Select the Right Low Field Shielding Alloy Material Throughout the decades and increasingly today, design and electrical engineers, OEMs, metal suppliers and fabricators worldwide refer to mumetal as the industry standard. Professionals may use the mumetal name as a generic term but not realize that it is in fact a registered trade name. MuMETAL®, a high nickel content alloy specified for low-frequency shielding applications, is used to resolve electro-magnetic interference (EMI) problems. “Engineers understand that proper material selection is crucial and care must be taken to ensure consistency, quality, and shielding efficiency of the materials used for custom shields and production parts as other companies may misrepresent this brand.”, stated Mr. Mark D. The mumetal formulation and exacting spec provides maximum magnetic permeability or the highest degree of shielding for use in most electrical and electronic applications implemented today by OEMs, government and national labs, R & D and private laboratories, as well as scientific and medical universities. Across a wide array of industries and markets such as automation, robotics, aerospace, aviation, automotive, communications, hand-held devices, IoT technology, medical, scientific, R & D, and OEMs, design and electrical engineers face challenges of increased complexity when creating new product design drawings for all types of electronic device and component layouts. Designers often encounter problems with densely packed electronic assemblies that have internal components interfering with each other. When the electromagnetic interference (EMI) includes low frequency fields (30 to 300 Hz), magnetic shielding is essential to assure proper operation of the electronic equipment without failure. Engineers must also design and manufacture products, equipment, machinery, devices, parts, and instrumentation to meet applicable regulations or standards. Because MuMETAL is an industry reference material with different characteristics than proprietary alloys, when the specification or the application calls for a magnetically soft or high permeability material, mumetal can frequently be successfully applied. One of the most important design questions is whether the source field is internal or external, and which field is most economical and practical to shield. Internal interference is created by designed-in components located within a circuit, system, enclosure, piece of equipment or room. External interference or the H-field source is created by unwanted nearby fields radiating from power lines, circuits, electrical enclosures, transformers, electro-magnetic machinery and the earth’s magnetism. Secondly, should the source of interference or the sensitive device be shielded? The answer to this question depends on several factors. Shielding the source may involve stronger fields, and therefore thicker materials. All interference sources must be shielded, or the sensitive device will still be affected. The usual approach is to shield the sensitive device. This prevents interference from both present and future sources. A hands-on approach to solving a shielding problem can be accomplished with the use of a lab kit, testing, and prototyping.

Mr. Wickler also spoke about the importance of continued lab testing, “Over several decades, we have performed hundreds of laboratory tests and calculated thousands of shielding equations—all in an effort to continually validate the theoretical application of magnetic interference control in both AC and DC applications, and to aid engineers in shield design. A documented and effective reference tool, the B-H curve chart depicts the material capabilities to attenuate and absorb a wide range of magnetic fields.” Shielding efficiency is a result of material composition, specific gravity, thickness, grain structure within the alloy, and hardness. Material selection will depend on the strength of the unwanted field (Ho) and the amount of field attenuation required. MuMETAL is the preferred solution because of its reliable performance for reducing low-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI). Available as stress annealed (partially annealed for ease of machinability) sheet stock, it is used for fabricated shields such as enclosures, cylinders, cans, channels or 3-D boxes. Complex cylindrical shaped shields are the most efficient for redirecting and reducing magnetic fields. Typically, hydrogen atmospherically controlled perfection annealing or final annealing is required after stamping, machining, bending, rolling, severe forming or welding, and is crucial in relieving material stress and developing the alloy’s maximum shielding performance. The perfection annealed fabricated shields and parts are then tested at our in-house quality control lab to certify that the demanding specifications are met. New High Precision pressure regulator High Flow Electronic Valves The SV102 is a manual regulator that provides great accuracy and repeatability in a compact, durable package. CFD Meshing Made Simple Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations have gained popularity due to a large increase in computer power and development of feasible numerical methods. Automatic Print Inspection using 4Sight Technology AutoCoding Systems will be demonstrating their latest innovation in vision at the forthcoming UKIVA Machine Vision Conference. The 4Sight solution, powered by SICK AppSpace, is a true industry breakthrough in automatic print inspection. “No Read” - some characters are legible but below the threshold for a “Good Read”

The global partnership between AutoCoding Systems and SICK has resulted in the development of a new innovative solution for checking the presence, accuracy and legibility of printed codes. Incorrect, illegible or missing codes on consumer products can cause serious, and expensive, problems for manufacturers, but typically reading and inspecting of printed codes, particularly on high speed lines, has always been challenging due to the many application specific variables.

The 4Sight application communicates directly with any brand of printer, with no requirement to “teach” the camera what to look for. Unlike more orthodox vision inspection techniques, no fixturing, such as an edge or logo, is needed; the software can automatically cope with variations in artwork, background and text location. All processing is undertaken onboard the SICK camera where the 4Sight software resides meaning no line-side PC is needed. There is a simple set-up process for camera position, set-up, focus, illumination and exposure time, with no requirement for operators to configure features or regions of interest. The software automatically adjusts to accommodate real-time message changes, such as date code and clock time. In addition, there are a number of configurable features to allow the solution to be easily optimised for fast processing time, making it an ideal print inspection solution for high speed applications. The application offers full flexibility allowing users to determine acceptable print quality tolerances and define what is considered a good

read, bad read or no read on a per product basis. As well as operating seamlessly with AutoCoding, the 4Sight software can be used as standalone solution or connected to any code deployment system and also offers full integration to various types of label editing software. Managing Director, Mike Hughes, will be delivering a presentation to delegates at the upcoming June Machine Vision Conference where he’ll consider some of the challenges of using vision technology to automatically inspect printed information. High performance DC/DC converters with 1.5 million hours MTBF The range of DC/DC converters from PowerGood is available from Ideal Power. The new ESBN, ESCN and ESAN series power supplies are highly reliable, with a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of 1.5 million hours. The high reliability and performance of the converters makes them well-suited to robotics and other instrumentation applications, as well as transportation and railway applications. The converters are supplied completely encased to protect against harsh environments, and meet the EN61000 safety standard. To improve reliability, the converters have fewer components, with no life constraining capacitors. The products are available with embedded heat sink as an option which allows them to work under extended operating temperature range of -40ºC to 115ºC (for the ESBN series) or -45ºC to 115ºC (for the ESCN series).

Help segregate and recycle your waste! Are you complying with the new waste regulations that actually came into force back in January 2015? Why choose Instrument Hire? Today, firms operating in the built environment sector face many challenges, managing equipment resource costs has always been vital for success but in times of economic and political uncertainty, the rental of expensive pieces of equipment can be the most cost-effective solution to acquiring specialist test instrumentation without the need to outlay large capital sums. More and more companies are now using the hiring of equipment as the preferred solution to their needs, as it frees up capital to focus on its core activities without compromising its businesses growth.

Hire of instrumentation ensures that no money is tied up when equipment is not being used, and the hidden costs to ownership such as maintenance are also not incurred. Currently it is impossible for any UK business to ignore the ‘B’ word, and with uncertainty over exactly what the fallout from Brexit may look like, many firms are wisely being prudent with regards to capital expenses especially in the short term. For example, if you are to embark on a thermal imaging survey a good quality camera can be purchased for this task costing in the order of £7000, and if a wideangle or telephoto lens is needed the equipment cost for these can mount up further. proposition to buying for many c o m p a n i e s especially when finances are tight. On balance, hiring has never looked better”. When selecting a supplier for rental, careful consideration must be given to the level of service needed. For example, does the rental company operate a quality accredited calibration system for the items it offers for hire? A simple question to ask but one that is often overlooked. Correct calibration is of paramount importance especially in regulated and safety critical environments, a lack of recognised accredited calibration could be why the rental cost are low. New DC Platform: Interroll presents an innovative drive solution Sant’Antonino, Switzerland, February 19, 2019. Interroll is setting new standards in modern material flow technology. The new RollerDrive EC5000 also offers more flexibility in terms of its mechanical output power. The new motor rollers are available in 20 W, 35 W and 50 W versions that can take on any transport tasks for light or heavy goods. To support the implementation of conveyor solutions for heavy goods, Interroll offers the 50 W power option as well as a RollerDrive version with tubes measuring 60 mm in diameter instead of 50 mm. What’s more, the well-known IP66 and Deep Freeze design options are available; these enable RollerDrive solutions to be implemented even in areas that are cleaned using powerful water jets or that reach temperatures as low as -30° C. This means that modern conveying systems can offer data transparency for the first time. In combination with an Interroll control system with multi-protocol capability (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and EtherCat), this means that users can consistently visualize a range of information and functions on the screen using the PLC or a web interface. One example is the display of general information about the current operating state and the operating load of the individual drives over time. In parallel, the control systems enable a range of detailed information such as precise error statuses, torque or temperature, for instance, to be read out for each individual drive. At the same time, the new RollerDrive’s bus interface enables users to carry out completely new control functions that are required in an automated environment. As a result, users can control the acceleration, speed and deceleration of the conveyed goods in the system more precisely. Adelphi Chairman Stephen Holroyd

celebrates 50-year anniversary In the spring of 1969, a lot happened in the UK. The first test-flight of Concorde took place, the first ever B&Q opened, John Lennon and Yoko Ono got married, and Lulu came joint first in the Eurovision Song Contest. Also, Stephen Holroyd joined Adelphi.

Adelphi supply process and packaging machinery to many industries, including pharmaceutical & laboratory, food & beverage, cosmetics & personal care, and more. Stephen has steered the Adelphi Group through phenomenal change and growth during his time at the helm. This has included the formation of Adelphi Tubes in 1970, the purchase of Fluid Equipment Company in 1973, the move to Haywards Heath in 1984, the acquisition of Coldstream Engineering in 1994 and the purchase of Masterfil in 2007, to name just a few. On Friday 12th April, Adelphi celebrated Stephen’s extraordinary tenure at their Sussex site, with a cake, some champagne, and an extremely personal gift: a working scale replica of their popular Response Benchtop Filler! In front of Stephen’s family, including his daughter and grandchildren, Sales Directors Dean Willis and Gavin Crauford-Taylor paid tribute to Stephen in moving speeches: “Stephen really does have a vast array of industry achievements, and everyone at Adelphi was proud to see these recognised when Stephen deservedly won the PPMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. Credit also needs to be given to his wonderful wife Angela, who has been behind Stephen and behind Adelphi on the whole journey.

As well as Stephen’s working achievements, to really do him justice, we have to appreciate the extraordinary personal impact he has had in these 50 years, both for Adelphi’s staff and for the local community. 50 years in one industry and at one company is an extraordinary achievement for anyone, but even more extraordinary is the inexhaustible energy and enthusiasm which Stephen continues to bring. He still genuinely loves it, and even though he is no longer directly involved with seeing customers, he still retains his salesman’s love of new statistics, new orders and new business opportunities. His incredible vision, momentum and drive keeps pushing Adelphi, and all of our staff, to achieve more. Stephen also likes to employ local people, and to give back to the local community, sponsoring many local events such as the Cuckfield Book Festival. Pleated Depth Filter Enhances Enzyme Production Amazon Filters reports on how a leading Animal Healthcare company has made significant time and cost savings through implementation of a SupaPore 16FPW microfiltration system for bioburden control on its 100m3 batch production of an enzyme added to chicken feed. The customer was originally using a 10inch pre-filter and final filter combination for bioburden control from a different supplier. Using this set-up not only were bioburden levels of filtered product variable but they also typically had to use 1 filter for every 100 litres of product meaning huge replacement filter costs, long batch filtering time and lots of downtime for filter changes. Amazon Filters offered and trialled its SupaPore 16FPW filter as a replacement solution. Widely proven in bioburden control installations, the SupaPore 16FPW being a pleated depth filter offered greater filter life and better throughputs than the existing system. Using a 10-inch version of the SupaPore 16FPW in its trials the customer was able to reduce filter changes to just 3-4 filters per batch. On Amazon Filters recommendation the customer has implemented a multi round filtration housing enabling them to run a whole batch through in a single pass. Not only has this

produced a consistent sterile grade enzyme product but it has also reduced downtime, filter usage and processing time enabling the customer to make significant time and cost savings.

Amazon Filters Expands Digital Inks Filtration Portfolio Amazon Filters reports on significant uptake by digital ink manufacturers of its advanced SupaPleat Plus ink filter range to solve filtration issues in UV, solvent and water based pigmented inks. All inks are not created equal and neither is the filtration solution required to guarantee a defect free and highquality digital printing process. The SupaPleat Plus Ink filter was initially developed to solve a problem a global manufacturer was having with gels in a UV ink. Since then, Amazon Filters have developed and established an optimised ink filter tool box to help other manufacturers improve their processes. Often newly developed inks from R&D don’t behave as they should on production scale systems. Whereas dye-based inks are relatively easy to filter, pigmented inks often present a much more complex challenge. It is well understood that too high a flux rate can have severe consequences on the total volume throughput of an ink product but still many production processes are run at excessive rates. Running production processes at an excessive rate can also induce high differential pressure across filters which in turn can lead to the generation of gels in the ink and consequent increased rates of blockage. Capacity problems with a yellow UV ink were recently solved using an Amazon Filters all polypropylene graded density T grade SupaPleat Plus ink filter with process flow rate modified to improve throughput.

The rapid growth in water based pigmented inks for textiles has led to a growing number of manufacturers diversifying into this area from traditional inks. The Amazon W grade hybrid filter, which incorporates both polypropylene melt blown media and borosilicate microfibre, provided an effective solution for a manufacturer who had quality issues with their digital ink product being developed for textiles. Seamless communication between cooling units and associated cloud-based systems is opening up opportunities for new applications. Essential to these applications are IoT-capable devices such as the cooling units and chillers in the Rittal Blue e+ range.

uring the lifetime of an enclosure cooling unit, the costs incurred for energy, maintenance and service are usually much higher than the initial investment in the unit itself.

components, ambient conditions, or even the level of soiling on the filter mat, can also provide useful data, and practical opportunities to optimise maintenance and energy efficiency.

Optimisations carried out during maintenance can help reduce workload and thus lower costs, for example through predictive or needs-based maintenance. Needs-based maintenance, however, always requires information about the individual cooling units and the surrounding conditions. A typical example is replacing a fan before a fault occurs, which otherwise – in the worst-case scenario – could cause not just the cooling unit, but the entire system to fail. If there is historic information available to plant operators about the fan’s running time, the difference between its expected and actual speeds, and its power consumption, then it’s possible to identify a gradually developing fault or an impending failure. This means that vital components can be replaced early on, increasing the overall system’s availability.

It’s not surprising, therefore, that seamless communication of information between systems is growing in importance. In a state-of-the-art factory, where data is easily available as and when required, the sight of maintenance technicians walking from one cooling unit to another, jotting down information with a clipboard and pen, is a thing of the past.

Using Siemens MindSphere, the platform is scalable and can capture and analyse huge volumes of data – paving the way for smart-factory applications, for example, in predictive maintenance, energy data management and resource optimisation. As I indicated at the beginning, needs-based maintenance is cheaper than carrying out maintenance work at fixed intervals, and raises system availability. Our solution also calculates the shortest routes between calls for service engineers, which eliminates wasted journeys at facilities with a large number of machines. And live data on each unit means staff can bring the right spare part with them straight away! Rittal products also interoperate with the cloud-based data analytics system IBM Watson IoT. Watson’s architecture is designed to process information rapidly, and employs machine-learning algorithms to analyse ever-growing data volumes. Data analytics applications are used to make maintenance more efficient and achieve a high standard of operational reliability. Again, customer benefits include improved machine availability and optimised maintenance costs. The solution’s new technologies also make new business models - such as smart maintenance contracts possible.

Visualised data in the cockpit With the introduction of the Blue e+ cooling unit series, Rittal has set new standards for the energy efficiency of electrical enclosures. Thanks to diagnostic software, users can go a step further, and save more energy through the optimum operation of their cooling units. Comprehensive information is essential of course, and all the relevant data is provided by the new data cockpit in RiDiag III. All the information collected from the cooling unit’s numerous sensors is clearly displayed and evaluated, including temperatures, the input voltages and currents at the compressor. The EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) display is particularly useful, allowing users to track how energy efficient the cooling unit is under specific environmental conditions and with specific settings. By analysing the data, users can optimise parameters, achieve additional efficiency improvements and hence lower costs. What we’ve wanted to show in this article is how how the IoT Interface can be used, providing an insight into future Industry 4.0 applications and their potential benefits. All this stems from the seamless transmission of data from sensors inside the cooling units and chillers to the cloud.

‘Smart’ Sensor Provides Continuous Feedback & Diagnostics A smart valve sensor which provides continuous feedback and essential diagnostics to help plant operators ensure optimum process performance has recently been introduced by sensor specialist ifm electronic The MVQ smart valve sensor provides outstanding, all-round position visibility with bright multi-coloured LED indication helping plant operators to monitor the flow of media from a distance. For example, is the valve open or closed? Is the valve opening fully? Or is it blocked by deposits? Is it closed properly, or is the seal wearing? If used as a standard sensor the MVQ will provide 3 switched signals for the valve position. However, thanks to the integrated IO-Link interface the sensor becomes a real-time diagnostic device providing continuous realtime feedback, as opposed to a simple, less sophisticated valve position sensor. The fine resolution of just 0.1º provides operators with accurate information on the conditions inside the valve, with adjustable tolerances to allow for different types of media and the age of the valve. In addition, the MVQ can also measure the time taken for the valve to move, alerting operators to the possible need for maintenance. Any end position of the valve and the size of the sensing range can also be set. Also, a third switch point can be selected, for example for 3-way valves or for a diagnostic alarm. This flexible configuration is enabled with the smart valve sensor by the ifm application software LR Device or an inductive ‘teach button’.

Capturing the First Image is Always the Hardest Part Smart fridges, agricultural drones, or industrial robots - the working prototype and the first image present special challenges for developers embedding bare sensors into their devices. In this case, small sensor modules can both simplify and accelerate the process to a working prototype, providing the first image to smart devices in only 30 minutes. The manufacturer of a fridge must have experience in refrigeration. For smart home appliances, it is no longer that simple. A modern fridge with integrated cameras can analyze the food; update the online shopping list; or, display suitable recipes. Developers of these smart devices need basic knowledge about imaging, sensor technology and the integration of camera technology into the refrigerator. Initial integration of vision technology into smart devices often poses new challenges to development teams. They must realize a prototype; the basic functionality and the interaction of all components must work flawlessly. In the vision subsystem, a wide variety of components must be connected and verified. Electronic design, layout, and PCB production take time and resources. In particular, high-speed signaling and sensor connection require in-depth specialist experience. A lack of knowhow can prolong the timeline extensively. “We want to enable developers to qualify image sensors directly in their application, integrate them quickly and not

have to worry about the basic vision technology,” says André Brela from FRAMOS. The company’s product line of interchangeable sensor modules and adapters facilitates the development of embedded vision products. According to Brela, developers that work with vision for the first time can implement initial prototypes with standard components, without a great deal of specialist knowledge. The product manager says that “it takes less than 30 minutes from unpacking the pre-soldered sensor modules to capturing the first image”. Modular belt conveyors can support very heavy loads, even with low belt widths, because of their positive drive mechanism. In addition, the guides along the sides of the conveyor can absorb lateral forces, which allows workpieces to be moved diagonally. A further benefit is that liquids from the goods being transported can drip through the chain, making cleaning of the modular chain belt quick and easy. Countdown to return of rail industry’s leading showcase Railtex 2019, the complete showcase of railway equipment, systems and services, is now less than one month away, and professionals from around the world are preparing to come together for the highlight of this year’s industry calendar.

Fiber optic cables For industry branches based on the speed and quality of data transmission, cables have been created in which carrier is not an electrical signal. Traditional cores were replaced with fibers, and information transfer was entrusted to an optical signal. Depending on the type of fiber used, the user chooses between:

• polymer fiber (POF), the core of which is made of organic material;

• glass fiber (GOF) with a core, the material of which is often quartz glass;

• glass-polymer fiber (PCF) with a glass core and a plastic jacket. Data transfer is possible in one or two directions. Cables in which transmission is carried out in one direction, we call SIMPLEX, while those in which transmission and reception of signals is possible in both directions – DUPLEX. Depending on the number of transmitted light beams (modes), we divide the wires into single and multimode ones. Single-mode optical fibers are designed to transmit one light wave over long distances, up to 150 km. In the case of multimode optical fibers, the phenomenon of dispersion makes it impossible to send data over long distances. This type of cabling is used by consumers who require high bandwidth, e.g. in local networks at short distances. Choosing fiber optic cables, we face unclear, often complicated markings, which correct reading can be a problem for people who are not familiar with cabling. One of them is the optical fiber dimension 980/1000, meaning the core diameter (980 microns) and the diameter of the jacket (1000 microns). TME's offer includes HITRONIC® POF polymer fiber optics from Lapp, enabling data transfer in one or two directions. The first group includes wires of the SIMPLEX version, with optical fibers:

• SIMPLEX-PE – black cable with a polymer optical fiber, allowing data transfer in one direction, whose P980/1000 fiber is made of PMMA and a fluoropolymer cladding.

• SIMPLEX-PE-PUR – orange, halogenfree cable with polymer optical fiber. The cable allows data transfer in one direction. The fiber P980/1000 is made

of PMMA and a fluoropolymer cladding. The outer PUR jacket makes it resistant to oil and high temperatures.

• SIMPLEX-FD-PE-PUR – orange, halogen-free cable for guide and movable connections. The polymer fiber with P980/1000 diameter used inside allows data transfer in one direction. Cable dedicated to work in motion, thanks to the very high flexibility. The offer also includes cables in DUPLEX version, with double optic fibers:

• DUPLEX-PE – black, halogen-free polymer fiber cable, enabling data transmission and reception in both directions (DUPLEX). The P980/1000 fiber contains a PMMA core and a fluoropolymer cladding. The wire jacket is made of polyethylene (PE).

• DUPLEX-PE-PUR – orange halogenfree cable with polymer fiber, in the version enabling transmission and reception of data in both directions (DUPLEX) Polyurethane (PUR) jacket provides resistance to high temperature and oils. Two fibers with a P980/1000 diameter are coated with a polyethylene (PE) buffer.

• DUPLEX-HY-PE-PUR –

orange halogen-free cable with increased tensile strength. Polyurethane jacket provides additional resistance to temperature and oils. The use of two plastic fibers, protected with a jacket, allows signal transmission and reception in both directions.

• DUPLEX-FD-PE-PUR – orange, halogen-free cable for movable connections, enabling data transfer in two directions. Polymer fibers coated with a polyethylene (PE) buffer, additionally protect fiber optics. The outer polyurethane jacket provides resistance to high temperatures and oils.

• DUPLEX-PNB-PA-PUR – green cable for PROFINET type B applications, permanently installed. Thanks to the use of two PMMA fibers with a P980/1000 diameter, it allows signal transmission and reception in both directions The external polyurethane jacket (PUR) protects the cable against oil and makes the cable resistant to high temperatures.

• DUPLEX-PNB-PA-PVC – cable for PROFINET type B applications, green color, with PVC outer jacket. Dedicated to permanent application in an industrial environment. Two optical fibers with P980/1000 diameter allow the transmission in both directions.

• DUPLEX-PNC-PA-PUR – green cable intended for PROFINET type C applications, with movable connections used in guides. The distinguishing feature of the HITRONIC® POF series is its high flexibility, while maintaining the possibility of working under heavy mechanical loads. The properties to a great extent provides polyurethane outer jacket, which additionally protects the cable against oils.

SICK Opens Up Industry 4.0 with its First IO-Link Encoder With the launch of the SICK AHS36 (singleturn) and AHM36 (multiturn) IO-Link absolute encoders, SICK has opened up wide-ranging new possibilities to integrate rotary motion sensing into the ‘smart’ sensor configurations of automated machinery. The SICK AHS36 and AHM36 36mm IOLink encoders are SICK’s first range of absolute encoders with IO-Link. Cost-Saving Machine Integration Adding IO-Link compatibility to the SICK AHS/AHM36 family of absolute encoders delivers a host of new benefits, starting with an extremely compact 36mm diameter design: With the IO-Link Master performing the higher-level Ethernet interface, the IO-Link encoder can be manufactured in a much smaller package. By eliminating the need to use a dedicated interface card on the PLC rack, solutions using the SICK AHS/AHM36 IO-Link absolute encoder can save time, cost and complexity in connection to higher-level control systems. Connecting encoders to the control system usually requires costly shielded cabling and could involve wiring many devices individually to the PLC rack. With

IO-Link, the SICK AHS/AHM36 enables standard unshielded cabling to be used between the encoders and the IO-Link master, so wiring costs can be dramatically reduced.

Programming and Diagnostics Via the IO-Link gateway, the AHS/ AHM36 IO-Link encoders offer new levels of diagnostic transparency and easy set-up with ‘plug and play’ device replacement. They still offer all the benefits of programming through the PLC, or with a PC using SICK’s engineering tool SOPAS. Now, in addition, there is an ability to store and download the encoder parameters from the IO-Link Master. As a result, device replacement is simply ‘plug and play’. The SICK AHS/AHM 36 IO-Link absolute encoders provide exceptional diagnostic information. Even on the basic models, error warnings can be provided on a range of both application-specific and encoderhealth parameters such as position, speed or temperature out of range. In the Advanced IO-Link versions, expected to be available in mid-2019, even more comprehensive provision and storage of diagnostic data such as temperature values, and operating times will be enabled. The SICK AHS/AHM36 Advanced IOLink encoders will also add a configurable output and input pin to enable a direct interface with another device, so it will be possible to process ‘Smart Tasks’ in the encoder itself. Compact and rugged, the magnetic AHS36 12-bit singleturn and AHM36 24-bit multiturn IO-Link are everything customers expect from a SICK family of rotary motion sensors with class-leading robustness, operating resilience and with a wide-range of versatile mechanical connection options. Get smart – the pumping operations enjoying a digital makeover The digital revolution is moving forwards at an impressive rate. Latest figures from EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, show that just 27% of manufacturing firms surveyed are still at the ‘conception’ phase of Industry 4.0, while 39% have now reached the ‘evolution’ stage and are optimising their business with smart technology.

Lesley Eaton, Marketing Executive for progressive cavity (PC) pump specialist SEEPEX, outlines how today’s smart pumps can help you climb the digital hierarchy… Pump and process control Pumps are becoming ‘smarter’ with increased integral sensors and connectivity, enabling local control and/or integration into higher control systems. Smart dosing pumps from SEEPEX comprise a PC pump with drive and control software, plus flow rate sensors and optional safety functions. They use real-time feedback to compare data, automatically adjusting the pump speed as process conditions change. This reduces maintenance requirements and ensures cost efficient system operation. Condition and process monitoring Pump monitoring systems from SEEPEX observe operational information such as flow rate,

temperature and pressure in real time, recording the pump’s operating conditions and efficiency. Connected services By connecting pump monitors and automation equipment, data can be transferred to cloud-based online services. This connectivity is the basis for Industry 4.0 and provides the information needed to improve equipment and process performance. SEEPEX connected services compare the data received from their pump monitors with previously defined operational specifications to determine deviations from optimum performance. Any deviation is communicated to the user to enable corrections to the process to be made.

Predictive maintenance and service digitalisation Data collected by pump monitors using bluetooth, wifi or SCADA systems can be analysed against historical pump trends and specifications to identify when maintenance is needed – predictive rather than scheduled. Connected services can link this data to SEEPEX to identify which parts are needed and ensure they are available, even arranging shipment to site. On-site technicians can use service apps to provide virtual reality instructions for pump maintenance; and access to service and instruction manuals, spare parts lists, chat service lines and ordering systems can all deliver maintenance efficiency, too. For example, SEEPEX pumps have QR codes which uniquely identify the pump and generate a spare parts list and O&M manual if needed.

Handheld EMF Monitor Improves Worker Safety Protecting employees from exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) has been a hot topic since EU legislation came into force in the UK in 2016. Whilst the directive, which sets minimum health and safety requirements, is often considered for workplace environments – exposure to EMFs can also affect staff working off-site.

Able to be clipped to a harness or worn on a belt or arm, the WaveMon continuously monitors a worker’s exposure to EMFs, and triggers an audible, visual and vibration alarm if preset levels are exceeded.

Engineering the future of asset maintenance – byte by byte Civil and structural engineers at Lanes Group plc are helping clients move from an old world of inadequate asset information to a new one of precision knowledge that pays dividends in cost control and programme efficiency. Andrew McQueen, Head of Lanes Group Professional Services, says: “New digital technologies for capturing, manipulating and analysing data amount to nothing less than a revolution in asset management. “Asset surveys using more traditional techniques based primarily on visual inspection, often from distance due to access costs and restrictions can often provide an incomplete data set. “This can lead to further issues being discovered during work phases, resulting in the need for difficult decisions about prioritising maintenance or budget overruns. Deployment of new digital technologies to support asset surveying is transforming the type, amount and quality of data that can be quickly captured to define structures and how they need to be maintained. The new approaches embraced by Lanes Group Professional Services are allowing clients to much more accurately and confidently assess a wide range of assets, including buildings, transport infrastructure and drainage systems.

In turn, this will lead to the development of more robust and bettercoordinated maintenance and development programmes, allowing budgets to be planned and controlled with greater assurance. Lanes Group, the UK’s largest independent drainage specialist, has expanded its offer to include professional engineering services because customers increasingly want more and better data about their assets.

“New ways of capturing digital data, though what we call pre-project scoping surveys, allow us to obtain a complete visual understanding of a structure’s condition.

In most cases, remote-access digital capture systems remove the need to gain access to the exterior of sites, so expensive scaffolding or other access systems are not needed, and safety is greatly enhanced. However, as important as the process of recording data is, the expertise and insight needed to manipulate and share it with clients, so they can quickly make informed maintenance decisions is equally essential. Andrew McQueen says: “It is important to use the correct technology in the correct circumstance to gather the data and then present it in a way that is as helpful and user-friendly as possible.

“This means our clients have a more precise understanding from the outset of the condition of their asset, even large and complex ones, and can precisely plan maintenance and refurbishment activities and budgets from the start.”

“Our approach is collaborative and customer-focussed. We’re looking at ways to use The Cloud to store and present data, so the reliance on client hardware and data storage systems is minimised.

Digital data capture systems being used by Lanes Group Professional Services include UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) with HD stills and video cameras, 360-degree imaging cameras and 3D laser scanning systems.

“The ability to interrogate data through virtual reality will soon become commonplace. Presenting data and reports in different ways best-suited for different audiences in decision-making units is also important.

Its teams are based within Lanes Group’s Rail Division, where they work with Network Rail and Transport for London to survey and help maintain rail infrastructure and associated assets.

“Our clients have multiple uses for asset data. It will be useful for engineers to plan structural maintenance and site development, with all elements recorded with digital asset tags to assess asset condition, control and value over time.

They are also working with increasing numbers of clients outside the rail industry, including utilities, construction, property development and facilities management. “Rail is one of the most complex and regulated industries in the UK,”

ENGINEERING UPDATE The UK’s manufacturing base is operating within an unusually challenging environment at present, as a result of both potential political change and the fact that some export markets are less than buoyant. Combine these issues with the fact that the UK still lags behind in the productivity stakes, when compared to other G7 nations, and it’s clear that we need to embrace the technologies that will enable UK manufacturing to be competitive on the world stage. Here in lies the dilemma: outside of the automotive sector, the UK generally performs poorly in the uptake of automation and robotics with just an average of 74 robots per 10,000 employees. This is much lower than many of our European cousins, and around a quarter of the total for Germany alone. There are undoubtedly many reasons why this is the case, however recurring themes include a lack of understanding of how automation could transform a manufacturing process, and also a fear of complexity and technical risk. In this informative article, Tim Bednall, sales & marketing manager for Wood Automation & Control’s Systems Division, highlights the depth of expertise and talent that UK manufacturers can draw upon to ease the path to automation and, in turn, greater productivity.

Despite the overall statistics, there are great examples of UK manufacturers embracing high levels of automation and making it a key element of their manufacturing processes. There are other companies that have introduced a lower level of automation, often for relatively simple pick and place, handing or assembly tasks. However, there are still a majority missing out on the potential benefits that automation can deliver. This is especially true of those who may perceive their applications to be too difficult or overly complex, as there are several, often different technologies involved in the manufacturing process. For those concerned about complexity or technical risk, the productivity and reliability of our automotive sector installations should be seen as a shining example of how large multitechnology projects can be successfully implemented. It’s not uncommon for a car manufacturing line to have several hundred robots, all of which need to operate in a complex sequence using a wide range of different technologies, and perform these tasks with high overall efficiency levels on a 24/7 basis. Outside of the automotive sector, there will be few applications that will require such high levels of mechanical automation combined with sophisticated control software and robot programming. The resources, skills and tools used to achieve

these world-class manufacturing lines are all readily available to other UK companies considering robots and automation as part of their manufacturing process. Tim Bednall commented: “It’s unfortunate that some manufacturers still shy away from automation and robotics through either a lack of understanding and / or a perception of unacceptable technical risk. There is an immense pool of automation talent that prospective users can draw upon. Using Non-Sparking tools? Here’s some sound advice from Bahco Bahco Non-Sparking (NS) tools are designed for use in potentially explosive environments, where conventional steel tools might create sparks in the presence of combustible or easily ignitable vapours, liquids and dust.

Because NS tools can’t achieve the hardness of conventional tools special care is needed when using them. Tony Hudson, an industrial and trade tools specialist at Bahco, offers the following recommendations to users of NS tools: • Avoid tools over heating; make frequent visual checks of each NS tool during use; • Don’t use both a steel tool and an NS tool at the same time; • Don’t use high copper content tools, such as AlBr and Cu-Be tools, in direct contact with acetylene; • Always take considerable care when reworking copper-beryllium (Cu-Be) tools as beryllium (Be) dust or vapour is toxic; • Cu-Be tools should be ground only when wet; • Do not inhale any dust and be sure to wear a face mask; • Make sure all NS tools are kept clean and free from ferrous or other contaminants which

may hamper the properties of a non-sparking tool; • The tool’s surface temperature must not be higher than the present gases temperature; • Ensure that no objects which could cause a spark fall or are dropped within the working environment. Reducing risk: Non-ferrous, softer materials such as brass, bronze, copper-aluminum alloys (aluminum bronze), or copper-beryllium alloys (beryllium bronze) greatly reduce the risk of producing ignitable sparks. Bahco NS tools are manufactured in aluminum-bronze (Al-Br) or copperberyllium (Cu-Be), making them both safe and suitable for use in hazardous environments. Tools used for striking applications, like slogging wrenches and hammers, are manufactured in aluminum-bronze (Al-Br), while tools that require a higher torque and precision performance, such as pliers, screwdrivers and adjustable wrenches, are manufactured in copper-beryllium (Cu-Be).

Overcoming Oscilloscope Tradeoffs at High Frequencies By Brig Asay, Director Strategic Planning, Keysight Technologies, Inc.

5G drives technology to higher frequencies and wider bandwidths. While it is exciting to think about the possibilities of mmWave and above, today’s advances stress the capabilities of current test and measurement equipment. Measurements taken above 50 GHz with instruments like spectrum analyzers come with tradeoffs, such as down converters and digital signal processing, so engineers must seek alternatives. The oscilloscope is now a very credible alternative for today’s emerging and RF instrument markets as vendors make major strides in bandwidth and signal integrity performance.

structure width, improved epitaxial design and optimized metalizations and dielectrics. The results are delay times in the order of 2ps and a frequency limit up to 600GHz, while keeping breakthrough voltage over 7V. With high output voltages and a current gain over 50, this leads to a robust IC design. The layout can adjust to any desired combination of fast speed, low noise and low current consumption. The process can create bipolar transistors, diodes, thin film resistances and thin film capacities, which are used for high quality digital, analog and mixed-signal ICs for measurement devices. The True Oscilloscope Strength: Multiple Channels As wireless carriers build their 5G infrastructure, the best way to achieve 5G speeds is to build smaller, denser cells. These require technologies such as MIMO and beamforming to seamlessly push customer data without interruptions. As its name suggests, MIMO requires more than one input and more than one output. While these will one day handle a channel density as high as 64 channels, right now, there is a four-channel need. Figure 1: Keysight's UXR oscilloscope.

Reaching Frequencies above 50 GHz with Wide Bandwidths In 2018, Keysight introduced its UXR series of oscilloscopes. With bandwidths up to 110 GHz, it was the first real-time oscilloscope with full bandwidth in the front-end design of its pre-amplifier and sampler chip. Without frequency interleaving in its frontend design, the UXR achieves significantly improved bandwidth and signal integrity.

Suddenly the real-time oscilloscope has an advantage over typical RF test measurement gear. Real-time oscilloscopes are typically found in two or four channel models, but more importantly, they offer channel to channel calibrations as standard features. In Keysight’s UXR, the channel to channel skew inside the box is below 75 fs. This measurement competes with tying multiple single instruments together using a local oscillator. Keysight’s UXR Series of oscilloscopes cover the need for high frequency coverage, wide bandwidths, and multiple channels in a single box.

Keysight uses proprietary Indium Phosphide (InP) technology to achieve this milestone. Keysight developed the second generation of InP chips with a decreased

BÜLTE LAUNCHES A NEW RANGE OF ADJUSTABLE FEET: THE « SF » RANGE

O

ur range of levelling/adjustable feet has recently been extended with the “adjustable feet SF” range. The product is composed of a round base (various diameter available) and a hexagon shaped base above the foot. These new adjustable feet have been introduced to the market beginning of February 2019. This new range of adjustable feet is fully in Nylon, both the threaded part and the feet, contrary to the levelling feet usually available on the market that are more a mix between metal and plastic. In comparison with the metal-plastic combined products, Nylon offers various advantages; it is lighter, cheaper, and easier to recycle. It does not conduct electricity and is also not subject to corrosion. Polyamide thus allows the use of our “adjustable feet SF” in areas subject to corrosion which, for reasons of hygiene or for specific regulations, require materials resistant to it. The hex end in the base allows fastening with a spanner. The nylon base, available in 4 different diameters, provides a smooth non-abrasive surface that protects floors. Our

Tools need to be Secure Tools are used across a wide range of industries and are used to process materials of all kinds, whether forming machines are to process steel, aluminium, or plastics, or cutting machines are used for processing materials such as wood, special high-performance tools are constantly required during the manufacturing process. When not in use, these tools have to be stored in a number of different ways. Tools are frequently stored in several tool cabinets and boxes of various sizes distributed throughout the entire production area. This takes up valuable space, not to mention the fact that the parts are difficult to access. Challenges associated with a changing market means there are demands in relation to efficiency and costs. The use of modern manufacturing structures in production goes hand in hand with rising intralogistic market demands for greater storage flexibility. Tools come in all shapes, and sizes and there is a requirement to store large to smaller storage volumes in one ergonomically designed space. This means that the pressure in relation to increased efficiency also grows on traditional storage methods. Significant improvements can be made in this area simply by introducing a central tool store with the help of an automated storage lift such as a shuttle from Kardex Remstar. The accommodation of various tools in a few different types of boxes or tool holders with precisely tailored dimensions brings further advantages, because optimal use can be made of the depth

and height within the storage space. In addition, it is often the case that the instruments and tools used are extremely sensitive. Ensuring that fast and accurate access to stored tools is a must and there needs to be a focus on safe, secure and clean storage. Modern storage lift systems have an advantage here. Parts can be placed in compartments precisely adapted to their specific dimensions on the trays, thereby limiting the contact these sensitive parts have with their surroundings from the outset. In addition, there are special devices in the shuttles which guarantee dust-free and dry storage. Storing the tools at a certain temperature or drying them with warm air is also no problem. These are all options that conventional shelf-based storage cannot offer. Dynamic systems such as automated storage lifts offer more opportunities to optimise the efficiency of intralogistics processes. Faster and more accurate access to the stored parts is but one

example of a more up-to-date storage method. A major advantages is less hunting and walking around for employees thanks to the goods-to-person principle. Then there is fast and accurate access to stored goods, controlled by warehouse management software, which avoids unproductive search times and increases picking accuracy to over 99 percent. It’s worth noting that the use of warehouse management software also permits accurate monitoring and management of the entire storage process. Space is also a major advantage as a shuttle makes optimal use of the room height and space in the building thanks to customised installation of the system. The compact design of the units can significantly reduce the size of the footprint and with ergonomically designed workspaces, which work according to the goods-to-person principle, cut the amount of time that employees are absent from work. This means it is no longer necessary to

spend a long time instructing the order pickers or familiarising them with the system. Companies looking to remain competitive are recognising the requirements involved in tool storage and are switching to automated storage lift systems to manage their intralogistics processes. EP & Powder Handling System

CJ Waterhouse Company Limited were originally approached in summer 2017 by a worldwide manufacturing company to design, manufacture and implement a bespoke materials handling and automation solution for their new expanded polystyrene (EP) processing plant. CJ Waterhouse were awarded the contract due to their extensive bespoke materials handling system solution experience and their previous works within the group. The overall system takes in varying sizes of EP, creates a volumetric batch and transfers it to one of 12 blenders. Fibre materials are then introduced to the blender by weight together with liquid resins and additives. The finished product formed is a coated EP which is then conveyed to an out-loading system where weighed batches are created. The completed weighed batches are then used either in the downstream manufacturing process or sold on to third party manufactures for the production of industrial floatation devices for offshore applications. The developed system essentially comprises of six component parts: • • • • • •

EP intake EP measurement EP delivery Fibre delivery Finished product batching Control system

EP Intake The EP intake system allows EP material of 5mm, 10mm and 40mm diameter to be delivered either by 2M3 tote bins or by bulk lorry. For lorry delivery the conveying system is directly coupled to the truck discharge chute and for tote bin deliveries an extraction lance is inserted into the container. The EP material is transferred to four 65M3 bulk fabric silos via a Venturi conveying system providing negative pressure extraction at the infeed point and positive pressure conveying at the discharge point. A single conveying line is used which incorporates three diverter valves to provide automated routing to any of the four silos dependent upon material type and current level. The fabric silos incorporate a bespoke intake manifold and breathable upper surface to permit conveying air expulsion and material retention. Level monitoring within the silos is achieved using Ultrasonic sensors to provide an accurate measurement of the internal material volume together with upper and lower set points for filling and discharging purposes. Silo discharging is via a bespoke slide valve and extraction chute assembly

coupled to the downstream conveying line. EP Measurement Due to the very low and potentially fluctuating bulk density of the EP batches are measured by volume rather than by weight. The EP measurement system again utilises a Venturi conveying system to extract material from the silo and deliver it to a fabric receiving hopper situated above the volumetric measurement hopper. The receiving hopper


May 2019 incorporates the same feed manifold and conveying air removal system as the bulk silos and is fitted with a rotary discharge valve to supply material to the volumetric hopper beneath. The rotary valve is utilised to ensure a controlled and constant feed rate of EP is achieved into the volumetric hopper to enhance volume accuracy. The volumetric hopper is designed to produce a known volume batch of EP in accordance with the pre-specified recipe requirements. Upon receipt of the recipe information the rotary valve will begin to discharge material into the volumetric hopper. The material level within the hopper is continuously monitored using three ultrasonic sensors which take an average reading from 3 separate positions within the hopper to compensate for potential level fluctuations across the upper surface. This averaged level reading is used to calculate the material batch volume, upon reaching the required batch volume the rotary valve will stop and the batch is identified as complete and ready for transfer to the required tumbler destination. EP Delivery The EP delivery system transfers the pre-measured batch of material from the volumetric hopper to the required tumbler destination. This transfer is again completed using a Venturi conveying system via a single conveying pipe which incorporates eleven diverter valves to permit automated routing to any of the twelve tumblers. Upon receipt of the transfer request and confirmation of interlock satisfaction the volumetric hopper discharge valve is opened, the conveying system blower is started and material is removed from the hopper under negative pressure. The EP material is conveyed directly into the tumbler through a dedicated connection spigot and conveying air is expelled through the tumbler vent assembly. Fibre Delivery The twelve tumblers are divided into two groups of six. The fibre delivery system to group one is of semiautomatic operation with material extracted from sacks whilst the delivery to group two is fully automated with extraction from bulk bags. Each tumbler is equipped with the same fibre feed system which comprises of an agitated feed hopper and discharge screw to convey material into the tumbler. Above this feed hopper is a vacuum conveying hopper which is mounted upon a multi-point load cell weigh frame to provide accurate batch weighment of fibre materials. With the semi-automated system the operator is required to manually insert the extraction lance into the fibre material sack. Material is then conveyed from the sack under vacuum to the weigh hopper, upon reaching the required target weight the vacuum conveying system stops and the weigher discharge valve opens therefore dropping the contents into the feed hopper beneath. If multiple fibre inclusions are required then the above process is

repeated until all recipe requirements are fulfilled. The automated fibre delivery system operates similarly to the manual system, however materials are conveyed to the vacuum weigh hoppers directly from one of two FIBC discharge stations. Both discharge stations incorporate drop through rotary valves to control the feed of material into a single conveying line. Five diverter valves are positioned within the conveying line to permit the automated routing of material to any of the six tumbler lines.

Finished Product Batching The finished product (coated EP) is extracted from the tumbler and transferred to a storage hopper using a Venturi conveying system as with the uncoated EP systems. The storage hopper is fitted with a bespoke air separator unit which is designed to reduce the product velocity and remove surplus conveying air. From the storage hopper the finished product is discharged into a weighed tote bin via a multi-position slide valve. The operator sets the required batch weight from the local HMI display panel before commencing the discharge sequence, upon arrival at the target weight the discharge valve closes. The tote bin is then removed and replace with an empty one before the next batch discharge commences.

May 2019 Control System The control philosophy for the EPS and fibre handling system comprises of a central automation panel housing the main PLC and HMI display with a number of distributed remote I/O and operator display panels. The central master HMI and remote HMI display screens provide the operators with both a graphical representation of the physical plant arrangement and specific data relating to the current system status together with operation prompting and alarm monitoring. Automated control setup and manual operation of certain functions is also provided via data entry and push button functionality. In addition to the above engineering & diagnosis functionality is provides via a number of password protected engineering pages. Central Automation Panel The central automation panel houses the main Siemens S7 PLC which provides automated control of the EP intake, measurement and delivery system. This panel also incorporates the master HMI screen providing graphical and data information, system controls, alarm monitoring and configuration for the entire materials handling system. Intake display panel The intake panel is located adjacent to the EP unloading area and incorporates a HMI unit providing specific information relating to the EP intake system. This display provides system information, controls, alarm monitoring, configuration and allows the operator to set the delivery type, intake material, silo destination and conveying parameters.

Fibre conveying panels 1 – 12 Each fibre weigher incorporates a locally mounted control panel housing a remote I/O module together with motor starters & variable speed drive for the associated feeder station. These panels provide automated control of the fibre conveying, weighing and feeding to the blender. Outloading panel The out-loading panel is located adjacent to the finished product weighing system and incorporates a remote I/O module providing automated control of the finished product conveying, storage and weighing system. This panel also incorporates a HMI display providing operator information for the tote bin filling and weighing system. Network hub panel All communication between plant control panels is provided via an Ethernet network. The Network panel provides a central connection hub for the Ethernet network.
