Xercise4Less members hit back at Watchdog criticism Hundreds of Xercise4Less members have come out in support of the low-cost gym chain after the company came in for criticism on last night’s edition of the BBC consumer rights show Watchdog. Gym users tweeted their support last night in the wake of a Watchdog investigation into cancellation procedures at some of the 32 Xercise4Less health clubs. The programme highlighted five cases where members’ cancellation orders hadn’t been processed, leading to direct debit payments continuing to be taken from their accounts. In one instance where a member had cancelled her direct debit payment, the outstanding amount was passed on to an asset recovery service. In a slightly less clear-cut case, one member was aggrieved to have signed up for a gym which hadn’t yet opened. Xercise4Less has apologised and refunded all of the members affected, adding that “human errors do, very occasionally, occur.” Meanwhile, the gym chain’s 250,000 UK members rallied round in support, with hundreds taking to Twitter to air their views on the programme’s findings. One member writing under the handle ‘cannyfella’ tweeted: “@Xercise4Less just watched @BBCWatchdog and what a load of rubbish, excellent service, excellent equipment, top notch advice all for £9.99” Another, Michael Heath, wrote: “@Xercise4Less is the best gym iv been to watchdog need to get a better story to talk about #bleedyellow #Getagrip” “We would like to thank everyone who has offered their support on our social media channels over the last 12 hours, we have been truly overwhelmed by the amount of positive comments,” Xercise4Less CEO Jon Wright told Health Club Management. “On behalf of Xercise4Less I can only apologise unreservedly to the very small number of members who have had difficulties cancelling their membership. These cases have now been resolved with full apologies and refunds. We have over 250,000 happy members paying from just £9.99 a month and we will continue to improve our services as we expand throughout the UK, making fitness accessible and affordable for all.”
New study seeking parkrunners to help dispel exercise myths Researchers at the University of Nottingham are recruiting thousands of parkrun participants to assess whether recreational running puts people at greater risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knee in later life. Recreational running has become one of the UK’s most popular pastimes and the parkrun organisation, which provides free weekly 5km running events around the world, has 800,000 members in the UK alone. Despite this, there is currently only a limited amount of research into the longterm health benefits of running, as well as the injury risks. The Health of Adults’ Longitudinal Observational (HALO) study is aiming to recruit at least one per cent of all parkrun participants across the 350 locations in the UK and a further 1,500 parkrunners in Australia. Over the next 15 years, researchers will follow the fortunes of the volunteer participants to assess whether recreational running puts people at greater risk of developing osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in later life. “One difficulty with research about physical activity and health is the lack of detailed data, especially running data, on large samples over many years,” said Dr Kim Edwards, who is leading the study. “For example, many individuals believe that running will have a detrimental effect on their knees, yet the balance of previous research suggests that this is not necessarily the case. However, these were small investigations and a large study is needed. “Additionally, in an ageing society, with increasing obesity and sedentary lifestyles, it is clear that a greater understanding in this area would be beneficial to the overall population.” The participants will be asked to complete a questionnaire about their age, height, physical activity, their running habits, hobbies and pets, general health and injuries, osteoarthritis, knee problems, pain and stiffness. With agreement, the researchers will then follow up with participants at 12 months and every two to five years subsequently until the end of the study in 2030. “It is really important that physical activity is encouraged within our society,” added University of Nottingham PhD student Richard Leech.
In a statement, ukactive executive director Steven Ward added: “Xercise4Less provide a crucial service to communities across the UK, helping individuals and families access physical activity services at a competitive price in trying economic times.
“Our research seeks to identify the short and long-term outcomes associated with recreational running. In doing so we wish to identify the benefits, particularly in relation to musculoskeletal health, so that people of all ages can participate safely.”
“Although ukactive is unable to comment on specific contractual matters relating to individual cases, from the information presented to us Xercise4Less is compliant with all requirements in this area.”
Anyone who is interested in taking part can contact Dr Kim Edwards in the University of Nottingham’s School of Medicine by email at: Kimberley.edwards@nottingham.ac.uk
‘Heart of the Lakes’ named as top sponsor at “ironman” event, TriathlonX Fitness & Beauty Professional Industry News 005
In a massive boost to equality in extreme sport, the first woman to finish TriathlonX in the Lake District will win a prize of £1000 – exactly the same as the men’s prize! The award is being made thanks to generous sponsorship from the Lake District’s longest standing cottage letting agency, Heart of the Lakes. The prizes will be given to the winners at next year’s event, which takes place on 25th June and is deemed the world’s most gruelling extreme iron-distance triathlon. Already attracting 200 entries from an international audience, it is the first extreme triathlon to offer a substantial cash prize. The event will have steeper ascents than any “ironman” triathlon anywhere in the world. Competitors will swim twice round Seamew Crag island in Windermere and cycle each Lake District pass on the route of the Fred Whitton challenge, approximately 112 miles. The final stage – the marathon run of 26 miles - will take the athletes to the top of Scafell Pike via Elterwater and Great Langdale. The total ascent on the cycle and run routes is 5,150m, the highest in the world, with a projected winning time of four hours longer than Norway’s Norseman extreme race. Triathlon X was staged this year at Wasdale, but is moving to a more central location next June, starting at Ambleside YHA at the head of Windermere. YHA (England and Wales) is supporting the event, and a percentage of all entry fees will be donated to the YHA bursary fund Breaks for Kids, which creates opportunities for disadvantaged young people to stay with YHA and undergo new, life-changing experiences.
Renowned for its on-going involvement in charitable and community initiatives, Heart of the Lakes is thrilled to be involved in such a top sporting event, as company partner, Chris Jackson, explains: “We are delighted to be involved in TriathlonX and want to make sure that the women who compete have a chance to win the same prize as the men. They are putting in the same effort, over the most gruelling course in the world. It will be amazing to see all these top athletes here in the heart of the Lake District.” Organiser Mark Blackburn said: “We are delighted to have Heart of the Lakes join us as a leading sponsor and believe that the prize money on offer is going to attract some of the world’s leading triathletes.” Leading triathlete, Marie Meldrum, from Lochaber in Scotland, was the female winner of the 2014 ‘Celtman’ event: “It is really encouraging to see women and men being offered the same prize money.” she said. “I’ve noticed recently that women have started to get more prominence in media coverage of these events. Women might not be as fast as the leading men, but they are covering the same distances.” Richard Greenwood, Cumbria Tourism’s head of operations, said:
“As the UK’s adventure capital, the Lake District has an adrenaline fuelled calendar of outdoor challenge events every year and this event is no exception. There are plenty of events for the first time competitor, and others for more experienced athletes that require total endurance and dedication. Hosting TriathlonX on Windermere will allow even more people to access this high level event and allow them to come and embrace their adventurous side, here in the Lake District.” For further details regarding TriathlonX, please visit www.triathlonx.co.uk or call Mark Blackburn on 07979 262784

Sport England to Disburse
£8.2M of Lottery Funding to Help Tackle
Sport England has announced that the latest tranche of National Lottery funding will see £8.2m put towards helping disadvantaged communities get active. More than 124,000 people will benefit from the scheme, which will use sport and physical activity to help tackle social problems affecting young people, women and ethnic minorities. “The 46 projects receiving National Lottery funding today all have compelling plans to use sport as a way of improving the lives of thousands of people,” said Sport England’s director of community sport, Mike Diaper. “We know that people who live challenging lives face the biggest barriers to getting active – this fund is about breaking the barriers down.” Designed to encourage sport for social good, the fund has relaxed its rules to enable less well-off communities to apply for funding. Normally, Sport England requires organisations to co-fund a proportion of their project, but where projects relate to areas of social disadvantage and the majority of the targeted participants live in the local authority ward, this condition can be waived. Since 2013, more than 200 projects have already received funding, helping to get 350,000 people active to date. Among the latest projects to receive backing is the Jason Roberts Foundation, which has received a £150,000 funding slice to continue its work changing traditional perceptions of sports such as golf, rugby and tennis being elitist.
Exercise is the ‘elixir of youth’ for brain function
New research from Japan looking at cognitive performance in older men has found that regular exercise can help the brain hold back the sands of time and perform in the same way as it did in years gone by. There have been long-held connections between physical and mental fitness, but to date, little has been known about how exercise impacts on brain function. However, a new study led by Dr Hideaki Soya from the University of Tsukuba in Japan – published in the latest volume of the journal NeuroImage – has shed light on the direct relationship between brain activity, brain function and physical fitness in a group of older Japanese men. The fitter men were shown to have far greater cognitive skills, with their brains defying ageing patterns to perform in the same way as those decades younger. In the study, 60 older men (aged 64-75 years) underwent an exercise test to measure their aerobic fitness. The men, whose physical fitness was found to vary widely, then performed a test to measure their selective attention, executive function and reaction time. Activity in the mens’ brains was measured throughout the test using a unique neuroimaging technique called functional near infrared spectroscopy or fNIRS. Based on their findings, the researchers found that fitter men tend to use the more youth-like side of their brains to carry out tasks. The researchers are now looking to explore whether the same patterns apply in the brains of older females. The findings serve to further underline the importance of exercise in relation to ageing. They follow findings from the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) that raising fitness levels in later life can boost brain function. The research indicated that the intensity of the exercise appeared to matter more than the duration, backing up previous conclusions.
Pop-Up Studio Concept to Bring Fitness to Empty Shop Spaces Fitness presenter Rachel Holmes is launching a new pop-up fitness concept which will see three week ‘Transformation Studios’ offer fitness, food and lifestyle advice in empty shopping spaces. The first ‘Kick Start Pop-Up Transformation Studio’ will launch in empty commercial space in Nottingham city centre from 2-21 November. The aim of the studio is to help local people transform their body, mind and eating habits, with plans to roll out the concept across the UK. The ‘Full Detox Package’ costs attendees £97 and gives them access to a timetable of 20 different classes including 90’s Club, several versions of Pilates, Self Defence and HIIT. There will also be a juice and blend workshop with juicing expert Mairi Taylor, plus motivational talks and support sessions. “The Kick Start Pop-Up Transformation Fitness Studio is an idea I have had for many years,” said Holmes, who is running the venture through her wellness company Kick Start Fat Loss.
“The studio will be an amazing base for me to run the full Kick Start Fat Loss Detox programme and a chance where I can work with clients personally every day.” Holmes is eager to ensure that attendance on the course leads to lasting lifestyle changes. After the three weeks, all members will have access to a full 11-month online programme of daily workouts, recipes, diet/meal plans, plus nutritional advice and support. Holmes will also continue to do her daily workouts via live video app Periscope, which alumni will also have access to.

Keeping People Moving
For generations pain in the hip has been considered an inevitable part of ageing, but in the last few years there has been a dramatic rise in number of hip operations. A number of factors are fuelling this rise. An ageing population, the active lifestyle revolution, people staying active later in life and improved diagnosis. But don’t be fooled into thinking hip problems are the preserve of the elderly. There has been a dramatic rise in the number of hip procedures in the young and active population. Termed hip preservation surgery it involves procedures for correcting hip dysfunction that preserves your hip joint avoiding the more commonly known total hip replacement surgery. It is common for this surgery to be keyhole with the aim of relieving pain, improving function and delaying or preventing the onset of osteoarthritis in the hip. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disorder of the joints caused by progressive loss of cartilage alongside other changes in the joint. OA of the hip occurs between and around the ball and socket of the hip joint and is the most common diagnosis for pain in the hip and unfortunately there is no cure for osteoarthritis. The hip joint is truly amazing and doing everything you can to maintain your joint for as long as possible without surgical intervention is advisable. The first line of treatment recommended to any one diagnosed with degenerative changes in the hip is exercise and manual therapy. Studies that have investigated the combination of manual therapy techniques (focusing on increasing capsular mobility of the hip) and therapeutic exercise have shown excellent results. The first and most widely used manual therapy technique to improve general hip joint capsular mobility and decrease pain is termed Long Axis Hip Traction. HipTrac is a device that replicates the manual therapy technique of long axis traction and can be used in the clinic setting or at home. The easy to use and portable design allows for regular therapy beyond the clinic in a place and a time that is convenient to you. HipTrac is also indicated for use with other hip conditions that cause pain at the hip and can be used as part of a rehabilitation process working with a manual therapist (physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath). Combining manual therapy with specific therapeutic exercises shows the greatest promise for conservative treatment of hip osteoarthritis. By increasing mobility and decreasing pain, you are better able to perform long-term exercise routines for decreasing weight, increasing flexibility, and increasing biomechanical strength. These conservative measures can decrease the need for medications, improve morale, improve functionality, and most of all, improve quality of life. The earlier you start conservative management of hip pain the better the long-term outcomes. So if you have any pain or niggle in the hips get it assessed by a manual therapist. Whether a potential patient of manual therapist for further information on HipTrac visit www.hiptrac.co.uk or contact HipTrac UK Limited on 0115 882 0733.

010 Shows & Events Fitness & Beauty Professional The Pool & Spa Expo is back; and whilst some annual events seem to come round quicker and quicker each year, this one actually has. In a few short weeks the UK Pool & Spa Expo will be back at the NEC on 22-24th November, a good four months ahead of the previous dateline. So why the change? Claire Saunders, Event Director explains, ‘With change comes progress, in order to move forward, stay abreast of what is best for the industry and break new ground, we must adapt. The new dates come into line with global events. It allows us to stand apart from any other show in the UK and is therefore perfectly placed for companies to showcase their newest products to the UK marketplace. Staying at The NEC was an obvious choice, with the rail, road and air transport links arriving right on site it makes it the ideal location for both domestic and international exhibitors and visitors and with the new Resorts World, the social scene opens up a whole new networking arena (not to mention a luxurious choice of hotels, bars and restaurants). What else is staying the same? Well Pool & Spa Scene remain the official media partner for the show. ‘The support we receive for the show from Christina and the girls at Pool & Spa Scene is fantastic’ says Lauren King, Sales & Marketing Manager for team UKPS. ‘Christina knows the industry inside out and her panel forum last year was an unmitigated success with visitors spilling out into the aisles to hear what the experts had to say, we look forward to seeing who is on the panel this year.’ The Pool & Spa Awards run by the magazine have also moved to be timed with the expo and will run on the second night of the event. Alongside the panel forum there will also be seminars on safety and energy efficiency as well as the opportunity to gain your Certified Pool Operators certificate at the on-site two day course. So what’s new? Aside from the date change, the event team have been working hard and getting the right balance of exhibitors into this year’s show. With rumblings about the event become a ‘spa show’ they have certainly captured that side of the market, so this time around special attention has been paid to the pool companies and how to make sure there is a good balance of each. Doughboy, Desjoyaux and Sundance will be leading this particular parade with a number of ancillary companies giving the support that will attract not only pool seekers, but also owners and upgraders. Jo Downs Glassware, Pool-dek by Stage Systems and The Brio Group are all newbies this year but many old favourites will also be returning. Free parking, free wifi and most importantly free tickets to the show, it is clear that UK Pool & Spa Expo are doing everything bring value to both visitors and exhibitors of the wet leisure industry and are excited about this latest strategy taking them forward to becoming the right choice for pool & spa professionals in the UK and around the world. www.ukpoolspa-expo.co.uk info@ukpoolspa-expo.co.uk +44 (0)1483 440 229

t’s common knowledge that athletic performance can decline with a very small amount of dehydration and losing two per cent of your body weight in fluid can decrease your performance by up to 25 per cent.
So whether you’re an elite athlete or an amateur enthusiast, drinking water during training or on race day is essential if you want to get the most out of your exercise.
While many athletes turn to sports drinks for re-hydration, it’s worth noting many are packed with sugar and hidden calories, which can hinder your overall training progress and achievement rather than aiding your long term sporting goals. But now there’s a new mineral-rich drink on the market, which will meet all your rehydration needs. blk. from North America is the first ever fulvicenhanced, all natural mineral water. Its striking black colouration is the result of Canadian spring water being infused with fulvic minerals. The water contains no colouring, dye or additives and is 100 per cent natural. HOW IT WORKS
Fulvic acid helps water enter cells at a faster rate, leading to balanced hydration and mineral levels. The unique balance of chelated minerals helps fulvic acid enter cells quickly and increases enzyme activity.
Consuming fulvic acid helps support proper biochemical reactions and optimises cell response, resulting in an improved performance. The Fulvic mineral complex of blk. provides some of the most powerful electrolytes known to man, making blk. the only choice for fast, effective rehydration on the go.
Unlike other health drinks on the market, blk. contains no carbohydrates, calories, sodium, sugars or caffeine. This all natural drink contains an incredible 77 trace minerals from boron, which aids concentration, through to zinc, iron and germanium, known for their immune system enhancing properties.
It’s as simple as 1-2-3. Soul is made from three main ingredients, Black Cumin Seed, Black Raspberry Seed and Chardonnay Grape Seed. All three ingredients are sources of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. The result: powerful phytosteroids, phospholipids and essential oils that help nourish and strengthen my skin tone, maintain balance and avoid today’s most pressing needs all in one 2 ounce pouch. CELLULAR ANTI-AGING ASSAY—Cellular Anti-aging Assay (SIRT1) measures the anti-aging ability of a material using SIRT1 production in human cells as a biomarker for anti-aging. SIRT1 is a protein that is believed to play important roles in longevity and reduction of age-related diseases. Previous studies have shown that when mammals age, SIRT1 expression decreases, while induction and activation of SIRT1 has been associated with extended lifespan. These studies have triggered the search for SIRT1 activators that may be used as dietary supplements to promote health and longevity. Brunswick Laboratories, Inc., a world leader in analytical solutions which helps companies like Johnson & Johnson, PepsiCo, Kraft Foods, and Campbell's to develop functional and nutritional products through testing, research and clinical studies has shown that Soul increases the stimulation of the anti-aging enzyme SIRT1 by 62% . My name is Jason Turner or “JTPT” and I have been a qualified PT for coming on 10 years now. My specialities are body conditioning and fitness coaching, I am 40 years old and I live and breath fitness.
Jason Turner
My journey in fitness started over 12 years ago, I was over weight drinking to much and generally unhappy with myself and my life. Then one day a friend said
wedowski
“ you need a hobby, come try the gym with me ” so I did, and for six months I hated it but kept on going. After a while I started to lose weight, build muscle and a nice frame, and the more results I saw the more I enjoyed it. I would see PTs in my local gym and remember saying to my friend
“ I could do that job, and
I could do it better ”
I guess after a while she had enough of hearing this and said to me then “prove it”. This gave me the encouragement I needed to contact my local college and enrol on a CYQ level 2 gym trainer qualification, and subsequently a level 3 PT qualification and have never looked back. For me, fitness and training is not just about the gym floor, we train outside in parks, on beaches and anywhere else we need to. I personally prefer to teach and train on smaller pieces of equipment such as Kettle Bells, TRX, Rings, Circuit Training, and Gymnastic style training, we mix this in with traditional weight training components and modern styles of CV training as well as boxing and fight training. I have a very healthy and growing PT business with two part time members of staff and a fully qualified Nutritionist, on top of this I also teach two Kettle Bell classes a week and boot camps. Myself and my staff are big fans of playing to a clients strengths and working to their goals, it’s got to be fun and something the client wants to do, and more importantly, works, or what’s the point! In fitness one size does not fit all, it’s an individual experience and that what you get when you train with JT PT and the team...so it doesn’t matter what you do or what your goals are, get your trainers on, dust off the push bike, get down to your local gym, pool, park, beach, or any other place you can think of and start keeping fit, and your machine that is your body will look after you, I promise. Stay fit guys and work hard. Check out www.jasonturnerpt.co.uk

The most important piece of equipment in your gym
A
ccess control, often an afterthought when setting out initial plans for a gym or fitness facility, but, looking towards the future, effective access control paired with the right membership management software package will retain more money in your business than any piece of equipment on the gym floor. As a provider of high quality access control and membership cards we are able to provide two of three elements that make for successful traffic control and facility security. The third element is a club management package that allows for easy integration of our hardware and a club or facilities database. Not only was it important to find a suitable partner that gave us the third element to our package, it was crucial they shared the same ideas and ethics when it came to business decisions and affordable pricing. In
2010 we began working with Club Manager Central. In the past 5 years we have been involved with countless projects together and managed to establish a slick and effective working relationship. Club Manager provide one of the most complete membership management packages available on the market today, also the system is being continuously updated in line with feedback from customer’s insights into the day to day working of the system. We are now able to integrate all of our products with Club Manager completing our vision of providing the whole package to the market. Taking a closer look at the loss of revenue that can be seen when not having a complete verification and entrance security system in place, the impact it can have on a business is substantial. Take a club with 1000 members, all of which pay via direct debit @£35.00 PCM. If just 1% of the membership base is out of contract, missing direct
debit payments or using the club illegally stands to cost the club over ÂŁ4,500.00 annually! We regularly install fully integrated turnstiles for around half of that cost, essentially allowing the systems to pay for themselves within the course of a few short months. A simple, smart investment into an access control system paired with an online database and management package eliminates the risk of members using the club illegally through verification before point of entry. When in place, the system retains a substantial amount of income every month and stops people from abusing the facilities. To discover how ID Card Supplies and Club Manager can help your business please visit our website www.idcardsupplies.co.uk, Email us via sales@idcardsupplies.co.uk or call the office on 01522 793053 and one of our team will be delighted to help with any enquiries.

Gym Floor
Buying Guide
Gym flooring is a crucial part of any successful gym fit out and is often not given the consideration necessary. This is why we’ve taken the time to create this gym flooring buying guide to make sure you have all the information you need before starting to make your decision. Far too often, flooring is left until the very last moment and this is one of the most common mistakes we find made in the refurbishment of fitness facilities. Fitness flooring is a speciality like the specification of the free weights, cardio or functional zone and needs to be part of the early planning of the space when considering the space allocation for each zone within the gym.
Plan How you’re going to use the space
When you initially create a plan or layout for your space, whether this is a refurbishment or a completely new project, give consideration to the space you have or wish to utilise for each zone of the gym. Don't start with choosing equipment, start with the zones or areas you want to have in your gym and the percentage of space you wish to allocate to each zone. Then think about the types of equipment you wish to put into each zone to identify the appropriately corresponding flooring.
Survey Your existing floor
It is important to be aware of the current flooring in the space. You will need to investigate the top layer and also what the flooring construction is. Is the floor concrete, a raised floor or wooden? Does the floor need to be screed or will any preparation be required to the underlay in advance of laying a new floor.
Underlay
The underlay will completely depend upon the level and intensity of usage within the zone or area of the gym. An underlay may be required in certain zones if the equipment or floor will be at risk of damage. Free weights areas are likely to require an increased level of impact absorption and will hence need a thicker underlay. In any area where there is a risk of impact to either the floor or equipment then an impact absorption underlay may be required.
Fitness & Beauty Professional 027
Flooring & Equipment life cycle
Fitness equipment will often be considered to have a 3, 5 or 7 year life cycle depending upon the usage, brand and specifications it has. We would recommend giving the life cycle cost of the flooring consideration at the fit out stage so you don’t have to replace the flooring in advance of the equipment in the gym which can sometimes cause a great deal of inconvenience.
What Type of flooring?
The next question you need to ask yourself is; How is the floor going to be installed? There are three main types of flooring.
Rolls
Rubber flooring rolls are often a cheaper option than tiles and installation involves much less work. Depending on how thick the rolls are they are made in varying lengths. For example, Rephouse flooring rolls which are 10mm or thicker, come in 10m rolls however thinner rolls are 20m long. Rolls are sometimes preferred because they give a much smooth look to the floor, with far fewer joins. Fewer joins also means there is no chance of gaps forming or becoming loose.
Tiles
Simple square tiles are more common in medium depth to thicker tiles as opposed to thinner tiles up to 10mm. It’s important that these are laid properly as they will normally have to be fastened to the floor. The reason for this is that because they are not interlocking, the edges need to be accurately fastened to ensure there are no gaps or imperfections.
Interlocking
Many gym flooring products use a jigsaw locking system and are heavy enough that this type of installation will be perfectly secure without the use of adhesives. However, the thinner the flooring is, the less secure these connections will be. Some flooring which can expand and contract in different climatic conditions will require expansion joints and this is often something which is overlooked.
Other Flooring solutions
Some gyms choose a variety of flooring options other than tiles and rolls of matting. Some places opt to use a hard wearing thin carpet under fixed resistance machines or in other areas. The difficulty you face when using carpeted areas is that they are far harder to clean than solid flooring and can become unpleasant after a while. Linoleum and real wood flooring is also used in some gyms and sports centres. The downside of using one of these classic types of flooring is that they provide very low impact absorption loud and also don’t provide a particularly good grip. Most of the treadmills and indoor cycles that we sell are bought along with a mat for underneath. Protective cardio equipment mats are ideal for home equipment that isn’t in a permanent position. These PVC mats are about 6mm thick and provide great grip and protection for the flooring underneath your equipment.

7 Winter Essentials 030 Kit Bag Essentials Fitness & Beauty Professional
That You and Your Gym Bag Need
Pack your gym bag in a way that will keep you warm, healthy, and glowing all Winter long. Since your gym bag is almost of equal importance as your workout and goes everywhere with you, make the most of it this holiday season. Simple swaps like an extra pair of running tights and a Winter-worthy snack will keep you out of a cold-weather rut and going strong no matter what temperatures the weatherman predicts. Here are seven essentials we can’t live without! 1. Running Tights: Running tights are a Winter must because they are perfect for layering. Not only are they a substitute to leggings — just throw on a pair of boots and you’re ready for work — but the comfortable fit also makes them perfect for any girl and any workout. Running tights can also be paired under shorts for added warmth or packed in your gym bag for an extra layer under sweatpants before you head outside. 2. Sanitizer: Let’s face it, the gym is a likely place to catch a cold or the flu this Winter. Take extra precaution by keeping yourself and your equipment clean. Let your inner germaphobe shine by packing cleansers in your gym bag. Mix up one of these DIY cleaners or carry a pack of sanitizing wipes for a strong immune system this Winter. 3. Dry Shampoo: Nothing is worse than wet hair in the Winter. If you don’t have time to dry your hair after a shower, use dry shampoo. Dry shampoo will leave your hair smelling fresh while adding texture and volume. It is perfect for the days you need to run errands after the gym and will keep your hair healthy in between washes. 4. Fleece Headband: The perfect headband this Winter will do double duty: holding your hair in place while keeping your head warm. A fleece headband like thisLululemon Run With Me Ear Warmer ($32) will keep your ears warm before, during, and after a workout. It also acts as an additional layer under a bike or ski helmet.
5. Post-Workout Snack: Fruit is a great snack, but the freshest options are not always available during the Winter. If you’re looking for a post-workout snack that is easy to pack, try a iced gingerbread Clif Bar. This seasonal bar will satisfy your holiday cookie cravings (we promise), and the 4:1 ratio of carbohydrates to protein is an excellent choice for a post-workout recovery snack. 6. Heat Packs: You don’t have to be a skier to enjoy the benefits of a heat pack or patch. Pack a few heat patches in your gym bag to stay warm and stop achy muscles in their tracks. 7. Thick Moisturizer: The combination of Winter weather and having the heater on full blast can make your skin dry and flaky. Swap out your usual body lotion for a thicker body butter like Aveeno Positively Nourishing Whipped Souffle Body Cream ($10) to keep your skin moisturized well after your workout. If you’re prone to dry, chapped lips, don’t forget to pack some lip balm, too!

energy imbalances are stress, excess viral loads, the existence of imbalances in the body’s ‘ecosystem’ (fungi, bacteria, parasites) and the excess of electromagnetic contamination.” After the diagnosis, electromagnetic signals stimulate self-healing by using non-invasive techniques. HipTrac
Fitness & Beauty Professional 011

016 Shows & Events Fitness & Beauty Professional The Pool & Spa Expo is back; and whilst some annual events seem to come round quicker and quicker each year, this one actually has.

Manage your ‘Mo with
TanOrganic
November is just around the corner and that means it’s Movember Time! This is the time of the year when men all around the world sport everything from a handlebar to a horseshoe, to raise awareness of men’s health issues. The seasoned moustache aficionado is well versed in care and maintenance through his accumulated experience of the highs and lows of having some face fur. Here at TanOrganic, we have listed some top tips on moustachery because let’s face it, a man will never ask for direction! Grooming: It is often the forgotten necessity to a fine moustache, but grooming is essential for a sophisticated and well kept ‘mo. Nobody wants a crumb catcher so be sure to always wash your ‘mo as they can collect all sorts of things, which can lead to irritation or worse. Trimming: Weather you are going for the outrageous Dali look to the manly Magnum ‘mo, trimming is essential. Remember to dampen the hair when trimming, as it is a far easier operation. Use a comb to assist when trimming as it will help restrain your face furniture and make it a much easier operation. Maintenance: Applying TanOrganic Moisturising Dry Oil will do wonders for your moustache. Packed with natural oils, not only will it soothe and hydrate the dry skin that leads to that unbelievably itchy ‘mo, but it will also leave it super smooth and soft like a feather duster, which will not go unnoticed with the fairer sex. Just dispense a few drops in the palm of your hand, this is more than enough to create the perfect finish, and what’s more, it is absorbed instantly allowing you to get on with your day.
TanOrganic’s Moisturising Dry Oil is also an amazing unisex body moisturiser so not only will you have a luxurious lip sweater but also your body will feel as smooth as sculpted marble. Handlebar with care: When you are committing to some lipholstery for the first time, there are something’s that are best avoided. If you are a seasoned moficionado, you will have mastered the techniques required but for the novice, here are some foods to approach with caution: • Cappuccino or frothy coffees • Glass of milk • Guinness or any fine brew served with a fine creamy mousse • Flaming Sambuca’s • Spaghetti • Soup and soup like substaces • Meat Pies • Ice cream cones • Sticky BBQ ribs • Flaky croissants • Kebabs (oh dear!) • Sugary doughnuts • Taco fries Available from Boots, Lloyds Pharmacies, McCabes, Sam McCauleys, Bradleys Pharmacies, Hickeys Pharmacies and in most local pharmacies. Also available online from www.tanorganic.com

Founders Louise and Kate with Lucy Watson (Made in Chelsea)
"It’s the fact that we can offer the clients a 2-in-1 treatment that saw my bookings increase when I started offering Skinny Tan" commented Liverpool salon owner Joanne Dwyer (Intuition Spa) "But it is the colour, and the fact it isn’t drying their skin, that keeps them coming back". Skinny Tan is backed by Celebrity Interior Designer Kelly Hoppen which creates marketing hype and column inches. The brand has already attracted celebrities such as Lucy Watson, Casey Batchelor, Sam Bailey, Leah Wright, Charlie King and many more. This summer Caroline Flack will host Love Island where all contestant will be Skinny Tan-ed. This will create great brand recognition and predictions that Skinny Tan will be the feel-good hit of the summer with all leading Salons.

AWARD-WINNING ANDERSON’S HAIR
CONTINUES ITS PLIGHT TO SAVE BRITISH BEE
Award-winning hair salon Anderson’s Hair is continuing its plight to save the British Bee by hosting a ‘Bee Awareness day’ at its sustainable salon situated in the heart of Merchant City, Glasgow. The stylish salon embraces an eco-friendly ethos, which works in harmony with the values of its chosen product partner, Italian haircare manufacturer, Davines. Since it opened its doors in November 2014, the salon has enjoyed a string of successes including two award wins at the Salon Business Awards 2015, and most recently, scooping up the Best New Salon accolade at Creative Head’s Most Wanted Awards. Never one to rest on their laurels, however, the team not only provides its customers with affordable treatments in its beautiful salon, but also dedicates time and effort to improve their green credentials while giving something back to the environment. In May, the team facilitated a month-long focus on activities that encouraged guests, clients and their families, to become ‘friends of Plan Bee’ by a variety of means. Plan Bee is a movement that is exclusively engaged in the restoration of healthy honeybee colonies to their natural environment and the ethical production of honey and associated natural products. The total deficit of honeybee colonies across Europe amounts to around 13.4 million colonies, which is about 7 billion honeybees. This deficit affects our everyday lives directly as bees and other insect pollinators are the underpinnings of a successful agricultural economy. Without their free pollination services our supermarkets would have no strawberries, apples, pears or lemons, to name but a few.
Following on from the success of Plan Bee, the salon hosted a Bee Awareness Day, where guests and their families were invited to listen to a talk about Plan Bee and view a practical demonstration on harvesting honey from a real beehive. During the awareness day, visitors had the opportunity to ‘adopt a bee’, starting from £1 for a Drone, £1.50 for a Worker and £5 for the Queen Bee, herself. Each of the donations collected will go towards a real beehive, helping the honeybee population recover and support the honeybee related initiatives around the UK. Says Keith Anderson, Director, Anderson’s Hair: “We chose to support Plan Bee as its eco values work in synergy with Anderson’s Hair and Davines. Plan Bee demonstrates passion and commitment in creating a lasting contribution to the environment. “We will continue to spread awareness about the importance of bees, as they are not only essential to the health of the eco system, they are also vital to the world’s agricultural economy.”

HD BROWS LAUNCHES NEW EYE & BROW PRO PALETTE AS PART OF ITS
HD BROWS MAKE UP RANGE
This week sees the launch of the latest brow product in the HD Brows make up portfolio. The Eye&Brow Pro Palette is a compact containing six shades of long-lasting brow powders housed in one palette, and is designed for use by professional make up artists. It is the latest addition to the make up range created by Nilam Holmes-Patel, CEO and Founder of HD Brows and Francesca Neill, celebrity make up artist and Creative Director of HD Brows. The Eye&Brow Pro Palette brings together the six coloured brow powders, from the three Eye&Brow Palettes – light blonde, medium blonde, dark blonde, medium brown, dark brown and carbon – in to one handy compact, making it a staple addition to any make up artist’s kit. The powder is best applied using an angled brush, to create a soft, natural look. As explained by Nilam: “The Eye&Brow Pro Palette is perfect for using on clients, to fill in spaces in the brows or to create a bolder look. My key piece of advice would be to ensure you match brow colour to skin tone. For blondes, I’d suggest going one to two shades darker than their hair colour, and for those with darker hair, go one to two shades lighter than the hair.” Consumer RRP: £60 incl VAT Pro price (Stylists, stockists and make up artists): £34 excl VAT To learn more about High Definition: Visit www.hdbrows.com
