Poor pool capacity could hinder baby swimming boom, says research

Gyms wise up to potential of extreme challenges trend

The infant private swim school sector that has surged in the UK over the past decade is yet to reach its peak, although growth could yet be checked by a lack of pool capacity, a Swimming Teachers Association (STA) survey has found.

The growing popularity of extreme fitness challenges such as Iron Man events and triathlons has led to a raft of new training tie-ups, as health clubs scamper to offer their expertise and facilities to a booming market.

Despite recent Sport England figures showing that overall swimming participation saw an eight per cent drop over the last 12 months, the baby swimming market remains buoyant. Around 82 per cent of the swim schools which took part in the latest survey from awarding body STA said they had seen a “significant” rise over the last five years in the number of babies (youngsters aged two and under) they teach weekly. The survey, which drew 206 responses from schools which teach a combined 50,000 babies each week, was a follow up to research carried out in 2009, designed to measure the industry’s progress over the past five years. Almost 86 per cent of respondents said the baby swim market had not yet reached its peak, although many warned that growth could be capped because of pool time availability. More than half admitted that the increase in demand for lessons compared with pool time availability was a concern; while 58 per cent said the limited number of pools also gave them cause for concern. Just over one third (34 per cent) also cited a lack of adequately qualified teachers as a problem for their business, compared with 24 per cent five years ago. On a positive note, 60 new swim schools are reported to have opened since the last survey, a growth of more than 27 per cent in five years, and almost 70 per cent of all respondents said they had a waiting list for baby swimming classes. “The landscape has changed dramatically since we conducted our first survey five years ago, but this survey shows there is still a growing

Since then, the industry has seen Virgin Active announce an exclusive partnership with Tough Mudder, while low cost gym chain Xercise4Less has this week unveiled a new tie-up with Total Warrior. Holding six events in 2015, across Leeds, The Lake District and Edinburgh, each Total Warrior pushes participants to their limits across a brutal obstacle course challenge. The partnership sees Xercise4Less become the “official place to train” for people taking part in a Total Warrior event, and it will also urge its 200,000 strong membership base to take up the challenge. Various studies have shown that goal-specific motivation is key to engagement, so the move to encourage gym members to engage with the challenge appears to be a smart one. It comes at a time when several other high-profile gym chains are forensically examining what motivates members. Fitness First is currently in the middle of a and healthy demand for baby swim teaching and that can only be good news,” said STA head of accounts Zoe Cooper. “Parents clearly recognise that it is important for their babies to gain confidence in the water and by sending them to baby swim lessons, it means their youngsters are being properly prepared for more formal swimming lessons.”

discounted memberships rate to anyone who registers to take part in a Total Warrior event, as well as rolling out tailored “Warrior Training” at each site across the group. “When taking on an exercise regime, facing challenges and overcoming obstacles is all part of the journey, whether that is a physical challenge such as losing weight or a mental obstacle such as improving confidence,” said Xercise4Less COO Stuart Perrin. “Total Warrior understand this and live by the same ethos, making us the perfect match. Xercise4Less is all about bringing fitness and fun to everyone and what better way to do that than with an exciting course like Total Warrior”.

Town Sports Evaluates Sale Possibility, Switches Up Management Town Sports International Holdings Inc. (TSI), New York, is undergoing a review that could lead to the sale of the company, TSI announced today just prior to its 2014 earnings call. In addition, Robert Giardina, who had been CEO since 2010, has been appointed executive chairman of the board. Replacing him as CEO is Daniel Gallagher, who had been serving as president and COO, positions he has held since January 2014. Prior to that, Gallagher had been chief financial officer. The release noted that TSI’s board of directors is evaluating strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the company, and has retained Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. to assist it in the process. Giardina will work with Gallagher in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition and focus on

assisting the company with its strategic review. Thomas J. Galligan III, who has been the chairman of the board since March 2010, will remain on the board as the lead independent director.

our HVLP conversion process, our Board has also engaged Deutsche Bank to assist it in exploring strategic alternatives for TSI. The Board and I feel the time is right for a smooth leadership transition at the company.”

Giardina said: “This is an exciting time for Town Sports as we are transforming our business to align with the changing fitness industry and evolving customer preferences. We have made significant improvements to our operations that better position us for the future. We expect our high value, low price (HVLP) strategy to drive improved productivity of our club base and see many opportunities ahead for Town Sports to leverage the growing consumer interest in health and fitness. We are focused on maximizing shareholder value and, while we continue to implement

Giardina continued: “Dan Gallagher, with whom I have had the pleasure of working alongside for the past five years, has been instrumental in the development as well as the implementation of our HVLP strategy, which we have accelerated and expanded following its initial rollout. Dan is a proven leader, with an extensive financial background, including six years as CFO prior to assuming the role of COO at TSI. The board and I have great confidence in Dan’s ability to lead our business forward and I am delighted to announce his appointment as CEO.”

Massage therapy has many benefits Ancient Western and Eastern civilizations dating back as far as 3000 years discovered that massage and touch therapy have many health benefits. From being rendered a disreputable form of indulgence, massage is now seen as a holistic method of healing, which is practiced all over the world today. Benefits range from relieving migraines and stress relief to improving circulation and having the ability to rehabilitate physical functions. Tense muscles can cause the body to lose its natural balance. This can lead to pain as other muscles in the body tense to try to compensate for those which are causing the initial pain. It soon becomes a chain reaction, which causes the problem to spread, often quite far from the initial problem area. Experienced massage therapists will be able to locate the source of the problem and thus begin the healing process. This in turn may be able to assist a person with eliminating a dependence on pain medication. Massage therapy assists with releasing endorphins into the body,

which can help with pain relief. It is able to lessen depression and anxiety while improving the condition of the skin, which is the largest organ of the body. Those suffering from lower back pain are able to experience relief as well as a greater range of motion after a massage treatment. Massage has also been shown to assist with other conditions such as blood pressure control, immune system boosting, infant growth and sports-related injuries. Research has also shown that massage can be beneficial to autistic children, who seemed to display less erratic behaviour after a massage session. Office workers who make use of massage therapy tend to be more alert and display less stress than those who don`t. Patients who have undergone any form of abdominal surgery tend to heal quicker when making use of massage therapy. It also decreases itching, anxiety, pain, depression and tension in patients suffering from burns. Premature babies also benefit from massage therapy, as research has shown that infants who receive

massage therapy grow and develop faster than those who don`t. Those suffering from cancer were also reported to be less anxious after receiving massage therapy. It also increases lymph flow and stimulates weak muscles. It is also able to reduce cramps and swelling in the body. It is important that massage therapy be done by qualified therapists. It is also not recommended for people who suffer from open wounds, fractures, severe osteoporosis or blood clots. Pregnant women should also exercise caution with regards to massage therapy.

Make-Up Is In Our Make Up

Reputable West London makeup store, Precious about Makeup (PAM) was established by makeup artists for makeup artists, in 1996.

Launched by award winning TV & Film makeup and hair artists Jan Sewell and Kate Benton, PAM is the ultimate go-to location for professional makeup artist and prosumers. Kate and Jan both still work in the makeup industry, which keeps them up-to-date with the latest tips, tricks and products. This expertise is reflected at PAM, keeping product and team knowledge current and often one step ahead of the commercial beauty consumer market. The shop has become the must-go-to location for the TV, film, fashion and special effects industry. The idea of PAM was shaped when Kate and Jan decided they wanted to establish a friendly shop where, whatever your budget, you were always welcomed and valued. PAM

also prides itself on providing an exceptional and reliable delivery service, where sending out orders phoned in from the middle of nowhere by makeup artists stuck on location and in dire need of a makeup product urgently, is the norm. With all the team members being experienced, fully qualified makeup artists, PAM has become a chic hub, where make-up artists can come to learn and exchange ideas in an enjoyable, welcoming environment. This is where the PAM mantra ‘never stop learning’ originated from.

PAM are also the official stockists for Make Up For Ever, MUD, MaqPro, Ben Nye, JOICO, Fudge, and special FX brands Kryolan, Skin Illustrator, WM Creations, Glynn McKay to name but a few. Since opening, PAM has now doubled in size with new lines and new brands being added all the time. PAM also boasts a wide range of free in store tutorials from some of the best names in the makeup artistry.

PAM is the perfect place to learn from make-up experts and exchange ideas. But mostly, it’s a great place to shop. So why wait? Your make-up is waiting! Precious About Makeup, 6-7 Goldhawk Mews, London W12 8PA Tel: 020 8740 0808 www.preciousaboutmakeup.com

PAM Hosts Bloodymarvellous Throat Slashing Workshop Precious About Makeup (PAM) recently hosted a workshop with special effects expert, Claire Williams from Bloodymarvellous.

Providing an up close and personal demonstration, Claire shared with the audience, made up of makeup artists and prosumer, a slit throat effect using a premade sculpted silicone prosthetic piece. Key to the look was demonstrating how the piece was then attached to the models neck using prosaide, whilst a tube was carefully hidden under the silicone piece, so the Bloodymarvellous blood effect could then be realistically released. Bloodymarvellous are renowned in the industry for its ultra-realistic bloods, ideal for close HD shooting. The range has also become a must-have essential for makeup artists because it only uses food grade ingredients – so safe for use in the mouth, and its washable formula ensures it can be washed out from clothes and easily removed from furniture when used for props. “We’re always keen to host workshops that will appeal to our customers – this throat slashing demonstration as it enabled the audience to ask questions, see the effect, touch the product and really grill Claire and the Bloodymarvellous team about their range. It was the perfect workshop for the professional makeup artist looking to expand their SPX skills,” explained Alice Lennon, PAM sales and marketing executive.

Reducing Hypertension with Massage Therapy Clinicians have known that hypertension is a predictor for an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and myocardial infarction. To help reduce the prevalence of hypertension, there is a new recommendation to increase awareness of and treatment for patients with “pre-hypertension.” Pre-hypertension is defined as systolic blood pressure readings between 120–140 and diastolic readings between 80–90. Treating pre-hypertension may be one way to prevent hypertension and is the rationale for carrying out this study. This month, we present information about a clinical trial conducted through the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Iran and published in May 2013. Changing lifestyle and using nonpharmacological treatments for pre-hypertension is recommended by many clinicians. Within these non-pharmacological treatments, complementary and alternative therapies are commonly used with massage therapy being the most popular. There have been studies that indicate massage is effective in reducing blood pressure, but not necessarily over a long period of time. This study explored the sustainable effects of using massage therapy in the treatment of pre-hypertension. The study was a single-blind clinical trial that used a simple random sampling of pre-hypertensive women. Randomization to either the massage group or the relaxation without massage group was done by having the patients from a cardiovascular center choose a card from a box. On the cards was written either “control” or “test.” Inclusion criteria was two separate blood pressure measurements with the average reading of less than 140/90 and more than 120/80, no disease that affects blood pressure, no skin disorders in the massage area, no medication that affects blood pressure, no specific diet, no obesity and no stress or lack of relaxing techniques use. Demographic information indicated that there was no significant difference between the individuals in the test and control groups. There

were 25 individuals in each group. The control group relaxed without a massage in the same environment as those in the test group who received a massage. They laid on a bed with eyes closed and deep breathing with self-muscle relaxation techniques. Blood pressure was measured before and after each session as well as 72 hours after the test period. Both the test and the control group were asked not to change their life-style and diet, and measurements were done with calibrated equipment. The Swedish massage sessions were scheduled three times a week and lasted 10 to 15 minutes each using non-aromatic lotion on the face, neck, shoulders and upper chest of the individuals. Superficial and deep stroking was used in the massage protocol. There were a total of 10 sessions during which the subject’s blood pressure was checked by one of the researches before and after each intervention. Following the 10 sessions, the results showed that both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were lowered in the massage group immediately after the final session when compared to the control group. Additionally, there continued to be a significant difference between the test and control groups 72 hours after the finishing the study. The researchers acknowledge that their study has limitations that include the fact that the study subjects were only women and there were uncontrollable variables as the subjects dealt with daily incidents and stress. They also recommend that post intervention, different measurement timelines be explored, which would give a better sense of the sustainable effects of the massage on blood pressure. That said, the results of this study led to a shift in patient care practices to include massage as a suitable nonpharmacological intervention to manage pre-hypertension. U.S. Health Agencies May Officially Deem Coffee a Healthy Drink The U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, a group appointed by the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services to update official dietary guidelines every five years, is prepared for the first time to declare coffee as not unhealthy when consumed in moderation. In proposed guidelines submitted last week, the group went so far as to point out certain health benefits related to consuming three to five cups of coffee per day. The proposal will face public review before the guidelines are officially updated this year, but it marks the first time coffee has been addressed since the guidelines were introduced in 1980. The guidelines have no legal influence over the actions of food and beverage purveyors, but they are presented as authoritative advice on how consumers can maintain a nutritious diet as part of a healthy lifestyle. Often cited by marketers and media, they can have farreaching sway over the collective consciousness of consumers, as evidenced by this year’s heavy pushback from lobbyists representing the sweetened soda and meat industries.

PROTEIN FOR

BEAUTY Getting enough protein is crucial to maintaining a healthy body inside and out. We all know about how protein can help aid weight management/ loss, add muscle definition and help our bodies recover after a tough session at the gym. But did you know that its also vital to maintaining healthy nails, shiny hair and glowing skin? Rhiannon Lambert (first class BSc in Nutrition & Health and registered with the Association for Nutrition) is an Ambassador for Wheyhey protein ice cream. An avid foodie, Rhiannon has worked with Masterchef’s Gregg Wallace and has created recipes for amongst others, The Detox Kitchen and The Recovery Cafe. Rhiannon’s experience at fitness boutique Transition Zone has seen her work with Olympic athletes and witness the dramatic impact healthy eating can have on performance at the highest level. Here she tells us why what we eat is just as – if not more - important for our beauty regime than having the latest anti aging cream. The cells that make up your muscles, the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, nerves, brain and your sex glands are all made of protein. And so is your hair, nails, skin and eyes! Protein is made from amino acids – the building blocks for all cells – and is therefore crucial for tissue repair and for the construction replacement of worn-out or dead cells, with the skin cells being replaced every 24 days. Try giving food and fashion lifestyle bloggers Teddy & Alex a follow - http://teddyandalex.com Teddy & Alex are passionate foodies who love to create delicious healthy recipes. They’ve been working with Wheyhey, the protein ice cream, on creating incredible sugar free alternatives to some of our favorite dishes. Try these two out for size:

Clean Apple Crumble and Vanilla Wheyhey Ice Cream! Ingredients: • • • • • •

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 175 celsius. 2. Peel apples and chop them up in small pieces. Place the apples in a pot with a tiny squeeze of lemon juice to help keep their color and a dash of cinnamon and the stevia/xylitol. 3. Cook apples until they are almost broken down. 4. Place all ingredients for the crumble in a bowl and rub together with fingertips until a crumb like texture is achieved.

Wheyhey Vanilla IceCream 2 large bramley apples 12 tbs xylitol/stevia 1 tbs of water Squeeze of lemon juice Cinamon (optional)

Crumble:

• 2 tbs coconut flour • 1 tbs porridge/oats • 1 tbs of coconut oil (I use it straight from the fridge which gives it the same • consistency as butter)

5. Place apples in a few jam jars or a small tin and cover with the crumble mix. Place them in the oven for about 10 – 15 minutes until the crumble is crisp and a golden colour. 6. Remove from oven and serve with the amazing Wheyhey vanilla icecream. *Make sure not to overfill the jars as it bubbles and pushes all the crumb mixture out so leave about an inch space at the top.

Clean Peanut Butter Cookies Ingredients: • • • • •

Directions:

- Yum!

1 280g jar of Natural peanut butter 2 eggs 3 tbs stevia (or more depending on taste) 1 tbs of Vanilla Essence Any flavor WheyHey ice-cream

1. Preheat oven to 175 C. 2. Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl, it might look too runny but if you keep mixing you will get a cookie dough consistency. 3. Get some cookie dough into your hands and roll into a ball. Repeat this until all dough is rolled up. 4. Place the rolled balls on parchment paper or a non stick cookie pan.

5. With a fork press down slightly on the cookie ball horizontally and vertically to create a flatter shape. 6. Place in the oven for 12 - 14 minutes depending on size. 7. When finished take them out and let them cool on a wire rack. 8. Get a spoonful of WheyHey ice-cream and place it on a cookie, sandwich it with another cookie on top. 9. You can also package them in some cling film and store in a freezer if you want them at a later stage.

A Successful Trainer’s Advic

034 Fitness & Beauty Professional

Dreaming of going off on your own? Learn how to open a gym from a top personal trainer and successful gym owner. His advice will help you avoid the pitfalls...

Many personal trainers have a dream to open a gym. Maybe you’re sick of letting your boss or club owner drain your profits? Maybe you are in an unfair partnership with another trainer that isn’t pulling his or her weight? Or maybe something has changed in your life that you need more than what your current position provides. To make your dream come true, use these tips to accumulate a position of strength and then go get it! Tip 1 – Do Your Research and Put a Realistic Plan Together I hear personal trainers bitch about their current situation, saying the classic line, “Wait until I have my own gym, then I’m going to . . .” Further discussions reveal they’re stuck in fantasyland. When I first broke off from the box gym I was working at, one of my personal trainer friends told me he was looking to move on too. I asked him his plans and all he said was that he was going to buy the open lot down the road and start his own gym. The open lot down the road was listed at $650,000. All I could think was, did he just rob a bank or did he get a very large inheritance from a relative? So he’s going to buy a lot, build a gym, buy all the equipment, hire personal trainers, and just sit back and rack in the money? I tried to sell him a bridge in Brooklyn, but he couldn’t afford it. In reality it takes a huge amount of planning just to see if it’s possible to start your own gym. Do your research, get all the numbers together, and then put it down in a fitness center business plan. Make sure you have someone who knows business — and has operated a

business — go through the numbers and your plans with you.

If you’re going to be borrowing money from the bank they’ll insist on a written business plan and projections. You need to have a thick skin during this process and be prepared for some tough questions. Close your eyes and make believe you’re on the show “Shark Tank.” It’s all about money to the bank — they care very little about your dreams! Spend four to six months talking with other gym owners across the country. Most gym owners are very open to helping others and recounting the struggles they met in starting their businesses. Make at least 3 calls a week. Arrange a time to contact the owner and then put it on your schedule. Do not reschedule – they’re giving you their time and some excellent information. This is a listening session, so have a list of questions ready. Fight the urge to tell them all about your plans — just ask good questions and takes notes during these calls. Focus your questions on three areas: 1) Style of gym along with the number of clients and all sources of revenue generated. 2) Expenses and operating costs including employees and the management of those employees. 3) Hurdles in starting your own gym, or unforeseen problems that arose. Over time your questions can be more targeted to specific questions relating to your plans. After the first two months, you should only be talking to gym owners of the same style gym you’re planning to open. Your research and planning should include a complete budget. Your business will need the obvious things of equipment, marketing, and a location, but make sure to include items that most people don’t think about. Things such as insurance, accounting, attorney and cleaning services, and utilities can add up to be major costs. Use professional rates when doing your budget. Don’t fall into a trap that some people looking to start a gym fall into. Because their mother is an accountant and will be doing the books, they think the cost is zero – big

mistake. Budget in a professional to do your services; you’ll want to rely on the advice of a professional when making critical business decisions.

Tip 2 – Accumulate Wealth Before Making the Jump One of the biggest hurdles for most personal trainers who dream of opening their own gym is finances. The best way to save for your dream gym is to live by a budget and spend far less than your current income level. If that means no new clothes or shoes this month, then don’t buy anything. Bring in extra income from a different source if need be. Are you willing to mow lawns on Sunday afternoons to make your dream come true? Save at least 20% of your paycheck every month to accumulate the capital needed to open a gym. I suggest accumulating at least six months at your current salary amount before making a move. That’s besides the initial startup costs of opening your own facility. I personally lived in my parent’s basement for a year to save enough to make the jump. As far as gym start up costs are concerned, that will be determined by what your plans are. What style of training or style of gym you going to open? Starting up a small group fitness training location will be much cheaper than opening a 24-hour equipment based franchised gym. We’re talking tens of thousands versus hundreds of thousands of dollars. The larger the facility, the more equipment needed, and the more you need to accumulate before starting. The better location will cost you more too. And if you’re planning on hiring other trainers, that costs money too. Avoid borrowing large amounts of money. The interest rates might seem cheap now, but could you afford the payments if interest rates doubled? Many businesses fail shortly after an interest rate increase because they’re too heavily in debt. You should always be planning for the unexpected and have a source of cushion cash available to you — money in a separate account that you don’t use for month-to-month operating cash. Hopefully you’ll be successful in opening your own gym and can pay yourself a salary from week one. That savings account can now become your cushion

ce on How to Open a Gym

Fitness & Beauty Professional 035

cash in case of an unexpected event. And no, using it to buy the latest and greatest piece of equipment does not qualify as an unexpected event.

There are a few ways to accumulate or secure the capital needed in starting your own gym. You could save everything yourself; highly unlikely. You could partner with someone who could bring capital into the business. It might be another trainer or it might just be an investor who believes in you. Keep at least 51% of the ownership — never give away control of your destiny. A 50/50 partnership is a terrible idea — I made this mistake starting out. If you take on an investor make sure everything is documented in a legal contract. The most likely scenario will be a combination of your personal accumulated capital and a loan from a bank. Get ready to sign your life away to the bank and you might as well bend over right now. Although it will be a very scary situation for you, if your research and planning are done correctly, it will be based on accurate numbers and assumptions. Be sure to take the least amount of money as wages each month, and put any extra money toward paying back the bank loan ASAP. One of the greatest feelings in business is when you’re debt free. Tip 3 – Accumulate Clients Before Stepping Out on Your Own This is a huge topic on its own. Accumulating dedicated clients comes down to two things — relationships and branding. These have to be clients that will move with you regardless of the costs. In other words, if the client is locked into a contract at the box gym then they’ll be willing to pay that amount plus follow you and pay you. Timing is a big concern when dealing with your clients locked into contracts. Maybe you have a core group of clients coming up for renewal about the same time of the year. In you’re planning make sure you have considered this in your start up timing. Your entire operating budget (your projected numbers) should be based on the smallest amount of dedicated clients that you feel will follow you out the door. This isn’t the time for dreaming — be very conservative with your estimates and make your plans based on a limited number of clients. Estimate high on the cost side of the

equation and low on the income side. You can always rent a larger space if more clients sign up (find out how to get more clients) than expected, but you’ll be out of business quickly if you end up short of clients and income. It’s much easier to predict what your expenses are going to be then what your client numbers and income will be.

Your client numbers are really the most important aspect of you making a move. A big part of client numbers is going to be location. Very dedicated clients will travel a good distance to train with you, the majority of your clients will want to stay relatively close to where you’re currently training. Not to mention, all your past branding and marketing efforts were focused on a small circle of influence that had to do with your current location. Take advantage of this and find a location that will work for you within a 15-minute driving distance of your current location. Leasing a location will be one of your biggest decisions. Use a professional to negotiate the lease terms. Look for a location that gives you the best value for your money. This decision will be based on the style of gym you plan to open and should be one of the questions you discuss with owners during your research calls. Tip 4 – Accumulate Favors from Friends and Family No one cares more about you and your success than your close family and friends. Ask them beforehand if you were to go out on your own if they’d help you out as far as marketing was concerned. This is the time to call in favors and get other people to do your marketing for you. There’s nothing better than personal word of mouth advertising. Plan on how you’re going to use your social networks to bring in new clients (more on personal trainer marketing). Build in plans of spending a percentage of your time in your local community for “meet and greets.” The fitness industry is basically a location-based industry. You better know how to maximize your local community in building your business. You should be doing this now in your current position and branding yourself. A few of the things that helped us the most when we started was holding free

seminars about different topics that potential clients were interested in. We still hold a free monthly “Weight loss information meeting and combine it with our weight loss challenge” for the local public. We approached all the local youth sports programs and offered a short training session for free to their teams. This was great exposure for our bootcamps because the parents got to meet us. This also works for Boy Scouts and Girl Scout troops.

Use your imagination with this one very important rule in mind: use your free promotions for large crowds. You need to get a lot of exposure for every free hour you provide. No free one-hour consultations where you train one person at a time. Referrals are your lifeblood in this business. If your client numbers are growing in your current training position you should have a good feel for what it takes to build using referrals. But referrals won’t be the only thing you do. Your marketing plans should be included in your overall budget with a special amount included for your grand opening event. Include the first 6 months of marketing efforts in your plans. Don’t plan on spending a bunch of money for this — you can get a quick boost for your new gym with targeted marketing that creates the buzz you’ll need to get known within the local community. In conclusion Opening something on your own is a thrilling adventure, but at the same time it’s the scariest move you’ll ever make. Accumulate, accumulate, and then accumulate some more before you think about starting something on your own. If you do these things correctly then you will benefit from your future endeavor. Do them wrong and it will be the death of you.

The Beauty Of Business 038 Skin Care Fitness & Beauty Professional

Offering a complete service to clients/members is crucial in these competitive times. The links between health and beauty have long been recognised as a symbiotic relationship, choosing the right product range is essential to give lasting, effective results that will complement a healthy lifestyle.

Natural Progression

La Cure have a long standing reputation in the professional beauty industry as creators of supreme quality Dead Sea mineral skin care products for the face and body. They have now used their extensive experience to create Make Me, an innovative range of mud wraps and aromatherapy complexes that harness the natural healing qualities of Dead Sea minerals with effective essential oils and orange flower water essence to indulge the emotional and physical well-being. The mud wraps combine Dead Sea mud with a blend of essential oils that promote healing and increase cell vitality, balance the skin’s moisture levels, whilst strengthening bones and nails. Extensive testing has

also led to the rare, successful integration of Dead Sea salt into aromatherapy complexes, delivering the unique therapeutic and beautifying benefits as nature intended. These can be used in conjunction with the mud wraps or as standalone treatments. The versatility of the products makes them perfect for professional use and also effective additions to the beauty regime at home. The ranges contain no artificial fragrances or colouring agents and use only the best grade of essential and carrier oils. The unique regenerative properties of Dea Sea minerals ensure both the La Cure and Make Me ranges are suitable for all ages and skin types including dehydrated, sensitive, dry and prematurely aged.

Spotlight On... Revitalising Facial Oil The Perfect Hero Product

When looking for seasonal radiance boosters facial oils are a great addition to existing treatment routines. These offer far higher hydration levels than many aqueous based creams, making them the perfect solution for the dehydrating effects of harsh weather and central heating. Oils are lipophilic (they dissolve in lipids/fats) which allows them to penetrate the skin’s lipid barrier easier and faster than many creams. They are also by nature much more stable compounds which results in a higher amount of the active ingredients remaining intact and being absorbed deeper into the skin instead of broken up on the surface. This higher rate of absorption and hydration results in a more youthful, radiant looking skin from the very first application. Perfect for incorporating into a facial treatment, Revitalise Facial Oil contains a unique combination of active natural ingredients such as Dead Sea salt and essential oils (Ylang Ylang, Rosehip and Rose Oil) expertly blended with Orange Flower Water Essence to soothe the skin, invigorate the senses, lessen the signs of ageing and balance the emotions. All La Cure and Make Me products have been specifically formulated to give outstanding results and combining the products in treatments further enhances the effectiveness, giving a truly unique client experience.

Avalon Couches Proud to Be British Avalon Couches, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of treatment beds to Beauty, Spa, Aesthetic Clinics, Medi Spas and the Complementary Therapy sector, take pride in the fact that all their products are manufactured entirely in Britain. To produce their treatment beds, the Wiltshire based company use only the highest quality components and the most highly skilled manufacturing and assembly crafts and techniques. Steelwork for the frames is produced by specialist fabricators in nearby county Wiltshire. Assembling the frames, the electric motors and the fitting of the cushions is undertaken by experts in Andover where the company is based. Avalon manager, Debbie Pearson said: “We’re committed to the performance and reliability of our products. Customers who buy a bed from us can be assured they’re getting a product of the highest quality and at a great price. Because we’re confident that our prices are the most competitive we promise to match any like for like price. “The fact that all elements of our beds are crafted in the UK means that, in the unlikely event of any problems, we’re able to respond very quickly to supply spare parts, we never attempt to repair a broken part – we will only ever replace with a brand new component. Our customers suffer

less ‘down time’ when waiting for repairs or replacement parts, something other companies who use manufacturers from abroad can’t compete with.” Avalon now produce the new ‘Volupturest’, now widely known as the ‘boob hole’ bed which made its TV debut on a reality TV show. This unique bed has been designed with a removable section for clients with bigger, delicate or sensitive breasts to rest and be supported during treatments. Also included in Avalon’s range of luxury beds is the ‘MultiStyle’. All moving parts are elegantly encased within a sculpted fibreglass base, making the bed much easier to clean and providing extra free space underneath to give the therapist more legroom when seated ensuring both the client and the therapist enjoy maximum comfort. As well as aesthetic clinics, hotels, hospices and hospitals, Avalon supply bespoke couches to spas, beauticians and therapists. Avalon has adapted beds for the Harley Street Cancer Centre by altering the length of the rods that sit between the arm pad and face cradle, making it more comfortable for patients receiving treatment for breast cancer. All Avalon couches are available for immediate delivery from stock and carry a comprehensive three year guarantee. Avalon can supply beds to anywhere in the UK and overseas.

Ailesbury Hair Loss Clinics

Ailesbury Hair Loss Clinics is one of the leading training organisations for hair-restoration surgery. It was established seven years ago and has 57 franchises and partner clinics throughout the UK, India, Turkey and the UAE. Ailesbury Hair Clinic International Ltd was the only hair restoration clinic to have been asked to participate by The Parliamentary Review which has a foreword by the Rt Hon David Cameron.

Training doctors and safeguarding patients Aesthetic surgery of all kinds is too often taught poorly and lacks adequate follow‑up training or evaluation of surgical expertise and abilities. Too often we hear of cosmetic surgery disasters, and this could be dealt with easily and swiftly by establishing a much needed body of specialists within the field. The aesthetic-surgery field should be treated no differently from any other in terms of best practice, training standards and protocols. At Ailesbury, all our doctors, medical teams, franchises and partner clinics follow a very specific and well‑organised surgical protocol. Dr Patrick Treacy, our Medical Director, monitors live surgical procedures daily at all international clinics via a webcam, and this is extremely helpful in supervising newly trained medical staff. A staggering 52 clinics in India alone carry out our hair‑restoration technique. Richfeel Trichology is our Indian partner, and works closely with us in a highly structured way to monitor and appraise the medical teams carrying out the procedures. Close observation of medical teams performing surgery is vital for both good results and patient safety.

The successes of Ailesbury Hair Loss Clinics Having taken forward the traditional methods of hair-restoration surgery by using new technology, we established a hair-restoration surgical training programme for doctors and nurses. We believe that indepth, hands-on and well-monitored surgical training is necessary for any doctor to be able to learn and carry out a hair‑restoration surgical procedure to a high standard. At present it is not obligatory for a doctor to undergo any kind of hands‑on surgical training before performing procedures on the general public. We feel that this is a serious oversight on the part of the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which is responsible for granting practising rights. Unfortunately, the field of hair‑restoration surgery is notorious for unacceptable outcomes resulting from procedures being carried out by poorly‑trained, underachieving doctors.

The way forward from poor standards across the industry For standards within the field of hair‑restoration surgery to be raised it is necessary that the following occur: » Practitioners should work with the CQC to set up a body of specialists who will certify, monitor and accredit doctors and nurses. » Accreditation should be renewed annually and practitioners’ results monitored closely. » All accredited members should attend not less than two industry meetings annually. » Training institutions should also be accredited and monitored.

How we got there The success of Ailesbury Hair Loss Clinics has been based on best practice, tight protocols, surgical innovation and highlevel training of medical staff in a field, where training is, in general, of a very low standard and innovation is close to zero.

Stepping ahead – the Ailesbury hair loss product line We have developed our own line of specially-designed hair loss products for both men and women, which are now being sold on Amazon globally. These products will be rolled out internationally in 2015.

The future On a commercial level, we will continue to train doctors and nurses from all over the world at our training academy and establish new Ailesbury Hair Loss Clinics, franchises and partner clinics. On an industry level, we would like to push hard to monitor the hair‑restoration field by working with the CQC to train and closely monitor medical staff carrying out these procedures.

INCREDIBLE NEW LiteFLO – PUTS LASER AND IPL INTO THE DARK AGES Since launching the LiteFLO+, the only system on the market to use quadcapacitor technology, innovators High Profile Technologies Ltd haven’t looked back – literally.

Jake Hoyle, Technical Director of High Profile Technologies Ltd explains: “The Company has succeed because it’s always offered more powerful, focused equipment that gets the job done better than the competition - the new LiteFLO technology on these new IPL machines is no different to that formula.

Technologies Ltd are looking forward, less than an hour. Everyone is better off now – the business owners and the not backwards: clients.” Ryan Smith, Commercial Director at High Profile Technologies Ltd said: The Company is providing the “Obviously we still produce the full LiteFLO based machines with its range of InteliBrite devices, but the usual exemplary package of training, level of demand for this new FLO service contract, warranty support, technology has actually taken us by legal documentation and marketing assistance all included. surprise.

“Just about all orders for machines over the last two quarters have been for this new technology. This stop-start delivery is repeated until the whole of the area being treated has been covered.

The huge majority of the machines supplied by other companies in the UK using this technique have been traditionally, and remain, both underpowered and unreliable. This has always left clients with very hitand-miss results and a slow, painful treatment experience – it’s not uncommon to hear about some clients having had fifteen or more treatments without satisfactory results with these machines.

still pioneers of innovation and that business owners, and consumers, continue to demand the best, as well as embracing these kind of leaps forward.”

The key to the LiteFLO’s success is, as ever, in the advanced technology that the Company focuses on developing. These LiteFLO systems use four capacitors and a clever software system to ‘balance’ energy for a nonstop delivery. In treatment terms this means no stopping and starting – instead the handset is swiped across the client in a stripe, then moved to the next position and swiped again.

The Company explained that it’s possible for a salon to have the equipment installed, with this full package, for as little as £95 per week on a typical lease scheme, although further information can be obtained by contacting High Profile Technologies Ltd themselves directly. Ryan Smith added: “For business owners who not only want to generate solid profit, but also to offer clients something much more than the average treatment - the InteliBrite LiteFLO is the perfect thing for them. “Comprehensive packages and technology like this, and it’s not going to break the bank either – that’s before you’ve even considered that these new machines are now even cheaper than ever to run! “It’s easy to see where the demand is coming from.” It seems that High Profile Technologies Ltd is sticking to what it’s proven itself to be good at – introducing new technology that changes the industry for the better, at the same time it’s still making sure that it’s producing machines that are affordable to the many.

If you’re not one of the many businesses Jake Hoyle commented: “What we did already using this new technology, with the original InteliBrite by making then now might be the right time to it faster and more comfortable created jump on the bandwagon. CHEWTON GLENN LUXURY SPA

Fitness & Beauty Professional Spa Review 045

I am fortunate enough to have enjoyed a trip to Chewton Glen on a couple of occasions and each time I have had a wonderful experience. When a girl dreams of being transported to a place of luxury, pampering and indulgence this is the sort of destination to which her mind wanders. It really is the ultimate spa experience. Chewton Glen Hotel has incredible facilities, the food is second to none and the grounds splendid – all you would expect from a hotel with awards and accolades that place it as one of the best in the world.

The setting and, importantly, the staff are brilliant and treat you like a celebrity (probably because the helipad and price tag means that they are accustomed to the celebrities who grace the hotel!) The spa itself is very good value for money. My friend and I tried the Twilight Spa Evening experience for just £80 each. This allowed us unlimited access to the fabulous pool (pictured), the hydrotherapy pools (also pictured), the gym, the relaxation room, the steam room and sauna, as well as one treatment.

I opted for a manicure, while my friend had a haute couture facial. While the manicure was lovely I opted not to have a polish (included in the price) as I would have had to resist the pools for an hour – a sacrifice I wasn’t prepared to make! I was told the facial was “divine” and Wendy certainly was glowing and serene afterwards. The pools were quiet and calming, the main pool as you can see is simply stunning. The hydrotherapy pools have something for everyone subtle bubbly ones, to jets and pumps that massage muscles you didn’t even know existed! Wendy and I decided to be adventurous and, even though it was midwinter and snow lay on the ground, we ventured into the outdoor jacuzzi! It was exilarating to say the least!

One thing I noticed, which impressed me no end (I am germ enemy number one!) is that the spa is so clean. The steam room and sauna were enjoyable, but quite standard in comparison to the ‘wow’ factor of the other facilities. The relaxation room is a must; the twinkling LED lights recreating the night sky as your personal headset plays the music you choose... a perfect end to a perfect evening at the spa. Spa experiences start at £80 for a Twighlight Spa Evening like ours and go up to £220 for a Classic Chewton Glen Spa experience (£250 for a bridal programme) – but the experience is priceless www.chewtonglen.com

Athlete Lynsey Sharp’s day on a plate

The European 800m silver medallist, Lynsey Sharp, reveals what she eats in the lead up to competition season 8am Porridge with almond milk, plus raspberries, blueberries and honey. I’ve cut out most dairy (my coach and training partners are all keen on the Paleo diet), and I feel much better for it. 8.30am Dog walk before I go for training. 9.30am At the track I catch up with my physio then crack on with my running session, drinking water throughout. 11am Dried fruit and nuts, and Nakd bars, are always in my bag for hungry moments, and I make a shake with protein powder and fruit for an hour’s session of weightlifting in the gym. 12.30pm Lunch has to tick protein, carbs and veg – salmon with spinach and sweet potato usually does the trick. I need to keep my weight pretty constant until competition season starts. 2pm Chill out before another meeting with the

physio, then I go out on the bike for half an hour. A banana with almond butter when I get back. 7pm Dinner is pretty similar to lunch (boring, I know). Steak with veggies and potato or rice (I’ve given up pasta). A couple of squares of chocolate while watching television. Lynsey certainly ticks all the boxes for protein and veg, and for good fats, too, from her salmon and nuts. And like many of us following a Paleo diet she finds she feels better for it. To eat fully Paleo, oats, rice and potatoes would need to go. Lynsey could try steamed cauliflower puréed with butter – believe it or not, it’s a great mashed-potato substitute
