Quirky boutique by the sea up for sale for £1.49m

6

Zanzibar International Hotel, the quirky boutique in St Leonards-OnSea, has gone up for sale with a price tag of £1.49m. The hugely-successful boutique has been put on the market by owner and founder Max O’Rourke, who established the hotel in 2007 and then its award-winning restaurant Pier Nine in 2012. The luxury hotel consists of 8 bedrooms and has proved popular with honeymooners given its real ‘wow’ factor. Using contemporary designs, the rooms evoke the feel of places like Japan, Antarctica, Morocco, Africa and India, boasting spa-style bathrooms with showers that say ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’. Many of the bedrooms provide views over the sea and floor-to-ceiling windows. The Pier Nine restaurant can hold 50 covers and blends a Victorian feel with stylish beach chic. O’Rourke now believes that Zanzibar brand has the potential to be rolled out across the UK, with the original Zanzibar International Hotel becoming the flagship of a small chain. O’Rourke also hopes that an experience operator will snap up

the property. He said: “The Zanzibar may well represent an opportunity for a skilled husband and wife team seeking a lifestyle business in an up-andcoming town by the sea. However, the real potential of the business is in the strength and popularity of the ‘Zanzibar’ brand. As the creator and owner of the business, I envisage the buyer to be an experienced operator with the will and desire to roll out a small chain. With its extensive client list, regular exposure in the national media, its highly effective website optimisation and enviable reputation, The Zanzibar Brand is fully charged to propel the right operator into a much wider Boutique Hotel market.” Andrew Moore, director at Christie + Co’s Maidstone office, says: “Zanzibar International Hotel represents an exceptional opportunity for an investor, skilled owner or couple to take over a remarkable asset with an awardwinning reputation. Over the last couple of years the business has won many accolades and plaudits including; ‘Eatery of the Year (2014), Sunday Times Travel Magazine’s list of ‘Top 63 Hotels in the World’ and most recently the hotel was honoured with a ‘César Award’ by The Good Hotel Guide. “Hastings and St Leonards are on the rise as a tourist destination and a new link road is due for completion in the next 6 months and faster rail links to London are due for completion in the next 18 months.”

News 73% of hospitality operators see soft drinks as growth area

Hand Picked Hotels to sell The Priest House to focus on expansion

More than half (60 per cent) of hospitality operators believe soft drinks have become a more important part of their offering over the last year, yet many are not paying enough attention to their range or doing enough to promote them, according to research conducted by BigHospitality on behalf of Britvic. The survey of operators from across the fine dining, casual dining, pub and hotel sectors, found that 73 per cent believe soft drinks to be an area of growth, but many are not sure how to maximise on the potential this area offers. Alcohol consumption, particularly among 18-24 year-olds, is continuing to decline, meaning there is a chance for the trade to boost sales of innovative and non-alcoholic options. However, half of all operators stock less than 10 different soft drinks brands and only 7 per cent stock 20 or more. Restaurant, hotel and pub staff are also found to be lacking in support for selling soft drinks with 51 per cent of operators expecting staff to up-sell or promote soft drinks yet only 28 per cent had offered training in this area. Britvic’s senior shopper marketing manager, Russell Kirkham, said as consumer interest and awareness of soft drinks was at an ‘all-time high’ operators should be devoting as much time ‘fine-tuning’ their range as they would with their food or alcohol offerings.

Hand Picked Hotels has exchanged contracts to sell The Priest House Hotel, Derbyshire, as the group focuses on larger hotels for the award-winning collection. The Priest House Hotel is being sold to Derbyshire businessman Stuart Garner, CEO of Norton Motorcycles, based near the hotel in Castle Donington. The purchase is a personal acquisition by Stuart Garner. The hotel is being sold as a going concern and employees will be transferred to the new owner. The sale will be completed on 29 January. Set in 54 acres of grounds at Kings Mills, Castle Donington, in picturesque countryside, the AA 4 Star/2 Rosette Priest House Hotel is a converted Norman mill tower and 17th century cottage on the banks of the River Trent, with 42 guest bedrooms and suites, and extensive conference and banqueting facilities Stuart Garner said: “Already owning and operating Donington Hall, the

acquisition of The Priest House Hotel our neighbouring property, makes perfect sense. Combining the two properties gives operational scale and a fabulous offering to our clients. With a combined 80 acres of grounds, bordered by an ancient deer park and the river Trent, our location is second to none.” Julia Hands, Chairman and Chief Executive, Hand Picked Hotels, said: “The Priest House is an attractive property in a lovely setting. However, we do have a concentration of hotels in the Midlands, with gaps elsewhere geographically which we would like to fill. We are keen to add additional slightly larger hotels to the Hand Picked Hotels collection and we continue to search for hotels in strategic locations across the UK.” As part of the move to focus on larger hotels in strategic locations, Seiont Manor Hotel, Caernarfon, was also put up for sale by Hand Picked Hotels earlier this year with an asking price of offers in the region of £2million for freehold interest.

The scale of opportunity for a super-budget hotel chain is ‘much greater than previously anticipated’, according to budget hotel chain, EasyHotel. EasyHotel’s new management team has accelerated the company’s plans to target the opportunity in the sector after it released its annual financial report. The chain’s new chief executive, Guy Parson, said that the basis of its business model and strategy is ‘sound’, opening the possibility of entering the super-budget hotel market. “We have made key changes to our operations and management structure and we have the opportunity to

increase significantly the pace at which we open hotels and firmly establish ourselves as the leading branded super budget hotel operator,” he said. “We also conducted a thorough review of the UK and European hotel markets, which has helped us to identify a number of towns and cities where we wish to have owned or franchised EasyHotels.”

The Schoolroom is sponsored by iGuzzini and welcomes mondo*arc as its media partner. The feature is always a huge hit, attracting over 400 architects and designers – leading to standing room only. Sally Storey said of her 2015 lecture: “Every seat was full, people standing outside the door – great turnout! Interesting questions showing the audience benefited and were engaged”.

Product School Product School provides architects and designers with a comprehensive review of lighting innovation and interesting technology. This is where architects and designers can come to touch, compare and learn about products and services. Product School is made up of contributions from the Friends of Light School. As well as supporting the education programme, the Friends of Light School will be setting up their own demo spaces in this dedicated section of the show to ensure that everyone can experience the unique and ground breaking differences that their lighting products can bring to your projects. Confirmed Friends of Light School include the Institution of Lighting Professionals, IGuzzini, Xicato, Applelec, Optelma, Trilux, Concord, LED Linear and Spectral. Spectral has teamed up with Ravensbourne College of Design creating a new lighting module. Students, as part of their course, will be asked to design a luminaire for the manufacturer. The aim is to work with young designers to produce a new free thinking lighting product concept using latest LED technology. The top three designs will be showcased on the Spectral Surface Design Show stand with the winning design becoming the centerpiece.

School Newspaper The School Newspaper sponsored by Xicato is a free newspaper sent out to around 70,000 architects, designers and specifiers as well as being given to every attendee of Light School. It contains articles on lighting design to help ‘students’ remember what they have learnt in the School Room and from the Friends of Light School. There is also contact information for the School Room ‘teachers’. Light School is very proud of its School Motto: Inspired by Light. The ambition is for ‘students’ to leave Light School full of inspiration and ideas of how to use light within spaces and buildings. The educational journey begins here. Sleep 2015

celebrating hotel design and igniting debate Celebrating its 10th year, Sleep, Europe’s hotel design and development event, raised the bar yet again at London’s Business Design Centre on the 24th and 25th November 2015. A record-breaking count of over 4,000 global visitors experienced beautifully constructed displays from top international exhibitors and experiential installations that ventured into the frontiers of imagination. An illuminating conference programme saw authoritative design voices pose questions about the hotel sector today and share their vision for tomorrow’s hotels. An outstanding two days for exhibitors Lovingly curated for diversity in style and products, over 150 exhibitors from around the world displayed their newest launches. Recognised as an exhibition where business gets done and influential contacts are made, Twitter’s response to the show told its own story:

Overseas brands showcasing excellence German lighting legend Ingo Maurer made his UK debut at this year’s Sleep, while other international companies like Turkish furniture manufacturer Parla Design, Spanish outdoor furniture brand Vondom, Contardi Lighting from Italy, and Lightyears from Denmark joined the line-up. Czech company Preciosa welcomed visitors as they entered the show with an ethereal lighting installation ‘Souls’. Best of British hotel design Britain was well represented too, with textile company Walker Greenbank Contracts launching its new digital portal Style Library Contract and product line Anthology at Sleep, Perrin & Rowe debuted at Sleep with its new Deco Collection created in collaboration with design studio Goddard Littlefair, and returning to the show, Dare Studio showcased its 2015 collections. Beautiful stands raising the bar higher than ever The imagination, creativity and hard work that go into building the exhibition stands were evident. Jonathan Young, Sales Director for returning exhibitor Morgan Furniture, recognised “the importance of creating a stand that builds visual interest and shows innovative new products and the latest developments.” Many commented that it was the best looking Sleep yet. More installations than ever Sleep examined the evolving

Preciosa approaches to hospitality design in a thriving marketplace where differentiation is the name of the game: The flexibility competition by Snoozebox A new format from portable hotel designers Snoozebox was unveiled in the forecourt of the BDC. A flexible concept called STAGEzzz created by competition winner OHØYstudio used products and technology from sponsors Egger and ABB. The team of three international architects based in Norway created an elegant yet uncomplicated solution, a piece of “superfurniture” that functions as a stage while storing folding furniture, linen, mattresses and luggage. Weaving a WonderTale The Sleep Set installations offered abundant inspiration for hotel groups and owners to think more about what is possible. Guided by this year’s theme “Wonder Tale”, five competing teams from Areen Hospitality, Anita Rosato, THE STUDIO at Harrods, Shaun Clarkson ID and Oliver Heath Design + Interface Hospitality designed and built guestrooms inspired by the essence of fairytales, tapping into the prevailing hotel design culture of “storytelling”, but with the richer, darker and potentially more disruptive notion of the surreal. And the winner is...

The sets were judged by three influential figures from the world of hotel architecture and design: Erik Nissen Johansen, Founder and Creative Director of Stylt Trampoli, Javier Hortal, Director of Technical Services at Mandarin Oriental and Katy Ghahremani, Partner at MAKE Architects, with the winning design from Shaun Clarkson ID. Shaun commented, “We are in the business of creating fantasy worlds, so the theme of ‘Wonder Tale’ was a gift allowing our imagination to run wild. We believe hotel rooms should be somewhere to get lost in a magical environment and are delighted to have won The Sleep Set 2015. We had such fun creating our very own fairy tale room telling our own story and are thrilled we captivated the judging panel.” Celebrating 150 years of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Guided by the same fantastical Wonder Tale brief, hospitality design luminary Conran+Partners designed the Drink Me Bar, in association with Sleeper. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in its 150th anniversary year, the studio created a magical escape that played with scale and perception to deliver a whimsical charm. The Drink Me Bar also featured a dreamlike and surreal sound concept by Music Concierge.

Through their stand designs exhibitors expressed themselves more conceptually and creatively than ever, the conference sparked what felt like a conversation to be continued and the Sleep Set theme extended to the show entrance, the bar and into the conference. NEW! Bed Bug

Heat Treatment Equipment

For Hotels

B

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

ritish Bug Control, which offer hotels 100% guaranteed eradication of bed bug outbreaks, is breaking new ground by offering hoteliers equipment to carry out their own heat treatment on bed bugs. On display for the first time anywhere in the world at the Independent Hotels Show, the mobile unit allows the hotel manager to react immediately to a complaint about bed bug bites, and means that rooms can be treated by maintenance and back in action the same day, saving lots of hassle and money. Heat is acknowledged as the best way to tackle bed bugs because, unlike insecticides, it kills the eggs as well as the insects themselves. The unit, which requires only one operator and no special pest control qualifications, runs off normal three-pin electric sockets. It works at the touch of a button by generating hot air, which is pumped to a thermal tent pod folded over the bed and furniture. Temperatures are monitored with remote sensors and the consul produces a stamp dated report indicating the room number with temperature and time details. Hotel rooms can be treated effectively very quickly and all

training is provided. The introduction of this system represents an amazing opportunity for hotels to take control of the growing bed bug problem for the first time. British Bug Control also offers its guaranteed eradication solutions through its own services, plus a complimentary range of products designed specifically for the hotel trade, including quick-view bed bug monitors, luxury bed bug mattress and pillow encasements, mattress disposal bags and heat treatment preparation kits; all under their Cimexine Sure-Guard brand. Hotelier’s Action Plan to Capitalize on the

Mobile Channel Boom In the first half of 2015, the age-defining shift from desktop to mobile and tablet devices continued its rigorous pace: more than 21% of online bookings and nearly 19% of roomnights are generated from non-desktop devices (smartphones + tablets), while 45% of web visitors and nearly 40% of page views come from tablets and mobile devices (HeBS Digital Research). According to Google Research, nine out of ten people are “cross-device” Internet browsers and researchers, using multiple devices sequentially (moving from one device to another at different times). Smartphones are by far the most common starting point for sequential activity: 65% of users start their research on a smartphone and 60% continue on a desktop device. As an example, 55% of users use multiple screens sequentially when researching pricing information in travel.

Sources of Traffic and Revenue by Device Category in the first half of 2015:

Notable developments in the first half of 2015: • Nearly 21% of bookings, 19% of roomnights and 17% of revenue came from non-desktop devices, i.e., tablets and mobile devices. If we include voice reservations originating from the hotel mobile website, more than 30% of bookings and revenue originate from the non-desktop channel. • 45% of web visitors and nearly 40% of page views were generated via non-desktop devices (mobile and tablet).

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

• Tablets generated nearly 50% more revenue and 20% more roomnights than “pure” mobile devices.

34

The explosion of cross-device user engagement presents a monumental challenge to hotel marketers: creating and managing a digital presence across three distinct distribution and marketing channels (desktop, tablet and mobile), and engaging this new cross-device travel consumer at every “touch point.” Hoteliers must invest in and take advantage of this rapidly developing multichannel, multi-device world.

The Shift from Desktop to Mobile and Tablet is Monumental: Across HeBS hotel client portfolio, consisting of thousands of hotel properties, we saw this shift occur in every data category.

• The iPad outperformed all other tablet devices and was responsible for 92% of tablet revenue and nearly 90% of bookings and roomnights. Compare this to just two years ago, the first half of 2013: • Non-desktop devices (mobile and tablet) generated less than 12% of bookings, roomnights and revenue, and less than 30% of web visitors and 28% of page views.

The Disruptive Shift Continues Year-over-Year: We are witnessing unstoppable year-over-year growth in the mobile and tablet device categories, while desktop traffic, bookings and revenue lose ground.

Hospitality Technology

Mobile vs. Desktop: Percent Increase/Decrease in First Half 2015 vs. First Half 2014:

merchandising and reservation abandonment prevention capabilities, it is time to upgrade.

Invest in a Content Management System (CMS) with revenue-driving technology.

• Almost all desktop metrics are on the decline, yearover-year, including bookings, revenue, and website traffic. • Bookings on desktop websites declined by nearly 6%, while increasing by 122% via mobile. • Mobile revenue increased by over 135%, an indication that travel consumers are becoming comfortable transacting via their smartphones. • Mobile roomnights had the greatest YoY increase of nearly 156%, an indication that mobile bookings are becoming mainstream and moving away from lastminute, spur-of-the-moment booking decisions.

Hotelier’s Action Plan to Take Advantage of the Monumental Growth of the Mobile Channel What should hoteliers be doing to meet the challenges created by this dramatic shift from desktop to mobile and tablet? To begin with, hotel marketers should view these challenges as new opportunities for revenue generation and customer engagement across all three “screens:” desktop, mobile and tablet.

Here are a few action steps to help hoteliers address this multi-device user behavior we are seeing today: 1. Optimize the Hotel Website’s Presence on the Three Screens: Desktop, Tablet, and Mobile Hoteliers should optimize their presence on all three channels to provide the best user experience on each device (desktop, mobile, tablet). These three screens are only the beginning. We have yet to tackle the new threats and opportunities arising from wearable devices, connected car devices, etc. In the very near future we will be talking about a 5-, 6-, or 7-screen digital marketing and distribution world.

Invest in your property website. Optimize your presence on the three screens. If your property website is two or more years old, does not offer responsive or adaptive design, does not support the best user experience on the three “main” screens, and crucial targeting capabilities like dynamic content personalization, or does not have state-of-the- art

Choose Responsive or Adaptive Design wisely The main difference between Responsive and Adaptive Design is the type of content as well as the manner in which web content is served on the different devices: desktop, mobile and tablet. Traditional Responsive Website Design serves the full (and same) website across all devices (desktop, smartphone, tablet) by modifying and reshaping the exact same website to fit into each screen size, from large desktop screens to small smartphone screens. The intent is to optimize the “viewing” experience regardless of the device being used by the website visitor. • Choose Responsive Design for simpler websites that do not need more than 15-25 pages of content: restaurant websites, and websites for select-service to midscale-service properties. Design should be simpler and content should be kept minimal so the user experience is not compromised. Adaptive Website Design – aka Responsive Design on the Server Side (RESS) – customizes website content and the overall user experience to the device (desktop, mobile, tablet) the website visitor is using. This is achieved from the same Content Management System (CMS), and ensures the maximum user experience, relevancy of information and conversions by device. • Choose Adaptive Design for premium, luxury, boutique, upscale and full-service properties, multiproperty and brand websites with deeper content, extensive imagery, and a complex product offering and content sections.

2. Optimize the Hotel Website for the Google MobileFriendliness Algorithm Update The Google Mobile-Friendliness Algorithm Update, which Google instituted back in April 2015, gave preferential rankings to websites deemed by the Googlebot as being “mobile-friendly.” The search engine’s all-powerful algorithm now favors sites that are configured properly for display on mobile devices, taking front-end design and back-end development considerations into account. Google assesses whether or not a page is mobilefriendly on a pass/fail basis. If a page or site satisfies

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Here are the most notable developments in the first half of 2015 compared to the same period in 2014:

Choose a CMS technology that supports both responsive and adaptive design and empowers you to seamlessly manage your website presence on the three screens via a single dashboard while engaging users and maximizing revenues from the direct online channel.

its front- and back-end requirements, it receives a passing grade and could earn higher rankings on search engine results pages, as well as a special “Mobile-Friendly Badge” to identify the content for its mobile user-friendliness.

Perform a Website Technology Audit: Audit whether your property website’s content management system (CMS) is engineered to comply with the latest Google Update. Using industry-leading technology as the backbone of your hotel website is the best way to ensure your site stays compliant with Google’s mobilefriendliness requirements. For example, HeBS Digital’s award-winning CMS technology –the smartCMS – provides the flexibility and responsiveness so that when such algorithmic updates occur, we are able to immediately act on them and roll out automatic updates to ensure mobilefriendliness, even as Google’s requirements evolve.

3. Optimize Your Digital Marketing Efforts and Embrace Multichannel Marketing Multichannel Marketing is essential to reach customers throughout their travel planning and booking journey. According to Google research, the average travel consumer goes through a very laborious journey before making a booking decision that involves eight research sessions via

Perform a SEO Technology Audit: Performing an SEO audit of your website, including a full audit of link structure, re-sizing of images, reconfiguring design elements, or replacing Flash with crawlable, search-friendly code, allowing the Googlebot to crawl CSS and JavaScript, is vital to ensure your website complies with Google’s mobile search requirements.

Make Sure Your Property Website Has User-Centric Content & Website Design:

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

In addition to running your hotel website on an adaptable and mobile-friendly CMS technology, remembering to create and display content with the user in mind is critical. Google’s emphasis on mobile usability should only reinforce the importance of designing and developing websites and creating content that benefits the user and serves a valuable purpose.

36

Boost Website Download Speeds: Audit your website’s download speeds, especially on mobile devices. Slow mobile download speed is “killer” of mobile usability and a big no-no, according to Google’s latest Mobile- Friendliness Algorithm Update.

various devices and 18 site visits: Keeping the consumer engaged at multiple touch points and reaching them multiple times throughout their journey (through which you will also be competing with the OTAs and other hotel websites) requires using multiple channels on multiple devices to tell your hotel’s story. This is where multichannel marketing becomes very handy, indeed. Each of the three screens (desktop, mobile and tablet) must be integrated in the hotel’s marketing strategy. Multichannel marketing should become the centerpiece of every hotel marketer’s overall marketing and distribution strategy in order to reach consumers at every touch point. In conclusion, hoteliers must optimize their presence on all three screens to provide the best user experience and maximize customer engagements on each device (desktop, mobile, tablet). The three screens are only the beginning. We have yet to tackle the new challenges and opportunities arising from wearable devices, connected car devices, and others. In the very near future we will be talking about a 5-, 6-, or 7-screen digital marketing and distribution landscape.

Is Your Venue Prepared For Visiting Electric Vehicle Drivers? Demand for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) in the UK over the last two years has risen dramatically, bringing with it a growing number of motorists who regularly require facilities from which they can recharge their vehicle. Speaking to Hotelier & Hospitality Design, Rolec’s PR & Marketing Manager Nathan Black commented: “As almost every leading vehicle manufacturer has launched, or is set to launch, new EV and PHEV models over the coming months and years increasing numbers of venues across the UK are installing EV charging points. “Hotel and hospitality venue owners may be under the wrong impression that installing an EV charging point is complicated, costly, and disruptive - this could not be further from the truth. We offer EV charging units which are low cost, simple to operate and easy to install, involving just a dedicated live, neutral and earth circuit which any electrician should be able to handle.

R

What Are EVs? Electric Vehicles (EVs) come in two forms – pure EVs and PHEVs: • PHEVs have a plug-in battery and a petrol or diesel engine • ‘Pure’ EVs are powered by a rechargeable battery and driven purely by an electric motor

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Is your venue EV ready?

olec EV issued the alert to the industry after the number of UK motorists who bought an EV between January and September this year was shown to be up 139% on the same period last year. These latest statistics place the nation second in Europe for sales. Add to this a new report by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) stating that half of drivers planning to buy or lease a new car in the next few years are considering an EV and there can be little doubt that EV charging is fast becoming a major requirement across UK hotel and hospitality venues.

41

Hospitality Technology “There are many solutions to different EV requirements available - from entry level EV charging units through to futureproof payto-charge options featuring coin/token mechanisms. Prices start at £282. “With domestic sales of EVs and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) experiencing a huge increase, now is the time to expect huge demand for EV charging point facilities from your EV driving customers. “The Government is investing heavily too – more than £500million has already been put into the EV industry in the UK, and much more has been made available to further stimulate and support the uptake of electric vehicles and increase the charging infrastructure.” With the leading vehicle manufacturers bringing out new EV and PHEV models on a consistent basis, and with huge running cost savings on offer, it is not only homeowners who are taking up the advantages EVs have to offer. Businesses are too, with many fleet drivers now also having a pressing requirement for easily accessible EV charging points. Nathan continued: “One of the questions we are constantly being asked by people in the hospitality industry is: ‘How can we provide an easy to install electric vehicle charging solution without major upheaval and huge cost?’ “The good news is that it is not necessary to dig up a carpark or grounds in order to install EV charging points to suit your customers’ needs. We offer an altogether painless way of providing EV charging to those who need it.”

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Rolec, an award winning Lincolnshire based company, is believed to provide the widest range of electric vehicle charging points in Europe and has manufactured and supplied over 35,000 charging points throughout the UK in the past two years. Some of its customers have so far included Best Western, Hilton Hotels, Holiday Inn, DFS, McDonald’s, Next, Tesco and Ryanair.

As a tourist, at the top of your list of places to visit in the City of Antalya is the the historical old town known as Kaleiçi with its award winning yacht harbor.

Liberty Hotels Lara

City of Antalya Antalya Kaleiçi is located in the heart of the City and was once home to many conquering civilisations. Founded in the second century BC the King of Pergamon ( Attalos II) was searching for paradise on earth. On his travels, he found a unique location on the Mediterranean coast, miles of golden, sandy beaches at Konyaaltı and Lara, bright sparkling waterfalls, pine forests, exotic flowers, the magnificent backdrop of the purple Taurus Mountains and of course, beautiful weather for almost 300 days of the year. Antalya has also been conquered by the Greeks, Byzantines, Selçuk and Ottoman Turks. Many notable historical figures such as Alexander the Great and Hadrian have also passed through Antalya at one time or another. For many centuries, four cultures (Turks, Greeks, Jews and Christians) co-existed together side by side in harmony. Today, Kaleiçi is visited by nearly every tourist who comes to Antalya. There are countless hidden gems in Kaleiçi and the simplest way we can describe Kaleiçi to first time visitors to Antalya is like this;

The ancient Roman walls majestically traces around the outskirts of Kaleiçi sloping gently down to and along the natural harbor. Within the walls, there are hundreds of narrow, winding cobbled streets lined with nearly three thousand Ottoman houses and the inspirations have been derived from Helenistic, Roman and Byzantine architecture. These once derelict grand Ottoman houses have been painstakingly restored back to their original features and character with protruding balconies, arched windows, ornately hand carved wood doors and decorative motifs and Islamic calligraphy. Today, many of the Ottoman houses have been tastefully transformed into shops (selling an abundace of ‘original designer reproductions’ as well as quality gifts, souvenirs, spices and local handicraft), bars, restaurants, nightclubs, boutique hotels, museums, antique shops, art galleries, patisseries, coffee shops and so much more. The streets are vibrantly adorned with bougonvillea flowers and the enchanting fragrance from the Jasmine flowers further embodies the quintessential charm of Kaleiçi.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Kaleiçi nestles in the cliffs that winds along the Antalya coastline from Konyaaltı to Lara flanked either side by two parks, Ataturk and Karaalioğlu park. The views from both parks in every direction are truly sublime, stunning and breathtaking.

49

Wherever you may be in Kaleiçi, the views of the breathtaking Taurus mountains, cliffs, the golden expanse of Konyaaltı beach and the turquoise and blue waters of the Mediteranean are truly awe-inspiring. Unlike other popular tourist resorts along the Mediteranean and Aegean coastline (distinctive Greek architectural influence), walking around Kaleiçi gives you the sensation you are embracing the legacies left by the Seljuks and Ottoman empires. In the evenings, Antalya Kaleiçi takes on another mesmerising facade as the sun sets beyond the Taurus Mountains creating a magical siluohette as daylight merges into night. The historical landmarks such as Hadrians gate, Roman clocktower, Hirdirlik tower, broken mineret(Byzantine cathederal and mosque) the imposing Roman towers that once gaurded the City, Tekeli Mehmet Mosque, The Yılvı Minaret are all alluminated as they stand majestically as prime advocates of Kaleiçi’s formidable past. The ‘İki Kapılı Han’(covered bazaar), once a centre of trade for aromatic spicies, fruits, vegtables and vibrant silks in the 14th century has been painstakingly restored and trading of the modern kind takes place until midnight (during the summer). The main square known as Cumhüriyet Square plays host most evenings to the dancing fountains accompanied to classical, contemporary music and a visual lazer show which is not to be missed. The mouthwatering aromas of kebabs from Kebab street waft through the air drawing you closer to a delicous döner feast. Guests kindly note, in particular those with mobility issues. Next to the Roman Cloctower take the road on the right and enjoy strolling through the vibrant winding streets whichs leads along the base of the Yılvı minaret(fluted minaret), underneath the natural arch. After the historic arch, look to your left hand side and you will see the newly constructed lift that automatically brings you to Cumhüriyet Maydan(Republic Square). After the lifts turn left and walk down the slight gradient and welcome to the pictureresque and enchanting Antalya yacht harbor.

Antalya Aquarium As a tourist the Antalya Aquarium opened in the summer of 2013 and is considered to be one of the largest aquariums in the world. The Antalya Aquarium inspires, entertains and educates. It’s home to thousands of species, and tens of thousands of underwater creatures!

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The decoration of the aquarium’s main tank was created by the famous Italian sculptor Benedetti. It incorporates life-sized plane, ship, and submarine wrecks, and is the biggest coral reef decoration in the world. Travel along a path of over 40 exhibits, followed by the world’s largest underwater tunnel aquarium that’s 131 meters long and a width of 3 meters.

A visit to the aquarium is a terrific way to spend a day out with numerous activities such as, making snow balls from real snow in Snow World. Step into a journey among the most poisonous, colorful and interesting species of the world in tropical reptile house; Fear Trophy. You can sail the world seas with multi-dimensional movie technology 50 in Oceanride XD Cinema.

Aspendos Antalya Situated in close proximity to the traditional, local town of Serik in Antalya province, Aspendos impresses its visitors with its elegant amphitheatre and other ancient remains. Because of its location close to the trade routes and the Köpruçay River, Aspendos has always been a rich town many rulers desired to dominate. The amphitheater in Aspendos is the oldest and best preserved Roman amphitheater in Anatolia. The visitors find it very exciting to watch the annual Aspendos concerts, plays and ballet performances on a stage that has witnessed many centuries. The aqueducts in Aspendos are also very impressive signifying the advanced engineering of its time. As a tourist, a must is to walk around the back of Aspendos amphitheater to the Basilica at the top.

Düden Waterfalls Antalya As a tourist, the Duden Waterfalls in Antalya make a pleasant trip from the Liberty Hotels Lara and its surrounding gardens are a popular picnic spot with locals.

Upper or inner Duden waterfall(Inland); 15m (49ft) in height and 20m (65ft) wide and once set in a pleasant rural landscape. Today, the rapid expansion of Antalya City has meant the upper or iner Düden waterfalls have almost been engulfed by high rise developments. A natural cave has formed behind the falls and it is possible to sit here and watch the cascades. There are restaurants, boardwalks and picnic tables in the gardens immediately surrounding the falls to help you make the most of this scenic spot.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The Duden river extends from the Taurus mountains all the way to the Mediterranean and creates two cascades know as the Upper and Lower Duden Waterfalls.

DON’T LET BAG THIEVES SPOIL YOUR FUN THIS CHRISTMAS

As the festive season gets into full swing, and people get ready to go out and enjoy themselves, it’s important to keep a closer eye on personal belongings. Bag theft traditionally increases on the run up to Christmas, so many bars, hotels, restaurants, pubs and cafes across the UK are offering customers a clever and inexpensive solution to the problem. Venues such as The London Bridge Hotel and Sheraton Park Tower Hotel as well as chains such as Park Plaza and Intercontinental are using the Chelsea Clip in bar and dining areas where they can be fitted inconspicuously under tables to guard against bag snatchers.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The Chelsea Clip is a unique deterrent, which has a proven track record of preventing opportunist bag theft from public places.

52

Produced by security company Selectamark, it is an injection-moulded nylon hook from which a bag or rucksack can be suspended by its own strap. Two hands are needed to remove an item from the Clip, making ‘bag snatching’ virtually impossible. It can be easily fitted to tables, walls, bars, behind lavatory doors - in fact, anywhere a customer may need to secure their belongings.

Virtually any public place offers rich pickings for bag thieves with research from retailer John Lewis showing that a woman’s handbag could contain over £1,000 worth of valuable goods including cash, beauty products, an iPad mini, an iPod and a mobile phone. Luxury department store Harrods uses the Chelsea Clip to deter handbag theft and has them placed under tables in their bar and dining areas. The Clips are also being used to protect customers at the Charlotte Street Hotel in Fitzrovia, London. Suitable posters and other display material such as window and menu stickers should always be used in conjunction with The Chelsea Clip as a deterrent to thieves and as a reminder to both customers and staff that the clips are there to be used. The labels, which carry the wording ‘Secure your bag here’ can be placed around the neck of a wine bottle to advertise the clips. One London council had the labels printed in different languages so that tourists and visitors to bars and restaurants could be alerted to the risk of bag theft but protected from it at the same time. Fibre optics made easy “A marriage made in heaven” is how Peter Fagan, sales director at fibre optic lighting firm Starscape describes the combination of optical fibres and the new generation of LED-based fibre optic light sources. This woven sphere of sparkle fibre can be made in a range of sizes and can be hung singly or in clusters.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Blue Infinity star panels resulted in a significant increase in business for this Midlands restaurant.

58

“We first started to look at LEDs as a replacement for traditional halogen-based light sources more than a decade ago,” he recalls, “but it was clear that they weren’t bright enough or reliable enough and the whites had far too much of a blue cast in them. However, in the past few years LED technology has developed to the stage where we were able to make the transition from halogen to LEDs at the beginning of 2013. There are now also LED-based units which compare reasonably even with metal halide light sources.” The result is that fibre optic lighting installations now are more economical to operate, have lower maintenance requirements and are generally quieter in operation since they don’t require cooling fans. Largely as a consequence of not needing fans they are also usually more compact than the light sources which they’ve superseded. This means that finding a suitable place to put the light source – the first step in designing a fibre optic lighting installation – is generally easier than it might have been a few years ago, and this can produce cost benefits in terms of shorter fibre runs.

Fibre optic star points add a touch of magic to a garden path.

Starscape uses the combination of LED light sources and optical fibres in a wide range of decorative lighting applications from star ceilings and chandeliers to paving and decking lighting for outdoor areas.

“Star ceilings are our core business,” says Peter Fagan, “and we’re confident that nobody approaches this with quite as much genuine enthusiasm as we do. Whether it’s a £200 DIY kit for a nursery ceiling or a large commercial project, we’re keen to ensure that the finished result will be entrancing.” Starscape’s Infinity modular star ceiling system – originally developed for the high-end home cinema sector – allows customers to fit a star ceiling quickly and with a minimum of fuss and disruption, and the firm also can supply star panels to fit conventional 600 x 600mm ceiling grids. Because Infinity is modular – based on 1000 x 1000mm lightweight panels – it is completely scaleable and suitable for phased installations. The default colour of the Infinity panel is black, but other finishes are available for non-cinema applications. Fibre optic chandeliers can add life to a sterile space – in a lobby or stairwell – and since there’s no need to change bulbs in the new LED light sources there’s far less of a maintenance issue involved than might have been the case in the past. Thinking of using small LEDs in accent lighting? A single compact LED light source can illuminate up to 40 accent or crystal fittings, with DMX functionality available at modest cost. Based in north Northumberland, Starscape has shipped to customers on every continent bar Antarctica and South America.

Does Your Outdoor Area Give Your Customers the Benefit of Stylish Weather Protection for All Occasions? All occasions means protection from the wind, the rain and the sun but if it fails to impress, your customer experience is not going to be a good one. Your customer needs to feel comfortable and relaxed outdoors. A well-designed hospitality area will transform the look and image of your venue. Providing a stylish covered outdoor area will attract return custom and increase revenue, the return on investment can be dramatic. There are many solutions but a choice based ‘just on price’ is not going to give a valuable long term return for your business. Consider, before buying any hospitality gazebo. The first time your customer sees your outdoor area they get an impression of style and quality How many years use you get from your hospitality gazebo is dependent on the price you pay. Budget gazebos, jumbo umbrellas and parasols are not designed to cope with high winds, torrential rain or all year round use.

Replacing a ‘tatty’ canopy every few years is poor value and expensive in the long run. Quality is an overused and often inaccurate word. Look carefully at the materials used. Will they last? And if you can’t find out what it’s made of, consider why you haven’t been told. A premium hospitality gazebo canopy should not need replacing, at least not for 20 years or so. Consider a hospitality gazebo with side screens to give your customer additional weather protection. Gazebos and umbrellas described as ‘weatherproof & showerproof’ mean they are not waterproof and claims of 99% waterproof means it leaks! Many gazebos & umbrellas have solid roofs or dark canopies, which is fine if your customers want to be in the dark, even in the summer. Many years use from your hospitality gazebo is paramount so why buy one with only a one year guarantee? A short guarantee indicates that the manufacturer has little confidence in his own product. White Pavilion Gazebos You recognise the potential to generate additional income from an outdoor area, so any expenditure needs to be a long term ‘value for money’ investment. Only buy a hospitality gazebo after reading testimonials from customers. The salesman is not the expert, it’s the customer who is! Always look for - Quality, Value, Guarantee, Testimonials Solutions at White Pavilion Gazebos : 1000 sold and counting
