VELUX launches MyDaylight reality app for renovation ®
The app enables homeowners to design their own room, visualising MyDaylight is a powerful new app by VELUX that enables homeowners to design their own room or renovation project by easily selecting parameters such as floor dimensions, roof height and ceiling pitch. They can then customise further by adding windows, floor and wall finishes, the room’s location, and more. After approximately ten minutes, they receive a digital simulation which can be viewed in 3600 or virtual reality, and gives a life-like recreation of the room and the changing effects of daylight inside. The app bridges a gap, leading homeowners from imagination to implementation: “Many people who are looking to reshape their home find it difficult moving from imagination to concrete proposals. The app brings homeowners one step closer to the home they have envisioned, as the 3600 and virtual reality visualisations make it both tangible and achievable,” says Grant Sneddon, Daylight Expert, VELUX.
•4•
Fueling the home renovation market digitally The do-it-yourself market is booming, with Europeans spending as much as EUR 377 billion on home improvement in 2016 [European Home Improvement Monitor, 2016]. Meanwhile, the building industry is becoming ever more digital, and with MyDaylight, VELUX is empowering homeowners with a groundbreaking digital tool to inform their home investment decisions. Sneddon continues: “As the market for home improvement is growing and our customers are getting more digital, we see a clear business potential in launching an app, which for the first time will enable homeowners to see just how much daylight can change a home, adding value and ensuring that the renovation pays off.
“We anticipate it will boost sales revenue throughout 2018 and beyond thanks to new renovation projects triggered by use of the app.”
Private capital available for renovation projects across Europe reaches a staggering EUR 30 trillion [Copenhagen Economics, Healthy Homes Barometer 2017], and providing homeowners with the best possible information is key to unlocking this potential.
The future is digital The app is a unique opportunity for homeowners to experiment with different renovation options, and a mobile application means the service is available anywhere, anytime – thereby meeting the growing consumer trend for online customisation, browsing and shopping.
“The search for inspiration is truly moving into the online space. With this app we meet our customers where they are. Homeowners can investigate different renovation ideas wherever they are - on the bus, the train or at home,” says Sneddon. The time spent browsing on mobile devices is accelerating and has almost doubled across Europe, from an average
– the world’s first virtual design the real effect of daylight, with 3600 view and virtual reality options. of 53 minutes per day in 2012 to 1 hour 38 minutes in 2016 [Global web index 2016]. Today, more than 515 million Europeans are internet users, while 296 million are e-shoppers, corresponding to 43 per cent of Europeans over the age of 15 [Ecommerce Europe 2016 Report]. E-commerce increased from EUR 402 bn to EUR 510 bn from 2014 to 2016, while mobile commerce is expected to triple from 2014 to 2018 [E-commerce report 2015].
ever deployed before, to provide an immersive feeling of light and space. You can customise your own room in the rendering, helping to take your ideas and inspiration to the next level,” adds Sneddon.
5. With the rendering saved on your phone, you will be able to experience the room in both 360° and VR formats. VR goggles will make you feel as if you were standing in the middle of the room you just created!
The rendering technology is built on cloud and virtual reality gaming technology taking the app to new levels.
You can play with endless scenarios and designs and create as many simulations as you like. Time and imagination are the only limits.
To imagine and design with daylight in mind you simply: 1. Download the MyDaylight app
World first using cloud and virtual reality technology in a home renovation app
2. Configure your space by plotting in data, such as floor dimensions and roof pitch
For the first time ever, homeowners have the benefit of the most cuttingedge technology in order to experience daylight in an environment matching the specific characteristics of their own home.
3. Create different daylight designs by playing with the positioning and size of windows
“We are using advanced new technology, which no company has
4. Within minutes, you will receive a notification that your personal daylight render is ready (expect around 1 minute for loading of your simulation the first time you see it, as it loads a big data file)
The MyDaylight app is free of charge for everyone and available in the Apple and Google Play Stores from today Monday 29 January 2018 in Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark, Austria, Belgium and Slovenia, and on 30 January in Germany. In February, it will be available in Poland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Spain and Hungary, and more countries are to follow later in the year. A version for the US will also be available later in the year.

Anti-fingerprint worktop heralds new era in kitchen surface design First-look at Formica Group’s new absolute matte worktop at KBB Birmingham Formica Group will reveal its new premium matte kitchen range, Formica Infiniti® Worktops, at this year’s KBB (4-7 March 2018), stand L100, NEC Birmingham. Traditionally, matte finishes in the kitchen have been avoided due to the ease at which they blemish. After all, who wants to see unsightly marks in an area where cleanliness is key? Formica Infiniti® Worktops’ absolute matte surface heralds a new generation of texture in the home. Its anti-fingerprint and anti-abrasion surfacing technology, developed by Formica Group, provides stronger resistance compared with standard laminate. In addition, anti-microbial protection prevents the harbouring and growth of bacteria, so the surface doesn’t just look clean, it is clean. The worktop’s micro-contours diffuse light to give the surface a depth of colour, providing its marble, wood and stone decors with a visual authenticity. The same contours that give the surface its water repellent qualities also channel moisture away from fingerprints so they don’t leave marks. With its moleskin-like
•10•
texture, Formica Infiniti® Worktops add a sensorial dimension to the kitchen. Whether consciously or not, we all have a tendency to touch the surfaces around us - the introduction of an ultra-smooth surface to your kitchen means not only does your worktop look good, it feels good too. Visitors to KBB will be able to get up close and personal to the absolute matte surface and put its properties to the test.
Contemporary décors Twelve modern, on-trend décors are available in the Formica Infiniti® Worktops range. Four solid neutral colours form the core of the range offering a sleek fit for today’s kitchen. A unique woodgrain – Washed Knotty Ash – breaks away from the typical standard oak and walnut look with a distinctive limed grain that blends with the greys in the range. Stone effect finishes – Carrara Bianco and Nero Grafite – offer a classic, stylish finish, while Elemental Graphite and Elemental Concrete provide an urban-industrial look. Finally, three exclusive engineered stone patterns – Neo Cloud, Neo Tornado, Neo Cyclone – create a harmonious blend when both smooth or tactile finishes are used.
Available in six product sizes, the full range offers worktops, breakfast bars, splashbacks and upstands, giving complete freedom for a uniform design throughout the whole kitchen or the option to mix and match for visual interest. A square edge option as well as a more conventional post-form edge gives scope for additional design possibilities for the heart of the home. Formica Infiniti® Worktops carry the Made in Britain marque and are manufactured by Formica Group at its UK manufacturing plant. The Made in Britain campaign is designed to promote and celebrate the manufacture of UK-made goods. Formica Group is the only High Pressure Laminate manufacturer to carry the Made in Britain marque.

An Easy Way to Design in a Renovation or When considering renovation or new build, then Isokern’s Pumice Double Module system is highly recommended. The easy, put-together blocks provide a zero distance to combustibles due to their volcanic insulation and different range of diameters suitable for any project. The lightweight blocks are easy to handle. The outer and inner blocks are laid at the same time but with staggered joints for safety and stability. The double layer of pumice separated by an air gap maximises the chimney insulation. This has been used in a number of renovations as well as new build projects throughout the UK. The features of the Isokern DM include: • Unique Features of the Isokern DM system • Zero distance to combustibles on straight rendered chimneys (when using top ring terminal) • Quick and easy to assemble • Lightweight materials, easy to handle • Highly insulating pumice for better draw and minimum heat loss • Staggered joints for maximum safety and stability • Air gaps between outer casing and flue prevents surface staining • Good resistance to temperature variations gives the maximum performance for your appliance. • CE Certified to EN1858 with the designation T450, NI, D, 3, G (00). And combined with a Schiedel Isokern Magnum Firechest, the results can be amazing.
•12•
a Chimney New-Build One such remarkable installation of a Magnum Firechest with a Pumice Chimney System took place Down Under in the Australian Bush. The project was undertaken by the Volcanic Chimney Company, based in Wales (it’s a long story, continued on our website). An old patio was replaced with a roaring fire, using a Magnum Fire Chest and an Isokern Double Module Chimney System. All chosen due to the insulation properties and easy construction. Another project, a little more closer to home, was undertaken by Billing Chimneys, which saw an Isokern Pumice Liner installed, with the construction of a register plate to support the liners, going through a thatched roof. Billings chose Isokern in this particular situation because of its longevity, durability and excellent insulation. The insulation was very important because it kept the inside of the flue hot, but also prevented damage from any external heat transfer into the adjacent structure. For more information on our Isokern range, please feel free to email us on info@schiedel.co.uk or give us a call on 01202 861650 – you can also visit our website, www.schiedel.co.uk which has a wealth of information, including a number of video instruction guides.

Tansun Infrared Heaters Maximise Outside Dining at the Lighterman The Lighterman at Granary Square, Kings Cross is a new contemporary design of public house and a landmark site in the new Kings Cross development. And Tansun infrared heaters are playing their part by enhancing the exterior space for the warmth and comfort of customers. This new project by Open House Projects, has seen The Lighterman join the group’s two others in London’s Fitzrovia and follows the theme of a modern interpretation of the traditional pub with casual dining, drinking and socialising using modern British menus with European influences. Inspired by the Victorian Lightermen who worked on the flat bottom barges, known as ‘Lighters,’ The Lighterman has a contemporary design over three floors with stunning views across Granary Square and Regents Canal. Tansun infrared heaters were selected by Open House Projects for the outside terrace where Tansun’s Bahama single 1.5kW heaters are discreetly integrated under seven parosols with four heaters per parasol. Hannah Burke, Project Manager for Open House Projects is delighted with the result commenting, “The Tansun heaters really do allow us to take the inside out, making our terrace functional over the cooler months and evenings so generating increased revenue from customers’ outdoor use”. She continued, “We were delighted to find the Tansun heaters as they are very sleek looking units and can be specified in any RAL colour. We chose graphite grey to complement the masts of the parasols and so they are not at all intrusive, and at the same time have low glare and look warm. The heaters have been very successful and we hope to use them on other projects in the future.” The Bahama infrared heaters from Tansun are a flexible design easily fitted onto awnings and parasols to become part of their structure and are IP rated. Available in single 1.5kW or double 3kW appliances, the stylish heaters can cover an area of up to 22 sq.metres and their glare-reducing gold reflectors have a smooth, parabolic finish for powerful heat dispersion. The Bahama heater provides customers with low glare heaters that fit discreetly into many environments in the standard colours of white, grey or black. The design is also available in any RAL colour with Tansun’s bespoke colour service which allows heaters to be powder coated in a wide range of colours with additional corporate branding if required. The Bahama heaters can be made to fit awning or parasol profiles or indoor / outdoor venue colour schemes to suit customers’ needs. The heaters come with a full two year Tansun warranty. All of Tansun’s products are manufactured in the UK and designed using premium components. Tansun has been established for thirtyfive years and pioneered the concept of infrared electric heaters in collaboration with Philips technology. The company offers the largest range of domestic, commercial and industrial infrared heaters in the world, providing maintenance-free, safe and healthy heating appliances. Why specify a living wall for your home or garden?
Scotscape install living walls for both interior and exterior projects, for domestic customers or for commercial businesses. Why is the living wall trend so prevalent and why should you consider specifying one? The benefits of living walls for domestic or commercial clients are the same – they are stunning to look at, plants improve air quality by trapping PM10s, living walls absorb noise therefore have an acoustic benefit, exterior living walls support biodiversity – providing nesting habitats for birds and food for pollinators, living walls reduce the immediate temperature – causing a cooling effect in the summer and thereby reducing the urban heat island effect in cities, finally living walls also insulate buildings when retrospectively fitted, bringing substantial energy efficiency’s in both summer and winter. Commercial clients can use living walls as part of communicating their sustainability targets and to deliver healthier working environments for staff and customers. The benefits of living walls are even more acute as urbanisation increases and cities become more and more crowded. Bringing nature into the heart of the home or city connects with humans at a fundamental level to improve health wellbeing and productivity, for future city dwellers this is crucial. The city brings with it demands on space making living walls the perfect solution to limited garden space – beautifying otherwise grey expanses of concrete and brick to create mini green havens. Internally living walls can bring nature in, especially when your home has no outdoor space – bringing the feel-good factor to the heart of the home or office. We work with homeowners, architects and specifiers to create well-designed healthy living walls. Our unique Fytotextile system supports excellent plant health which ensures our installations look great all year round. Expert maintenance is key to the life span of living walls and the Scotscape team has an award-winning reputation to uphold, often retrospectively bringing otherwise neglected living walls back to abundant health! We offer a full CPD service about living walls to architects and specifiers we also present directly to homeowners keen to find out more about our system. For the keen installer or knowledge seeker we also run a series of living wall workshops at our Head Office in Surbiton Surrey which fully immerses the specifier or keen gardener into the installation of living walls. www.scotscape.net sales@scotscape.net Tel: 0208 254 5000

54% of tradesmen don’t understand insulation A recent survey has found that more than 54% of tradesmen believe that the only use of insulation is to prevent heat loss.
In response to their survey, market leading natural insulation manufacturer Steico UK and distributor Ecomerchant, have come together to launch a new campaign called Protexion. The campaign aims to educate all aspects of the construction industry that insulation products do far more than just ‘keep the heat in’. To design a well-insulated building, informed decisions need to be made throughout all phases of a construction project to ensure a building performs at its best.
•16•
Adrian Judd, operations director at Steico UK, says: “Current data, including this survey, tells us that there is a knowledge gap when it comes to people’s understanding of natural insulation.
“Steico UK saw the opportunity of joining forces with Ecomerchant to get the whole construction trade better understanding the long-term effects of insulation. We’ve joined forces to form the Protexion campaign which, explains the important role insulation plays when designing a building and the knock-on impact it has on a person’s health and wellbeing.”
The Protexion campaign will set out to equip tradesmen, architects and self-builders with the right knowledge to compare insulation materials on a like-for-like basis – something both Steico and Ecomerchant feel is not happening in the industry. Will Kirkman, managing director at Ecomerchant, explains: “The survey was initially launched because we were seeing a trend throughout the industry of common misconceptions when it came to the uses of insulation. Only 50% of
people surveyed had a choice of insulation materials when they were renovating or constructing a building and either they were happy to keep using the same insulation product they have always used or were simply not aware of alternatives.” The survey also showed that 100% of respondents considered sustainability to be one of the most important criteria when selecting a product. In terms of manufacturing and disposability, using natural materials such as wood fibre insulation, are much better for the environment than materials produced from energy-intensive industries such as concrete and steel. Will Kirkman, continues: “This campaign provides a fantastic platform to address old-fashioned building practices and encourage thinking around natural insulation. It aims to progress the use of modern techniques and natural materials, so we build well-insulated buildings which, are fit for purpose and will improve their occupants’ comfort and well-being.”
For a free audit of which natural insulation’s right for your project, visit www.ecomerchant.co.uk/protexion or call 01793 847 445.
INSULATION - 8 ROLES, CAN YOU NAME THEM? Whether it’s protection from the elements, harmful substances or maintenance costs, insulation is one of the most important considerations when specifying products for a building. Insulation isn’t just about keeping a building warm. Natural insulation does much more to improve a building’s performance in terms of thermal, acoustic, health, fire and durability.

Cubic design exploits Kebony cladding Spectacular hillside house inspired by cluster design Located an hour north of Oslo, on a majestic hillside facing the Norwegian woods and Mjøsa Lake, lies the Gjøvik house. Imaginatively created by Norm Architects, the house comprises of six overlapping cubes clad with Kebony, a beautiful wood recommended by leading architects. The Gjøvik house makes for an intimate and dynamic family home with materials, levels and inbuilt tailor-made furniture to create a cosy and minimalistic home. The initial idea behind the cluster style house was to build a home with a warm and inviting feel where one can truly hibernate and take shelter from the cold of the Nordic winter. Gracefully embracing the hillside terrain, with breath-taking views of the Mjøsa Lake, the Gjøvik house merges with its surroundings in a modest and natural manner. Positioned at the centre of the property, the kitchen offers an impressive outlook on both sides with an influx of light from floor-to-ceiling windows. As you move through the house, views are framed within windows in each of the cube rooms. The intertwining is further underlined by the architect’s choice of materials, floor becomes wall and wall becomes floor in an ever-changing world of concrete and wood in subtle warm tones. The addition of built-in furniture adds to the soft, minimal expression in this unique family home. The exterior façade boasts narrow Kebony cladding which will eventually fade and blend in with the surrounding landscape as it gradually develops its silvery-grey patina. Kebony was selected for its aesthetic qualities, providing a natural appearance for the house. Additionally, Kebony requires no maintenance beyond Call us normal cleaning and is highly dimensionally stable and 01296 481220 resistant to wear and weathering, further confirming it is the perfect material for the exposed location of the Gjøvik house.
STAYS LIGHT
Linda Korndal, lead Architect at Norm Architects commented: “Embracing all aspects of family life, this modern cluster house provides the sensation of being together, whilst not necessarily being in the same room due to the switching levels and unique choice of materials. We are truly impressed with the capabilities of Kebony as a natural, sustainable and durable product which has provided the perfect finish for the exterior of the Gjøvik house.”

NATURAL WOOD
Developed in Norway, Kebony’s revolutionary technology is an environmentally friendly process, which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural by-product. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability, hardness and dimensional stability.
Mette Valen, Sales Manager Norway at Kebony added: “Norm Architects have cleverly achieved their ambition of designing a modern, minimalistic home with a warm and inviting feel. The cubic nature of the house is a fantastic representation of how to blend a modern property into uneven surroundings and we are so pleased that Kebony has been able to contribute to the intended vision.”

Accessibility and Inclusion - The Future of the Built Environment at Naidex 2018 Accessibility is still an issue in 2018. Lack of inclusion in the built environment comes as a challenge to many in their daily lives, and a great deal more than you’d think - 13.3 million people approximately. In light of this, Naidex - Europe’s leading disability event - has decided to address the issue in a bid for positive change. This year, Naidex will be introducing the Home, Design & Build Summit - an area of the show dedicated to the exploration of accessibility in the built environment. Industry leading experts will be delivering seminars looking at today’s situation and finding the solutions of tomorrow. Here is a look at some of the topics that will be covered at this year’s Naidex…
The New Look of Inclusion A new wave of inclusive architects have emerged to change the way people perceive accessibility. Inclusive Home founder Vaila Morrison will explain how and why accessible designs need to be promoted more within home design media, so that both people with and without disabilities can understand the need for inclusive homes. Elaine Hollerhead the founder of DESIGNATE will explain how architects and designers are looking to combine functionality, safety and inspirational concepts to make homes more attractive to potential buyers, increasing both well-being and property value in her seminar at Naidex.
Technology taking over Accessibility Smarthomes are becoming more prominent and are a great tool of independence for people with disabilities. Macro Level Smarthome’s founder, James Kinsman, will explore in his seminar the advances in commercial smarthome technology, and the ways in which it can be used to assist in gaining independence, by integrating standard consumer equipment as opposed to requiring expensive custom designed “accessible” hardware. Technology in the built environment’s benefits also span to the healthcare sector. Sensory Guru is a virtual and augmented reality brand renowned for creating technology that is redefining the boundary between the virtual and physical worlds. Its CEO, Lee Blemings, will be uncovering the advantages that these emerging technologies can have for people with ASD and dementia, living in residential settings.
Naidex Naidex will once again bring over 12,000 visitors from all over Europe together for the 44th time, on the 25th & 26th April, at the NEC Birmingham. Providing educational insight into future trends in accessible designs, world-class speakers, product demonstrations, 1-2-1 advice, networking opportunities and new interactive features, Naidex will showcase the future of the built environment.

Can your insulation really affect your health? By Will Kirkman, managing director at Ecomerchant
A well-insulated house or office will protect your health, comfort and lifestyle but how many of us know and understand how to achieve this? Ecomerchant and Steico UK have joined forces to launch a protection campaign. It aims to champion the benefits of using natural insulation products. How we select insulation needs to be about having a real choice and for specifiers to be equipped with the right knowledge to compare materials on a like-for-like basis. To design a well-insulated building, you need to make informed decisions throughout all phases of a construction project to ensure your building performs as you envisage. However, selecting the right insulation is about more than just reaching building regulation compliance or ‘keeping in the heat’. It’s about ensuring a building protects its occupants’ entire well-being and comfort in the following ways.
•26•
How well does insulation keep the heat out? In the UK, thermal insulation to protect from the cold is essential, particularly given ever-increasing energy costs. However, as demand for usable square footage of buildings increases, basement and loft conversions are the routes many now take. However, these parts of a home or office, are the spaces most prone to extremes in temperature. They therefore need more thought – i.e. how do you keep a space warm in winter but, for a loft, how to keep it cool come summer. Compared with synthetic insulation materials, wood fibre insulation has a much higher density. This higher density means that natural insulation makes for a better heat buffer as the high midday temperature will only reach the internal side and be lost at night when the temperature is already cooler outside.
How a building’s breathability is hurting our health A breathable structure is one that allows the passage of moisture. With 90 per cent of all building construction problems associated with water in some way, breathability is essential in measuring a building’s performance and preventing the accumulation of harmful water within the building’s fabric. These are fundamental in reducing health risks from mould, mites that those suffering from respiratory illnesses such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are particularly susceptible to. For effective breathability, there are four essential components that need to be considered: • • • •
a moisture pathway a driving force a sorptive fabric vapour control.
Natural fibre insulation is most effective as it suppresses potentially harmful water by binding and releasing moisture which helps regulate humidity levels as the moisture moves.
Easy-to-fit insulation A well-designed building takes into consideration how a material performs throughout the building’s entire life cycle. This includes ease of installation. Steico’s wood fibre insulation is simple and easy to fit (either packed or friction-fitted), eliminating installer error, keeping construction programmes, tight and costs, low.
How sustainability will save you time and money While all insulation is helping the environment by limiting energy being burnt for heat, natural fibre insulation materials are comparatively more robust. This means that when it comes to disposal, they can be composted – i.e. no specialist waste facilities or landfill. Throughout their lifecycle they will additionally have a much lower, and often, negative carbon footprint.
More than just protecting your home from fire All insulations will meet fire safety standards, but this is a minimum rating. The key differentiator between natural and synthetic is that natural insulations will prevent the spread of fire and if burnt, will not give off toxic fumes such as cyanide as polyisocyanurates (PIR) might.
Will the house be standing in 100 years? Condensation is one of the costliest risks to buildings causing huge maintenance repairs and structural damage. Natural materials are better able to absorb and release water whilst remaining dry meaning it is better able to protect from and buffer moisture thereby becoming a key part of healthy living.
Comfort for occupants When selecting insulation for a building, there are implications for the health of the occupants, the structure of the building, its impact on the environment, its acoustic properties, durability and carbon footprint.
Cancelling out the noise for a peaceful night’s sleep The higher density of natural insulations - such as wood fibre - makes them better at reducing noise. Sounds external to the building, such as traffic or music, as well as those from within the building, through walls and ceilings are attenuated better by wood fibre than synthetic equivalents. In providing better protection from acoustic pollutants, occupants often report a building as being more restful and relaxing thereby encouraging better mental health. When a building is well-designed and well-built, occupants should be at their peak comfort. With the average person spending approximately 80% of their lives in enclosed rooms, an occupant’s well-being is imperative . Therefore, the products used to achieve this, should cover all the issues affecting a building’s construction, its impact on both its occupants and nature. For a free audit of whether natural insulation’s right for your project, visit www.ecomerchant.co.uk/protexion or call 01793 847 445.

GREAT BRITISH INNOVATION
Growth of manufacturer recognised at national design impact awards Sealant and adhesive manufacturer Polyseam has achieved the ultimate design accolade for the rebrand of its GRAFT product range. Aston Martin; Josh Berger, president and managing director of Warner Bros; and renowned entrepreneur Deborah Meaden.
The Yorkshire-headquartered company and its branding agency The Engine Room were both presented with a gold design impact trophy at the glittering DBA Design Effectiveness Awards in London. But the GRAFT project also went on to scoop the ultimate recognition of the evening when it was announced as the Grand Prix winner of winners at the end of the night. Since GRAFT’s launch in 2014, annual sales have increased by a staggering 744% and export levels have risen by more than £1million. In fact, this transformational business exercise has played a significant part in Polyseam now building a 50,000sqm factory which is expected to create a further 50 jobs by 2020. It was this bottom line impact that impressed the line-up of high-profile judges, which included Andy Palmer, CEO of
•30•
Commenting on the win, Polyseam’s marketing manager Olando Salina said: “The evolving challenges in the manufacturing market mean we must continually innovate to drive growth. We therefore focused on the development of an environmentally friendly, all-in-one adhesive and sealant created using our own in-house expertise. “This high-performance technology was already award-winning in its own right. But it didn’t achieve the traction we sought, which is why we engaged The Engine Room to help clarify our market position, overhaul the branding of this product range, and craft the communication materials we’d need moving forward. The Engine Room team has specific expertise in this field, and we were therefore delighted
when GRAFT was ‘born’. The project success is a testament to the collaboration of these forward-thinking business and design brains.” The Engine Room’s managing director Lesley Gulliver added: “The building, construction and manufacturing sectors are perhaps not renowned for their design prowess. But this project goes to show that strategic creative thinking is about much more than just what looks good. The overhaul of this product range and the development of the GRAFT brand has helped to revolutionise Polyseam’s entire business.” Polyseam has been independently manufacturing first-class brands for the majority of the world’s leading suppliers since 1993. The company manufactures more than 150 different products, and exports to 21 countries globally.

Walkability: The 11th step Variation on a theme - following in James Speck’s footsteps: “Walkable City - How downtown can save America, one step at a time” Curiously, this experience is shared by most of us in the modern era. We are travelling the world, “expecting” to find our way, with some obvious mundane difficulties. In an ideal world, it shouldn’t really go unnoticed. But it is. In my view, walkability should incorporate better common rules for outdoors wayfinding signage so that the average person may expect better orientation even in unfamiliar urban spaces.
Lancaster - the most walkable city in Pennsylvania
alkability, a relatively new term in modern Architecture and sustainable urban design, measuring how friendly an urban area is to walking. It pertains to health, environment, and economic benefits and discusses, among other things, the presence or absence and quality of footpaths, sidewalks or other pedestrian rights-of-way, traffic and road conditions, land use patterns, building accessibility, and safety.
W
In Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America, One Step at a Time (public library), city planner Jeff Speck argues that walkable cities would improve lives for American urban dwellers to greater extent than any attempts to create “greener” living conditions in the personal space. I found Kaid Benfield summary of Speck’s ten steps of walkability quite comprehensive for my further argument, and although I somewhat do
•32•
not agree with Benfield’s latter analysis, I think that one more important step is required. I am talking about wayfinding signage. One may argue that this is included in the entire concept of attractive building faces, traffic and road conditions or “comfort”. Yet it is often noticed only by its absence. Good wayfinding signage may encourage people to walk the city, to a greater extent than realized by many. Imagine that: You travel to a foreign country, unfamiliar with the language, trying to get from A to B using a somewhat inferior city map supplied by your hotel or local tourist office and simply cannot locate your current location and direction you need to go to. Sounds familiar? Wouldn’t better wayfinding signage (including street names, visible numbers, traffic signs, directions and building names) improve your orientation and comfort? Wouldn’t you give anything to be able to easily locate and read the signs?
Not only in America, but worldwide, inadequate wayfinding signage is often emanating from budget considerations, without realizing the human aspects of the issue. A beautiful building, complex, shopping mall or neighborhood is being built in the urban sphere - but around it and inside structures, people get lost. I challenge you to read Speck’s work with a fresh look at his previously suggested 10 good steps, thinking how wayfinding signage fits the overall scheme of things. 59mm S-Series Minimax super low-level floor gully Purus launch their brand new floor gully with a total height of just 59mm for both vinyl and tiled floor finishes
Purus, the Swedish manufacturer of floor gullies, is extremely proud to be launching their brand new product – the 59mm Minimax S-Series floor gully for both vinyl and tiled floor finishes.
Total floor drain height of just 59mm! Due to a change in screed depth requirements across the construction industry, Purus have taken the same successful technology as their Minimax 50 and made the gully even shallower: the S-Series gully has a total height of just 59mm including the combined water and mechanical NOOD trap, allowing it to fit into even shallower concrete slabs. With careful planning from the architect, the contractor can now avoid the problematic situation of having to install a vertical outlet floor gully through the slab, and can instead use the brand new 59mm S-Series floor gully from Purus. Stainless steel grates for vinyl and tiled floors are available.

RINNAI ANNOUNCES PRICE HOLD FOR SECOND YEAR, OTHERS HAVE PRICE INCREASES OF UPTO 5% REPORTED….. RINNAI HOT WATER – INSTANT, CONTINUOUS, LIMITLESS AND SENSIBLY ECONOMIC FOR EVERY TYPE OF COMMERCIAL SITE Rinnai, the UK leader in hot water heating units and systems for all commercial and residential sites, has announced that it is holding its price for the second year in succession - in the face of reports that some other manufacturers are increasing prices by almost 5%.
Tony Gittings. The Rinnai natural gas or LPG water heaters guarantee a limitless supply of accurately temperature controlled safe and useable hot water. The Rinnai range delivers energy saving performance and low greenhouse emissions through new low NOx burner technology.
Two other manufacturers are reportedly ghosting through price rises of between 3 - 4.5%.
All units and systems can be installed as stand-alone or manifolded to provide unlimited hot water for the largest of all commercial sites such as big hotels, busy gyms, high rise offices etc.
“We see no justification whatsoever to submit price increases and seek to stabilise market prices for our customers. We offer what we believe is a first-class product proposition of energy efficiency, economic cost in use, limitless hot water on demand where you only pay for the fuel you use to heat the water, completely compliant with all existing or pending UK and EU legislation”, says Rinnai Managing Director

Water temperature is and can be pre-set through easy-to-use built in digital controls, eliminating the risk of scalding. The newly updated Rinnai Infinity range is designed for use directly off the mains, with no need for large, ungainly and energy inefficient storage vessels. Rinnai Heavy
Duty water heaters are high efficiency gas continuous flow water heaters with outputs up to 69kW. Incoming water temperatures of up to 60°C are accepted, making the HD50i suitable for secondary return systems. Water can be delivered at high volume with minimum gas consumption. All models have full electronic ignition with no pilot light and operate on demand only, consuming no gas when not in use. All Rinnai internal HDC condensing continuous flow water heaters, are room-sealed, power flue appliances, while the external weatherproof models have forced exhaust which enables them to be compact, saving both floor and wall space.

Rinnai’s unique condensing technology incorporates two heat exchangers to achieve optimum water heating generated from every cubic metre of Natural Gas or LPG. The condensing process delivers up to 95% thermal efficiency, which translates to significant energy savings when compared to standard on-demand water heaters or conventional stored systems. Rinnai Gas Hot Water Storage Pack represents the best value-for-money solution on the market today with everything delivered direct to site in one complete package The pack consists of up to five heavy duty water heaters with an equal number of flue kits (for internal
heaters) or an equal number of pipe cover boxes (for external models) and sufficient valve packs. Also included is one hot water storage vessel (stainless steel 300L, 500L or 800L glass lined steel) along with necessary valves and one primary pump with valves and one unvented kit. Add to this an expansion vessel of either 50L or 80L capacity, two drain cocks, one tundish, a temperature and pressure relief valve along with a control thermostat, an overheat thermostat and the kit is complete. Common header flue systems are also available to further stream line the installation. Typical applications for the commercial ranges include cafés, children’s
nurseries, factories and offices, laundries with top loader machines, hotels and restaurants, sports clubs, shower blocks in caravan parks – and many more. Rinnai continuous flow hot water systems deliver on all levels in a cost effective and practical manner. Easy to install and operate the units provide a flexible and energy efficient solution for domestic applications and for all sectors of business and industry. What should you consider designing roof terraces? Space is often at a premium in the UK. In most of the country, around 20 per cent of households live in flats, many of which have no garden or balcony space. The problem is compounded in areas where most of the accommodation is apartments. One way to effectively increase the amount of outdoor living space on a property is to build a roof terrace, but where should you begin? During the early stages of the planning process, it is important for the design team to work closely with the homeowner or developer to determine exactly what is expected of the finished roof terrace and how it will be used.
•52•
Questions to ask when planning a roof garden include: • Will the space be used by children? • Will pets use the space? • How much time will be spent on the roof terrace? • How can you maximise the best views? • How will the outdoor terrace be made accessible? • Will you need walk-on roof lights for lighting up the space below? • What kind of lighting will be required? • What’s the microclimate like? While creating stunning visual elements and unique features within the design is key to unlocking a space that meets and exceeds expectations, safety and functionality must come first; this article outlines some important factors to consider.
Privacy and permissions Privacy is one of the most common reasons for planning permission to be denied. If there’s a chance that the roof terrace will look out over a neighbour’s property, then you will probably need to find a way to obstruct those views. For example, frosted glass balustrades or privacy screens may be required.
Access and safety Roof terrace access can be split into two main types:
1. Access from the same level – This
is often the result of an extension project, where a single-storey extension is added to a property, and the flat roof of the extension is turned into a terrace. In this situation, access can be fairly easy: a set of doors can be built into the existing upper-storey wall to provide access.
when 2. Access via stairs – If the roof is directly above the rest of the accommodation, then a set of stairs will need to be installed to provide a route to the terrace. Rooflights are a popular solution for roof terrace access; boxed or sliding rooflights for example can create the vertical space necessary for the staircase and the associated headspace clearance.
Building Regulations
• Approved Document K sets out the
requirements that must be met to prevent injuries due to falls, collisions and impacts. According to Approved Document K, there needs to be at least 2m of head clearance on any staircase (measured from the pitch line), while the width and length of a landing should be at least as great as the smallest width of the flight of stairs.
• Approved Document A – This part
of the building regulations requires that buildings be constructed so that combined dead, imposed and wind loads are sustained and transmitted to the ground safely and without causing deformation of any part of the building.
• Approved Document Q - This part of
the Building Regulations covers the standards for doors and windows to resist physical attack by a burglar. It also applies to some rooflights designed for flat roof applications, particularly those installed on the top of single-storey extensions.
All of the above will need to be considered when planning your dream roof terrace space. To offer a helping hand, Rooflights. com and Glazing Vision have created a comprehensive guide to planning and specifying roof terraces, which covers a range of issues surrounding design, structure and access.

If you still think of blinds just as blinds, chances are that you are somewhat left behind with your CPD’s. Should have tried harder ! The World has moved on; over the years when we thought of sunblinds it was simply a matter of fitting any old venetian or cloth in the window and we didn’t think any more of it, other than complaining it was still too bright, too dark or too hot in the rooms. This problem has become bigger over the years. Think about it ; floor to ceiling glass and lots of it. We let in natural daylight so we don’t have to switch on the lights, which of course is very ‘green’. We then conveniently forget we need to start cooling all that hot air and switch on the air conditioning, thereby consuming many more KiloWatts than a bit of lighting would have used. So, ‘blinds’ are out and ‘Solar Shading’ is in! The old wisdom that said internally fitted blinds was no good as the heat is already in has gone out of the windows with the advance of Solar Shading fabrics that can now achieve g-values ( Total energy penetration degrees) of less than 20%, and that is almost, within a few % , on a par with external shading but without the maintenance issues.
•54•
Solar shading has become highly technical and there really is no ‘off the shelf’ solution or a ‘one fits all’ scenario. We can go from light transmissions of 50% down to Blackout materials, albeit the most used ones these days are the 1,3,5 and 10% open fabrics, depending on whether we deal with private dwellings or office buildings. Solar Shading; there is a lot more to it than meets the eye and we will happily come to see you to explain and make your building an environmental success. Contact us at info@deleeuw-ltd.co.uk

The ‘Ultimet’ Energy Saving Blind 3 Window Blinds in 1 Insulation improved – reducing heating costs Heat gain from the sun reduced – lowering cooling costs Lighting costs down – controlled levels of natural light
All in One Blind The Ultimetal fabric with the high levels of solar reflectance and low levels of emissivity afforded by its metallised coating provide industry leading levels of shading performance. The 50+ years’ experience of weaving glass-fibre based shading fabrics producing the highest levels of performance from the thinnest of materials. The Ultimetal fabric is less than one quarter of a millimetre thick, permitting a blind of over 3.0 metres in height to be stored in a cassette of less than 55mm square. Powder coated to match the window frames, the blinds become almost invisible.

Light transmission levels for the fabric in single figures can remove glare, improving workspaces and comfort zones alike. Solar reflectance (Rs) of over 70% can reduce heat gain through the glass by 25%, 40% to over 50% dependant on glass properties. The blinds also improve the insulation of the window by 15%, 20%, 30% or more, reducing temperature loss.

Bring magic to your home with new Disney blinds From Anna and Elsa’s enchanted world to Winnie the Pooh and his friends, the new Disney & VELUX Goodnight Collection will add the perfect touch of magic and creativity to your children’s room.
Add some night-time magic to your children’s room with VELUX’s new series of Disney blinds. Whether it is Anna and Elsa, or Olaf the snowman from Disney’s Frozen; Lightning McQueen from Disney/Pixar Cars or Winnie the Pooh and his friends, give your children the chance to fall asleep with a “good night” to their favourite Disney characters. “We are so delighted to give children the chance to decorate their room with their favorite Disney characters on a roof window blind. The 2018 blinds collection features blockbuster hits Disney/Pixar Cars and Disney’s Frozen, adored all over the world, as centerpieces of the range,” says Grant Sneddon, product manager for VELUX. The collection will be available from February 2018 and is the third children’s blinds collection, where Disney has teamed up with global roof window leader VELUX Group to create a beautiful range of blinds depicting the popular Disney narratives and characters in stylish and elegant designs.
Elegant designs and contemporary colors Comprising nine different and unique designs, the collection combines contemporary colours in an elegant and harmonious mix to cater to style- and quality-focused consumers. There is something for every taste, soft or bold colours, action or epic dramas. “We are excited to see how these diverse and magical designs will be received by children and parents alike as we have aimed the range to cater to every taste,” says Sneddon.
More darkness for a better night’s sleep For parents who are looking to ensure their child’s bedroom is set with the best possible sleeping conditions, these blackout blinds are also perfect, as they offer a lightproof seal for total darkness at any time of day.
•56•
“We hope these beautiful designs will be appreciated not only for aesthetic reasons but also because they help create the optimum conditions to ensure a good night’s sleep”, concludes Sneddon. Studies focusing on the importance of sleep have documented how “healthy darkness” is a prerequisite for a good night’s sleep, as our body is more sensitive to light at night. Our body follows a 24-hour cycle and small amounts of light can disturb our sleep at night. Long hours of undisturbed sleep are essential for everyone, but for children in particular. They need a good night’s sleep to grow and feel vigorous in the daytime, whether they are at home, in the nursery or at school.
High quality materials All blinds are made of dirt-resistant OEKO-TEX® fabrics and provide complete blackout and light control. With the new Disney & VELUX Goodnight Collection design meets quality and functionality, offering children and parents the opportunity to turn rooms into playful environments, where a magical universe comes together with optimal sleeping conditions.

Schueco UK Announces New Enhanced Range of Sliding Doors New from sustainable building envelope specialist, Schueco UK, is a range of superior sliding door systems that provide a complete and elegant solution for highspecification domestic properties.
C
overing both sliding and lift-and-slide doors, the new Schueco ASE 60 & 80 platform comprises fifteen opening types including six single-track options. The result is greater choice, maximum design flexibility and the ability to accommodate widely differing project requirements.
A Design Line option is available on all the doors. Design Line offers enhanced design benefits such as concealed fittings that leave the visible surfaces of the vent and outer frame completely flush and a slimline interlock with a 40 mm sight-line that delivers today’s preferred ‘more glass, less frame’ look allowing maximum light transmission.
Schueco ASE 60 and 80 doors have a basic frame depth of either 60 mm or 80 mm with a maximum vent size of 3.2 m x 3.5 m, which is the largest currently being offered in the market. The inclusion of SmartStop and SmartClose technology ensures safe, trouble-free operation.
Both systems exhibit exceptional thermal performance. The Schueco ASE 60, in spite of its narrow depth, offers Uw of up to 1.1 W/m2K, while the high-performance Schueco ASE 80.HI meets stringent Passive House standards.
Maximum vent weights are equally impressive, with both systems being able to accommodate loads of up to 350 kg, offering the possibility of enhanced thermal performance through triple glazing. Rollers positioned in the middle of the vent distribute the weight evenly, minimising friction and ensuring that vents move particularly smoothly.
Additional features of the Schueco ASE 60 & 80 platform include profiles that, being symmetrically identical, enable the vent to be positioned on either the inside or the outside. For full details of the new Schueco ASE 60 & 80 range of sliding doors, please email mkinfobox@schueco.com

STEEL FOR KITCHEN Q: Want your kitchen to have impact? A: Install ‘on-trend’ steel-framed glazed internal screens and windows… ‘Metallics’ will be everywhere, say interior trend experts. So, if you’re revamping your kitchen, for glamour and elegance, you can’t go wrong with ‘on-trend’ steel partitioning screens and windows. Rather than putting in a dividing wall, blocking-out light, a great alternative is installing an interior steel screen, which lets light flood-in. Complementing flooring and décor, their reflective properties make small areas seem bigger, add warmth and a cosy feel to shady areas.
“The kitchen is the home’s focal point. So along with choosing the styling of cupboards, storage, worktops and appliances, and where you put the coffee station or breakfast bar, getting the windows and doors just right is important too,” says Stuart Judge, managing director of Crittall Windows, makers of steel window frames, screens and doors for almost 170 years. “A kitchen’s design, how it’s lit internally, and openings to natural outside light through windows and doors, impact. If you’re knocking down a brick, or plaster-board wall, a steel frame screen is an ideal addition for maximising daylight in the kitchen and adjoining rooms; be it the living room or lobby.” Steel is three times the strength of aluminium and achieves strong, stylish frames combining slim profiles. This allows large expanses of glass, bringing-in essential natural daylight, visually enhancing living space and functionality. Mr Judge continues: “The outside can be seamlessly, dramatically, fused with the inside living space, giving a sense of well-being through a clear view of the outdoors - your patio, flower beds, shrubs and trees.” Further dimension Crittall brings a further dimension to a kitchen through its minimalist style windows and its InnerVision glazed steel partitioning screens. Designed for modern living, they provide a sense of space and light with clean lines, subtle detailing, excellent technical properties. Elegantly slender, the slim steel framing, with single or double opening doors, is unobtrusive. The distinguished-looking installation makes a wonderful talking point. Natural illumination inside is maximised, while enhanced acoustic properties ensure privacy and reduced noise levels, without compromising on security. Chilly draughts are prevented, warmth kept-in for year-round comfort. InnerVision steel frames can be powder-coated to your choice of RAL or BS colours. Each screen is bespoke to your application - panel shape and size, single or double glazing, decorative or obscure glass. Natalie Benes, associate architect at Stiff+Trevillion comments: “Crittall windows are a great on-trend option if you want a light and airy feel with an industrial aesthetic. Their slender minimalist frames allow as much light as possible into a space, working well with contemporary architecture and in period properties.
“Steel partitions can be used really successfully as divisions between, or within rooms, whilst still letting light and views through into adjoining spaces. They enable practical physical separations without making a space feel too small and enclosed.”
