UK MEDIA BIAS IN ENERGY TRANSITION Rinnai’s Chris Goggin Investigates....

UK MEDIA BIAS IN ENERGY TRANSITION Rinnai’s Chris Goggin looks at some of the reasons why the UK media is favouring some energy vectors over others in the current era of transition to Decarbonisation and NetZero hydrogen usage with grey and blue hydrogen being used as decarbonizing stepping stones. However, according to various UK mainline media outlets, heat pumps are the only viable tool of decarbonisation. Although heat pumps will undeniably play a vital role in cutting harmful emissions, alternative avenues towards climate conscious energy usage are being overlooked by UK mainstream media outlets.

T

urbulent times produce added information which turns out to be not wholly true but more of a disguised agenda. We are all aware of the use and misuse of ‘Fake’ news and all of its companions. But we need to unite in our efforts to achieve decarbonisation as soon as it is pragmatic and realistic. UK consumers – plus contractors, consultants and all big commercial sites - should be aware that a strong international preference towards hydrogen is evident by the sheer level of international investment and that it is under reported by mainstream media outlets. Multiple major economies, distribution hubs and global companies are working towards future green

Instead of truly reporting on all feasible alternatives, mainstream media prefers to push decarbonizing technology that appears to be more financially compatible with their respective socio-economic audiences. Extraordinarily little is mentioned of hydrogen and when cited the subject is often treated with disparagement. A lack of manufacturing capacity, safety issues and consumer cost are the three main motivations behind this limited reportage. If this is the case what is being done to amend these concerns within the emerging hydrogen industry? At present there are three prominent variations of hydrogen that are being manufactured: grey, blue and green. This colour scheme correlates to production methods which themselves infer to the amount of carbon releases for each are responsible.

96% of currently globally produced hydrogen is generated through fossil fuels. The easiest form of hydrogen to manufacture is grey hydrogen which is produced via a process called SMR – steam methane reforming. Heat and pressure are applied in natural gas which then converts its methane properties into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Blue hydrogen occurs when carbon collected during steam reforming is stored underground. This process is called carbon capture and storage (CCUS). In a generous light this variation of hydrogen can be labelled “carbon neutral” however a more accurate description would be “low carbon” as up to 10% - 20% of carbon, can be potentially released into the atmosphere. Recent technological advancements in this area are responsible for CCUS potentially entering a new era. New hydrogen manufacturing plants will employ alternative technology Autothermal Reforming (ATR) which allows for capture of up to 96% - 97% of all emissions. Carbon capture and storage is an area the UK government is keen to accelerate. Blue hydrogen projects that require funding can access government provided finances through the £240 million NetZero Hydrogen Fund (NZHF). Additionally, a Carbon Capture Storage Infrastructure Fund (CIF) was first announced during the Budget, March 2020. Allo-

cation of £1 billion of state funding for the CIF was confirmed at the November 2020 spending review. Major international companies such as Shell are currently involved in multiple CCUS endeavours more notably in Canada, Norway and Australia. Shell is a partner in the Australian Gorgon Liquefied Natural Gas Project. Once completed this will be the biggest CCUS operation in the world and will be capable of capturing up to four million tonnes of CO2 a year. Shell’s Quest project in Canada is a fully operational CCUS facility. The governments of Alberta and Canada have invested $745 million and $120 million respectively. Shell hopes that the positive results yielded from this project will further encourage other CCUS technolog y to be implemented internationally. Green hydrogen is 100% carbon neutral and therefore the preferred fuel of the future. Green hydrogen is produced when renewable resources like wind, hydro or solar power are used to power an electrolyzer that sits in a huge drum of water. This process is called electrolysis, which extrapolates hydrogen from oxygen atoms in water. The only excess substance remaining is water zapped of its hydrogen content. Because no fossil fuels are used in the creation of green hydrogen, carbon neutrality is completely feasible. Individual sectors such as transport and home heating are aware of green hydrogen’s climate credentials and are keen to begin utilizing the alternative fuel source. What is holding back green hydrogen usage then? Producing green

hydrogen is dependent on earth’s natural resources. Some seasons yield more positive results than others. Then there is cost. At present green hydrogen is not cost competitive with grey hydrogen which is easier to manufacture. Six percent of global natural gas consumption can be traced to grey hydrogen production. Next generation electrolyzers are being designed with greater capacity for efficiency and the cost of renewables are declining. In coming years, with further advancements in these areas green hydrogen will become commercially abundant and viable. In making this possible an EU funding spree hopes to create a European value chain in green hydrogen electrolyzers. Multiple funding projects will be cleared as part of the one billion Euros European Green Deal. It is believed that 25 – 30 million Euros will substantiate each individual project. Every venture must demonstrate a sizable energy and decarbonizing contribution to either the industrial, transport or domestic heating sector. Advancing electrolyzer and ATR CCUS technology will see the cost of blue and green hydrogen decrease, whilst manufacturing capacity and demand will increase. Grey hydrogen production and therefore any need for fossil fuel consumption will gradually shrivel away. Aspects of health and safety are another issue which restricts hydrogen’s appeal in UK media outlets. Hydrogen has been undergoing testing and re-testing for many years for commercial opportunities to become apparent. FutureGrid is a project set up to create a demonstrative gas transmission network which allows for a wide range of safety tests to be carried out and analysed. Once constructed, FutureGrid’s transmission net work will be capable of facilitating a range of tests on 20% hydrogen gas blends to 100% pure hydrogen. Analysis

will focus on gas behaviour and interaction within the constructed infrastructure. All testing will be adjudicated by the Health and Safety Executive who will decide on the feasibility of domestic and commercial hydrogen consumption. Construction will potentially begin on the £10 million project in 2021 with tests being carried out later in 2022. A vast amount of funding and proactive thought is being placed into the advancement of hydrogen. Work is underway on producing next generation electrolyzers and CCUS technology that will help push hydrogen to the forefront of international energy options. Updated technology will assist in increasing manufacturing capacity whilst driving bulk prices of blue and green hydrogen down. Major UK media outlets however fail to deliver this information and instead focus on either alarmist editorials designed to shock, or present only one technological decarbonizing option. The entire world has set its sights on future hydrogen usage. Why we hear next to nothing is due to media bias that stems from potential advertising revenue aimed at a target demographic. UK end users need to know that hydrogen is a global target not a conceptual ambition. In the coming years multiple decarbonizing technology options will be available. The only reason this isn’t widely reported is down to current personalized media agendas held by mainstream media outlets.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF COMPOSITE FIRE DOORS

The award-winning Guardsman Fire Door from ODL Europe is a gamechanger for the composite fire door sector and gives architects and specifiers the fire safety credentials they are looking for. ODL Europe’s Technical Manager Ian Glenister explains.

For architects and specifiers specifying a fire door for a project, the requirement on the face of it is simple: it must deliver the required level of fire protection. But beneath that headline requirement, there are a wealth of other factors at play. For example, the door should have shown consistency over a range of test results and across a range of door manufacturers. Only then, can there be the confidence that the composite fire door has been truly specified and holds the necessary credentials when it comes to the door’s performance and stability. Our mission at ODL Europe is to build value into building products. So, when we started to develop a 30-minute composite fire door two years ago, our aim was simple: a door that eliminated the unknown elements of a composite fire door’s

•10•

performance and delivered tried and tested, consistent test results. In other words, a fire door that was a gamechanger for the sector. We partnered with the engineers at our partners Capstone, the world-leading supplier of composite door slabs, and a select number of experienced fire door manufacturers who shared our ambitions. And we set the bar high. Any 30-minute fire door we brought to the market would need to pass the European fire test standard of EN 1634, which is the more onerous test standard required by Part B of Building Regulations. We could have relied on British Standard test evidence, but while this ticks all the boxes legally, we knew it doesn’t take a door out

of its comfort zone so wouldn’t meet the standards we had set for ourselves. We also needed to eliminate the phenolic foam that forms the core of an industry-standard 30-minute composite fire door. We knew a solid core was the way forward and the material we are using is Agrifiber. It is a board material made from resinbonded agricultural fibres and is a renewable source so has good environmental credentials. Unlike a foam, it is capable of delivering very consistent material densities and at the right density it has both superb structural properties and excellent fire resistance. The result of our sixfigure development investment is the Guardsman Composite Fire Door.

It has been tested in glazed and unglazed versions. It has also been tested across multiple manufacturers. And in the most recent tests to EN 1634, we have achieved an average of 100% overrun past the 30-minute mark. At the extreme, our 30-minute Guardsman fire door achieved over 70 minutes. The doors have been tested as part of a doorset including our TriSYS glazing cassette and a TS008 letterplate. They have reached test ratings they have never achieved before, which demonstrates the importance of the solid core in the construction. Of course, while safety is rightly the first priority for a fire door, day-to-day practicalities also matter. As a Capstone door it has hardwood stiles and rails and a 2mm GRP skin. It means it has all the pedigree you would expect from a composite door developed by a manufacturer with Capstone’s credentials. It is a durable and robust door that is virtually maintenance-free and more than capable of withstanding the realities of everyday use while still maintaining a good-looking appearance. We believe the Guardsman Fire Door is the first in the next generation of composite fire doors, a generation that delivers better, more reliable protection in the event of fire, and it would seem the industry agrees. The Guardsman Composite Fire door was voted Best New Product of the Year at the prestigious G21 Awards. The credentials and outstanding performance of the Guardsman Fire Door were notable qualities that impressed the G Awards judges: “Achieving a 30-minute fire door with both glazing, a letterplate and with PAS 24:2016 performance is remarkable.” So, for architects and specifiers looking to work with the best in composite fire doors, then the award-winning Guardsman Composite Fire Door by ODL Europe offers the credentials and fire safety needed. EUROCELL MODUS

FILLS BATH WITH LIGHT “The foil gives an appearance like timber and the colour palette includes the heritage type colours that fit in with a period environment such as Bath,” comments Paul.

H

eritage colours and kerbside appeal were among the factors that persuaded the planning authorities of Bath that Modus PVC-U windows from Eurocell – the UK’s leading manufacturer, distributor and recycler of window, door, conservatory and roofline products – were the appropriate alternative to timber on a prime, exposed location near the UNESCO World Heritage Site. “The planners originally wanted timber windows but that wouldn’t work for our designs because we wanted to install matching fascias and soffits that fitted beneath considerable eaves. This is on an exposed site at the top of a steep hill so they wouldn’t look great for very long,” explains Paul Baker, Regional Managing Director for Bloor Homes South West. “Timber windows, fascias and soffits would require expensive maintenance because of the scaffolding required to paint them. These PVC-U alternatives not only have kerb-appeal but are maintenance-free”. Bloor Homes South West had also had experience of the product at other developments throughout the region and had found it answered planning department concerns. It worked with the Eurocell New Build division, which supplied four samples to show the various colours that might work on site and to demonstrate the slim, timber-like sight lines of the Modus system.

•12•

Once the Bath and North East Somerset planning department was happy with Bloor’s proposal to use Modus windows in Hazy Grey, it gave the go-ahead for the same product range, but in Agate Grey, to be used at an adjacent development from the other housebuilder. BBA certified to function satisfactorily for more than 35 years, the Modus range has a U-value of 1.2 W/m² using 4/20/4 mm sealed double-glazed units. This effective thermal performance is due to the 75mm six-chamber profile system used in the Modus that enables the range to achieve a U-value as low as 0.7 by installing triple-glazed units.

Consisting of 50% post-consumer recycled PVC-U as standard, this range of doors and windows has a smaller carbon footprint than products made or recycled outside of the UK. Eurocell achieves this by employing dual material extrusion technolog y (DMET) that layers post-consumer recycled and ‘virgin’ material simultaneously, so the recycled material is concentrated in the central core of the profiles where it cannot be seen once the door or window is installed. Read the full story here or visit Eurocell.co.uk for more information on how Eurocell can help with your next project.

Knauf continue to improve sustainability credentials with recycled plastic packaging As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, Knauf UK & Ireland is making the move to recycled plastic packaging. Its new packaging will contain at least 30% recycled plastics and is often also recyclable at the end of its life so the circle can be continued.

T

he Company has added easy to recognise logos to the packaging to identify when it has been made from recycled plastic, and if it is recyclable. Knauf will start by changing the packaging of key products within its portfolio and continue the move for other products over the coming months. The Company is using Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastics – materials which have been used by consumers, recycled and given a new life. Lucy Hall, Sustainability Leader for Knauf, gives an insight into the importance of the new packaging: “Our Product Manager, Becky Newell, has worked collaboratively and consistently to achieve Knauf’s goal of improving the recycled content of our packaging. Realising her goal to make a difference on a bigger scale, the recycled content of plastic packaging will now also be high on the agenda of new product development. This is a fantastic achievement in Knauf’s drive to fulfil its sustainability goals” Greenhouse gas emissions are associated with single-use plastics, and the National Geography Society estimates that more than 40% of plastic is used just once and that there are more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean. This is a significant reason for Knauf adopting PCR plastics and a recognition of the Company’s commitment to Build for the World We Live In. This switch will see some small changes to the appearance of product packaging, such as a grey rim and base. This is simply due to a number of different coloured plastics being recycled to make a new product, and not adding in unnecessary dyes. It is important to note that it is just the packaging that is changing, not the product, so customers can rest assured knowing they’re still getting the same, trusted Knauf product.

•14•

This move is part of Knauf’s ongoing sustainability initiative and ties in with its ‘people, planet, prosperity’ ethos. Sustainability considerations are becoming more prevalent across the construction industry and Knauf is keen to lead the way in meeting customers’ expectations for environmentally friendly products.

Crittall’s Innervision range of steel-framed glazed internal fixed screens and doors for fire rated applications. •20•

A

larmingly, annually in the UK there are around 200 fire-related deaths and some 37,000 house fires. It’s a no brainer ensuring you do all you can to reduce the risk of firerelated incidents in your home. “More people are fitting fire-rated (FR) doors in their homes as they want to feel safer and be reassured should a fire occur. Along with installing smoke detector alarms, and checking your electrical wiring and appliances are safe, also ensure your home has fire-rated interior doors,” says Russell Ager, managing director at Crittall Windows.

HIGHLY RATED The enhancement of the leading range of internal screens and doors has been achieved while preserving the unique slender steel profile, which is the hallmark of Crittall products, and now sets InnervisionFR apart from other bulkier fire rated systems. The FR doors and fixed lights seamlessly blend with an almost identical appearance, with the added benefit of peace of mind in the home. Created to achieve transmission of light throughout a home’s internal living and homeworking spaces, InnervisionFR provides a combination of bespoke and modular options with high performance fire rated glazing and an extensive range of traditional or contemporary hardware. The system matches Crittall’s Corporate W20 external windows and doors, reflecting the timeless style of a period house or the contemporary feel of on-trend industrial styles. While enhanced acoustic properties effectively keep noise at bay – a welcome attribute for homeowners with an office, work-out room or entertainment zone/cinema. Available in any RAL or BS colour, InnervisionFR can be supplied as fixed screens, single or double leaf hinged doors, and is hot dip galvanized making it virtually maintenance free.

“They can save lives, prevent injury, protect against fire spreading by containing it, and the smoke and toxic gases emitted. An effective barrier against flames, FR doors provide invaluable – potentially life-saving minutes - in the event of a burning room and having to evacuate a property; they help reduce fire damage too.” Crittall’s InnerVision range of glazed internal fixed screens and doors can now be specified for fire rated applications. The steel-framed system is compliant with BS476 Part 22 providing 30 minutes (FD30) integrity fire resistance.

MODULAR CONSTRUCTION MARKET KEY SEALANT TAPE GROWTH, SAYS ISO CHEMIE The modular house construction market will help to drive window and door foam sealant tape growth in 2022, predicts Andy Swift, sales and operations manager for ISO-Chemie. He sees the UK market staying buoyant over the next 12 months as the economy continues to recover from the pandemic and building and construction activity remains busy, particular in the face of a chronic national housing shortage and the need to build more affordable housing. This will see construction projects ‘surge’ ahead with cost effective products such as foam sealant tapes, which deliver improved energy performance and efficiencies, increasingly specified for retrofit applications and new projects. In the modular sector, house designers are currently looking at new ways to deliver low carbon structures, which use sustainable technologies to deliver measurable airtight, acoustic and thermal sealing benefits. 2021 has been the best ever trading year for the ISO Chemie - sales are up 45% - and Andy Swift says the modular construction market will be a key target for further growth going forward over the next 12 months. “Modular construction is gaining increasing traction and next year will see continued integration of the system with the more traditional methods of building, enabling developers to bring forward housing projects more expediently,” he adds. “Our ISO BLOCO range of sealant tapes and the WINFRAMER thermal insulating and load bearing bracket support system can add real value during the initial and post construction phases, so I expect to see more interest in these and other products in 2022 and beyond.” Andy Swift also points out that the amendment to the building regulations currently coming into

•22•

force are set to have an impact as energy ratings for buildings and property become stricter proposed changes to Part L 2021 lay out a government roadmap to zero carbon and future homes standard. These include energy and ventilation standards for residential and non-domestic buildings that are far better for the environment and fit for the future, says Andy Swift, who adds: “Higher air and thermal standards for house construction will be a priority. This is an important message that will continued to be pushed to architects and other property specifiers over the next 12 months.

With energy rated and conservation products continuing to be at the forefront of design and building regulations, there will be ‘discernible’ growth for air tightness and thermal sealing products. “There are effective products out there to ensure that airtightness and thermal efficiency within buildings should never be overlooked or ignored - it’s a matter of designing in these products,” Andy Swift says. THE SUSSEX RANGE As we move forward into 2022 we would like to draw your attention to the two new products launching this January.

F

irstly we have extended the Black Edition Range to include The Newick 1000, a horizontal rail, popular as a statement within the bathroom but also fits easily below most windows. The Newick measures 600 high by 1000mm wide and retails at £299.80 exclusive of VAT. We have also introduced the profile valve in Black to the Black Edition. Designed to complement the black edition rails these valves will not protrude into the room and sit neatly within the rail visually enhancing the product. The valves are brass and powder coated with a good solid weight. The Black Edition as always is manufactured from 100% stainless steel and then powder coated with a matt black finish. Further ehancing the Sussex Range yet at the same time fitting within the environmental ethos of the Company.

•24•

As we move into 2022 and the challenges that continue to face us, we would like to take this opportunity to reiterate our policy of stockholding and how it is driving our company forward. ‘Last summer we saw widespread disruption to supply and many assumed by now these issues would have ironed themselves out. In fact they have worsened. Most of our competitors are still looking at long lead times. We are able to maintain the chain of supply due to our longstanding policy of stockholding which has provided further financial stability to ourselves but as importantly to our customers” “More and more people are coming round to the durability and sustainability of stainless steel, particularly after the year we have just had, we all need to be aware of our environmental and social impact” “On a prac tical note our customer s don ’ t want to go to the expense and disruption of fit ting out their bathroom to 2 years down the line find that an inferior mild steel rail rusts, leaks and they then need a complete re-tile when the replacement isn’t dimensionally identical to the original”

Stainless steel is 100% recyclable, and manufactured from over 90% recyclable material. It does not rust, flake or corrode. It is the sustainable, durable choice. We source our rails ethically and take our social responsibility seriously, from our sourcing, to our manufacture, to our charity initiatives. As a stable business with long term stockholding that has maintained a steady supply throughout the pandemic we are able to do all of this whilst protecting our pricing structure. We offer 3 formats of rail throughout the entire range: Electric, dual fuel and central heating only and we offer both a polished and satin finish as well as the Black Edition Range. “The cornerstones of our business are quite simply quality, stock holding and ultimately customer service. The three work hand in hand” Should you require further details please visit our website www.sussexrange.co.uk or contact us on 01825 722988 and info@jiseurope.co.uk

2022 SMART HOME DESIGN TRENDS FROM GIRA Gira, global leader and supplier of intelligent system solutions for the connected home and building, unveils the latest automated systems and technologies to enhance your home in 2022… “The last two years have seen us all spend more time at home and so it’s no surprise that we want to make our personal interior spaces as comfortable and versatile as possible. This is where the “connected home” has come to the fore, equipping the modern home with smart functions and devices that are specifically designed to improve daily life and contribute to a more efficient household” says Jacob de Muijnck, Managing Director at Gira UK Ltd. In fact, UK consumers are now very familiar with smart TVs, fitness trackers, voice-activated assistants and 24/7 access to all kinds of media, and this has become part of everyday life as the features and benefits appeal to multiple generations. The global health crisis and inevitable after effects have only highlighted that we need reliable systems in order to stay in touch with the outside world anytime, anywhere. With this in mind Gira present four key smart home trends that are set to redefine the idea of a ‘connected home’ next year and beyond:

1. The home office that thinks for itself Fewer people leave their house to go work in 2020 and the concept of working from home has become increasingly mainstream, but digital tools and services alone are not enough to maintain a high level of productivity. A home office requires a healthy, well considered environment that keeps you focused and motivated and so premium manufacturers are creating innovative solutions for the connected home office. Innovations include clever chairs and desks reminding you to stand up, multifunctional charging stations for mobile devices and smart lighting and blind systems that adjust room

brightness according to the time of day or work discipline under way.

1. Smart appliances for easy living From stoves that won’t let anything burn to bathrooms that know how you like to shower in the morning – intelligent technologies make life safer, easier

and more energy-efficient. Automated vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and dryers are only the first steps towards a connected home in 2022, with indoor greenhouses becoming increasingly popular as we bring the outdoors in. More and more, smart devices are compatible with IFTTT (“If this then that”) technology, which makes it easy to configure individual systems where products from different

manufacturers need to work in sync. For example, you can switch off multiple electric appliances with just one command before stepping outside – to save energy and prevent accidental short circuits.

1. Connected Smart Home concepts are in demand Single, standalone applications are giving way to sustainable all-inclusive solutions as architects and builders consider the digital infrastructure and connectivity of living spaces early on in the planning phase. Lights, blinds, heating, entertainment systems, security systems, home gyms and electronics, along with smart tools and appliances, can be controlled via one central unit in connected homes adding luxury and touch of design exclusivity. Connected living is easy to facilitate whether you want to build a new house, renovate your existing, or just rent an apartment. Wireless systems such as Gira eNet SMART HOME communicate via radio transmitter – which means they can be retrofitted in both old and new buildings. Thanks to a synchronised interplay of all components, your Smart Home will do exactly what you need at any given time. Smart sensors, for example, react automatically to external factors such as ambient brightness, temperature, or humidity levels. Jacob adds “Many digital services and applications are already indispensable to modern lives like Alexa light control via voice command to blinds that go up automatically at sunrise. Smart technology will become even more universal in the years to come so be futureready with a connected house (or apartment). Once you’ve installed your system, you can add all sorts of functions and devices whenever you want so your home can evolve with your lifestyle.”

Since March 2015, the Gira interactive online magazine G-Pulse has been providing regular, up-to-theminute information on interesting developments in multiple areas: smart home technology, interior design, lifestyle, trends and architecture. The online magazine is your source for interior design and lifestyle inspiration

In October the Government announced that from April 2022 households will be offered subsidies of £5,000 to help them make the move to low carbon heat-pumps when their boiler needs replacing. As a result of this news there has been an increased interest in Electric Heating, with many looking at it as an alternative to their gas heating. And with the UK setting a target of 2050 to be carbon neutral or net-zero, the interest will only grow.

which involve burning fossil fuels.

COP26 has been on the mouths and minds of many in the last few weeks, with world leaders coming together to help inspire climate change.

Electric boilers can be powered from renewable energy resources e.g. solar power, resources such as solar power are completely free from CO2 emissions which are helping to move towards the target of net zero emissions!

Net Zero is a term which has become more prominent and is something that the Electric Heating Company is helping to work towards. Governments are working towards a mid-century target of net-zero emissions, this means phasing out more traditional heating methods

•28•

EHC recognise the growing demand for heating and hot water solutions that are both sustainable and ecofriendly, and are proud to say that all of our products are designed with this in mind.

In the UK alone the government intend to generate emission-free electricity by 2050, only last year they pledged 40GW of windgenerated electricity in the UK by 2030. This is enough to power every single household in the United Kingdom.

Moving to a renewable energy tariff with Electric Heating means that you’re moving to carbon-free heating which in turn helps towards a sustainable and renewable future. The Electric Heating Company are one of the foremost suppliers of electric heating and hot water products in the UK since 2005. Our product knowledge and support is unrivalled in the heating and hot water industry.

UNDERSTANDING HEAT MANAGEMENT IN MODERN HEARTH DESIGN

With their timeless appeal and dancing flames, fireplaces have the potential to transform a space, regardless of design aesthetic. But that remarkable design dexterity comes with another, sometimes unwelcome, sensory effect: heat.

Fortunately, architects and interior designers can modulate heat in a project. John Shimek, a researchand-development team leader for the Lakeville, Minn.–based fireplace manufacturer Heat & Glo, is an expert in heat science. Over the years, Shimek and his team have made advances in the form and function of gas and electric fireplaces, including developments in heat mitigation.

passive. Both approaches can be engineered to create an abovehearth wall environment that is friendly to heat-sensitive electronics or furnishings: •

Weighing Electric or Gas LED f lames from an elec tric fireplace virtually eliminate heat issues. “Think of the heat from an electric fireplace as roughly equivalent to a small space heater,” Shimek says. Elec tric hear ths play especially well in net-zero energy projects and all-electric communities. The on- demand control of an LED flame is a logical extension of the digital lifestyle, and its non-structural design affords designers and installers wide latitude to confidently create hearth effects anywhere in a residential or commercial structure. For gas-fueled hearth applications, Shimek says heat management takes one of two forms: active and

•30•

Active. This mechanical, fanassisted technology actively draws heat from the fireplace, transferring it through ducts to another room or out of the building. “Removing up to 70% of the heat is comparatively easy,” Shimek advises. Some gas hearths are capable of extracting close to 90% of the heat. “You can put your hand on the glass and it’s just slightly warm to the touch, even after it ’s been operational for an hour,” he says. Passive. This increasingly common approach disperses heat w i t hou t me chanic al intervention and cost. Instead, passive applies thermodynamic principles to heat transfer through pre-planned ducts that efficiently channel heat above or to the side of the hearth. “Passive is definitely gaining marketplace traction,” Shimek says.

A corollar y to both strategies is right-sizing the hearth to the space. “Most of our appliances, for example, can be throttled back roughly 50% of their maximum BTU output,” Shimek says. “A calculation using room height and square feet can determine the optimum BTUs per cubic feet. That’s why we offer two or three versions of each fireplace model. Each represents the same footprint and design. The only difference is BTU output.” Plan Early Shimek hints more heat control innovation is on the way, uniting “the best of active and passive systems for an even better user experience.” Today, modern hearth technology frees architects and designers from constraints that once limited specification, including the question of unwanted or excessive heat. The key to any heat mitigation strateg y is early engagement with the manufac turer or a fireplace distributor. “Heat is easily managed,” Shimek says. “It’s just a question of anticipating it early in the design.”

BUCKING THE TREND IN A DIFFICULT YEAR FOR THE COMMERCIAL INTERIORS INDUSTRY Chameleon Business Interiors – a Yorkshire -based interior design, fit-out and furnishing business, specialising in commercial buildings – has been operating internationally for over 2 0 years. The interior design and fit-out industry has experienced a lot of challenges during this time, but none more so than in the last two years. As the sector continues to negotiate supply chain delays, inflated material costs and a national labour shortage, Shaun Watts – chairman of Chameleon - shares his reflections from the last 12 months, makes his predictions for the year ahead, and offers insight into the plans to secure continued growth. It has certainly been a challenging time for our industry, and it’s incredibly sad to see firms in our sector close their doors recently. No one knew what to expect as we entered 2021. If you believed everything you heard at the time, you’d think that the office working

•34•

model was dead and that we’d all be working from home permanently. Indeed, 2021 saw a slow-down in our Canadian business, despite delivering several projects successfully due to our strong management based in Toronto. But, overall, I’m very grateful and humbled that we have bucked the trend, starting 2021 on the back of the growth and success of 2020. We secured a number of large and complex contracts early on, with clients that took a long-term view to workspaces: they wanted to think creatively, design spaces their employees wanted to return to, and prioritise collaborative and safe working. As a result, we doubled our turnover and we have our innovative and hard-working team to thank for that. I also saw clients’ confidence in us grow because we’ve continued to invest and recruit. But I do recognise that we represent a small proportion of companies that emerged from 2021 in a strong position.

2022: industry predictions As we look ahead to 2022, I believe that: •

Sustainability will continue to influence everything we do. Carbon neutral buildings will become more important to occupiers and we’re even seeing projects that are aiming to be carbon negative. It’s a phenomenal purchasing mindset shift.

Employee wellbeing is absolutely front-of-mind; the pandemic has focused everyone on this and they’re now investing significantly in their workspaces. It should be about putting people first and really considering how existing spaces can be maximised for the people that use it.

Safe yet sociable hubs that enable collaborative working is essential for the return to office-based working. The workplace has changed forever and we have seen this new model work well in 2021.

Reducing the office footprint is not the right approach – you can’t expect employees to live their whole career in their bedroom. There’s limited personal development opportunities with this model and it’s short-termism, in my view.

British manufacturing has an opportunity to really thrive – with all of the delays and inflated costs we’re experiencing importing materials and furniture into the UK, now is the time for British manufacturing to make its mark.

2022: industry challenges

Chameleon’s 2022

In terms of challenges this year, I predict we’ll be looking at: •

The skills gap presenting us with ongoing difficulties – recruitment across the sector has been very difficult and there isn’t a large talent pool out there. To combat this, we need to be offering more opportunities to those entering the industry and enabling them to develop long-lasting and fulfilling careers not just ‘jobs’. Cost continuing to impact our sustainability goals – unfortunately, doing the right thing comes at a price. If

we’re ever going to move the needle, we need to find some way to appease both clients’ budgets and the sustainability agenda. •

Motivating staff after a very busy few years becoming a bigger challenge – this is a challenge faced by businesses all over the world. The last two years have been stressful and we’ve all been working very hard. So this year will be the ‘Year of Fun’ for the team at Chameleon to give the team the opportunity to bond and have fun together again. It’s been well overdue!

The year has begun well, with a number prestigious projects already on site across country that we’re all very excited about and new projects in design stage. With the addition of new talent and expertise to the business, we anticipate the size and complexity of our projects continuing to grow. Acquisition will be part of our growth strategy in 2022, and I am actively looking for the right opportunity. We have some ambitious targets to meet that will stretch us all but we are up for the challenge. The infrastructure and talent we now have in place gives us the strength in depth to support our growth ambitions over the coming year.

THE GOLDEN RULES

TO SELLING YOUR HOUSE FAST AND WELL Preparing your home for viewings is difficult, especially when you still have to live in it whilst it’s on the market, or when you may have outgrown your current property and have a lot of furniture and belongings. Kebbell’s Andrea Fawell gives her golden rules and tips on how to enhance your home to speed up the process and get a good sale offer.

1.

Get in the right mindset. Think of the house you are putting on the market as no longer your home as soon as you sign with an estate agent. It may feel counter intuitive spending money on doing up your home and not enjoying those benefits yourselves, but improvements such as new carpets do help with quicker sales and in some cases renovations and updates will increase the value of the property so will pay for themselves.

2. Sell at the right price from the outset because whilst you want to maximise what you can get for your property; you don’t want to keep lowering the price because you had unrealistic expectations initially. Lowering the price several times makes it look like there are underlying problems with the house and it

•36•

will become unappealing if seen to be taking a long time to sell. 3. Have all your paper work to hand including planning permissions and building control for any extensions. It can hugely speed up the process and will avoid problems and delays that could turn off potential buyers. 4. Pay attention to detail. The mar ket is al way s highl y competitive which means you need to do more to make sure your proper t y stands out. Keep the house tidy, make sure windows and carpets are clean, jet-wash the patio and front drive, give a fresh lick of paint to every room, re-carpet if needed and re-grout the bathroom. Do a nose test for pet smells and the kids football kit in the utility room or wherever they end up!

5. D e c lu t te r, d e c lu t te r a n d d e c l u t t e r. T h a t i n c l u d e s wardrobes and cupboards (potential buyers do look in them), the garage, shed, loft and hallways. 6. Sustainability is increasingly imp or t ant . Ener g y pro of your house. Check that your insulation is up to standard and if you can, install solar panels and/or ground source heat pumps to give your home an edge. Everyone now asks about electric car charging so think about where one could be installed on your property. 7.

Appeal to the masses. Make sure your home feels w e l c o m i n g a n d h o m e l y. At Osborne House we are attracting all sorts of different buyers from downsizers to young couples, so we have to

bear this in mind in how we present the show home, so it appeals to everyone. A neutral contemporary colour scheme is often desirable because over personalisation can put buyers off. Put away any overly quirky personal possessions. 8. Renovate your kitchen. The most ‘valuable’ room per square foot in a home is the kitchen. Consider painting or replacing your kitchen cabinet doors, upgrading counter tops and boxing in any pipes. 9. Add off-street parking. Councils continue to reduce parking availability so capitalise on this by converting your front garden into a driveway. This will be particularly beneficial if your home is in an area where parking is known to be difficult. 10. Keep each room light and bright to make them feel fresher, warmer and more inviting. Take advantage of the natural

light that fills each room where possible or brighten darker rooms by installing spotlights, lamps or fairy lights. 11. Re-vamp your garden. Tidy the garden, weed the drive and give your home curb appeal. If you can, add luxury touches in the garden such as quality decking, a firepit or BBQ area, a pizza oven or maybe even a summer house. Re-vamping your garden and offering additional living space can increase your home’s value, making it more desirable to potential buyers. Now more than ever, buyers are looking for an inviting garden space. 12. Update your bathroom(s). Make sure your home has both a shower and a bath to appeal to ever yone. Modernising your bathrooms to feel more luxurious and tranquil can help generate serious interest in your property. Think about replacing your shower curtain with a glass screen, installing a

power shower and underfloor heating or a heated towel rail. 13. Move up. Expand your home by adding a loft conversion, ideally adding another bedroom and bathroom to the proper t y thereby moving it into the next size band and adding value to your home. Whilst extensions are costly, they are particularly desirable for smaller homes in built-up areas. 14. Apply for planning permission. If you don’t want to do the e x te n si o n o r co n v e r si o n your s el f hav ing planning permission for an extension in place before you put your property on the market can give you an advantage especially if your home has not been renovated recentl y. Many buyers look for homes that have the potential to extend to add more space.

HOME STAGER’S TOP DIY INTERIOR TRENDS FOR A 2022 TRANSFORMATION Elaine Penhaul - interiors expert and owner of award-winning, national home staging company Lemon and Lime Interiors - gives her top tips for DIY and interior trends that are sure to make an appearance this year. Elaine said: “I see the DIY trends of 2022 for the most part being a continuation of the rising popularity of traditional crafting skills since lockdowns begin - utilising the materials that are already at their disposal. Those who have persisted have developed their skills and their creative style but are looking to challenge themselves further to create more stunning interior decorations.”

Patterns and Textures “When we think of the latest style, a crucial element is of course hue and character. A good cornerstone of trends for next year is to incorporate the colour ‘Very Peri’ - Pantone’s colour of the year for 2022 - into furnishings and accents throughout the home. Very Peri - a new shade of periwinkle blue - aims to create a ‘dynamic presence’ and ‘encourage courageous creativity’ and is seen as a colour that reflects the shift towards digital and virtual worlds. Combining Very Peri with traditional crafts and DIY methods is a sure-fire way to decorate your interiors with the past and future in mind while living in the present. “The knotted rope art of Macramé has surged in popularity since 2020

•38•

and I expect it to continue doing so. With endless opportunities for experimentation and creating your unique style, it is a joyful creative hobby to learn. It can be used to hang plants and suspend mirrors. Incorporating Macramé grows the sense of verticality to a room, enabling plants in particular to feel more alive within the room instead of being perched on a shelf. “Earthy tones are replacing greys in 2022, with ceramics leading the way in this trend. Give old plant pots a new lease of life inside the home. From utensil holders to light fixtures or maybe even a side table from a larger pot, they are a great canvas to decorate upon, whether using paints or adding a tile mosaic design to bring in hints of vibrancy on top of the neutral tones.”

Accents of Interest

into 2022, providing a simplistic and neutral look which could be created at home with the right tools or kit.

“In addition, it’s good to consider the focal points and decor in your home. We are seeing more people buying pottery wheels, due to the success of The Great Pottery Throw Down on TV and having a spin at their own creations. Concrete plant pots were likewise a popular feature in anyone’s home this year and it is a trend I see continuing

“Planters in a wooden stand were also everywhere this year and I don’t see them going anywhere soon as we head to the New Year. They are great for providing some more height to a plant or providing that statement piece to transform any area in your home and they can be made easily with some wood and the right equipment.

“The Japandi trend combines the unique qualities of conventional Japanese and Scandinavian interior design choice to create a simplistic and decluttered environment that favours natural and sustainable materials. Reclaimed wood has great potential to be incorporated this way, with uses for both inside and out the home. Using pallets can be used in a multitude of ways to arrange and decorate. Upholster with neutral tone materials to create seating areas or bed boards, or arrange vertically to be used as dividers for open-plan homes.”

Spruce up the Space “Rethinking the overall feel of a room or space in your home is also a good move for 2022. DIY wall panelling is a fantastic way to add depth to your walls – whether in whole or sections – and is a great way to stay on trend this year. You can buy ready-made panelling that can be easily fitted at the height you desire, usually by fixing a vertical baton between panels on the

back, which is then fixed securely to the wall. “Vertical slat panelling is also popular and easy to fit. You can do this by buying timber strips and fixing them to the wall at both the top and bottom of the panels. If you want to go for a polished, painted look then make sure you paint the panels before fixing them - you can create a 3D effect by painting the wall a different colour to the wood. “Airy garden rooms to congregate with friends and family will be taken up by more and more people in 2022, with people possibly living in these spaces earlier in the year than previous as they fight for secluded spots in the home. These rooms are the starting point for biophilic design to grow out to other rooms. It’s a great place to incorporate vases with lighting to bring to life the surrounding green hues from real houseplants, which will only become denser indoors, and can be easily created.”

Finishing Touches “There are of course simple elements that just add a little extra. Something as simple as a glass jar has become a big trend recently. So, if you have ever kept a particular jar or bottle because it is too nice to throw away then now is your time to pull them out of the cupboard and get onboard this trend. Depending on the size, you can use them as a vase for a bunch of flowers, fill them will pebbles, soil and a cactus to make a glass plant pot, or even put in some fairy lights to give a cosy feel to your home. “Personalisation is also key to 2022. Personal touches make a house a home and can easily be made if you turn your hand to knitting and stitching. Embroidery can easily be achieved, and you can get kits and patterns to match the look that you are after. Once completed, these can be hung in the home as a piece of art or placed on a feature shelf to add that finishing homely touch to be right on trend in 2022.”
