INDUSTRY news Daniele Ragazzo’s Liaison Table is supported by giant pin-shaped legs Milan-based designer Daniele Ragazzo has created a table with a circular glass tabletop supported by thin stainless-steel legs that resemble upturned ball-headed sewing pins.

The legs of the Liaison Table are made of hand-polished stainless steel and are kept in place with ultraviolet curing glue – an adhesive that sets instantly when exposed to ultraviolet light.

The coloured balls at the base of each support are made of powder-coated steel.

Together, the legs look like an assortment of pins used to hold fabric in place before sewing.

The pins are angled slightly in different directions to create a solid structure for supporting a 15-millimetre pane of glass.

“The idea came from my desk,” Ragazzo told Dezeen. “I used to have a rubber with some coloured pins stuck into it. I used to play with it and one day I realised that it could stand perfectly and looked like a small table.”

“It was something I had in front of my eyes every day when I lived in Turin,” he added.

“Then I moved to Milan, and one day that image came into my mind from nowhere.”

Designed for everyday use, the table comes with a larger rectangular top or a smaller circular surface that requires less pins.

“I imagine it in large living spaces and it is structured to enable people to be seated around it comfortably,” said Ragazzo.

“However, it is not a table you can move frequently because of its weight and its balancing logic.”

Nine limited-edition Liaison Tables are available to purchase from the Spazio Rossana Orlandi gallery in Milan and the designs can also be made to order in any size or shape.

A home with big views and lots of privacy

Jonathan Ellis-Miller the architect behind one of the 100 key buildings of the century with his 1993 ‘case study’ house, is about to embark on yet another larger self-build in Cambridgeshire, UK This new design is influenced by the Californian minimalism of the late post-war architect, John Winter, who Ellis-Miller worked for 25 years ago, before starting his own practice. The house will be a home for Ellis-Miller himself and his family. It will be mostly prefabricated off-site with lean, lightweight materials and lowenergy technology.

It is set on a gentle upland landscape on the edge of a Cambridgeshire village. The rectangular steel-framed singlestorey house will ‘hover’ 300mm above ground level, cantilevered three metres from an inset grid of 14 columns set on pad foundations.

The cladding will be both transparent and opaque insulated glass, making the structure appear as a floating cube in the woodland landscape. The floor and roof frames continue into an open bay to

the west, sheltered by retractable awnings. The roof also projects eastwards to provide a care shelter.

The house will develop the areas of the two original 1990s houses, but brought bang up to date with contemporary materials and lifestyle demands. The Prospect House will also make use of advances in eco-technologies, with air source heat pumps, PVA cells and passive solar design techniques.

Inside there will be open plan high-ceilinged living and dining spaces at the heart of the house, with bedroom spaces on the southern and western side and cellular spaces including a utility room, study and guest bedroom on the north side.

Outside the landscape design complements the natural surroundings and continues a Modernist tradition of contextualising the clean lines of architecture within a softer planting scheme. The design facilitates the long-distance views across the fields by keeping the planting scheme expansive, while also creating privacy for the house.

INDUSTRY news Sustainable homes that reflect their surroundings

Carl Hansen & Søn opens showroom in London’s Clerkenwell Danish brand Carl Hansen & Son has opened a space in London’s Clerkenwell to showcase furniture by mid-century designers Hans J Wegner, Kaare Klint and Poul Kjaerholm.

Bates Smart have designed a unique multi-residential project for Defence Housing Australia (DHA), which reflects its unique relationship with its bush land context The DHA complex is exemplary of how to build functional, energy efficient, beautiful and marketable homes. The architects have taken a new approach to designing multi-residential buildings which reflects its landscape and has sustainability at its heart.

Designed in a ‘treehouse’ style, the dual-aspect, single-level apartments are suspended over sandstone cuttings and appear to float amongst the tree tops. Their contemporary, sophisticated look and feel, along with their functionality and comfort, unusual for a multi-residential building, make them appealing to a very wide market.

These apartments are also one of the first residential developments in NSW to undertake formal EnviroDevelopment accreditation, achieving the highest 6 leaves rating.

Carl Hansen & Son joins a number of international furniture companies with showrooms located in Clerkenwell, and opened its space on Bowling Green Lane to coincide with the area’s annual design festival this week.

“The UK is one of our strongest markets, with customers demanding great quality and craftsmanship in their furniture,” said CEO Knud Erik Hansen. “Also, with some of the world’s best architects and interior designers working out of London, we felt it was time to bring the whole universe of Carl Hansen & Son, as well as Rud Rasmussen, to this design-led city.”

The three-storey showroom is located in a historic building once owned by James Johnstone, the proprietor of the Morning Herald and Evening Standard newspapers.

The rooms feature large windows on both sides, set within exposed brick walls. Blackpainted columns run through the centre of the long, narrow spaces, with lighting mounted along linear frames on either side.

In the ground-floor gallery space, furniture is arranged as small room sets across the pale wood floor.

Pieces by Danish Modernist designer Hans J Wegner, including his iconic Wishbone chair, are displayed alongside Ole Wanscher’s Colonial Chair and Frits Henningsen’s Heritage Chair on the first level.

Designs licensed by Danish company Rud Rasmussen, which was acquired by Carl Hansen & Son in December 2011, are laid out on the second floor of the building – the first time the collection has been shown in the UK. As Denmark’s oldest cabinet-making workshop, the company produces the Faaborg Chair by Kaare Klint, the Mogens Koch Bookcase System, and Poul Kjaerholm’s Professor Desk – all of which are presented here.

Danish Modernist design has been growing in popularity with consumers over the past few years.

Companies including Carl Hansen and Republic of Fritz Hansen are now reproducing old products by Wegner and Arne Jacobsen, and an exhibition of Wegner’s furniture was presented at Copenhagen’s design museum last year.

Plan Bureau imagines a twin-peaked wooden house in the mountains A mountain setting prompted the design of this conceptual wooden residence, which features two cuboid volumes rotated at 45 degrees.

Ukrainian architect Kostiantyn Kuvika, the studio principal at Plan Bureau, designed the house for a mountain setting, although he says it could be adapted for different environments. Despite its unusual shape, he insists it could feasibly be built.

According to the architect, the structure’s diagonal lines create blurred transitions between these spaces.

“We were aiming to create a distinctive and memorable architectural object, which would be economically efficient to construct, highly transportable and installable,” Kuvika told Dezeen.

“Its functional and aesthetic characteristics should allow it to be built in different environments such as valleys, woods and mountains.”

Named Valley House, the project is visualised on a remote rural site surrounded by mountains – hence the twin-peaked profile.

Kuvika sees it as a holiday home for a family, with living spaces in its base and bedrooms in the boxy upper volumes.

INDUSTRY news Government wants zero carbon threshold at ten homes

Bijl Architecture reinterprets the traditional Dutch gable for a Sydney residence

Exempting housing projects of 10 units or fewer from the zero carbon standard when it is introduced in 2016 is confirmed as the Government’s preferred option, but a consultation published this week leaves the way open to alternative approaches.

The Government announced its plan to exempt ‘small sites’ from the full scope of revised regulations in the summer, but until now had not clarified where the threshold would fall.

It is estimated that a 10-unit cut-off would exempt around 20% of new homes from the zero carbon standard.

However, the consultation, ‘Next steps to zero carbon homes: small sites exemption’ makes it clear that the Government remains open to alternative ways of reducing the cost burden on small developers.

It is still asking whether a better approach might be to exempt small companies themselves, rather than small development sites. The advantage here would be that larger developers building out mainly small sites would be captured by higher standards.

The Government took the industry by surprise with its proposal to exempt small sites, prompting charges that it was further watering down the zero carbon standard, which is already set to allow a proportion of carbon emissions to be offset against energy savings made offsite through ‘Allowable Solutions’.

The front-running proposal now is that small sites, or small developers, would have to meet revised Part L regulations in 2016 (a 20% improvement, equivalent to Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes), but would not have to pay for offsite Allowable Solutions.

This would have the benefit of requiring all housing developments, large or small, to be built to the same minimum energy standards.

This week’s consultation also floats a further relaxation for discussion. This would see small sites (or developers) exempted both from a further strengthening of Part L and any payment for Allowable Solutions – a two-tiered approach to Building Regulations that would amount to a status quo for those qualifying for exemption.

The Government says it will review any exemption after five years, by which time the cost of meeting the zero carbon standard would be expected to fall. The consultation runs until 7 January 2015.

Sections of brick, zinc, timber and concrete highlight the intentionally irregular form of this Sydney residence – a result of myriad planning restrictions (+ slideshow).

Naremburn House was designed by local studio Bijl Architecture for a plot in a Sydney neighbourhood hemmed in by existing properties.

A number of planning restrictions dictated the scale of the new building, creating an irregular form that is made up of volumes that vary in proportion. The result represents a mixture of references to traditional styles. “[The house] interrogates traditional typologies, providing a site-specific response with an emphasis on thoughtful spatial planning and a robust materiality,” said the architects.

The asymmetric roof was designed as a reinterpretation of a traditional Dutch gable – also known as a gablet roof – which typically is a hipped roof with a small gable at the top. It also features one eave that is lower that the other, referencing a type of roof known as a catslide.

“A formal re-interpretation of traditional roof forms, such as the Dutch gable and catslide roof, allows a compact streetscape frontage that matches the scale of surrounding properties, while volumetric opportunities offered by the roof form are exploited to provide a useful and capacious floor plan,” said the design team.

“The Naremburn House manipulates the site topography through shifting volumes and geometries, playing with light, materials and form to create a house underpinned by

an intentional irregularity,” they added.

The catslide roof features on one section of the upper storey, which cantilevers over the lower storey at the rear and side of the house.

It is clad in lengths of red-brown timber and supported by a set of wooden legs at the back of the house, creating a covered terrace between the living room and swimming pool.

Internally, polished concrete floors are paired with white walls and timber-framed windows.

“Key to the design and realisation of the Naremburn House was the clients’ desire to reside in the dwelling for the long term,” added the architects, describing their choice of hardwearing materials throughout.

A double-height wall that follows the ascent of the central stairwell is covered in carved white Corian.

Based on parametric drawings, the ridged patterns were CNC machined into the surface of the composite material.

Four bedrooms were arranged around the stairwell on the upper floor, which is topped by two angled skylights. Glass balustrades allow light to pass into both the bedrooms and to the open-plan kitchen and living room below.

A combination of spot and strip lighting is set into the ceiling and wall of the living room. Sliding glass doors open from this space onto the poolside terrace, and castconcrete steps lead up from the slightly sunken terrace into the back garden.

INDUSTRY news Make Architects unveils new subterranean studio in London May 2015 saw Make Architects open the doors to its new, London studio, a 1,300m2 renovated NCP car park located on the basement floor of Middlesex House, Cleveland Street in Fitzrovia.

Pre-let by Derwent London Plc under a 15 year lease, the subterranean space showcases an innovative, bespoke, and sustainable design, reflective of Make’s ambition to design the best buildings, places and spaces in the world.

The entrance to the new premises is located to the left of Middlesex House, a five-storey Art Deco-style building erected in 1934 and in use as a garment-making factory prior to its purchase by Derwent in the 1980s.

Upon arrival, staff and visitors are directed down to the below-ground studio via a series of stepped platforms - fashioned from the existing vehicle ramp. The grand entrance provides ample break out space for meetings and presentations and will be used as a gallery space showcasing internal and external creative talent. A lightweight, translucent ETFE canopy spans the ramp from street level down to the studio, creating a light, bright and welcoming enclosed space.

Illumination and natural light was key to the design of this basement space.

In addition to the translucent canopy in the entrance way, generous floor to ceiling heights of 3.7m allowed for full length windows and sliding doors to the east and south walls, with the doors leading into the south-facing garden.

There is a central lightwell comprising 8 x 5.5m glass blocks that draws in light from the courtyard space above. And further windows to the sides and the rear also allow natural light to filter down, with lightwells at the front, and restored 1930s Crittal windows along the ramp edge, further increasing daylight penetration.

The main office adopts an open-plan layout, in keeping with Make’s nonhierarchical company structure, with four generously-sized meeting rooms and ample break out space throughout, including the garden which provides an informal meeting space during the summer months. The arrangement of circular desks around the existing, exposed car park concrete pillars has created a unique design feature

providing additional desk area and a more collaborative environment.

The design of the main studio has maintained the utilitarian, industrial look and feel of the car park – with exposed services, pipework and timeworn columns – while creating a highspec studio space which caters for all 171 employees.

The studio is inherently sustainable as a result of its unique design and its retained original features from the existing car park such as the exposed concrete. The installation of an underfloor heating/cooling system regulates the temperature of the studio, and the space operates with 100% LED lights.

Construction small businesses encouraged to attend asbestos awareness safety event Free workshops are being run across Lancashire to help small businesses better prevent the risk of exposure to asbestos.

Construction companies and small businesses are invited to attend one of six free half day events so they are aware of how they can avoid work that may disturb asbestos. This will include everyday activities, the risks of disturbing the fabric of the building and items that may contain asbestos.

The course is UKATA accredited and provides a comprehensive introduction to the dangers of working with asbestos, helping employers to comply with the law by ensuring that their workers are appropriately trained in order to work safely.

It covers: The properties of asbestos and how it can be damaging to your health, possibly giving you an increased risk of lung cancer if you are a smoker; The categories of asbestos, and how it is used in buildings and plants; How to deal with asbestos in an emergency; Avoiding risk from asbestos.

Dorothy Shaw, HSE Principal Inspector, said: “A very wide range of workers could potentially come into contact with Asbestos – ranging from traditional construction trades to the installation of telecommunications and computer equipment or shop fitting.

“These free events will provide essential information and advice that could help save lives, so I urge local businesses to attend.”

Extraordinary architectural project in Qatar features Neolith by TheSize Neolith by TheSize, a brand of all-natural, premium sintered compact surfaces, has been used to clad the new Salata Building in the heart of Doha, Qatar. Designed by Elias Bou Raffoul from E-Square Architects, this spectacular construction stands out for its striking geometrical aesthetics.

Elias Bou Raffoul, architect, explains: “The irregular lines embody the contrast and the relationship between a full and empty space, between an inner and outer space, and the negative and positive, creating the different structures of the building.” Neolith by TheSize was specified for its lightweight and large slab formats that provide a high performance solution and reduce installation time.

Neolith’s ventilated façade system can contribute to a building’s thermal efficiency in terms of energy consumption, with savings reaching up to 40%. Furthermore, the cladding offers insulation since it is resistant to UV exposure and temperature changes, factors that are crucial especially in a region where the climate can reach 50ºC. Elias Bou Raffoul used Neolith Avorio and Nero from the Colorfeel Collection, as well as Rojo Qatar, a colour developed exclusively for the project, to create a unique building that is durable, versatile and sustainable.

INDUSTRY news Build UK To Provide Stronger Industry Voice The new representative organisation for the contracting supply chain, which will be formed as a result of the merger between NSCC and the UK Contractors Group (UKCG), will be called Build UK. Earlier this month, it was confirmed that there is overwhelming support from members of both NSCC and UKCG to join up the contracting supply chain and they will formally vote to effect the merger in June 2015.

Government has consistently called for a more unified voice from the industry and over the last year NSCC and UKCG have found that they share a common position on a wide range of issues, including health and safety performance, skills shortages and the image of the industry. They have also worked together on the Construction Supply Chain Payment Charter and the industry-recognised logo for card schemes.

Build UK, which will bring together UKCG Contractor Members and Trade Associations currently in membership of either NSCC or UKCG, will be ideally placed to deliver changes in these key areas and so improve conditions for the supply chain as well as the construction industry and its clients.

An Interim Strategy Board comprising members of both NSCC and UKCG has been established to oversee the merger and the new organisation will be operational from 1 September 2015.

Build UK will be chaired by Kevin Louch (NSCC President) and James Wates (UKCG Chairman) and led by current NSCC Chief Executive Suzannah Nichol.

Kevin Louch said: “I believe that by sitting around the same table we will be able to have honest conversations about how projects can be delivered more effectively and Build UK offers the definite prospect of addressing major industry issues such as pre-qualification, skills and of course payment.”

James Wates said: “This is a huge step forward for the supply chain and, whilst there are some undeniable anxieties about how Build UK will function, all our discussions to date have been extremely positive.”

Restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1955 Fawcett house in Los Banos, California began in July 2012. The restoration architect studied the original plans, historic and family photographs, and conferred with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives, and members of the Taliesin Fellowship to insure vital colors, finishes and details. Lynn Fawcett Whiting, the owner’s daughter, Frank Lloyd Wright’s grandson, architect Eric Lloyd Wright and Frank Lloyd Wright’s interior designer for the home, Cornelia Brierley were also consulted throughout.

Additionally, the restoration closely followed the U.S. Secretary of the Interior Guidelines and Standards for historic preservation. While preserving as much of the original structure as possible, the restoration involved structural stabilization, selective demolition of previous additions and alterations, updating of building systems (including mechanical, electrical and plumbing), and complete interior and exterior restoration – walls, floors, walks, doors, windows, hardware, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed furniture, and fireplaces.

The original design sketches by Frank Lloyd Wright showed several items such as a caldron in the Living Room fireplace and a forecourt for the entry and carport area.

None of these were built by the original owners, but were completed as part of the restoration. Although in dire need of refurbishing, the mahogany paneling, doors and cabinets remained otherwise relatively unscathed. Original hardware was refinished and restored. After extensive research and countless color samples, the concrete block walls that had been painted pink were returned to their original color. A serious ridge failure at east end of Living Room was structurally corrected and the original ceiling finish was replicated in the repairs. Failing cement plaster soffits were removed and re-plastered using the original color and textures. Fractured and uplifted colored concrete walks were replaced and extensive grading and drainage was employed to correct flooding and water damage that the home had suffered from its beginning. Today this iconic structure proudly stands as a testament to the later work of this important American architect.

Architects underestimate “potentially sinister” smart-home technologies says Rem Koolhaas Architect Rem Koolhaas has spoken out against the way technology is infiltrating buildings, saying it is “totally astonishing” that people are willing to sacrifice their privacy for convenience and describing the rise of smart systems as “potentially sinister”.

The OMA founder claimed that digital technologies represent the most radical shift in architectural practice for over a century – but that architects have become too distracted by the benefits and overlooked the dangers.

“The way we architects look at the digital is simplistic, because we see the digital simply as a domain that enables us a greater position and that ultimately – in the form of 3D printing for instance – may offer us a

return to unfettered creativity,” he said.

“But in the meantime, a lot of businesses are actually looking at architecture as potential carrier of new technologies.”

The Dutch architect described the increasing popularity of domestic systems like the ones offered by Nest, which allow residents to control devices such as thermostats and smoke alarms using a smartphone, as “weird”.

“There is a potentially sinister dimension to, before you know it, being surrounded by a house full of sensors that can follow you on the moment of entry, to the moment you set your bedroom temperature, to the moment you set your likely return to your house,” he said.

Return To Rise Hall This Time The Kitchens Get It!

ranite Transformations has returned once again to Rise Hall, the magnificent 19th century manor house restored by TV’s Sarah Beeny and artist husband Graham Swift, and this time the kitchen makeover specialist has actually helped transform two kitchens, the Butler’s Pantry and an ensuite installation in the hall managers’ live-in quarters.

Previously, the home improvements company has focused its skill on beautiful, bespoke bathrooms, styled by Sarah and Graham, the success of which prompted Granite Transformations to diversify into bathroom remodelling, alongside its core kitchen business.

“We found working alongside Sarah and Graham most inspiring, since they explored fresh applications for our surface finishes,” says Chief Operating Officer, Danny Hanlon.

“Even on this phase, they’ve managed to challenge us with an ensuite kitchen and elegant upgrade of a classic butler’s pantry.”

Rise Hall was the star of two Channel 4 documentaries, chronicling the restoration of this 97-room mansion in East Yorkshire, which is now rated as one of the North East’s finest wedding and conference venues. Sarah and Graham’s passion for Britain’s heritage and their attention to design detail are evident throughout, as is their use of functional and sympathetic new materials like Granite Transformations’ quartz, granite and recycled glass surfaces.

This time it refaced the countertops in the Butler’s Pantry, which is used by long-term guests and features a self-catering private kitchen facility for wedding parties. The original stone floor was retained in this high traffic area and a tough, luxurious Sachi granite finish was overlaid onto worktops, extended upwards as grease-resistant

splashbacks and oven surrounds. Simple white shaker-style doors grace the cabinets, transforming the space into a relaxing yet purposeful breakout area for guests.

Custodian and curator Helen Davies and her partner, Estate Manager Craig, live on-site and manage the day-to-day activities of the house, wedding venue and grounds. Sarah has transformed what was formerly her sister Caroline’s kitchen into elegant living quarters for the pair and their dog Percy. A sizeable corner of the room has been converted into plumbed-in kitchen space, complete with sink, fridge, microwave oven, base and wall units.

B.E. Architecture completes a trio of red brick houses for the same family These three brick buildings, featuring deep-set windows and internal courtyards, have been arranged by B.E. Architecture around a cobbled lane in the Australian town of Windsor.

Named the McIlwrick Street Residences, the trio of houses was designed by Melbourne-based B.E. Architecture to form a home for several generations of the same family. They interconnect via a series of enclosed patios.

Intended as a rental property to generate supplementary income for the client, this tiny Heceta Beach house on the Oregon coast, designed by Santa Monica, Calif.– based Steven Christensen Architecture, is to be built on an old foundation so as to take advantage of a loophole in local zoning code restrictions: The owners were allowed to rebuild as long as they used the original 195-square-foot foundation. The resulting design is a faceted mini-tower that expands as it rises to increase floor space; it is clad entirely in standing-seam white metal roofing interrupted only by large, blackframed windows that allow ocean views out and daylight into the compact interior.

The three-level house has one bedroom and bathroom on the lower level, living areas above that, and another bedroom and bathroom on the top floor, all tucked into a total of 800 square feet. The minimal interior is clad entirely in plywood with simple built-ins and off-the-shelf fixtures adding to the practical ethos of beach house living while streamlining the project’s budget.

Red brickwork and black steel detailing were intended to match the materials used in existing neighbourhood properties.

These are paired with contemporary details, including steel-framed windows set within deep brick-lined recesses and flat rooftops.

“Like an old European village, the development is a small cluster of buildings you can see through and walk between, such that the significant addition feels as though it could have always been there,” said the architects.

The Telguard range of telephone and GSM based intercom systems are suitable for new build or retro fit. Telguard is a British company and we design, develop and manufacture here in the UK.

The telephone based system plugs in to a standard analogue telephone socket or phone system extension and the GSM system requires a SIM card. The only other requirement is for local power and the intercom can be installed.

Installation is not disruptive as the installation takes place at the entrance to be controlled and there is no need to put handsets into flats or houses as they are already in place – their own telephone or mobile.

The telephone numbers of the apartments/houses/businesses are programmed into the intercom system with any access codes required and the system is ready for use.

A visitor enters the flat or house number into the intercom via the keypad and then presses the ‘CALL’ button. The receiver of the call picks the telephone and can speak to the visitor and allow access by pressing a digit on their telephone keypad. This sends a signal to the intercom that activates the door lock or entrance gate and the visitor is able to gain access. If the receiver of the call does not want to grant access they simply put their phone down to end the call.

If the call recipient is on the phone when the call from the intercom is made the call will be seen on the telephone display and the user is able to hold their call and deal with an access request.

Any alterations required to telephone numbers or PIN codes can be actioned by the system installer and can be carried out remotely reducing the need for on-site attendance.

The Telguard system is not only quick to install compared with hardwired systems but also extremely flexible. Calls can be answered on cordless telephones making it possible for users to answer entrance requests while going about day to day business or it is possible for a

mobile phone to be called for access requests.

We are able to provide systems with backlit keypads and buttons, integrated proximity access and video. The video picture can go to a dedicated monitor or into the communal TV aerial for viewing on any television in the premise. Our GSM 3g video system will send pictures to your mobile phone.

Telguard provides great flexibility where users are elderly or infirm as they don’t have to get up from where they are sitting to answer an access call as they will have their telephone or mobile phone by their side. They will also be able to hear the call clearly.

Special school boosted by Ergolet overhead hoist system

Danish mobility company Ergolet has installed its Luna overhead hoisting system, featuring the unique wall-mounted E-track, at Kingfisher Community Special School in Oldham to significantly improve pupils’ access to facilities throughout the building.

The installation – the first of its kind at a UK special school - was part of a multi-million pound refurbishment programme at the school, designed to ensure that children with complex and severe mobility needs have the best access to specialist learning environments.

“The original buildings date back to the 70s so to make the use of overhead hoists work together with the old building and the new build project, it would have been necessary to install additional cumbersome and costly steel beams. By using E-track, installation time can be reduced by 70%, giving a real cost saving”.

Cath Croke, Moving and Handling Manager at the school said the installation had made a significant difference to both pupils and staff. She said: “It has certainly made the quality of life so much better for those pupils with more severe mobility issues.

“Floor mounted mobile hoists aren’t suitable in soft play areas, for example, so this system literally means that all pupils, whatever their mobility issues, have the opportunity to access all the learning environments throughout the school.”

Have I got space Space requirements for a vertical lift

T

he space or footprint of a vertical lift in the building is decided through your requirements. These requirements broadly fit into two categories; whether the lift is going to be used by ambulant people or whether it requires the additional space to be used by wheelchair users.

When considering wheelchair users, the usual floor space on the platform or cabin should be at least 1100mm x 1400mm (as required by part M of the Building Regulations). Smaller sizes can be utilized, especially in private dwellings if the size of the wheelchair is known. The lift manufacturer will then have a shaft size suitable for that floor size of the lift.

For example, the MC2000 platform lift by Invalifts has a shaft size of 1250mm x 1560mm which is just a few centimetres larger than its 1100mm x 1400mm platform size. This compact shaft is possible, as a unique chain driven system is used enabling the largest platform size within the smallest shaft.

The other space requirement will be below the lift shaft, as most platform lifts will require a pit of between 55mm and 100mm. The MC2000 needs a 60mm pit, but if a pit cannot be formed then a ramp can be utilised at the lowest door.

If the lift is to be used as a home lift for ambulant individuals then the shaft can be made to very small dimensions. The type of drive system chosen again impacts on the footprint. The Inva Home Lift can be made with an incredibly small footprint size of 950mm x 1150mm. At these compact sizes, a platform lift can easily fit within a stairwell, or other area, taking up no more space than an armchair.

Can I fit an inclined lift in my property?

Don’t forget headroom heights So far we have looked at the footprint space required but we must also consider headroom heights. In particular the headroom height at the top landing will be a crucial measurement. Each lift manufacturer will have a minimum headroom requirement. This measurement is taken from the finished floor level at the top landing to the ceiling or first obstacle. The headroom requirement for a platform lift will usually be less than for a traditional style passenger lift.

The MC2000 and Inva Home Lift platform lifts require just 2230mm of headroom whereas the M6000 passenger lift requires 3540mm.

Some manufacturers can utilize a smaller door (1900mm high) to bring the headroom requirement down by 100mm.

If an inclined lift for a wheelchair was being considered to deal with a flight of stairs, then the two most critical dimensions would be the width of the stairs and the size of the landing zone (foot of the stairs). There are numerous sizes of platform available but again, the standard for wheelchair use is 1250mm long x 800mm deep for public access requirements. Sizes for private dwellings will vary but can be as small as 800mm x 800mm.

When considering any inclined lift the lift manufacturer will provide details of overall measurements depending on the way that the lift is installed including whether it is being wall mounted or stanchion mounted.

The Brimstone Hotel, Ambleside, Cumbria Beneath the imposing skyline of the Langdale Pikes lies the Brimstone Hotel. The hotel’s new development of 16 extra rooms called for spacious, high end designer balconies, which Q-railing were invited to create across two floors.

A single sheet of glass spans all 16 balconies – or so it appears… Glass fascias were the obvious choice for maximum light and visibility. However, traditional balustrades, often used to connect each glass sheet, would have interrupted the visual field. Easy Glass Slim® was specified to eliminate this problem.

The number one concern is the safety provided by the balconies, not just the aesthetics. The technical team calculated that the hotel’s balconies needed to take a line load of 0.74kN. Easy Glass Slim® can achieve a maximum line load of 1kN, so it was a balanced fit.

Q-railing specified a bottom mounted channel and 15mm of heatsoaked, toughened glass. Historically, toughened glass has been a concern for architects because on extremely rare occasions, spontaneous breakage can occur. To combat this all glass was heat-soak during manufacture. Therefore, any unfit glass is eliminated in the factories and never reaches the building site.

Easy Glass Slim®’s water drainage channel will protect the strength of the balconies over time and because water won’t pool, guests

will be able to use their balconies all year round.

The Brimstone’s contractors didn’t need to make fitting adjustments on-site. Easy Glass Slim® is manufactured so that all parts fit together neatly - installation of all 116 metres of balcony took just 2 weeks, with the glass taking only one day for each floor.

The balconies didn’t need to be installed until the end of the project as Q-railing manufacture a dry-fit system. This helped to avoid potential damage to materials as they didn’t need to be installed until wet work was complete.

Clean, neat lines brought an air of quality to the balconies. Thanks to precision engineering, the balconies matched the hotel’s attention to detail and chic interiors.

Valtavalo’s robotic manufacturing and testing process (pictured) is fully automated to eliminate quality variation. Each LED tube is subjected to an automated test of, among other things, its luminous intensity, colour temperature, colour rendition, spectrum, power factor, harmonic distortion and power consumption. In addition, the breakdown potential is tested in all products.

tube. This traceability enables customers to register their purchases and extend Valtavalo’s standard warranty of 5 years to a total of 7 years.

Valtavalo’s G3+ LED tube is also one of the first LED tubes on the market, which has been manufactured in accordance to the recent LED tube standard. The standard EN 62776, issued in December 2014, contains guidelines for ensuring the compatibility of different manufacturers’ LED tubes and harmonizing testing practices for market supervision.

At WorkClub, a media creative agency, we worked with architect John Nordon of IDE-Architects to design and produce a suspended system which combined cable distribution and lighting. The trunking system was suspended above the open work area and carried all power and comms cables. Light fittings could be positioned at any point in the top of the section giving a general uplight over the whole area with tracks and spots fitted into the sides to give flexible accent lighting to areas below and on the walls. Special outlet columns dropped power and IT cables down to the desktop in areas where workstations were clustered and for presentation spaces.

INDUSTRY news Bartlett retakes title of best university to study architecture

The Bartlett has returned to the top of The Guardian’s annual league of UK architecture schools The UCL’s faculty of the built environment, which had topped the newspaper’s rankings for three years in a row until it was knocked from top position by Cambridge last year, has once again returned to the top of the charts.

The London school was also rated second best place to study architecture in the world in a recent ranking by higher education data specialists QS. The top ten remains largely unchanged from 2015 and includes regulars the Welsh School of Architecture, Bath, and Sheffield School of Architecture, while last year’s chart topper Cambridge dropped down to fourth place.

Huddersfield has crept up nine places making a debut in the top ten and other schools making a significant improvement on last year’s ranking include Coventry, Newcastle, Kingston, and Anglia Ruskin, which shot up the list by 21 places.

New Urban Settlers Flock To Manchester’s Private Rented Sector For several decades, English cities enjoyed a pattern of incoming young professionals renting property, moving up the career ladder and then buying a home of their own. However, a woeful lack of housing, mortgages that are increasingly hard to obtain and rising prices have caused the pattern to change. Now, these New Urban Settlers move to the city, rent a property, climb the career ladder… then rent steadily more luxurious properties. For many, buying is simply out of the question.

Sprayed as a liquid Icynene expands to 100 times its initial volume in seconds filling every nook, cranny and penetration into walls, ceilings and floors.
