Sam Smith social media plug sends wellness book sales soaring
Oasis, Robbie Williams and a string of famous brands spent years fruitlessly trying to crack America. For wellness author Amelia Freer, all it took was one Instagram post from UK soul sensation Sam Smith. In perhaps the starkest example yet of the power celebrity social media endorsements can have on a brand s fortunes, Smith has catapulted Freer s book Eat. Nourish. Glow. to the top of bestseller lists. Harper Collins had no plans to publish the book in the US, but after Smith s plug attracted 150,000 likes on Instagram, the company rapidly scrambled the book into print, according to The Wrap. The 22-year-old chart topping singer has hit headlines in recent weeks thanks to his dramatic weight loss, which Smith credited to Freer s clean home-cooking philosophy.
I am having to pinch myself. It was a dream come true for me to just write a book but In an Instagram post, Smith wrote: Three weeks ago I met a woman who has completely changed my life. HIIT is going absolutely insane for us and it s all people seem to want at the moment, he told Health Club Management at a recent briefing. I think it s likely to stick around. It s time efficient, delivers great results and poses a really intense workout that seems to motivate people ‒ it almost gives class participants bragging rights.
HIIT will remain hot says Phillip Mills
The health and fitness industry s love of high intensity interval training (HIIT) is unlikely to abate any time soon, according to industry pioneer Phillips Mills, who says its ethos makes it the ideal fit for modern lifestyles. Consumer demand for HIIT has been huge in recent years, but despite the cyclical nature of trends, the Les Mills CEO believes the training will enjoy further longevity, citing the popularity of Les Mills HIIT-themed GRIT classes as a prime example.
Pointing out the drastic shifts in fitness thinking, Mills noted that, historically, HIIT has been frowned upon as a training method. Mills recalled the dogmatic school of thought prevalent in the 1980s ‒ that working at high intensity was wrong as you can only burn fat working at low intensity ‒ as an example of how much the industry has since progressed. If you want a great physique ‒ you want to do HIIT, he added. It s great for our physiology to be carrying out a wide range of different movements. And participants are not just burning fat ‒ they re also getting a huge hit of hormones.
Pure Gym powers profits to £10m Pure Gym posted a strong set of financial results today (30 March), revealing that group profits for 2014 leapt 365 per cent to hit £10m. The financial results for the 12-months to 31 December 2014 were powered by the opening of 24 new gyms, as the low cost chain shook off the disappointment of its failed merger with The Gym Group to lift revenue to £68.6m ‒ an increase of 49 per cent. Meanwhile, member growth of 46 per cent outstripped the 40 per cent increase in venues, helping the chain reach 420,000 members. In 2014 we delivered impressive financial performance whilst managing significant
expansion, said Pure Gym executive chair Peter Roberts. In just five years Pure Gym has established itself as the leading gym operator in the UK and made gym membership a reality for hundreds of thousands of people. We have further exciting expansion plans for 2015 and look forward to another year of growth. The figures are a strong indicator that the march of the UK s low cost gym sector looks likely to continue, despite increased competition from existing players and new entrants such as Sports Direct.

NorthEdge Capital backs Total Fitness takeover with £11.5m investment Privaty equity firm NorthEdge Capital has backed a buyout of Total Fitness Health Clubs Limited - led by the gym chains s management team - to the tune of £11.5m. The overall value of the deal has not been disclosed, but it sees new majority stakeholder NorthEdge and Total Fitness management acquire the business from previous owners Barclays Bank, Co-op bank and RooGreen Ventures. Alongside a partial realisation of its equity, RooGreen Ventures has reinvested in the business as part of the buyout, with RooGreen partner Warwick Ley remaining on the Total Fitness Board as non-executive chair. Headquartered in Wilmslow, Cheshire, Total Fitness operates 17 fitness and leisure clubs across the North of England, with more than 87,000 members and approximately 550 employees. The deal brings to a conclusion a successful turnaround of the business which has seen RooGreen partners Brian Davidson and Ley work with Total Fitness CEO Richard Millman and the management team over the last two years to deliver a significant growth in the membership base, which has increased by 14 per cent since December 2012, and taken the business back into profit.
We are really excited as a management team to be working with NorthEdge as a new partner in the continuing success story that is Total Fitness Health Clubs, said Millman. There is a real confidence and clarity within the business as demonstrated by our membership results, increasing profitability, and our major investment programme. Everyone is tremendously excited about the further opportunities which are up for grabs in the coming years. The buyout will see the existing management team, led by Millman, receive significant new investment for plans to foster growth and achieve their vision of being the dominant health club chain in the North of England. The first act of this will be the re-opening of the Total Fitness club in Wrexham during early April, following a £1m refurbishment. NorthEdge partner Ray Stenton, who led the buyout and will now join the Total Fitness Board as non-executive director, said: Total Fitness is a great business with a fantastic brand. There is an ambitious investment strategy in place and we look forward to working alongside the management team to bring this to fruition and deliver on its growth objectives.
King s Cross natural swimming pool by Ooze Architects set to open in April Designed by Rotterdam-based Ooze Architects, a naturally filtered swimming pool is under construction in the heart of London s King s Cross redevelopment. Ooze Architects, working in collaboration with Slovenia-based artist Marjetica Potrc, have come together to create the freshwater pond. The structure will be 10m (32ft) wide and 40m (131ft) long. Completely chemical free, the pool, which will be used for swimming and outdoor activities, will be surrounded by a green landscape. By using a natural closed-loop process, combining the wetlands and submerged water plants, the water will be filtered and remain clear. Efa Pfannes, founder of Ooze Architects said: The project is a small-scale enclaved environment; a living laboratory to test
balance and to question a self-sustaining system including one nature cycle - water, land and the human body. Actors (visitors to the project) are part of the process. Visitors enter a living laboratory where they are aware of their relationship with nature, and about consequences of their interaction with nature and take responsibilities, they thus become actors. Ooze s development is part of Argent s overall masterplan for King s Cross, the largest urban redevelopment project in Europe. Although no specific opening date is set, the temporary pool should be accessible to the public in April.
Serco Leisure scores Birmingham Council contract win as sale process continues Serco Leisure has won a 15-year contract with Birmingham City Council to manage nine leisure centres across the city, including the design, build and operation of four new swimming pools. According to Birmingham City Council s assistant director for sport and events, Steve Hollingworth, Serco Leisure submitted quality and cost effective tenders which will help to promote activity in the city despite the council s considerable budgetary restraints. The leisure centres were previously operated inhouse. The awarding marks a big win for Serco, at a time when it is undergoing a major transition. The services giant is looking to offload several of its non-core businesses as part of a strategy overhaul, including its extensive Serco Leisure arm, which manages more than 60 facilities. Leisure Opportunities was recently informed by a wellplaced source that a sale of the leisure arm of the business is expected to be completed this summer, with two UK buyers thought to be in contention. Asked to verify this information, a Serco spokesperson said: Discussions regarding the potential sale of our leisure business are underway but this is likely to be a lengthy process. The leisure business is a separate company within the Serco Group and it would be that same separate company that would continue to deliver all of our leisure contracts when any sale goes ahead. This means there would be no impact on the delivery of the contracts ‒ the same quality service would be delivered by the same centre staff and management under new ownership. In the meantime, it is business as usual.

PROTEIN FOR
BEAUTY Getting enough protein is crucial to maintaining a healthy body inside and out. We all know about how protein can help aid weight management/ loss, add muscle definition and help our bodies recover after a tough session at the gym. But did you know that its also vital to maintaining healthy nails, shiny hair and glowing skin? Rhiannon Lambert (first class BSc in Nutrition & Health and registered with the Association for Nutrition) is an Ambassador for Wheyhey protein ice cream. An avid foodie, Rhiannon has worked with Masterchef s Gregg Wallace and has created recipes for amongst others, The Detox Kitchen and The Recovery Cafe. Rhiannon s experience at fitness boutique Transition Zone has seen her work with Olympic athletes and witness the dramatic impact healthy eating can have on performance at the highest level. Here she tells us why what we eat is just as ‒ if not more - important for our beauty regime than having the latest anti aging cream. The cells that make up your muscles, the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, nerves, brain and your sex glands are all made of protein. And so is your hair, nails, skin and eyes! Protein is made from amino acids ‒ the building blocks for all cells ‒ and is therefore crucial for tissue repair and for the construction replacement of worn-out or dead cells, with the skin cells being replaced every 24 days. If your body doesn t have adequate protein, it can t regenerate cells properly, which is why you might to start to see brittle, lifeless hair, ageing skin and nails that are weak and prone to breaking. But just how much protein do you need? If you have a balanced diet and are eating a lot of chicken, fish or eggs, you might be getting all the protein you need naturally. 46g daily is what the average woman needs, but this will increase if you re active! If you need to top up your protein, there are loads of innovative ways to do this; vegetables contain protein too so load up your plate with greens and beans. Then for a healthy treat, enjoy your delicious Wheyhey protein ice cream!
Include these other nutrients to help boost your beauty naturally: • Zinc, which accelerates the renewal of cells • Selenium is an antioxidant mineral that helps protect the skin from sun damage; it also helps the skin maintain firmness and elasticity • Omega3 ‒ Although not classified as antioxidants, omega‒3 fatty acids help maintain cell membranes so that they are effective barriers ̶ allowing water and nutrients in but keeping toxins out. • Vitamin C ‒ great for helping prevent split ends • Vitamin E ‒ a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free-radical damage that leads to fine lines

Boost your performance through nutrition
Are you looking for new and natural ways to up your game, increase your energy levels and achieve better endurance? Here nutrition expert Pharma Nord gives some advice to boost your performance through nutrition. Athletes are constantly on the lookout for new and legal ways of boosting their performance. Many take supplements to ensure their bodies get all the nutrients they need. Here are the hottest supplements on the market right now and how they could help you get the most from your fitness and sporting regimes.
Nature s secret to more endurance
Prevent fatigue and weakness
Boost your energy metabolism
Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance which is responsible for 95 per cent of the body s energy output. It controls how much energy our cells are able to make.
Despite magnesium s pivotal role in energy production, many coaches and athletes remain unaware of its vital importance in maintaining health and performance. If magnesium levels are depleted, energy production is inhibited, and the eventual outcome is fatigue and weakness.
B Vitamins play an important role in energy metabolism, helping to convert carbohydrates and fats into energy. They are usually most effective when taken in combination as a vitamin B complex.
Although some Q10 is obtained through our diet, most is manufactured within the body. From the age of 25, the body s ability to manufacture the substance decreases. Intense physical exercise can also deplete Q10 levels. It is possible to refuel your cells with a Q10 supplement. In a scientific study in Finland, 94 per cent of skiers who took coenzyme Q10 reported that their performance had improved. In Germany, elite athletes taking Q10 performed 29 per cent better than those not taking the supplement.
Magnesium also helps to regulate potassium levels and the function of the adrenal gland, which are both important for maintaining adequate energy levels. This mineral is also vital for normal muscle functioning. Factors such as stress, intense physical exercise, high intake of alcohol and caffeine and an unhealthy diet can all have an effect on magnesium levels.

Here s how Sean Penn got his lean and muscled look for The Gunman
There is no age to get fit. Hollywood actor Sean Penn underwent special training to develop a lean, mean and muscled look in his new release, The Gunman . The regime that the 50-plus actor followed was nothing short of inspiring. Dieting for optimal muscle gain It takes a lot of discipline and determination to get into the business of muscle gain, and Sean Penn had to take on that challenge through following a strict nutritional plan. As seen below, his strategy was simple: add more calories to the regular diet to gain a well buffed and toned body.
Increased his intake of protein in the form of lean meats, eggs, fish and chicken. Expert s opinion: Sean Penn has taken a perfect diet which has a comprehensive mix of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Besides, these are natural foods. Lean meats, eggs, fish and chicken rich in protein give the right combination for bulking the muscles, says city-based Dr Anil Patil. One can also add nuts and oils that are essential to keep up the metabolism and a good source of fats that give energy, he adds. For a leaner look with less body fat, he relied on well-measured carbohydrate sources including wheat and other grains. Expert opinion: Wheat and other grains synthesise better and give a leaner look, says Patil. Natural herbal supplements that added up to the effect of more body fat loss and revealed a better toned body. Expert s opinion: Supplements are essential. Of these, whey protein is a basic well-known supplement. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor before one takes up any kind of supplement. Especially, if there is a history of some disease or intolerance to the substance, cautions Dr Patil. Weight training Penn took up a stringent form of weight training that enabled him to lift weights in minimal repetitions but with heavy weights. The muscle he gained from this practice is closely formatted to the classic body building plan of lifting weights to a maximum of at least four times a week. However, you can t start just like that, warns fitness therapist Neeraj Mehta. Anyone above 50 must
consult their physician and get his consent before beginning with any fitness training, more so if they have a medical condition. They should go ahead only if they are cleared, suggests Mehta. What the expert says Isolation workouts focus on either a specific body part or an individual joint or a muscle. They are referred to as isolation exercise when they involve only a single joint, but when the focus is a body part like chest or legs, they are called isolation station-based exercises. Normally, isolation exercises are not recommended to those above 50, as they focus on a single joint or muscle, and can be a bit strenuous. However, they are very useful in sculpting a specific muscle to one s liking. What we recommend instead is isolation station-based exercises which work on a particular body part like Cable pull down, which works on back and legs as well as triceps. Penn s workout regime is a good combination of both, and this is a very good strategy, says Mehta. However, one is advised to check with a trainer before copying someone else s fitness plan as not everything works for everyone. The secret is to know one s body and train accordingly. An expert trainer can guide you in the right direction, sums up Mehta. For vegetarians There aren t many alternatives for vegetarians. There are sprouts, tofu and soya, but one has to eat 10 bowls of sprouts which equals to two breast of chicken.

Not All Massage Tables Are Created Equal Even the most relaxing and skilfully executed treatment can be ineffective if the massage table is uncomfortable, creaks with the slightest movement or feels like it might collapse at any time. But these days, with many therapists having to leave the industry or reduce their activities as a result of a major or repetitive strain injury, ergonomics has become an increasingly important consideration for the therapist as well as the client.
Choosing a massage table can be daunting; with so many to choose from, I often meet therapists who are concerned about spending their money on the wrong type of table. It is absolutely essential that you buy the table that is right for your business, and this includes ensuring that the table fits you and will give you the best chance of avoiding unnecessary injury or discomfort.
Certain Factors Key to a Successful Purchase Table Width The width of a massage table is the measurement across the table between the two furthest points. It is usually expressed in inches. The ideal width of a table is a matter of personal preference, so we recommend that you make your decision based on the following three key variables: The Treatments You Offer Some treatments are better performed with a narrower table, particularly when strong pressure needs to be applied, such as deep tissue or sports massage. In this instance, the use of a narrower table offers a number of inherent benefits. Access to the lumbar area is more convenient, and thus a greater point load can be applied, resulting in a more effective treatment. The reduced leaning and stretching required to administer treatment is also beneficial for your long-term well being as a therapist. Your Stature There are two factors that should be taken into account in relation to your height: • Carrying the table • Using it. The width of your couch when folded for carrying, should be less than your inside leg measurement. So if you plan to be truly mobile and are shorter than approximately 5 5 , we would advise you to consider a narrow couch (24-26 ) to ensure comfort and portability. At the same time, a narrower table minimizes the risk of injury caused by excessive leaning across the table. A taller therapist will be able to reach further and can manage a wider table more comfortably.
Face Cradle
Your Clients Comfort Wider couches are more comfortable for the client. Traditionally, 24 tables have been standard in the UK. These are fantastic from the therapist s point of view as they are often lighter and, for the shorter therapist, easier to carry. However, as a population we are following the trend of most industrialized nations by getting bigger. Clients spread on a table more readily than perhaps they did 15 years ago and larger clients might find a narrower table disconcerting and less supportive. It is therefore worth working out if you can manage with a slightly wider table. The most popular widths in the UK and Ireland these days are between 26 and 28 . Foam Thickness and Composition The ideal foam density and depth for a table is dependent upon the type of treatments you wish to carry out. As a basic rule, when pressing into the couch with your hand, you should never be able to feel the wooden base though the foam. Sports and remedial treatments are better
Fitness & Beauty Professional 027 on a firm surface so that when pressure is applied, the force is not dissipated through a soft base. You want the foam to have enough rigidity to resist this pressure. By the same token, if you require extreme comfort for your clients, then choose a softer foam mix and a greater depth. This should supply comfort as well as support. A mix of different foams arranged in layers, offering a good contrast of soft and supportive properties, is the best way to construct a quality massage table. Mid-range tables tend to be constructed in this way, whilst more expensive massage tables can be selected for more specific use. You should discuss your individual requirements with your specialist retailer. Responsible manufacturers will offer flame retardant foam as standard and this is a good, indirect indicator of the quality of the supplier. If in doubt, you can ask to see a certificate.
manufacturers will make your table to a custom height. I would strongly advise against buying a table that is of fixed height and not made to your specifications. If you are not the right size for the fixed-height table, the extra stretching and reaching will have an adverse effect on your body, which may affect your earning power in the future. Flat or Tilting Tilting tables offer the option of lifting one section into a vertical position. Flat tables are always lighter than their tilting equivalents. Typically they vary by two to three kilograms. The reason is quite simple: if you consider a convertible car, in order for it to remain stiff and strong, the chassis must be strengthened. In the same way, the tilting massage table needs a stiffer sub-frame, and this of course adds to the weight. The lifting mechanism itself also adds weight to the table. If you do not need a lifting back rest, they are therefore best avoided, but if you envisage needing this feature in the future, it is best to invest in it from the outset. Lifting Backrest Angle Many tables only lift to 30° . Usually, a greater angle of movement is considered preferable. For example, in the case of a treatment such as reflexology, clients often prefer to sit up so that they can see their therapist and talk to them. At 30° , they will be staring at the ceiling or straining their neck to sit up. Therefore a table with a greater lifting angle is considered a better purchase, providing it remains stable. Lifting Mechanism The lifting angle on a tilting table can be altered using one of two methods. The first is via a central pole attached to the backrest that slots through a bracket attached to the sub-frame of the table. I dislike this method for two reasons: the pole can make a scraping noise during adjustment but more importantly, the use of only one securing point in the centre of the tilting section means that the backrest is more liable to wobble. This will be less comfortable for the client. The second method is the use of ratchets that are attached to each side of the lifting backrest. This usually allows for 10 different height settings that click into place. The drawback of this design is that when the lifting backrest is set it must be pushed all the way forward to return it to a flat position. This can be an inconvenience if the client is on the table at the time.
Height Adjustment Ensure your chosen table will adjust to the correct height for you and will close when set at this height. You should be able to adjust your table to match your inside leg measurement ‒ so that your hip is level with the top of the foamfilled vinyl. Taller readers who need to set their table at full height should check whether it will remain stable when adjusted to the maximum. Some quality bespoke table
End Panels End panels are the pieces of metal or timber that separate the legs of the table at the head and foot end. The selection of the appropriate end panel is a very important consideration for those therapists who treat their clients seated or who need close access to them. L.L. Bean Bean Canteen Reusable Water Bottle
These stainless steel bottles are leak- and spill-proof. Only the lids are plastic. A carabineer (attached to the bottle lid) can be clipped onto a belt or bag during lengthy treks. The wide mouth on the bottle makes it easy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher. The larger bottle is fairly heavy when filled with water; the wide mouth makes both bottles difficult to sip from. In black, blue, green, red, orange, pink, stainless, plus five designs. llbean.com.
Water Bott
Nalgene Backpacker Stainless Steel Reusable Water Bottle This bottle was the most expensive model we tested. It s made from stainless steel that does not have a plastic liner. Only the lid is plastic. The attached lid is rare on a metal water bottle. The large mouth of the bottle makes it easy to clean thoroughly by hand or in the dishwasher. The bottle weighs over 2 1/2 pounds when filled. Testers found the lid difficult to open. The wide shape of the bottle makes it very difficult to grasp, plus the thick lip makes it uncomfortable to sip from. It also dented in our drop test. In stainless only. nalgeneoutdoor.com.
Nathan Flip Straw Pure Bottle
This sturdy bottle won t leak or spill. It s made from Eastman Tritan plastic, which the manufacturer claims is BPA-free. The flip-up straw built into the lid is easy to use and comfy to sip from. A carabineer-style clip is attached to the lid so you can hook the bottle onto a belt loop or a backpack. Grasping the bottle can feel uncomfortable, as there are no indentations or grooves for fingers. In clear, violet, and orange. Also available in 500-milliliter and 1-liter sizes, which we didn t test. dickssportinggoods.com.

Fitness & Beauty Professional Best Water Bottle 035
Contigo Hydration Intak by Thermos Water Bottle Stainless Steel Leak-proof and loaded with nifty Hydration Bottle features, these bottles are made from Eastman Tritan plastic, which the Model #HS4040 manufacturer claims is BPA free. With built-in carabineers on the lids, these clip onto belt loops or backpacks. Other good news: Water won t escape when you toss the bottle in your bag because the Autoseal feature opens the sipping mechanism only when you press and hold a button. When ďŹ lled to capacity, these bottles are quite heavy, with the large one weighing around 2 1/2 pounds. In lime green, orange, red, blue, pink, and charcoal. gocontigo.com.
Made from stainless steel, this bottle is insulated and keeps drinks cold for more than two hours. A rubber grip makes grasping the bottle secure and comfortable. A plastic cap pops up with the push of a button, making the bottle simple to open with one hand. Because it s insulated, this bottle must be cleaned by hand. Even though the bottle is stainless steel, it has a plastic spigot for sipping, making it an imperfect choice for somebody looking to avoid plastic altogether. It s one of two bottles that are not touted as dishwasher-safe. In charcoal and brown. thermos.com.
Cool Gear EZFreeze Pure Bottle
Cool Gear s Pure Bottle is durable, easy to open, and comes with a handy, non-toxic freezer gel insert, which keeps water cooler longer. But the bottle failed to impress otherwise. Testers said it was uncomfortable to hold and very diďŹƒcult to drink from, plus, it may leak or spill during use. The manufacturer promotes this bottle as BPA-free. coolgearinc.com.

Clean Apple Crumble and Vanilla Wheyhey Ice Cream! Ingredients: • • • • • •
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 175 celsius. 2. Peel apples and chop them up in small pieces. Place the apples in a pot with a tiny squeeze of lemon juice to help keep their color and a dash of cinnamon and the stevia/xylitol. 3. Cook apples until they are almost broken down. 4. Place all ingredients for the crumble in a bowl and rub together with fingertips until a crumb like texture is achieved.
Wheyhey Vanilla Ice Cream 2 large bramley apples 12 tbs xylitol/stevia 1 tbs of water Squeeze of lemon juice Cinamon (optional)
Crumble:
• 2 tbs coconut flour • 1 tbs porridge/oats • 1 tbs of coconut oil (I use it straight from the fridge which gives it the same • consistency as butter)
5. Place apples in a few jam jars or a small tin and cover with the crumble mix. Place them in the oven for about 10 ‒ 15 minutes until the crumble is crisp and a golden colour. 6. Remove from oven and serve with the amazing Wheyhey vanilla ice cream. *Make sure not to overfill the jars as it bubbles and pushes all the crumb mixture out so leave about an inch space at the top.
Clean Peanut Butter Cookies Ingredients: • • • • •
Directions:
- Yum!
1 280g jar of Natural peanut butter 2 eggs 3 tbs stevia (or more depending on taste) 1 tbs of Vanilla Essence Any flavor WheyHey ice-cream
1. Preheat oven to 175 C. 2. Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl, it might look too runny but if you keep mixing you will get a cookie dough consistency. 3. Get some cookie dough into your hands and roll into a ball. Repeat this until all dough is rolled up. 4. Place the rolled balls on parchment paper or a non stick cookie pan.
5. With a fork press down slightly on the cookie ball horizontally and vertically to create a flatter shape. 6. Place in the oven for 12 - 14 minutes depending on size. 7. When finished take them out and let them cool on a wire rack. 8. Get a spoonful of WheyHey ice-cream and place it on a cookie, sandwich it with another cookie on top. 9. You can also package them in some cling film and store in a freezer if you want them at a later stage.

So you ve started your New Year fitness regime, the workouts are long and hard and you put in 100%, but still not reaping the benefits you were expecting? You could be missing something in your nutrition. When we put ourselves through an extensive exercise regime, there s a higher demand on the body to function at optimum level, however when we are not eating or absorbing the right kind of nutrients, our bodies are put under strain and performance is compromised. Malnutrition is not only a huge problem in developing countries, but has become an ever increasing issue in first world countries, resulting in the same health detriments. There are an estimated 3 million malnourished people in the UK at any time, with many more at risk of becoming malnourished; (source: www.nhs.uk). Malnutrition, or vitamin and mineral deficiency, has been known to cause the following: • skin problems or rashes • swelling or oedema • poor vision at night or in dim light • feeling out of breath and tired all the time • bone and joint pain It is important to note that Daily Nutrition is very different to Sports Nutrition. When eating for sports training, you will require an entirely different diet, an excess of calories including high doses of protein at regular intervals throughout the day, and a balanced amount of certain vitamins and minerals. Normally you will be building muscle mass which requires the right amount of protein intake at specific times during your training routine. To find out more, go to the Anatomy Manchester website.
The NHS also states that the best way to assess malnourishment is by monitoring your BMI (Body Mass index) which essentially is your weight(kg) divided by your height (cm) squared. As simple as this calculation is, the BMI calculator does not differentiate between fat and muscle mass, as it only takes into account your overall weight. If you are lifting weights, your muscle mass will increase, actually elevating your BMI indicating an unhealthy outcome when in fact the opposite is true. BMI can therefore be a very inaccurate measurement of health and more fitness professionals are now looking at measuring body composition to establish an accurate assessment of health. A very quick, inexpensive and noninvasive method to measure body composition can be carried out with a portable Bodystat machine which uses bioelectrical impedance (BIA) to accurately measure the quantity of fat, lean muscle and water you have in your body. You are therefore able to track these measurements as you build muscle or lose body fat. This can be a very encouraging and motivational tool when embarking on a fitness regime, giving you insights and daily trending information to monitor your progress. To find out more, visit: www.bodystat.com or visit Bodystat at the Body Power Show from the 15-17th May in Birmingham on Stand M56 in Hall 19.

La Cure have a long standing reputation in the professional beauty industry as creators of supreme quality Dead Sea mineral skin care products for the face and body. They have now used their extensive experience to create Make Me, an innovative range of mud wraps and aromatherapy complexes that harness the natural healing qualities of Dead Sea minerals with effective essential oils and orange flower water essence to indulge the emotional and physical well-being.
As one of the leading manufacturers and distributers of professional products La Cure shall be attending BeautyUK at the NEC on the 10th and 11th of May this year. This is the perfect opportunity to discover both the La Cure and Make Me ranges, take advantage of exclusive show offers and experience a variety of treatment demonstrations on stand Q38.
The mud wraps combine Dead Sea mud with a blend of essential oils that promote healing and increase cell vitality, balance the skin s moisture levels, whilst strengthening bones and nails. Extensive testing has also led to the rare, successful integration of Dead Sea salt into aromatherapy complexes, delivering the unique therapeutic and beautifying benefits as nature intended. These can be used in conjunction with the mud wraps or as standalone treatments. The versatility of the products makes them perfect for professional use and also effective additions to the beauty regime at home. The ranges contain no artificial fragrances or colouring agents and use only the best grade of essential and carrier oils. Unique regenerative properties within Dead Sea minerals ensure both the La Cure and Make Me ranges are suitable for all ages and skin types including dehydrated, sensitive, dry and prematurely aged.
As pioneers in the development of new ranges La Cure have also been invited to run an educational seminar on Sunday the 10th at 12:00 within the ABT seminar programme. Our educational partner, Sumita Singh of Affable Therapy will cover the uses of facial oils in preventing and rectifying the signs of ageing, this is completely free to attend and samples will be available for distribution.

It’s All About Bath - Iconic Royal Crescent Hotel October 2014 - Under new ownership and following a multi-million pound renovation this year, The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is gaining gravitas as one of the UK’s must-visit hotels. Thanks to a meticulous restoration project, the remarkable building has been returned to its former glory and is heralded as a ‘British icon reborn’. For those seeking a midweek break, luxurious spa weekend or foodie getaway to Bath (voted the UK’s 3rd Best City in October’s Condé Nast Traveller Reader’s Awards), the ‘new look’ Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa has introduced a range of new packages and experiences for the winter season. A British Icon Reborn With a staggering location on the world famous Royal Crescent in Bath, this quintessential English heritage hotel has been luxuriously reconsidered for the 21st Century. Listed within the Best UK Holiday Hotels and the Best UK Hotel Spas categories in October’s Condé Nast Traveller Reader’s Awards, it’s already proving a hit. The refurbishment and restoration programme was a labour of love, with every effort made to restore this
beautiful example of Georgian heritage sympathetically. Somerset-based designer Jane Clayton Interiors worked with Brian Cohen, project manager on behalf of Topland Group , to carry out work on this prestigious project. History lovers will be thrilled not only by the hotel’s Georgian architecture, but by historical references throughout. The 45 rooms and suites were individually re-designed, plasterwork ceilings restored, and period features protected. Every room has been artfully curated to give it a distinctive character, with classic antique pieces such as four-poster beds or roll top baths. All of the suites have been named after famous Bath residents, including Lord Nelson, Gainsborough, Brinsley Sheridan, Eliza Lucas and Elizabeth Linley. Encouraging guests to experience these rooms and suites in style, the hotel has launched a series of new packages. Those looking for the ultimate Bath experience can take advantage of the new midweek Suite Indulgence offer that starts from £699 includes suite accommodation, breakfast, three course dinner in The Dower House Restaurant and one half hour spa treatment per person in The Spa .
& Spa Launches New Look and New Packages A Luxury Spa Retreat The Spa has been given a new lease of life by specialist company Spa Creators. Interior design embraces ancient and modern spa culture simultaneously - Georgian stone is met by natural woods, bamboo pebble and slate. In line with the re-launch, the spa has introduced a series of new residential packages, day retreats and offers. Examples include the One Night Spa Break which includes accommodation, two-course lunch, a one-hour spa treatment per person and costs from £400 per room per night based on two people sharing. The new Fabulous Four package offers a group of four the chance to enjoy the spa, sauna and steam room and get pampered with a facial or massage and mini manicure or pedicure. This costs from £299 for a group of four and includes lunch or afternoon tea at The Dower House Restaurant. A Foodie Haven Overlooking the leafy and secluded gardens of The Royal Crescent the AA 3 Rosette award-winning Dower House
Restaurant offers fine dining in elegant surroundings. Head Chef David Campbell and his team create modern takes on classic dishes. These are paired with wines from a comprehensive cellar, expertly managed by Sommelier Jean Marc Leitao. With soft gold and blue fabrics, and feature walls of handstitched silk wallpaper, the elegant interior design creates a distinguished atmosphere. In the summer months, the terrace and manicured lawns are an idyllic setting for al fresco dining. Evenings see guests and locals enjoy Chef David Campbell’s carefully crafted seasonal fine dining menu whilst the Afternoon Tea Menu starts from £25 and includes irresistible Bath buns. The Dower House now has a lunch menu offering three courses for £27. For more information visit www.royalcrescent.co.uk and for reservations call +44 (0) 1225 823333. CONCEPT2
mainstays of the fitness industry
I
f you go into any gym in the country, the chances are you ll see a Concept2 Indoor Rower.
For over 30 years now, Concept2 have been making rowing machines in their factory in Vermont, and in that time they ve become one of the mainstays of the fitness industry, becoming one of the few machines where the same model is used in both the institutional market and at home. This doesn t mean that Concept2 have stopped making changes though, and the last six months have seen the release of the next generation of two different products. At the heart of all Concept2 equipment is the sophisticated Performance Monitor, which provides accurate, comparable workout data. The latest version of the monitor is the PM5, which can now talk wirelessly to smartphones and tablets via Bluetooth. Users who download Concept2 s free app ErgData can track their improvement on their phone, as well as send their data to Concept2 s Online Logbook.
As well as Bluetooth, the monitor has a number of other improvements, including a backlight and USB connectivity, so even without a smartphone, users can store their workouts on any USB stick. One of the big advantages of the increased connectivity of the PM5 is that it means smartphones and tablets effectively become a second touchscreen colour monitor, said Alex Dunne, Managing Director of Concept2 Ltd. ErgData already gives extra feedback to the user that they can t get on the Performance Monitor. Now that it s easy for people to store and track their times on their phone, we expect this to be a very popular feature, especially in a gym environment. Also new at the end of last year is the second version of the SkiErg, Concept2 s cross-country ski trainer. Despite cross-country skiing not exactly being a regular activity in the UK, the SkiErg has become a word-of-mouth success, especially in the functional fitness market.
In countries like Sweden and Norway, everybody knows about cross-country skiing, so the SkiErg has a ready-made market, said Alex Dunne. Over here, we ve found that people often have to try it first, but that they then move very quickly from not being familiar with the cross-country ski motion, to understanding why Nordic skiers are known as some of the fittest athletes around. Just like the Indoor Rower, the SkiErg provides a high intensity workout, but it does so in a low impact, safe way For more information, call 0115 9340 140 or visit

Do you want to take more control
and freedom over your life? Did you think it too impossible to own your own club? Then a H3 franchise is the perfect match!
After 3 years of hugely successful trading, H3 Performance is really excited to announce the launch of its new franchise arm. With ready to use systems that yield outstanding results in a very short time, the H3 Franchise package is ideal not only as a new business start-up, but also as an extension to an existing health club or gym. The aim of the H3 Performance franchise is to give a prospective new owner the ultimate platform to not only compete in this industry, but thrive! Based predominantly upon small group coaching, H3 also specialise in seminars, nutritional coaching, personal training and merchandise selling, enabling franchisees more chance to earn a greater income. The fitness industry has changed old procedures and methodologies no longer work Says Head Coach Toby Liddiard. Treating members like income in our opinion is not suitable to a long lasting business model. A member s needs and desires are paramount to our success and it is critical we deliver on our promises Starting initially as a Personal Trainer at a mass market club, Toby now operates and runs H3 Performances flagship site in Nottingham and says more people like him should take the plunge and go into running their own business. I was in the rat race, training clients all day with little control over my own timetable and certainly with very little in the way of a social life However after meeting Jez Kearney the two collaborated on a new fitness concept that has given Toby back more control of his life. People are scared to start their own business because of the risk and fear of being alone, but this certainly is not the case with a H3. With 24/7 help, support and advice from the H3 team, the franchise model is designed to mitigate as much risk as possible whilst providing outstanding financial results and with revenue growth of over 45% year on year, who can argue!? If you think you have what it takes, we certainly have the time to invest in you. Contact the H3 Performance team at www.h3performance.co.uk/page/h3-franchising As together we can achieve more!!!
