TURKISHCERAMICS AND FERHAN AZMAN TO COLLABORATE AT 100% Making its UK debut at 100% Design 2013, Turkishceramics is collaborating with Londonbased architect and interior designer, Ferhan Azman, founder of Azman Architects, to design chockablock, a ceramic installation for the International Pavilion that will provide a bar, meeting areas, a private events space and a VIP area. Turkishceramics is the lead sponsor of the new International Pavilion at this year’s event. The word ‘chockablock’ derives from the Turkish word ‘Çok Kalabalık’ meaning a place that is full of people or things. Set to be the new social destination for 100% Design, the 58m long bar showcases the quality and variety of contemporary Turkish ceramics. Colourful, textured tiles cover the installation’s main bar and dramatic columns which establish the chockablock façade. The installation integrates bar space, meeting areas and VIP area with bold accents of colour including black, bronze, green, red and blue.

INTERNATIONAL CONSORTIA AWARDED CONTRACTS FOR RIYADH METRO

OMA MASTERPLANS NEW CIVIC CENTRE IN COLOMBIA

The Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) has announced the two winning international consortia who will oversee the design and construction of Riyadh’s new $22.5 billion metro system.

OMA’s New York office has been selected in an international design competition to masterplan 680 acres of mixed use development in Bogotá consisting of government offices, residences, educational facilities, cultural venues and retail. The design was led by partner-in-charge Shohei Shigematsu.

The contract awards are the next major step in the development of the largest public transport project in the world, the Riyadh Public Transport Project. Riyadh Metro Transit Consultants (“RMTC”), a joint venture between US firm Parsons and French firms Egis and Systra, has been awarded the first project and construction management contract. RMTC will be responsible for managing metro lines 1, 2 and 3. These lines will be designed and built by the BACS and Arriyadh New Mobility group consortia. The contract is valued at USD 556 million.

The Bogotá Centro Administrativo Nacional (CAN) is positioned as a new civic centre, located at the midpoint of Calle 26 Avenue, the city’s main axis that has symbolically charted its growth from the historic downtown to the airport and the international gateway of Colombia. With a footprint as large as the National Mall in Washington DC, this new city centre will serve as the city’s government headquarters, with additional mixed use programs of residential, educational, retail and cultural developments. Shohei Shigematsu, Director of OMA New York, commented, “Our proposal enables CAN to be a lively node, providing a continuous public domain that curves through the site to connect the park, the university and Calle 26. With a single gesture, the arc achieves a clear urban identity while accommodating programmatic diversity.”

WIEL ARETS ARCHITECTS COMPLETE CAMPUS HOOGVLIET Campus Hoogvliet is located just outside of Rotterdam and composed of six separate buildings that together compose one academic and socially focused community catalyst Campus Hoogvliet is a cluster of six buildings that together compose one academic and socially focused campus, located just outside of Rotterdam. These six new buildings–a sports center, an art studio, a safety academy, 100 residential units within one building, and two schools–have been plugged into a programmed tarmac that communicates the campus’ boundary, and includes custom designed seating, a running track, and other place-making denotations. The campus’ immediate surroundings are characterized by mid-twentieth century housing developments–which were period of post-WWII growth–and the campus aims to rectify the social and cultural deterioration that coupled the demolition of this once historic village. building. Every fence is fritted with an abstracted, pixilated image of ivy, so as to create an exterior terrace that is both private and transparent. The ground

A white ring surrounds every building and denotes the transition from public tarmac to private terrace, each programmed with bike parking and play areas. All six buildings share a similar procession of entry: spaces compress in volume when transitioning from the campus’ tarmac toward the glass-fenced terraces; and compress again when traversing circulation paths toward upper levels.

GE to supply LED fixtures to 200 Walmart stores worldwide Asda stores in the UK are leading the way in a global fit out of LED lighting fixtures in the stores of its parent company Walmart. The fixtures are supplied by GE, and Walmart says they will use 40 per cent less energy than the lighting historically used in stores. The project will start this month with Asda, where the fixtures will be used in ten new stores this year. Walmart says that sales floor lighting is around 90 per cent of each building’s total

lighting usage, and the move will reduce stores’ energy use by 5 per cent just in the US. In the US the move to LEDs is expected to produce an energy saving of 340,000 kilowatt hours per store – equating to more than $34,000 in savings per year in each store (figured at 10.13 cents per kWh). In total 200 new Walmart stores will adopt the new GE LED ceiling lighting over the next two years, Walmart says this amounts to total energy savings of 620 million kWh over the next decade.

“We have worked to find and scale energy-efficient LED lighting solutions that are cost effective and high quality, and now working with GE, we’re paving the way to make this a mainstream solution for the retail industry,” said Doug McMillon, president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. “LEDs have become an integral part of our energy efficiency model for our stores and play a key role in achieving our overall sustainability goals. Just as important, the energy cost savings coming from these innovations will help us maintain the low prices our customers depend on us to provide.” In store Walmart will use a range of GE lighting technologies, with Lumination IS Series luminaires being prominently used in ceiling applications.

MORE BIG NAMES FLOCK TO MANCHESTER

Lebus Upholstery and Westbridge Furniture are the latest big names to confirm attendance at this year’s Manchester Furniture Show (July 13 – 16, Manchester Central). For Lebus it marks a return to the main exhibition event with a 260m2 stand in the main hall. Also lined up for Central Hall and its first ever appearance at Manchester is Westbridge Furniture. Said Westbridge md Paul Islip: “We have an exciting launch to make this summer and Manchester offered us exactly the right timing and platform to do so.”

Karl Walker, md for Lebus said: “We are delighted to be exhibiting in Central Hall after years of hotel exhibitions. Manchester is a very important part of our exhibition programme and we firmly believe that our new stand location best suits the needs of our customers and offers the perfect environment to exhibit our latest collections.” The show itself is set to have the most prestigious brand line-up to date with Central Hall heading for an early sell out.

Said Furniture Fairs co-director Theresa Raymond: “We’re delighted to welcome Lebus back into the fold and to have secured Westbridge for the first time. With Corndell, Baker Furniture, Buoyant, Furmanac, Furniture Origins, Morris Group, Greenapple, Kingstown, Wood Bros and La-z-Boy also set to attend we believe the show will be a Must See event for retailers across the country.

Make your bed a design statement One of the things you notice about many of the modern upmarket spa and boutique hotels is the minimalistic approach to design. Not for these contemporary venues is the design clutter and colour density associated with the more traditional, dare we say, stuffy hotels. It’s not just hotels doing this because interior designers are also moving towards plain simple decors allowing items like pictures and ornaments to add just enough tone and colour to any room. You may well have noticed how beds are also being used to add that splash of colour and design? At King of Cotton we have been quietly adding to our ranges with bed coverings that allow the designer to use the bed as a major factor in colouring and colour coordination. For instance the Diamond Weave range of runners, throws and cushion covers shown, in their 6 statement colours, can bring any room to life and add a focal dimension to any understated bedroom. The Santorini bedding collection in 300 thread count pure Egyptian cotton bedding has a duvet cover featuring ‘polka dot’ design which can be matched or contrasted with the plain grey coloured coordinated sheets. The retro-buttoned pillowcases are available in plain grey and in the polka-dot design with a contrasting grey edge. The key is that the plainly decorated bedroom can accommodate both traditional and contemporary styled bedding and look smart, modern and desirable as shown by the more ostentatious Excelsior bedspread and cushion covers. All the designs mentioned in this article are shown on the page but there is a whole website full of ideas at kingofcotton.co.uk

I openly tell people that I don’t make cheap kitchens, I make good-quality kitchens, so I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise when I say I always err on the side of caution when it comes to working with new products.” With the housing market on the move again, Steve didn’t want to turn work away but he desperately needed to he could capitalise on the upturn in enquiries. “I’d been manufacturing my own kitchen carcases for over 15 years,” he explains. “It was labour intensive but with nothing on the market that could rival the quality and effectiveness of my own carcases, I had no choice but to continue making them myself.” After seeing a demonstration of Unilin’s ClicBox at the end of last year during the May Design Series, Steve couldn’t resist giving it a go himself and in under a minute, he had was seriously impressed,” he recalls. “Not only was it quick to assemble, it was just as sturdy as my made-to-order carcases and offered my customers designs.” ClicBox also ticked the box when it came to quality. “I was surprised how much thought

had gone into the design of this product,” he adds. “Even the wall units had been made 30mm wider than a standard base unit allowing for a fullsize dinner plate to be stored easily. It’s this type of thing that gives me an edge over the competition.” Steve’s also impressed with Proud to offer design without limits, he needed a carcase possibilities his customers expected. The smart drilling pattern, which has been designed to match a range of and drawer liners can be added without the need to drill extra holes, providing customers with complete control over their kitchen. And, with help from Unilin’s UK distributor HPP, Steve can order from a range of forty-two cabinet sizes and formats in any colour for next day deliver. Now Steve has time on his side, he’s busy creating a new showroom that includes a ClicBox kitchen display. Without the need to manufacture carcases himself, he’s also had the time to explore new opportunities and opened a new market with a local housing what Unilin, the makers of ClicBox, have been saying for a while: “Thanks to ClixBox, I’m kitchens and less time creating carcases.” And that’s what it’s

Building Privacy into your Bangkok Garden Thai Garden Design recently designed and installed this shade pergola and privacy wall for a couple in Bangkok, Thailand. The couple's home had a side garden, which constitutes the main portion of their garden space. To one side the wall was very low and so it was like living with their neighbours who would come out into their garden often, so there was very little privacy between the two houses. The estate management company stipulated clearly that there was to be no construction on top of the neighbouring walls (which the other neighbour had ignored) but the couple wanted to abide by these regulations, and so the team came up with a solution to sit the of the garden without have to interfere one corner was located a waterfall and pond). The other end of the pergola was supported with beams attached to the house wall.

The design completely covers this section of the garden, and even during these hot periods it is very cool due to the amount of shade created. The team also built in a polycarbon roof, to keep out rain, as well as a guttering system to evacuate water into the outer drains. The couple supplied lights and fans, which the team duly If you live in Thailand and are looking for a reliable friendly and professional landscaping and garden design and installation service, you’re in the right place. Alfresco FLOORS Launch extensive and exclusive range of exterior grade porcelain tiles. Tougher than timber. Stronger than stone. Frost proof, fire proof, impermeable to water and pretty much bullet proof to daily damage – ‘double depth’ 20mm porcelain tiles are already hugely popular for external projects all over mainland Europe, and yet still the best kept landscaping secret here in the UK. All that seems set to change with a company called Alfresco Floors, who are now launching an extensive and exclusive range of exterior grade porcelain tiles to our commercial, residential and domestic markets. Over the past few years two major technological advances have allowed the ceramics industry to create this new

generation of tiles. Firstly, the invention of industrial grade ink-jet printing technology has allowed incredibly high resolution digital designs to be ‘sprayed’ onto the 3D surface of textured tiles, and then ‘baked on’ - to create beautiful, impermeable products that will never fade, never stain, never scratch, never corrode, never suffer from molds or moss and cannot suffer frost damage. Secondly, the introduction of incredibly powerful pneumatic presses now allows these ceramics factories to create porcelain tiles which are 20mm thick and up to 1.2 metres long. These ‘double depth’ slabs are twice the size of a traditional

internal tile and so strong that even when supported on a pedestal raised floor system, each tile will take the weight of a car. In short, these new porcelain tiles are actually better suited to life outdoors than either natural timber or natural stone, and yet cost less than both of those alternatives. Alfresco Floors Limited have now arranged exclusive supply deals with the two Italian manufacturers most experienced and most creative in producing these tiles, and have launched a range of over 50 different products which will provide lighter, cheaper and more durable alternatives to both natural stone and hardwood decking.

I-CLAD OFFERS REFRESHING

INTERIORS IN 2014 Brick cladding specialist Eurobrick is set to help architects and interior designers keep on trend with its interior I-Clad system. Design trends come and go, but the popularity of brick as an interior finish seems unwavering. It is widely acknowledged that brick is a much-loved building material, but using whole bricks to create a desired interior is not always practicable. Brick slip cladding specialist Eurobrick has a simple system designed for interior use. Known as I-Clad, it comprises a thin backer panel that is fixed to the existing wall and then faced with bricks. The beauty of I-Clad is that the slim profile reduces the loss of much valued floor space. Installation is quick and straightforward, a key factor

when working to tight schedules. The finished wall is low maintenance and robust. The slim profile of Eurobrick’s I-Clad system, and its low weight, makes it an ideal product for application to existing masonry or stud walls. A wide pallet of colours and textures allows designers to achieve a breadth of looks and styles. John Mayes, managing director of Eurobrick, understands the appeal of I-Clad for interior designers saying:

“I-Clad enables designers to add character, warmth and texture to a room’s interior with minimal fuss. They love the wide range of colours and textures we offer and the fact that the pointing mortar also comes in different colours, allowing the designer to strike a contrast or complement the brick choice. “In addition, the price of brick slips varies greatly according to the style of brick, meaning that that the desired finish can be achieved within most project budgets.”

Last year Reco designed a moulded Acrylic capped ABS tile panel and their latest products ‘Reco Tile’ and ‘Reco Space’ really do demand attention. The award winning Gabbertas Studio was commissioned to create a range of dramatic range that pushes the boundaries of what has previously be possible with tiles. The Reco Designer Range draws upon collaborations with illustrators and photographers, further demonstrating the breadth of this new medium’s flexibility.
