New floating caliper brake
with one-piece brake caliper KTR developed a floating caliper brake which is made of one single piece. The new XS series is optionally available with a hydraulic or electromechanical operating principle and can both be operated in an active and passive mode. The brakes are suitable for sub-zero applications with temperatures ranging down to -40 °C. The brake caliper of the new XS series combines the housing, spacer plate, and counter plate as one piece and is made of special LT nodular iron. This makes the floating caliper brakes suitable for sub-zero applications with temperatures ranging down to -40 °C. All other components such as pad retainers, pistons and guide pins are made of steel. The brake pads are made of “organic mixture” or “sinter metal” and can easily be replaced by one single person. Depending on the application’s preference and basic conditions, the XS brake can be
operated either hydraulically or electromechanically, with clamping forces up to 15 kN being generated in the passive design and 16.5 kN in the active design. The brakes are mounted to the respective machine each by two screws size M16. “Since the brake caliper of the new series is made of one piece, there are no more exposed contact surfaces“, Fabian Liekam, Product Manager for Brake Systems in KTR explains. “In doing so we improved the brake’s corrosion resistance. In addition, the one-piece design allowed us to
extend the guide pins and double the number of bushings, improving the brake’s floating operation and the efficiency of transmission of force from the caliper to the base plate. This makes the brake even stronger.“ The new floating caliper brakes series “XS” are intended for applications in the most demanding environmental conditions, both above or underground, onshore or offshore, and can be used both as service brakes, for high numbers of cycles, and as holding brakes. The brakes are selected and adapted in the “KTR Competence Centre for Brake Systems” located in Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock/East Westphalia. At this location KTR pool their activities for brakes under the umbrella of KTR Brake Systems GmbH. Apart from developing and producing brake systems, tests and functional testing of prototypes and serial products are performed here as well. As an example, tests are performed on a universal brake test bench for rotor and yaw brakes, a tension test bench, a vibrating table or a cryogenic temperature cooling chamber allowing for tests with ambient temperatures down to – 40 °C.`

Vapour – A Big Industrial Problem You Probably Didn’t Realise You Had By Christopher Roberts, Director, Versaperm (www.versaperm.com) Most people hardly give vapour permeability a second thought, which is a pity as it creates severe problems in almost every industry - costing UK industries several billion pounds a year! Problems range from equipment breakdown to spoiled foods and from electronics failure to poor print quality, buildings that fall down or leaking hydrocarbons. It has even caused missiles to fail and pizzas to go soggy. So, what is vapour permeability? It‘s the ability of a gas / vapour to “permeate” through any material or barrier, even those that keep liquids out. The vapours then condense back to a liquid on the other side where they become trapped and cause all of the problems above – and many more. You can’t prevent it happening - but you can usually reduce it to a level where it doesn’t cause a problem. What you need is to be able to measure this effect and choose materials, composite materials or product designs that are right for your specific application. An additional problem is that manufacturing processes themselves can change permeability by some 400%, especially when they involve bending, forming, joining, sealing or heating. Until thirty years ago permeability was measured by sealing a little cup of absorbent with the material, weighing it, waiting weeks or months then weighing it again to see how much vapour had accumulated. This takes time and money but is still widely used.
10|
However, a series of instrumental techniques have been developed which can quickly produce a precise measurement, sometimes in just 30 minutes. There are two ways to measure the permeability of a finished component or product. The most reliable is to include, a vapour source within the container which has a dry gas pumped around it. Any vapour that escapes is measured using a variety of techniques. The alternative involves passing the dry gas through the enclosure itself, but placing the component in a controlled chamber. Material samples are tested using a special enclosure. The right equipment can measure the permeability of either the finished component or a material sample– even if this is a coating. You can even measure the permeability of an edible film, in-situ, in a pizza (they to keep the base firm and the topping moist!). Testing and QCing materials and products is the only real solution and we can provide the equipment, lab tests or consultancy to help – but the right choice boosts efficiency, reduces failure, enhances printing, preserves content and extends both working and shelf lives. And that’s not bad for a solution to a problem you didn’t know you had! For more information e.mail info@versaperm.co.uk or visit www.versaperm.co.uk

SURVIVING A CRISIS – IT’S ALL IN THE PLANNING Knowing how your premises and your industrial plant & equipment will cope in a disaster from a fire, flooding, power loss or system breakdown is incredibly important. Here Russ Baker, UK Sales Director of the hire division at leading temperature control specialist ICS Cool Energy, sets out the five key steps that will help you survive a crisis. can often be found in a plant room or alongside the process machinery. In the event of a breakdown or replacement, how easy is it to remove or replace that piece of equipment? Make a note in your plan not only of the equipment required but also where it will be located - a designated slot in the car park, close to the building, may be all that’s needed. Wherever you chose, access points and any remedial works required should be identified in advance of any crisis.
1.
Conduct a site and operations audit. Understanding where the risks lie needs to cover all site operations and not just the big stuff. In an industrial setting, process temperature is paramount so chiller equipment should be high on the list. It’s crucial to understand where and why equipment is used as part of the auditing process.
required with your equipment supplier, as well as an activation plan. Check whether your supplier can activate your plan 24/7 – there’s no point having a contingency plan if they’re only available during standard office hours.
2. Keep a record. Make sure the audit information is recorded alongside any power or utility requirements, and that the information is easily available. Key personnel may be off site during a crisis so make sure others have the plans, hard copies kept on site and that other copies are stored in an off-site location because a central server may also be knocked out.
4. Carry out any remedial works. All chiller equipment requires electrical and mechanical connections, but this can be a major problem when you’re up against it and coping in a crisis. Remedial works can include simple solutions such as new pipework being installed or new power connections so the site is ready to accommodate emergency equipment that will get you back up and running quickly.
3. Putting a Plan B into place. With a site assessment complete, this is the basis for deciding what contingency equipment is
5. Consider access. What about access to the site itself. Consider where existing kit is located, for example large industrial chillers
12|
A contingency plan is an important part of any business strategy and therefore finding the right partner is essential. They can help guide companies through the site assessments, organise the remedial works and be at the other end of the phone 24/7 in the event of any breakdown or crisis. When downtime is not an option, it really does pay to be prepared. ICS Cool Energy offers a 24/7 nationwide service with stocks available for immediate delivery and dedicated on call engineers across the country. Güdel Keeps Heavy Duty Robots On Track The ever-expanding range of industrial robot applications has led to the development and introduction of new models from the worlds leading six axis robot manufacturers that can handle vast payloads of up to 1,300 kg. Although easily capable of manipulating these impressive weights, the horizontal reach of these robots, generally less than 4.0m, can still be a limiting factor in certain applications. Güdel Track Motion products have always been recognised as a robust and reliable method of extending the work envelope of robot systems, and the company’s latest TMF-5 linear track has been developed to provide this enhanced functionality to the new generation of heavy-duty robots. Güdel is the only company dedicated solely to auxiliary linear motion for robots and automation, and adding this new TMF module to its heavyduty range, further reinforces the company’s reputation as a valued partner to the world’s leading robot integrators. The TMF-5 is currently the only standard module available on the market that can move an articulated robot weighing over six tonnes, with a payload of 1300Kg, and sustain a static payload of over ten tonnes. Working as a fully integrated seventh axis for robots, the TMF-5 opens up new possibilities in a number of production processes. A range of adaptor plates, designed to suit the increasing number of heavy-duty robots now available, maximises the potential for integration with different manufacturers and their respective robot models.
With the capability to accommodate up to four independently driven carriages, multiple robots are able to share the same track if required, delivering the highest levels of utilisation and flexibility for heavyduty applications. The carriages used on the TMF track have been designed to handle the often-high dynamic loads of a moving robot, including those associated with emergency stop conditions. The use of hardened and ground helical racks, coupled with planetary gearboxes, deliver the highest levels of positional repeatability (+/-0.05mm) plus smooth and quiet operation. The TMF-5 is also available as an enclosed version to meet the demands of specific operating environments such as those found within a cleanroom. Available in lengths from 3m to 100m in 1m increments, the optimum track length can be specified for any

particular application. Another feature of the TMF track range is that the length can be extended, should this be required to increase flexibility or to future-proof existing installations. Güdel’s reputation for quality and engineering excellence is clearly evident in the design, the materials used and build standard of the TMF5 linear track, ensuring high uptimes and a long service life. From a maintenance perspective, the ability to adjust the guide-way rollers from the outside of the unit and the availability of an automatic lubrication system for the rack & pinion, will keep planned maintenance times to a minimum. Güdel’s linear track range can be found operating within the automotive, tyre, metal, rail, intra-logistics, pharmaceutical, renewable energy, wood and aerospace industries. Güdel not only provides sophisticated automation solutions but is a manufacturer of high-precision machine components including linear guide-ways, racks, pinions and drives. These high quality components are at the heart of all Güdel linear axes and gantry robots. Reich TOK Coupling Range Gets Top Marks in Testing Environments In the arduous operating conditions found with power transmission test benches, it is essential that the drive couplings used are able to withstand the wide range of operating conditions often associated with this environment and allow meaningful test data to be collated. The drive train components predominately evaluated on test benches include, but are not limited to, engines, gearboxes, transmission elements and consumable or wear parts. With such a variety of component types to be tested, each of which can have its own specific test criteria, it is also essential that the drive coupling can be closely matched to the application. Reich Kupplungen’s modular and design-oriented TOK system makes this possible by providing tailor made, yet cost effective couplings, suitable for a wide range of test bench applications. The TOK coupling system can be used in almost all test bench applications, and on engine test benches in particular. The broad range of flexible coupling elements, adaptive designs and connection shafts provides standard solutions for a wide variety of different tasks, complemented by specific customised designs upon request. The success of Reich Kupplungen couplings in the test bench arena can be attributed to the company’s D2C (Designed to Customer) philosophy which draws upon many years of experience in the design of couplings for engine, roller dynamometer and racing engine test benches. The extensive range of testing applications where the TOK coupling products are targeted include: Engine Testing in an R & D environment, Engine Testing for Durability – requiring on average continuous testing for periods of 5,000 hours in addition to other demanding duty cycles, Engine Testing on Road Simulation – with varying load parameters and Engine

temperatures ranging from -40°C to +100°C and cover a torque range from 75 to 70,000 Nm and easily handle rotational speeds up to 13,000 r.p.m.
The prime features of TOK couplings are their efficiency and flexibility. A multitude of rubber compounds, developed in-house by Reich, ensures that the rigidity of the coupling elements can be perfectly matched to numerous different applications. Bearings or integrated joints support the loads arising from the connection between the drive and output ends. Cardan shafts, constant velocity (CV) shafts and compact shafts are available as connections, which also compensate for axial, radial and angular misalignments. These backlash and maintenance free components are connectable to flywheels conforming to SAE J620 or to any other standard. TOK couplings are suited for use at

PIEZOELECTRIC OR STRAIN GAUGE TECHNOLOGY Which Force Sensor is the Right One For My Application?
When it comes to deciding which force sensor is the right one for your application, HBM – a market leader in the field of test and measurement has the answer in its free Piezoelectric or Strain Gauge Technology webinar, which takes place on June 30th at 9 a.m (G.M.T) When using strain gauges any elastic deformation of the measuring body is first converted to a change in strain gauge resistance, so that a Wheatstone bridge circuit electrical output signal can then be generated. By contrast the basis of the piezoelectric effect is that crystals under compressive loading generate an electric charge that is directly proportional to the force applied. This charge is then converted to a proportional output voltage with the aid of an amplifier. With many different sensing technologies and the endless variety of products available in the
26|
market, finding the right sensor for your application can often be a daunting task. With piezoelectric and strain gauge technology being two of the measuring principles most commonly used in force measurement technology, this webinar will explain the functional principle of both types of sensors and advise on what technology is more suitable to the task at hand. Looking at how force sensors and load cells actually work, this exciting new webinar weighs up some of the advantages associated with both technologies. This webinar will also look at the rise of piezoelectric sensor technology, successfully used in a variety of applications, such as medical, aerospace, nuclear instrumentation, and as a tilt sensor in consumer electronics, and discuss the inherent advantages which have resulted in the rise of this technology.
Presented by Thomas Kleckers, Product Manager of HBM Force Measurement Technology, this informative seminar has been designed to fit in with challenging time constraints, which can often make attending relevant training courses difficult. This webinar will take a maximum of one hour and can be easily accessed at a later date or simply used as a refresher course. As an added benefit, all registered participants will receive a link to the webinar, via email, after the presentation. All HBM webinars are free of charge. However, spaces are limited and are available n a first come, first served basis. Please reserve your space by booking at www.hbm.com/en/3157/webinars For further information, contact HBM on +44 (0) 20 8515 6000 or via email: info@uk.hbm.co.uk or visit the HBM website at www.hbm.com

One device with multiple options Economical stand-alone data loggers for easy cloud monitoring Thanks to the cloud, 24/7 monitoring of sensitive temperature and humidity readings is no longer complicated nor time-consuming. T&D Corporation, the Japanese pioneer of wireless data logging solutions, has established a convenient range of stand-alone devices to serve individual needs. The TR-7 series consists of three WiFi models (TR-7wf) and three wired LAN models (TR-7nw), which store measured data in T&D’s cloud. Each of the small and easy to fix data loggers attend to various measurement ranges: Depending on the sensor, they can capture temperatures ranging from -40 to +155°C and relative humidity from 0 to 99%. All devices can also connect via USB for setup and data download onto a computer when an internet connection is not available. If a disturbance should occur when the data loggers are in use, warning notifications can be sent via e-mail or the T&D ThermoWeb app, which is available for iOs and Android. If no WiFi access point is available for the TR7wf model, direct communication with ThermoWeb app-enabled mobile devices is possible. All models operate via battery power, USBBus or AC-adapter, and there is an additional PoE supply available for the TR-7nw models. Automatic upload and storage of current readings is taken care of on the WebStorage Service – T&D’s cloud, which offers users 20 MB of free storage per account. This allows for storage of, for example, about three years of recorded data when using 10 units of 2-channel (temperature and humidity) data loggers at a recording interval of 5 minutes, or storage of more than 7 months of recorded data using 50 units. Data can be accessed at any time from any place and can
28|
also be shared if required, with a read-only ID. To make it easy to view, data is neatly arranged in graphs and tables. Their high precision and wide range measurement facilities combined with their flexibility makes the TR-7 data loggers ideal for use in private, industrial or public areas. There are several fields of application for these economical stand-alone devices. They can be utilized, for example, in food processing and catering as well as in storage and conservation. In facilities management, they can support heating control and safeguard climatic conditions in locations such as hospitals, laboratories, museums and more.

More process data for less installation effort Wireless connection of measuring points with Liquiline CM44
Measured values are transmitted wirelessly by the Dataeagle to the PLC
In wastewater treatment plants, thorough monitoring of all relevant parameters is essential for effective treatment. However, due to the wide spread outdoor environment, building up a wired network of measuring points can be expensive and complicated.
30|
In a nutshell Installation of several measuring points at a wastewater treatment plant without wiring thanks to wireless data transmission. Challenges A wastewater treatment plant in Southern Germany wanted to improve process control. To obtain this, additional measurement values at different locations in the plant needed to be collected: • Sludge level at the final clarifier to determine the necessary frequency of sludge removal • online measurement of pH, turbidity, SAC and nitrate at the outlet to improve the outcoming water quality and to optimize treatment • SAC at denitrification
However, installation was not that simple. Some serious restrictions had to be considered: • No free wires/cables available at the measurement points for connecting the 0/4..20mA signal of the measuring points to the PLC • Installation of additional wires would be extremely expensive (digging up the ground) • For one location, installation of new wires was completely impossible (turning bridge at final clarifier) • At the PLC, too few 0/4..20mA Inputs for obtaining all values were available. Extra input modules would cause additional costs • Profibus DP was available
May 2017
Measuring points in detail
At the master station (left), data are received wirelessly and fed directly into the PLC by the Dataeagle Modem (right, at the top).
Our solution Sensors, assemblies and controllers were installed at the requested locations. Each Liquiline CM44 controller was equipped with Profibus DP and connected to the Dataeagle (Wireless Profibus DP modem) At the PLC, a Dataeagle modem converted the signals and supplied them into the Profibus DP network. The visualisation of these additional measurements was just a small programming effort at the customer’s scada system.
The results • Better process control with additional measurements values • No installation costs for connecting the measuring point to the PLC • Time savings: staff doesn’t need to visit each measuring point individually to read off measured values • Higher flexibility: further parameters can be added easily • Easy and fast installation and integration into the DCS/Scada system visualisation • Better monitoring: Status signals directly available in Scada system
• Secondary clarifier: Liquiline CM444 controller + Turbimax CUS71D sludge level sensor connected to Dataeagle Slave • Denitrification: Liquiline CM444 controller + Viomax CAS51D SAC sensor connected to Dataeagle Slave • Outlet 1: Liquiline CM444 controller + Orbisint CPS11D pH sensor + Viomax CAS51D COD sensor • Outlet 2: Liquiline CM444 controller + Turbimax CUS51D turbidity sensor + Viomax CAS51D nitrate sensor connected to Dataeagle Slave • PLC with Profibus DP: Dataeagle Master • All Liquilines/Sensors were installed with holder CYH112 and assembly and CYA112

FAST-ACTION EXTERNAL DOOR FROM STERTIL WITHSTANDS HIGH WINDS A FlexiEdge fast-action external door supplied by Stertil Door Products ensures safe access for pedestrians and wheeled vehicles in an area of high wind loading for Greencell Spalding. Established in 2000, Greencell is a member of the Westfalia Fruit Group and is a leading supplier of fruit and vegetables throughout the UK. A workforce of 100 operates from three separate locations – Dartford, Spalding and Paddock Wood – to service a growing number of customers including retail, government, food services, food processors and wholesalers. At the company’s Spalding plant, set in the heart of England’s vegetable garden, a Stertil FlexiEdge M2 fast-action door was specified to replace an existing external door that had reached the end of its working life. The FlexiEdge range comprises 16 models of many different types and styles including internal and external doors, all-weather doors, cleanroom and freezer/coldroom doors plus emergency exit doors incorporating breakthrough curtains. Standard models are available in widths up to 11 metres and heights of 5.5 metres whilst bespoke and special sizes may be specified. Also, the range provides standard travel speeds up to 2.7 metres per second (opening) and 1.2 metres per second (closing) to shorten work cycles and increase productivity. The door curtain is fully flexible with a soft bottom edge which not only selfadjusts to seal on an uneven floor but also avoids any possibility of causing injury to users. In addition, the incorporation of an infra-red photocell, fitted 300mm above floor level, supported by a bottom edge wireless detector ensures instant halting of all door movement in the event of sensing an obstruction of any kind. Also, the flexible soft-edge curtain provides maximum resistance to damage caused by a vehicle collision. If the door edges are
knocked out by the collision, they are automatically re-inserted in the side guides as the door opens. A wide range of activation systems allows maximum versatility of FlexiEdge doors in many different applications. Alternatives to the standard push button pads include wired and wireless pull cords, key switches, induction loops, photocells, radar, radio or infra-red transmitters, presence detectors and touchless hand-wave detectors. Depending on the particular requirements of individual applications, the most appropriate activation method may be specified to ensure that the doors may be used intensively, minimising ‘open time’ and meeting the needs of the busiest high traffic areas. At Greencell Spalding, rapid opening and closing of the FlexiEdge door is activated by overhead sensors installed both inside and outside although pedestrians can opt to use the adjacent push button control panel. Apart from pedestrians, the door is used by personnel driving a range of forklifts and pedestrian operated pallet trucks. By minimising the time that the doors are open during these procedures, internal temperatures are maintained and expensive energy consumption is avoided. Due to the exposed nature of the Greencell Spalding plant, the Stertil FlexiEdge door has to cope with adverse weather conditions including unusually high wind loadings. However, the incorporation of top quality materials including galvanised steel for structural strength allied to reinforced polyethylene side guides ensures that the door’s performance and reliability is not compromised. Furthermore, the door curtains, which have been developed to offer flexibility and durability, incorporate no rigid elements. A hi-tech manufacturing process involves the insertion of reinforced polyester within a PVC sandwich to produce a high strength yet lightweight door curtain. “Our FlexiEdge door has performed extremely well in a busy and demanding environment,” says Vernon Harris, warehouse manager at Greencell Spalding. “This is vital when you’re dealing with fresh produce and can’t afford to be let down by equipment failures. One of our staff members had previous experience of Stertil products and recommended that we look at the FlexiEdge doors. I’m very glad we did – the door is excellent and the service support is first class.”

Rheology system from Linkam Linkam microscope stages measure specific physical properties while the user can observe and simultaneously collect images of their materials providing a wealth of bonus information. The CSS450 optical shearing system allows structural dynamics of complex fluids to be directly observed via standard optical microscope while they are under precisely controlled temperature and various shear modes. Using the optical shearing cell pictured above, it is possible to study the microstructure evolution of complex fluids in great detail for many physical processes. These include coarsening of binary fluids during their phase separations; flow-induced mixing and de-mixing of polymer blends; defects dynamics of liquid crystals; It is then possible to correlate micro structural dynamics with rheological data for gaining insight into rheology of complex fluids. The CSS450 uses two highly polished quartz plates that are parallel to within 2 µm. Each plate is in thermal contact with an independently controlled pure silver heater utilising platinum resistors sensitive to 0.1 °C. The bottom plate, on which the sample is placed, operates in either oscillatory, steady or step shear modes programmed within a motor control spread
50|
sheet. To facilitate various textures or particle sizes in different samples, the gap be-tween the two plates can be precisely set from 5 to 2500 µm, the speed of this change in gap setting can also be varied. The CSS450 can be modified to be used with X-Ray techniques and also with a liquid nitrogen cooling option (Cryo CSS450) further extending the temperature range to -50 °C which has enabled work on the effects of shear on ice crystals. Complementing the CSS450 are a number of different stages measuring different physical properties as a function of changing temperature. These include the new optical differential scanning calorimeter, DSC450, and the tensile stage, TST350. Common usage includes investigation, selection, comparison and end-use performance evaluation of materials in research, quality control and production applications. Properties measured using DSC techniques include glass transitions, phase changes, melting points, crystallisation and degradation temperatures while the TST provides mechanical measurements under tension and compression. KNF introduces the new FL 10 diaphragm pump with linear drive for OEM customers. With a nominal liquid flow rate of 100ml/min, the FL 10 features bi-directional flowtightness, IP 65 protection, a long and maintenance-free lifetime, and other cost-saving attributes.
FL10
new liquid transfer pump
The FL 10 pump is flow-tight in both directions in off-mode, making additional valves superfluous, thus saving on costs. The linear drive FL10 has sealing between the pump housing and the drive ensuring fail-safe operation, so liquid is kept away from other areas of the system. IP65 protection suitable for operation in demanding conditions such as wet or dusty areas. KNF’s well-proven diaphragm technology, makes handling sensitive fluids easier and safer. There is no pollution by abrasives, unlike gear pumps. Chemically aggressive fluids are handled by using different materials in line with customer requirements. In contrast to peristaltic pumps, the FL 10 does not require tubes to be exchanged. This results in maintenance-free pumps over the whole lifetime of at least 10,000 hours. The pump delivers 100ml/min against atmospheric pressure and can be operated up to 0.5 bar. 52|

Fast results for oil tan delta Megger’s new OTD test set, which measures dissipation factor (Tan Delta) of insulating oils and fluids has been designed for increasing productivity in oil test facilities.
facilities where time is at a premium.
With features that include induction heating and forced cooling for the oil sample, and an oil drain to allow the test vessel to be emptied in situ, the OTD has been designed from the outset to deliver accurate and dependable results in the minimum time possible.
It can measure dissipation factor in the range 1 x 10-6 to 4 with high accuracy, and also offers facilities for measuring DC specific resistivity from 2.5 MΩm to 100 TΩm, as well as relative permittivity from 1 to 30.
This makes it an ideal choice for use in busy laboratories and mobile test
Featuring a bright 3.5-inch colour display, a simple keypad and an intuitive user interface, Megger’s new OTD test set is easy and convenient to use.
The test voltage range is 500 V to 2,000 V AC and 125 V to 500 V DC. The quasi-square wave required for IEC 61620 is fixed at 100 V.
Thanks to the integrated high precision test cell induction heater and efficient forced cooling system, the time required to carry out tests is kept to a minimum. The instrument has a temperature measuring range of 10 to 110 ºC, with an accuracy of ± 1 ºC. As with all Megger instruments, the new OTD test sets have been designed with user safety firmly in mind. They incorporate dual redundant high voltage cut-off circuitry, and tests can be terminated at any time by pressing any key on the keypad, which will instantly shut down the high voltage supply. To further aid productivity and user convenience, OTD test sets are supplied with sixteen standard test sequences pre-installed. The instrument can also store up to 6 additional user-defined custom test sequences. Test results are identified by asset ID, which is entered via the instrument’s keypad, and are automatically time and date stamped. To facilitate the organisation, analysis and archiving of test results, a copy of PowerDB Lite, Megger’s powerful and versatile asset and data management software, is bundled with the instruments at no extra cost. Megger OTD oil dissipation factor test sets include an internal printer, which provides a permanent record of results in the form of an ink-based printout that is unaffected by heat.

ENGINEERING PDATE
Kirsten Bodley – Engineering Update Interview
Q A
Hi Kirsten, thank you for taking the time out to speak with me today. Not long now until the 4th annual NWED (23rd June) We have been lucky enough to cover the day in previous years. What should our readers look out for that day? With the success of the event over the past three years, this year the event seeks to celebrate the achievements of women in engineering and inspire younger generations by going global. This year, therefore, will be the first International Women in Engineering Day (INWED17), coordinated by the Women’s Engineering Society under the patronage of UNESCO. INWED is the UK’s largest such women in engineering initiative, consisting of hundreds of events and activities, from talks, tours, open days and debates to competitions, networking events, site visits, videos and campaigns – more than 550 last year. Through partnership with The Daily Telegraph, INWED also highlights the achievements of inspiring younger women through the ‘Top 50 Women in Engineering under 35’ list announced on 23 June 2017.
58|
May 2017
With the support of UNESCO, and as international events have already been included in previous years’ programmes, INWED has the potential to spread far and wide to many other countries. Working in partnership with many of the engineering world’s globally recognised names, we seek to foster a spirit of cooperation, collaboration and enthusiasm to celebrate the role of women in engineering, to highlight positive role models, and to inspire future and current generations to achieve their potential.
Q A
A
WES will support this through the 100for100 programme will be a key activity of WES2019. This follows on from the 90for90 – 90 inspirational women for WES 90th anniversary.
As an industry some fear we are heading into testing times over the next few years. What can we do as an industry to encourage more women to remain in the engineering sector following a career break?
This is a programme of engineering employer collaboration bringing together 100 partners who share our vision for a more diverse engineering workforce. We are now looking for interested and ambitious partners to become part of this elite group of 100. There are three elements to this programme:
Returnships is a top priority in the engineering sectors and engineering companies, including many of WES’ partners, are attempting to readdress the gender diversity balance. Although it is very much on their agendas, many employers are unsure of what actions to take and this is reflected in the low number of engineering employers offering returnship programmes.
1.
A big step would be for employers to be clear that they welcome those that have had a career break and offer support once back at work including mentoring. Being clear that they also offer flexible working is important. A further step would be to also consider how women can use their skills by transferring from other engineering sectors.
Q
I really enjoyed the launch of the 90 for 90 campaign. This was great way of letting people know about influential women engineers of the past and present. are there any plans coming up soon for our readers to keep an eye out for?
Recognition in the form of Awards to 100 Companies – for actions and impact in the area of gender diversity in engineering, applied sciences and technology
2. Knowledge Share – through identifying the actions that work, WES will be able to create a library of 100 examples of good practice that could be emulated by others
I have spoken to lots of engineering companies who genuinely want to take positive action, but who are not sure where to start. One of the key issues is that recruiters often hesitate to put those that have been on a career break forward as a “gap” on a CV is frowned upon; employers also see this as a loss of skills. In addition, women that have been on a career break, especially if it is over 6 months, lose confidence and often do not apply for roles or apply for roles that are below their skills level. Finally, engineering companies are not perceived to offer flexible working, which is often needed by women who bear most of the caring responsibilities outside work.
WES has its centenary in 2019, which is a wonderful opportunity to raise the profile of women in engineering and support a transformation in gender diversity in the sector. The Centenary Challenge is 30 by 30 so that 30% of engineers are female. This aligns with other partners’ aims.
3. Pledges for Future Change – with the Award comes the responsibility to promise 100 further steps to further diversity and inclusion. This may include projects with WES. Please contact us to hear more about this exciting programme! Please email info@wes.org.uk or telephone 01438 765506.
Q A
We are nearing a 100 years of WES and what a great century it has been. What does the future hold for not only WES but the female engineers of tomorrow? WES2019 will be about telling compelling stories from our past to share our legacy; to celebrate our achievements as a society, as women engineers and as partners; and to shape our future by leading transformation. There is still a lot of work to be done and WES will continue to increase its reach, encourage more women in engineering and to return to engineering, and support more women into leadership positions. As I mentioned earlier, working with partners, we are challenging the engineering sector to achieve 30 by 30 and we would be really pleased for partners to join us in this!

Q A
The UK is made up predominantly of SME’s. How important are they to the future of the UK Economy? As most companies in the UK are SME status, is seems strange to me that there is not more engagement with them from policy makers, the government seems to focus on OEM’s and bigger business, and is missing that the next capacity leap for the UK will come from engaging and supporting SME’s. Industry 4.0 is the next industrial revolution, and there needs to be more focus in including SME’s in the discussion. From productivity improvements and automation can come increased outputs and this can lead to growth from all business, we need to make sure that business in the UK is ready for the next stage of revolution.
Q A
business in general. New funding and a resurgence in the main infrastructure of this country, from making our own steel, to road and rail improvements, right through to high speed broadband roll out are all things that can keep us competitive.
As we all know there will be big changes happening over the next few years here in the UK, what can we do to maintain our prominent position within the global manufacturing industry? We need to make sure that the UK is ready for the Brexit road ahead, this includes strengthening our position in the wider world market. A good start has been made by the announcement of the industrial strategy, this as the name suggests is a commitment by the government to increase awareness and indeed support for manufacturing and
The made in Britain brand respects high regard from around the world and this is something that we can optimise and maximise on, we can look to other markets rather than just the EU and this will lead to globalisation and a better understanding of where we stand on the world stage.
Q A
Thanks again Chris for your time today, final questions. After such a successful half century what can we expect from Salop over the next 50 years? Salop Design continue to invest and support the region, we are ready for the coming years, and look to the future with optimism. Manufacturing is a great sector and there are real opportunities for ongoing careers, and we need to make sure that the next generation of engineers are fully informed and enthused to make a decision on their futures. There will be new ways of working, new processes and exciting developments that will need a resolve and bravery to tackle, and as always Salop Design will be ready to be at the fore front of these exciting times.

FAST, FLEXIBLE SERVOTUBE MOTORS WITH BEST- IN CLASS SPEED AND REPEATABILITY Developing Tubular Linear Motors that allow machines to operate at increasingly higher speeds whilst maintaining pinpoint precision, using considerably less energy and with low noise and minimal maintenance is an important focus for motion control specialists DUNKERMOTOREN. Their new ServoTube XTA25 and XTBA25 options are good examples of their close working relationships with customers with the objectives of improving processes, cutting energy costs and ultimately helping them to increase profitability.
66|
These new ServoTube motors are designed to provide optimal solutions for linear movement, increasing the peak performance of a standard product line by between 10 and 18% (force and speed) when compared to the standard STA25 and STB25 ServoTube range. They provide a performance that is faster than a ballscrew with the clean reliability of a tubular linear motor and also are a cost-effective alternative to air cylinders in applications requiring greater flexibility and control. The tubular linear motor incorporates an IP67 rated forcer and a sealed stainless steel thrust rod enclosing rare-earth magnets. The range comprises 16 models which deliver a continuous force range of 51~118 N with peak forces up to 860 N and linear speeds up to 11m/s. XTA and XTB models have been designed to produce maximum peak forces and speeds compared to the STA models producing a lower, but more even force. SEEPEX pumps reduce operating costs for Thames Water Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and sewage treatment company, providing wastewater services to 15 million customers through 305 sewage treatment works. SEEPEX have been working with Thames Water to deliver process improvements at their Sewage Treatment Works (STW) in Reading. SEEPEX progressive cavity pumps (PCPs) have reduced onward sludge transport costs, as well as the operating costs associated with piston pumps. Thames Water replaced the piston pumps, which transferred de-watered digested sludge from the energy generation plant to storage silos, with SEEPEX PCPs. Thames engineers identified that if they increased the ds content of the dewatered sludge from 22% to 25% this would deliver a large saving in disposal costs. However they needed reliable pumps to transfer the dewatered sludge over 80metres, with a static head of 30m, without increasing system costs. The existing piston pumps were identified as a limitation, as they had frequent maintenance requirements and generated high operating pressures and running costs - using 31KW of power. This all added up to a high cost of ownership for Thames Water.
70|
In contrast SEEPEX supplied pumps to transfer the higher ds% sludge with a lower energy consumption and pressure rating, operating as the principle project manager, and working with Thames Water approved contractors to deliver a turnkey installation. The SEEPEX open hopper PCPs deliver the higher ds% sludge with 50% reduced power consumption (15KW) and up to 75% reduced discharge pressure, enabling de-rating of pipework and valves to suit.
•
The pressure reduction has been achieved in 2 ways
+44 1935 472376 sales.uk@seepex.com www.seepex.com
•
PCPs have a low pulsation action, which generates a lower in-pipe pressure than piston pumps
A boundary layer injection system reduces friction losses in the 80m length of pipework, using a polymer injection pump linked to discharge pressure, controlled by a SEEPEX control system.
The pumps have been installed for over 18 months, requiring no maintenance interventions in this time. The SEEPEX system has delivered a hat-trick of cost reductions: lower sludge disposal costs, lower energy use and reduced maintenance costs.

Clif Bar & Company ensure coding and packaging accuracy with AutoCoding Systems For Clif Bar & Company brand integrity is everything. The private family and employee-owned company based in Emeryville, California produces organic foods and drinks, including their flagship product the CLIF BAR. When the company wanted to ensure all products leaving their factory were correctly coded and packaged, they chose a coding and packaging verification solution from AutoCoding Systems.
The new 275,000 square foot bakery in Twin Falls began production in May 2016 with 2 production lines with a 3rd line scheduled to be commissioned this year. All 3 lines will run a complete mix of 150 to 200 varieties of CLIF and CLIF Kid ZBar products. The solution had to be scalable to incorporate other packaging types and formats, as required. AutoCoding is utilised for date code deployment and package verification across the entire packaging operation. The AutoCoding product has been integrated with the following: •
• • • •
Apex Manufacturing Solutions Wonderware-based MES for Production Order launching and Line Control Markem-Imaje 9232/9450 Ink Jet Printers on Wrappers and Cartons Markem-Imaje 5200 Large Format Inkjet for Case Coding Markem-Imaje 2200P for Print & Apply for Pallet Labels Cognex 260Q barcode scanners for Package Verification
Data relating to the products and work orders is retrieved from the ERP system through Wonderware MES and stored in the central database. All date coding rules,
74|
equipment parameters, label layouts, allergens, barcode formats, product images etc. are also stored in the database. Setting up the packaging line to run a specific order is quick and easy with all the relevant information automatically deployed to the line devices at the start of the production run, with minimal human involvement. Not only can Clif be sure of error-free printer set-up, the changeover times are significantly reduced. Continuous inline scanning of the packaging using 1D and 2D barcode scanners verify that the packaging is not only correct for the product, but that the right artwork version is being used, where applicable. Staff can access the system from any web-enabled device, such as a laptop, smartphone or tablet, giving remote access to their production line activity. With comprehensive line reports and a 100% audit log, full traceability of all packaging line events is provided. Considering the overall project, Jeb Sloan, Senior Project Engineer, commented, “The team from AutoCoding Systems are creative solution providers with an appreciation for shop floor dynamics. The solution works seamlessly with our existing systems and adds an additional layer of security to our already robust processes.”

IO-Link by Murrelektronik
Easy to use MKV Metal and Impact67 IO-Link fieldbus modules take you directly to where you want to go. They are ideal for integrating IO-Link devices into installation solutions. The advantages: fast integration, brief commissioning times, yet maximum flexibility. The basic feature of this easy integration is ‘IODD On Board’, an innovative technology by Murrelektronik. The sensor and actuator parameter data stored in the IODD (IO Device Description) are directly incorporated into the GSDML files of the Murrelektronik MVK Metal and Impact67 fieldbus modules. If these devices, for example IO-Link sensors or valve terminals, are connected, you can access this stored data directly and very conveniently via your control software, with no need for manual parameter setting or special tools. This greatly simplifies matters, as to date every new IOLink device had to be integrated into the software individually, a time-consuming process. All of
78|
this is proof that it is best to store parameter data in the control. For series machines, this benefit can be multiplied because once created, configurations can be copied & pasted many times to other systems and machine controls. One particularly interesting aspect is that device parameterization can already be done on the computer in the office and no longer needs to be performed during machine commissioning on the shop floor. The parameter data is displayed in plain text (and not as HEX value) – this makes it easy to keep track of your data. This also facilitates the validation of machines and systems.
However, the freely configurable modules offer considerable time savings for nonstandard machinery as well. The auto-configuration mode makes speedy commissioning a reality, since setting parameters for digital inputs and outputs is eliminated, the channels do as the control system commands. In practical terms: The IODD of the new Emparro67 hybrid power supply unit from Murrelektronik makes it possible to parameterize the current values of the Mico channels and to exchange a variety of diagnostic data with the control – Murrelektronik’s IO-Link master and devices are easy to use.
Don’t think we can take the heat?
Think Again. The stable performance of the E3 Modulevel® displacer transmitter better protects downstream equipment because now it can handle up to 450 °C (425 °C for steam applications). E3 MODULEVEL linear variable differential transformer range spring technology is the straightforward choice for accurate, reliable liquid level measurement and control, even at extreme temperatures.

In applications where a fast response time on modulating service, in combination with a fast shutdown time (ESD), is required, the VBP also eliminates the need for an additional poppet or Quick Exhaust Valve to achieve the required closing speeds. This results in reduced material and labour costs and simplifies positioned set up and control. Amplification of any control logic can be achieved by incorporating the volume booster with our ‘AXIS’ and modular system solutions. The pneumatically balanced design minimises the impact of both downstream and upstream pressure variations allowing for improved control along with the block before bleed function.
