Three brilliant women crowned Young Woman Engineers of the Year Three outstanding female engineers have been recognised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for their professional achievements and the work they do encouraging other young people into engineering.

28-year-old senior hardware engineer Naomi Mitchison from Selex-ES has been named the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year, and will play an ambassadorial role for the profession in the forthcoming months.

20-year-old Jessica Bestwick, who works for Rolls Royce, was presented with the IET’s Mary George Prize for Engineering Society (WES) Award.

Recognising outstanding female engineers has never been so important after recent statistics from the IET’s Skills and Demand in Industry survey showed that women represent only 6% of the engineering workforce. Further IET research showed that only 1% of parents of girls were likely to encourage their daughters into engineering, compared to 11% for parents of boys.

Naomi said: “I’m really grateful to receive this award and it’s a real honour to be the IET’s Young Woman Engineer of the Year. PPMA and BARA Gear up for 2015 The British Automation and Robot Association (BARA) part of the PPMA Group gears up to address on-going issues on automation, lack of apprentices and the skills shortage in the wake of the tremendous success of the PPMA Show 2014.

Alstom cuts weeks off turbine testing time with Abb vAriAble-speed drive A major manufacturer of steam turbines has cut the time needed to change its test rig set-up from six weeks to a few hours following the installation of an ABB variable-speed drive (VSD).

Alstom Power of Rugby tests 1/10th scale steam turbine blades in a large pressure vessel. The vessel uses a compressed mixture of air and refrigerant gas to simulate steam and tests the components at low and high pressures.

Pacepacker teams up with local university Essex-based packing equipment designer and manufacturer Pacepacker Services Ltd has teamed up with Anglia Ruskin University to help secure the next generation of engineering needs of industry.

According to the Royal Academy of Engineering, the demand for graduate engineers exceeds demand across all sectors of the economy, with skilled engineering roles currently accounting for eight per cent of the UK’s workforce. Other sources suggest that the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) sectors will need 160,000 engineers, scientists and technicians each year by 2020. there will be a skills shortage of people who want to get into engineering,” comments Pacepacker’s Business Development Manager Paul Wilkinson. “Therefore it’s in everybody’s interest to show people from an early age that engineering doesn’t mean having to stand over a machine and that there are many

“The feedback we received was that everyone felt they got something from it,” says Paul. “After Christmas we will try and formalise our plans more. There are many opportunities and we look forward to working together in the future.”

These include a careers fair in February, potential student internships for particular projects and industrial placements for undergraduates as part of Anglia Ruskin’s engineering courses. Over the years, Anglia Ruskin has been involved in many research collaborations with local businesses, often helping to improve existing products or processes, and with such collaboration sometimes qualifying for grant funding, this is another area both organisations hope to explore going forward. “We are also getting involved with a STEM project with a college in Chelmsford as well to try and get involved with students at a younger age,” adds Paul.
