Atlas Copco rolls out low reaction tool range Leading global manufacturer of fastening solutions, Atlas Copco, has launched a pioneering range of ‘Low Reaction’ (LRT) tools.
The new line-up of battery and DC-powered tools has been developed specifically as part of Atlas Copco’s Smart Connected Assembly concept, to improve both operator ergonomics and factory optimisation. This includes a Transducer Battery Pulse (TBP) based tool that features a hydraulic pulse unit rather than gears and an oilfilled chamber, enabling higher torque of up to 55Nm with vibration levels below the minimum standard. Delivering five million pulses before maintenance is required, operating performance is up to five times longer between service intervals. For applications involving hard joints, the integration of Atlas Copco’s TurboTight® torque management technology means that the tool, rather than the operator, absorbs the reaction force. Designed to avoid operator influence, the new range of tools also features Atlas Copco’s TrueAngle® technology, which uses a gyro signal to read operator movement, thereby increasing the accuracy of angle readings and improving controlled tightening, as well as avoiding damaged threads, re-hits and premature shut-offs.
06|
David Embley, General Manager, Atlas Copco Tools UK, commented: “Our customers are seeing increasing complexity in their product mix and demands for higher quality. A batch count of one is quite typical in today’s world of choice, so to compete, manufacturers need to produce the best quality at the lowest cost, in the quickest time. The goal is zero defects and full traceability, along with better agility to face the challenges of globalisation, new technologies and competition. “At the heart of Atlas Copco’s Smart Connected Assembly is a focus on achieving quality, productivity and traceability in complex assembly processes. Advanced tooling, software solutions and error-proofed production meets the needs of our customers in a digital world. Low reaction tooling is a key part of our vision and process control and data driven services add to the mix to equip businesses with the solutions they need. We look to maximise productivity and increase customer efficiency, whilst reducing human error and ensuring operator safety. Our customers need tangible return on investment, which is why we introduced our six pillars of value. Atlas Copco Low Reaction Tools

New models increase versatility of pump range Pumps are an essential part of many food processing lines: not just for liquids, but also viscous materials such as spreads and dips, and materials containing solids such as fruit and vegetable mixes. Using the wrong pump can have expensive consequences in terms of both potential damage to products or equipment, or higher than expected energy costs.
A
good pump needs to meet the requirements of the product, as well as normal food handling hygiene requirements, such as Cleanin-Place (CIP). There are many types of pump, but not all of them are capable of maintaining product quality at a reasonable cost, plus maintain the required pressure in the system. These challenges resulted in the production of the BP Series of piston pumps from HRS Heat Exchangers, which have been proven in hundreds of food processing environments handling everything from peppers, strawberries and baby carrots to sauces, dips, fruit purées, and many other products. Matt Hale, International Sales and Marketing Director, HRS Heat Exchangers
A positive solution The HRS BP Series is a purpose-designed reciprocating positive -displacement pump, with an expanding cavity on the suction side and a decreasing cavity on the discharge side. Material flows into the pump as the cavity on the suction side expands and is forced out of the discharge side as the cavity collapses. The BP Series features a hygienic design which incorporates a separator fitted between the piston and the hydraulic chamber to ensure that there is no contact between the product chamber and the hydraulic oil. Once the pump is in operation, no part which comes into contact with oil comes into contact with the product. The standard BP Series has an adjustable flow rate between a minimum of 200 litres/hour and a maximum of 12,000 litres/hour, and features a high pressure drop of up to 30 bar. It is suitable for a wide range of high viscosity, shear sensitive and large particlecontaining fluids. Clap valves allow pumping of whole The new HRS BPM Series fruits or vegetables, and an pump is designed to be moved between production lines or alternative piston pump with even sites, reducing capital a pneumatic cylinder can be costs and increasing flexibility supplied for low pressure applications of less than 5 bar.
Multiple production lines, one pump Following the success of the standard BP Series in a range of applications, HRS Heat Exchangers are pleased to have developed two variants. The first of these is the BPM Series, a mobile version of the standard BP Series pump. This is mounted on a mobile skid unit for easy movement, allowing it to be used across multiple production lines
08|
The new HRS BPH Series pump overcomes issues associated with priming the pump when using viscous materials
and locations, something which is increasingly popular with food manufacturers producing short runs of specialist products. Thanks to the new BPM Series, companies can enjoy the benefits of a BP Series pump across multiple production lines without the need to invest in a dedicated pump for each line, resulting in considerable capital savings.
Viscosity no problem The second addition to the range is the BPH Series. This has been specifically designed for highly viscous products, such as hummus, and especially those which are produced and packed at low temperatures. Matt Hale, International Sales and Marketing Director at HRS Heat Exchangers, explains: “When dealing with highly viscous materials, particularly at low temperatures such as hummus at 5 deg. C., the product’s thickness can make it hard to prime the pump when starting production following cleaning. The new BPH Series overcomes this. It uses a gravity-fed hopper, together with a screw conveyor, to initially push product into the body of the pump. Once the cavity on the suction side has been filled, the pump is primed and will then operate as normal with a constant stream of product.” With the addition of the BPM and BPH Series of pumps, HRS Heat Exchangers are now able to offer an increased range of pumping solutions for a variety of uses in the food sector.

Fortress removes costly equipment risks with Remote Management Software means it has the potential to be accessed from any location in the world. The rationale is to enhance the reliability, safety and production efficiency within factories while safeguarding valuable machine assets, emphasises Managing Director Phil Brown: “Traditionally, food inspection OEMs make screen display membranes bigger, easier to use or introduce colour displays to improve communications. Yet, these advances actually make control panels less robust in wet, dusty and harsh production environments, increasing the risk of damage and subsequent machine downtime. Plus, they are more costly to replace.” Activity reports, exported on demand in Excel or PDF format, can be selected for a specific production line and/or time period for fully traceable Quality Assurance information. For record keeping, event and performance information is stored securely and remotely for a minimum of 10 years, with the option to extend storage capability to 20+ years. Each event is automatically time stamped to comply with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) food safety management systems and principles.
I
n fast paced, harsh or cramped food production and packing lines, where metal detectors are subject to rigorous washdowns and knocks from operatives, modern machine control panels are especially vulnerable to damage. While most are designed to withstand water ingress, Fortress Technology reports that these delicate screens can be a costly item to replace, with machine inoperability caused by a single panel failure significantly impacting line productivity. The answer, recently launched by the company, is to take the high risk item out of the environment and manage operations from anywhere in the world using wireless machine-tomachine (M2M) communication on any portable device. Believed to be the first-of-its kind web-based browser, Remote Management Software (RMS) connects multiple Fortress metal detectors to familiar consumer electronics, including mobiles, tablets and laptops. Customers can log in and access the system via a local website built within the detector, which
For large or multi-site factories, this level of oversight is especially helpful for supporting flexible production. It means one operative or production manager can monitor all their company’s metal detectors, analysing comparative data for different inspection zones, side-by-side. An unlimited number of Fortress metal detectors can be connected wirelessly using a powerful backend SQL to monitor activity and generate reports. “When it comes to digitisation in the food factories of the future, data analytics and intelligence will be central,” notes Phil. “With RMS, Fortress is helping to bridge the gap between consumer and industrial technology and theory and commercialisation.” Aside from safeguarding valuable local machine assets, having software that connects metal detectors wherever they are located in the world means that multinational organisations can stay in touch with operations in remote manufacturing hubs or politically volatile regions. “Having centralised control enables food manufacturers to analyse machine performance across multiple sites and troubleshoot technology issues, without having to be physically in front of machine,” adds Phil.

LR 35 Its Here and It’s Unique The LR 35 Vertical Buffer Module - Innovation for cost-effective inventory management
With Intralogistics under pressure in terms of efficiency, there is a need for more flexibility to stock a wider range of items within a smaller space, and guarantee faster retrieval times. At the same time, storage and handling requirements are increasingly shifting towards bins. To cope with these demands, Kardex Remstar has developed a new generation of storage systems, which offer high order picking performance , while consuming little energy and occupying little space. The LR 35 Vertical Buffer Module is an innovative solution for spare parts inventory management, but what was the experience for an early adopter of the LR 35? For Kardex customer Schrauwen, they became one of the first to purchase and install the LR 35 as an order picking solution for articles. This brought together the technology of the mini load ‘storage’ system, with an integrated order picking station. The principal aim was to align the storage of a large number of articles supplied by an automated mini load system with the speed of an order preparation station. View Video here Besides its high picking performance, the Kardex Remstar LR 35 occupies less space and consumes much less energy than a mini-load system. If a mini-load system is capable of a maximum of 130 double cycles, for example, the LR 35 can perform up to 500 order lines per picking station/hour while occupying just 60 percent of the space. Further, the LR 35 consumes just a third of the energy of a miniload system due to its lightweight design. The LR 35 is designed for fast retrieval making it the perfect fit for spare parts and MRO inventory handling, which can be expensive. According to the Pareto principle, 80 percent of a company’s revenue is generated with just 20 percent of its inventory. In contrast to fast movers, medium and slow moving goods (often spare parts or MRO inventory) comprise a high percentage of process, storage, and picking costs. This is why it is essential for them to be stored efficiently, and available as quickly as possible when needed. Kardex have a long history of innovation introducing solutions such as the Shuttle XP, the Megamat and for offices the popular Lektriever. They continue to work with organisations that recognise the short and long-term benefits that automated storage and retrieval systems can bring, delivering on the promise of improvements in labour, space saving and faster picking times. Why do automated machines fail? Deterioration caused by not maintaining basic standards and lack of operative training, stress as a result of poor design at the outset, and weaknesses, such as poor quality parts, tend to be the main factors say three automation experts.
How to ensure machinery maintenance isn’t a pain in the asset
R
epresenting the end user viewpoint is Geoff Hann (MIET), Engineering Manager at Morrisons Thrapston manufacturing site, while David Jahn, Director at Brillopak looks at maintenance from a machine build perspective, and Dan Rossek from Omron reviews the latest technology that’s helping to streamline and implement a strategy of predictive maintenance. The three experts share their tips on how to maximise Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) on food production pick and pack lines by instilling a workplace culture of pride in asset care and explain why having the basics in place can lead to greater success during the transition towards Industry 4.0. Over the last decade, food produce environments and packhouses have realised the productivity benefits that can be gained by being less reactive to maintenance tasks and adopting a proactive approach to asset care. “From an end-user’s perspective, a key driver behind this change has been the growing acceptance of OEE as a measure for a company’s productivity,” says Omron’s Dan Rossek. Brillopak’s David Jahn agrees saying: “Machine technology is just one aspect of automation. In a marginal business like fresh produce packing, if a production line stops or slows down to accommodate a hold up further up the line, that eats into productivity and therefore profits. The whole process, from weighing and flow-wrapping
18|
produce to loading it into a case for palletising must run seamlessly in order to optimise OEE. Operatives need to feel confident and familiar with equipment. Chaotic layouts, factory clutter and workforce hostility towards automation are probably the most common reasons that production gets disrupted.” For Geoff Hann, greater productivity and machine availability starts with getting the entire workforce, from machine operatives to managers, engaged with 5S. Originating from Toyota in Japan the late 1950s, the Kaizen-inspired 5S pillars creates a sense of ownership and empowerment among the workforce while introducing better housekeeping standards says Geoff. “Being orderly, clean and standardised in your approach to automated machinery care is the foundation of a good asset care and maintenance programme,” he emphasises. Back to basics The lifespan of automated equipment will vary by application and depends how hard each machine is worked and how well it’s looked after, notes David. “Maintained correctly, and providing flexibility has been built into the initial design, an automated packing system could last over 20 years,” he suggests. Christeyns Food Hygiene launches the ultimate CIP Solution Christeyns Food Hygiene, based in Warrington, has partnered with H&M Disinfection Systems to launch a new, bespoke containerised CIP system for optimising cleaning equipment in the food and dairy industry. Container In Place is a bespoke, containerised Cleaning in Place (CIP) system which comes fully loaded and self-contained, ready to be connected directly to existing pipework, tanks and associated equipment, providing an immediate and cost-effective upgrade to cleaning requirements. In many plants CIP equipment can be old and those responsible for it’s specification, installation and setting of parameters may no longer be with the business. In addition, modifications to the CIP set may have taken place over time, changing the original operating parameters or flow dynamics, which can affect the efficacy of a clean. Emerging food safety challenges in recent years, such as allergen management and species control, may have also placed additional burdens on the equipment. Modernising or replacing a CIP set itself requires capital expenditure which may be

difficult to secure. There is also the challenge of being able to assign a sufficient break in a production schedule to actually replace pumps, tanks, heat exchangers and control equipment. This new Container in Place system is completely self-contained with its own heating system and as it only requires a water and power source it can be flexibly situated. The system also provides full PLC control, CIP printed reports and remote access. The full system fits inside a standard 20 foot shipping container and can be built to order in around three months. The Container in Place not only frees up factory space but also allows a CIP system to grow as business grows, without any interruption in production. It also acts as a back-up system during breakdowns or maintenance. Providing flexible solutions for cleaning and sanitising, tailored to individual needs is what Christeyns Food Hygiene does best. With around 30 years of experience, it is one of the UK’s most trusted providers of industrial hygiene solutions, working across the food, beverage, brewing, dairy and pharmaceutical industries. www.christeynsfoodhygiene.co.uk uk-foodinfo@christeyns.com

Yorkshire-based Contract Production Ltd has increased its capacity by 400% virtually overnight thanks to a £250,000 investment in new technology. Contract Production manufactures a range of subcontract electronic products and printed circuit board assemblies for a wide variety of industries. This can be one-off prototypes, up to volumes in their 10,000’s. A recent investment and installation of an AM100 Panasonic Pick and Place line has enabled the company to increase its output by an astonishing 400%.
T
he new production line populates printed circuit boards and can place a staggering 30,000 components per hour, blowing away previous capacity limits. The investment has already led to CPL has won its largest ever customer order, only weeks after investing in new technology that made the deal possible. The new capacity on its manufacturing floor helped clinch the six-figure contract to supply more than 1000 sets of circuit boards for an overseas customer. It is hoped the contract fulfilment to stiff deadlines will lead to even larger, follow on orders. “This essentially, means that we now measure productivity in seconds not minutes,” said Managing Director Simon Norris. “Thanks to the new production line we have added an extra 30-40 weeks of working capacity to the business annually; In time, that could see our work force go from 20 employees to around 50-60 which will be great news for the area.” The new pick and place machine was manufactured in the Far East and shipped to the manufacturing base in Pickering. The system has effectively streamlined the company’s whole process, taking a bare printed circuit board, populating it and producing an inspected product at the end of the line.
26|
“Obviously, the speed depends on the complexity of the circuit board or product we are producing,” said Simon. He added: “There has been a lot of talk about the UK’s stagnating productivity levels but this investment into Contract Productions shows there is opportunity and we can now deliver on much larger orders with improved turnaround for our customers that we could only dream of a few weeks ago. It is a major leap forward technology-wise and we are all very excited about the possibilities this brings for the business and our customers.”
As well as the larger orders going into the hundreds of thousands Contract Production also produces one-off prototypes or low rate production runs for clients - often hand-placed for new products yet to go to market. These can be anything that requires circuit boards, from GPS tracking devices to wind turbines, cameras to measuring instrumentation for deep sea oil drilling rigs. The team is also attending the WNIE (What’s New in Electronics) Show in September and can be visited on Stand F62.

Spray nozzles and so much more…. Spray nozzle specialists THE SPRAY NOZZLE PEOPLE (SNP) are pleased to announce a new range of spray control products. SNP have established themselves over the last 18 years as leading experts in spray nozzle technology advising a multitude of food process, manufacturing and chemical companies on correct nozzle selection and spray process optimisation, as quite simply the control of the fluid supply to their nozzles is of vital importance. Commenting on their range of spray control products, Marketing Director Ivan Zytynski said, “We are confident in our technical expertise to specify the correct spray nozzle for any application but this is only one of all the factors that need to be considered - if the fluid supplied to that nozzle is not properly controlled.” He continued, “With a proven and solid set of air and fluid regulators now in our product range we can have more confidence our nozzle system will work as specified.” The new SNP product range includes hygienic fluid regulators, filters, air regulators and valves for use with SNP’s air atomising nozzles. The Spray Nozzle People are part of the Spray People Group.

Understanding and Applying PROFIBUS, PROFINET and IO-Link – Oct 24, Coventry Taking place at the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, this free-to-attend seminar will address the key practical issues arising from the use of digital communications technologies in automated manufacturing and process industry applications, with particular attention being paid to network design, installation and commissioning through to functional safety & cybersecurity, Industry 4.0 and EMC. Keynote Address PI Chairman Karsten Schneider will be giving the keynote presentation covering the latest developments in Time Sensitive Networking (TSN), PROFINET in Process applications, Advanced Physical Layer (APL), OPCUA and Industry 4.0 Other presentations will include: New PI Guidelines for Functional Bonding and Shielding of PROFIBUS and PROFINET The ever-increasing use of high frequency switching devices in industrial automation can result in high frequency currents circulating in an equipotential bonding network that was not designed for this purpose. The absence of a proven low-impedance bonding network can result in these currents taking alternative, and often undesirable routes. Occasionally these will be the shields of industrial network cables such as PROFIBUS and PROFINET
that in turn can lead to intermittent communications problems. This presentation will discuss the issues in more detail and will explain the relevance of the recently released PI guidelines “Functional Bonding and Shielding for PROFIBUS and PROFINET”. PROFIBUS and PROFINET device configuration tools
Link whilst also being an enabler for Industrial IoT and Industry 4.0 strategies.
A look at the available device configuration tools and their development including the move to unify the different types into one format – FDI. This will be followed by a live demonstration of PROFIBUS and PROFINET device configuration using an existing open platform and web browser option.

Keeping water (and other) vapours in or out of things By Christopher Roberts, Director, Versaperm. info@versaperm.com
V
alves, seals, barriers and mastics are designed to keep water (and other liquids) out but, sadly, they are not usually very good at keeping gases out. This leads to all sorts of problems, including condensing and being trapped as a liquid on the wrong side of any seal, barrier or inside an enclosure.
permeability problem causes valves, seals and equipment to fail, electronics to malfunction, pipes and valves to leak and enclosures to pool water. This causes a whole raft of problems such as electronic and machinery failure, jamming, rust or contamination. It has even caused missiles to fail and pizzas to go soggy!
The very act of manufacturing, including heating, forming and bending can make the problem worse – often by a factor of four! Gasses, such as water vapour, O2, CO2 and hydrocarbons can permeate through the materials, seals, coatings or barriers of which enclosures are made. Every single material does this, though the amount that varies with the gas. Silicone rubbers are examples as they are great barriers against liquid water but allow its vapour to pass through virtually unchecked.
The difficulties that can be caused by vapour permeability range across all materials and many manufacturing processes. This makes a crucial point – just because you know the stated value for the vapour permeability of a material, does not mean you can rely on that value for your production or quality control.
Versaperm’s VSM (Valves, Seals and Mastics) permeability meter can measure this for almost all industrially used gas, allowing companies to customise materials, designs and manufacturing processes to minimise this problem for their products and systems. The equipment can be used for both product development and quality control. The
44|
Manufacturing and other conditions can change it radically so the only realworld solution is to measure and quality control the permeability of the finished component or product. Surprisingly, even over-tightening the lid on some tubs can actually allow more water vapour to get in! Versaperm’s range of measurement equipment includes technically advanced systems in both off the shelf and application-customised designs.
They are accurate in the PPM (Part Per Million) to PPB range and the intuitive interfaces is easy to use - giving results in as little as 30 minutes for some materials and gases. The meters can cater for several components, mastics, seals, barriers, laminates or gaskets at the same time. Any part can be tested for permeability – either by using a specially created jig (as with the pizza mentioned earlier!) or by sealing off the other parts with non-permeable materials. You can also test material samples, including just about anything from a foil barrier through to a coating (e.g. a waterproof coating), or from a small sample up to an entire enclosure! Vapour Permeability is a surprisingly complex subject and seals, mastics, industrial films, multi-layer laminates and coatings are even more so. Results can be counter-intuitive and some seeming solutions may make the problem worse. However, getting it right can lead to better manufacturing and improved products with longer working lives with better performance. With permeability, what starts out to be a barrier, may well end up as a solution! Web: www.versaperm.com

Gas Spring Selection Just Got Easier! ACE introduces new online gas spring calculation program In just five easy steps, design engineers can now calculate and design a gas spring tailored to their application using the new gas spring calculation tool found on the www.acecontrols. co.uk website. In the past, it was necessary to contact the ACE gas spring team directly and complete a design form sent back and forth by fax or e-mail when enquiring about the selection and availability of a suitable ACE gas spring. Thanks to this new online calculation program, design is now easier, faster and can be made at any time – 24/7. Unique in the industry, the program is completely intuitive and applications can be visualized in either 2D or 3D. The most common applications of push type gas springs on hoods, flaps, hatches and machine housings can now be calculated in a few simple steps. The recommended ACE gas spring and the required mounting accessories are specified precisely. In addition, an installation sketch can be generated with the help of the online tool. In the interest of its customers, ACE uses this service to shorten the entire process from design and ordering to delivery. In the current version of the software the order is still triggered by an online inquiry; it is planned in the future, that the gas springs determined by online calculation will be available directly from an ACE e-shop. For customers who would still like help with their product selection then personal advice and assistance in the calculation and ordering of ACE gas springs is always available. Bahco team develops new bandsaw blade, the 3858 Sandflex P9000 PQ™ In their endless pursuit of excellence in bandsaw blade cutting performance, Bahco’s design and manufacturing team has developed a new blade, the 3858 Sandflex P9000 PQ™. Now available in the UK and Ireland, this bi-metal blade is produced using highly alloyed Powder Metallurgic HSS, designed for high performance cutting of all difficult materials, including hard and exotic materials. This manufacturing technique improves the hardness and toughness of the blade, resulting in excellent tooth edge performance, improved wear resistance and longer blade life. The P9000 will cut a wider range of workpiece sizes and shapes than conventional blades and deliver an excellent surface finish on all materials. More consistency in the hardness from batch to batch increases blade reliability. This remarkable new blade retains all the benefits of a traditional PQ, thanks
50|
to a consistently precise tooth height, enabling every tooth to give the same chipload when cutting. This results in more even tooth wear, which extends tooth life. It also limits the risk of overloading a tooth, guarding against tooth breakage. The tooth design improves cutting performance in special alloys with work hardening properties. A very positive rake angle of 17 ͦ enables good penetration of difficultto-cut materials and lowers the cutting forces, enabling more efficient ‘cool’ cutting. The wedge angle of 48 ͦ creates a stronger tooth. Tooth geometry of the P9000 blade is characterized by repeating groups of high and low set teeth, separated by an unset tooth. This results in the high teeth penetrating the material,
supported by the low teeth preventing overloads and breakage. Says Peter Storr, Bahco’s bandsaw blade specialist in the UK and Ireland: “Powder Metallurgy HSS provides an effective alternative to conventional HSS steels, delivering high hardness and toughness properties which can’t be obtained with traditional high speed steels. “It also has the ability to use alloying which is not possible in conventionally melted HSS, allowing more advanced alloying while still having a superior microstructure and stability. This truly leads to an excellent performance of the tooth edges.” For detailed technical information, including test performance statistics, go to: www.bahco.com

Engineering is in for the summer as MCMT launches new children’s club Children as young as nine will be getting to grips with 3D printing, coding and smart electronics this week, when a special Engineering Club takes place in Bridgnorth. on Thursday, a race to see which rocket car is the fastest. The results will be presented at a special prize giving at the end of the week, where parents will be able to see what their young people have been up to. Matthew concluded: “We have also arranged for engineers from local businesses to give various demos during the Engineering Club, ranging from the art of mechanics of classic car vehicle maintenance to advanced robotics and destructive material testing. The Marches Centre of Manufacturing & Technology (MCMT) has teamed up with Black Country Atelier (BCA) to offer an action-packed menu of activities spanning the entire five days. This includes designing and making a programmable Tamagotchi-style pet, constructing the widest bridges and tallest skyscrapers and the challenge of creating the best Rocket Car. 15 young people - aged between 9 and 13-years-old - will be supported by MCMT staff/apprentices and instructors from BCA to come up with ideas, work with hand tools and access some of the fantastic technology installed at the 36,000 sq ft facility on the Stanmore Industrial Estate. “The skills gap has been well documented and a lot of time has been spent in engaging secondary school pupils who are considering what to do next after their GCSEs,” explained Matthew Snelson, Managing Director of the MCMT. “However, what we have been missing is talking to the grassroots level, with children aged between 9 and 13. This a really key time before pupils make their subject choices, so we wanted to put on an exciting and challenging week that introduced them to STEM and the world of engineering and manufacturing.” He continued: “We need to inspire and show them that engineering can be a great career, that there’s lots of exciting technologies you can use and that you may just have an idea that will change the way we all live.” The Engineering Club will be giving future engineers and scientists a fully immersive experience of design and engineering. Children will be working on several practical, hands-on projects throughout the week, using a full range of traditional and modern engineering tools, such as hand fabrication and finishing tools, Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D printers and programmable controllers. At the end of each day, there will be a show and tell of their projects, a construction test and,

Global manufacturer Renold is investing in new WMS and ERP technology to boost the efficiency of its business
Renold plc is a global manufacturer of industrial chain, coupling and gearbox solutions. The group delivers high precision engineered and power transmission products to a wide range of markets, from cement making and chocolate manufacturing to subway trains and power stations, escalators and quarries. Renold is currently investing in new technology to drive greater efficiency and accuracy in its processes, replacing its former ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems and also introducing new WMS (warehouse management) systems, worldwide. “There is a great deal of raw material movement in our business and we need to know where our inventory is at any time” explains group business systems director Sarah Cobb, who is driving the change. “Clearly, inventory accuracy underpins any successful systems implementation
58|
of this kind: it boosts efficiency when you know exactly where the inventory is located that you need for a given operation. We have a very broad customer base, which is a good thing, but breadth and diversity demand good systems to underpin the business” Sarah Cobb adds. For historic reasons Renold had a myriad of ERP systems across the group (and a fragmented systems history) but is now moving to a single ERP. It is currently rolling out the Infor M3 ERP system across more than 20 manufacturing, distribution and sales sites including America, South Africa, China, India, Germany and Australia, alongside TouchPath’s ‘TouchWMS’ system, which can be integrated with any ERP. “TouchWMS is a flexible, tried and tested system that does exactly what it says on the tin” Sarah Cobb observes. This is the group’s first foray into WMS, though
Cobb does have previous personal experience of TouchWMS - https:// touchpath.com/solutions/warehousemanagement-systems-wms/ To date the WMS has been well received by Renold users including those in Cardiff, Germany and Switzerland (around 120 employees in total) where the tangible benefits of barcoding - the first WMS application to be implemented across the group - already seemed to have overcome any early user reservations. WMS implementation in India and China is planned for 2018 alongside M3 ERP. Renold’s UK site in Cardiff is already live with both M3 ERP and TouchWMS. Its US site in Tennessee is also live; there the company currently uses SAP, but now integrated with TouchWMS. “Over time, the role of WMS in Renold will grow, but our first WMS step, all-sites barcoding for all inventory movements is already having a marked and measurable impact on the business”, Sarah Cobb concludes. www.renold.com www.touchpath.com

Capacitive Update
More capacitive sensors from ifm As market leader ifm electronic knows a thing or two about capacitive proximity sensors, and constantly strives to provide the latest innovations in this field as in many others. A very common use of capacitive sensors is found in point level detection through non-metallic materials. In such cases there might be a build-up of product on the sensor that cannot be seen from outside, but prevents detection of the true level. Setting the sensor to react correctly in such conditions is a challenge that ifm electronic has risen to with their latest models, and have implemented no one but two solutions. First of all, these latest capacitive sensors are equipped with IO-Link. When used with setting software, such as the LineRecorder Device from ifm electronic, the user can virtually ‘see’ what the sensor is detecting. This makes setting the sensitivity, and other features such as a time delay, extremely simple. Not everyone may want to make use of this facility, though, so the second option built in to the sensors is a display of the relative sensitivity. This intuitive visualisation helps enormously by showing the user the effect of both the product and of turning the potentiometer. The new design is available in the popular M30 housing, in
62|
cabled and connector variants, and now includes the same options in M18. Both sizes can be supplied with either a fixed or a selectable switching function, and as flush or non-flush mountable versions. ifm electronic offers a wide range of accessories to optimise installation and mounting, and support is always available.

Extended Life All Polypropylene Depth Filter Cartridges Amazon Filters has developed a proprietary extended life (XP) filter media for more challenging filtration applications where the operational life of standard polypropylene (PP) filter cartridges is unacceptably short. This media has been developed because microfiltration is not just about the removal of solid spherical particles. In more challenging applications contaminates can be gelatinous or agglomerates that are able to extrude or bend shape enabling them to pass through a standard polypropylene depth filter matrix. Designed with a multi-layered Polypropylene construction and progressively finer layers (up to 7 layers in certain micron ratings), Amazon Filters XP filter media enhances built-in prefiltration capacity, thereby providing significantly longer operational life in challenging applications. Stainless Steel Filter Delivers Dry Culinary Grade Steam Amazon Filters SupaMesh stainless steel filter cartridges are the perfect tool for ensuring only culinary-grade steam is used in your food and beverage production process. When producing steam that will come into contact either directly or indirectly with food and beverage products it must be of culinary grade (3A-60903). Consequently, a boiler producing steam should only use FDA approved corrosion inhibitors and the steam should be filtered as close to the point of use as possible with a filter that provides 95% retention of 2-micron particles. While dry saturated steam is the goal, in practice, the steam will be between 90 and 95% dryness fraction. Any entrained water results in the efficiency of any filter being reduced. To enable production of dry saturated culinary grade steam - Amazon Filters have introduced a 3-micron rated version of its SupaMesh filter, which even when wet will provide

The new ELX EtherCAT Terminals with added TwinSAFE SC technology enable highly compact safety solutions in hazardous areas.
ELX series EtherCAT Terminals expanded with TwinSAFE SC technology Intrinsically safe signal transmission and functional safety combined in one highly compact package The EtherCAT Terminals in the ELX series have been expanded by the addition of analog input terminals with TwinSAFE SC (Single Channel) technology. These highly compact I/O terminals can be used to support applications in hazardous areas that require both intrinsically safe signal transmission and functional safety capabilities. The highly compact ELX series terminals, which are certified in compliance with the specifications of the ATEX and IECEx standards, enable direct connection of intrinsically safe field devices through to Zone 0/20 based on an integrated safety barrier. The new terminal designs extended by TwinSAFE SC technology now also make it possible to achieve a safety level equivalent to PL d/Cat. 3 according to EN ISO 13849-1 or SIL 2 according to EN 62061. In this way, it is possible to use all process data existing in a system for safety technology too, such as to monitor the speed of fans in areas sensitive to explosion hazards, for example. The new I/Os are available as 12 mm wide terminals with two or four analog input channels for 0/4…20 mA, and for RTD resistance sensors, thermocouples/
74|
mV and strain gauges. Furthermore, a single-channel terminal is available for the direct connection of intrinsically safe incremental encoders, which evaluates a diagnostic-enabled NAMUR signal in accordance with IEC 60947-5-6.
TwinSAFE SC technology With the aid of TwinSAFE SC technology, it is possible to make use of standard signals for safety-related tasks in any network or fieldbus system. The data from a TwinSAFE SC terminal is fed to the TwinSAFE Logic, where it undergoes safety-related multi-channel processing. The data originating from different sources is analysed, checked for plausibility and submitted to a “voting” process. This is done by certified function blocks such as Scale, Compare/Voting (1oo2, 2oo3, 3oo5), Limit, etc. For safety reasons, however, at least one of the data sources must be a TwinSAFE SC component.

Digitally retrofitting real-time production monitoring to plastic injection moulding manufacturing lines: benefits include better productivity, cost savings and extended machine lifetimes One of the key issues facing today’s manufacturing industry is how to improve the productivity of existing production lines for minimum cost outlay. This article demonstrates how a “digital retrofit” of integrating additional intelligent devices and sensor technology into a wellestablished production line of plastics injection moulding machines can help to achieve these objectives.
Introduction An important element of Industry 4.0 is the ability to apply digitalisation to the production environment by adding more intelligence into the existing process. Initially manufacturers have been wary of Industry 4.0, on the assumption that effective implementation would require expensive major changes to production lines. However, through a digital retrofit approach, it is possible to “smarten” up existing processes for minimal cost over a short period of time, resulting in a fast return on investment and immediate productivity gains.
76|
Digital retrofit provides four different ways to improve production processes, increase cost savings and extend the lifetime of different types of machinery: Legacy machine protocol conversion; Condition monitoring / Energy measurement; Asset management; and Predictive maintenance.
Legacy machine protocol conversion Central machine monitoring and process optimisation offer the best way to ensure that production lines and their associated constituent parts operate more effectively and economically. Many machines in wellestablished production lines, which may be between 15 and 30 years old, can still perform their main functional tasks successfully. However, they do so much less efficiently than their modern-day counterparts. For example, they do not have the same level of computing power, enough memory capacity to record and store relevant data, or the ability to communicate with their modern
equivalents. In many cases, these machines also use data formats and operating communication language protocols from the 1980s and 1990s, which are no longer used by today’s PLCs and industrial PCs. A prime example of a production environment that accommodates mixed protocol legacy machines would be a plastics injection moulding machine (PIMM) line. Such machines, when well maintained, can attain as much as a 30-year operational life. However, some of the older software protocol operating languages (e.g. EUROMAP 15), cannot be directly connected to a factory MES (Manufacturing Execution System) without expensive annual custom software licensing charges. In a lot of factories these machines still require individual programming by an operator, which can be very time consuming for reasonably large installations and therefore potentially requiring input from multiple personnel.

Batteries for autonomous robots Why OEMs need to consider the power needs of modern service robots Since industrial six-axis robots were popularised back in the 1960s, the technology that makes up robots, as well as the way in which we now use robots, has changed considerably. Here, Jonathan Wilkins, marketing director at obsolete equipment supplier EU Automation, argues that the way we power these new devices needs to be reassessed to meet the needs of new applications such as autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). What was once considered a high-risk sector, where robots were relegated to operating in cells and cages behind nogo zones, has changed to one where robots can now work in collaboration with human workers. Advances in motor technology, actuation, gearing, proximity sensing and artificial intelligence has resulted in the advent of various robots, such as CoBots, that are portable enough to be desktop mounted, as well as autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) that can move freely around a facility. These systems are not only capable of delivering high payloads weighing hundreds of kilograms, but are also sensitive enough to sense the presence of a human being at distances ranging from a few millimetres to a few metres. The robot can then respond in under a millisecond to stimuli, such as a person
reaching out to guide the robot’s hand, and automatically change its power and force-limiting system to respond accordingly. Although six-axis robots and CoBots are predominantly mains powered, portable AMR service robots are gaining popularity in sectors as diverse as industrial manufacturing, warehousing, healthcare and even hotels. In these settings, they can operate 24/7, only taking themselves out of action for charging and taken offline by an engineer for essential repairs and maintenance. In the warehousing sector, for example, the picking and packing process can be manually intensive, with operators walking up and down long aisles picking products from a shelf to fulfil each order. This is a time consuming and inefficient process that adds time to the customer order. Using an autonomous mobile robot in this situation can allow the compact robot to pick up the shelf and move it to the human operator in true “goods-to-man” style. However, this demanding use-cycle prompts the question: are the batteries that power these robots sufficiently suited to this new environment? To answer this, we need to understand the types of batteries used.
The two most popular types of secondary, rechargeable, battery are sealed lead acid (SLA) and lithium-ion (liion). Having been around for nearly 160 years, lead acid technology is capable of delivering high surge currents due to its low impedance. However, this type of battery can be large and heavy, making it impractical for smaller machines. Alternatively, lithium-ion provides the highest density and delivers the highest energy-to-weight ratio of any battery chemistry, which allows design engineers to use it in even the most compact devices. It also maintains a stable voltage throughout its discharge cycle, resulting in highly efficient, long runtimes. When choosing robotic systems for their application, it’s important that engineers match the right type of battery to the load. As we increasingly begin to rely on smart factories with high levels of portable and mobile automation, considering the power needs of each device will be vital in delivering long run times with high efficiency. MGA-A: no tin whiskers, no tin dendrites SCHURTER extends its successful MGA / MGA-S line of 1206 dimension SMD ceramic fuses with an aviation version that is tin whisker free and completely dispenses with leaded coating
C
rystalline tin dendrites and tin whiskers pose a considerable risk of short circuits in highly dense electronics. Dendrites form during the electrodeposition process, whereby heavy marks could appear on the fuse end caps or housing. A thorough inspection and cleaning is required according to MILPRF 23419. Tin whiskers form after the electro-deposition process. The cause is not well understood, although adding lead to otherwise pure tin soldering is commonly used as a preventable measure. However, lead has become an unwanted element according to many environmental initiatives, e.g. RoHS directives. For this reason, SCHURTER has extended the successful SMD thin-film fuse family MGA with the new A variant. In addition to the classic MGA and the ESA-certified MGA-S space fuse, the aviation version, MGA-A, uses gold alternatively to lead. Gold plated end caps provide a surface where neither whiskers nor dendrites can form. This makes the new MGA-A a safe solution for use in not only highly sensitive electronics in the aviation industry but often suffices for use in the industrial grade space sector The technical design is similar to that of the ESA-certified MGA-S. This means: hermetically sealed, ultra-robust
80|
construction, which is ideally suited for use in intrinsically safe applications according to ATEX and IECEx requirements. Despite its very small footprint (1206), the MGA-A has a particularly high breaking capacity of up to 300 A at 125 VDC and can be used in a wide temperature range of -55 °C to +125 °C.
Unique Selling Proposition • No tin whiskers, no tin dendrites • No leaded coating (RoHS conform) • Similar fuse qualification as in MIL-PRF 23419 • Hermetically sealed and robust construction
The new MGA-A from SCHURTER is suitable for all applications where the highest demands are placed on reliability and availability. Datasheet MGA-A

Transport System with Buffer & Sorter for the Production of Cast Parts Using a range of products, mk were able to restore autonomy to their customer’s production line.
There were two machining stations in a production process for cast parts that need to be interlinked. The upstream and downstream machines have different cycle times. Two different part types are produced on the line simultaneously and they are placed on the interlink system in no particular order. They must be presented to the subsequent machine sorted and with a cycle time of about 30 seconds per part. The cast parts are washed and have sharp edges but mk needed to ensure that they transported the items without damaging them. They needed to lie directly on the conveying medium so that a separate workpiece carrier is not required. The system had to run reliably for the customer’s three-shift operation. mk have achieved this by designing a transport system consisting of
82|
ZRF-P 2040 twin-lane timing belt conveyors arranged a top of one another. The timing belts have a cut-resistant coating on the transport side with side rails preventing the parts from falling. The timing belt conveyors are each about 8 metres in length and serve as buffer lines. The system can store a total of 50 workpieces. A distributor shuttle sorts the workpieces by type onto two additional ZRF-P 2040 timing belt conveyors. A shift register ensures that the different types are correctly assigned. The distributor shuttle is a threeaxis unit consisting of a lift and a traversing unit to which a timing belt conveyor is mounted. The lift is built from an LZR 2005 linear module with a stroke of about 1100 mm and it is driven by a motor with a brake. The traversing unit is also built from a linear module, with a horizontal stroke of about 640 mm. The ZRF-P 2010 timing belt conveyor
provides movement along the Z-axis. mk’s customer has restored autonomy to their line and all the mechanical elements they required have come from the extensive mk range.

Convenient cable test and diagnostics - even in the city!
T
he new Megger Centrix City cable test van has been specifically developed to allow users to take advanced cable testing and diagnostic facilities right into the heart of congested cities, where access may be difficult for larger cable test vehicles. An invaluable aid for reducing downtime in low-voltage networks, the Centrix City is based on the proven and highly regarded Megger Centrix design, which allows all major functions to be accessed through an intuitive single-dial user interface. Centrix City cable test vans provide single-phase connections for all HV operating modes, and threephase connections for reflectometer measurements. According to their requirements, users can specify vans with VLF CR 40 or VLF CR 60 test systems, which work with cosine-rectangular test waveforms
84|
at a frequency of 0.1 Hz, or they can opt for the TDM 4540 test set that additionally offers sine wave VLF and partial discharge mapping using the damped AC (DAC) testing method. All of the options include extensive safety features that inhibit operation unless all connections, including earth connections, have been made correctly. The Centrix City is available in three main configurations, fault locating only, testing and diagnostics only, or a combined version of fault locating and testing and diagnostics. For fault locating the chosen system is complemented by a Teleflex time domain reflectometer (TDR), which supports direct TDR operation as well as arc-reflection (ARMÂŽ) techniques for accurate and efficient pre-location of a wide range of fault types. To ensure easy operation, even for inexperienced users, Teleflex TDRs provide automatic configuration,
automatic cable measurement and automatic fault location. Full manual control is also provided for experienced users. The results produced by the equipment on board the Centrix City vehicle are automatically loaded into MeggerBook Cable, an intelligent database software package that has been developed specifically for cable management applications. This ensures that valuable information is always securely stored and readily accessible. The results can be printed immediately, or saved in pdf format for subsequent archiving and export. As well as the on-board test equipment, Centrix City vehicles provide convenient accommodation for connecting cables, which are located on readily accessible reels at the rear of the vehicle. These cables can be supplied in a wide range of configurations to match the user’s exact requirements.

Progressive cavity pumps for efficient waste removal Thanks to their versatility and reliability, progressive cavity (PC) pumps continue to remain popular among food processors for a variety of product transfer duties including waste removal of by-products and waste. Most food plants generate by-products, particularly if engaged in primary processing and these must be removed from production areas as efficiently and hygienically as possible, complying with ABP regulations, incurring minimal costs whilst maximising any potential revenue. Traditional removal methods for solid waste include: manual removal using tote bins; blown air systems and vacuum systems; and water flumes. Food processors often use a combination of these, however, they can incur high running costs in the form of manual labour, energy use or water treatment. PC pumps offer an alternative, removing waste in enclosed pipework from both high care and low risk areas, with low energy and labour demands.
Chopping with pumping SEEPEX has designed a progressive cavity pump that can chop and pump in the same unit, removing solid waste containing up to 40% dry solids (ds), without the need to add water. This open-hopper PC pump features an auger feed into fixed and rotating knives that can chop most products, producing a lower volume of waste which is easier to handle. Discarded products, raw materials, trimmings and rejects can all be handled within a single multipurpose unit enabling efficient and hygienic removal from both high care and low risk areas. Food processors gain a solution that delivers low cost removal while preserving the highest residual value of their by-products – particularly if the resultant ‘soup’ is sent to be converted into biogas.
PCPs in action SEEPEX has provided a series of bespoke pumping solutions to Natures Way Foods, a manufacturer of fresh convenient foods including ready-toeat fruit, and mixed fruit packs. The preparation of the finished products generates peelings, cores and stone waste, all of which must be removed from production areas. Their existing systems were not able to handle the volume or variable nature of either the different fruit types or the
process methods, some of which are automated whilst others rely on hand trimming. To combat this, SEEPEX has installed three different PC pump systems to handle different waste types and to fit within the factory configurations. They have low energy requirements compared to blown or vacuum systems and require no additional water to function efficiently. Their versatility and modular design enables them to cope with all the waste products, delivering cost savings and improved hygiene for today’s food processors.

Securing electrical components: How fasteners can be used for security
regardless of the environment it is operating in, as they are often securing expensive or function-critical electrical components. The global climate has changed considerably over the last few decades in regards to the way that we work, integrate, communicate and travel. The development of mass air travel, smartphones and other pieces of technology has completely transformed the way in which we operate our daily lives. Whilst these innovations have become crucial assets in our global society, an undeniable new set of risks and dangers have evolved alongside these modernizations in technology and the expansion of globalisation, which have to be considered in manufacturing. Thieves, vandals and securing safetycritical components (such as on an passenger aircraft) are some examples as to why security fasteners are now becoming integral in product design. Manufacturers of technology have to be aware of these risks and produce
86|
products that seek to reduce any potential dangers to users or by those with immoral intensions. Within these design considerations, security fasteners have taken a primary role. As they come in all shapes and sizes, security fasteners are designed in accordance with new technology developments, usually for a specific product design. At their most basic level, they provide a fastener function, keeping the product components together and helping to ensure that they work effectively and efficiently. However, they are different to traditional fasteners as they must have additional security features to prevent removal of the component. It’s crucial that security fasteners must be tamper-resistant and vandal-proof, in order to maintain the functionality of the product they are contained with,
This is accomplished by designing technology into the fasteners that prevent anyone from undoing the fastening without specialist equipment, or training. An example of this would be that on some designs, the outward shape of the screw may be very different to its actual shape within the product. Security fasteners could be designed to have increased frictional resistance with the bolt, preventing any rotation and thus preventing the nut from loosening. Available in a range of sizes, these fasteners can be used across product types and variations and be adjusted to specific environments or requirements. By implementing security and tamperresistant engineering right at the beginning of the product development phase, we can ensure we are doing all we can to contribute to a safer and more secure world. www.trfastenings.com

Palletiser robot boosts productivity and takes the strain for solidboard converter A consistent investment strategy, based around a growing demand for solidboard food packaging, has seen the recent installation of a robotic palletising system at Heathpak Limited. Contributing to a 20% increase in productivity, the palletiser has also allowed the upskilling of the existing production team.
between each layer. Provided initially with 9 programmes the Kawasaki robot provides the ability for great flexibility in particular over dedicated palletiser systems. Lyndon Whitlock continues, “The flexibility of the system is very important to us as we are able to offer fast turn-round ‘design to production’ box supply. This bespoke requirement is increasingly in demand for smaller quantities of specialist meats, ‘designer’ gins, fish and it is an area where we have a market lead. “The Kawasaki robot is proving to be a reliable and very straight-forward piece of equipment with the added benefit that customers visiting our new site see a clear statement of our commitment to continual improvement.” Used in the Heathpak palletising system, the CP Series robot works well within its capacity of payload, 180Kgs, speed of operation and large work envelope of 1,800 mm by 1,600 mm and height 2,200 mm. A new generation design recently introduced, the CP Series has green credentials weighing 38% less than its predecessor and adding regenerative braking motors.

ngineered by Blackstar Handling Systems and centred around a Kawasaki robot, the palletiser is installed at the end of a converter line producing solidboard boxes. The installation is the latest stage of a £3m investment as it meets an unprecedented demand for quality red meats exported, from the UK and Ireland, to China and other fast developing economies. Lyndon Whitlock, Commercial Director, Heathpak Limited, explains, “We have a very structured approach to achieving lean productivity at Heathpak and having satisfied our lean objectives from the start of line, our new digital printer, through to the collater at the end of the converter line, we focused on the palletising operation. “We believe we are able to process solidboard through our system faster
88|
than any other converter. Before the palletiser, handling around 8 tons of paper per hour meant we had four operators over a single shift carrying out work that nobody really should be doing. Our objective for the palletiser was always to allow us to use these operators more effectively, improving skills to allow them to work on all processes of the business.” Flat boxes output by the converter are collated and strapped into bundles prior to being fed by roller conveyor into the palletiser system. Dependent on the palletising pattern, bundles of boxes are fed either singly or in pairs to the robot pick-up point. A 35TUKawasaki CP Series robotU35T, fitted with a servo driven gripper, picks up the bundles and palletises them in the programmed pattern. The gripper is also equipped with two vacuum gripper/pads which allow the robot to place a separator board
