36 Openings over 3 Facades A grid of near-identical doors and windows punctures all three visible facades of this seemingly cube-shaped house in Okinawa by architecture studio Rhythmdesign. Named House in Tomigusuku, the three-storey house accommodates a family living just outside Nara – the main city in Japan’s southernmost prefecture. Fukaya-based Rhythmdesign – whose past projects include a house where all rooms overlook the dining table – developed its design around a desire to offer adjustable conditions for every room in the building. This led to the addition of numerous small windows that residents can easily open and close to create crossflow ventilation in different rooms. According to the architects, these
are small and simple enough to be operated by a child. “We aimed to create a situation where the indoor environment can be controlled by our hands, and also works well in the tough climate of Okinawa,” said the team. “In Okinawa, being open and protecting the interior environment The 192-square-metre building comprises a simple rectilinear volume that is square in plan and only slightly larger in height, so at first glance it appears to be a cube. This effect is emphasised by the uniform window arrangement of windows and doors – 12 on each of the three facades – which are all sheltered by blocky canopies that extend out horizontally from the walls.
Trübel, Switzerland The rooms of this remarkable dwelling revolve around the central wall, forming a spiral of interior space The designers of this house in Dielsdorf, Switzerland came up with a unique solution to a lack of available space. Dielsdorf is a small Swiss town northwest of Zurich. The area is dominated by agriculture and by mountains. Although a rural community, Dielsdorf is at the heart of Europe: by car, the centre of Zurich is less than 20 minutes away. No wonder that Dielsdorf has hardly any building land left. One small, steep plot had been vacant and for sale for years, however. Despite its idyllic situation as part of a former vineyard facing south, after complying with all the planning regulations, a buyer would be left with only 5 x 9 m on which to build. A house erected there would have a floor area of 83 m2 at best: a space that made construction financially unattractive. In short, the parcel was considered unfit for building. In an attempt to sell it anyway, the owner turned to L3P Architekten, a firm in nearby Regensberg. He figured the chances of selling the land would improve if there was already a house on it. And

he was right. The current residents bought the house and the land, almost immediately after its completion. Together with structural engineer Urs Oberli, the architects tailored their design to the brief of the original landowner. They excavated part of the mountain slope, inserted a carport and entrance area into the cavity, and opted for an efficient and highly compact skeleton: all choices that resulted in the greatest amount of living space possible. Inspired by the surrounding vineyards, architects and engineer developed a structure of black-painted reinforced concrete; its configuration evokes a grapevine. Step by step, the rooms of this remarkable dwelling revolve around the central wall, forming a spiral of interior space that covers an area of 129 m2. The arrangement is not like that of a conventional house, divided into separate floors. As they climb the stairs, the occupants can pretend to be Jack on his way up the beanstalk. Their beanstalk doesn’t reach high in the sky, though its apex is just under 12 m.

Age of the Energy Efficient Pump
Small circulating pumps are a key component of all wet heating systems in the UK, whether traditional boiler driven systems or new renewable systems. They are responsible for a high percentage of overall household electricity usage, which is why old uncontrolled pumps were targeted by European legislation as a key way of reducing energy usage in the home. From January 2013 high efficiency pumps were demanded by EU Legislation – the much vaunted ErP Legislation. Now, high efficiency pumps have been accepted and are being installed in their thousands across the UK. Wilo’s series of glandless pumps, WiloYonos PICO, Wilo-Stratos PICO and Wilo-Stratos, are seeing increasing popularity across the board. They are relevant for nearly all applications for heating, air-conditioning and cooling in the building services area – from the family home to a small commercial or industrial building. Vastly improved electronics and the arrival of electronically commutated motors (ECMs) for small circulating pumps – provide high efficiency and huge savings over a ten or fifteen year operational lifetime. Folds Bureau de Change A three storey period terrace house in North London, appealed for a scheme that would open up views to the adjoining Parkland Walk conservation area. The focal point of the project is a pleated roof at the back of the house, which appears to be formed from a flat surface, forced to crinkle up into a faceted structure, as it is pushed up against the exterior wall. From the garden, the pleats are purposefully sunk from view, creating the impression of a simple flat roof, which allows the character of the original building to stand out. Forming a side and rear extension, the roof expands the existing kitchen and creates a new dining and work area. The roof pleats are replicated along the party wall, concealing a home office which can be opened up when required. The boundary of the kitchen is marked assertively by the end of the pleated ceiling, which is capped by a midnight blue surface that emphasises its ample
peaks and troughs. The poise of the roof offers natural points for the placement of generous skylights, bringing light into the living area and fulfilling the owners’ desire to see the nearby woodland whilst relaxing in the space. The scheme is characterised by a rich palette of colours, materials and textures, which create a different experience in each space. Large terrazzo slabs, encaustic tiles and tonal parquet, complement the complexion of the original building, whilst enhancing the graphic impact of the angular extension.
Splash of colour for student digs A city-centre student block for Liverpool University has been clad in more than 5,000 m2 of high performance laminate cladding, creating a clean, modern exterior, which echoes the facades of nearby historic buildings. Crown Place is a 1,500-bed student accommodation project in three blocks grouped around a central courtyard. Popular with students because of its proximity to the city centre and the University’s main teaching blocks, it welcomed its first intake last September. Drawing on a materials palette of the surrounding University buildings, Manchesterbased architect Lewis and Hickey opted for Meteon Unicolour cladding panels from Trespa UK for the inner elevations of the blocks which face onto two central plazas that act as communal areas from which the buildings are accessed. “The facades of the three blocks facing outward onto the street were to be in a GRC, reflecting the stonework of the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral and the Reilly Building. The courtyard facades were also to be of the
same tone, maximising the light reflectance to illuminate the courtyard bedrooms,” says architect Philip Daniels. “Trespa panels were the logical choice for the internal courtyard facades, offering a cost-effective option that maintained dimensional and aesthetic stability over time, and would weather well.” Trespa Meteon is a decorative, high-pressure compact laminate with an integral surface manufactured using Trespa’s in-house technologies that utilise dry-forming and electron beam curing. The panels, in 8 mm thickness, were specified for the Liverpool University project. Trespa says they perform exceptionally well outdoors, with neither sun nor rain having any significant effect on the

Planning permission granted for new Worcestershire Parkway Regional Interchange Railway Station Worcestershire County Council’s Planning & Regulatory Committee has granted planning permission for the new Worcestershire Parkway Regional Interchange Railway Station. Groundwork for the £22 million station, which will link the Cotswolds and Birmingham to Bristol lines, is scheduled to begin by the spring of next year and open in autumn 2017. Worcestershire Parkway Railway Station will be situated just outside of Worcester City, close to Junction 7 of the M5 near Norton. The project is identified as a key priority through the county’s Strategic Economic Plan, which is aiming to create 25,000 new jobs in Worcestershire by 2025 along with boosting GVA (Gross Value Added) by almost £3billion. It also has the backing of the Worcestershire Local
Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the area’s MPs, Network Rail and Train Operating Companies First Great Western and Arriva CrossCountry, all local authorities, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce and local businesses. Feedback from a public engagement exercise last year showed further support for the scheme. 91 per cent of people surveyed stated that they supported the plans, which aim to improve the county’s accessibility by rail, cut journey times to key locations including London and reduce road congestion. The station is comprised of a single platform on the Worcester to London line and two platforms on the Birmingham to Bristol line, together with a new station building including a booking office, toilets and shop. It will also have 500 car parking spaces (including disabled provision), bus stops, a taxi rank and a passenger drop-off area. The station will be fully accessible to less mobile visitors and those with disabilities.
Seddon to deliver Keele Innovation Centre Builder and developer Seddon has been appointed to deliver a £7 million stateof-the art innovation centre at Keele University Science and Innovation Park. The project will see the firm build the three storey, 65,336 sqft Innovation Centre 5 (IC5) at the university’s flagship science park. IC5 is the latest in a series of facilities at Keele University Science and Innovation Park, providing high quality office and workshop space for new and existing medical, technology and engineering enterprises.

The framework has seen Seddon build four schools for the council since 2012, with the company also recently appointed to deliver the £5.5 million Veritas Academy primary school in Stafford.

New Homes Bring Jobs Boost And Investment For Uttlesford Uttlesford is set to receive a jobs and investment boost thanks to David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties. 148 homes will be built at Kingswood Place, the David Wilson Homes development on Stansted Road in Elsenham, underpinning 296 jobs. The housebuilder will also invest over half a million pounds in the local area which will include £380,000 for a multipurpose community building. £130,000 will be used to provide play areas while over £20,000 will be invested across primary education, early years and childcare. The broad mix of properties available at Kingswood Place will be designed to suit the needs of the local community and there will be two, three, four and five bedroom homes. Jason Colmer, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “As well as building much needed homes for local people we will also provide skilled employment opportunities and we are delighted our work at Kingswood Place will underpin nearly 300 jobs. Information about the homes available to buy at Kingswood Place will be available later this year. The show homes are due to open in spring 2016 and the first homes will be ready for people to move into next summer. David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties has been awarded the maximum five star official rating from the Home Builders Federation (HBF) for the sixth year in a row. The company was awarded the rating after gaining fantastic feedback in the HBF customer satisfaction survey which involved more than 20,000 new homebuyers across the country answering questions about moving into their new homes.
Lee Butterworth, 43, who trades as English Riviera Building Company Ltd, contracted his brother Scott Butterworth, aged 41, to carry out the work at a house at Crabtree Close, Plymouth. The pair were prosecuted at Torquay Magistrates on Friday 21 August 2015 following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The court heard that Lee Butterworth was carrying out extensive works on the house which included installing a new gas boiler. Lee Butterworth arranged for his brother, Scott Butterworth, to install the gas boiler and gas pipework despite him not being a member of Gas Safe Register. After Scott Butterworth had fitted the gas boiler the homeowner then had a properly registered member of Gas Safe Register at his home to fit a gas cooker. That gas engineer found a gas leak on the gas pipework that Scott Butterworth had installed and classed what he found as ‘Immediately Dangerous’ as there was a real risk of a gas explosion. Lee Butterworth, of Oxley Close, Torquay, pleaded guilty to a single breach of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. He was sentenced to 10 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 2 years and also ordered to undertake 150 hours unpaid community work and ordered to pay costs of £496.60. Scott Butterworth of Marine Drive, Paignton, pleaded guilty to two breaches of Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Nordic’s challenge Nordic, a new company starting out in 2009, had ambitious growth plans. At a time when the property industry was suffering considerably, Nordic knew it was essential to scrutinise all outgoing costs and keep up its values of high standards. Its insurance policies had to be comprehensive and exact, and quickly underwritten to prove Nordic’s security.
In 2013, the developer won a significant £16million construction project to build a 339-bed mixed use student facility at Hope Street, Liverpool. Nordic was briefed to deliver the scheme in 18 months, by the end of Summer 2015. The project would be completed with fully-fitted kitchens and ensuite bathrooms, as well as communal facilities including a cafe, gym and restaurant and bar units.
Nordic had to demonstrate unequivocally that it was a trustworthy and cost-effective contractor, delivering its clients’ schemes on time and within budget. Therefore, it had to be certain that its ten-year structural defects policies would not let them down.
To deliver this major scheme that would project the firm into the next stage of its growth, Nordic could afford no room for error. The need for a reliable and competitive insurance provider was crucial.

One of Bournemouth’s top hotel to reinvigorate its empty and red Done as part of an on going development of the four star hotel, The Miramar wanted to give their old and disused fireplaces a new lease of life.

As the existing fireplaces had their chimneys and flues blocked up, it was thought impossible to re-fashion them back into working fireplaces.
The Edwardian hotel had the fireplaces installed last year, placing the bio ethanol burners inside the original fireplaces.
However, because the EcoSmart fires are clean burning and produce no fumes, they were seen as the perfect alternative.

Old vintage taps – for alternative design are also arresting visually and ergonomically pleasing. The bathroom is a very personal place in the house and a room that can sell a house or prevent a sale depending on its quality. When remodelling you will be making a major decision for your enjoyment but also possibly for your prosperity so think hard before you begin about the end result and get as much expert advice as possible to achieve your aims.

World-leading Centre of Design Excellence Features AluK Twin Wall Façade System University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Swansea has invested £15 million into the refurbishment, restoration and extension of the Grade II listed former Central Library building to create the new Institute for Sustainable Design. Devised by Powell Dobson Architects, the development incorporates a stunning twin wall façade featuring AluK curtain walling systems, complementing and adding a new dimension to the original design. The modern, double skin façade extension provides additional 657m2, and incorporates a new reception entrance off Alexandra Road, workshops, teaching spaces as well as design studios. The original circular reading room has been restored and made available as a public venue. Yvonne Gibbs, architect, Powell Dobson comments: “Due to the context of the Listed Building, it was imperative that the new extension was as transparent as possible to express the original scale and features of the historic fabric behind. The University was also looking for a truly sustainable solution, to both reduce energy consumption and create an inspiring place to learn.” As the main extension to the Grade II listed building, the twin wall façade runs the full 38 metres of the Alexandra Road elevation. Designed by D2e, a multi-disciplinary engineering and management consultancy, the façade comprises AluK SL60 curtain walling system forming the internal wall, and structurally bonded glazed toughened laminated glass skin forming the outer wall, with an interstitial space between them.

“This arrangement provides the transparency that the Listed Building deserves, whilst introducing a number of opportunities for passive climatic control,” says Yvonne Gibbs. “The facade is south facing and therefore through solar gain the space between the two skins heats up naturally. This in turn acts as a thermal buffer, which keeps the building warm in winter months whilst promoting air movement and cross ventilation during warmer periods. It also facilitates the introduction of fresh air into the space, which is attenuated through a series of louvers at the base of the facade to temper noise pollution from the busy road outside.” The gap between the internal and external wall allows to control the flow of air and temperature within the building interior, using the air exhaust louver on top and the air inlet louver at the bottom to create a ‘chimney’. In winter, solar gain can be collected in the buffer zone, brought into the building and offset the heating costs, while in summer, when overheating can be an issue, windows can be closed and heat rejected using mechanical ventilation. Banks of bespoke, top hung, open-in AluK 58BW window system are located on the internal wall open and close automatically depending on weather conditions, regulated by sensors located on the face of AluK’s SL60 curtain walling system. Manual operation is also possible to introduce further air. With a visual sightline of 60mm and a mullion depth of 150mm, the SL60 ensures that stringent aesthetic parameters set out by the architect were adhered to. The horizontal Vierendeel members, also designed to incorporate a 60mm face, ensured that the requirement of visual transparency of the main facades was attained. With demanding structural requirements, the 150mm deep mullion was adequate to conclude and surpass the project specification.

Internally, the SL60 system seemingly spans 12 metres unsupported between structural columns. The support comes from a bespoke design of the aluminium Vierendeel Truss walkways, fixed at floor positions and supported by hanging stainless steel rods that are structurally retained in tension. These in turn act as a carrier for the glass Brise Soleil blades which run the full width of the building following the spectrum of the rainbow. Yvonne Gibbs continues: “They are multi-functional; environmentally, they protect the occupants and their computers from glare and they reduce over-heating. Their multi-coloured appearance, created in conjunction with a local glass artist from the application of a nanotechnology coating, also signals the creativity and aspiration of the University within.” Lee Jones, Senior Design Engineer at System Glaze, the fabricator on the project, comments further: “The SL60 curtain walling system and the external Vierendeel walkway act as a whole; this is the structural design intent, allowing the curtain wall to span over 12 meters - the full height of the lobby - unsupported. Implementation and erection of both elements at the same time proved to be difficult and due to tight programme constraints, the required design could not be delivered. The SL60 needed to be installed and glazed prior to the walkway installation, allowing other trades to progress. A series of temporary restraints and connection brackets were specifically design to ensure the curtain wall could handle the definitive wind loadings applied onto the fully glazed SL60 screen.’’ AluK SL52 curtain walling system, AluK bespoke 58BW window system, as well as AluK single GT55 NI and double GT55 NI door systems were specified throughout the rest of the extension:
Roller shutter screen: AluK SL52 curtain walling with double GT55NI door system insert was installed for a 4m x 7m wall screen that shrouds the roller shutter entrance door and provides ventilation via a run of fixed blade glazed-in louvres.
Lift lobby screen: AluK SL52 curtain walling system with single GT55 NI door system insert was specified for an external 4m screen situated on the second floor that encloses the lift lobby.
Slot screen: AluK SL52 curtain walling system was specified for 17m run of curtain walling screen that is situated directly below the main twin wall screen to bring natural daylight into the basement workshop space.
Internal screens – AluK SL52 curtain walling system was used for two curtain walling screens that overlook reception from the ground and 1st floors. The largest of the screens runs 5.5m unsupported and is internally lined with continuous mullion sleeve inserts with steel plates to provide the required structural properties.
Main entrance - A 12m x 12m structurally glazed spider glass system runs full height of the building and full width of the entrance approach, adjoining the twin wall on one side and the existing Grade II listed building on the other. The glass has a low iron with light grey silicone finish to give the appearance of absolute transparency.
Access from the interior into the twin wall zone is via a set of AluK double GT55 NI door system at each floor position
The glass wall is structurally supported back to a series of internal 525mm deep, 19mm thick toughened low iron glass blades. The 12m span of the blades was achieved with one joint to minimise the amount of stainless steel bracket components.

Door Entry... ...in a day! The Telguard range of telephone and GSM based intercom systems are suitable for new build or retro fit. Telguard is a British company and we design, develop and manufacture here in the UK.
The telephone based system plugs in to a standard analogue telephone socket or phone system extension and the GSM system requires a SIM card. The only other requirement is for local power and the intercom can be installed. Installation is not disruptive as the installation takes place at the entrance to be controlled and there is no need to put handsets into flats or houses as they are already in place – their own telephone or mobile. The telephone numbers of the apartments/houses/businesses are programmed into the intercom system with any access codes required and the system is ready for use. A visitor enters the flat or house number into the intercom via the keypad and then presses the ‘CALL’ button. The receiver of the call picks the telephone and can speak to the visitor and allow access by pressing a digit on their telephone keypad. This sends a signal to the intercom that activates the door lock or entrance gate and the visitor is able to gain access. If the receiver of the call does not want to grant access they simply put their phone down to end the call. If the call recipient is on the phone when the call from the intercom is made the call will be seen on the telephone display and the user is able to hold their call and deal with an access request. Any alterations required to telephone numbers or PIN codes can be actioned by the system installer and can be carried out remotely reducing the need for on-site attendance. The Telguard system is not only quick to install compared with hardwired systems but also extremely flexible. Calls can be answered on cordless telephones making it possible for users to answer entrance requests while going about day to day business or it is possible for a

mobile phone to be called for access requests. We are able to provide systems with backlit keypads and buttons, integrated proximity access and video. The video picture can go to a dedicated monitor or into the communal TV aerial for viewing on any television in the premise. Our GSM 3g video system will send pictures to your mobile phone. Los Limoneros Gus Wüstemann Architects The mandate was clear: design a house that offers privacy from the outside world but opens up to gardens and terraces within its confines. The solution was a familiar one for the setting in Andalusian Spain, where inward-facing patio houses speak of a Moorish heritage. However, in conceiving a vacation retreat for a family of four in Marbella, on the palmy Costa del Sol, Swiss architect Gus Wüstemann has avoided the arcaded courtyards and red-tile roofs typical of the region. He has kept the general idea, but emphasizes the abstracted masses and voids seen in his other work, such as the muscular concrete residence Two Verandas in Zurich. While Marbella’s sunny weather, sandy Mediterranean beaches, and breaking surf account for its popularity, the picturesque village had fewer than 1,000 residents right after World War II. During the 1960s and ‘70s, it became the haven for the so-called jet set, a migratory social flock of aristocrats, showbiz people, and rich political exiles. Attracting such “beautiful people” as Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe, Sean Connery, and former Cuban dictator Fugencio Batista y Zaldivar, Marbella grew as others followed: today the population is over 140,000. It is good to be able to withdraw behind garden walls. Wüstemann’s plan recalls those that Mies van der Rohe developed in his elegant linear-court house projects of the 1930s and ‘40s—only here, as the architect puts it, “much of the program for the house is hidden on the periphery.” Its concrete frame with white plastered masonry infill walls gives it an implacable and impenetrable solidity. Following the

outline of the property—a parallelogram in a compact residential area—you might say the 6,200-square-foot house evokes, on a small scale, fortresses such as the nearby 10th-century Moorish Sohail Castle.
Blanca Mountains. As the spaces unfold, boundaries blur between inside and out. “We just move the furniture outdoors when it gets warmer,” says the client on a 65-degree winter’s day.
The neighbors at first didn’t see this historic connection. Since it diverged from the Spanish Mediterranean or classical-style vocabulary typical of Marbella’s villas, they asked the client if it was going to be a hotel or a department store. As the owner tells it, they even expressed concern to the local government that the design represented a violation of the residential zoning. No, it was simply a house.
Leaving the living area and walking west to the lawn and garden, you pass through an open court, a spatial void that is the center of the house. Bound on the four sides of the second level by expansive grills of slender precast-concrete brick, the court seems enclosed by modern-day Moorish mashrabiyas, which filter light into the corridors leading to the bedrooms, library, and media room.
Stepping through the protective entrance behind the thick walls enclosing the site, you are surprised to find yourself in a light-filled living and dining area contained in a glazed bar. It extends the width of the house, stretching from the entrance vestibule on the north to a minimal kitchen on the south wall—so minimal, in fact, that it is hard to find the stove (concealed by a movable counter) or other culinary appurtenances.
In boiling down the elements of both historic and modern motifs to their essentials, Wüstemann avoids obvious replications of any particular style. His unremitting approach to clean details reveals his architectural training at Zurich’s rigorous Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Yet the fact that he has offices in Barcelona as well as Zurich explains his more casual Mediterranean sensibility and underlies the house’s subtle combination of control and la buena vida.

Rain Storms bring problems and Unifold provides the answers
T
he recent storms where a month’s rain falls in less than a few hours are creating major problems for large warehouses. If the gutter systems and siphonic drains are not in top condition they are simply not able to dispose of the vast amounts of water that come from these very large roof areas and these problems are exacerbated if the condition of the gutters has degraded causing leaks. Such were the circumstances at a major Sainsbury Distribution Centre in Northampton and Distribution Hygiene Services Limited (DHS) were tasked with correcting this situation using the Unifold Gutter System manufactured by Ampteam Limited. Dr. Robert Perryment, the CEO of Distribution Hygiene Services Limited (DHS), has created a high level team that are trained to work safely at height in order to ensure that the gutters and drainage systems are fit for purpose in order to prevent water ingress into these buildings. Dr Perryment says “Gutters really need to be inspected and cleaned at least twice a year. Unfortunately, quite often, roof areas are not visited until a problem occurs. On this site, the gutter system had degraded and leaks were about to become a major problem. Whole roof areas cannot be removed to replace the gutter systems without major disruption to the operational requirements of the distribution centre and ‘quick fix’ plastic paint just isn’t an effective answer in the long term. However, we did have an answer to the problem. t48t

Flushglaze Fixed Skylight for Maximum Light and Space Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze fixed skylight was incorporated into the stunning refurbishment and extension of a Victorian Terraced house in Islington, London. Glazing Vision was chosen to achieve a minimal, contemporary feel in keeping with the rest of the extension. In line with their ethos to ‘minimise framework’ and ‘maximise daylight’, the avoidance of any possible framework has greatly enhanced the overall aesthetic.
Victorian terraced houses typically have minimal space in which to extend, with separate living rooms that often disrupt natural light from entering the building. This required clever design solutions in order to re-model the existing layout to achieve maximum light and space.
Achievements Every aspect of the extension has been designed to create a sense of space and openness to the terraced property, whilst the refurbishment brings with it a relaxed, contemporary style.

Increasing height to create space-saving solutions One aspect of the property that required careful consideration was the uncomfortably low ceiling height above the kitchen of 2.1m. Whereas low ceilings can often lend character and charm to a building, the restricted height in this instance further enclosed the living space and disrupted the natural flow of outdoor light.
In order to combat this, the extension included the demolition of original rooms at both ground and half-landing level above; this gave extra room for a double height ceiling to be created above the kitchen area.

Architecture For London specified the frameless skylight to direct the view to the sky without the visual intrusion of steel framework. Carefully positioned above the kitchen units, the skylight enables natural light to open up a section of the kitchen that would typically have been enshrouded in shadow. Glazing Vision’s skylight, installed to the side of the extension, also provides a constant source of daylight that floods the remainder of the kitchen space as well as the staircase upon entering.

The team, including Nick Wilson, a partner at Bay Talland Associates, wanted to create prestige holiday homes that have a natural appearance and likeness to a modern alpine lodge. To achieve this look they designed the building to incorporate wooden cladding in its construction, surrounded with large terraces to take advantage of the views over the bay.
Red Cedar produces long lightweight lengths of timber with a fine straight grain making this specie easy to cut, saw, machine and fix.
It was important that the Timber length was over 3.3m as they wanted to avoid butt joints which would spoil the façade’s natural look and feel. This was a hurdle that James Latham was able to advise on as Western

Nick Wilson said: “We wanted to create a group of four luxury lodges that would stand the test of time and enhance the already beautiful landscape. The lodges were all sold immediately as they each offered their own bespoke slice of serenity and seclusion whilst overlooking the beautiful Cornish coastline. “We needed to find a company that was large enough to not only provide the long lengths of Western Red Cedar that were required, directly from stock, but one that was also able to take care of the machining and adhere to quick turnarounds, as well as offering technical
expertise and an in-depth understanding of the products they were supplying. James Latham more than fitted the bill and we will have no hesitation in contacting them again for future projects.” Mark Harraway, Timber Manager at James Latham’s Yate depot said: “The Bay Talland project is a fantastic example of how Cedar cladding can add the finishing touches to a building and create the natural looking exterior and eyecatching asthetics demanded by a brief such as this. Golfing in style
A prestigious golf resort off the southern tip of the Korean peninsula chose international market leader in glass solutions, Solarlux, to install a windproof folding glass door system for its new clubhouse. This spectacular clubhouse made of glass and white exposed concrete sits on a rocky coastline on Changseon Island. It is part of the “South Cape Owner’s Club” golf resort which opened back in 2013. With this design, the architects from Mass Studies in Seoul have responded directly to the panorama and topography. The extremely stable and windproof SL 70e system from Solarlux was chosen for this project. Folding glass doors were installed both in the spa area and the clubhouse to ensure a true sense of proximity to nature. A system comprising twelve panels boasts an opening width of over ten metres. When the windows are opened, guests can enjoy the view of the ocean and landscape with all their senses, just as if they were outdoors. The height of the glazing is fundamental to this, which, at 3.5m, seems rather daring given this region’s sometimes harsh climate. A tracking roller-mounted post gives the heat-insulated aluminium section system its outstanding degree of stability. Hollow chamber sections with insulating bars and foam core ensure an excellent level of thermal insulation according to the latest German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV). Moreover, the folding glass door SL 70e is “hurricane tested” to the American standard. This means it is verified as being able to withstand wind forces of up to 300 km/h. Given its panel height of up to 3.5 m, the SL 70e is ideal for shop fronts.

The clubhouse comprises two building sections with ceiling-high glazing which curve outwards like boomerangs. An x-shaped protruding roof joins the two glass structures. The meeting point embraces the characteristics of its immediate surroundings with a golfing swing: To the East it hugs the rocky hills and to the West it reveals the view of the Cape. The deep roof overhang shelters a restaurant, music library and a congress hall from the Southern sun and provides a frame for varied views over the ocean, greenery and hilly woodland. There are more than a hundred private villas spread across the extensive golf facility. This resort also boasts a hotel with 40 suites and a spa with an outdoor pool, snuggling into the rugged coast below the clubhouse. Have I got space Space requirements for a vertical lift
T
he space or footprint of a vertical lift in the building is decided through your requirements. These requirements broadly fit into two categories; whether the lift is going to be used by ambulant people or whether it requires the additional space to be used by wheelchair users. When considering wheelchair users, the usual floor space on the platform or cabin should be at least 1100mm x 1400mm (as required by part M of the Building Regulations). Smaller sizes can be utilized, especially in private dwellings if the size of the wheelchair is known. The lift manufacturer will then have a shaft size suitable for that floor size of the lift.

What about the pit?
The size of the shaft will also depend upon the type of drive system used to power the lift up and down. For example, the MC2000 platform lift by Invalifts has a shaft size of 1250mm x 1560mm which is just a few centimetres larger than its 1100mm x 1400mm platform size. This compact shaft is possible, as a unique chain driven system is used enabling the largest platform size within the smallest shaft.
The other space requirement will be below the lift shaft, as most platform lifts will require a pit of between 55mm and 100mm. The MC2000 needs a 60mm pit, but if a pit cannot be formed then a ramp can be utilised at the lowest door.
If the lift is to be used as a home lift for ambulant individuals then the shaft can be made to very small dimensions. The type of drive system chosen again impacts on the footprint. The Inva Home Lift can be made with an incredibly small footprint size of 950mm x 1150mm. At these compact sizes, a platform lift can easily fit within a stairwell, or other area, taking up no more space than an armchair.
Can I fit an inclined lift in my property?
Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget headroom heights So far we have looked at the footprint space required but we must also consider headroom heights. In particular the headroom height at the top landing will be a crucial measurement. Each lift manufacturer will have a minimum headroom requirement. This measurement is taken from the finished floor level at the top landing to the ceiling or first obstacle. The headroom requirement for a platform lift will usually be less than for a traditional style passenger lift. The MC2000 and Inva Home Lift platform lifts require just 2230mm of headroom whereas the M6000 passenger lift requires 3540mm. Some manufacturers can utilize a smaller door (1900mm high) to bring the headroom requirement down by 100mm.
If an inclined lift for a wheelchair was being considered to deal with a flight of stairs, then the two most critical dimensions would be the width of the stairs and the size of the landing zone (foot of the stairs). There are numerous sizes of platform available but again, the standard for wheelchair use is 1250mm long x 800mm deep for public access requirements. Sizes for private dwellings will vary but can be as small as 800mm x 800mm. When considering any inclined lift the lift manufacturer will provide details of overall measurements depending on the way that the lift is installed including whether it is being wall mounted or stanchion mounted.
