the introduction of an innovative new conductive level sensor from Gill Sensors, it is not such a clear-cut decision as it once was. Here we take a look at some of the issues faced when using the most popular technology – ultrasonics – which Gill’s new sensor helps to overcome.

For outdoor installations in particular, changes in temperature can affect ultrasonic sensors. Temperature fluctuations alter the speed of sound waves, changing the ultrasonic signal time of flight, leaving the sensor inaccurate. Some ultrasonic sensor do have temperature compensation, but if the temperature measurement is in the sensor itself, this may be higher than the ambient temperature, particularly in direct sun. The Gill sensor remains stable across its operating temperature range of -40° to +85°C.

An ultrasonic sensor must be mounted where it will not become coated by material or condensation.

Coatings dissipate the signal, sometimes to the extent that there is no longer enough power to get the signal through the coating and back again. Regular cleaning may be one way to overcome this. The Gill 7014 conductive level sensor has a smooth, non-stick FEP coating without any holes or cavities in it. This means that whatever is mixed with the water it will not clog up or become coated with solids, giving reliable ‘fit-and-forget’ measurement performance, whatever it is immersed in.

If it’s a liquid, Gill can measure it.

If your process involves the manufacture or processing of liquids and you need to know the level of that liquid through your plant, then chances are you will start your considerations of the most suitable level sensor by looking at non-contact sensors.

Foam is the natural enemy of ultrasonic signals. Although ultrasonic sensors have come a long way in measuring foam in recent years, because it absorbs the signals from the sensor it can still degrade or absorb the signal completely making the sensor inoperable.

The Gill sensor will penetrate any foam depth or density allowing it to measure the fluid level accurately underneath.

To maintain a high quality return signal, ultrasonic sensors like a smooth and reflective surface to bounce off. In many process applications the liquid level surface can be turbulent, particularly if the liquid tank has agitators in it. This disrupted surface will scatter the sound pulse affecting the measurement performance of the sensor.

Due to its unique, engineered design, the immersed probe of the Gill sensor can withstand the lateral loads imposed upon it by fluid flows while still providing a reliable, accurate output.

What’s New in Electronics Live - The UK Electronics Event The What’s New in Electronics team have announced some significant changes to the UK’s only dedicated electronics event, WNIE Live, establishing it as the essential show for the industry during 2018.

DMT hits landmark production of ¼ billion cubic metres of green gas

Global biogas upgrading equipment specialist DMT Environmental Technology will reveal at UK AD and World Biogas Expo 2018 how its membrane technology has produced a quarter of a billion cubic metres of biomethane, which is enough green gas to heat 227,000 homes and power thousands of vehicles worldwide.

Furthermore, the firm will announce the introduction of its first UK-based sales and service team.

The new team will roll-out DMT’s highly successful collaborative based project service to UK customers and help new developers easily access DMT’s superior yieldgenerating upgrading technology.

Visitors to stand D601 will learn how 30 international plant operators, including the UK’s first commercial biomethane to grid facility which opened in 2012 at Poundbury, have benefited from DMT’s Carborex® MS membrane technology: housed in a compact, modular, containerised unit, it boasts an uptime of 98 per cent and upgrades biogas to a methane concentration of 99 per cent, resulting in a higher yield.

Heading up the new team, UK Business Director Stephen McCulloch proudly adds: “Converting organic matter into renewable gas also brings considerable carbon savings ¬– focusing on efficiency and effectiveness, DMT’s worldwide projects have achieved savings in excess of 642,382 tonnes CO2 equivalent, equal to 0.14 per cent of the UK’s

total greenhouse gas emissions. This is the same as taking 20 per cent of all buses in the UK off the road, or all fishing vessels in the UK off the seas and oceans.”

Commenting on the commitment DMT is showing to the UK AD industry, Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive of ADBA and one of the organisers of UK AD and World Biogas Expo 2018, said: “The new Renewable Heat Incentive tariffs are set to kickstart the second wave of biomethane plants in the UK. Having grown from 0 to 90 plants in the last five years, we expect this figure to grow further over the next few years, and it’s great to see DMT placing themselves at the heart of the UK’s biomethane sector.”

Stephen outlines his plans for the UK team: “As well as expanding the UK market, we will be increasing the scope of our supply, including offering finance options. In addition, we have fine-tuned our offering and are issuing a five-year membrane guarantee on our Carborex® MS upgrading technology. With this improved strategy we look forward to helping to take the already thriving UK biomethane sector to the next level – and to producing our next quarter of a billion cubic metres of green gas.”

XYZ starts and ends MACH on a high In the two months prior to the MACH exhibition [February and March] XYZ Machine Tools recorded its two best-ever months for machine orders. This may have indicated that customers were pre-empting MACH and getting their orders in early, but this wasn’t the case with the exhibition delivering exceptional sales and enquiries.

Reduce digestate volumes with HRS A

t UK AD & World Biogas Expo 2018 stand D603, HRS Heat Exchangers will showcase its novel Digestate Concentration System (DCS), which increases the dry solid content of digestate three-or four-fold, typically to between 1020 per cent.

By reducing the liquid fraction and therefore the overall volume of digestate produced, the DCS minimises the economic and logistical challenges associated with digestate storage, transportation and application. Up to 60 per cent less storage capacity is needed and fewer tanker loads are required, helping to curb an AD plant’s transportation costs and carbon footprint. And with an average 1.5 MW AD plant generating 40,000 tonnes of liquid digestate each year, that can mean significant carbon and financial savings.

By reusing heat from existing sources, such as the CHP engine, the DCS is virtually energy self-sufficient. Water removed by the process is recovered and can be mixed with AD feedstock at the front-end of the plant, increasing the efficiency of the digester. The DCS also overcomes odour issues and increases the nutrient content of digestate via acid-dosing with sulphuric acid – while the volume of digestate is reduced, the nutrient content actually increases.

The HRS DCS is a plug-and-play, fully automated system which is completely flexible and can be tailored to meet the requirements of individual AD plants.

The technology is installed at a number of facilities worldwide and is helping operators to reduce their storage, transport and application costs, as well as their water usage, while using spare heat which would otherwise be wasted.

NSF Accredited Flowmeters for Use with Food Products

Measuring Flow of Low Viscosity Fluids

Based on a radial flow technique, Titan Enterprises turbine flowmeter range provides the ideal way for accurately measuring the flow of low viscosity liquids.

Classic turbine flowmeters use propeller type turbines in a closed circular conduit. The turbine is mounted on low friction bearings and its rotation is detected through the chamber wall by one of a variety of detector types. These flowmeters have good linearity in larger diameters but as the pipe bore reduces the efficiency of the flowmeter also reduces.

where the flow of fluid is directed at the turbine that is mounted on robust low friction sapphire bearings. The geometry of the turbine and the fluid chamber ensures that the rotational speed of the rotor is proportional to the flow rate through the device.

The use of this radial arrangement advantageously allows more energy to be imparted into the turbine so the bearing drag is far less important. Furthermore, because more energy is available the bearings themselves can be a lot stronger so increasing the life of the flowmeter. At higher flow rates – the Titan turbine flowmeter design allows some of the fluid to bypass the turbine chamber, which then behaves as a “shunt” to the metered fluid, as a result accuracy is still maintained and the output remains linear.

Keeping cool under fire It was the end of a typical day for Paul Roberts, security officer at a large building in Cambridgeshire, where he is part of the team from TC Security Services who provide manned guarding services.

T

he building is a new complex that is nearing completion and will become home to the 3-4,000 staff who are currently located in a number of buildings.

Paul was waiting to handover to the officer who was coming on duty at 6pm. They were running a little late so Paul had agreed to stay on until they arrived.

While he was waiting, one of the team working on the construction came rushing to the reception desk to alert Paul that there was a fire in the building. The fire department were called to attend.

Paul’s quick thinking led to him contacting the officer who was coming on duty, asking them to block off the building to prevent anyone entering it.

Paul and a construction worker worked together to clear the building floor by floor pointing the 30 or so people on site at that time to safety.

The CEO of TC Facilities Management, Tony Reed recently visited Paul to express his thanks on behalf of TC Security Services for his sterling efforts.

Rachel Donnelly, client contact at the site said, “A huge thank you for the way you handled the situation at site last month. Human-centred Automation

C

orporate Risk Associates (CRA) is one of Europe’s largest integrated Human Factors, Safety, Risk and Reliability consultancies. CRA provides services to safety-critical industries including: Nuclear, Process Power, Rail, Business Risk and Defence.

In the nuclear sector, CRA’s human factors specialists have observed a growing niche for human and machine interface development. This is due to the update of nuclear control systems bringing increased use of software control. Thus, CRA is currently investigating methods for determining the appropriate level of interaction between operators and automation for monitoring and controlling process control tasks.

Three drivers for the rapid increase in automated systems are to: make tasks easier, more convenient or safer.

Whilst these are laudable aims, many automated systems are developed with insufficient consideration of human requirements. Hence there is a tendency for the development of many automated systems to be seen as a purely engineering process, judged mainly against financial criteria with little or no consideration of the

real human requirements. So, it is perhaps not surprising that numerous instances have been reported where automated systems have failed to meet users’ expectations and resulted in severe consequences.

These deficiencies can be avoided by taking a human-centred approach to the development of automation.

This should start by undertaking a comprehensive task analysis of the human activities that are being automated, and understanding how humans will need to interact with the new system. This will provide vital insights into the human requirements to enable development and design of a system that operates effectively in a wide range of situations.

A major human factors concern for automated systems is situational awareness. This centres on the user’s overall understanding of the operation of the systems that are being monitored or controlled by the automation. It is preferable to design the automation system to enable users to be aware of important state data, whilst avoiding information overload. Another important consideration is operator workload level. Whilst automated processing

can certainly help to reduce the risks of human errors due to high workload, if the automated support lowers workload too far, this can greatly reduce vigilance. For this reason, the methods being developed for determining interaction levels between humans and automation are also assessing how the level of interaction can be changed as overall workload is increased.

It is important to enable users to diagnose automation failures, particularly when data may appear sound but is actually unreliable.

Undertaking a human reliability assessment of the proposed system helps determine the potential for these situations to occur. By identifying potential error modes in this manner, the interfaces can be designed in ways that support operators in establishing any such failures.

SSI Schaefer Equips Toolstation’s Milestone 300th Branch with Integrated Storage System Toolstation, the multi-award-winning supplier to the trade, has reached a milestone with the opening of its 300th branch. SSI Schaefer is proud to have played its part in Toolstation’s success by designing and installing the storage system, which holds the trade supplier’s entire branch stock, including out of gauge and longlength items.

The system is based upon SSI Schaefer’s robust, high quality Regal shelving range, which is highly versatile, modular and easily adapted to accommodate Toolstation’s large and variable product range.

After agreeing the final layout for the store, Toolstation placed their order with SSI Schaefer on 22nd January with the complete delivery being made in just over a week. Thanks to rapid assembly between 1st and 5th February, the first stock was on the shelves in the Eastleigh branch on 6th February, ahead of the store opening for trading, six days later on 12th.

James Skilling, SSI Schaefer’s National Account Manager, said: “Having already supplied Toolstation

with storage solutions for 295 of its branches across the UK, we are delighted to have again provided the storage system for this landmark site.”

The official opening took place on Friday 23rd February, the ceremony conducted by Councillor Maureen Sollitt, Mayor of Eastleigh, accompanied by James Mackenzie, Managing Director of Toolstation, and the company’s Retail Director, Simon Robinson.

James Mackenzie, who joined Toolstation as Managing Director in July of last year, said that reaching the 300th branch milestone was great news for the business and a platform for further growth, commenting: “This landmark figure represents the start of a new phase in our growth, with an accelerated branch opening plan and an expanded range developed in response to customer demand, as well as lots of other initiatives in the pipeline. We want to ensure that we continue to deliver the highest standard of customer experience and stock availability, whilst maintaining everyday low prices.”

IS THIS THE END OF UNPLANNED DOWNTIME? Let’s talk about downtime. It can halt production, require expensive repairs or replacements, and has huge cost implications for manufacturers. But what if you could know, in advance, when repairs or maintenance are needed? And what if your schedule reflected this increased level of foresight? These kinds of capabilities may be closer than you think.

T

here are many ways in which FANUC products are recognised within industry. You might know us best by our distinctive yellow robots. Or perhaps as the market-leader for CNC. What you may not know, however, are the extensive capabilities we have to turn a FANUC robot or CNC-controlled machine into a fully-functioning, fully-automated, smart manufacturing cell.

While some may find the subject daunting or confusing, Industry 4.0 was nonetheless the hot-topic of 2017, and 2018 looks set to be the same. The truth is, we’ve been doing it for years. In fact, the smart condition monitoring capability we launched at last year’s EMO was just one of many developments FANUC has had in machine-tomachine communication over the past few years.

For those who missed it, the technology launched last year is known as “Zero Downtime” (ZDT), an automated software for monitoring robots and identifying potential faults.

As manufacturers, we can all agree that unplanned downtime is a financial and logistical nightmare; yet, it’s one of the few certainties that we have. The solution lies in making sure that any potential losses are planned, and mitigated, ahead of time.

That’s exactly what ZDT does. As a smart diagnostic tool, it connects to a FANUC robot and conducts a mix of maintenance scheduling and process health monitoring. It can also generate a digital twin, which helps the software to compare how the robot should work, to how it is actually

functioning. If there are discrepancies, these are noted using a simple traffic-light system to communicate the severity of the problem.

Don’t worry: smart diagnostics aren’t as sensitive as your kitchen smoke alarm, and they won’t flash red at every minor discrepancy. Instead, they’re designed to track changes and observe patterns in machine behaviour within defined parameters or tolerance levels. It’s then up to you to decide the best course of action to prevent machine failure.

Do technologies such as these signal the end of unplanned downtime? Unfortunately not. As you’ll well know, downtime is influenced by more than machine faults. Technology is evolving all the time, however, and we are seeing some exciting developments within artificial intelligence and diagnostics.

Predictive maintenance is one of the easier wins for companies looking to invest in smart manufacturing, and it’s a great way to enhance an automated production line for true lights-out, unmanned manufacturing.

HBM Provides Terex® MPS with a Flexible Solution When Terex Pegson® MPS needed a reliable and flexible system to measure stress on its LJ5139 stone crushing machine, it turned to HBM – a market leader in the field of test and measurement – to provide a comprehensive and effective solution.

Following a thorough study of the issues faced by Terex Pegson® MPS, HBM specified its rugged DAQ, SomatXR series, which is particularly suitable for use in harsh environments. To compliment this package, HBM also suggested the Somat MX1615B-R module and related accessories, which included RF-9 strain gauge rosettes.

Given the demanding environment, it was important that Terex Pegson® MPS specified the correct equipment.

Mobile Data Acquisition Specialist. The powerful SomatXR data acquisition system is specifically developed for use in harsh environments. The modules provide a wide temperature range and are protected from humidity, dust, shock and vibration.

The data acquisition system provides a web interface for simple operation without any software installation.

This allows for convenient channel parameterisation, monitoring of measurement jobs and visualisation of measured data far away from the measuring point. This was a particularly significant feature for Terex® MPS, given the nature of the measurement task.

Another factor which was taken into consideration when specifying the Somat XR series was the operating conditions.

For instance, when operating under such extreme conditions, it’s often hard to anticipate all of the problems that may occur, such as losing measurement data due to unforeseen events, such as a power failure.

The SomatXR system enables data to be continuously recorded.

This means that should a failure interrupt a test, recorded data up until that point will be saved.

This was a particularly relevant feature in terms of the long term tests, typically performed by Terex® MPS. HBM data acquisition systems are suitable for a wide range of mobile testing applications. Despite the immense load requirements and extreme environmental conditions, HBM was able to provide Terex® MPS with a reliable and flexible solution.

In addition to specifying and supplying Terex® MPS with a system to meet its needs, HBM also provided engineers with valuable training and continued support, where needed.

PROTECT PSC1: The PROTECT PSC1 safety controller by Schmersal is compact, has a modular structure and can be used flexibly. The PSC1 makes it possible to project tailormade safety-related solutions, whether for individual machines or highly complex installations. Furthermore, the PSC1 can make a contribution towards the realisation of Industry 4.0 concepts.

The PROTECT PSC1 consists of freely programmable compact PLCs with IO extension modules for signal processing of mechanical and electronic safety switchgear. The compact controllers can be equipped with a universal communication interface.

This enables the selection and implementation of different fieldbus protocols easily using software. The PSC1 therefore only requires one hardware element to create a connection to most common forms of fieldbus systems – which is a significant advantage, particularly considering aspects of cost.

High Temperature Thermal Imaging Through Glass FLIR Systems introduces the FLIR A6262sc – a high performance SWIR camera with very special ablilities. Using a proprietary VisGaAs detector, that provides extended spectral coverage down into the visible range, enables the FLIR A6262sc to uniquely make measurements through glass.

The FLIR A6262sc camera sets the standard for high temperature thermal measurement in through glass oven, furnace, and environmental chamber applications by combining high-speed performance, unique spectral coverage and a suite of fully customizable features. The newly-designed high resolution detector offers improved sensitivity and linearity across the full dynamic range, making it ideal for radiometry and temperature calibrated applications.

The FLIR A6262sc is a fully equipped thermal imaging camera. It is particularly flexible and versatile since users can fully configure camera settings such

as frame rate, integration time and window size according to their wishes and requirements.

The A6262sc is equipped with an indium gallium arsenide detector optimized to the 0.6 1.7 µm waveband, which produces crisp, 640 x 512 pixel thermal images. The sensor includes three user selectable gain states offering a 75x gain factor, making it an exceptionally flexible tool for imaging bright objects (laser beam profiling), low light scenes (nightglow imaging) and verification of silicon wafers. Its sensor offers a 75x gain factor.

The A6262sc offers full customization of all settings, including integration time and frame rate, so you can tailor the controls to each unique application.

Synchronize and trigger the camera with external events and devices, for maximum flexibility. The A6262sc also provides a built-in flat field shutter that

can be either manually or automatically controlled for spatially-uniform image quality.

The FLIR A6262sc cameras work seamlessly with FLIR ResearchIR Max software, enabling intuitive viewing, recording, and advanced processing of thermal data. They are fully compliant with GigE Vision® and GeniCam, making them plug and play with other software programs, such as MathWorks® MATLAB. Optical Gas Imaging Camera Guidebook FLIR Systems has published a new guidebook that provides informative tips to enable engineers and scientists to get the most out of their Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) camera.

OGI cameras use spectral wavelength filtering and Stirling cooler cold-filtering technology to visualize the infrared absorption of gases such as methane, sulfur hexafluoride, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and Freon refrigerants. FLIR Systems produces a range of optimized OGI cameras, each with a filter that matches the spectral absorption of the gas it is designed to visualize.

Through OGI technology, the industries including petrochemicals, chemicals and power generation can

incorporate a safer, more efficient ‘Smart LDAR’ (Leak Detection and Repair) program. Inspectors can detect fugitive emissions and leaks faster and pinpoint the source immediately, leading to prompt repairs, reduced industrial emissions, and greater conformity to regulations. Specialists in small Diameter Dowel Pins

Technifast has increased its machining capabilities with the commissioning of additional Citizen CNC machinery to keep pace with increasing demand for their small diameter dowel pin services.

The new addition to Technifast’s established manufacturing division will give the Corbybased firm increased capacity to produce very small diameter dowels, from 1mm – 5mm diameter, which will bring reductions in leadtime, but retain the high-precision accuracy that Technifast customers demand.

“Our increased machining capabilities allow us to provide a rapid response to the many enquiries and orders we receive for the production of small diameter dowel pins,” said Technifast’s Managing Director, Louis Speed.

“We have seen this area of our business evolve over recent times and the acquisition of our new machinery is an example of how Technifast continually strives to deliver a greater field of dowel pin options. There is no ‘fit-all’ solution for fasteners, so it is important we are able to offer our customers a product tailored to their unique requirements.”

As a specialist in the production of precision components in stainless steel materials, the small diameter dowels can be manufactured in stainless steel grades 303 and 304, plus marine grade stainless steel 316. Technifast also has the capabilities to produce dowels to larger diameters, with 32mm being the maximum size.

Casella’s dBadge2™ personal noise dosimeter is small and unobtrusive, and can record the actual audio a worker has been exposed to, to be played back to determine exposure sources.
