InterContinental Ljubljana to Open 2017 in Slovenia
Compass Hospitality manages 6th hotel in UK
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) together with Delta Holding announces the signing of InterContinental Ljubljana. With 182 InterContinental Hotels & Resorts open worldwide and more than 50 hotels in the global development pipeline, IHG continues to expand the brand’s portfolio in the most soughtafter destinations around the world*. Opening in 2017, the 165-room hotel will operate under a management agreement with IHG, representing the continuation of a long-term partnership between the two companies that was first established in 2007. Delta Holding and IHG also have a management agreement in place for Crowne Plaza Belgrade.

The hotel is just a short walk to Dunajska Cesta, the major shopping and business district, and Ljubljana’s main train station. The new luxury hotel will be built by Delta Holding and construction is due to commence before the end of 2015. It will feature 165 rooms including a presidential suite; two banquet halls accommodating 500 guests each; as well as six board rooms. Within six months of entering the UK market, Asia based Compass Hospitality Group has added the historic and newly renovated Lace Market Hotel in High Pavement, Nottingham under its management. Pulitzer Amsterdam to relaunch in February 2016 Netherlands: The newly restored Pulitzer Amsterdam has announced a February 2016 relaunch. The relaunch will follow a phased restoration of the former 45 year-old Hotel Pulitzer to reposition its 25 interlinked Golden Age canal houses as “one of Amsterdam’s leading luxury hotels”. The 400 year-old canal houses are set in the Amsterdam UNESCO World Heritage canal district. Leading the project is creative director, Jacu Strauss. Formerly a senior designer at Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio, Strauss has led projects including Barbecoa for Jamie Oliver, McCann Erickson’s head office in New York and Mondrian London at Sea Containers. Strauss said: “There is a real understated sophistication about Amsterdam and I have loved immersing myself in the city to influence my visions for the hotel. Pulitzer Amsterdam is the ideal place to start exploring the Dutch capital, each canal house has its own story to tell and I am proud to be instrumental in bringing these to life.” In a phased restoration, February will see the unveiling of the new look across areas including Pulitzer’s Bar, new restaurant Jansz, meeting and event spaces, and 80 guest rooms
on the Keizersgracht canal side of the hotel. The rooms and suites will feature original elements such as beams and fireplaces, accompanied by “an eclectic mix of rare pieces of vintage furniture and modern items from renowned Dutch designers, brass detailing, and headboards reflecting the gables of each canal house”. Also to be revealed are four themed suites with private entrances, influenced by “the narrative of elaborate characters who may have lived in the buildings throughout the years”. The second phase of the restoration will begin in February and finish
in Autumn 2016 when the second wing will open to guests on the Prinsengracht canal side, marking the Grand Opening. Once complete, the hotel will feature 225 guestrooms and suites. General manager Alexander van Gastel said: “Our future lies in our past, we want to stay true to our roots and celebrate the history and heritage of the canal houses - the hotel’s maze of secrets and surprises are what makes Pulitzer Amsterdam unique. We are excited to reveal the new look to loyal guests and to welcome new visitors to join us on our journey.”

Olga Polizzi joins The Gotham in awards Hall of Fame The independent and boutique industry elite joined together recently to celebrate the achievements of two of the hottest names in the sector. Crowning the Independent Hotelier and the Outstanding New Hotel, the Independent Hotel Show Awards, presented by Rate Gain in association with Sky, were presented at a special ceremony taking place on the opening day of the show at Olympia West.

Gotham Hotel blasted onto the super-stylish hotel scene in April 2015, one of the latest hotels to be launched within the Bespoke Hotels group. As a luxurious and sumptuous new arrival in Manchester and the city’s second 5 star hotel offering, owners Bespoke Hotels promised it to be a ‘fun, witty destination and a little bit naughty’. The Grade II listed Art Deco building sits on popular King Street, with this 60-bedroom hotel, 68-cover ’Honey’ restaurant and private members bar Club Brass adding a touch of cool to the city. It’s a distinctive hotel created to capture the imagination, hearts and minds of luxury seekers for years to come. Having opened in September 2015, this new launch marks an exciting new generation of design-led Hilton hotels, featuring high-end, locally inspired food and drink offerings and contemporary interior design.

Inspired by the authenticity and history of the local Bankside neighbourhood, a combination of Urban and Brutalist Architecture and fine polished features reflect the new Hilton Bankside signature design and luxury feel. Designers 22 degrees and architect Dexter Moren Associates were the influential people who brought this 20,325 sq.m project to life. References to the neighbouring Tate Modern can be seen in the lobby flooring, which evokes the famous Turbine Hall, and the unique collection of art displayed throughout the property. Striking bespoke lighting, exposed metal screens, bare brick work, reprocessed
tube station tiles and bespoke joinery all feature, with furnishings inspired by the colours and prints of William Morris. Sculptures by British artist, David Farrer, accentuate the interiors, while reclaimed ceilings and murals have been designed especially for the hotel’s public spaces. The bespoke lighting throughout The Distillery Bar, OXBO Bankside and the guest rooms from Northern Lights are unique and exclusive design for Hilton London Bankside.
The Lobby The bespoke lighting feature in the lobby is from Alexander Calder. Alexander Calder is an American sculptor and draughtsman, a pioneer of mobile sculptures. The glass wall in the lobby is diffused mid-century glass resigned in modern and contemporary way.
The artwork behind reception is entitled “Homage to Mondrian” and reflects on the compositional sense of the great master Piet Mondrian in a series of metal panels of metal panels.
The Porte-Cochère The graffiti artwork sitting on the back brick wall of the porte-cochère is a featured narrative piece by British Artist, Niki Hare.
Guest Room Floors and Bedrooms The design concept in the room is urban industrial with a large focus on lighting however the rooms are designed for ultimate ease and comfort for each of their guests. The artwork in the guest room corridors are from a variety of British artists and certainly very eye catching when you are making your way to your room. With the bathroom having a heated mirror, speakers within the ceiling playing your favourite type
OXBO Bankside Many of the items and design features in restaurant are vintage finds and originals that have been source specifically for OXBO Bankside. The Ghost Mural found in OXBO Restaurant is reference to the original Rose Tea Mural on Union Street, Southwark. The original mural belonged to James Ashby & Sons Ltd at 195-205 Union Street who started importing and selling tea in 1850. Today, The Embassy Tea Gallery occupies an entire floor of the historic James Ashby Tea and Coffee Warehouse as one of London’s most exiting gallery quarters. The ‘MOUNTED NOT STUFFED’ artwork, which is truly incredible, includes a wonderful and varied menagerie of
extraordinary animal heads by the successful British artist David Farrer. His amazing and unique papier mâché trophy heads have won him international acclaim.
The Distillery During the 1800s, The Stephenson & Harwood Distillery occupied part of the Hilton Bankside site which plays a major role in the design of The Distillery Bar today. The ‘Penny Wall’ holds over 16,000 British pennies dating back to as early as 1860. This is our featured art piece in The Distillery. The weight of the pennies meant the wall had to be reinforced to support the load. You’ll also find hints of ‘old world charm’ detailing around the bar decor, which resemble the elegance of a 1930’s Gentlemen’s drinking den.
The Executive lounge The main sculptures are by Simon Bingle and based on a three dimensional reflection of graffiti art. You’ll also find a collection of art from British artists including Damien Hirst, Kathy Dalwood, Tom Otterness, Tom Clark David Farrer and Amelia Coward. The hotel is also a perfect setting for grand celebrations or corporate events with eight flexible meeting rooms and The Bankside Ballroom, a pillar free room which holds up to 700 guests. New Trends Galore at the
January Furniture Show The January Furniture Show, (NEC 24-27 January 2016) will be full of vivid colours, tactile textures and new designs. Over 450 exhibitors are getting ready to present their latest designs and innovations in furniture, home furnishings, lighting, flooring and fabric.

The newest trends will be in copious supply. Seventies inspired riotous colours, big florals and fringing will mix with the more sedate Highland themes of tartans, tweeds and aged leather. Industrial looks with hard edges and grey metals, texture combinations will abound. Our expanding environmental awareness will be reflected in an increase in new products made from a wide variety of reclaimed materials, including wood, plastics and glass.

For wild florals check out some of the new upholstery designs on the Whitemeadow stand in Hall 1, or see some of the flamboyant art pieces in Hall 3. Gentle florals will also feature, see some of the pretty fabrics on the Swaffer stand in the Fabric Pavillion in Hall 1, or head to Gallery Direct and Malini stands in Hall 3 who will be showing tranquil flower patterns on cushions and throws. The current trend for upholstery with a mix of leather and fabric will be at it’s best on the Tetrad and Carlton Furniture stands in Hall 1. Both will have wonderfully aged leather and woven fabric
upholstered sofas and chairs. Tetrad’s Harris Tweeds have been made exclusively for them and are rich in heritage colours and traditional designs. Alternatively for a different feel glide your hand across the smooth tables with marble tops and metal legs on the VIDA Living stand in Hall 4. For different combinations see the Sophia range on the Bentley Designs stand in Hall 1 which combines antique finished wooden tops and silky painted cabinets. Leading the way in the industrial look is lighting, for some of the best head to Dar Lighting and CIMC in the Lighting Showcase in Hall 3. Designs in brushed metals incorporating their construction details and with cables as a feature, emphasise the starkness and uncomplicated attractiveness of the look. Furniture and accessories made from reclaimed materials will be big news at the Show. Baker in Hall 1 will have additions to their Reclaimed series, giving new life to old wood turning it into highly desirable cabinet furniture. Another company skilled in the use of making discarded wood attractive and useful again is Rowico, also in Hall 1, their shabby chic reclaimed tables and cabinets have a unique style. Mixing fabrics will feature heavily with woven fabrics combined with leather a notable trend.

Cabinet giants Baker, Ercol, Willis&Gambier, Morris, Bentley Designs, Mark Webster Designs and Furniture Origins are among the many companies showcasing a variety of new collections with reclaimed woods, distressed painted and mixed textures a strong feature. Emphasis on the origin of the wood and combinations of wood & glass, wood & metal and wood & leather with finishes ranging from muted matt to silky, shiny marble will emphasise the contrasts and texture combinations. Beds and mattresses of every kind – foam, sprung, memory, motion, ottoman will all feature at the Show with previous exhibitors Vogue, Breasley, Serene and Sweet Dreams all bringing new designs and new foam technologies. New bed exhibitors Highgate, Kaydian and Bodyease are a welcome addition and are also bringing new designs ranging from snuggly TV beds to practical
storage beds. The NBF (National Bed Federation) are sponsoring a café in Hall 5, in the heart of the bed exhibitors so that will be a good place to have a coffee and plan your bed tour. Heavyweights in interiors including Gallery Direct, Pacific Lifestyle, Stone the Crows, Dar Lighting, Swaffer, and Axminster Carpets are all like the upholstery and cabinet companies, launching new designs. The 2015 double decker Gallery Direct stand was much talked about and their 2016 stand promises to be even better and jam packed with even more tempting home furnishing delights, including complete bedroom and bedding packages. Dar Lighting, known for their broad spectrum of designs from traditional chandeliers to large individual statement lights, are showing at January for the first time. As well as a selection of their best sellers they are bringing new designs for 2016, including some of their on-trend, industrial style domestic lights. Another newcomer is Swaffer, showing their latest beautiful floral, striped and animal print fabrics, they are set to be a destination stop for anyone interested in the best available fabrics. Titley & Marr, Tigermoth and Ross Fabrics are also launching new fabrics for 2016 at the Show including crushed velvets, silks and woven textures.
International companies are set to make their presence felt with German majors, Nolte Mobel, Rauch and Weimann all taking large stands and bringing their technical cabinet expertise with a touch of panache. Danish, Skovby will show their uniquely engineered and ever appealing dining collections and Italian leather upholstery giants Nicoletti and Italia Living are bringing new designs and soft leathers in fresh colours for 2016. The January Furnitre Show Preview A Rich Feast at the January Furniture Show

Forget feasting at Christmas, the best indulgence will be in January at the January Furniture Show, (NEC 24-27 January 2016). Over 450 exhibitors are getting ready to present their latest designs and innovations in furniture, home furnishings, lighting, flooring and fabric.
The current trend for upholstery with a mix of leather and fabric will be at it’s best on the Tetrad and Carlton Furniture stands. Both will have wonderfully aged leather and woven fabric upholstered sofas and chairs. Tetrad’s Harris Tweeds have been made exclusively for them and are rich in heritage colours and traditional designs evoking the Scottish Highlands countryside.
The newest trends will be in copious supply. Seventies inspired riotous colours and big florals will mix with the more sedate Highland themes of tartans, tweeds and aged leather. Industrial looks with hard edges and grey metals, texture combinations of wood mixed with leather, metal, glass, slate and marble will abound. Our expanding environmental awareness will be reflected with an increase in new products made from a wide variety of reclaimed materials, including wood, plastics and glass.
Hall 1 Will feature high-end upholstery and cabinet furniture, with brands including, Duresta, Parker Knoll, Ercol,
Furniture made from reclaimed materials will be big news at the Show. Baker will have additions to their Reclaimed series, turning tired wood into highly desirable and impeccably designed cabinet furniture. Another company skilled in the use of making discarded wood attractive and useful again is Rowico, their shabby chic reclaimed tables and cabinets have a unique style. Don’t miss the Fabric Pavillion in Hall 1, where Swaffer, Kobe, Essente, Titley & Marr, Barker & Barker and the The Isle Mill will be showing their latest pretty florals, crushed velvets, tartans and crisp stripes.
The January Furniture Show Hall 2 The British love-affair with soft Italian leather upholstery will be indulged in Hall 2. Soft and colourful Italian leather will be plentiful, with new designs from some of the best known companies including Italia Living, Contempo, Tomasella, Ego Italiano Max Divani and Marinelli, as well as new signing Peressini who are bringing their modern style dining tables and chairs. Other well know European brands will have major stands in Hall 2, Skovby from Denmark are bringing their uniquely engineered dining collections and FAMA from Portugal, and ROM from Belgium both will be displaying their latest colourful designs. Greenapple always stand out at any Show with their pioneering glass designs. Their new Rimini range will be shown for the first time and has matching dining tables and chairs, and occasional tables. They will also show their Country Kitchen and Tusk collections. New for the 2016 Show is the Flooring Showcase, bringing together some of the best companies in the UK flooring industry, Axminster, Kenton Floors, Associated Weavers, Brockway, Edel Telenzo and Interfloor will all be showing their latest ranges. Kenton Flooring are exhibiting distressed oaks and contemporary grey washed boards, while Edel Telenzo is bringing it’s new striped loop pile carpet called Liberty, which which has a unique construction giving it a woven look.
Hall 3 This is the all action hall for gifts, accessories and home furnishings of every kind. The list of exhibitors is a Who’s Who in gift and accessories - Gallery Direct, Libra, Pacific Lifestyle, Culinary Concepts, Stone the Crows!, PD Global, Lovelane, Mindy Brownes, Hill Interiors, Camelot, Dar
Lighting, CIMC, Febland, Lifestyle Arts & Crafts and Artko. Many are launching their full catalogues for 2016 at the Show. Some of the highlights include Gallery Direct, another favourite of the 2015 Show who are bringing 150 new products in January. Their intention of offering ‘variety to suit all tastes and styles of room, from beautifully elegant to exquisitely modern’ will be fulfilled in style with a profusion of furniture, mirrors, lamps and decorative accessories. Another gifted trend interpreter is Pacific Lifestyle who are introducing 5 trends at the Show including Loft, an industrial inspired collection of lamps and objects, and Highland Retreat, which has a woodland colour pallet and uses natural materials. New exhibitor Stone the Crows! is introducing furniture collections in beautifully crafted acacia wood with metal as well as a host of unique furnishing accessories. Hill Interiors, CIMC and Mindy Brownes are all exhibiting designs picking up on the current fashion for blocks of vivid colour mixed with muted tones, natural textures and relaxed styling. Key exhibitor Libra will have a kaleidoscope of new collections, including Pearl, featuring inlays in earth colours, Darwin’s Study, a nod to past exploration, and Equestrian full of horsey flair and country exuberance. They will also be showing their newest diverse collection of decorative accessories, including animal sculptures and heads, human form figures, and unique lighting and decorative glass pieces. New for the 2016 is the Lighting Showcase, major lighting brand Dar Lighting are bringing designs reflecting the current trends for edgy industrial, floral and the country retreat. Their comprehensive catalogue includes every kind of light from small bedside lamps to large hotel lobby style, crystal chandeliers.

The January Furniture Show Hall 4 A cabinet paradise is to be found in Hall 4. Some of the best imported and international furniture on the market will be on display. German cabinet giants, Rauch, Nolte and Weimann will all have large stands with bedroom ranges directed at the UK market. Weimann are introducing 8 models and 2 new finishes. Rauch are debuting 3 ranges as well as updates to some of their existing ranges. Forte the Polish giant, will have it’s largest ever stand at the Show and will introduce a new nursery collection to sit alongside it’s better known bedroom, lounge and dining collections. Keeping with the international theme, Ancient Mariner will have cabinet ranges made from mango, mahogany and teak on their stand. Julian Bowen a Show favourite will be introducing the Caymen dining collection, made from solid beech with a walnut finish. This range features a high-lacquer Princess Charlotte bed. Seconique, another show favourite will have new additions to its’ Corona pine range and Kettle will be making a big splash with 83 new oak, pine and painted furniture items. Upholstery won’t be overlooked in Hall 4 with TCS and VIDA Living both showing new designs for 2016. Mini Divani will be demonstrating how they have been successful for 50 years bringing their Tuscan sofa expertise to the UK market.
Hall 5 Added to the Show for 2016 is Hall 5. It will be dominated
by some of the biggest names in the UK beds, upholstery and cabinet markets including Buoyant, Lebus, Kingstown, Serene, Sherborne, Furnico, Morris, Furmanac, Celebrity, Vogue, Breasley, and Sweet Dreams. New bed exhibitors Highgate, Kaydian and Bodyease join the stellar line-up. Beds and mattresses of every kind will be exhibited - foam, sprung, memory, storage and motion. Vogue are showcasing their new vacuum packed mattress range Swift, which has been designed for durability, comfort and affordability. fit for the Queens’ College Cambridge students Queens’ College Cambridge Selected Cambridgeshire based, Strata Panels to design and manufacture furniture for over 100 student bed rooms.
Helen Heath, Queens’ College’s Head of Housekeeping, wanted a local furniture manufacturer to come up with a solution of making bespoke contract furniture that would fit in with the historic feel and dark timbers of the 1911 built Queens’ College Dokett building, as well as a more modern looking style Queens’ College Cripps Court built during the 1970s. Strata Panels based a short distance along the A14 just north of Huntingdon responded to the challenge having made student furniture for over 15 years. “Strata’s Mark Garrood listened to the brief and produced sample pieces of furniture that met our exact criteria and at competitive prices.” - Helen Both designs were made using European Oak veneered MDF, the furniture for the Queens’ College Dokett building had
oak crafted edges that were machined to give the detail a period look and were stained dark brown to match the exposed timbers and wall panelling which gives the building its character. Handles were sourced from India that complemented the furniture’s appearance and completed the antique look. The furniture for Queens’ College Cripps Court had 26mm thick oak veneered carcasses and was finished in a clear lacquer.
Queens’ College Furniture Project – Strata Panels Strata produced wardrobes, desks, desk pedestals, chests of drawers, bookcases, under bed storage drawers and bedside cabinets for 43 rooms in the Queens’ College Dokett building and 64 rooms in Queens’ College Cripps Court. Working closely with the college, installation time was compressed to fit in with building contractors and the start of the autumn term. By working weekends and late into the nights Strata Panel’s own
team of installers completed the 107 rooms in just over a week. Smaller items such as bedside cabinets and storage drawers were delivered pre-assembled, whereas the larger items were assembled in situ. Babis Karakoulas, The Domestic Bursar for the Queens’ College, on seeing the furniture after it had been installed, complimented Strata on how well the appearance fitted in with the age and character of the Dokett building.
Cambridgeshire’s contract joinery best kept secret – Strata Panels Strata Panels are small enough to be flexible and able to meet individual requirements, yet large enough to cope with the volume roll out. “We first started to look at LEDs as a replacement for traditional halogen-based light sources more than a decade ago,” he recalls, “but it was clear that they weren’t bright enough or reliable enough and the whites had far too much of a blue cast in them. However, in the past few years LED technology has developed to the stage where we were able to make the transition from halogen to LEDs at the beginning of 2013. There are now also LED-based units which compare reasonably even with metal halide light sources.” The result is that fibre optic lighting installations now are more economical to operate, have lower maintenance requirements and are generally quieter in operation since they don’t require cooling fans. Largely as a consequence of not needing fans they are also usually more compact than the light sources which they’ve superseded. This means that finding a suitable place to put the light source – the first step in designing a fibre optic lighting installation – is generally easier than it might have been a few years ago, and this can produce cost benefits in terms of shorter fibre runs.

Starscape uses the combination of LED light sources and optical fibres in a wide range of decorative lighting applications from star ceilings and chandeliers to paving and decking lighting for outdoor areas.
“Star ceilings are our core business,” says Peter Fagan, “and we’re confident that nobody approaches this with quite as much genuine enthusiasm as we do. Whether it’s a £200 DIY kit for a nursery ceiling or a large commercial project, we’re keen to ensure that the finished result will be entrancing.” Starscape’s Infinity modular star ceiling system – originally developed for the high-end home cinema sector – allows customers to fit a star ceiling quickly and with a minimum of fuss and disruption, and the firm also can supply star panels to fit conventional 600 x 600mm ceiling grids. Because Infinity is modular – based on 1000 x 1000mm lightweight panels – it is completely scaleable and suitable for phased installations. The default colour of the Infinity panel is black, but other finishes are available for non-cinema applications. Fibre optic chandeliers can add life to a sterile space – in a lobby or stairwell – and since there’s no need to change bulbs in the new LED light sources there’s far less of a maintenance issue involved than might have been the case in the past. Thinking of using small LEDs in accent lighting? A single compact LED light source can illuminate up to 40 accent or crystal fittings, with DMX functionality available at modest cost. Surface Design Show has been running for over 10 years and is the only event in the UK that focuses solely on interior and exterior surfaces, connecting innovative and exciting materials with a specifying audience of architects and designers. Light and Surface are inseparable partners – Light School attendees leave the show having learnt more about lighting trends and how light can affect the appearance of a surface. Now in its third year Light School, presented by Light Collective and supported by the Institution of Lighting Professionals, has established itself as the destination to explore and learn about the relationship between light and surfaces. Light School consists of three parts: The School Room, Product School and the School Newspaper all of which are designed to inspire visitors about the latest in lighting design and lighting products.

As well as supporting the education programme, the Friends of Light School will be setting up their own demo spaces in this dedicated section of the show to ensure that everyone can experience the unique and ground breaking differences that their lighting products can bring to your projects. Confirmed Friends of Light School include the Institution of Lighting Professionals, IGuzzini, Xicato, Applelec, Optelma, Trilux, Concord, LED Linear and Spectral. Spectral has teamed up with Ravensbourne College of Design creating a new lighting module. Students, as part of their course, will be asked to design a luminaire for the manufacturer. The aim is to work with young designers to produce a new free thinking lighting product concept using latest LED technology. The top three designs will be showcased on the Spectral Surface Design Show stand with the winning design becoming the centerpiece.
School Newspaper The School Newspaper sponsored by Xicato is a free newspaper sent out to around 70,000 architects, designers and specifiers as well as being given to every attendee of Light School. It contains articles on lighting design to help ‘students’ remember what they have learnt in the School Room and from the Friends of Light School. The LFC uses a series of processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the presence of oxygen. The output is grey water that is environmentally safe. The machine can digest both raw and cooked foods. The process is totally green because it uses no chemicals. Hotel Uniforms Can Add To Guest Experience When Joie de Vivre Hospitality got ready to open its newest boutique property in downtown Palo Alto, California, in March, one of the biggest sales points for The Epiphany Hotel was the custom employee uniforms by Taylor Stitch. The uniforms, with their clean lines, speak volumes about the hotel’s image, according to Lorenz Maurer, GM of the hotel.
“Taylor Stitch’s uniforms represent a modern take on classic staples … (and) complement the hotel’s friendly service and casual spirit,” Maurer said.
Furthermore, staff gets to choose the uniform that best suits them, with some tailoring to individual taste. Men don slim or classic-fitting dark denim jeans and a slim-fit Oxford button-down shirt in white, light blue, sand or pale gray. The laid-back look is jazzed up by a navy Japanese floral tie with hints of red, olive and white and smartened with an olive green twill blazer—matching the hotel’s décor. Female staff sport tailored Oxford shirts with darting and shaping and can customize uniforms using a floral scarf that can be worn traditionally or as a headband or ponytail wrap.
“This look represents the casual vibe of Palo Alto with the highest attention to detail regarding tailoring and materials,” Maurer said. “Every staff member was measured, and the shirts and jeans were custom made. It’s important for us that the staff looks and feels great. For us this is validating our most precious resource, our staff.”
A brand’s mirror
Uniforms have become a key selling point for global brands and independent hotels alike. Overhauling and investing in staff dress is a major part of creating an image as much as building upgrades, according to sources. Matching dress to brand image is a key consideration. Sofitel is identified with French luxury flair, and uniforms are part of that savoir-faire, according to Sirinate Meenakul, regional director of marketing and communication for Sofitel Southeast Asia and India. That style is being notched up with the growing trend of calling on luxury couturiers for uniform design.
At Sofitel So Mauritius guests are greeted by female staff clad in flowing white robes from fashion designer Kenzo Takada, while Christian Lacroix puts his mark on both the lobby and dress style at Sofitel So Bangkok.

The local look
For some hotel companies, uniforms are all about providing guests with an authentic local experience, according to sources.
“Uniforms at most of the Aman resorts are influenced by the local dress habits of the people, while
keeping in mind comfort and safety at the work place,” said Anand Singh Shekhawat, executive assistant manager of Amanbagh, near Jaipur, India.
He said gardeners and other staff who work in the sun wear a green kurta, which is a traditional tunic. They also wear a Dhoti, which is a waist sash, as well as a traditional red turban to protect their head from the sun. Chauffeurs wear khaki hunting shirts and trousers with a saffron colored turban, reminiscent of those worn by royals when out on hunting expeditions. “Front-office staff wears a white kurta and mogulstyle pajamas. Women wear saffron-colored saris tied in the same way as Rajasthani women from the Ajabgarh Valley, while the saris’ color is influenced by the beautiful Flame of the Forest flowers which bloom in April and make the entire valley look like it is on fire,” Shekhawat added. When Traders Hotel in Yangon, Myanmar, was rebranded to the Sule Shangri-La Yangon in April, custom-made uniforms were at the crux of the rebranding. The uniform is based on the traditional longyi, a large sheet of cloth folded to form a cylindrical shape. Doormen wear uniforms representing the seven states of the country. In keeping with Shangri-La’s credo, the look reflects the city’s mix of colonial airs and Chinese culture, according to Phillip Couvaras, area GM of Sule Shangri-La, Yangon, in a news release. “We make it our business to provide guests with personal experiences and immerse them in the local culture.”
When the Shangri-La Toronto unveiled a new look last year, it was referring not to refurbished interiors but the new custom-designed wardrobe of its lobby lounge staff by red-carpet couturiers VAWK.
The knee-length purple and white dress with side splits and a kimono-like waist borrows from traditional Asian design and architecture, said communications director Kerry Connelly in a news release. “Its shoulders are reminiscent of pagodas found in Chinese gardens. The silhouette is a sleeker version of the traditional qipao dress with a mandarin collar.” In 2012, a redesigned uniform was launched at all Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces’ high-end hotels. The use of handloom saris fits with the group’s philosophy of luxury and that of feeding into local communities, said Rakhee Lalvani, Taj’s public relations director. Taj wanted to help save the dying tradition of the master weavers of Banaras, Lalvani said.
“It is part of our initiatives for providing sustainable livelihoods. Taj believes luxury like tradition needs to be preserved and nurtured,” she said.
