L-shaped prefab house in Portugal by MIMA architects -shaped prefabricated house assembled in portugal by MIMA architects this compact prefabricated dwelling is known as the MIMA house and located in alentejo in northern portugal. created by MIMA architects, the sharp and modern design promotes quick and simple assembling, whilst being affordable and of a high construction quality. the floor plan of this particular house is L-shaped and a base of 1.5 m x 1.5 m for space

definition, however, the unique factor of this build is its option to be customizable and reconfigurable to the client’s desired size, spatial organization and materials. the duration for the assembling of this MIMA house took 2 months, with it simplistic interiors, it is composed of light-weight panels for the walls, clean lines, white tiles and an outdoor pool. overall, the space sits in harmony amongst the flat and nature surrounded landscape.

CITB welcome digital apprenticeship voucher scheme Employers will be able to purchase training directly from providers using the voucher, which represents the public funding available to them.

They will then pay only the balance of training costs which are not fully funded.

The system will be paperless and administered by the Skills Funding Agency.

The apprenticeship voucher was launched due to concerns that, under the original proposals, SMEs would be forced to pay training costs upfront, handle public money, and deal with extra bureaucracy.

Commenting on the new system, CITB’s Director of Policy, Steve Radley, said: “This revised funding model is employer-led and

more workable for SMEs. “This is vital for an industry that is made up of 95% SMEs and facing a significant skills challenge for the coming years.

“The new model must also take into account sector-specific needs. For example, in construction we believe that employers should have the choice to opt for a thirdparty provider to manage their training, especially where this already works well.”

Other key initiatives in the Budget for the construction industry include: • An increase of 57p to the minimum hourly apprentice rate. • Land being made available on brown field sites for 45,000 new homes.

• Devolution of skills and planning powers to the Mayor of London and new City Deals for other parts of the UK • The announcement of 8 new enterprise zones, including Plymouth and Mersey Waters. • £7bn of roads and rail funding for the South West Steve Radley added: “Getting the building pipeline right, supported with well-designed funding models, will set the sector up for success in years to come.

“The next Government must not waver on delivering the planned projects to time and budget, which will give construction employers the confidence to invest in skills and jobs for the longer term.”

Purple Energy present to the European Biomass Association in Brussels Staffordshire-based Purple Energy were invited to Brussels on Monday 16th March to present to the European Biomass Association (AEBIOM).

Director of the renewable energy company, Mark Stafford, presented to approximately 100 attendees from across the European biomass sector at the event entitled ‘Biomass – an economic asset for business and people’.

The event focussed on the positive role of biomass in tackling energy poverty and strengthening EU economic competitiveness.

Mr Stafford said: “The European Biomass Association plays a huge part in representing the biomass sector so it was a privilege for Purple Energy to be invited to present to the Association in Brussels.”

of energy, while benefiting from the recognition of being embedded in the green economy.

During the event, Mr Stafford discussed the growing use of biomass for heating with the UK and highlighted the significance of the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme in helping to kick-start the UK biomass market.

Mr Stafford said: “Since our inception in 2006 we have seen considerable growth to the industry which has had a significant impact on Purple Energy as we now install biomass systems nationally on both a small and large scale, including for national organisations and government buildings.

“UK businesses are increasingly having to compete based on their environmental credentials and business owners are now recognising both the environmental and financial savings that biomass can offer and ultimately the improved business competitiveness that it can enable.”

Brussels-based AEBIOM is the common voice of the European bioenergy sector and works to develop the market for sustainable bioenergy and ensure favourable business conditions for its members.

Speaking after the event, Anamaria Olaru, of AEBIOM, said: “It is now clearer than ever that biomass is an economic asset for people and business that provides an affordable energy solution. Biomass is the answer to tackling energy poverty and improving economic competitiveness.”

The event was organised under the framework of the Biomass Counts Campaign, an initiative launched

by AEBIOM to showcase the numerous benefits of biomass and highlight its key role in achieving the EU’s objectives of economic growth, decarbonisation and energy dependency.

Designer Luciano Pia brings the forest into the city with his unique 25 Verde residence in Turin Amongst the city streets of Turin sits an oasis of green forest disguising a five-storey apartment building. Luciano Pia designed the building as an attempt to protect residents from noise and air pollution.

The fairy-tale building creates a transition from outdoors to in, with 150 trees that absorb close to 200,000 litres of carbon dioxide an hour, filtering out exhaust fumes and street noise. This means residents have clean, fresh air and a relaxing tranquil environment.

With the change of the seasons, the trees create a microclimate inside the building, regulating temperature by blocking out the heat of the sun in the summer and letting in warm light in the winter.

There are 63 units, each with a terrace. The exterior gardens have been designed with carefully chosen plants to offer a seasonal variety of colour, foliage and flowers.

For anyone who wants to fulfil their childhood dream of living in a treehouse, this playful, yet practical building is the answer.

Chris Dyson Architects adapts a former Gloucestershire gasworks Chris Dyson Architects have completed the refurbishment of a derelict gasworks into a 120sq m sustainable annex for contemporary living. The project is the extension to a 19th century stone building in the Gloucestershire countryside, in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Located by a quiet, minor road, the gasworks was built in 1877 and formerly provided gas for lighting to a nearby country house. The building had been recently acquired by a client with a passion for restoring derelict buildings, and who wanted a house which met both their current and future needs. From its inception the brief for the new building focused on the need to reduce the overall environmental impact during the construction process, as well as meeting the future demands for heating and electricity.

While preserving and giving new life to the existing cottage, Chris Dyson Architects knew the cottage would require additional space to suit future needs of living, so the studio adopted a Cotswold Typology of the “Barn” to form a new contemporary single storey extension without over developing the cottage.

The new rusty steel barn is clad in CorTen steel, one of the most recycled building materials available. The steel envelope sits on

a sustainably sourced timber frame and pays homage to the building’s industrial past, while creating a striking contrast to the main building. The new annex is deliberately distinct from its surroundings but with creative use of materials and massing works gently with the landscape encircling an external courtyard.

The annex is single storey, with a circular tower element which recalls the former gas storage cylinder on the site. The tower now houses study spaces. Insulation to both walls and the roof is taken to a higher level than is required under the building regulations and is made up of Warmcell Insulation. This product is manufactured from recycled waste paper which is converted to a green, eco-friendly high performance insulation.

The annex is accessed by a link from the kitchen of the cottage and becomes a corridor connecting the ensuite bedrooms. Each bedroom is arranged to create a horseshoe, forming a courtyard around the back of the building.

Inside the annex, a glazed portico links four bedrooms with private services. Each room enjoys spectacular views onto the natural woodland. Large windows on the roofs allow high levels of daylight in the interior.

The building is heated via an external air source heat pump. Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air which can then be used to heat the underfloor heating system. Although not a truly renewable source of heating, the system does significantly reduce the electrical demand to the building. This results in a lower home carbon emission which, with the photovoltaic panels fitted to the roof, means that the electrical demand is significantly lower than a conventional home.

Chris Dyson Architects embraced the client’s culture of sustainability by applying the most efficient techniques offered by building performance science. Passive ventilation, a biomass boiler room, rain water harvesting systems and solar power panels dramatically reduce the environmental impact of the development.

Songpa Micro Housing The problem of urban density and housing costs is global. As unit types get smaller however, land costs coupled with developer driven profit margins can merely create a provisional housing type with little social value.

By mining the discrepancy between maximum floor area ratios and maximum zoning envelopes, Songpa Micro-Housing provides a new typology that extends the limits of the housing unit to also include semi-public circulation, balconies, and the thickness of walls. Like the ambiguous gel around a tapioca pearl, this ‘Tapioca Space’ becomes a soft intersection between public/ private and interior/exterior, creating social fabrics between neighbors.

Fourteen ‘unit blocks’ allow residents to either claim a single space, or in the case where a couple or friends desire to do so, recombine the blocks for larger configurations. This flexibility accommodates changing live and work situations allowing residents to occupy the building longer and therefore more sustainably. Further generating the idea of community, exhibition spaces on the ground floor, basement, and second floors are spatially linked to the units as a shared living room.

Although the zoning regulations requires the building to be lifted for parking, this open ground plan is also used to pull pedestrians in from the street and down a set of auditorium-like steps, connecting city and building residents to the exhibition and cafe spaces below.

Willmott Dixon increases Liverpool workload Willlmott Dixon is expanding its presence in Liverpool with a £8 million contract to transform a prominent tower block

flats completely refurbished and 24 new apartments built to provide a mixture of one and two-bed properties.

The company has been appointed

by Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) to overhaul the 15 storey Marwood Tower and transform it into 81 modern apartments for over 55s. The local landmark is situated between Great Homer Street and Kirkdale Road and its revamp is part of the wider Project Jennifer development along Great Homer Street.

A new arc around the base of the tower will be built that includes a courtyard garden and a community consultation exercise is taking place to decide the designs and features. The old and new buildings will be linked by covered walkways that open in the centre of the courtyard.

This latest project builds on Willmott Dixon’s extensive recent work to update schools in the city, with the company recently completing Notre Dame and Archbishop Beck secondary schools. It will complete a third secondary school, Archbishop Blanch, this summer.

Assistant Director of Development at LMH, Chris Bowen, said: “The Marwood Tower scheme is going ahead at great pace after planning permission was granted.

Cllr Ann O’Byrne, Cabinet Member for Housing at Liverpool City Council, said: “This is an exciting scheme which will completely transform the tower block and create much-needed good quality accommodation. This is another example of where we are working with partners and being creative in finding new ways of re-using existing buildings and sites to meet our commitment to build 5,000 new homes and bring another 1,000 back into use.”

It is Willmott Dixon’s first housing project in Liverpool.

CHROFI’s Tranquil Suburban Narrabeen house In an ordinary suburb on an ordinary tree-lined street in the Australian suburban town of Narrabeen sits a very extraordinary house. Looking quite modest from the street, the two-storey house belies what lies behind it: a private lagoon-side oasis, looking out across the water to an untouched island.

The planning deliberately isolates the occupant from the suburban surrounds to heighten the sense of a private retreat.

On entering, visitors are led through a succession of exterior spaces that gradually take them further away from the street context through a composition of fences, full height screens and thresholds, ending at a solid doorway where the sense of intrigue peaks. Rather than entering a hallway, visitors arrive in a central courtyard where the full extent of the private domain, the

lagoon and island, are revealed and any sense of the outside world is removed.

The house also has an unusual sectional arrangement due in part to having to elevate the interior 1.2 m above ground level to safeguard against flooding, but also by the desire to have dual-aspect open-plan spaces.

At the heart of the building, the central courtyard is surrounded by the living room, dining room, kitchen, study and pool, visually connecting the spaces. This creates a tranquil and socially inclusive dynamic but also draws light and air into the house.

Polished concrete harmonises with a variety of timbers in a sleek and minimal interior design. The use of a simple, calming palette of warm natural materials contributes to the feeling of a tranquil oasis

Winner announced for the 2014 Wood in Architecture Award Arup Associates beat a line-up of five other amazing contenders to claim the 2014 Wood in Architecture Award with its Sky Believe in Better Building, which is the UK’s tallest timber structure.

After much discussion and comparing the merits of each shortlisted project, the team of judges including, Meredith Bowles – Founder of Mole Architects, Russell Brown – Founding Partner of HawkinsBrown, Benjamin Garcia Saxe – Founder of Benjamin Garcia Saxe, Harley Grusko – Associate as well as Project Architect for Perkins+Will Vancouver, and Mette Melandsø – Founding Partner at PIR 2, and winner of last year’s Wood in Architecture Award, finally made their decision to award the prize to Arup Associates for their Sky Believe in Better Building in London.

The judges felt that this project best fulfilled their criteria, which were its extensive use of wood in the structure, and the sustainable message it gave out. For them it was a clear winner due to the fact that it was the biggest and most challenging entry. Judge Harley Grusko stated: “I know the complexity that goes into a building like this.”

One of the facts that also amazed the judges was the short turnaround for finishing the building. The project was taken from inception to site in just three months and the project was completed in one year from inception.

But what really swayed the judges was the sheer size of the building.

Harley Grusko said: It is the biggest, most challenging project that we have seen here today. It was the only one that uses wood to such a high degree and with such precision. Large scale matters.”

Russell Brown added: “It is pretty amazing for a commercial building of that size [in the UK] to have a timber structure.”

The judges expressed that they wished to see more buildings like this on the same scale and that it would be a real breakthrough in the industry to move to big, sustainable wood structures like the Sky Believe in Better Building.

Congratulations to Arup Associates, and many thanks to all the other fantastic participants who took place in the competition, and to our panel of judges.

A clue as to why a Marazzi kitchen is so special is seen in the Colosseo Oro, a limited edition series of 10 individually engineered kitchens presented in September 2011 at the 100% Design Show at Earl’s court, london. Based on the Best of the Best Award winning Colosseo design, the Oro is a refined, no-expense-spared version, which includes newly developed composite materials that form smooth radius central ‘island’ units. Metallic chameleon lacquer emphasises the dramatic curves, giving depth and definition to the surface. finishes include 24-carat gold leaf.

The Colosseo’s ‘no compromise’ futuristic design extends to four metres in diameter, removing the confining planes of wall-facing kitchens. It is a detached, fully integrated island with appliances positioned around the cook, ensuring that everything is close at hand. the circular design complements the natural twisting ergonomic movements of the body while preparing food. the outer circle of the island is a special area that invites friends and family to sit and chat while the chef whips up the meal, or just allows one to immerse in the enjoyment of one of the most impressive kitchens in the world.

Other finishes include crocodile embossed leather, metallic gloss chameleon lacquer, Swarovski crystal lights and Venetian inked gold glass. Appliances are by renowned manufacturers from around the world — Zaha taps, a collaboration between architect Zaha hadid and triflow concepts; Sub-Zero refrigeration and wine storage systems; ovens, hobs and warming drawers from Wolf ovens; Max fire custom-made steel extraction systems with boiled and chilled water delivered via gold plated Zip hydro taps. fisher and paykel make the drawer dishwashers, and worktops are sculpted by hi-MAcS@Solid Surface.

Kitchen design is a piece of cake with Axiom®

Axiom® by Formica Group worktops and splashbacks have been installed at the recently opened Cakeydora’s Baking Academy in Lichfield, Staffordshire. Used throughout the teaching area, the Axiom® worktop range helped to create a stylish and contemporary look.

Julie Crisp, Cakeydora’s owner, says: “We wanted to achieve a professional and slightly industrial look for the main teaching area. The White Scovato worktops combined with splashbacks

in Brushed Aluminium created clean and sharp lines.

At the same time, the use of white made the kitchen area look bigger and airier; providing a clean canvas for other elements such as the main bar, for which we used splashbacks in bright and glossy Amarena.”

Scovato, a lightly chiselled finish used on Cakeydora’s worktops, enhances a simple plain colour surface. Surface textures are a stylish way to create depth and dimension;

current trends favour lowgloss textures for a subtle but dramatic statement.

After many years of allwhite and neutral schemes, colour has returned to interior design. To clad the area underneath the main breakfast bar, Julie chose Amarena Gloss splashbacks, adding a burst of colour to the teaching space. While splashbacks are usually used above a worktop, their creative use as footer panel

Georgian Manor House We were asked to redevelop this Manor house (originally Georgian with significant Victorian extensions) which has been the clients’ family home for 16 years.

T

he owners’ children had left home and subsequently the property had a large number of downstairs rooms (such as the formal Dining Room) which were effectively shut off for a large part of the year.

Upstairs they had a plethora of bedrooms that were no longer used at all.

We were engaged to redevelop the property to create a new range of living areas throughout the home, altering the layout and usage to ensure that all areas were used on a daily basis.

We were also asked to work with the clients’ architect to develop the interiors of a new garden room extension which allowed far greater views of the extensive grounds.

Room layouts and uses on the ground floor were redesigned (along with some structural alterations) to provide a suite that allowed the owners to follow the course of the best natural sunlight through the interior of the house during the day.

The dining room was relocated from an isolated corner to a position directly adjacent to the kitchen and on a daily route to a new living room. This transformed its use from high days and holidays to everyday.

Upstairs the master suite was completely revamped and a bespoke dressing room was created from a former bedroom. A further bedroom on the first floor was decommissioned to create an en-suite for a guest room.

On the attic floor, previously unused spaces were reclaimed to create a bespoke guest suite with dedicated bathroom.

The overall look is classic and relaxing, but hardwearing as it was important that it could withstand the rigours of visits by young grandchildren who are an important part of this couple’s regular routine.

ontractor Midroc chose VIVIX® exterior façade panels to clad the outside of the residential building Bohus, in Malmö, Sweden.

Altogether nearly 3000 square meters of the lightweight and impact-resistant facade material was fitted (youtu.be/9t5OBPhsOP0).

It is in central Malmö that the municipal housing company MKB together with Midroc Project Management have just completed a tower block consisting of 54 apartments. It’s a house with 15 floors, built in the yard of an existing property, in line with the municipality’s ambitions to densify the city to meet the growth of the population there.

In total almost 3000 square meters of VIVIX facade panels have been used. Because it is a 15-storey high building it was important with a lightweight material was used in order for the installation to be simple and secure.

“We used VIVIX panels in 6mm thickness at Bohus. The panels have low weight per square meter, making it easy to handle” says Mikael Carlsson.

Fermacell racks up a BBA bonus Building board manufacturer Fermacell has achieved BBA approval for external applications.

Long approved by the BBA for internal partitioning and dry-lining, Fermacell gypsum fibreboard has now received certification as an external rainscreen backer board.

The award of Certificate 90/2439 reinforces Fermacell’s position as “The ultimate building board”, with a product life equal to that of the building in which it is installed, and with its high recycled content, helps specifiers and contractors to achieve BREEAM points using just a single, highly versatile system.

The BBA assessment covered Fermacell’s structural performance, finding that it contributes to the racking resistance of timber frame walls when used as a sheathing board. It also satisfied the Class 0 (low risk) fire performance surface requirements for external and internal linings.

In addition, the latest certification acknowledged that Fermacell boards can be used acoustically to improve the sound insulation of new and existing walls and ceilings, and that it does not promote infestation and successfully resists attack by timber-destroying fungi.

Fermacell’s technical manager Andrew Richardson said: “This additional accreditation will give specifiers and contractors formal reassurance that our gypsum fibreboard is really all they need for both internal and external lining purposes.”

At WorkClub, a media creative agency, we worked with architect John Nordon of IDE-Architects to design and produce a suspended system which combined cable distribution and lighting. The trunking system was suspended above the open work area and carried all power and comms cables. Light fittings could be positioned at any point in the top of the section giving a general uplight over the whole area with tracks and spots fitted into the sides to give flexible accent lighting to areas below and on the walls. Special outlet columns dropped power and IT cables down to the desktop in areas where workstations were clustered and for presentation spaces.

Making Light Work in the Home The Project

A magnificent family home in Surrey, this 5 bedroom property boasts exceptional features such as, split levels, glass walls, high ceilings and pocket doors. The layout of the building offers spacious ground floor accommodation (kitchen/breakfast/family) plus five further reception rooms. It has a grand curved staircase that leads to the upper level and a self-contained annex.

The Brief

The property required a lighting control solution that could effectively control a multi-room LED based installation. Flexibility was key with the ability to tailor the lighting requirements for individual rooms essential, and the look of the system needed to complement the quality design and fabulous finish of the project.

The Solution

Hamilton worked alongside the developer to design a bespoke system based upon its Mercury® Lighting Control system. This intuitive system enables the user to create an incredible variety of lighting scenarios; from simple dimming to scene-setting programmes, which can be set, stored and recalled with ease.

The installation included a master control hub and wall-mounted control plates which are available as ‘Capacitive touch controllers’ and ‘Mechanical button controllers. In this case mechanical button controllers in a Sheer CFX® plate design, finished in polished chrome were selected across the property to reinforce the minimalist and contemporary design theme. With Mercury installed, on leaving or arriving at the property the homeowner can simply operate all pre-sets at the touch of one button. A remote control facility via iPad/iPhone using a downloadable app was also integrated into the system.

The Result

The homeowner has a system which can be controlled by the push of a button, or remotely by the swipe of a finger, giving them full control of the lighting throughout the property even when it’s unoccupied.

Plus Hamilton’s bespoke design and production service, Savile Row, ensured that every control plate was unique in both function and form – tailor-made coming as standard!

CHESHIRE OAKS DEAL SEWN UP A new service has come to the rescue of designer shoppers needing a quick tuck in their tux or a hem on their Hilfigers.

For a well-known national clothing repair and alteration business has teamed up with a specialist manufacturer to install new kiosks in McArthur Glen designer outlets, which will allow customers to have their garments altered within hours.

Midlands-based Rapid Retail has designed, supplied and installed its first bespoke retail unit for Quickstitch at McArthur Glen’s Cheshire Oaks outlet near Ellesmere Port, with Quickstitch aiming to roll out the in-outlet service nationally.

The businesses started to work together late in 2014 when Quickstitch owner Phil Harker approached Rapid Retail to develop a unit that would blend in with the McArthur Glen outlet layout, while offering a friendly and welcoming area for customers. Now, customers can expect a same-day service for alterations, all carried out by Quickstitch tailors and seamstresses in the specially-designed units. Rapid Retail worked on a design that not only reflected the Quickstitch branding, but also is a comfortable and airy place for staff to work and customers to visit.

Phil Harker said: “Because of the nature of designer outlets, not all sizes of the designer brands are available so we will alter clothes to fit, within just a few hours.

Rapid Retail quickly grasped what we and McArthur Glen needed to achieve in terms of presence and service”.

This is not only a traditional retail unit, but also a workplace with a customer-facing area. Rapid Retail already works closely with customers in the retail sector in food, beverage and sports clothing but this is its first contract with a clothing alteration company.

McArthur Glen, voted the number one outlet operator in 2014, currently has 20 destination designer outlets across the UK and Europe. It has just reported a record number of designer brands being added to its portfolio, many of which are sold at prices offering customers savings of 30 - 70% of the recommended retail price.

Vale Park Bandstand Hyperkote Waterproofing and Protection

The doric-columed bandstand with a domed roof was created in 1926 and it provided a majestic backdrop to the concerts which took place there on a regular basis. During the 1970’s and 80’s most features requiring maintenance were eliminated from the park but the bandstand remained and is still used to this day.

In 1999 restorative work to the Bandstand was undertaken to provide waterproof treatment to the dome roof and rainwater channels, refurbishment of performers changing facility, re-laying of staging, exterior painting and re-cladding to the rear elevation to improve security of the structure.

Vale Park is situated in the New Brighton area of Wallasey in the Wirral, North West England.

The park was created in 1899 to give the population of the area green space to enjoy amidst the grime of the industrial revolution.

Unfortunately the waterproofing work did not stand the test of time and it became necessary for this work to be repeated.

A project to repair the bandstand was carried out in August 2014 by North West Construction approved applicator of the British Board of Agrement (BBA) certified VERDISEAL™, HYPERKOTE™ and TRAFFIDECK™ Waterproofing Systems from Dow. “We took the decision to use the HYPERKOTE™ waterproofing system from Dow on the Vale Park bandstand because it was a concrete dome on a skeletal steel frame and movement was an issue. The dome had been repaired some years ago but the system wasn’t a patch on the Dow system and leaked a short time afterwards.

When I had a site meeting with Wirral Borough Council (WBC) I set out all the advantages and the longevity of the Dow product and reminded them of work carried out on Wallasey town hall which had the same system applied 6 years ago and had never leaked since.

Preparation and Repairs Removal of old bitumen coatings and sheet membranes.

E4 100% solids epoxy primer from Dow was applied and dressed to refusal with quartz sand to give excellent intercoat adhesion.

Repairs to the structure and channel detailing were carried out using the E4 primer and graded quartz. By using this method overcoating was able to take place within 4 hours of the repair mortar being placed and cured.

HYPERKOTE™ waterproofing membrane was applied using specialist spray equipment to fully encapsulate and seal the Dome from the elements.

North West Construction Ltd have a fully self contained 7.5 ton wagon so are able to drive the spray equipment, heated hose, materials and power to within 400 feet of the structure they are coating.

Then you have to consider the HSE implications of this job, working at height together with the difficulty off scaffolding a dome and still being able to apply any sort of covering. With the HYPERKOTE™ spray applied system it allowed us to work off a Hydraulic MEWP.

Now the Vale Park bandstand, which has overlooked the River Mersey and the Port of Liverpool for nearly 90 years has the protection of the BBA certified HYPERKOTE™ waterproofing system to help it withstand the sea swept elements for many years to come.

efore deciding on the tile – is there a reason for the feature wall? For instance, is there a fireplace that you want to highlight? Do you want it to split the focus in the room or bring the elements of it together? It’s good to understand what effect you are trying to achieve before looking for the tile. Do you want a light, airy space or a bold statement in the room, to invoke awe from onlookers?

The tile you choose will have a great impact on the rest of the room so think about, not only the other walls but also the furnishings.

Texture can play a big role. For instance – look at the 3d matrix tile for a stone wall effect that is dark, sophisticated and a great backdrop to a real fire. The tiles have a relief effect that literally brings it out from the surface and as it has an elemental feel it works great with fire. In a similar vein, natural-look wood furnishings complement it for the same message.

Make Ceramic Dynamic with Tiled Feature Walls A tiled feature wall can make any space in a room infinitely more interesting. It’s simply a question of deciding which wall to focus on and which design will suit the most. Suzi Hambly of Collinson Tiles offers some ideas to add new dimensions to your home.

You can also see this approach with small tiles against wood, which can really pop colours into a room in a contemporary way. The funky Lollipop tile pattern demonstrates this perfectly.

Sometimes you can create the same effect as a feature wall by presenting a strip of different tiles on a wall as a block, interrupting the regular tiling pattern. This takes some brave decision making and a good eye for arrangement but it can work really well.

Conversely it’s also worth remembering that sometimes a subtle difference is enough to make a big difference to the feel of a room.

In contrast, a feature wall can be an explosion of vibrant colours that arrest the eye. Take the true tile arrangement with 42 different tile combinations where you create a unique pattern to draw focus.

With any feature wall it’s usually a case of toning down the complementary walls so the overall effect isn’t too aggressive.

Don’t forget that light in the room can play a big part as tiles will often look different, especially in terms of reflective surfaces, dependent on the light levels.

You can use tiled walls to influence the light in a room too. When choosing the wall to use, it’s possible to lighten up a dark wall or tone down and protect a wall that is constantly in the sun.

“Look at the fire,” says David Van Vuuren, Jetmaster’s marketing director.

Jetmaster inset stoves have distinctively large windows that feature the whole fire.

Many modern stoves boast about their fuel-burning efficiency but can’t keep their glass clean for long. Their windows quickly darken with soot, blocking the view of the fire. The glass of the Jetmaster stoves stay clean for longer and do so with large windows.

An impressive feat. This is due to their airwash system: an extra thick curtain of preheated air is forced between the fuel bed and the window, ensuring the glass keeps clear. What’s the point of a fire you can’t see?

HETAS guide 2015 qualifies the Jetmaster 18i as the most efficient 18 inch inset stove and the 60i the most efficient mid-size inset stove in the UK. What’s the secret? “Our PureBurn Technology keeps each stove burning at the highest efficiency,” says David. “They achieve blazing efficiencies up to 86%. The science works.”

The technology is made possible through it’s highly-optimised clearnburn system which they call “PureBurn.” Combustion air is superheated through the unit, then reintroduced back in to the main chamber, igniting unburnt carbon particulates in a secondary combustion. It results in increased efficiency and fewer harmful emissions in the atmosphere.

You can choose the fuel that’s right for you — coal, briquettes or smokeless fuels — the 16i, 18i, 50i and 60i Jetmaster stoves are multi-fuel with only the large 70i inset stove requiring a drop-in basket to burn multi-fuel.

Each stove is built in the UK according to rigorous quality standards. Jetmaster says they stand by the longevity of their inset stoves, giving them a 5-year guarantee when registered. Crafted lovingly in Hampshire, England. These are British made stoves designed for British homes.

“People love these fires,” says David Van Vuuren, “and we’re listening to the demand and expanding the range.” That’s why there are now two new wood-only landscape versions: the 60i Low and the 70i Low. The view of the fire has remained a critical design element and this is now experienced through a wide panoramic view, lending to an almost cinematic feel of the fire. It’s a must watch.

Green means unseasoned or freshly cut and has a higher moisture content. It is easier to cut than kiln dried or air dried oak.

Green oak is a renewable source and is used in its raw state without industrial processing. When a timber frame building is constructed the oak is jointed together with pegs, as the timber dries the joints tighten creating a very sound structure.
