ACTION! FOR PINEWOOD JAMstudio student's work DESIGN SCHEME Pinewood Studios, one of the world’s leading destinations for the makers of film, television, commercials and video games, has been granted planning consent for new offices and workshops, designed by Fletcher Priest. The innovative new development provides highly flexible workspaces that are naturally ventilated with generous volumes and excellent daylighting for a wide variety of users, including specialist workshops and production facilities. The new workspaces will extend the operations at Pinewood and add to the 250 other independent businesses housed by the Pinewood Studios Group providing expertise, equipment and support to the creative industries. The detailed consent is part of the original approved Pinewood masterplan and follows the recent approval for the Pinewood Studios Development Framework (PSDF), a £200m long-term scheme of national significance designed to address increasing global demand for production facilities in the UK and deliver growth for the next 15 years.

Lauren Jenkins, Architectural Assistant at Aberdeen-based JAMstudio, the multi awardwinning RIAS chartered architectural practice, has had her work selected to be presented at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh as part of the New Contemporaries Exhibition 2015. The RGU student, who recently passed her Master’s of Architecture course with distinction, completed her thesis on implementing a more radical approach of high density design to the empty and rundown back land areas in Peterhead. This was part of a wider collaborative team project, which investigated the creation of 'Resilient towns'. The curated annual exhibition that focuses on emerging artists and architects in Scotland is expected to run Q1 2015.

Development at Great Ormond Street Hospital The next phase of Great Ormond Street Hospital's development programme commenced in July. The Premier Inn Clinical Building is set to complete the Mittal Children’s Medical Centre, following on from the successful opening of the highly regarded Morgan Stanley Clinical Building in 2012. Both phases have been planned and designed by Llewelyn Davies, who as Design Team Leaders will work together with Skanska to deliver the project for 2017. The new building is part of an on-going programme to redevelop some of the oldest parts of the hospital, replacing outdated wards with world class facilities and providing more space for parents to stay by their child’s bedside. It will include new inpatient wards with more spacious bedrooms, integrated operating theatres and a post anaesthetic care unit. t4t

Talking in more detail about her work, Lauren said: “My research focussed heavily on the implementation of higher density housing through various housing styles and design, utilising the idea of creating a sense of place and community as a catalyst for bringing people back the town centre. By doing so it looks to combat the current trend of low-density suburban sprawl. Drawing inspiration from areas such as Aberdeen’s Footdee, and other contemporary housing schemes in the UK and abroad, I created a series of sheltered and intimate spaces that encourage social interaction and aspire to generate a strong sense of community.

A matter of defence HLM has been appointed to the new £250 million Defence College of Logistics, Policing and Administration at Worthy Down in Hampshire. Working alongside Skanska, HLM designed the winning scheme, which is part of a Ministry of Defence (MoD) project to upgrade the site as well as redevelop its Princess Royal Barracks in Deepcut, Surrey. The contract includes the design, construction, and mechanical and electrical fit-out of the site’s living quarters and facilities, as well as the supporting infrastructure for new buildings at Worthy Down. It will also accommodate the headquarters for the Royal Logistic Corps and the Adjutants Generals Corps, along with other logistic and personnel training elements of the armed forces. HLM has designed the site to ensure it has future expansion capabilities. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), the MoD’s property and services provider, awarded the contract to Skanska and HLM. HLM is also the architect and masterplanner for the Deepcut site, which will be redeveloped to provide 1,200 homes, a school and other community facilities. Chris Liddle, lead designer for the project and Chairman at HLM, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to support the MoD in creating new, world class facilities for our armed forces. It will also provide much-needed housing and amenities for the people of Deepcut village. Both locations will benefit from our understanding and experience of working with the MoD, as well as our strong reputation for sustainable design. “HLM celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, during which time we have worked extensively in the defence sector, and securing this major project further strengthens our position. We have worked hard to become a trusted partner to the public sector and will bring the same high quality architecture and facilities to both Worthy Down and Deepcut, as we have before with award-winning schemes such as the Defence Academy and Welbeck College.”

Rekindling Art deco heritage Aukett Swanke’s extensive £30 million renovation of the Adelphi, central London’s Art Deco landmark, is underway and on track for completion at the end of Summer 2015.

Thriving horticultural education in Battersea Park Pedder & Scampton have completed a new landmark building for national charity Thrive in Battersea Park, London. The new purpose-built training building will greatly enhance the activities of Thrive, a charity that has been working within Battersea Park for 25 years, teaching gardening and life skills (horticultural therapy) to those with learning, physical, sensory impairment and mental health disabilities.

The refurbishment, carried out on behalf of Blackstone, will upgrade and modernise the 190,000 sq ft of open office space shared across the first six floors of the grade II-listed building. Aukett Swanke’s design concept was to introduce extensive natural light to the floorplates, enhancing the Adelphi’s working environment. The building’s original lightwells are to be reinstated while the existing tinted glazing will be replaced with high-performance clear units, transforming the façade. The main entrance foyer onto John Adam Street is being restored and the design includes dramatic new interior elements reflecting the Adelphi’s Art Deco heritage. A new double height reception area has been introduced to Savoy Place which, together with the reopened entrance to Adelphi Terrace, reinvigorates the building’s original street entrances.

t6t

The design responds to a brief for a stronger visual identity for Thrive in the park, enhanced facilities that are economic and efficient to run, and excellent sustainability credentials. The distinctive design replaces a collection of ramshackle huts and portacabins, and establishes a two-element building that curves to a radius centred on the large plane tree that dominates the site. The first element is a glazed ‘orangery’ that forms an entrance space and circulation zone as well as a working area for ‘dirty’ activities. This space is designed to be left open to the garden all day throughout the year, accessed through ‘up and over’ doors. Unheated, this robust space is lined with plywood and benches, and can accommodate large numbers of muddy boots.

IBI designs unveiled for Dubai research centre GHD, IBI Nightingale and Al Jalila Foundation have unveiled the design concept for Al Jalila Foundation Research Centre in Dubai. This will be the first standalone medical research centre in the UAE and will focus on five regional health challenges: diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and mental health. Once established, the new AED 100m centre will undertake medical research programmes in purpose built facilities. The new 10-storey building is to be co-located with a major new academic health science centre within Dubai Healthcare City. It will have three floors of research laboratories, as well as clinic spaces, administration and spaces for other partner organisations. IBI Nightingale has been assisting Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, and his team establish the vision for the project, and will shortly be progressing with a fast track programme of design development as part of a multi-disciplinary team headed by GHD. Tony Burley, Project Director at IBI Nightingale, commented: “This is an exciting opportunity for us to develop a high quality landmark project, designed to embody the vision and values of Al Jalila Foundation. The curved form and elegant external treatment of the new Medical Research Centre is intended to give a focus to the Heart of the Dubai Healthcare City Masterplan and complement the massing that will complete the campus”.

Waitrose design rollout for Farrell & Clark Award winning architects, Farrell & Clark’s new outlets for British supermarket chain Waitrose have recently opened in Bedford, Wootton and Oundle to great success. Planning applications for several more new local Waitrose stores across the country have also been submitted by the practice. Based in London and Leeds, Farrell & Clark have a reputation for delivering quality architecture in the public and commercial sectors. Strong and lasting business partnerships are at the heart of their success, none more so than those forged with Waitrose and the John Lewis Partnership over a period of 20 years. The London based team started their journey into retail in the 1980’s when they were contracted by Kimberley Developments Plc to work on a shell project for Waitrose. Over the years, the office has worked on more than 15 Waitrose outlets with Kimberley, moving into general fit out projects direct with Waitrose as well as continuing to build shells. Farrell & Clark now provide a full service to Waitrose whilst retaining Kimberley as a client on other projects. More recently, in 2012, Farrell & Clark were appointed lead consultant on the very first Waitrose and John Lewis at Home. This 100,000ft2 outlet in Ipswich Cranes was the first time Waitrose and John Lewis at Home units were designed to be adjacent to each other. As the layout requires less floor space per unit, this flexibility has allowed John Lewis to move into more locations across the country and there are now currently five food and home stores.

Cambridge Forum medical and education centre given go-ahead Planning has been granted by Cambridge City Council for The Forum, an innovative £120 million mixed-use medical and education facility on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The Forum, designed by architects NBBJ, is the product of a pioneering joint venture between John Laing and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUHT). Consisting of a post-graduate medical education centre, 900 delegate conference centre, 90-bed private hospital, and fourstar hotel, The Forum will bring together local, national and international medical professionals, researchers and academics from around the world all focused on the development of lifechanging treatments. The scheme has been privately funded but allows CUHT to retain freehold ownership of the site. Forum Cambridge LLP (a joint venture between John Laing and CUHT) will operate the new building which will contain a Ramsay Health Care UK private hospital and a Crowne Plaza hotel. Dr Keith McNeil, Chief Executive of Cambridge University Hospital, commented: “Achieving planning permission is a key step in bringing better treatments to patients. It will provide a fantastic opportunity for research professionals and clinicians from Cambridge and around the globe to work closely together on new research and practices in healthcare. The addition of a new post-graduate education centre, hotel and conference centre and other facilities will further cement our reputation as one of the world’s leading medical cities.”

Alvar Aalto museum in Denmark to be modernised Is it possible to make an extensive restoration of a listed building without destroying the original architecture? This is the tough challenge facing a Danish art museum, which was designed by the world-famous architect, Alvar Aalto. Museum of Modern Art houses a unique collection of contemporary art by Danish and foreign artists. But it is not only the collection that is unique; so is the building. It is the only museum outside of Finland to be designed by the world-renowned architect, Alvar Aalto. In 1957 he conceived the design of the museum in collaboration with Elissa Aalto and Jean-Jacques Baruël. The result was an art museum which is a work of art in itself. The building was designed in a light, organic, modernist style with an entirely unique distinctive inflow of light. Throughout the building, the choice of materials is unique: ranging from the custom-designed copper Aalto lights to the marble on the floors and outer walls. Today, this museum building is listed. So it is no wonder that the building’s imminent and radical restoration and modernisation have caused quite a stir. The renovation will be carried out by Erik Møller Arkitekter, whose previous renovation projects include such famous Danish buildings as the Royal Danish Theatre and Amalienborg, the principal residence of the Danish monarch. The architects’ mission is to create a modern, highly efficient museum within the existing framework. Trine Neble of Erik Møller Arkitekter, commented, “We want to maintain Aalto and Baruël’s architectural vision for the building, both inside and out. That means that all surfaces and details will be retained or recycled, wherever possible. On one hand, it is cheaper and more sustainable to reuse existing resources. On the other hand, the minimal extension will leave the listed building as it was originally conceived”.

Purcell completes listed Navy storehouse The Babcock Galleries at The National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard have opened to the public following a £4.5 million renovation led by architects Purcell and project managers Artelia. The opening coincides with the centenary of the First World War. The Galleries house a major new permanent exhibition; ‘Hear My Story’, which tells 100 years of life in the Navy and covers the personal stories from those who served at sea. The Babcock Galleries are housed within an 18th century naval storehouse. Storehouse 10 is a Grade I listed brick and timber framed building. Before major works were carried out the brickwork, which had suffered from erosion, was repaired and the timbers were stripped back. One of its most significant characteristics is the building’s floor, which in certain areas is made up of Spanish ship’s timbers. A raised floor has been installed above the timbers to protect them and glass vision panels inserted so that they can still be viewed. This fully reversible solution creates a void for all services to run beneath the floor and ensures level access. A new, single storey glazed link was conceived as a transition space between the two listed buildings, Storehouse 10 and Storehouse 11. The design was technically demanding as the ground between the buildings is not level. As part of the concept, the overall thickness of the roof structure had to be the same depth as the stone band of the two flanking storehouses. A terne coated stainless steel roof finish was specified, which allows the roof to be laid to a shallow fall and is suitable for the marine environment with longevity equivalent to lead roof finishes. Taking pride of place in the centre of the new link space is the ‘4 inch’ gun from the destroyer HMS Lance which fired the very first shot of the war at sea in WW1.

Rustic Oak is an established family run business based in Essex that designs and makes bespoke oak furniture. Based on the family farm we have been producing beautiful oak furniture for nearly ten years. We specialise in our handmade dining tables that are made from 5 year seasoned English oak and have a uniquely chunky look with solid 90mm thick tops. We create various different styles from a classic Refectory table, our unique Waney edge tables to more contemporary designs like our Cube base tables. As well as the dining tables we also produce various other ranges of furniture to go throughout the home. Our Chunky oak beam coffee tables are hand made from English green oak beams that will naturally season and mature over time creating shakes and splits adding to their already considerable character. As well as the coffee tables we make bathroom sink units from the green oak beams, these are a popular and stylish item that make a real statement and set the room apart from others. To compliment these items we also have a wide range of side tables, TV units, pedestals and bookcases. Our workshop is always open to anyone that wishes to see the oak we use and the production process, finishes and meet us to discuss your design ideas.

Harrie Leenders Pharos - The Pharos Interior is a modern and naturally shaped fire. The fire is fixed to the ceiling and this makes for a spatial effect. This modern, organically shaped fire gives the fire a central place in the living room. The stove is more than just a functional source of heat, it is also a work of art adding value to any space. Pharos Interior is marked by its spatial design. The stove can be suspended from the ceiling by an ingenious construction, and can be installed to be fully, partly or not rotatable as desired. The outer casing is made of high-grade cast aluminium. The interior is made of thick sheet steel and has a refractory bottom of ceramic material. The small glass window in the door opening is slightly curved, accentuating the organic form of Pharos. The fire is available in various colour combinations and can be made to measure for different ceiling heights. The art of design. Smoothly rotating, thus affording all the space you need to enjoy its style, design and welcome warmth all around - Design by Jos Muller

Rais Juno Soapstone - The Rais Juno stove displays superior qualities, since 388 kg of hot stone accumulate the combustion heat and still are above 60 degrees next morning! To enable this the stove needs to be nice and hot at bedtime. This stove combines both convection and the principle of heat storage. Juno is a state-of-the-art and almost sculptural wood-burning stove, where the beautifully rounded, light natural stones stand in striking contrast to the fire and the shiny glass and steel. Elegant, slim and stylish, with impressive simplicity! It is available with rotary base, offering an optimal view of the fire and its cosy effect. Please note the excellent data for particle emission and environmental friendliness. Can also be installed with AIR-System, designed for well insulated low-energy houses.

Piazzetta Line - Original shaped majolica cladding frames the firebox, giving the appliance a particularly innovative look that goes hand in hand with the latest technology. Multifuoco SystemŽ Three speed forced ventilation system. Warm air ducting up to 16 m, Multifunction remote control, LCD display, timer, thermostat and Multicomfort function, Programming Daily, weekly and weekend modes. CHARLIE LUXTON INTERVIEW Charlie Luxton is spokesperson for The London Homebuilding & Renovating and Home Improvement Show as well as sustainable architectural designer and presenter of More4’s ‘Building the Dream’. We interview Charlie to find out more… Charlie Luxton

HDA: What was the first sign of interest you had in architectural design? CL: During a visit to Castle Drogo (designed by Edwin Lutyens) in Devon aged 13. My father was explaining an element of the roof design to me and being in that space made me realise there was a lot more to building than met the eye; my interest grew from there. HDA: When first starting out, which artist inspired you? CL: A few different ones, Lutyens initially, but I looked at a lot of buildings and architects. Latterly the Japanese architect Tado Ando and Australian Glen Murcott. HDA: What advice would you give to anybody trying to break through in the industry wanting to have their own show? CL: I came to TV presenting by accident, by doing something I loved and being in the right place at the right time!

emissions by making straightforward changes to your lifestyle: the kind of food you buy, how you travel, how you heat your home, mindset... If you really want to do it you'll research it and what you need to do will become clear. HDA: How has your life changes since becoming a TV personality? CL: It hasn't! I carry on with my architectural design business because I love erecting buildings and that's what I do. 3 days out of 5 I'm in the office where my feet are on the ground. Besides, my wife wouldn't let me become a TV 'personality'! HDA: What year did you first attend The Homebuilding & Renovating and Home Improvement Shows? CL: 2010/11.

For more expert advice from Charlie Luxton, come along to The London Homebuilding & Renovating and Home Improvement Show proudly sponsored by Anglian Home Improvements from 26-28 September at Olympia, London

HDA: What is your dream project? CL: At the moment I'm focusing on a small self-build housing estate. We're working with the people who are buying the houses to give them individual homes but in a group way. It's very exciting and this method of home building should be the way forward. HDA: Have you tackled or do you plan to take on, any big projects in your native country Australia? CL: I would love to! HDA: Have you any tips/pointer for our readers to become more green in everyday living? CL: You can make a 15-20% reduction in your carbon

Minus 7 The Minus 7 system is a truly innovative, renewable energy product. It’s extremely effective and very efficient, it helps to reduce fuel costs and makes homes look fantastic, says Mark Wozencroft, Managing Director, of Minus 7. “It’s our mission to make renewable energy a sensible investment that will be beneficial to customers, provide affordable warmth, cut carbon emissions and reduce negative impact on the environment.” The Minus 7 hybrid energy harvesting system is made up of an endothermic roofing system, a solar energy processor and a large thermal store. The system uses endothermic tile planks to form a weather-tight interlocking roofing system, made from a uniform profile, aluminium extrusion, dressed in a powder-coated, hardwearing finish. The endothermic tile planks are flooded with a heat transfer fluid which absorbs heat energy and solar thermal energy. It is classified as a solarassisted heat pump technology, within the National Calculation Method (Standard Assessment Procedure). The identifier for this product is Minus 7 SEP3G10 1/2/3. For an average 50m2 apartment operating at a constant temperature of 23.5°C during the

winter months, heating and hot water bills would cost as little as £6 a week throughout the year. The system can provide heat and hot water for up to four dwellings from one system which reduces the proportionate capital outlay making it highly suitable for housing developments. Top Energy Saving Attributes

Harvests energy 24 hours of the day Insensitive to orientation System sized to give maximum efficiency, even in worst case scenario of midnight in mid winter Thermal store gives consistent supply of heat and hot water – reducing peaks and troughs

Thermal store has 200mm of insulation, minimising heat loss to just 2.5kWh per 24 hours Pumps that run the system are ultra efficient – just 70W The operation of the heat pump is decoupled from the heat demand of the building It does not suffer from the UK’s winter humidity issues – no need to defrost No unsightly bolt-on panels ‘Smart grid’ ready

The system has recently been used by property developer, David Lomax, in Norfolk, where his renovated Victorian school building was converted into eight, 2 bedroom, apartments. “I like the idea of an inexpensive form

of heating. The benefit of this for a house builder, or landlord is that I can charge a higher rate of rent for my properties, but include heating and hot water within the costs to the tenants. My running costs are greatly reduced but the tenants benefit from set rates and increased levels of comfort. The average weekly cost of £6.00 per week, per apartment, is excellent,” says Lomax. “The outlay for the Minus 7 systems including install was £80,000. It’s a large investment but the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme really swayed me to go down that route. Over 20 years the RHI will pay out £100,000 and I’m very happy that this means that the system will pay for itself, which made the decision to use it more simple,” says Lomax.

It is designed to keep a five bed house at a comfortable temperature of at least 21oC even in the worst case scenario of mid-winter. Manufactured in the UK, to the highest commercial quality standards, the roofing component is expected to last for more than 50 years and the solar energy processor will last for more than 20 years. t Harvests energy 24 hours of the day t Insensitive to orientation t Heat pump decoupled from heat demand of the building t No issue with UK winter humidity - no need to defrost t No unsightly bolt-on panels

Design Decking to Last The Timber Decking and Cladding Association (TDCA) is offering a material sourcing service where it will contact potential suppliers on your behalf to generate a list of those willing and able to meet your specific needs. This and designing for durability are common themes in the daily stream of enquiries received by the TDCA. In response, the organisation is urging specifiers and users of timber to tighten up on specifications by detailing the durability required in line with relevant standards for all aspects of the deck, particularly the substructure.

TIMBER DECKING AND CLADDING ASSOCIATION

Broadly speaking you have a choice to design to 15, 30 or 60 year desired service life for external timber decking. This is achieved through good design detail coupled with selecting materials of the right quality. With pressure treated timber, the TDCA stresses the importance of obtaining evidence of treatment which includes confirmation of the standard of treatment and the conferred desired service life. Timber that meets a 15 year desired service life specification is the easiest to source; longer service life material tends to be available to order. species that are classed as naturally durable such as Cumaru or Massaranduba which are tropical hardwoods. A common misunderstanding relates to natural durability; durability classes apply to heartwood only; heartwood comes from the central core of the tree whilst the sapwood is from the periphery or the outer section of the tree. The sapwood of all species is non durable and should either be enhanced by a suitable means or excluded (suitable means includes pressure impregnation with preservative or wood modification). Sourcing accredited materials will help in the pursuit of acquiring durable products; DeckMarkTM and CladMarkTM are the quality accreditation schemes operated by TDCA for its members.

TDCA online resources covering this and other subjects are designed to help specifiers, designers and installers alike to design for durability. There you will find technical help and publications free to download and if you can’t find what you need, you can use the association’s enquiry service.

ALUMINIUM WINDOW RANGE A new range of aluminium windows has been launched by Origin, the leading UK manufacturer of bespoke aluminium bi-folding doors, offering premium quality aluminium flush casement windows. The Origin Window has been designed and engineered at the company’s High Wycombe factory following demand from trade partners seeking a window to match the aesthetic and quality of Origin’s folding sliding door system. The Origin Window is a perfect match for any modern build, but also an ideal replacement for windows in a period property. The aluminium window frames offer the right combination of strength and weight, allowing for narrow sightlines, whilst providing superior thermal performance and improved acoustic dampening. The Origin Window offers supreme security through its ‘Secured by Design’ Yale locking system with night vent opening. Neil Ginger, CEO of Origin, says: “The Origin Window is suitable for all window types, whether it be fixed, side or top hung, dummy sash and gable configurations, giving builders and architects the choice they so often seek when designing a home. We have taken great care to create a window that is not only finely engineered, but that also looks attractive. Home Designer & Architect Thank Clients For All Their Donations For Luke Williams ‘Honeymoon’ When Luke Williams, a 29 year old School Teacher, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer earlier this year, he has set his sights on raising as much money for his chosen charities as possible. With a huge fundraising campaign, ranging from Football Events, Dog Walking and a Gig to Golf Days & Auctions. Having already raised over £14,000 for Cancer Research UK, there are still a lot of events planned. Please visit www.williams-weekender.co.uk to find out all of the upcoming events and how you can get involved. Included on Luke’s bucket list was ‘to marry his fiancée Linda’. Having seen the stories in the local press, JET Digital Media Ltd’s Managing Director, Tony Little, set about to contact clients who could help to arrange a honeymoon for Luke & Linda. On finalising the details for the trip, Tony said “Seeing the way that Luke has dedicated his time to raising money for the charities that have helped him was really inspiring, and I thought we should try to do something for him to pay him back for his hard work and kindness .” After speaking to just a few clients, they were more than willing to help out and JET managed to organise:t t t t

STRUCTURAL FREEDOM AT ITS BEST Living up to their reputation for innovation, Ecophon has launched Master Matrix, a truly unique floating ceiling system that combines excellent acoustics with the ability to create appealing design effects across large open plan areas. A unique Connect grid system aids installation to attain the highest levels of accuracy, meaning clean, uninterrupted lines are easily achieved, for the perfect finish. Inspired by patterns and rhythm, Master Matrix offers extensive design scope thanks to the range of panel shapes and sizes available. They can be used to generate the effect of linear motion or variations of large, repetitive elements; and can interact with pipes, tubes and light installations to easily accommodate bespoke design requirements. The system is particularly suitable for TABS (Thermically Activated Building Systems) where wallto-wall ceilings are not possible because the high coverage ratio would constrain a satisfactory cooling effect from the concrete. For TABS buildings, since Master Matrix achieves good acoustics with a proven minimal effect on the thermal conditions, it is not necessary to choose between energy efficiency and acoustic comfort, since both can be achieved. Consisting of Ecophon Master Matrix panels and the Ecophon Connect grid system with an approximate combined weight of just 5 – 6 kg/m2, the system is quick and easy to install with very high levels of accuracy thanks to its pre-installed fixing devices and ‘click-in’ connection to the grid system. There is no need for post-adjustment and panels can easily be demounted where necessary, with a built in hatch function providing easy access to the soffit. Offering ultimate flexibility, the system can either be installed with high coverage of the ceiling area, or installed in rows with 40mm gaps between the panels giving a floating appearance. In terms of manufacture, the panel element is made from high-density glass wool, which utilises Ecophon’s patented 3RD Technology for environmental benefits. The wool also meets fire safety demands and has been tested and classified as non-combustible according to EN ISO 1182. The visible surface of the panel has an Akutex FT coating and the back of the tile has a glass tissue facing. The Connect grid and suspension system elements are manufactured from galvanised steel and aluminium. The tiles are able to withstand a permanent ambient RH up to 95% at 30°C without any sagging, warping or delaminating. From an environmental perspective, the system has also been granted the Nordic Swan eco-label and is fully recyclable as well as featuring the highest recycled content on the market. Furthermore since only complete panels are used, no waste is created on site. Will Jones of Ecophon commented, “This revolutionary ceiling system really opens up design possibilities that just weren’t possible before, with the added assurance that the final installation will truly realise the design vision. This, together with the technical performance for which Ecophon is renowned, delivers an all encompassing floating ceiling solution for best in class acoustic and aesthetics.” For more information on Ecophon’s Master Matrix visit www.ecophon.co.uk or follow Ecophon on Twitter @EcophonUK.

The client in particular requested The Solid Wood Flooring boards which are not only comply with the very modern interior of Storm Castle on the Gower. A spectacular “modern castle” on Swansea’s Gower peninsula has earned its designers the prestigious Gold Medal for Architecture at this year’s National Eisteddfod of Wales. The contemporary private home, Stormy Castle, designed by Cardiff-based architects Loyne & Co beat fierce competition from 14 other entries across the country to scoop the coveted award, which is supported by the Design Commission for Wales (DCFW), at the National Eisteddfod in Llanelli today. Stormy Castle is a three-bedroom home on the north Gower coast which has been designed for energy efficiency using materials that reduce maintenance. It is designed with three stepped “wings” set into the surrounding landscape following the contours of the land. Its roofs are green-planted to help with insulation, also enabling them to double up as terraces. Stormy Castle by Loyn & Co Architects - a modern castle in a stunning Gower peninsula-setting The award’s selectors praised Stormy Castle’s “outstanding” organisational plan and attention to detail, calling it a “a spectacular architectural response to both the owner’s brief and the site”.

Chris Loyn, principal architect at Loyn & Co, said: “I was thrilled to learn Stormy Castle had won this year’s Gold Medal for Architecture. While it had already been nominated for a number of industry awards, this one was particularly special, as it shows we are achieving our aim of raising the quality of architecture in Wales, and flying the flag for Welsh architectural talent. “While the beautiful Gower landscape was our biggest inspiration, it was also our biggest challenge, and our greatest concern throughout the design process was creating a home that would respect and work in harmony with its surroundings.” Selector Ann-Marie Smale, of Powell Dobson Architects, explained further: “Stormy Castle is exceptional in its clarity of concept; it is beautifully executed, and responds to its brief and site in every instance. “The location presented a number of challenges that have been addressed with sensitivity. The stepped layout, arranged over three levels, allows the building to embed itself into the hillside, and materials have been chosen to reflect the surroundings.” In addition to the Gold Medal, the Plaque of Merit will be presented today to Crickhowell and Dinas Powys-based Hoole & Walmsley Architects for the firm’s much admired Old Farm Mews development in Dinas Powys.

FPS Raises Awareness of Rig Instability through Over-Flighting The Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) has issued a Guidance Document that is designed to highlight situations where piling rigs can become unstable through over-flighting during Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piling. The document, which is available for download from the FPS website www.fps.org.uk, is aimed at piling contractors; geotechnical designers; planning supervisors and others involved with the specification, selection and procurement of CFA piling. It provides background information to the flighting mechanism, helping identify some of the situations where the risk of over-flighting is likely to occur. In addition, the Guidance Document details some of the options that are available to piling specialists and presents best practice that can help reduce the risk of rig instability and further enhance safety of operations on-site. Speaking about the Guidance Document, Martin Blower, Chairman FPS said: “CFA piling is widely used and there have been a number of notable rig overturns recently. What this document does is raise wider awareness of the potential risks of over-flighting, loss of support and stability of the working platform that may result in a piling rig or attendant crane overturning. More importantly, the document encourages robust risk management and the controls to be implemented to mitigate such risk.” The document is not intended to replace the requirements to use competent supervision and operatives when undertaking CFA piling, but as an additional information source offering guidance.

Casella’s real-time dust and noise measurement system BOUNDARY Guardian set to protect London’s environment A series of major demolition, construction and rejuvenation projects across London will be adopting an innovative noise and dust monitoring technology this summer by using Casella’s pioneering BOUNDARY Guardian. This web-based, remote system offers a powerful tool to aid the UK construction industry by ensuring compliance with regulatory limits, including Section 61 restrictions and PPG24. For an example of best practice, businesses can refer to Qatar, where a number of these systems have been provided for the construction of a new underground metro system in the capital city of Doha. Here, they have proved vital in helping contractors meet mandatory limits for noise and dust emissions from construction works. The Doha Green Line Underground construction is part of Qatar’s national Integrated Rail Project, which comprises the construction of a rail line from the main station at Msheireb to the centre of Doha, Education City and the Al Rayyan Stadium, which is being built in preparation for a major international football tournament in 2022. Like many major cities globally, Doha has a number of local guidelines for noise and dust emissions from construction works, especially with regards to more sensitive areas around the site. With additional local challenges, such as sand blowing in from the desert during the summer months and changes in air quality from high volumes of city traffic, contractors needed a reliable, effective and fast system to alert them to any breaches of local noise and dust regulations. The BOUNDARY Guardian was selected as the ideal, system-engineered solution to monitor and alert site managers to excessive noise and dust levels. The system will send email and text alerts should dust and/or noise levels be breached so that immediate action can be taken, and can be used to provide all necessary reports showing compliance with local guidelines. The BOUNDARY Guardian is also simple to install and easy to move around the site, requiring only a power source to plug into, after which users simply login online to monitor site conditions.
