RINNAI N SERIES LIMITLESS HOT WATER UNITS ‘HYDROGEN BLEND READY’ NOW

Rinnai N Series Limitless Hot Water Units ‘Hydrogen Blend Ready’ NOW Hot water heating unit and system manufacturer Rinnai has announced that, after an extensive testing and verification process, its current Sensei N Series range is ‘Hydrogen ready’ now for the proposed initial supply of hydrogen blends fed through the existing gas infrastructure.

T

he Sensei N Series can by powered by a blend of up to 30% hydrogen, Rinnai UK is also in advanced development of units which can handle the complete hydrogen gas supply. The appliance is described as ‘out of the box’ design engineered and approved to be installed for use on natural gas. But the same unit is futureproofed - because following a conversion and re-commissioning process in the field it will then operate safely and efficiently solely using a hydrogen supply. The launch of this next phase Rinnai appliance will align with the grid blend upgrade to ensure natural product lifecycles can be followed. All Rinnai units are guaranteed to provide limitless volumes of temperature accurate hot water flows, provided fuel and water connection are constant. The Rinnai Sensei N Series continuous flow hot water heater range offers a more compact, enhanced combustion design that allows for easier installation, superior operational performance as well as ease of serviceability. The Rinnai Sensei N Series is the first ever continuous flow hot water heating unit

manufactured with stainless steel heat exchangers to be available in the UK - this gives a greatly extended working life at optimum performance to each of the four models in the range. Added to this are the market leading extended warranties, that accompany these hydrogen ready appliances. The four models are: the N1600i giving 954 litres per hour; the N1600e (external) also giving 954 litres per hour (at 50 degrees); the N1300i giving 775 litres per hour and the N1300e also giving 775 litres per hours of temperature controlled at 50 degrees. The two 1600s have load profiles of XXL and are water efficiency class A rated, while the 1300s are load profile XL and are also water efficiency class A rated. The range are also low-NOx, and the futureproofed continuous flow water heaters have several global patents on main components. The range utilises Rinnai’s patented advanced technology with a 13-1 turn down ratio – the largest on the market – with extremely quiet operation.

Integral controls on the units enable the water heater to achieve high efficiencies because of advanced burner control and high modulation ranges. This wide range of modulation means that energy usage is completely optimised as the water heater, through smart inbuilt controls, will only heat the water to the temperature required, thus preserving energy. Other features include: • Flue up to 30+ metres for concentric

Rinnai is a true global player in the manufacture of domestic and commercial appliances and operates in almost 50 countries. Rinnai is the world’s leading manufacturer of continuous flow hot water systems - it makes and sells 2 million units each year. The range of units can be manifolded to supply limitless hot water to any size of any site in any industry or sector – healthcare, hospitality, manufacture, leisure parks, foodservice, retail, office blocks and hospitals.

Soprema Completes Extruded Membrane Range with Flagon SB Fleece Backed Membrane

S

oprema UK, the specialist in waterproofing and building envelope solutions, has completed its Flagon extruded single ply range with the launch of Flagon SB: a fleece-backed extruded roofing membrane. Five times faster to manufacture than conventional cast synthetic roofing membranes, the Flagon range is produced in wider 2.1m rolls, reducing the number of laps for faster installation, improved roof integrity and reduced risk. Created following extensive in-house product development, Flagon SB is the fleece-backed product within Soprema’s extruded synthetic membrane range, providing a fully-bonded single ply solution for roof structures. The new product joins Flagon SR, a mechanically-fixed polyester reinforced membrane, and Flagon SV, a glass reinforced bonded membrane. The

•4•

range offers specifiers a choice of robust extruded membranes for any application, backed by Soprema’s technical support and industry-leading warranties. Just 1.5mm thick with a 300g fleece backing, Flagon SB can be fully bonded to the substrate or the insulation. The lack of mechanical fixings prevents any risk of thermal bridging through fixings and, when used as part of a complete

roof build-up solution, along with Soprema’s technical support, Flagon SB is BBA approved for a service life of 35 years. We believe Flagon SB is the only fleece backed, fully adhered extruded membrane available on the UK market and the development of this product once again demonstrates Soprema’s investment and expertise in product development.

Concrete House / Raw Architecture Workshop

T

he project exposes the soft side of the concrete monolith, guiding viewers through an open family home full of natural light, mid-century furniture, art, and lush indoor greenery. The raw surfaces of concrete walls, steel industrial fittings, leather antiques, and personal treasures change in colour and contrast depending on light levels, adding depth and texture to their surroundings. Concrete House is the first building in the world to be built of advanced Fibre Reinforced Concrete, a durable anticracking material developed by Cemex and tested for thermal and structural properties by the University of Zurich.

•6•

The concrete’s fibre composition means it does not require reinforced steel bars to strengthen or hold the structure, making it the first concrete building in the world to be built without rebars in the walls. Concrete House was designed by RAW Architecture Workshop for Adrian and Megan Corrigall and their young family. A lover of concrete since his youth spent skating around Glasgow car parks, Adrian was also influenced by brutalist icons such as the Barbican, the National Theatre, and architect Louis Khan’s use of light to draw occupants through spaces.

EHC LAUNCH THE NEW MERCURY ELECTRIC COMBI BOILER Terry Hay from Weymouth has been recognised for his dedication to building homes of exceptional quality in the annual NHBC Pride in the Job Awards. erry, a site manager for ZeroC, part of Places for People, joins the top five percent of Site Managers to win the award, with his site team, for the management of ZeroC’s Saltash Place development in Poundbury, Dorchester. From a field of more than 10,000, only 450 Site Managers across the UK have won a Quality Award in the first round of the NHBC’s Pride in the Job Awards 2021.

T

Pride in the Job first launched over forty years ago, and judging for the Awards is rigorous with each site manager assessed across six key areas: consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise, and health and safety. Commenting on his award, Terry said: “The Pride in the Job awards are highly regarded within the housebuilding industry and it’s an incredible achievement for both myself and the whole team to be recognised for the hard work we put into the Saltash Place

development. Our aim is to build the best properties we can, ensuring our customers move into their dream home in this beautiful location – it’s a real testament to the quality of homes we are delivering.” Pride in the Job is at the heart of NHBC’s core purpose to support the delivery of high-quality new homes. By recognising the very best site managers across the UK, the competition celebrates the vital role that site managers play in ensuring new homes are delivered on time, on safe sites and to exacting construction quality standards. The Quality Award winners will go on to compete for Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards in the autumn, with the national, Supreme Award winners unveiled in January 2022. Places for People’s Group Executive Director of Developments, Scott Black, said: “We are delighted that Terry and his site team have been recognised by the industry for their commitment and dedication to achieving these standards

day in, day out, at Saltash Place. “It’s a rigorous judging process and only the best in the business achieve this award. This is a reflection of the high standards he and the team upholds across the site at Poundbury in Dorchester, recognising his experience, knowledge and quality across the site. It’s the highest recognition any site manager could wish to achieve.” Commenting on the Awards, NHBC Chief Executive Steve Wood said: “Despite the numerous challenges the industry has faced, the very best site managers of 2021 have remained focused on delivering high quality new homes for their customers. Pride in the Job winning sites have higher levels of homeowner satisfaction as these homes are among the very best in the country. Congratulations to all the 2021 Pride in the Job Quality Award winners.” Part of the ZeroC Poundbury development, Saltash Place is a luxury development of 24 two-bedroom apartments, 6 four-bedroom villas and 4 coach houses.

Modus system used in Orbit Housing’s Fordham House Orbit Housing’s Fordham House in Stratford-uponAvon aims to raise the bar for rented accommodation. Although initially a social housing provider, Orbit now refers to itself as a “developing housing association”, and Fordham House was designed for private rental by key workers in the town. he 82-apartment block provides enhanced protection against noise, a superior maintenance and repair strategy and additional facilities such as secure internal bike storage rooms. Much of the budget for these above-and-beyond features has come from the specification of Modus PVC-U windows from Eurocell in place of the aluminium frames originally specified.

T

The result was a significant reduction in costs, with no compromise on building design and performance. “We saved a significant amount without compromising on the specification or the design”, says Orbit Commercial Director, Adam Cooper. “And from a planner’s point of view, they look identical”. Despite the building being located on the busiest road in Stratford, residents have been satisfied with the noise suppression provided. Confirmation of the Fordham House project quality came with major award wins in the 2019 Inside Housing Development Awards – Best Build for Rent Development and RICS Residential Property of the year (West Midlands).

7-8 WELLINGTON PLACE, LEEDS

The latest UK Government Hub opens in Leeds with air distribution products by Waterloo.

T

he latest UK Government Hub at 7-8 Wellington Place in Leeds city centre is set to become home to 6,150 civil servants from a range of departments including HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and NHS Digital. The office is fitted with air distribution products supplied by Waterloo Air Products plc. 7-8 Wellington Place is the latest building to be completed within the 22-acre Wellington Place development that has transformed this area of Leeds into a vibrant urban quarter, offering state-of-the-art working environments alongside leisure and retail facilities. When fully completed, Wellington Place, which has been delivered by property developer and asset manager MEPC, will be the location for one in 10 jobs in central Leeds.

•10•

At the end of an unprecedented year of challenges for the building services industry, the importance of indoor air quality in the workplace has taken on added significance. Thanks to Waterloo’s extensive range of diffusers, grilles and valves, it was possible to achieve the required superior standard of air distribution throughout the 7-floor, 378,000 sq. ft. building without compromising the desired aesthetics of the interior fittings. Working with principal contractor Wates Group, Waterloo was chosen due to its ability to supply products that would accommodate the client’s preferred perforated ceiling tiles without any need for modification. “Waterloo offered a professional service and brilliant support throughout the design stage of

the build,” said Matt Bell, Project Engineer with Wates Group. “We were invited to develop the concealed grille solution at Waterloo’s integral testing facility, and they provided test reports to supplement the technical submission; this gave us confidence we were selecting the right product to meet the project requirements. Overall, the service we received was fantastic. The products were delivered on time, manufactured to a high standard and ultimately we handed over the building to a happy client.” After proposing several solutions, Waterloo’s Lay on Ceiling Tile Diffuser (LCT20) with a plenum box mount was selected by the client as the ideal product for the application. The LCT20 has been designed specifically for mounting directly onto the back of a client-supplied 20% open area

ceiling tile, using the perforations in the tile as the diffuser. For fitting, the LCT20 can be retained using double sided adhesive strip or by using edge clips. It is available in a range of sizes to suit specific flow ranges and can be duct or plenum mounted. Another key product used for the project was the Waterloo Linear Fan Coil Diffuser (FCD) which provides continuous air distribution for fan coil or variable air volume applications. The blade profile of the FCD is specifically designed to produce throw characteristics with a high induction rate, so prompting rapid mixing and diffusion within the room air. Quick release spring clips and safety cords allow for easy removal during installation and service access. Other products used throughout the offices, toilets and kitchen areas of 7-8 Wellington Place include Plenum Boxes, Perforated and Flush Face Swirl Diffusers, Perforated Face Grilles, Exhaust Valves and Eggcrate Grilles. Every element of the exceptional Wellington Place development has been designed with the wellbeing of the people who use it in mind, from the wide pedestrian boulevards and green spaces to the flow of daylight throughout the offices to the opportunities for social interaction. The result is a unique complex of A Grade, ‘Excellent’ BREEAM-rated office space with a range of environmentally friendly features that help businesses achieve their goals of improved sustainability, a reduced carbon footprint and a happier, more productive workforce. Providing the UK with an almost clinically clean environment

BT1 Ultimate Bathroom Sealant & Adhesive TRIBRID® Technology. Made in Britain No More Mould or Fungal Growth CT1 who lead the way in research and development have pioneered the latest technology for the building industry over the last 18 years. The first to introduce a hybrid sealant almost 18 years ago, pioneered the way forward with a new era of sealants. CT1 showed the industry that you only need one tube for most applications with the correct raw materials and formulation. This new technology presented itself in a tube CT1. CT1 created a formulation with no solvents, allowing CT1 to perform under any difficult conditions, even under water. CT1 can guarantee that it will never shrink or crack, so it will not lose its bonding and sealing capabilities over time. Realising that hybrid formulations would be soon dated with old technology, as demands increase in what we expect from products and with the building industry producing more complex builds. CT1 was proactive rather than re-active. Introducing TRIBRID® technology. Another new era of sealants and adhesives. Now three times stronger, longer colour retention and elongation, TRIBRID® CT1 can’t be matched or compared to again for a long time. CT1’s technical field team also realised that in today’s current conditions people are demanding much cleaner environments and surface areas. Using the correct sealants and adhesives in installations and repairs is key keeping a surface area healthier. BT1- The Ultimate Bathroom Sealant and Adhesive was created as most sealants over time will allow bacterial and fungal growth. Some will grow quicker than others. The bathroom

can be a contaminated area, with heat, fluids and lack of UV light. BT1 based on the revolutionary TRIBRID® formulation, was created to prevent fungal and bacteria growth happening over long periods of time. This unique formulation makes it impossible for bacteria or microbes to form on the surface, and with almost zero indoor emissions, makes this the heathiest choice for your home. But what became apparent after vigorous testing was that using BT1 would reduce the risk of MRSA, E. Coli and campylobacter. Reducing bacteria by 99.99% and being able to retain its clinically clean white appearance is now proving to be the only sealant and adhesive being used by Hospitals, Aged Care Facilities, Clinics, Schools, Universities and Public Buildings. Solihull Hospital in Birmingham and Good Hope Hospital in Sutton to name a few have used and will only use BT1. BT1 - which can also be used in kitchen installations, launched initially in The IPG Member Stores. The IPG is the largest and fastest growing membership group for plumbing, heating and bathroom specialists, wanted to add BT1 to their stock profile and give their members the latest technology for plumbing and installations. Since the growth and reputation of BT1 and the important role it plays in keeping a healthier environment, Wickes stores, will now also be stocking BT1 nationwide. Bathrooms & Washrooms In answer to the continuing market demand for matt black coated towel rails, we successfully introduced the Black Edition by JIS Europe into the Sussex Range. What stands the Black Edition Towel Rail apart from the competition is that it is, as always, manufactured from 100% stainless steel. The rail is then powder coated matt black. Although it may at first seem unnecessary to manufacture a coloured powder coated rail from stainless steel, the properties that set the non-coated rails apart from their mild steel counterparts still stand. They will not rust or corrode, you are buying into a product that will endure the entire life of the bathroom itself.

This is not only a sustainable choice as detailed below it is a sensible choice, should a mild steel rail leak you cannot always replace it with identical fixing spacings, tiles are often one of the main spends in a bathroom, you try and replace a couple of tiles and maintain a polished finish, you will end up paying far more for this than you ever will be for the difference in price between a mild steel rail and a Sussex range stainless steel one, and that’s before you factor in labour costs. We should also take the time to point out we hold stock of our rails, where the chain of supply is now largely disrupted we hold stock and are still operating a 1-2 day turnaround on all orders. Stainless steel is the durable, sustainable choice, manufactured from over 90% recycled material and 100% recyclable in itself. In order to maintain the ethical sustainability of all of our products across the range, we chose to powder coat the stainless steel. Powder coating is highly protective of the environment, it contains no solvents and emits negligible, if any, polluting VOCs into the atmosphere. Powder coating is a clean process, allowing exhaust air from the coating booth to be returned to the plant. Powder overspray can be retrieved and reused and there is no costly waste disposal equipment as unused powder can be reclaimed and returned to a hopper. We have designed the range with our satin finish valves as the perfect complement and for electric only rails we supply an element cable cover in exactly the same finish. There are now twelve of our most popular selling rails in the black edition please do visit www.sussexrange.co.uk for further details or call us on 01825 722988 Wishing all our customers well The team at JIS

Whiteville Ceramics new WING Collection Designed by David Emmanuel Michaud Terry Hay from Weymouth has been recognised for his dedication to building homes of exceptional quality in the annual NHBC Pride in the Job Awards. hiteville Ceramics, innovative Italiandesigned sanitaryware brand specialising in contemporary design-led bathroom interiors is pleased to unveil its brand new WING Collection of winged and thin-lip washbasins, which unite three different design styles: Edgy, Smooth and Round.

W

Exclusively available in the UK and designed by world leading innovator, David Emmanuel Michaud, the WING Collection by Whiteville Ceramics demonstrates outof-the-box design philosophies and a deep passion for style, ergonomics and attention to quality. Designed to be interchangeable, WING makes it easy to create a contemporary statement in the modern bathroom without limitation. You can opt for your basin with the unique wing detail, where each model is cast with the company’s iconic overhang design feature or you can choose to go ‘Light’ with a thin-lip design, where the basin is defined by an ultra-luxe 5mm slim edge profile. Inspired by contemporary living, the WING Collection of products by Whiteville Ceramics is available in four different applications – in set, countertop, with a semi pedestal and full pedestal - and the contemporary colour palette adds to its high fashion look with options like matt Black, White, Grey and Brina, as pictured.

•22•

You can also match your choice of WING basin with Whiteville Ceramics complementary range of special order close-coupled and wall-hung WC’s for a truly ergonomic and cohesive bathroom scheme. Offering you a complete solution for the contemporary bathroom, the new WING Collection by Whiteville Ceramics comprises of:

WING Edgy – Basin / Light Basin / WC, without Wing feature: Ideal for contemporary bathrooms, Edgy is tablet-shaped to present a high-contoured basin with modern aesthetics. Extra sharp angles and clean, geometric lines epitomise the WING Edgy basin, which creates a neat wash zone that is refined and urban in style.

Middle: WING Round White 520mm Over counter Basin with Wing feature at £198 including vat - Dimensions: W520-620 x D450 x H156 (620mm includes wing detail) | Round with Wing | Colour: Matt White | Application: over counter

Right: WING Round Brina 400mm Light Basin, with 5mm thin-lip edge at £353 including vat - Dimensions: W600 x D400 x H140 | Round Thin lip 5mm | Colour: Matt Brina | Application: over counter

WING Round – Basin / Light Basin: Infinite by design, WING Round is a basin with clear design identity as its circular shape is universally thought of as ‘perfect’ and a symbol of the divine symmetry. Its deep bowl and meticulously formed sides make the Round basin by Whiteville Ceramics a true masterpiece for the modern bathroom, able to stand-out amongst other pieces of sanitaryware in the room. Graham Bucktrout, Managing Director at IBC Group says, “Innovative by design, the WING collection with its three different design styles can either live in perfect harmony or provide a level of distinction if you choose to design in contrast. For instance, if you like the softer style of the Round washbasin but want to soften the look with the Edgy WC, then you can combine all three pieces in one scheme and create a bathroom interior, which is original and self-serving.”

*COMING SOON* WING Smooth – Basin / WC, without Wing feature: Slightly more informal, Smooth is a great in compact spaces or designed as a ‘his and hers’ bathroom arrangement. Boasting a smooth-edged design, which is further accentuated by the ultra-thin profiles and sculpted bowl, Smooth is definitely modest in size yet full of beauty and character.

The new WING Collection by Whiteville Ceramics is available now in the UK, and includes the following bathroom sanitaryware seen pictured above:

GERMANY TAKES THE LEAD IN MOVING TO HYDROGENBASED ECONOMY Chris Goggin of Rinnai looks at developments in Germany as the country plans and invests in hydrogen as its mass fuel for both industry and consumers ike many other countries, Germany has also pledged to cut harmful emissions by 2050. In preparation of an up-and-coming energy transition, Germany has manoeuvred itself amongst other EU countries by taking a leading role in becoming hydrogen ready.

L

Hydrogen is considered by many governments and global corporations to be the fuel of the future. As of January 1st, 2021 Germany passed a new Renewables Energies Sources Act, stipulating that support will be provided for the producing and industrial adoption of green hydrogen; a legislative move recommended in June 2020, when Germany issued its National Hydrogen Strategy. Soon after the German Federal Network Agency

produced a further paper on the regulation of hydrogen grids and conducted a further survey on the country’s public about what type of grid regulations should be installed. This significant move towards the introduction of hydrogen into mainstream German society, upholds the idea that similar, if not identical change, could soon be directed across all or most countries across mainland Europe and the UK. The reason for this change can be attributed to the high levels of political and financial influence Germany contributes within the EU. It is Europe’s largest economy and ranks as the world’s fourth. Germany also houses two of the four largest ports on mainland Europe – Hamburg and Bremen, as well as also holding vital road and rail links with Rotterdam – Europe’s largest port, which has also announced its intention to incorporate hydrogen into its energy plans with massive investments of hundreds of millions of euros. The UK is keeping pace with announcements on plans for hydrogen hubs in the NE and NW of England. In anticipating of a hydrogen transition, the German government’s National Hydrogen Strategy stated seven areas that required attention: the scaling up of hydrogen production; support schemes for businesses affected by the transitional period; scaling up of hydrogen transport capacity; public funding; action plan; hydrogen grids and regulations; and the effect on energy, transport and

•24•

infrastructure. Within the German strategy there are several important issues highlighted which could point the way for the rest of Europe in making hydrogen a source of clean energy. The first area the strategy underscores as requiring consideration is the enhancing of green hydrogen production. By 2030 the German government expects hydrogen demand to be around 90–100TWh. To cope with this future demand, by 2030 electrolysers with a capacity of up to 5GW will be installed across the country. This also includes onshore and offshore energy production facilities that will provide fuel for the electrolysers themselves.

This will only be enforced, however, once the German government clearly defines what green hydrogen is and will only apply to facilities that become operational before 1st January 2030. This commitment is also reliant on EU approval for reasons that relate to state-aid. If approved, Sec. 69b EEG 2021 will be passed, meaning that all electricity generated to produce green hydrogen shall be exempt from additional or fixed financial charges. The second area identified by the strategy that requires attention is support schemes for industrial users of hydrogen. In the transition period many businesses will have to replace old machinery with expensive new hydrogen dependant technology. The German government will organize a pilot scheme called: Carbon Contracts for Difference (CfD), this is designed to support the difference in cost left to the end user throughout the industrial green hydrogen transition. The third area of interest the German strategy notes is £7bn of public funding to be made available for the enhancement of the hydrogen technology market. A final interesting point made in the German strategy is that not all renewable and hydrogen facilities can be built on German soil, raising the possibility of neighbouring countries entering a collaborative production and distribution effort. Because of connected land mass on mainland Europe a chain of cooperation has been identified by the strategy as necessary for hydrogen to become a truly continental fuel source. An idea that is entirely feasible regarding the international need for Net Zero.

Localised countries are developing their own plans structured around hydrogen which could, in time, be added to a wider pan-European hydrogen network. Belgium hopes to place a blue hydrogen plant on its North Sea coast in the Port of Ostend and France’s gas pipeline infrastructure has been passed to carry hydrogen blends from 2030 onwards. Luxembourg has announced its own hydrogen strategy and Belgium has contributed to the subject by releasing a report, sponsored by the Port of Antwerp and the Port of Zeebrugge, stating that a national hydrogen energy transition would be “technically and economically feasible.” Germany maintains considerable political sway and controls an influential economy, has two highly industrious continental ports, as well as rail and road links to the largest port in Europe - Rotterdam. For these reasons Germany cannot afford any risk or miscalculation when identifying its next fuel source. For this reason, it is fair to say that hydrogen capacity and distribution, as well as domestic and industrial consumption, will increase across Europe and the UK. Not only can the German strategy deliver a smooth transition, but it can also act as a foundational structure for other nations to follow.

The electrolysers are expected to deliver up to 14TWh and a required renewable electricity quantity of up to 20TWh. A further 5 GW will be added by no later than 2040. The German strategy recognizes that over-enthusiastic electricity demand for the aforementioned electrolysers could instead contribute towards increasing releases of contradictory damaging emissions. As electricity and the process of electrification has been recognized as key in reducing noxious emissions, the German government will consider taxes, levies and surcharges for the purposes of producing green hydrogen be waived.

HOW LINKEDIN RANT LED TO FULL-TIME JOB FOR DAD AN IMPROMTU LinkedIn rant has turned into a full-time job at leading Derbyshire roofing firm PermaRoof for dad-of-one Lee Moore.

T

he 36-year-old, from Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, was between jobs when he signed up to a temporary work agency and was placed on the 6am until 2pm shift at a local food packing manufacturer alongside four other workers. However, by 7am, Lee was the only agency staff member still standing, with the other four quitting in the first hour. Shocked by what he saw, Lee took to LinkedIn to vent. His post ended up going viral, racking up more than 120,000 likes, 5,000 comments and hundreds of job offers – including one from Adrian Buttress, managing director at Alfreton-based PermaRoof. Lee, who has a nineyear-old son, said: “I had been unemployed since mid-February and was in the middle of interviewing for a role at a company in Chesterfield. However, this got pushed back due to Covid, so the recruiter said they could sign me up for some temporary work with an agency. “I couldn’t believe it when an hour into my shift, the four other temporary workers I’d arrived with had already given up – one refused to wear a hair net, another said they didn’t want to use a computer and the remaining two said the work was too boring. I was amazed that

•34•

people out of work could be so picky; for me, a job is there to keep a roof over my family’s heads, pay the bills and provide food, so I was proud to wear my hair net!

Lee Moore has joined PermaRoof as a specialist products manager after his LinkedIn post went viral

“I vented my frustration on LinkedIn – it was only supposed to be a rant, but it ended up going viral. In fact, I am still getting notifications for it today, more than a month later. It was mindblowing to see how far it ended up travelling; I had hundreds of messages from people offering support and opportunities. “One of them was from Adrian at PermaRoof saying he was interested in having a chat. I had a couple of interviews and he made me feel the most wanted. He was very transparent about where the company was heading and really went the extra mile, showing me around the PermaRoof headquarters, which ended up being just a few miles away from my home.” Lee – who previously worked in sales for hire and construction companies – has now joined PermaRoof as a specialist products manager. As part of his new role, he will be working in the firm’s modular division, a sector PermaRoof expanded into during the pandemic after supplying fast flat roofing solutions to four emergency NHS projects during the first month of lockdown.

Adrian said: “I believe in hiring on attitude as everything else can be taught. When I came across Lee’s post on LinkedIn, I knew I had to speak to him. When I discovered he had previous sales experience and lived just down the road from our head office, it seemed like fate. Lee had hundreds of job offers, so I am truly

delighted that he chose to come and join the PermaRoof team. We’re extremely happy to have him with us and know he’ll do a fantastic job building our customer base for the modular division.” For more information on PermaRoof, please visit www.permaroof.co.uk or call 01773 608839.

West Fraser product application: Roofing (OSB) Getting buildings wind and watertight is a priority on any construction site so choosing a quick, easy to install, reliable and versatile roofing system is vital. igh quality roof decking or pitched roof sarking is an essential component and Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is now the preferred option for many. Unsurprisingly, given the product’s outstanding attributes, West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero OSB3 or SterlingOSB Zero T&G is frequently the first choice.

H

Ideal for structural use in load bearing dry or humid conditions, SterlingOSB Zero OSB3 offers great value and durability. Stronger than most softwood

ply, thanks to its makeup of multiple layers of real wood strands pressed together, it is designed to withstand the toughest of conditions. Working with the boards is trouble free as they are uniform in quality with no knots, voids or delamination issues. Helping to cut waste, a range of panel sizes and thicknesses is available to suit all needs. The boards are square-edged so butt together easily and cleanly. Panels are cut and installed on a roof using conventional roofing equipment and are easy to saw, drill, nail or plane. Nails can be driven as close as 8mm from the

panel edge without causing splitting. SterlingOSB Zero’s smooth surface gives improved adhesion qualities for all flat roofing applications and no sanding is required, even for GRP finishes. With all the advantages of the Sterling OSB Zero range, SterlingOSB Zero T&G is specifically designed for flat roofing and is BBA approved and fully compliant to BS 6229:2003. The panels are consistent and machined to exact tolerances. Reliable fixings are easily achieved across the board using 3mm diameter ring-shank nails or 50mm long screws at 100mm centres across the supporting joists. The tongue and groove profile helps increase the lifespan of the roof by reducing movement of the boards which could damage surface coverings. Timber is a highly sustainable building product and, with the Sterling OSB Zero range, there is the added reassurance that the product’s environmental credentials are further enhanced. The panels are net carbon negative, responsibly sourced and FSC certified. They are manufactured in the UK from locally grown timber, cutting embodied carbon from transportation. In addition, all West Fraser mills have obtained the coveted environmental ISO 14001 accreditation. The Sterling OSB Zero range is also the first OSB product to be made in the UK with zero added formaldehyde, so it is an even ‘greener’ board that meets all standards with ease. Samples of SterlingOSB Zero, and West Fraser’s other construction panels, can be ordered on the website Uk.westfraser.com. Head to the housebuilder page on the website to download a selection of tools including a fully-interactive guide to all West Fraser products and a checklist to make sure you have everything you need for your build. EMBRACING THE GREEN ROOF TREND Green roofing is one of the fastest-growing eco-friendly options for homeowners who want to be sustainable while extending their home, and green roofs can offer great benefits as well as being an attractive feature. Adrian Buttress – managing director of EPDM rubber roofing specialists PermaRoof, part of PermaGroup – explains how simple creating a sustainable roof can be when you choose the correct materials.

•38•

reen roofs are sometimes thought of as a specialist feature due to their innovative nature, meaning contractors are often not made aware in conversations with merchants that they could be offering them as an extra service.

G

Also known as “living roofs”, they have a visible top layer that consists of plant medium and can be crowned in a number of different ways depending on the tastes of the building owner, the purpose of the roof (whether it’s a flat roof on an extension or something smaller, such as the top of a bike store), and its weight-bearing capacity.

Every layer is important Green roofs are made up several layers of material with a base, waterproofing membrane at the bottom, protected from the drainage layers by isolation medium and a planting layer on top. Planting layers typically consist of ground covering, water-loving plants such as sedum and other succulents, moss and grasses. Arguably, the most important layer to get right is the base membrane. Once you’ve determined that the structure will take the additional weight of a green roof, which a surveyor would be able to confirm, then choosing the right membrane is crucial. Creating a green roof can be a costly, timeconsuming process for the client, therefore using a reliable, high-quality waterproofing membrane is essential for the base layer. If this base membrane fails and need to be replaced, not only does it mean a waste of time and money for homeowners, but it could also negatively impact a contractor’s reputation – particularly if regular failures occur.

The ideal membrane Your base layer must provide 100% waterproofing across the entire project and be effectively adhered directly onto the roof deck, which is what makes EPDM the perfect candidate for a long-term living roof. EPDM membranes carry a life expectancy of more than 50 years, backed up and proven in the field all over the world across a wide range of climates. Because the planting medium absorbs rainfall so effectively, water is often consistently present and seeps through the drainage and protective insulation layers before reaching the membrane. This is where the EPDM comes into its own as it removes this concern by protecting the flat roof deck from water ingress and offering the best protection over time when compared to any other flat roofing membrane.

Three top tips 1. Use an isolation layer widely across the green roof Quite literally, cover all your bases. Make sure the base waterproofing membrane is completely protected from the gravel or other aggregates that may be used in the following drainage layers. While EPDM doesn’t damage easily, it still requires adequate protection to ensure the membrane doesn’t get punctured. By simply covering the entire surface area with a suitable isolation layer – such as a geotextile fleece – you minimise this risk and will also contribute to making the home more energy efficient. 2. Consider maintenance aspects during the design process There are three different kinds of green roof design, which all require different levels of maintenance: • Extensive: This is the lowmaintenance option; it’s often planted with mediums that are mostly self-sustaining and hardy against most weather conditions. The most successful plans for extensive green roofs are sedum, rough grasses, or moss.

• Semi-intensive: This is often used in roofing that can be used and walked upon, such as roof terraces. Paths with planting that can be lightly maintained are the ideal candidate. • Intensive: This is the most weight-bearing option, so advice from a surveyor or architect would be advised to ensure the current roof can support this additional weight. It offers more design ideas as a garden, such as the use of trees, shrubs or even the creation of patio areas and/or flower beds. 3. Add interest around the edges It’s a good idea to spend some time on the design of a living roof as mistakes can prove costly. For example, think carefully about how the green roof appears from the ground. If it’s a high roof, seeding around the edges with plants designed to overhang could be a nice additional design feature. But above everything else, choose a supplier than can support the contractor’s design vision who has a dedicated knowledge of green roofs. This includes support of the design or aesthetic value of the intended roof as well as consideration of creating habitats for urban wildlife, surface water management, sound insulation, and energy efficiency.

Lightwell Restoration – Brentwood, Essex

Delta Registered Installers, Renderseal Ltd were employed to provide a maintainable waterproofing solution to a problematic lightwell. The scope of the project was to facilitate a solution for water penetration and salt contamination without disturbing the existing garden patio or adding any additional pressure to the interior of the property.

A

ny below ground structure will require a robust waterproofing design. The same scenario applies to lightwells. In this project scenario, the basement lightwell walls are earth retaining and are subject to lateral penetration from ground water subject to weather conditions and water table levels. The existing render finish, on inspection was very sandy in colour and failed to form a barrier/resistance to hold back any moisture/water. An earth retaining wall is a structure designed and constructed to resist the lateral pressure of soil, when there is a desired change in ground elevation that exceeds the angle of repose of the soil. Whether you are building a new home or doing a renovation, you can add plenty of light-filled luxury by simply including an architectural void or lightwell. Voids and lightwells are large open interior spaces that contribute to natural light entering a property from outside. Methodology After surveying the condition of the lightwell and adjoining property, Renderseal Ltd proposed a solution to modify the lightwell to mitigate any future problems without significantly affecting the structure or surroundings.

•40•

Case Study Results Renderseal Ltd were praised for the quality and speed of their refurbishment/installation, which was completed in just 5 days and within budget. The owners of the property were delighted with the result and knowledge that their lightwell will remain fully protected against the long-term threat of water and salt ingress. Delta’s PT membrane offers a fast and effective method for repairing and upgrading lightwells, whilst at the same time retaining the existing aesthetics of properties, making this approach particularly suited to repairs. Delta’s PT Membrane is a HDPE membrane which works as an impermeable damp proofing base for plaster or shotcrete (as a water control and drainage membrane). Due to the “air gap” technology, Delta PT creates an effective barrier to the transmission of moisture, humidity, water vapour and salts, whilst assisting drainage by directing any water ingress to suitable drainage points.

Once the Delta PT was installed, Renderseal incorporated vertical expansion joints to prevent the render from cracking, whilst installing a horizontal stainlesssteel stop bead base. They further applied a two-coat sand/cement to provide a surface ready for painting. Products • Delta PT Membrane • Delta PT Plugs with Grommets • Delta Fleece Tape • Delta PT Profile

Future-Proof Your Projects With A1 Fire Rated Decking Fire Safety Current legislation expressly prohibits the use of combustible materials on buildings with a floor above 18m in height. Although legislation allows for combustible materials below 18m, a government advice note released in January 2019 recommends that non-combustible materials should be used on residential projects regardless of building height. It is possible that, in time, this advice will become legislation.

How To Future-Proof Your Project Decisions surrounding fire safety are constantly changing, be it legislation, NHBC recommendations or government advice. In order to future-proof a project against any potential legislation changes, it would be wise to incorporate products that are able to achieve the highest possible Fire Rating.

As we manufacture all of our decking in our 52,500 square foot factory in North Yorkshire, we are able to provide both A2 powder coated decking and A1 aluminium mill finished decking.

Mill Finished Aluminium Decking Choosing an aluminium mill finished decking option means that an A1 Fire Rating is achievable, which is the highest rating and the safest possible choice. We are able to provide a mill finish to all of our modular decking options (Neatdek, Neatdek 188 and Neatdek HW) so any drainage, privacy and design requirements can be achieved.

Fade To Grey It is important to note that, over time (usually between 1-12 months), aluminium will oxidise and fade to create more of a light grey finish.

Other Benefits As well as the aforementioned Fire Rating benefits that come with a mill finished product, mill finished decking is highly durable, virtually maintenance-free and comes with a class leading 25-year guarantee. If you’d like any further information about our modular decking options, or if you’d like to send us an enquiry, please call 01653 695 721, email us at sales@neaco.co.uk or fill out our contact form here.

Eurocell has always led the way in patio door design. In fact, we’ve long been the customer’s choice when it comes to security, strength and performance that never compromises on design. So what’s new? Introducing Syncro, a brand new in-line system that opens up even more possibilities in terms of design, energy efficiency and sustainability. Not just our strongest and most secure atio door system yet, Syncro also provides a new level of sustainability, plus improved design and performance that meet the demands of installers and homeowners alike thanks to several market leading features. These include main frames made using at least 40% post-consumer recycled PVC-U; better thermal efficiency, with triple glazed U-values as low as 1.0; a 3.5m maximum width, one of the largest PVC-U patio door systems on the market; and a unique soft close system, which, along with a choice of standard or heavy duty rollers allowing sash weights of up to 140kg, makes for a much smoother glide and closure action with no ‘bounce back’ if the door is accidently slammed. What’s more, is the option of a through-colour grey substrate – a first for Eurocell in a patio door. The grey substrate is extruded in PVC-U with special heat reflecting pigment to help reduce expansion on hot days. Not only does this the give designers a way to meet current design trends for the all grey look; but because patio doors are open so much of the time on sunny summer days, it also makes for much more pleasing visual appearance by removing any unsightly white extruded areas.

Benefits at a glance: • More sustainable with frame composition made up of at least 40% PCW (post-consumer waste) • Better thermal efficiency with U-values as low as 1.3 for double glazed units and 1.0 for triple glazed • Maximum width of 3.5m (2 pane) • Triple as well as double glazing compatible for even better insulation. • Grey substrate for total coordination with modern designs • Soft close option

Smooth or matt grey foil options can also be ordered along with traditional rosewood and golden oak from stock, plus 32 further colour options on longer lead times, extend the colour choices further. Like all Eurocell PVC-U products, the Syncro system comes with an exact colour-match guarantee. That means the colour is precisely matched to all Eurocell window, door and conservatory roof products, creating a coordinated, consistent look across any property. Syncro is tested to BS6375 and PAS24 2016 standards and therefore meets the requirements of Document Q - the newest security guidelines for patio doors. And for additional peace of mind, Syncro has been through 50,000 cycles of open and close tests to prove robustness.

Following customer feedback and as part of Eurocell’s continual improvement programme we have also introduced a new Aluminium Interlock to be used on all none PAS24 Syncro patio doors to help improve the fabrication and installation process. Ian Kernaghan, Head of Product Design and Development for Eurocell commented, “Syncro has been designed to meet the changing needs of the patio door market and we believe it does that job beautifully. It offers customers genuinely attractive options like triple glazing, a soft close feature and white or grey substrate options, in addition to using recycled PVC-U content and achieving new levels of thermal and acoustic insulation efficiency.
