Events 3D Systems to Spearhead 3D Printing in Medical Revolution at TCT Show + Personalize 2014 Chester, UK, June 20th, 2014: 3D Systems is a company that never shies away from the biggest issues in 3D printing, which is why TCT Show + Personalize is proud to announce the industry juggernaut will be tackling the red hot topic of 3D printing in the medical arena in the Day Three keynote session of the event.

August 2014 going to grow and 3D Systems, with the expertise of Medical Modeling, is a fantastic brand to give 3D printing in the medical sector a platform." This will be the 19th edition of the annual TCT Show, the UK's leading 3D printing, additive manufacturing and product development showcase and the calibre of the keynote speakers proves 2014's outing really is a 'must attend' event. The show runs for three days this year and features nearly 200 exhibitors and as many as 10,000 visitors from over 50 countries.

Leading this major presentation will be Andy Christensen, VicePresident of Personalized Surgery and Medical Devices at 3D Systems, whose company Medical Modeling was acquired by 3D Systems this year. Medical Modeling pioneered 3D printing-centric personalised surgery and patient-specific medical device solutions with FDA-cleared manufacturing processes that utilised Geomagic Freeform modelling software, haptic tools and advanced manufacturing stereolithography machines, among other technologies. Using 3D printing in this way is transforming how doctors are treating patients, particularly in the fields of reconstruction, orthotics and prosthetics. Under Andy Christensen's leadership, 3D Systems has consolidated all of its healthcare endeavours into a single unit creating the largest 3D printing-based personalised surgery. In 2014 alone, 3D Systems has been making major headlines thanks to the part its technology has played in bringing about real medical firsts, such as the Ekso-Suit, which was 3D-printed using 3D Systems' technology for paraplegic Amanda Boxtel; or Hammerhead Design & Development teaming up with 3D Systems' Quickparts to produce custom medical device trays. Christensen stated: "Over the past 15 years Medical Modeling has pioneered the field of personalised surgery using technology from 3D Systems. Anatomical modelling was the first application of additive manufacturing to medicine, taking CT scans and turning them into highly accurate 3D printed models. The next step has been the development of Virtual Surgical Planning, whereby a surgical plan is developed on the computer and brought to the operating room by 3D printing templates, models, guides and implants. "Now, as part of 3D Systems we are transitioning to a technology solution provider, which means we have more than one set of tools to meet our customers' needs, be they surgeons or medical device manufacturers. This is an exciting development for us and allows us to continue to grow our service business while helping others realise value through access to our collective expertise." Duncan Wood, COO of Rapid News Communications Group, which organises TCT Show + Personalize, said: "We are delighted to welcome Andy Christensen to the TCT stage to deliver his keynote presentation on the industry-shaping topic of additive manufacturing in the medical field. 3D printing is revolutionising healthcare, rebuilding livelihoods through the developments it has made in reconstructive surgery, right through to relieving common complaints like knee pain and shin splints with customised insoles. The potential for this technology is only

Rotork Site Services provide a River sluice gates are vitally important for of persistent rainfall, when swift and reliable operation can prevent serious disruption and damage to property. Alternatively, during periods of drought, sluice gates play an important role in maintaining the river level. The automation of a sluice gate is a relatively simple operation but there are many factors including the location of the gates and the availability of power which can turn the exercise into a multi-disciplined task. This was the situation facing Canford School, a co-educational boarding school on the banks of the River Stour in Dorset, when an upgrade was needed to the operation of three river sluice gates equipped with open mesh gearboxes, handwheels and counterbalancing weights attached to each gate by a lifting chain and open pulley. Manual operation of the gates took a long well as presenting a potential trapping risk to the operator. Changing weather patterns had health and safety viewpoint. Canford School selected Rotork’s Site Services Division to perform the project. Rotork’s proposal encompassed all aspects of the task, enabling them to organise the total supply of the work together with project management that the extended scope contract enables, by minimising the number of separate subcontractors that need to be employed. Central to the upgrade was the installation of three Rotork IQ electric valve actuators and a local control centre. However, being in a wooded environment some 60 metres distant from the nearest power supply, considerable extra work was also required, demanding a range of mechanical, electrical, civil engineering and project management skills. Following the completion of the work the time has been dramatically reduced, enabling the

20|

In the future there may be scope to further upgrade the operation by installing river level sensors, the signals from which would operate the actuators fully automatically.

5-axis robot for bank vault storage Cash trays positioned with high accuracy

The high levels of security required to handle banknotes and cash in bank vaults calls for fully automated systems. A new 5-axis rail-mounted robot meets these needs by handling cash trays with high precision. The robot uses Lenze controllers, servo drives and geared motors which readily combine together to create a simple yet high-performing drive system. The robot can be seen in action in a short Y-ouTube video. The VEROX is a 5-axis robot designed for the Central Bank of Lebanon to handle trays of banknotes and cash weighing up to 50kg. It moves linearly on rails up to 30m and has a 2.5m vertical reach. Gripper arms reach out 1050mm to grasp the trays in left, central or right orientation. The trays can then be transported to a sto-rage location or to the bank access point. VEROX is already successfully in service and there is strong interest from other European banks. Using a Lenze drive system allowed easy integration and compact dimensions. A 3200 C DIN rail mounted controller connects by EtherCAT to servo drives of the Lenze 8400 TopLine series. These drives were developed by adding servo techno-logy to the 8400 frequency inverters with the advantages of economy and small si-ze. Geared servo motors with low backlash use synchronous motor technology with resolver feedback. Even with a horizontal speed of 1.5m/s, the Lenze system achieves positional accuracy of +/- 0.1mm. This same high level of accuracy is also achieved on the vertical and reach axes to ensure cash trays are delivered with precision. The VEROX robot is proven to give fully automatic tray handling in bank vaults and has high security features such as a vision system to recognise Lenze drive network allows high precision positioning for the 5-axes with easy integration from the matched drives and controllers. www.lenze.com

Single wire connection? PaSSive diStribution boxeS? FieldbuS? This question sparks intense discussions in the electrical departments of many companies.

Here Murrelektronik presents its approach to this question using Germany company Schuster Maschinenbau GmbH to illustrate it’s system consultancy service – CONNECTIVITY. Schuster has four main pillars: it produces vertical turning machines, impact cutting systems, automation solutions and custom machines. They deliver 35 machines and systems a year. The majority - about 30 machines - are vertical turning machines.

INTELLIGENT POWER CONTROL – MICO Safeguarding machine up-time The power supply is the heart of every control cabinet. Advanced power supply systems have to be protected in a consistent and targeted manner

MICO monitors currents: Select a maximum individual current value for each channel and MICO will monitor this value. When the value is within the appropriate range the LED will be solid green. MICO indicates when current is approaching the maximum load: When 90% of the selected current load is reached the LED will flash green.

MICO detects overload: In case of short circuits, or if the load current exceeds the selected value, MICO switches off the affected channel and the LED will flash red.

MICO provides flexibility: Every channel can be manually switched on or off by pressing the button. When this happens the LED will be red.

Blower engineered to operate at up to 180oC from ACI Engineered for working in high temperature environments of up to 180oC, the Air Control Industries ‘EP10AH’ industrial blower is suitable for many applications too trying for many alternative units. the bearings so unit longevity and low maintenance requirement is similar to those of the standard EP10. Low temperature rise is achieved by integrating a heat dissipation ‘spinner’ disk in a vented housing between the blower unit and impeller. This avoids the need for cooling water and all related supply and drainage problems.

The EP10 family of blowers has a low maintenance requirement because the blower head is cast and machined as a belt driven units, therefore resulting in much lower loads on all parts of the assembly. The single piece construction also guarantees correct alignment of the integrated precision spindle. The outcome is a with operating speeds up to 20,000 rpm and deliveries of 1200 CFM. Also contributing to the EP10’s durability are the specially engineered hybrid ceramic bearings that are sealed for life to Power rating options for ACI’s EP10AH hot air blower are: 5.5, 7.5, 11 and 15kW.

Man v Machine?

A Vision for Product Traceability

In the war of man v machine, the realm of code reading is turning into a hardfought battleground as technology advances on the capabilities of the human brain. Highly-complex visual data can now be included in high-speed machinereadable formats, such as 1D barcodes, 2D datamatrix codes and QR codes. Meanwhile, humans still rely, on old-fashioned alphanumeric letters and numbers to understand and convey information. On the other hand, the brain can ‘decode’ a wide variation in design and quality ‘common sense’ to verify the information. True, barcodes, data matrix and QR codes are designed with redundancy in mind, so that a certain amount of damage can be tolerated in a production environment. However, the codes are still in the binary form i.e. no print or some print, whether that print is a line, dot or a square. lettering shapes despite distortions; because we can also look at context and meaning e.g. ‘th0ught’ is recognisable. Automated systems need to use camerabased technologies to detect and inspect shapes and symbols by comparing them to a pre-determined shape or pattern.

SMART BATCHING CONTROL GETS SMARTER High mix quality, lower material costs and safer operation, now with mobile control: Cantech’s intelligent batching control systems keep delivering more for producers,

C

antech’s integrated batching/ blending control systems have long been recognised for consistently accurate control of each ingredient in a mix, largely achieved by dynamically compensating the target weight of critical and often expensive ingredients – eg pigments in coloured products, cement and additives in concrete – to the measured weight of the bulk constituents. This tight control of final mix quality and quantity benefits producers and their customers alike – not least because very tight control of critical ingredients often reduces the usage and hence cost of these expensive materials. Batching control system mimic Moreover detailed records of all batches/ loads produced are stored on disk with automatic transfer onto remote servers, in formats easily read into standard software eg Excel, allowing recall and analysis by technical and management staff, both on site and further afield in regional offices/ laboratories. Email alerts can be sent automatically to nominated personnel in response to exceptional events, eg material made outside expected limits (eg too hot/ cold), repeated plant faults etc, highlighting areas for preventative maintenance or items for replacement/improvement.

staff with safe, clean working conditions away from explosive atmospheres, dust, vibration, noise and traffic movements of a typical plant; and from centralising control of two separate processes – say a rail unloading operation and batching of hot asphalt – in one office which increases flexibility of staffing, using related Cantech control systems which are easily learned by several operators any of whom could run both plants when required.

batching of mixed concrete from a loading shovel on a readymix plant or forklift for blocks/precast operations, allowing one person to oversee the complete operation including filling of hoppers or transporting mixed concrete to the fabrication area, as well as the batching itself; or loading/ unloading materials into/out of storage bins, with the displayed contents of the bins allowing a driver to handle other matters on site until the bins next need attention.

This has been taken further forward by introducing wireless workstations (pictured), allowing operation of key sections of a process from the cabs of mobile plant such as forklifts and loading shovels. Wireless workstation in vehicle cab
